Solar radiation is a key driver of energy and carbon fluxes in natural ecosystems. Radiation measurements are essential for interpreting ecosystem scale greenhouse gases and energy fluxes as well as many other observations performed at ecosystem stations of the Integrated Carbon Observation System (ICOS). We describe and explain the relevance of the radiation variables that are monitored continuously at ICOS ecosystem stations and define recommendations to perform these measurements with consistent and comparable accuracy. The measurement methodology and instruments are described including detailed technical specifications. Guidelines for instrumental set up as well as for operation, maintenance and data collection are defined considering both ICOS scientific objectives and practical operational constraints. For measurements of short-wave (solar) and long wave (infrared) radiation components, requirements for the ICOS network are based on available well-defined state-of-The art standards (World Meteorological Organization, International Organization for Standardization). For photosynthetically active radiation measurements, some basic instrumental requirements are based on the performance of commercially available sensors. Since site specific conditions and practical constraints at individual ICOS ecosystem stations may hamper the applicability of standard requirements, we recommend that ICOS develops mid-Term coordinated actions to assess the effective level of uncertainties in radiation measurements at the network scale.

Compound nerve action potentials (CNAPs) were used as a metric to assess the stimulation performance of a novel high-density, transverse, intrafascicular electrode in rat models. We show characteristic CNAPs recorded from distally implanted cuff electrodes. Evaluation of the CNAPs as a function of stimulus current and calculation of recruitment plots were used to obtain a qualitative approximation of the neural interface's placement and orientation inside the nerve. This method avoids elaborate surgeries required for the implantation of EMG electrodes and thus minimizes surgical complications and may accelerate the healing process of the implanted subject.

To find out in which detail the kinematics of observed movements is represented in the viewer's brain, we searched for brain areas displaying coherent magnetoencephalographic (MEG) activity with observed repetitive hand movements. Whole-scalp MEG signals were recorded from 10 right-handed young adults who observed repetitive 3-Hz right-hand flexion-extension movements performed by the experimenter. The coherence between the subject's MEG signals and the experimenter's index-finger acceleration was computed to index the level of actor-observer coupling. The underlying cortical activity was identified with Dynamic Imaging of Coherent Sources. In all subjects, coherence spectra showed statistically significant peaks at movement frequency (F0) and its first harmonic (F1), strongest at visual areas. At F0, additional significant local coherence maxima, clearly distinct from the coherent visual areas, occurred in the primary motor (M1) cortices of both hemispheres and in the cerebellum (posterior vermis and hemispheres). Our results highlight the time-sensitive involvement of the M1 cortices and cerebellum in the kinematic representation of observed repetitive, non-goal directed motor actions., (Copyright © 2012 Elsevier Inc. We studied online coupling between a reader's voice and a listener's cortical activity using a novel, ecologically valid continuous listening paradigm. Whole-scalp magnetoencephalographic (MEG) signals were recorded from 10 right-handed, native French-speaking listeners in four conditions: a female (Exp1f) and a male (Exp1m) reading the same text in French; a male reading a text in Finnish (Exp 2), a language incomprehensible for the subjects, and a male humming Exp1 text (Exp 3). The fundamental frequency (f0) of the reader's voice was recorded with an accelerometer attached to the throat, and coherence was computed between f0 time-course and listener's MEG. Similar levels of right-hemisphere-predominant coherence were found at ˜0.5 Hz in Exps 1-3. Dynamic imaging of coherent sources revealed that the most coherent brain regions were located in the right posterior superior temporal sulcus (pSTS) and posterior superior temporal gyrus (pSTG) in Exps 1-2 and in the right supratemporal auditory cortex in Exp 3. Comparison between speech rhythm and phrasing suggested a connection of the observed coherence to pauses at the sentence level both in the spoken and hummed text. These results demonstrate significant coupling at ∼0.5 Hz between reader's voice and listener's cortical signals during listening to natural continuous voice. The observed coupling suggests that voice envelope fluctuations, due to prosodic rhythmicity at the phrasal and sentence levels, are reflected in the listener's cortex as rhythmicity of about 2-s cycles. The predominance of the coherence in the right pSTS and pSTG suggests hemispherical asymmetry in processing of speech sounds at subsentence time scales., (Copyright © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.)

