2. Understanding Undergraduate Sports Coaching Students' Development and Learning: The Necessity of Uncertainty

Abstract

Despite recent attention, research is yet to adequately focus on sports coaches' intellectual development as a consequence of their formal learning experiences. Drawing on the work of Perry, the aim of this article was to explore how the intellectual development of undergraduate sports coaching students was affected by the social pedagogical setting exposed to. Twenty-seven students from two different universities were selected through network and convenience sampling, and "tracked" over their three year course(s) of study. Data were gathered through focus groups, video diaries and reflective written logs. Findings revealed that over the course of their study students generally progressed from a dualist to a more relativist view of the world. Such a movement, however, was far from unproblematic and uniform. Rather, it was subject to the vagaries of assessment, course structure, the epistemic range of modules experienced, and in particular the relationships established with staff members.

Abstract

Potassium (K) is an essential macro-element for plant growth and development given its implication in major processes such as photosynthesis, osmoregulation, protein synthesis, and enzyme function. Using 30-day-old Cakile maritima plants as halophyte model grown under K deprivation for 15 days, it was analyzed at the biochemical level to determine the metabolism of reactive oxygen species (ROS), key photorespiratory enzymes, and the main NADPH-generating systems. K starvation-induced oxidative stress was noticed by high malondialdehyde (MDA) content associated with an increase of superoxide radical (O) in leaves from K-deficient plants. K shortage led to an overall increase in the activity of hydroxypyruvate reductase (HPR) and glycolate oxidase (GOX), as well as of antioxidant enzymes catalase (CAT), those of the ascorbate-glutathione cycle, peroxidase (POX), and superoxide dismutase (SOD), and the main enzymes involved in the NADPH generation in both leaves and roots. Especially remarkable was the induction of up to seven CuZn-SOD isozymes in leaves due to K deficiency. As a whole, data show that the K starvation has associated oxidative stress that boosts a biochemical response leading to a general increase of the antioxidant and NADPH-generating systems that allow the survival of the halophyte Cakile maritima.

Abstract

OBJECTIVE: To measure the global impact of COVID-19 pandemic on volumes of IV thrombolysis (IVT), IVT transfers, and stroke hospitalizations over 4 months at the height of the pandemic (March 1 to June 30, 2020) compared with 2 control 4-month periods. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional, observational, retrospective study across 6 continents, 70 countries, and 457 stroke centers. Diagnoses were identified by their ICD-10 codes or classifications in stroke databases. RESULTS: There were 91,373 stroke admissions in the 4 months immediately before compared to 80,894 admissions during the pandemic months, representing an 11.5% (95% confidence interval [CI] -11.7 to -11.3, p < 0.0001) decline. There were 13,334 IVT therapies in the 4 months preceding compared to 11,570 procedures during the pandemic, representing a 13.2% (95% CI -13.8 to -12.7, p < 0.0001) drop. Interfacility IVT transfers decreased from 1,337 to 1,178, or an 11.9% decrease (95% CI -13.7 to -10.3, p = 0.001). Recovery of stroke hospitalization volume (9.5%, 95% CI 9.2-9.8, p < 0.0001) was noted over the 2 later (May, June) vs the 2 earlier (March, April) pandemic months. There was a 1.48% stroke rate across 119,967 COVID-19 hospitalizations. Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection was noted in 3.3% (1,722/52,026) of all stroke admissions. CONCLUSIONS: The COVID-19 pandemic was associated with a global decline in the volume of stroke hospitalizations, IVT, and interfacility IVT transfers. Primary stroke centers and centers with higher COVID-19 inpatient volumes experienced steeper declines. Recovery of stroke hospitalization was noted in the later pandemic months. © 2021 American Academy of Neurology.

Abstract

Altitude and climate and its microclimatic characteristics influence the grapes and wines quality. The objective of this study was to evaluate ‘Niagara Rosada’ and ‘Isabel’ grapes quality at three different altitudes in the highlands of the state of Espírito Santo. The experiment was a randomized complete block design in subdivided plots (3x2). The plots were in different altitudes and, in the subplots, the two cultivars. Also, five replicates were done in each treatment. The grapes quality were evaluated in the laboratory from total soluble solids (TSS), total titratable acidity (TTA), pH and the relationship between TSS / TTA. The cultivar ‘Niágara Rosada’ showed higher values than the ‘Isabel’ cultivar in relation to the evaluated parameters. The altitude of 650 m favored to obtain higher values of total titratable acidity and lower values of pH. The excess of leaf nitrogen in environment 1 contributed to the higher values of TTA and lower pH for the cultivars ‘Niágara Rosada’ and ‘Isabel’. The quality of the ‘Niágara Rosada’ and ‘Isabel’ grapes produced in the state of Espírito Santo were influenced by altitude, and the altitude of 650 m favored to obtain higher values of total titratable acidity and lower values of pH.

22. The promise and problems of video diaries: building on current research

Abstract

The purpose of this paper was to further explore the use of video diaries as a research method. Specifically, the principal objective was to detail and deconstruct the use of video diaries in relation to some of the claims made on their behalf, particularly those related to participant voice, empowerment and spontaneity. The paper is presented through the illustration of a longitudinal case study into undergraduate sports coaching students’ learning and identity, in which video diaries were used alongside participant reflective logs and focus group interviews. Building on previous work, the findings give credence to an increasingly problematic conceptualisation of data derived from video diaries. Here, the claimed spontaneous and empowering nature of such diaries is questioned in light of the substantial role adopted by researchers to secure their production. The findings, however, also point to the realistic use of such methods which require careful consideration of context, and to being the principal, as opposed to a complementary, research means within any given study.

23. Maintenance therapy with low-dose azacitidine after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation for recurrent acute myelogenous leukemia or myelodysplastic syndrome: a dose and schedule finding study.

Abstract

Background: Recurrence is a major cause of treatment failure after allogeneic transplantation for acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) and myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), and treatment options are very limited. Azacitidine is a DNA methyltransferase inhibitor with activity in myeloid disease. The authors hypothesized that low-dose azacitidine administered after transplant would reduce recurrence rates, and conducted a study to determine a safe dose/schedule combination.Methods: Forty-five high-risk patients were treated. Median age was 60 years; median number of comorbidities was 3; 67% were not in remission. By using a Bayesian adaptive method to determine the best dose/schedule combination based on time to toxicity, the authors investigated combinations of 5 daily azacitidine doses, 8, 16, 24, 32, and 40 mg/m2, and 4 schedules: 1, 2, 3, or 4 cycles, each with 5 days of drug and 25 days of rest. Cycle 1 started on Day +40.Results: Reversible thrombocytopenia was the dose-limiting toxicity. The optimal combination was 32 mg/m2 given for 4 cycles. Median follow-up was 20.5 months. One-year event-free and overall survival were 58% and 77%, justifying further studies to estimate long-term clinical benefit. No dose significantly affected DNA global methylation.Conclusions: Azacitidine at 32 mg/m2 given for 5 days is safe and can be administered after allogeneic transplant for at least 4 cycles to heavily pretreated AML/MDS patients. The trial also suggested that this treatment may prolong event-free and overall survival, and that more cycles may be associated with greater benefit. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
