Dantes Weltengedicht, das die Jenseitsreise des menschlichen Protagonisten Dante durch die drei Reiche Inferno, Purgatorium und Paradies schildert, verfügt offenbar über eine gewaltige visionäre Faszination und Ausstrahlung, die dazu tendiert, bildkünstlerische Arbeiten sowie Aneignungen in vielfältigen visuellen Medien zu stimulieren. Nicht zufällig partizipieren zahlreiche berühmte europäische Maler, Zeichner und Bildhauer an der unabschließbaren Aufgabe, die Stationen jener Jenseitsreise der Danteschen Projektionsfigur zu illustrieren oder im Medium der bildenden Kunst zu interpretieren. Vor diesem Hintergrund verwundert es außerdem kaum, dass auch die Zeichner und Autoren von Comics, Mangas und Graphic Novels im ausgehenden 20. und 21. Jahrhundert Dantes Werke und besonders die "Commedia" als geeignetes Sujet für sich entdeckt und sie in teils komplexen Text-Bild-Gestaltungen adaptiert haben. Der japanische Mangakünstler Gô Nagai schreibt sich mit "Dante Shinkyoku" (1994–1995) in den Kontext einer globalen und transmedialen Danterezeption ein und bedient sich dabei vielfältiger Referenzen auf die europäische Geschichte der Dante-Illustration.

(2016) stellt eine besondere Herausforderung der Bilderbuchübersetzung dar, da der Schrifttext ausschließlich in einer fiktiven Sprache verfasst ist. Eine Übersetzung erscheint damit zwar auf den ersten Blick überflüssig. Eine nähere Untersuchung des Ausgangstextes legt jedoch vielfaltige intermodale, inter- und intralinguale Bezuge frei, die einerseits ein Feld der Polyvalenz entfalten und die Übersetzung erschweren, andererseits eine Übersetzung unumgänglich machen. »Iz an Freuenschuh! An mirobelli Freuenschuh!«The Fictional Language in Carson Ellis’s Du Iz Tak? as a Field of Polyvalence and a Touchstone of Picturebook Translation Carson Ellis’s award-winning picture book Du Iz Tak? is a special case of picturebook translation since the original text is written in an invented language. The comparative examination of the original and selected translations (German and Dutch) exposes the latent limits of picturebook translation. The written text in Du Iz Tak? consists exclusively of the direct speech of anthropomorphic insects. Reception of the work involves searching for clues in order to acquire the bug language. It is remarkable that, despite the invented nature of the bug language, different language editions of the work have been produced. Comments by the author and the publisher point out that the translation of the work was considered inevitable at an early stage, but it also represented a great challenge. The following two questions will be pursued in this article: Which intermodal interrelations within the original text determine the necessity of language-specific translations of Du Iz Tak? To what extent do the translations differ in their approach to this challenge? The semiosis of the bug language in Du Iz Tak? that demands translation is examined and the polyvalence of the text is discussed. A comparison of the original text with the two translations shows the translational shifts that are brought about by the notion of the single address in children’s literature. This article reveals the limits of transferability of this specific book as well as the general challenges of picturebook translation.

Mirzoeff 1998; ders. 1999; Mitchell 2008). Inzwischen präzisiert Bucher: »Der grundlegende Wandel der Kommunikationsverhältnisse besteht nicht darin, dass zunehmend Abbildungen die Textkommunikation ergänzen oder einschränken [...]. Der grundlegende Wandel besteht darin, dass neue und neuartige Mischformen der verschiedensten Kommunikationsmodi und Kanäle entstanden sind, die man als multimodale Kommunikationsformen bezeichnen kann.« (Bucher 2011, S. 123) Gudrun Marci-Boehncke macht als wesentliche Ursache dieser Hybridisierungen die durch das Internet, den »Ort [...] der Medien schlechthin«, in immer umfassenderer Weise gegebene Medienkonvergenz aus (Marci-Boehncke 2013, S. 507). Entertaining and/or Incomprehensible?Fictionalisation and Factualisation Strategies in Comic Books about Ancient Rome Recently, multimodal texts, i.e. texts using more than one mode to communicate with their readers, have become increasingly prominent in children’s literature. While the illustration of written texts has been a common long-time practice, the new multimodal books for children use images as an additional, original level of narrative. The general assumption in children’s literature studies is that it is easier for children to read a combination of text and images, as the images help them to understand the text. The analysis of three comic books on Roman history will show that, on the contrary, the process of understanding is actually more complex in the new multimodal texts for children: The pictorial narrative demands a more sophisticated kind of reading expertise. In addition, the task of decoding becomes more challenging when the narratives follow different intentions, which is often the case in contemporary comic books in which the pictorial narrative can be an ironic take on the written narrative.