Recent advances in microelectronics and biosensors are enabling developments of innovative biochips for advanced healthcare by providing fully integrated platforms for continuous monitoring of a large set of human disease biomarkers. Continuous monitoring of several human metabolites can be addressed by using fully integrated and minimally invasive devices located in the sub-cutis, typically in the peritoneal region. This extends the techniques of continuous monitoring of glucose currently being pursued with diabetic patients. However, several issues have to be considered in order to succeed in developing fully integrated and minimally invasive implantable devices. These innovative devices require a high-degree of integration, minimal invasive surgery, long-term biocompatibility, security and privacy in data transmission, high reliability, high reproducibility, high specificity, low detection limit and high sensitivity. Recent advances in the field have already proposed possible solutions for several of these issues. The aim of the present paper is to present a broad spectrum of recent results and to propose future directions of development in order to obtain fully implantable systems for the continuous monitoring of the human metabolism in advanced healthcare applications.

In this paper we present our investigations related to the optimization of hydrogels for the coating/packaging of biomedical devices. In order for hydrogels to be a viable interface/packaging material, a number of conditions must be met. We outline the tailoring of the mechanical properties of a HEMA based hydrogel by exploiting the influence of individual hydrogel components to achieve these requirements. The water sorption, the elasticity and the porosity of various hydrogel materials were tested and the effects of the different hydrogel components was determined. These components include gelatin (used as a pore generator or porogen), alginate (to influence mechanical properties) and collagen (to improve cell adhesion). We also report the results of in vitro fibroblast testing on various hydrogel types.

The design and fabrication of a novel 2-scale topography dry electrode using macro and micro needles is presented. The macro needles enable biopotential measurements on hairy skin, the function of the micro needles is to decrease the electrode impedance even further by penetrating the outer skin layer. Also, a fast and reliable impedance characterization protocol is described. Based on this impedance measurement protocol, a comparison study is made between our dry electrode, 3 other commercial dry electrodes and a standard wet gel electrode. Promising results are already obtained with our electrodes which do not have skin piercing micro needles. For the proposed electrodes, three different conductive coatings (Ag/AgCl/Au) are compared. AgCl is found to be slightly better than Ag as coating material, while our Au coated electrodes have the highest impedance.

A cost-effective, miniaturized and biocompatible packaging method for medical devices is proposed, resulting in a small, soft and comfortable implantable package. Towards this end, the barrier materials and fabrication process for the individual die encapsulation are largely explored. We demonstrate that various common clean room materials are good candidates for preventing metal leaching into body. In accelerated tests at higher temperature, several conductive barrier materials are damaged by the test bio-fluid, suggesting insufficient resistance to body fluids in long term. Covering electrodes by noble metals will solve this problem. For metallization, noble metals as Pt are best candidates. CoO calculations showed that selective plating of Pt is more cost-effective than sputtering. To reduce the cost of a sputter process, Pt recycling is very important.

A comfortable, wearable wireless ECG monitoring system is proposed. The device is realized using the combination of two proprietary advanced technologies for electronic packaging and interconnection : the UTCP (Ultra-Thin Chip Package) technology and the SMI (Stretchable Mould Interconnect) technology for elastic and stretchable circuits. Introduction of these technologies results in small fully functional devices, exhibiting a significant increase in user comfort compared to devices fabricated with more conventional packaging and interconnection technologies.

In this study, the effects of different light intensities either in direct sunlight or in the shade crown of adult beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) trees on delta13C and Delta18O were determined under ambient (1 x O3) and twice-ambient (2 x O3) atmospheric ozone concentrations during two consecutive years (2003 and 2004). We analysed the isotopic composition in leaf bulk, leaf cellulose, phloem and xylem material and related the results to (a) meteorological data (air temperature, T and relative humidity, RH), (b) leaf gas exchange measurements (stomatal conductance, g(s); transpiration rate, E; and maximum photosynthetic activity, A(max)) and (c) the outcome of a steady-state evaporative enrichment model. Delta13C was significantly lower in the shade than in the sun crown in all plant materials, whilst Delta18O was increased significantly in the shade than in the sun crown in bulk material and cellulose. Elevated ozone had no effect on delta13C, although Delta18O was influenced by ozone to varied degrees during single months. We observed significant seasonal changes for both parameters, especially in 2004, and also significant differences between the study years. Relating the findings to meteorological data and gas exchange parameters, we conclude that the differences in Delta18O between the sun and the shade crown were predominantly caused by the Péclet effect. This assumption was supported by the modelled Delta18O values for leaf cellulose. It was demonstrated that independent of RH, light-dependent reduction of stomatal conductance (and thus transpiration) and of A(max) can drive the pattern of Delta18O increase with the concomitant decrease of delta13C in the shade crown. The effect of doubling ozone levels on time-integrated stomatal conductance and transpiration as indicated by the combined analysis of Delta18O and delta13C was much lower than the influence caused by the light exposure.
