Military women on active duty are exposed to constant physical and mental demands, which may predispose them to some infection risks, including vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC), a pathology considered a global public health problem. To monitor the prevalent and emerging pathogens in VVC, this study aimed to evaluate the distribution of yeast species and their in vitro antifungal susceptibility profile. We studied 104 vaginal yeast specimens obtained during routine clinical examinations. The population was attended at the Medical Center of the Military Police, São Paulo, Brazil, and was divided into two groups: infected patients (VVC) and colonised patients. Species were identified by phenotypic and proteomic methods (MALDI-TOF MS) and susceptibility to eight antifungal drugs, including azoles, polyenes, and echinocandins, was determined using microdilution broth. Candida albicans stricto sensu was found to be the most frequently isolated species (55%), but we observed a considerable rate of other Candida species isolates (30%), including Candida orthopsilosis stricto sensu only in the infected group. There were also other rare genera such as Rhodotorula, Yarrowia, and Trichosporon (15%), of which Rhodotorula mucilaginosa was the most prevalent in both groups. Fluconazole and voriconazole had the highest activity against all species in both groups. Candida parapsilosis was the most susceptible species, except for amphotericin-B in the infected group. Of note, we observed unusual resistance in C. albicans. Our results have allowed us to compile an epidemiological database on the etiology of VVC to support the empirical treatment and improve the health care of military women., (© The Author(s) 2023. Ethnopharmacological Relevance: The family Lecythidaceae has about 25 genera and 400 identified species, which are distributed especially in the pantropical region, mostly found in the tropics of Central and South America, Southeast Asia and Africa. The third most abundant family in Amazonian forests and the genus Eschweilera, with the large number of species in Lecythidaceae., Aim of the Review: The present review compiles information since the 1934s about of ethnopharmacology, and chemical constituents of species of Lecythidaceae, as well as a summary of the bioactivities shown by the extracts, fractions, and secondary metabolites., Materials and Methods: All relevant information on ethnopharmacology, and chemical constituents of species of Lecythidaceae were gathered from electronic databases including Web of Science, Science Direct, Elsevier, ResearchGate, and Google Scholar. Information was also obtained from local books, PhD. and MSc. Dissertations., Results: The phytochemical diversity of the family was demonstrated with 180 different metabolites that have been reported from 25 species, most of them being triterpenes or flavonoids. The pharmacological studies carried out with the extracts, fractions and compounds showed promising antibacterial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, antinociceptive, cytotoxic and antioxidant activities., Conclusion: The present review provides an insight into ethnopharmacology, phytochemistry and pharmacology of species of Lecythidaceae. Based on the pharmacological studies it has been found that different plant species of Lecythidaceae possess a wide range of bioactivities such as anti-arthritic, anti-inflammatory, antileishmanial, antibacterial and antifungal. These activities are due to the presence of bioactive compounds including triterpenoids and their glycosides derivatives, flavonoids, steroids, sesquiterpenoids, alkaloids, and other compounds. Background & Aims: The symptoms of xerostomia and taste alteration are adverse effects which frequently occur in patients under chemotherapy and once associated they can potentially impair their nutritional status. The aim of this study was to investigate the association of xerostomia and taste alterations in patients being treated by neoplastic chemotherapy., Methods: Fifty patients scheduled to receive neoplastic chemotherapy were followed for their first two chemotherapy cycles for solid tumors and the Chemotherapy-Induced Taste Alteration Scale (CiTAS) was adopted. Xerostomia was defined by the presence of dry mouth complaints reported by the patients and signs of hyposalivation identified during the intraoral examination., Results: Of the 50 patients, 33 were women, mean age; 61,48 ± 9,07 years, and 17 were men, mean age; 57,35 ± 11,50 years. The most common tumor was located in the breast affecting 15 patients (30%). The Mann-Whitney test showed that the mean scores of CiTAS were significantly higher for those patients who reported having xerostomia when compared with those without xerostomia after the first two chemotherapy cycles. The cofounding variables such as age, smoking habits and use of antidepressants were not statistically associated with taste alterations (p > 0.05)., Conclusions: Taste alterations were worse for patients who complained of xerostomia during the first two cycles of antineoplastic chemotherapy and the association of both symptoms can potentially impair their nutritional status and quality of life., Competing Interests: Declaration of competing interest The authors declare that they have no conflict of interest., (Copyright © 2021 European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism. Objectives: The aim of this study was to verify the likely influence of presurgical administration of low doses of alendronate sodium in craniofacial bone repair and correlate the histological frame found on reparative tissue to the immunohistochemical presence of IGF1, IGF2, and osteopontin (OP)., Materials and Methods: In total, 120 rats were randomly allocated into four groups: group C (control), group OA (autogenous bone), group B (bisphosphonates), and group OA-B (autogenous bone + bisphosphonates). Groups B and OA-B received alendronate sodium (ALN) 0.01 mg/kg subcutaneously on alternate days for 4 weeks. Groups C and OA received saline solution. Critical 5-mm defects were created in rat calvaria, which were filled with blood clot in groups C and B and with autogenous bone in groups OA and OA-B. The animals were euthanized at 15 or 30 days postoperatively. Histological analysis and immunohistochemistry of IGF1, IGF2, and OP proteins was performed. Immunohistochemistry evaluated the expression in cells and extracellular matrix., Results: Groups C and B revealed healing predominantly characterized by connective tissue. In groups OA and OA-B, healing of connective tissue and neoformation of compact bone was observed. Expression of IGF1 an OP was present in all specimens. IGF1 expression in cells was more pronounced in groups OA and OA-B 15 days postoperatively. The expression of IGF2 was only observed in groups OA and OA-B, with greater intensity in group OA-B 30 days postoperatively. OP expression was only observed in cells and not in the extracellular matrix and was more pronounced in group OA 15 days postoperatively., Conclusions: The application of systemic ALN at a dose of 0.01 mg/kg did not improve cranial bone matrix deposition. Nevertheless, the expression of IGF1 and OP and a slight marking of IGF2 were observed especially in groups OA and OA-B in the wound healing process. Future studies should assess higher doses of ALN to verify its influence on bone repair., Clinical Relevance: The systemic use of ALN 0.01 mg/kg on alternate days 4 weeks prior to surgery did not interfere with bone repair.