Dabei beteiligt sich die grafische Adaption von Ari Folmans und David Polonskys Das Tagebuch der Anne Frank. Graphic Diary (2017) auf zweierlei Art am Fortschreiben des kulturellen Gedächtnisses; einerseits in seiner Geformtheit durch die Publikation selbst und darüber hinaus in seiner Organisiertheit aufgrund der institutionalisierten Kommunikation (vgl. Assmann 1988, S. 12). Figures of MemoryAnne Frank’s Diary between Text and Image, Word and Symbol Anne Frank’s Diary: The Graphic Interpretation by Ari Folman and David Polonsky (2017) is a recent addition to a sequence of editions that have shaped the perception of Anne Frank’s story. At the same time, the ethics and aesthetics of remembrance have been consistently discussed. These discussions have been fueled by discourses on memory as well as by the reimagination of the past by new generations. As Marianne Hirsch states »Postmemory’s connection to the past is [...] actually mediated not by recall but by imaginative investment, projection, and creation« (Hirsch 2012). Ari Folman and David Polonsky work with those imaginative approaches and reshape historical events on the visual and the verbal narrative levels. As with Waltz with Bashir (2009), on which Folman and Polonsky collaborated successfully as author and illustrator, Anne Frank’s Diary is also an extraordinary testimony of war based on extensive research. Intermedial references, such as historical photographs, documentaries and journal entries add authenticity to Anne Frank’s Diary: The Graphic Interpretation and lead the reader on a journey back in time. This article discusses the relationship between the visual representation of memory in the Diary and how it goes about narrating the story, and it examines this graphic novel’s potential for shaping and reshaping the reader’s perception of history.

The Greenlandic oral story-telling tradition, Oqaluttuaq, meaning “history,” “legend,” and “narrative,” is recognized as an important entry point into Arctic collective memory. The graphic artist Nuka K. Godtfredsen and his literary and scientific collaborators have used the term as the title of graphic narratives published from 2009 to 2018, and focused on four moments or ‘snippets’ from Greenland’s history (from the periods of Saqqaq, late Dorset, Norse settlement, and European colonization). Adopting a fragmentary and episodic approach to historical narrativization, the texts frame the modern European presence in Greenland as one of multiple migrations to and settlements in the Artic, rather than its central axis. We argue that, in consequence, the Oqaluttuaq narratives not only “provincialize” the tradition of hyperborean colonial memories, but also provide a postcolonial mnemonic construction of Greenland as a place of multiple histories, plural peoples, and heterogenous temporalities. As such, the books also narrativize loss and disappearance—of people, cultures, and environments—as a distinctive melancholic strand in Greenlandic history. Informed by approaches in the field of cultural memory and in the study memorial objects, Marks’ haptic visuality and Keenan and Weizman’s forensic aesthetics, we analyze the graphic narratives of Oqaluttuaq in regard to their aesthetic dimensions, as well as investigate the role of material objects and artifacts, which work as narrative “props” for multiple stories of encounter and survival in the Arctic. This paper explores the relation between the popular “Tintin” comics by the Belgian artist Hergé and Steven Spielberg’s successful film adaptation “The Adventures of Tintin” (2011) from a linguistic perspective. It explores how language use in the scriptovisual medium of the comic (which combines still images and printed text) is rendered in the audiovisual medium of film (which combines moving images and spoken language). After discussing general linguistic similarities between comics and films and the use of language in each of the two media, the paper compares the representation of voice, accent, thoughts, talking animals, sounds and written language in Spielberg’s screen adaptation to the original printed comic books. It analyses to what extent the language from comic books can be directly transferred to the filmic medium and investigates possible causes underlying any modifications in the above-mentioned domains.

