Simple Summary: The genus Rineloricaria of Neotropical armored catfish has several species with chromosomal polymorphism, which is where individuals of the same population have different numbers of chromosomes and chromosome structures. This characteristic affects how these fish reproduce and adapt, but we do not fully understand its role in the evolution of this fish group. This study looks at Rineloricaria lanceolata, a species known for its chromosome polymorphism. It aims to understand how these different karyotypes arise and how individuals with different karyotypes can still produce offspring even when there is an imbalance in gamete generation. We used one individual as a model to find out how the karyotype was created. It turned out that two chromosomes from different pairs fused together to form a third larger chromosome. This resulted in an odd number of chromosomes, which led to different combinations of gametes being formed in meiosis because of how the chromosomes paired. Chromosomal polymorphism is a significant aspect of population genetics, influencing the adaptation and evolution of species. In Rineloricaria lanceolata, a Neotropical fish species, chromosomal polymorphism has been observed, yet the underlying mechanisms and evolutionary implications remain poorly understood. This article aims to investigate the chromosomal polymorphism in Rineloricaria lanceolata, focusing on elucidating the meiotic behavior of karyotypic variants and tracing the phylogenetic origins of this polymorphism within the genus. By employing molecular markers and cytogenetic techniques, we aim to uncover the mechanisms driving chromosomal rearrangements and their potential role in speciation and adaptation. Access the genetic variability of endangered and isolated populations has become an important conservation tool. Astyanax scabripinnis is a well-known fish model for genetic studies, forming very isolated populations in headwaters. Besides that, this species frequently presents supernumerary chromosomes, which elevates the interest on genetic studies. Genetic diversity of an Astyanax scabripinnis population from the Atlantic Forest (Serra da Mantiqueira region, Brazil) was assessed with microsatellite markers for the first time. Since microsatellite markers are not described for this species, we tested markers described for a related species for transferability to A. scabripinnis. Six polymorphic loci were sufficiently reliable for population genetic analysis. We found that this population passed through a recent bottleneck because of the presence of an excess of heterozygotes, low allelic diversity, heterozygosity excess, and small effective population size. Individuals with and without B chromosomes were previously identified in this population and our study found private alleles in the individuals without B chromosomes. Furthermore, when individuals without B chromosomes were removed from the analysis, the population did not present heterozygosity excess, suggesting that the bottleneck event was driven by individuals with B chromosomes. Our results provide an insight into the value of microsatellite markers as molecular tools and is the first genetic study using molecular data of A. scabripinnis from this area. The structure and organization of repetitive elements in fish genomes are still relatively poorly understood, although most of these elements are believed to be located in heterochromatic regions. Repetitive elements are considered essential in evolutionary processes as hotspots for mutations and chromosomal rearrangements, among other functions -- thus providing new genomic alternatives and regulatory sites for gene expression. Te present study sought to characterize repetitive DNA sequences in the genomes of Semaprochilodus insignis (Jardine & Schomburgk, 1841) and Semaprochilodus taeniurus (Valenciennes, 1817) and identify regions of conserved syntenic blocks in this genome fraction of three species of Prochilodontidae (S. insignis, S. taeniurus, and Prochilodus lineatus (Valenciennes, 1836) by cross-FISH using Cot-1 DNA (renaturation kinetics) probes. We found that the repetitive fractions of the genomes of S. insignis and S. taeniurus have significant amounts of conserved syntenic blocks in hybridization sites, but with low degrees of similarity between them and the genome of P. lineatus, especially in relation to B chromosomes. Te cloning and sequencing of the repetitive genomic elements of S. insignis and S. taeniurus using Cot-1 DNA identified 48 fragments that displayed high similarity with repetitive sequences deposited in public DNA databases and classified as microsatellites, transposons, and retrotransposons. Te repetitive fractions of the S. insignis and S. taeniurus genomes exhibited high degrees of conserved syntenic blocks in terms of both the structures and locations of hybridization sites, but a low degree of similarity with the syntenic blocks of the P. lineatus genome. Future comparative analyses of other prochilodontidae species will be needed to advance our understanding of the organization and evolution of the genomes in this group of fish. Background: Among Neotropical fishes, the family Characidae is highly diverse and speciose and its taxonomy is not completely resolved. In Chile, the family is represented by five species, all within the genus Cheirodon, of which C. pisciculus, C. galusdae, C. kiliani, and C. australe are endemic, while C. interruptus is introduced. We compared chromosomal markers in order to appreciate the taxonomy and evolution of these trans-Andean fishes. Results: The specimens were photographed in stereomicroscope to observe the ventral protrusive teeth and cusps for morphological analysis and species identification. All of the species analysed had equally diploid chromosome number 2n = 50, with karyotypes dominated by high number of acrocentric chromosomes as compared to those of other members of Cheirodontinae. The distribution of heterochromatin was inconspicuous and was similar in all the species. The number of active NORs (nucleolus organizer regions) was polymorphic, with the greater number of them in C. kiliani and C. galusdae. The location of 5S and 18S rDNA ranged in number and position, showing two sites in different chromosomes. The fluorescent in situ hybridization with telomeric probe did not reveal interstitial sites in all analysed species. Conclusions: The comparative analysis of karyotypes and morphological markers revealed a biogeographic pattern of distribution, with the species that occur in the southern region forming one group and those in central and northern Chile forming another. The objectives of this study were to map genomic regions associated with QTL for aluminum (Al) tolerance in maize and determine the phenotypic effects of tolerance loci. QTL analysis for Al tolerance was carried out in a population of F2:3 progenies resulting from a cross between the contrasting lines LT 99-4 and LS 04-2. SSR (Simple Sequence Repeat) loci and AFLP (Amplified Fragment Length Polymorphism) were used to construct the linkage map and to detect QTL mapped by composite interval mapping analysis. Nine tolerance QTL among eight linkage groups (chromosomes 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10) were mapped, which explained 70.3% of the phenotypic variance. The results confirmed three major QTL (bins 6.00, 8.05, and 10.01) that are described in the literature for Al tolerance, which accounted for most of the phenotypic variance (40.3%). Background: B chromosomes, also known as supernumerary or accessory chromosomes, are additional chromosomes over the standard complement found in various groups of plants and animals. We investigated the presence of, and characterized, supernumerary microchromosomes in Astyanax goyacensis using classical and molecular cytogenetic methods., Findings: Three specimens possessed 2n = 50 chromosomes (8m + 26sm + 8st + 8a), and two specimens contained 1 to 9 additional B microchromosomes varying intra- and inter-individually. Chromosome painting with a B chromosome-specific probe yielded signals for several B microchromosomes, with one exhibiting no markings. Acrocentric chromosomes of the standard complement were also painted. Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) using ribosomal probes located two chromosome pairs carrying 18S rDNA marked on the short arm, and one pair carrying 5S rDNA with pericentromeric markings. One chromosome was observed in synteny with 18S cistrons., Conclusion: These data contribute to knowledge of the karyotype evolution, the origin of B chromosomes, and to an understanding of the functionality of rDNA.
