This study evaluated the influence of heat treatment and thermomechanical training on the microstructural evolution and mechanical characteristics of conventional and additive-manufactured FeMnSi-based shape memory alloys. The conventional samples were produced by casting and rolling. The additive-manufactured samples were manufactured using the laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF) technique. Both specimens were subjected to the same heat treatment and thermomechanical training. The heat treatment involved solution annealing at 1050 °C for 2 h and aging at 750 °C for 6 h, and the thermomechanical training concluded with a 4% elongation at ambient temperature followed by annealing at 250 °C for 15 min. This training cycle was repeated four times for each sample after heat treatment. The heat treatment improved the pseudoelasticity and shape memory effect of the samples. Although training further enhanced the pseudoelasticity, it also reduced the shape memory effect. Thermomechanical training led to the formation of a large number of stacking faults, which facilitated the inverse phase transformation of martensite (ε) to austenite (γ) during unloading, resulting in improved pseudoelasticity. The heat-treated additive-manufactured samples showed the highest total recovery strain owing to the pseudoelasticity and shape memory effect. This characteristic could be due to the smaller grain size and higher volume fraction of precipitates. The precipitates and grain refinement improved the conditions for partial dislocation motion by increasing the back stresses on the martensite tip.

The complex and distinct relationship between the film stress and grain boundaries (GBs) has been examined by the evolution of real-time intrinsic stress in combination with the in situ grain growth and thermal characterizations. The different intrinsic stress evolutions in the Ni and Ni–Mo films during the heating process result from the modification of GBs by Mo alloying, including GB amorphization, GB relaxation, and GB segregation. It has been found that GBs play a vital role in the stress development of nanocrystalline films. The addition of a solute can not only inhibit grain growth but also influence the stress evolution in the film by changing the atomic diffusivity at the GBs. This work provides valuable and unique insights into the effect of solutes on stress development in nanocrystalline films during annealing, permitting control of the film stress through solute addition and heat treatment, which is critical for improving the design, processing, and lifetime of advanced nanocrystalline film devices at high temperatures., Published by Ed. Thermal spray coatings are material systems with unique structures and properties that have enabled the growth and evolution of key modern technologies (i.e., gas turbines, structurally integrated components, etc.). The inherent nature of these sprayed coatings, such as their distinctive thermal and mechanical properties, has been a driving force for maintaining industrial interest. Despite these benefits and proven success in several fields, the adoption of thermal spray technology in new applications (i.e., clean energy conversion, semiconductor thermally sprayed materials, biomedical applications, etc.) at times, however, has been hindered. One possible cause could be the difficulty in concurrently maintaining coating design considerations while overcoming the complexities of the coatings and their fabrication. For instance, a coating designer must consider inherent property anisotropy, in-flight decomposition of molten material (i.e., loss of stoichiometry), and occasionally the formation of amorphous materials during deposition. It is surmisable for these challenges to increase the risk of adoption of thermal spray technology in new fields. Nevertheless, industries other than those already mentioned have benefited from taking on the risk of implementing thermal spray coatings in their infrastructure. Benefits can be quantified, for example, based on reduced manufacturing cost or enhanced component performance. In this overview paper, a historical presentation of the technological development of thermal spray coatings in several of these industries is presented. Additionally, emerging industries that have not yet attained this level of thermal spray maturation will also be discussed. Finally, where applicable, the utility and benefits of multilayer functional thermal spray coating designs will be demonstrated.

Dieser Beitrag stellt eine rechnergestützte Modellierungsstrategie vor, um Prozesskettenwissen, wie die Gestaltung der Fertigungsstufen, prozessübergreifende Fertigungsrestriktionen oder Fertigungshilfsmittel, für die Produktgestaltung zu formalisieren und im Kontext des Design for Manufacturing für Produkt- und Prozessgestaltungsentscheidungen bereitzustellen. Dabei werden am Beispiel einer Tailored-Forming-Prozesskette die Herstellungsschritte einer Multimaterial-Welle mittels eines Constraint-Satisfaction-Problems (CSP) modelliert, indem die geometrischen Transformationen einzelner Fertigungsstufen sowie Fertigungsrestriktionen in Form von Constraints und Fertigungsstufen sowie Fertigungshilfsmittel über Parameter in den CSP-Variablen formuliert werden. Das CSP ist damit in der Lage, ausgehend von einem Geometriemodell eines Bauteils eine prozesskettenorientierte Restriktionsprüfung zur Herstellbarkeitsbewertung durchzuführen und automatisiert Fertigungsstufen sowie Fertigungshilfsmittel zu konfigurieren., This paper presents a computer-aided modeling strategy to formalize process chain knowledge, such as the design of manufacturing stages, cross-process manufacturing constraints or manufacturing tools, for product design and to provide it for product and process design decisions in the context of design for manufacturing. Using the example of a tailored forming process chain, the manufacturing steps of a multi-material shaft are modeled by means of a constraint satisfaction problem (CSP) by formulating the geometric transformations of individual manufacturing steps as well as manufacturing restrictions in the form of constraints, and manufacturing steps as well as manufacturing resources via parameters in the CSP variables. The CSP is thus able to perform a process-chain-oriented restriction check for manufacturability evaluation based on a geometry model of a component and to automatically configure manufacturing stages and manufacturing resources and tools.