BLACK KIRBY is a collaborative "entity" that is the creative doppelganger of artists / designers John Jennings and Stacey "Blackstar" Robinson. The manifestation of this avatar is an exhibition and catalog1 of primarily visual artworks-on-paper that celebrate the groundbreaking work of legendary comics creator Jack Kirby regarding his contributions to the pop culture landscape and his development of some of the conventions of the comics medium. BLACK KIRBY also functions as a highly syncretic mythopoetic framework by appropriating Jack Kirby’s bold forms and revolutionary ideas combined with themes centered around AfroFuturism social justice, Black history, media criticism, science fiction, magical realism, and the utilization of Hip Hop culture as a methodology for creating visual expression. This collection of work also focuses on the digital medium and how its inherent affordances offer much more flexibility in the expression of visual communication and what that means in its production and consumption in the public sphere. In a sense, BLACK KIRBY appropriates the gallery as a conceptual "crossroads" to examine identity as a socialized concept and to show the commonalities between Black comics creators and Jewish comics creators and how they both utilize the medium of comics as space of resistance. The duo attempts to re-mediate "Blackness" and other identity contexts as "sublime technologies" that produce experiences that sometime limit human progress and possibility. This paper / presentation will examine some of the themes of this inaugural exhibition of this new artistic team and share the processes involved with the ideation, execution, and installation of the exhibition.

This essay on the nature of the boundary of the comics form is an analysis of US Congressman John Lewis’s autobiography March, which recounts his early days as a civil rights leader and is in the form of a comic or "graphic novel". A few key examples are examined in which normally distinct images and textual elements blend together thereby bringing into question the nature of the boundary in a more general sense as it functions in the comics. Some of the formal elements of the graphic novel analyzed by the essay include its symbolic composition, arrangement of panels and images, treatment of light and dark areas, deployment of racialized icons, and blurring of temporalities and history. Dieser Aufsatz über die Natur der Grenze im Medienformat "Comic" analysiert die Autobiographie des US-Kongressabgeordneten John Lewis, March, die seine frühen Tage als Bürgerrechtler in Form eines Comics (Graphic Novel) erzählt. Anhand einiger prominenter Beispiele, in denen normalerweise räumlich getrennte Bild- und Textelemente des Comics verschmelzen, wird auf allgemeinerer Ebene das Wesen der Grenze im Comic erörtert. Es werden verschiedene formale Elemente der Graphic Novel untersucht, z. B. ihre symbolische Komposition, das Arrangement von Panels und Bildern, die Behandlung von hellen und dunklen Bereichen sowie der Einsatz von ethnischen Symbolen und das Verschwimmen von Zeitlichkeiten und Geschichte.

Band der Reihe 'yellow. schriften zur comicforschung' machen sich die Verfasser Jens Balzer und Lambert Wiesing auf die Suche nach der Urszene des Comics, nach jener "historischen Stätte, wo sich der (begrifflich noch zu bestimmende) Comic zum ersten Mal in aller wünschenswerten Klarheit zeigt." In vier Kapiteln, die auf Vorträge und Aufsätze zurückgehen und in der für das Buch überarbeiteten Fassung dennoch aufeinander aufbauen, entwickeln sie ihre These, dass der amerikanische Zeichner Richard Felton Outcault mit dem "Yellow Kid" eine neue Bildlichkeit entwickelte, die als Comic-Bild das Erzählen mit Bildern modernisierte und dem Medium bzw. der Gattung Comic ihre besondere Form gegeben hat.

Combining education and enterntainment via comcis can create a sustainable supplementary tool for science communication. (Essay written as comic)

A comic can tell the story of almost anything: a single atom, the entire solar system, the past, future events, dreams and thoughts. All this, and more, can be depicted. When presenting facts, a certain artistic licence can be deployed if, for instance, the author wants to emphasise important details; likewise, aspects he or she deems irrelevant can be left out. Moreover, questions and issues can be laid out that are difficult or even impossible to portray photographically or cinematically. However, when the cartoon strip sets out its version of information, events, objects and people, it can also result in a distortion of reality. The graphic may not always make clear exactly how something looks or the precise way in which something happened. And even where documentary images exist, the comic strip representation of the non-fictional is always coloured by artistic interpretation.