Background: As in women, regional lymph node status impacts survival in dogs with malignant mammary tumors. However, few studies have evaluated regional lymph node metastases in dogs with malignant mammary gland tumors., Objectives: To estimate overall survival based on the assessments of the lymph node status and the morphologic and morphometric features in female dogs with malignant mammary gland tumors., Materials and Methods: In total, 178 lymph nodes from 97 female dogs were assessed and reviewed, and after confirmation by immunohistochemistry (IHC), 161 lymph nodes were selected for analysis of metastases. Animals were considered metastasis-free (negative lymph nodes) only after IHC analysis for cytokeratin AE1/AE3. The number of positive lymph nodes, the number of metastatic foci, the maximum diameter and the area of metastasis were analyzed, and estimates of overall survival were made., Results: Dogs with metastasis had lower mean survival than those with metastasis-free regional lymph nodes, showing a direct relationship between the number of affected lymph nodes and shorter survival. However, histologic analysis of the lymph nodes identified lower survival rates in animals with macrometastases and isolated tumor cells, areas of metastasis >20.11 mm², and metastatic diameters >7.32 mm., Conclusion: The identification of ≥1 lymph nodes positive for metastasis and morphometric characterization of lymphatic metastases indicate the prognostic relevance of lymph nodes status in dogs with mammary tumors., (Copyright © 2015 by the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine.)