Acta materialia 253, 118968 (2023). doi:10.1016/j.actamat.2023.118968, Ni-Nb-based bulk glass-forming alloys are among the most promising amorphous metals for industrial applica- tions due to their incomparable combination of strength, hardness, elasticity and plasticity. However, the main drawback is the limited glass-forming ability, narrowing the field of application to solely small components. In this study, we show that minor additions of P to the binary Ni-Nb system increase the glass-forming ability by 150 % to a record value of 5 mm. P can be easily added by using an industrial Ni-P pre-alloy which is readily available. The partial substitution of Nb by Ta further boosts the glass-forming ability to values 200 % higher than that of the binary base alloy. Besides conventional X-ray diffraction measurements, the amorphous nature of the samples is verified by high-energy synchrotron X-ray diffraction experiments. Moreover, the mechanical properties of the new alloy compositions are characterized in uniaxial compression tests and Vickers hardness measurements, showing a high engineering yield strength of 3 GPa, an extended plastic regime up to 10 % strain to failure and an increase of the hardness to a maximum value of 1000 HV5. Metadislocations are novel defects recently identified in complex metallic alloys. It was reasoned that their propagation necessarily requires the orchestrated motion of hundreds of atoms along various crystallographic directions per elementary step. Here, we report on the direct observation of the motion of metadislocations on the atomic scale in the complex metallic alloy phase T-Al-Mn-Fe, using in-situ high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. We observe their propagation by discrete jumps between low-energy configurations. Using a tiling model, we determine their characteristic features including the Burgers vector, and identify their motion to take place in a mixed glide/climb process. We report on the direct in-situ observation of the motion of metadislocations in the transmission electron microscope, establishing a novel mechanism of plastic deformation in a structurally complex metallic alloy.

In carbon-reinforced concrete, the commonly used steel reinforcement is replaced with carbon fiber reinforcement textiles, enabling thin-walled elements by using new construction principles. The high drapability of textiles offers design opportunities for new concrete structures. However, commonly utilized textiles are impregnated with comparatively stiff polymeric materials to ensure load transmission into the textile, limiting drapability. In this paper, a new approach is analyzed: the use of pre-impregnated textiles cured within the concrete matrix. This enables the production of filigree, highly curved components with high mechanical performance, as needed for novel additive manufacturing methods. In the presented trials, rovings were successfully impregnated with potential impregnation materials, cured within the concrete, and compared to rovings cured outside of the concrete. The analysis of the curing process using a rolling ball test determines that all materials have to be placed in concrete 4 to 24 h after impregnation. The results of uniaxial tensile tests on reinforced concrete show that maximum load is increased by up to 87% for rovings cured within concrete (compared to non-impregnated rovings). This load increase was higher for rovings cured outside of concrete (up to 185%), indicating that the concrete environment interferes with the curing process, requiring further analysis and adaptation.

In nuclear fusion reactors, the first wall is the name given to the surface which is in direct contact with the plasma. A part of it is the divertor which is a device that removes fusion products from the plasma and impurities that have entered into it from the vessel lining. It is covered with water cooled tiles which have to withstand high temperatures and high heat fluxes. Moreover, resistance to neutron bombardment, low tritium absorption and low hydrogen permeation are additional demands. One materials concept under research is the application of a Reduced Activation Ferritic Martensitic Steel (RAFM) as a structural material with a tungsten protective coating. Since there is a considerable thermal mismatch between, a functional-graded materials concept was proposed.As the formation of undesired intermetallic Fe-W phases as well as oxidation should be avoided, cold gas spraying was chosen as manufacturing process. Two powder blends of EUROFER97 RAFM steel and a fine tungsten powder cut on the one hand and a coarser one on the other hand were tested in different ratios. The coatings were characterized with respect to their porosity and surface structure. Furthermore, the deposition efficiencies for steel and tungsten were determined each. It turned out that the deposition process is a complex mixed situation of bonding and erosion mechanisms as the deposition windows of these very different materials obviously diverge. Thus, a lower working gas temperature and pressure was advantageous in some cases. Unexpectedly, the coarser tungsten powder in general enabled to achieve better results.