In October 2015, the Cluster of Excellence 'Image Knowledge Gestaltung. An Interdisciplinary Laboratory' at Humboldt Universität zu Berlin staged a symposium entitled Science meets Comics. Academics from various disciplines converged along with artists from all over the world in order to discuss the future of global nutrition – and the medium of the comic strip as a communication tool for the complex issues in this field. The open two-day symposium was followed by a closed, three-day workshop wherein the artists and cluster members took up the issues raised at the symposium and worked on possible directions for the future.

There is no doubt that factual discourse exists in comics – the kind of communication that intends to be understood as a reference to a shared and actual reality. Factual comics are not, however, common. While the formal structure of comics clearly allows for factuality, the historical specificity of its aesthetics seems to introduce a non-binding but plausible 'drift' of the art form, ultimately pulling away from reality and towards fiction. This does not prevent factual comics, but it allows for subversive remnants in their aesthetic make-up. One of these is a 'parasitic imagination', which might be understood in the context of Michel Serres' concepts of the parasite. It opens up cartoonish depictions for tertiary significations beyond the drawing and its ultimate real reference. Rather than avoid this basic vehicle of comic book discourse, the 'challenge to factual comics' must be how to employ them in the service of the intended communication.

Sophisticated science reported on in comics. The once unthinkable is here as comics are being leveraged and enthusiastically welcomed into forums that would have been off limits not long ago. It's an exciting time of change. But in this headlong dash forward, I want to offer a pause for consideration, and suggest that we ask, what are the things that comics do uniquely compared to other forms of representation? And from there, let us explore how we can best take advantage of comics' particular affordances to do with comics things only comics can do.

In Japan, most contemporary readers expect comics, or manga, to be entertaining fiction ('story manga'), magazine-based, and targeted at age- and gender-specific demographics. These narratives eventually reappear in bound book editions ('tankōbon'), after they have proven to be popular to an extent that would warrant print runs of more than 5,000 copies. Due to the central role of magazines as first site of publication since the 1960s, genre specificity has been essential – for editors, readers, and artists alike. While manga's traditional genres have been gender- and age-specific, thematic genres such as SF, horror and comedy, or recently also blog-like essay manga, come to the fore whenever the otherwise prevalent categories forfeit efficacy. But there is one genre which does not comply with these categories, i.e. gakushū manga, educational or instructional comics.

The present volume documents the twofold character of the conference 'Science meets Comics' with the first part focusing on comics as a format for communicating complex topics and the second part addressing food in the age of the Anthropocene as one such example for complex topics. The overall objective of the symposium was to deal with the results and suggestions of the presentations and discussions, to find possible pathways on how to feed the world in the future and to co-produce the final chapter of the scientific comic 'Eating Anthropocene' together with all artists participating in the project. In order to sum up the framing, contents and design process of the comic as well as to highlight its Anthropocene context we below provide a slightly abridged version of the preface of our comic book.

Der Comic ist für die Jugendlichen eine Kunstform, in der eine experimentelle Identitätssuche in ganz konkreten Interaktionen inszeniert werden kann. Lebensweltliche Zusammenhänge werden dabei in ihren fiktionalen narrativen Entwürfen und in der "Logik der Bilder" gestaltet und variiert. Dabei zeugen die Arbeiten der Jugendlichen von einer Auseinandersetzung mit medialen oder fiktiven Vorbildern. Selbstpositionierungen werden in den Zeichnungen erprobt und in den Rollenentwürfen der Charaktere des Comics ausgehandelt. Die Szene der Comiczeichner_innen wird dabei zur sekundären Sozialisationsinstanz für die Jugendlichen. Hier spielt – vor allem auf der Ebene der 'Fan-Art' – die Aushandlung von Sexualität und Geschlecht innerhalb der 'Peergroup' eine entscheidende Rolle. Der 'Shojo'-Manga, die Eigenart der Manga-Kultur und Manga- und Anime-Fanszene ermöglichen Identitätsaushandlungen, in denen Homosexualität positiv konnotiert ist. Die Jugendlichen können sich in ihren Bildgeschichten mit lesbischer und schwuler Lebensführung und verschiedenen Geschlechtsidentitäten auseinandersetzen und in ihren Zeichnungen und Geschichtendiese Handlungsoptionen und Orientierungen erproben. For adolescents the comic is an art form in which an experimental search for identity can take place in specific and definite interactions. They can be designed and varied in fictional narrative concepts as well as in the "logic of images". At the same time the adolescents’ work is interwoven with medial and fictitious models. Self-conceptions are negotiated in the drawings and in the roles of the comic stories’ characters. The youth culture of the adolescent comic artists enables a secondary socialization for young people. Especially at the level of fan art, the negotiation of sexuality and gender plays a decisive role within the peer group. The 'shojo' manga, the general manga culture and manga and anime fandom allow to negotiate homosexual identities in a positive way. In their comic strips, the young people can deal with lesbian and gay lifestyles and different gender identities and try these options and orientations in their drawings and stories.