We evaluated a new phenotypic test for carbapenemase detection. A total of 100 Enterobacteriaceae isolates were selected. The test was compared with conventional PCR for bla(KPC) and bla(NDM) detection. Context: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), hepatic manifestation of metabolic syndrome, has been considered the most common liver disease nowadays, which is also the most frequent cause of elevated transaminases and cryptogenic cirrhosis. The greatest input of fatty acids into the liver and consequent increased beta-oxidation contribute to the formation of free radicals, release of inflammatory cytokines and varying degrees of hepatocytic aggression, whose histological expression may vary from steatosis (HS) to non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). The differentiation of these forms is required by the potential risk of progression to cirrhosis and development of hepatocellular carcinoma., Objective: To review the literature about the major risk factors for NAFLD in the context of metabolic syndrome, focusing on underlying mechanisms and prevention., Method: PubMed, MEDLINE and SciELO data basis analysis was performed to identify studies describing the link between risk factors for metabolic syndrome and NAFLD. A combination of descriptors was used, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, non-alcoholic steatohepatitis, metabolic syndrome and risk factors. At the end, 96 clinical and experimental studies, cohorts, meta-analysis and systematic reviews of great impact and scientific relevance to the topic, were selected., Results: The final analysis of all these data, pointed out the central obesity, type 2 diabetes, dyslipidemia and hypertension as the best risk factors related to NAFLD. However, other factors were highlighted, such as gender differences, ethnicity, genetic factors and the role of innate immunity system. How these additional factors may be involved in the installation, progression and disease prognosis is discussed., Conclusion: Risk factors for NAFLD in the context of metabolic syndrome expands the prospects to 1) recognize patients with metabolic syndrome at high risk for NAFLD, 2) elucidate pathways common to other co-morbidities, 3) determine risk factors associated with a worse prognosis, 4) develop therapeutic strategies with goal of reducing risk factors, 5) apply acquired knowledge in public health policies focusing on preventive strategies.

Mycobacterium haemophilum is a slow-growing nontuberculous mycobacterium that can cause disease in both immunocompetent and immunocompromised patients. The most common clinical presentations of infection are the appearance of suppurative and ulcerated skin nodules. For the diagnosis, samples collected from suspected cases must be processed under the appropriate conditions, because M. haemophilum requires lower incubation temperatures and iron supplementation in order to grow in culture. In this case report, we describe the occurrence of skin lesions in a kidney transplant recipient, caused by M. haemophilum, associated with acupuncture treatment. The diagnosis was established by direct smear and culture of material aspirated from cutaneous lesions. Species identification was achieved by characterization of the growth requirements and by partial sequencing of the hsp65 gene. The patient was successfully treated with clarithromycin and ciprofloxacin for 12 months. Considering that the number of patients receiving acupuncture treatment is widely increasing, the implications of this potential complication should be recognized, particularly in immunosuppressed patients., (© 2010 John Wiley & Sons A/S.)

The current study describes the clinical, gross, histopathologic, and immunohistochemical findings of a T-cell lymphoma in a captive porcupine (Coendou prehensilis), a species typically seen in the tropical forests of Brazil. At necropsy, extensive neoplastic involvement was observed in the cervical lymph nodes, with extension into the salivary gland. The spleen was mildly enlarged, and neoplastic nodules were grossly evident in the liver and right kidney. Histologically, sheets of large and markedly pleomorphic round cells were observed in the cervical lymph nodes, lung, liver, spleen, and kidney. The neoplastic cells were positive for cluster of differentiation (CD)3 and negative for CD79a by immunohistochemistry.

Background: Liver disorders are the major manifestations of schistosomiasis mansoni. Factors that account for increased concentrations of cholestasis-indicating enzymes in the hepatosplenic form of the disease are unknown., Objective: To assess the correlation between increased gamma-glutamyltransferase serum levels and both the parasitic load and ultrasound alterations in patients with schistosomiasis., Patients and Methods: Twenty-five patients with the chronic form of schistosomiasis were assessed for the presence or absence of increased enzymatic levels, for the parasitic load (low x medium/high) and for ultrasound parameters. Furthermore, analysis of prothrombin time and a platelet count were performed., Results: Of the 25 patients, 13 showed increased gamma-glutamyltransferase plasma levels. No significant correlation was found between increased gamma-glutamyltransferase levels and the parasitic load, or between increased enzyme levels and ultrasound alterations. Nor did the prothrombin index or the platelet count differ between the two groups (normal gamma-glutamyltransferase levels and increased gamma-glutamyltransferase levels)., Conclusion: The parasitic load explains no rise in gamma-glutamyltransferase plasma levels in patients with the chronic form of schistosomiasis, and conventional ultrasound is not a sensitive method to detect the alteration suggested by the increased enzyme level in those patients.

This study compare the profile of nursing students from public and private schools located in the State of Minas Gerais, Brazil. It shows the similarities and differences between the two groups. The results show that the most significant differences are related to school life, requisites for learning and the economic situation of the students. The private schools student is in disadvantage, he enters at university later, disposes less time to study, the majority works, his parents have less regular instruction. This results can be used by other professionals to continue this kind of research with a broader scope.
