Abstract

In this work we show the existence of closure domains in Fe$_{1-x}$Ga$_x$ thin films featuring a striped magnetic pattern and study the effect of the magnetic domain arrangement on the magnetotransport properties. By means of X-ray resonant magnetic scattering, we experimentally demonstrate the presence of such closure domains and estimate their sizes and relative contribution to surface magnetization. Magnetotransport experiments show that the behavior of the magnetoresistance depends on the measurement geometry as well as on the temperature. When the electric current ows perpendicular to the stripe direction, the resistivity decreases when a magnetic field is applied along the stripe direction (negative magnetoresistance) in all the studied temperature range, and the calculations indicate that the main source is the anisotropic magnetoresistance. In the case of current flowing parallel to the stripe domains, the magnetoresistance changes sign, being positive at room temperature and negative at 100 K. 33. Controlling the dominant magnetic relaxation mechanisms for magnetic hyperthermia in bimagnetic core-shell nanoparticles

Abstract

We report a simple and effective way to control the heat generation of a magnetic colloid under alternate magnetic fields by changing the shell composition of bimagnetic core-shell Fe 3 O 4 /Zn x Co 1-x Fe 2 O 4 nanoparticles. The core-shell structure constitutes a magnetically-coupled biphase system, with an effective anisotropy that can be tuned by the substitution of Co 2+ by Zn 2+ ions in the shell. Magnetic hyperthermia experiments of nanoparticles dispersed in hexane and butter oil showed that the magnetic relaxation is dominated by Brown relaxation mechanism in samples with higher anisotropy (i.e., larger concentration of Co within the shell) yielding high specific power absorption values in low viscosity media as hexane. Increasing the Zn concentration of the shell, diminishes the magnetic anisotropy, which results in a change to a Néel relaxation that dominates the process when the nanoparticles are dispersed in a high-viscosity medium. We demonstrate that tuning the Zn contents at the shell of these exchange-coupled core/shell nanoparticles provides a way to control the magnetic anisotropy without loss of saturation magnetization. Abstract

We report the magnetic properties of antiferromagnetic Cr2O3 from bulk material down to 6 nm nanoparticles. We have found a decrease in the lattice parameters and the cell volume when the size diminishes. On the contrary, the magnetic anisotropy constant, Keff, shows a nonmonotonic behavior. The Keff decreases from its bulk value, shows a minimum near [lowercase_phi_synonym]∼30 nm and displays an important increase for smaller sizes. We analyzed the size dependence of Keff in terms of the magnetocrystalline and surface contributions, and we fitted the Keff size evolution on the basis of a phenomenological model taking into account the magnetically ordered core and the surface contribution. Abstract

We have systematically studied the magnetic properties of ferrite nanoparticles with 3, 7, and 11 nm of diameter with very narrow grain size distributions. Samples were prepared by the thermal decomposition of Fe(acac)3 in the presence of surfactants giving nanoparticles covered by oleic acid. High resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) images and XRD diffraction patterns confirms that all samples are composed by crystalline nanoparticles with the spinel structure expected for the iron ferrite. ac and dc magnetization measurements, as well in-field Mössbauer spectroscopy, indicate that the magnetic properties of nanoparticles with 11 and 7 nm are close to those expected for a monodomain, presenting large MS (close to the magnetite bulk). Despite the crystalline structure observed in HRTEM images, the nanoparticles with 3 nm are composed by a magnetically ordered region (core) and a surface region that presents a different magnetic order and it contains about 66% of Fe atoms. The high saturation and irreversibility fields in the M(H) loops of the particles with 3 nm together with the misalignment at 120 kOe in the in-field Mössbauer spectrum of surface component indicate a high surface anisotropy for the surface atoms, which is not observed for the core. For T<10 K, we observe an increase in the susceptibility and of the magnetization for former sample, indicating that surface moments tend to align with applied field increasing the magnetic core size. Abstract