Flash sintering is an electric field/current assisted sintering technique, which is reported to lower the furnace temperature and to reduce sintering time significantly. In this work, we have studied the processing of 8YSZ/NiO composites by flash sintering, for the first time. Two composites, with different amount of NiO (one below the percolation limit and another one above it) were processed in two different sintering atmospheres. Constant heating rate experiments were performed to know the minimum furnace temperature required to flash sinter the samples for a given applied electric field. Subsequently, isothermal flash sintering experiments were performed at different current densities. The flash onset temperature of the composites was lower in the reducing atmosphere compared to in air. The power dissipated in stage III of the flash was strongly influenced by the composite composition and the sintering atmosphere. The extent of densification in the composites was controlled by the current density. The composites were densified up to a relative density of ∼90% in 30 s when flash sintered in air. In reducing atmosphere, there was in-situ reduction of NiO to Ni. As a result, for composites containing NiO above the percolation limit, the current preferentially flew through the in-situ formed metallic phase and there was no densification in the composite in reducing atmosphere. Phase and microstructure evolution in the composites was studied through XRD, SEM and EDS. With proper control of the electrical parameters (electric field and current density), composites with controlled porosity can be processed through flash sintering which may have applications for solid oxide fuel cells.

The influences of mechanically activated fly ash on the microstructure and thermal behaviour of atmospheric-cured concrete panels have been evaluated. For this purpose, comparative analyses of concretes prepared with and without addition of raw and milled fly ashes were performed. The raw fly ash was activated with an attrition mill for 1 h. Cylindrical concrete specimens with and without 20% fly ash substitution and large concrete panels with the same compositions were prepared. Mechanical properties of the concrete specimens were measured after 3, 7, 28 days, 2 and 4 months. After preparation the cylindrical specimens were cured in water while the concrete panels were kept in an open atmosphere outside the building for 1 year. The 28-day compressive strengths of the non-fly ash added cylindrical concrete specimen was 61.1 MPa, raw and mechanically activated fly ash added specimens were 54.4 and 64.7 MPa, respectively. Microstructural and thermal studies of the concrete panel were performed in the core drilled specimens after 1 year curing. The compressive strength of the core drilled specimens was 26.6, 25.4 and 35.9 MPa for the non-fly ash added, raw and mechanically activated fly ash added concrete panels. A beneficial pozzolanic reaction and improved mechanical properties of the milled fly ash-substituted concrete cured under harsh weather conditions were observed and determined by differential thermal analysis-thermogravimetry and mercury intrusion porosimetry. Improved mechanical properties of the milled fly ash added panel indicates its potential applicability in industrial practice due to the simplicity of the process.

The impact of plasma nitriding on the microstructure and the hardness of a recently developed 4 wt.-% medium manganese steel are presented. In contrast to standard quench and tempering steels, the investigated material achieves its martensitic microstructure by air-cooling from the forging heat, which enables the reduction of the carbon footprint of the forged components. The influence of nitriding on this grade of steel has not been investigated so far, but fundamental differences in comparison to standard nitriding steels are expected due to the increased manganese concentration. To address this issue, nitriding treatments with different temperatures (350 °C, 580 °C and 650 °C) have been performed, followed by examinations of the microstructure, the phase composition, the obtained hardness profiles and the tensile properties of the bulk material after nitriding, accompanied by thermodynamic equilibrium calculations. It is demonstrated that after nitriding at 580 °C similar hardness profiles like standard nitriding steels are achieved, with a shorter process as austenitization and hardening were omitted, reaching a hardness of approximately 950 HV0.1. Furthermore, it was demonstrated that austenite can be stabilized by manganese and nitrogen partitioning to room temperature during nitriding in the intercritical phase region. Es wird der Einfluss des Plasmanitrierens auf das Gefüge und die Härte eines kürzlich entwickelten 4-Gew.-%-Mittelmanganstahls vorgestellt. Im Gegensatz zu Standard-Vergütungsstählen erreicht der untersuchte Werkstoff sein martensitisches Gefüge durch Luftabkühlung aus der Schmiedewärme, was die Reduzierung des Kohlenstoff-Fußabdrucks der Schmiedeteile ermöglicht. Der Einfluss des Nitrierens auf diese Stahlsorte wurde bisher noch nicht untersucht, doch werden aufgrund der erhöhten Mangankonzentration grundlegende Unterschiede im Vergleich zu Standard-Nitrierstählen erwartet. Um diese Frage zu klären, wurden Nitrierbehandlungen bei verschiedenen Temperaturen (350 °C, 580 °C und 650 °C) durchgeführt und anschließend die Mikrostruktur, die Phasenanteile, die erreichten Härteprofile und die Zugeigenschaften der Matrix nach dem Nitrieren untersucht, begleitet von thermodynamischen Gleichgewichtsberechnungen. Es wird gezeigt, dass nach dem Nitrieren bei 580 °C vergleichbare Härteprofile wie bei Standard-Nitrierstählen erzielt werden, wobei der Prozess deutlich verkürzt ist, da Austenitisierung und Härtung entfallen und eine Härte von etwa 950 HV0,1 erreicht wird. Darüber hinaus wurde gezeigt, dass Austenit durch Mangan- und Stickstoffpartitionierung bei Raumtemperatur während des Nitrierens im interkritischen Phasenbereich stabilisiert werden kann.

