Abstract

In this paper, we present a secure datastore based on an Ethereum smart contract. Our research is guided by three research questions. First, we will explore to what extend a smart-contract-based datastore should resemble a traditional database system. Second, we will investigate how to store the data in a smart-contract-based datastore for maximum flexibility while minimizing the gas consumption. Third, we seek answers regarding whether or not a smart-contract-based datastore should incorporate complex processing such as data encryption and data analytic algorithms. The proposed smart-contract-based datastore aims to strike a good balance between several constraints: (1) smart contracts are publicly visible, which may create a confidentiality concern for the data stored in the datastore; (2) unlike traditional database systems, the Ethereum smart contract programming language (i.e., Solidity) offers very limited data structures for data management; (3) all operations that mutate the blockchain state would incur financial costs and the developers for smart contracts must make sure sufficient gas is provisioned for every smart contract call, and ideally, the gas consumption should be minimized. Our investigation shows that although it is essential for a smart-contract-based datastore to offer some basic data query functionality, it is impractical to offer query flexibility that resembles that of a traditional database system. Furthermore, we propose that data should be structured as tag-value pairs, where the tag serves as a non-unique key that describes the nature of the value. We also conclude that complex processing should not be allowed in the smart contract due to the financial burden and security concerns. The tag-based secure datastore designed this way also defines its applicative perimeter, i.e., only applications that align with our strategy would find the proposed datastore a good fit. Those that would rather incur higher financial cost for more data query flexibility and/or less user burden on data pre- and post-processing would find the proposed database too restrictive. Abstract

Open-source software development has skyrocketed in part due to community tools like github.com, which allows publication of code as well as the ability to create branches and push accepted modifications back to the original repository. As the number and size of EM-based datasets increases, the connectomics community faces similar issues when we publish snapshot data corresponding to a publication. Ideally, there would be a mechanism where remote collaborators could modify branches of the data and then flexibly reintegrate results via moderated acceptance of changes. The DVID system provides a web-based connectomics API and the first steps toward such a distributed versioning approach to EM-based connectomics datasets. Through its use as the central data resource for Janelia's FlyEM team, we have integrated the concepts of distributed versioning into reconstruction workflows, allowing support for proofreader training and segmentation experiments through branched, versioned data. DVID also supports persistence to a variety of storage systems from high-speed local SSDs to cloud-based object stores, which allows its deployment on laptops as well as large servers. The tailoring of the backend storage to each type of connectomics data leads to efficient storage and fast queries. DVID is freely available as open-source software with an increasing number of supported storage options.

5. Load Balancing of Distributed Datastore in OpenDaylight Controller Cluster.

Abstract

Software defined networking controller platforms support clustering architectures to provide scalability and availability to large-scale carrier-grade networks. OpenDaylight, a well-known open source project, provides a clustering and distributed datastore architecture. The datastore is distributed into shards such that a subset of the shards can be located in any cluster member. To guarantee strong consistency in the datastore so all shard replicas have the same value, only the shard leader is responsible for accepting data updates. Even though OpenDaylight supports a distributed shard leader election algorithm, elected leaders are not distributed over the cluster members due to a lack of centralized control. Since update requests for the datastore are inherently concentrated in the leader, this results in unbalanced CPU usage of the controller cluster, as well as degradation of throughput in the distributed datastore. In this paper, we propose a shard leader distribution algorithm that maximizes the throughput of the distributed datastore by distributing the shard leaders to cluster members as evenly as possible. The shard leader distribution algorithm restricts the maximum number of leaders that a cluster member may have by monitoring the status of the shards within the cluster members. In the performance evaluation, we prove that shard leader distribution significantly improves the throughput of the datastore by load balancing data update requests to the cluster. This deliverable is a demonstrator of the Data Management component in AI4PublicPolicy developed in the context of work package 3, AI-based Reusable and Interoperable Policies. This component was developed in the context of task 3.1 Collection and Management of Public Policy Datasets. The Data Management component is used for loading the datasets into the AI4PublicPolicy platform. This data will be exploited by the AI analysis tools in AI4PublicPolicy. The data is stored according to the data model developed in the project based on the datasets from the different pilots. The Data Management component software is able to deal with data-at-rest and streaming data in different formats and from different data sources that can be configured. The Data Management component can deal with Big Data running in a distributed environment.

