Purpose: To assess the knowledge of students from public high schools in poor communities about HPV and Sexually Transmitted Infections and their attitude towards and prevention of such diseases., Patients and Methods: Cross-sectional study with adolescents from public schools of São Paulo - Brazil. Participants were selected for an interview by a randomization program. A questionnaire about knowledge, attitudes, and preventive practices regarding STIs, including HPV, according to sex was administered and answers were analyzed by the Poisson regression model with robust variance., Results: Median age of the 269 participants was 16 years. The majority was of African descent (68.8%, n = 185), most (74%, n = 199) were religious and the vast majority (90.7%, n = 244) lived with their parents. The Poisson regression revealed statistically significant sex-related differences regarding the following questions: "Do you know how it is prevented?" (PR = 1.12 [1.03‒1.23], p = 0.007); "Have you ever been concerned with HPV?" (PR = 1.10 [1.02‒1.19], p = 0.011); "Have you ever sought health care due to concerns about HPV?" (PR = 1.09 [1.04‒1.14], p < 0.001); "Do you know what a Pap Smear is?" (PR = 1.24 [1.13‒1.36], p < 0.001); "Do you know what the cervix is?" (PR = 1.23 [1.13‒1.34], p < 0.001); "Do you know what cervical cancer is?" (PR = 1.13 [1.04‒1.22], p = 0.004)., Conclusions: The present results show that adolescents from public schools in poor communities in São Paulo City know little about HPV and cervical cancer. Background: Precocious puberty (PP) is defined as premature pubertal development. Its consequences surpass the physical evidence of sexual maturity with the premature epiphyseal closure of the long bones and the reduction of adult stature by varied degrees. Central PP is characteristically dependent on GnRH and most of its causes are not completely known. Altered estrogen action is also believed to be involved in the genesis of PP. In fact, estrogen receptor alpha (Rea) gene polymorphisms may be associated with early age at menarche. The objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between Reα gene polymorphisms (PvuII and XbaI) and the occurrence of central PP., Methods: A total of 73 girls with central PP and 101 girls with normal pubertal maturation were evaluated. Both groups were genotyped for the PvuII (T/C) and XbaI (A/G) polymorphisms in the Reα gene., Results: The frequency distribution of the XbaI (p = 0.28) and of the PvuII (p = 0.12) genotypes, as well as the XbaI and PvuII allelic variants (p = 0.23 and p = 0.86, respectively), did not differ between the groups., Conclusion: The PvuII and XbaI Rea gene polymorphisms do not appear to be related to development of central PP.

Our aim was to evaluate whether endothelial overexpressing of the bradykinin B1 receptor could be associated with altered left ventricular and myocardial performance. Echocardiography and hemodynamic were employed to assess left ventricular morphology and function in Sprague Dawley transgenic rats overexpressing the endothelial bradykinin B1 receptor (Tie2B1 rats). The myocardial inotropism was evaluated on papillary muscles contracting in vitro. In Tie2B1 animals, an enlarged left ventricular cavity and lower fractional shortening coupled with a lower rate of pressure change values indicated depressed left ventricular performance. Papillary muscle mechanics revealed that both Tie2B1 and wild-type rat groups had the same contractile capacities under basal conditions; however, in transgenic animals, there was accentuated inotropism due to post-pause potentiation. Following treatment with the Arg(9)-BK agonist, Tie2B1 papillary muscles displayed a reduction in myocardial inotropism. Endothelial B1 receptor overexpression has expanded the LV cavity and worsened its function. There was an exacerbated response of papillary muscle in vitro to a prolonged resting pause, and the use of a B1 receptor agonist impairs myocardial inotropism.