We report unconventional magnetic properties on NiO nanoparticles of an average diameter ∼5.8(7) nm obtained by coprecipitation method. To investigate the effect of the intra and interparticles interactions in the magnetic properties nanoparticles were dispersed in a polyvinyl-pyrrodone matrix at two different concentrations. X-ray, ac, and dc magnetization and ferromagnetic resonance experiments were carried out on powder and dispersed NiO systems. Our results show that dispersed and concentrated samples exhibit following two different magnetic behaviors: (i) a high temperature peak related to the blocking of the particle core and (ii) a low temperature maximum likely related to the freezing of the frustrated spins on surface particle. Besides, we have observed that the low temperature maximum is not field-dependent and depend strongly on the distance among particles. This result can be understood taking account the decreasing of the dipolar interaction to more dispersed samples. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This work aims to demonstrate the need for in silico design via numerical simulation to produce optimal Fe 3 O 4 -based magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) for magnetic hyperthermia by minimizing the impact of intracellular environments on heating efficiency. By including the relevant magnetic parameters, such as magnetic anisotropy and dipolar interactions, into a numerical model, the heating efficiency of as prepared colloids was preserved in the intracellular environment, providing the largest in vitro specific power absorption (SPA) values yet reported. Dipolar interactions due to intracellular agglomeration, which are included in the simulated SPA, were found to be the main cause of changes in the magnetic relaxation dynamics of MNPs under in vitro conditions. These results pave the way for the magnetism-based design of MNPs that can retain their heating efficiency in vivo, thereby improving the outcome of clinical hyperthermia experiments.

Abstract

For almost 10 years imatinib has been the therapeutic standard of chronic myeloid leukemia. The introduction of other tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) raised a debate on treatment optimization. The debate is still heated: some studies have protocol restrictions or limited follow-up; in other studies, some relevant data are missing. The aim of this report is to provide a comprehensive, long-term, intention-to-treat, analysis of 559 newly diagnosed, chronic-phase, patients treated frontline with imatinib. With a minimum follow-up of 66 months, 65% of patients were still on imatinib, 19% were on alternative treatment, 12% died and 4% were lost to follow-up. The prognostic value of BCR-ABL1 ratio at 3 months (⩽10% in 81% of patients) was confirmed. The prognostic value of complete cytogenetic response and major molecular response at 1 year was confirmed. The 6-year overall survival was 89%, but as 50% of deaths occurred in remission, the 6-year cumulative incidence of leukemia-related death was 5%. The long-term outcome of first-line imatinib was excellent, also because of second-line treatment with other TKIs, but all responses and outcomes were inferior in high-risk patients, suggesting that to optimize treatment results, a specific risk-adapted treatment is needed for such patients.

Abstract

Background: The incidence of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) increases with age, but it is unclear how the characteristics of the disease vary with age. In children, where CML is very rare, it presents with more aggressive features, including huge splenomegaly, higher cell count and higher blast cell percentage. Patients and methods: To investigate if after childhood the disease maintains or loses these characteristics of aggressiveness, we analyzed 2784 adult patients, at least 18 years old, registered by GIMEMA CMLWP over a 40-year period. Results: Young adults (YAs: 18-29 years old) significantly differed from adults (30-59 years old) and elderly patients (at least 60 years old) particularly for the frequency of splenomegaly (71%, 63% and 55%, P < 0.001), and the greater spleen size (median value: 4.5, 3.0 and 1.0 cm, P < 0.001). According to the EUTOS score, that is age-independent, high-risk patients were more frequent among YAs, than among adult and elderly patients (18%, 9% and 6%, P < 0.001). In tyrosine kinase inhibitors-treated patients, the rates of complete cytogenetic and major molecular response were lower in YAs, and the probability of transformation was higher (16%, 5% and 7%, P = 0.011). Conclusions: The characteristics of CML or the host response to leukemia differ with age. The knowledge of these differences and of their causes may help to refine the treatment and to improve the outcome.