"Im Comic gibt es keine Grenzen [...]"- dieses Postulat galt es anlässlich der durch diesen Band repräsentierten Tagung zu überprüfen. Im Call for Papers unter der Überschrift "Grenzen ziehen, Grenzen überschreiten" wurden solche medialen Eigenschaften, aber auch viele weitere Themenkomplexe angesprochen, die verschiedene Aspekte der Auseinandersetzung mit Grenzen oder von Formen der Grenzüberschreitung - sowohl inhaltlich als auch formal - aufnahmen.

"Mit dem Gesicht nach Westen und dem Rücken zu den anderen", das umschreibt die für die jüngere Generation im östlichen Europa so typische West-Ausrichtung, die aber dem direkten Nachbarn auf der anderen Seite der Grenze kaum Interesse zollt. Diese Äußerung wurde zum Leitmotiv und Movens des Forschungs- und Ausstellungsprojekts comiXconnection strip – bandă desenată – strip – képregény – ϲрипп, das die extrem unterschiedlich entwickelten Comic-Szenen aufspürt und zueinander in Beziehung setzt. Ein Projekt, das sich im Laufe der Vorbereitung und Umsetzung mit immer neuen Grenzen konfrontiert sah.

Existiert eine Comic-Wissenschaft? Wer die Beiträge durchsieht, die in der hier vorliegenden Dokumentation der Tagung 'Grenzen ziehen, Grenzen überschreiten' formuliert wurden, kann feststellen, dass sie alle den wissenschaftlichen Charakter wahren, der an den Universitäten in unseren Tagen gelehrt wird. Es gibt AutorInnennamen, Titel, längere Untertitel, abstracts und Fußnoten. Es ist alles in bester Ordnung: wenn die Grenzen der Comics befragt werden, müssen ja nicht gleich die Grenzen der Wissenschaftlichkeit in den Blick geraten. Doch wird sich bei der genaueren Lektüre der Eindruck nicht abwehren lassen, dass es etwas Disparates oder sogar Desparates gibt, dass zwischen den verschiedenen wissenschaftlichen Ansätzen, Methoden und Schreibweisen Grenzen existieren, die nicht ausdrücklich benannt, reflektiert oder eben wissenschaftlich bearbeitet werden, dass die Fiktion einer Comicwissenschaft nicht darüber hinwegtäuschen kann, dass die vielen Forschungen und Studien sich immer wieder in die verschiedenen Fächer verteilen, wie sie in ihren unterschiedlichen Zugängen, Methoden, Gegenständen,Interessen, Wissensformen, Aussagen tradiert sind.