The abrasive behavior of M2AlX MAX phase materials (Ti2AlC, Cr2AlC, Ti2AlN) was investigated using sandblasting tests with glass beads and alumina particles. Interpretations are based on the specimens’ morphologies before and after the sandblasting tests. Overall, the abrasive behavior appears to be related to the brittleness index B, which is a function of the hardness, elastic modulus and fracture toughness. An extension of the analysis to literature data for different hardened and unhardened glasses indicated that this qualitative evaluation factor B can support in the prediction of the abrasive behavior of a wider range of brittle materials

The development of automotive components with reduced greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions is needed to reduce overall vehicle emissions. Life Cycle Engineering (LCE) based on Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) supports this by providing holistic information and improvement potentials regarding eco-efficient products. Key factors influencing LCAs of automotive components, such as material production, will change in the future. First approaches for integrating future scenarios for these key factors into LCE already exist, but they only consider a limited number of parameters and scenarios. This work aims to develop a method that can be practically applied in the industry for integrating prospective LCAs (pLCA) into the LCE of automotive components, considering relevant parameters and consistent scenarios. Therefore, pLCA methods are further developed to investigate the influence of future scenarios on the GHG emissions of automotive components. The practical application is demonstrated for a vehicle component with different design options. This paper shows that different development paths of the foreground and background system can shift the ecological optimum of design alternatives. Therefore, future pathways of relevant parameters must be considered comprehensively to reduce GHG emissions of future vehicles. This work contributes to the methodological and practical integration of pLCA into automotive development processes and provides quantitative results.

The µ phase is a common precipitation phase insuperalloysand it exists in a wide composition and temperature range. As such, we study the influences of composition and temperature on its plasticity by micropillar compression tests andtransmission electron microscopy. The micropillars of the μ-Co7Nb6phase deform plastically by basal slip at room temperature and 600 °C. At room temperature, the Co-49Nb and Co-52Nb micropillars show high yield stresses and an abrupt large strain burst at the onset of yielding regardless of orientation, whereas the Co-54Nb micropillars oriented for basal slip yield at much lower stresses and show intermittent small strain bursts duringplastic deformation. While the Co-49Nb micropillars deform by full dislocation slip on the basal plane at room temperature, the Co-54Nb micropillars deform by partial dislocation slip on the basal plane. At 600 °C, the Co-49Nb micropillars oriented for basal slip show stable and continuous plasticity and their critical resolved shear stresses decrease dramatically. In contrast to the full dislocation slip at room temperature, the plastic deformation of the Co-49Nb micropillars occurs via partial dislocation slip on the basal plane at 600 °C. Based on the geometric γ-surfaces for all potential basal slip planes, we explore where and why the glide of full and partial dislocations on the basal plane occurs in the μ-Co7Nb6phase.