14. Cloud Platform Datastore Support.

Abstract

There are many datastore systems to choose from that differ in many ways including public versus private cloud support, data management interfaces, programming languages, supported feature sets, fault tolerance, consistency guarantees, configuration, and their deployment processes. In this paper, we focus on technologies for structured data access (database/datastore systems) in cloud systems. Our goal is to simplify the use of datastore systems through automation and to facilitate their empirical evaluation using real world applications. To enable this, we provide a cloud platform abstraction layer that decouples a data access API from its implementation. Applications that use this API can use any datastore that 'plugs into' our abstraction layer, thus enabling application portability. We use this layer to extend the functionality of multiple datastores without modifying the datastores directly. Specifically, we provide support for ACID transaction semantics for popular key-value stores (none of which provide this feature). We integrate this layer into the AppScale cloud platform-an open-source cloud platform that executes cloud applications written in Python, Java, and Go, over virtualized cluster resources and infrastructures-as-a-service (Eucalyptus, OpenStack, and Amazon EC2). A new paradigm has arrived to stay in the concept of the digital advertising. Each time counts less what the brand says and more what the people is willing to say or do for the brand. Adictik plays with that concept and turns it around, basing itself on an aspect that other successful apps had forgotten, to put a logo of a brand to each photo that it is distributed by Internet. The Adictik app is thought so that the user could be the main character of their own ads. The main functionality consists in that the user could compete with other users to demonstrate which of them is the biggest fan of a brand. To determine which of the users is the biggest fan of a brand, the app allows you to see a ranking of each brand. This ranking depends on the number of shakas that the ads of a user have of a specific brand. Moreover Adictik allows the interaction between the users that take part of the platform, allowing them to comment the ads of the others, as well as to mention them to be notified like other apps do that are very trendy nowadays. Furthermore, Adictik is considered as an essential tool for the marketing and advertising professionals, as they can be inspired by the opinions of their own consumers and see which are the biggest claims of them. Adictik can offer multiple metrics that can be very interesting for the brands. For instance the age range of their advertisers as well as the list of the biggest fans to give them a possible reward because the users are doing free advertising to that brand. The project is focused on the performance of a new Back-end for that app. For doing that the company define one essential condition that must be fulfilled to do the project. The enterprise rules that the app must be developed inside the platform that Google offers known as Google Cloud Platform. Through this document is made the emphasis on the benefits that the platform contributes to the development of the app as well as all the modules that offers you to save all the information.

Abstract

Namen diplomske naloge je primerjati SQL in NoSQL podatkovno bazo. S pomočjo mobilne aplikacije Pridem smo analizirali razlike med podatkovnima bazama, katera omogoča boljše skaliranje podatkov in kdaj je primerno uporabiti SQL in kdaj NoSQL podatkovno bazo. Med raziskavo smo se omejili na Google App Engine Datastore in MySQL tehnologijo. Z obema tehnologijama smo implementirali strežniški del za mobilno aplikacijo. Na podlagi rešitev smo prikazali razlike, prednosti ter slabosti obeh podatkovnih baz. Na koncu smo ugotovili, katera rešitev je bolj primerna za našo mobilno aplikacijo. The purpose of this diploma thesis is to compare the SQL and the NoSQL databases. With the help of the “Pridem” mobile application we analysed the differences between the two databases, which database enables better data scaling and when it would be appropriate to use the SQL and when the NoSQL database. We used both technologies to implement the server part for the mobile application. Based on the solutions, we have presented the differences, advantages and disadvantages of both databases. At the end, we determined which solution is better for our mobile application.

