Abstract

Background:The design of new nuclear reactors and transmutation devices requires to reduce the present neutron cross section uncertainties of minor actinides. Purpose: Reduce the $^{243}$Am(n,$\gamma$) cross section uncertainty. Method: The $^{243}$Am(n,$\gamma$) cross section has been measured at the n_TOF facility at CERN with a BaF$_{2}$ Total Absorption Calorimeter, in the energy range between 0.7 eV and 2.5 keV. Results: The $^{243}$Am(n,$\gamma$) cross section has been successfully measured in the mentioned energy range. The resolved resonance region has been extended from 250 eV up to 400 eV. In the unresolved resonance region our results are compatible with one of the two incompatible capture data sets available below 2.5 keV. The data available in EXFOR and in the literature has been used to perform a simple analysis above 2.5 keV. Conclusions: The results of this measurement contribute to reduce the $^{243}$Am(n,$\gamma$) cross section uncertainty and suggest that this cross section is underestimated up to 25% in the neutron energy range between 50 eV and a few keV in the present evaluated data libraries.

Abstract

Aims: The aims of this project were to establish the outcomes for dental implant research that are important to people with lived experience (PWLE) and to achieve consensus with those developed by dental professionals (DPs) for a core outcome set (COS). This paper reports the process, outcomes and experiences of involving PWLE in developing a COS for dental implant research: the Implant Dentistry Core Outcome Sets and Measures project. Materials and Methods: Overall methods were guided by the Core Outcome Set Measures in Effectiveness Trials (COMET) initiative. Initial outcome identification was achieved from focus groups with PWLE employing calibrated methods across two low‐middle‐income countries (China and Malaysia) and two high‐income countries (Spain and the United Kingdom). Following consolidation of the results, the outcomes were incorporated into a three‐stage Delphi process with PWLE participation. Finally, consensus between PWLE and DPs was achieved using a mixed live and recorded platform. The experiences of PWLE involvement in the process was also evaluated. Results: Thirty‐one PWLE participated in four focus groups. Thirty‐four outcomes were suggested across the focus groups. Evaluation of the focus groups revealed a high level of satisfaction with the engagement process and some new learning. Seventeen PWLE contributed to the first 2 Delphi rounds and 7 to the third round. The final consensus included 17 PWLE (47%) and 19 DPs (53%). Out of the total of 11 final consensus outcomes considered essential by both PWLE and health professionals, 7 (64%) outcomes mapped across to ones that PWLE initially identified, broadening their definition. One outcome (PWLE effort required for treatment and maintenance) was entirely novel. Conclusions: We conclude that engaging PWLE in COS development can be achieved across widely different communities. Abstract

The neutron capture cross section of Bi-209 has been measured at the CERN n_TOF facility by employing the pulse-height-weighting technique. Improvements over previous measurements are mainly because of an optimized detection system, which led to a practically negligible neutron sensitivity. Additional experimental sources of systematic error, such as the electronic threshold in the detectors, summing of gamma-rays, internal electron conversion, and the isomeric state in bismuth, have been taken into account. gamma-Ray absorption effects inside the sample have been corrected by employing a nonpolynomial weighting function. Because Bi-209 is the last stable isotope in the reaction path of the stellar s-process, the Maxwellian averaged capture cross section is important for the recycling of the reaction flow by alpha decays. In the relevant stellar range of thermal energies between kT=5 and 8 keV our new capture rate is about 16% higher than the presently accepted value used for nucleosynthesis calculations. At this low temperature an important part of the heavy Pb-Bi isotopes are supposed to be synthesized by the s-process in the He shells of low mass, thermally pulsing asymptotic giant branch stars. With the improved set of cross sections we obtain an s-process fraction of 19 +/- 3% of the solar bismuth abundance, resulting in an r-process residual of 81 +/- 3%. Abstract

The aim of this study was to test whether zirconia abutments exhibit the same clinical and esthetic outcomes as titanium abutments in single-tooth implant restorations in the esthetic area. The 24 treated patients were randomly assigned to a test (zirconia abutment) or control (titanium abutment) group. Objective evaluations were carried out using the Implant Crown Aesthetic Index (ICAI) and the Papilla Index (PI) at the 1-month and 12-month follow-up examinations after crown cementation. No significant differences, either in ICAI or in other periodontal or radiographic measurements, were observed. At 1 year, zirconia and titanium abutments exhibited the same esthetic outcomes. Abstract

Accurate and reliable neutron capture cross section data for actinides are necessary for the proper design, safety regulation and precise performance assessment of transmutation devices such as Fast Critical Reactors or Accelerator Driven Systems. In particular, the neutron capture cross sections of 237Np, 240Pu and 243Am play a key role in the design and optimization of strategies for the Transmutation of Nuclear Waste. Abstract