Most dream sequences in comics are embedded in narrated reality as if the characters were experiencing them directly. Together with the character, the reader transcends the border between narrated reality and narrated dream. There are conventional stylistic devices to mark this boundary. But the border between narrated dream and narrated reality can also be transcended, figures or elements can break out of dreams or break into dreams of others. The dream can be transgressive. Dreams can be defined by a space in which the limitations of physics and logic do not apply. The artistic engagement with experienced and fictitious dreams enriches the comic and expands its possibilities. Dream events and elements can even be used outside dream sequences. Comics can treat narrated reality like a narrated dream. Traumsequenzen werden im Comic meistens so in die erzählte Realität eingebettet, als würde die Figur sie in genau diesem Moment erleben. Gemeinsam mit der Figur überschreitet der Leser die Grenze zwischen erzählter Realität und erzähltem Traum. Es gibt konventionell etablierte Marker, um diese Grenze sichtbar zu machen. Im Comic kann die Grenze zwischen erzählter Realität und erzähltem Traum durchbrochen werden; Figuren und andere Elemente können aus dem Traum ausbrechen oder in fremde Träume gelangen. Der Traum kann auch Mittel zur Grenzüberschreitung sein. Die Grenzen des Traums können einen Raum umschließen, in dem die Grenzen der Physik und Logik nicht mehr gelten. Die künstlerische Auseinandersetzung mit erlebten und fiktiven Träumen bereichert den Comic; an den Traum erinnernde Elemente und Ereignisse finden sich im Comic dann auch außerhalb von Traumsequenzen. Der Comic kann die erzählte Realität wie den erzählten Traum behandeln.

Die Interaktion von Bildern und Schrift definiert zwar den Comic nicht; dieser Interaktion in Comics nachzugehen, bietet jedoch wesentlichen Aufschluss darüber, was die spezifische historische und moderne Ästhetik dieser unter den vielen denkbaren Kunstformen ausmacht, die mit Bildern in Sequenz Sinn oder Narration generieren. Der Beitrag geht dieser Spur an drei Beispielen aus 'Astérix', aus Demian5s 'When I am King' und aus Matt Fractions 'Hawkeye' nach; er stützt sich dabei auf Jacques Rancières Beschreibungen des ästhetischen Regimes. Interactions of images and script do not define comics; and yet following the traces of such interactions can show us some essential aspects of the specific historical and modern aesthetics of this form among those arts that make sense or narrations from images in sequence. This attempt does so for three examples, from 'Astérix', from Demian5's 'When I am King', and from Matt Fraction's 'Hawkeye', and on the basis of Jacques Rancière's descriptions of the aesthetic regime.

Der Beitrag untersucht mithilfe literaturwissenschaftlicher Konzepte die verschiedenen erzählerischen Funktionen der politischen Grenze in Comic- Erzählungen zum Israel-Palästina-Konflikt. Hier dienen unter anderem Guy Delisles 'Aufzeichnungen aus Jerusalem' und Joe Saccos 'Palästina' als illustrierende Beispiele. Unter Zurhilfenahme von sozio-kulturellen Überlegungen werden die Funktionen der Grenze als Trenner, Aktant und Kommunikateur untersucht. Vorliegende Untersuchung liefert Ansätze, Grenz-Erzählungen zu analysieren und darüber hinaus die Grenze als wirkungsmächtiges Subjekt der Erzählung zu untersuchen. The following article seeks to identify the various functions of political borders in comic book narrations concerning the Israel-Palestine-Conflict with the assistance of concepts of literary studies. Comic books like Joe Saccos 'Palestine' or Guy Delisles 'Jerusalem' are therefore serving as illustrating examples. Functions of the border in comic-narrations as seperator, actant, and communicator are examined with the help of sociological and cultural ideas. This article introduces basic approaches to analyze border-narrations and moreover highlights the possibility to identify the border as aninfluential subject within the narration.

Zwar integrieren Comics bildliche und textuale Elemente. Oft herrscht in einzelnen Bildern oder Szenen aber ein Primat des Texts oder des Bildes vor. Dies bedeutet eine faktische Text-Bild-Trennung im Comic-Panel. 'The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen' macht diese Text-Bild-Grenzen durch gezielte Überschreitungen fruchtbar: Die implizite Hierarchie von Text und Bild wird durch gegenseitige, explizite Verweise aufeinander in Frage gestellt. Dies lässt auch den Informationswert der einzelnen Panels zweifelhaft erscheinen: Geht hier mehr vor sich, als auf den ersten Blick ersichtlich ist? 'League' provoziert so ein aufmerksames, 'detektivisches Lesen', das sensibel ist gegen die Verweisstrukturen des Comics. Dieser zeigt über sich selbst – auf einen Kanon literarischer Vorlagen – hinaus. Although comics integrate textual and pictorial elements, there can be found a primacy of text over picture, and vice versa, in specific panels or scenes. This means a factual text-picture-divide in comic panels. 'The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen' questions hierarchies such as these through reciprocal references between text and pictures. Inevitably, this raises doubts about the information value of the individual panels: Is there more going on here than is evident at first glance? Thus 'League' encourages an attentive, investigative attitude towards itself. Through the references inside the book, the comic also raises awareness for the references pointing out of itself, to a canon of literary sources informing Leagues fictional setup.