The research gap between small-scale extrusion additive manufacturing (EAM) and common thick-walled large-scale approaches is addressed through the development of a Freeform Extrusion Additive Manufacturing process. It incorporates complex thin-walled composite structures, as in injection molding, into large additive build volumes. The process is further developed in all mechatronic disciplines, including process and material characterization and optimization, electrical improvements and target-oriented approaches to software technology. Die Forschungslücke zwischen der additiven Fertigung durch Extrusion in kleinem Maßstab (EAM) und den verbreiteten dickwandigen großtechnischen Ansätzen wird durch die Entwicklung eines Verfahrens zur additiven Fertigung durch Freiform-Extrusion behandelt. Dabei werden komplexe dünnwandige Verbundwerkstoffstrukturen wie beim Spritzgießen in große additiv gefertigte Volumen integriert. Der Prozess wird in allen mechatronischen Disziplinen weiterentwickelt, einschließlich Prozess- und Materialcharakterisierung und -optimierung, elektrische Verbesserungen und zielgerichtete Ansätze für die Softwaretechnologie.

Die kollaborative Teilebearbeitung mit Robotern und Werkzeugmaschinen wird in der Fertigung immer wichtiger. Durch die gleichzeitige Arbeit von Robotern und Werkzeugmaschinen kann eine noch effizientere Produktion erreicht werden. Mit der Entwicklung fortschrittlicher simulationsbasierter Lösungen können Hersteller jetzt die Zusammenarbeit von Robotern und Werkzeugmaschinen besser simulieren und überprüfen, um potenzielle Probleme zu erkennen und zu lösen, bevor sie in der realen Fertigung auftreten. Eine solche Lösung ist die NX-Offline-Simulation in Verbindung mit digitalen Zwillingen, mit der Hersteller ihre Teilebearbeitungsprogramme testen und optimieren können. Der Vortrag erläutert kurz das laufende Projekt 'RokoPro' und die Notwendigkeit des Einsatzes von Robotern in der Fertigung und der Simulation zur Überprüfung dieser Lösungen. Collaborative part processing with robots and machine tools is becoming increasingly important in manufacturing. Even more efficient production can be achieved by having robots and machine tools work simultaneously. With the development of advanced Simulation-based solutions manufacturers can now better simulate and verify the collaboration of robots and machine tools to identify and solve potential problems before they occur in real manufacturing. One such solution is NX offline simulation along with digital twins, which allows manufacturers to test and optimize their part processing programs. The presentation briefly explains the ongoing project “RokoPro” and the need for use of robots in manufacturing and simulation to check those solutions.

With an increasing number of electric vehicles on roads, recycling is an important topic to design circular supply chains for batteries. To stimulate such circular supply chains, the new EU battery directive includes mandatory recycled content in batteries and recovery rates of materials for lithium-ion batteries on the European market. Modeling the end-of-life of batteries as part of a life cycle assessment (LCA) is methodologically challenging as batteries are quite complex product systems. One of these challenges is the allocation of material impacts from different life cycle stages along subsequent product life cycles. We analyzed the different stakeholders in the life cycle of a lithium-ion battery and identified possible LCA questions based on their decision contexts. For each LCA question, an LCA archetype was defined, which includes the functional unit, the system boundary, and the allocation procedure. These archetypes are applied and tested in a case study. The results show a significant variance depending on the archetype used. This highlights the importance of understanding the stakeholder perspective in LCA and decision support.

Adaptive Materialflusssysteme befähigen die Logistik dynamisch auf wechselnde Anforderungen zu reagieren. Insbesondere in größeren Systemen treten gegenseitige Abhängigkeiten zwischen Transporten auf. Durch die in dieser Arbeit abgeleiteten Modelle und Berechnungsgrundlagen, lässt sich der Einfluss von Transportabhängigkeiten auf die Leistungsfähigkeit des Systems berechnen. Adaptive material flow systems enable logistics to react dynamically to alternating material flow requirements. Particularly, in greater material flow systems there occur mutual dependencies between different transports. This work develops models and calculation principles, which allow the calculation of the effect of transport dependencies on the performance of a system. The developed reference control architecture enables controls to consider transport dependencies in the planning phase.

JOM 74(7), 2622 - 2634 (2022). doi:10.1007/s11837-022-05320-1, The temperature evolution of the Hall–Petch parameters for basal slip and twinning systems has been evaluated for the AZ31 alloy, using synchrotron radiation diffraction during compression tests from room temperature to 473 K. The AZ31 alloy was processed following two processing routes, casting and powder metallurgy, to obtain two different grain sizes with a similar strong fiber texture. Although macroscopic plasticity is controlled by tensile twinning, the stress for the activation of basal slip can also be calculated. At low temperatures, the grain size dependence of twinning is much higher than that for basal slip. However, basal slip prevails at 473 K, especially for the alloy processed through the powder metallurgy route, because of the low tendency for twinning deformation., Published by TMS, [S.l.]