We measured the neutron capture cross section of 139La relative to 197Au in the energy range of 0.6 eV to 9 keV at n_TOF, the neutron time-of-flight facility at CERN. After a description of the experimental apparatus, we discuss data analysis procedures. The data were fitted using R-matrix formalism to extract resonance parameters which, in turn, were used to calculate average level spacings D0 = 268 ± 22 eV and D1 < 250 eV, and neutron strength functions S0 = (0.79 ± 0.03)×10-4 and S1 = (0.73 ± 0.05)×10-4 for s- and p-wave resonances. The data also were used to determine Maxwellian-averaged neutron capture cross sections which, in turn, were used to calculate the 139La abundance synthesized in a stellar model of the main component of the s process. © 2006 American Institute of Physics [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

A series of measurements of 237Np fission cross section have been performed at the CERN spallation neutron facility n_TOF which covers a wide energy range from 1 eV up to 250 MeV. A fast ionization chamber (FIC) was used as a fission fragment detector with registration efficiency of not less than 97 %. Particular attention was paid to correct the fission cross section with use of 235U standard. Total experimental uncertainties are determined to be at the level of 3%. Analysis of the experimental data in the restricted neutron energy from 5 eV up to 1 MeV showed a systematic deviation from evaluated data (ENDF/B-VI). This discrepancy amounts to up to a factor 3 for resolved resonances in the neutron energy range of 5 eV – 2 KeV, and is in good agreement with some previous experiments. A similar disagreement at the level of 6–7% was found for higher energies around the threshold (En = 300 keV–1 MeV). This energy range is essential for the transmutation of neptunium in ADS or fast reactors. Abstract

The radioactive decay of 187Re → 187Os (t1/2 = 43 Gyr) is suited for dating the onset of heavy-element nucleosynthesis. The radiogenic contribution to the 187Os abundance is the difference between the natural abundance and the corresponding s-process component. This component can be obtained via the well-established σN systematics using the neighboring s-only isotope 186Os, provided the neutron-capture cross sections of both isotopes are known with sufficient accuracy. We report on a new set of experiments performed with a C6D6 detector array at the n_TOF neutron spallation facility of CERN. The capture cross sections of 186Os, 187Os, and 188Os have been measured in the neutron-energy range between 1 eV and 1 MeV, and Maxwellian-averaged cross sections were deduced for the relevant thermal energies from kT=5 keV to 100 keV. © 2005 American Institute of Physics [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

All the stable lead isotopes and 209Bi have been recently measured at n_TOF (CERN) in the range from 1 eV up to 1 MeV, using an optimized experimental setup, A set of two homemade C6D6 detectors with carbon-fibre canning was designed to greatly reduce the sensitivity to scattered neutrons. Surrounding elements like the sample holder and the sample exchanger have been made also of carbon fibre. The pulse-height weighting technique has been used in order to determine the (n,γ) cross sections. Concerning this technique, special care has been taken in the treatment of several sources of error leading to a total systematic uncertainty of less than 3%. Abstract

The use of a fuel cycle based on 232Th can substantially reduce the radiotoxicity of the produced nuclear waste since the lower atomic and mass number of thorium results in a strongly suppressed build-up of the higher actinides and especially americium and curium. The design and realization of nuclear power stations based on the use of thorium, either in a critical or subcritical system, require an accurate knowledge of the 232Th(n,γ) reaction cross section. We have measured the neutron capture cross section of 232Th at the recently constructed neutron time-of-flight facility n_TOF at CERN in the energy range from 1 eV to 1 MeV. In the resolved resonance region, the resonance parameters have been extracted. The use of Bonner spheres to characterise radiation fields is abundantly documented in the literature. This study, carried out using the state-of-the-art Monte Carlo code MCNPX and the deconvolution program MAXED, aims to characterise the RPI epithermal neutron beam using of a set of Bonner spheres of different radii surrounding a ³He detector. The energy range of interest in this study covers from thermal to 10 MeV. This purely computational study aims to assess the feasibility of using the method previously mentioned to improve the knowledge of the energy and intensity characteristics of the epithermal beam. The article reports on the 2008 reaction of Venezuelan doctors to a 2001 agreement between Venezuela and Cuba which was developed in an effort to improve the delivery of medical care in the poorest regions of Venezuela. Under the agreement Cuban doctors were allowed to work in Venezuela. Physicians attending the 2008 medicosocial conference of the Venezuelan Medical Council indicated that they felt that the introduction of 20,000 Cuban doctors to Venezuela has led to strong resentment of the doctors among members of the Venezuelan medical profession.