Monsters are no rarity in the history of U. S.-American comics, but in Ken Dahl's eponymous small press comic they assume a articular function: His morphing monsters tell a story about how being a carrier of the herpes virus leads to incessant worry and social isolation. Dahl's narrative exposes the instability of the body's boundaries, and that of the distinction between illness and health. This chapter reads Monsters through traditions and theorizations of the Monstrous and Grotesque, as well as cultural histories of medicine that have shed light on discourses of contagion and (in-)visibility of illness. It is the idiosyncrasies of the comics medium and its history, and those of Dahl's stylistic choices, that enable a particularly tangible representation of social and personal illness experience. Monster sind keine Seltenheit in der Geschichte U. S.-amerikanischer Comics, doch in Ken Dahls gleichnamigem 'small press'-Comic haben sie eine besondere Funktion: Dahls sich ständig wandelnde Monster erzählen eine Geschichte davon, wie ein (vermeintlicher) Träger des Herpesvirus an unaufhörlicher Sorge und sozialer Isolation leidet. Die Erzählung enthüllt die instabilen Grenzen des Körpers und die verschwommene Grenze zwischen Krankheit und Gesundheit. Dieses Kapitel liest "Monsters" im Lichte von Traditionen und Theorien des Monströsen und Grotesken sowie von kulturgeschichtlichen Studien zur Medizin, die Diskurse über Ansteckung und die (Un-)Sichtbarkeit von Krankheit genauer beleuchtet haben. Es sind die Eigenheiten des Mediums Comic und seiner Geschichte, und die von Dahls künstlerischem Stil, die hier zusammen eine besonders greifbare Darstellung von sozialer und persönlicher Krankheitserfahrung ermöglichen.

In Charles Burns’ 'Black Hole', high school students mutate as a result of a sexually transmitted disease. Contrasting the topos of positive mutation in superhero comics by Marvel or DC, Burns shows the mutation as mere deformity that cannot be employed in any aesthetic or even reasonable sense. Burns’ critical reflection depicts the transition to adulthood and puberty as a group’s monstrous transformation, while thematising the limits between reality and fantasy, individualization and conformity, as well as sexual dichotomies. The depicted metamorphoses can be described with the term 'becoming' that is employed by Deleuze and Guattari to establish the idea of a structural system of organization that shows the differences between subjects and is capable of making these differences identifiable through techniques of fantastic literature and metamorphosis. Next to the metamorphoses, the ideas of the multifariousness of 'becoming' and its infectious proliferation are reflected in Burns’ imagery along the same lines. The group-in-becoming is not shaped through traditional social paradigms or even through the consensus of a homogenous group, such as it is in the depictions offered by the superhero comic. In that its narrative and graphic design test the limits of its medium, 'Black Hole' manifests a phantasmagorical space of becoming-I. Conventional narrative forms are contrasted with a diachrony: these conditions must be reconsidered. Die von Burns dargestellten Metamorphosen lassen sich mit dem Begriff des 'Werdens' fassen, mit dem Deleuze und Guattari die Idee eines strukturalistischen Ordnungssystems etablieren, das die Differenzen der einzelnen Subjekte als deren Beziehungen untereinander erfasst und diese mittels Techniken der Phantastik und der Metamorphose erkennbar zu machen vermag. Neben den Metamorphosen, ist es die Ideen der Mannigfaltigkeit des 'Werdens' und dessen infektiöse Ausbreitung, die sich analog in Burns’ Bilderwelten findet. Die Werdungs-Gruppe wird dabei nicht durch traditionelle soziale Paradigmen geprägt oder gar durch den Konsens einer homogenen Gruppe, wie sie etwa der Superheldencomic beschreibt. Indem Narrativik und Graphik die Grenzen des Medium Comics ausloten, offenbart Black Hole einen phantasmagorischen Raum der Ich-Werdung. Konventionellen Erzählformen wird eine Diachronie entgegengesetzt, die es genauer zu bestimmen gilt.