Abstract

V diplomski nalogi smo podrobneje predstavili področje razpodvajanja podatkov in implementirali algoritem shranjevanja objektov s privzetim odstranjevanjem podvojenih kosov. V prvem delu naloge smo predstavili shranjevalni sistem kot drevesno urejeno strukturo imenikov in datotek. Opisali smo funkcije shranjevalnega sistema ter preproste načine shranjevanja podatkov na medij. Podrobneje smo pregledali lastnosti porazdeljenega shranjevalnega sistema Ceph, njegove sestavne dele in delovanje. V drugem delu predstavimo metodo razpodvajanja podatkov kot pomembno sestavino sodobnih shranjevalnih sistemov. Pregledali smo tehnike razpodvajanja na centraliziranih in porazdeljenih sistemih. V zadnjem delu naloge smo implementirali primer razpodvajanja skupaj s preprostim sistemom za shranjevanje objektov. S pomočjo opisanih tehnik smo izvedli zaznavanje spremenljivo dolgih podvojenih kosov znotraj objektov in dodali CLI orodja za manipulacijo objektov v shrambi. In our thesis we presented the area of data deduplication and implemented an algorithm for object storage with support for elimination of duplicate chunks within those objects. In the first part we presented storage system as a tree-likestructure of directories and files. We described the features of storage system and simple ways of storing data on a medium. We examined in detail the properties of distributed storage system Ceph, it's components and operation. In the second part we presented deduplicatin as an important feature of modern storage systems. We surveyed deduplication techniques for centralized as well as distributed systems. In the last part we implemented an example of deduplication technique along with a simple object storage system. Using the described techniques we implemented detection of variable-length duplicated chunks within objects and added CLI tools for manipulating objects in the store.

Diplomová práce se zabývá tvorbou mobilní aplikace pro lokalizaci snímaných vrcholů. Současně s klientskou aplikací je vyvinuta i serverová verze, která centralizuje informace o navštívených vrcholech a umožňuje uživatelům jejich přehledné zobrazení. V teoretické části jsou popsány technologie, které byly použity při vývoji. 20. Persistence and Node FailureRecovery in Strongly Consistent Key-Value Datastore

Abstract

Consistency preservation of replicated data is a critical aspect for distributed databaseswhich are strongly consistent. Further, in fail-recovery model each process also needs todeal with the management of stable storage and amnesia [1]. CATS is a key/value datastore which combines the Distributed Hash Table (DHT) like scalability and selforganization and also provides atomic consistency of the replicated items. However beingan in memory data store with consistency and partition tolerance (CP), it suffers frompermanent unavailability in the event of majority failure. The goals of this thesis were twofold (i) to implement disk persistent storage in CATS,which would allow the records and state of the nodes to be persisted on disk and (ii) todesign nodes failure recovery-algorithm for CATS which enable the system to run with theassumption of a Fail Recovery model without violating consistency. For disk persistent storage two existing key/value databases LevelDB [2] and BerkleyDB[3] are used. LevelDB is an implementation of log structured merged trees [4] where asBerkleyDB is an implementation of log structured B+ trees [5]. Both have been used as anunderlying local storage for nodes and throughput and latency of the system with each isdiscussed. A technique to improve the performance by allowing concurrent operations onthe nodes is also discussed. The nodes failure-recovery algorithm is designed with a goalto allow the nodes to crash and then recover without violating consistency and also toreinstate availability once the majority of nodes recover. The recovery algorithm is based onpersisting the state variables of Paxos [6] acceptor and proposer and consistent groupmemberships. For fault-tolerance and recovery, processes also need to copy records from the replicationgroup. This becomes problematic when the number of records and the amount of data ishuge. Cílem této práce je ověřit funkčnost synchronizace objektových databází přes CoreData a Datastore. Ověření funkčnosti synchronizace objektových databázi jsem provedl pomocí dvou zařízení a experimentálního serveru. V předložené bakalářské práci jsem vytvořil kni- hovnu DB2iCloud, která poskytuje abstraktní rozhraní CoreData pro Datastore. Přínosem této práce je vytvoření knihovny DB2iCloud v demonstrační aplikaci a ověření funkčnosti CoreData a Datastore., The goal of this work is to verify the functionality of the synchronization object databases via CoreData and Datastore.