Comics wurden als Unterrichtsgegenstand in deutschen Schulen und in der pädagogischen Literatur zum ersten Mal in den 1970er Jahren aufgegriffen. Zumeist ging es im Kunst- und Deutschunterricht darum, das Medium als Phänomen zu betrachten, seine Ästhetik und Inhalte zu analysieren und kritisch zu hinterfragen. Nicht selten mit dem Ziel, die Comics als triviales, populistisches und stereotypes Massenmedium zu charakterisieren. Die Zeiten haben sich geändert: Comics werden heute selbstverständlich als ein geeignetes Unterrichtsmedium gesehen, mit dem auf anschauliche und attraktive Weise fachspezifische und fächerübergreifende Kompetenzen vermittelt werden können. So können sie Geschichtsbewusstsein schaffen, zum kreativen Schreiben und Literaturverständnis anregen, Sprachkompetenzen ausbilden, interkulturelles Lernen fördern und bieten in Eigenproduktion eine kreative Möglichkeit Geschichten zu erzählen. Der Landesverband Berlin des BDK bot in seiner Fachtagung Kolleg_innen in sieben Workshops innovative Anregungen für einen Einsatz von Comics im Unterricht.

Immer häufiger finden verschiedenste Formen von Infografiken Einzug in Comics aller Couleur. Mit Rückgriff auf bildwissenschaftliche Grundbegriffe wird anhand zweier aktueller Beispiele nach einem Minimalkriterium dafür gefragt, was den Unterschied von einem Piktogramm zu einer Comic-Darstellung ausmachen könnte: Angenommen wird eine wechselseitige Bedingtheit von visueller Kontextbildung zur Individuation von Personen und Objekten. Es wird gezeigt, wie diese verschiedenen medialen Semantiken innerhalb des Comic-Vokabulars auf zwei unterschiedliche Weisen interagieren können. Ever more frequently, various kinds of infographics can be found within the vocabulary of comics. With recourse to picture and media theory, the article asks for a minimum criterion to differentiate a pictogram from a comic book representation: it is assumed that the individuation of characters and objects is closely interlinked to a formation of visual contexts. In conclusion, two diverging ways of interaction between these different medial semantics shall be shown.

In Britain in the late 1880s, two pop cultural icons had an extraordinary meeting: one, Ally Sloper, the fictional star of comic books and stage productions and the other Jack the Ripper, the real-life serial killer who was instantly fictionalised on page and stage as the bogeyman of the moment. The aim here is to explore the way in which this dynamic developed, with a focus on a single issue of 'Ally Sloper’s Half-Holiday' (October 20, 1888), which appeared at the point in time when it was first realised that the killings were being done by a lone individual, and when panic was at its peak. What was at stake politically in the comic’s reaction? What can it tell us about Victorian attitudes to fear, death, and poverty? About the status of women? Finally, about law and order, and the social contract that existed between citizen and police? Im Großbritannien der späten 1880er-Jahre trafen zwei Ikonen der Pop-Kultur aufeinander: Ally Sloper, der fiktive Star aus Comics und Bühnenproduktionen, und der reale Serienmörder Jack the Ripper, der umgehend als Horrorfigur der Stunde für Bühne und Literatur entdeckt und fiktionalisiert wurde. Hier soll diese Dynamik untersucht werden und zwar anhand einer einzigen Ausgabe von 'Ally Sloper’s Half-Holiday' (20. Oktober 1888). Diese erschien genau zu dem Zeitpunkt, als erstmals erkannt wurde, dass die Morde von einer einzelnen Person begangen wurden und die Panik damit ihren Höhepunkt erreichte. Welche politischen Reaktionen konnte der Comic hervorrufen? Was verrät er uns in Bezug auf das Verhältnis zu Angst, Tod und Armut im viktorianischen Zeitalter? Über den Status von Frauen? Und was sagt er über Recht und Ordnung bzw. die gesellschaftlichen Beziehungen zwischen Bürgern und Polizei aus?
