Abstract

The continued non-observation of events emanating from dark matter (DM) annihilations in various direct and indirect detection experiments calls into question the mechanism for determining the relic density of a weakly interacting massive particle. However, if the relic density is determined primarily by a semi-annihilation process, as opposed to the usual annihilation, this tension can be ameliorated. Here, we investigate a Z3 symmetric effective field theory incorporating a fermionic dark matter that semi-annihilates to right-handed neutrinos (RHN). The dynamics of the RHN and the impact of its late decays are also scrutinised while obtaining the correct DM relic. Finally, indirect detection bounds on the semi-annihilation cross-sections are drawn from the gamma-ray observations in the direction of Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxies (Fermi-LAT), and including the projections obtained for the H.E.S.S. and the CTA detectors., 22 pages, 7 figures

Abstract

The present-day $B$-anomalies involving $b \to s \mu^+ \mu^-$ or $b \to c \tau^- {\bar\nu}$ transitions can all be explained with the addition of a vector $U_1$ leptoquark with a mass of $M_{U_1} \ge 1.8$ TeV. In the scalar singlet dark matter model (SSDMM), the DM is a scalar $S$ that couples to the Higgs via $\lambda_{hS} \, S^2|H|^2$. We update the fit to the data and find that the SSDMM is now viable only for $M_S \ge 1.6$ TeV. In this paper, we assume that the DM also couples to the $U_1$ via $\lambda_{U_1 S} \, S^2 \, U_{1\mu}^{\dagger} U^{\mu}_1$. In addition to leading to DM annihilation via $S S \to U_1 {\bar U}_1$, this coupling generates $SSgg$ and $SS\gamma\gamma$ couplings at one loop. Although naively divergent, these loop diagrams can be calculated under the assumption that the $U_1$ is a gauge boson of a group broken at the TeV scale. With this DM-$U_1$ coupling term, there are additional contributions to the various DM observables (relic density, direct and indirect detection). We find that the constraints on the SSDMM are relaxed for both heavy DM ($M_S \ge M_{U_1}$) and light DM ($M_S < M_{U_1}$)., Comment: 21 pages, 5 figures

We study a minimal model for a light scalar dark matter, requiring a light scalar mediator to address the core-cusp problem and interact with the standard model particles. We analyze the model comprehensively by focusing on the Breit-Wigner resonance for dark matter annihilation and self-scattering channels, considering the thermal relic abundance condition that includes the early kinetic decoupling effect, as well as the present and future constraints from collider, direct, and indirect dark matter detections. We found that the scalar dark matter with the mass of 0.3-2 GeV remains uncharted, which will be efficiently tested by the near future MeV gamma-ray observations., Comment: 30 pages, 8 figures

Journal of high energy physics 09(9), 083 (2022). doi:10.1007/JHEP09(2022)083, We study dark matter freeze-in scenarios where the mass of the mediator particle that couples dark matter to the Standard Model is larger than the reheat temperature, T$_{RH}$, in the early Universe. In such setups, the standard approach is to work with an effective field theory (EFT) where the mediator is integrated out. We examine the validity of this approach in various generic s- and t-channel mediator frameworks. We find that the EFT approach breaks down when the mediator mass is between one to two orders of magnitude larger than T$_{RH}$ due to various effects such as s-channel resonance, a small thermally-suppressed abundance of the mediator, or decays of Standard Model particles through loops induced by the mediator. This highlights the necessity of including these contributions in such dark matter freeze-in studies. We also discuss the collider phenomenology of the heavy mediators, which is qualitatively different from standard freeze-in scenarios. We highlight that, due to the low T$_{RH}$, the Standard Model-dark matter coupling in these scenarios can be relatively larger than in standard freeze-in scenarios, improving the testability prospects of these setups., Published by SISSA, [Trieste]

Abstract

We investigate the phenomenology of a scalar top-philic dark matter candidate when adding a dimension-five contact interaction term, as motivated by possible underlying extensions of the Standard Model such as composite Higgs models. We show that the presence of contact interactions can have a major impact on the dark matter relic density as well as on its direct and indirect detection prospects, while the collider phenomenology of the model is unaffected. Current constraints from direct detection experiments are already bounding the mediator mass to be well into the TeV range for WIMP-like scenarios. This motivates a consistent and systematic exploration of the parameter space to map out possible regions where the rates could be suppressed. We do indeed find such regions and proceed to construct consistent UV models that generate the relevant effective theory. We then discuss the corresponding constraints from both collider and direct-detection experiments on the same parameter space. Abstract

We present a cosmological solution to the electroweak hierarchy problem. After discussing general features of cosmological approaches to naturalness, we extend the Standard Model with two light scalars very weakly coupled to the Higgs and present the mechanism, which we recently introduced in a companion paper to explain jointly the electroweak hierarchy and the strong-CP problem. In this work we show that this solution can be decoupled from the strong-CP problem and discuss its possible implementations and phenomenology. The mechanism works with any standard inflationary sector, it does not require weak-scale inflation or a large number of e-folds, and does not introduce ambiguities related to eternal inflation. The cutoff of the theory can be as large as the Planck scale, both for the Cosmological Constant and for the Higgs sector. Reproducing the observed dark matter relic density fixes the couplings of the two new scalars to the Standard Model, offering a target to future axion or fifth force searches. Depending on the specific interaction of the scalars with the Standard Model, the mechanism either yields rich phenomenology at colliders or provides a novel joint solution to the strong-CP problem. We highlight what predictions are common to most realizations of cosmological selection of the weak scale and will allow to test this general framework in the near future., 41 pages, 11 figures

Journal of high energy physics 02(2), 042 (2022). doi:10.1007/JHEP02(2022)042, The measured branching fractions of B-mesons into leptonic final states derived by the LHCb, Belle and BaBar collaborations hint towards the breakdown of lepton flavour universality. In this work we take at face value the so-called $ {R}_{D^{\left(\ast \right)}} $ observables that are defined as the ratios of neutral B-meson charged-current decays into a D$^{(*)}$-meson, a charged lepton and a neutrino final state in the tau and light lepton channels. A well-studied and simple solution to this charged current anomaly is to introduce a scalar leptoquark S$_{1}$ that couples to the second and third generation of fermions. We investigate how S$_{1}$ can also serve as a mediator between the Standard Model and a dark sector. We study this scenario in detail and estimate the constraints arising from collider searches for leptoquarks, collider searches for missing energy signals, direct detection experiments and the dark matter relic abundance. We stress that the production of a pair of leptoquarks that decays into different final states (i.e. the commonly called ���mixed��� channels) provides critical information for identifying the underlying dynamics, and we exemplify this by studying the t��b�� and the resonant S$_{1}$ plus missing energy channels. We find that direct detection data provides non-negligible constraints on the leptoquark coupling to the dark sector, which in turn affects the relic abundance. We also show that the correct relic abundance can not only arise via standard freeze-out, but also through conversion-driven freeze-out. Journal of high energy physics 01(1), 169 (2023). doi:10.1007/JHEP01(2023)169, We study the impact of sphaleron-induced thermal friction on the axion dark-matter abundance due to the interaction of an axion-like particle (ALP) with a dark non-abelian gauge sector in a secluded thermal bath. Thermal friction can either enhance the axion relic density by delaying the onset of oscillations or suppress it by damping them. We derive an analytical formula for the $frictional$ $adiabatic$ $invariant$, which remains constant along the axion evolution and which allows us to compute the axion relic density in a general set-up. Even in the most minimal scenario, in which a single gauge group is responsible for both the generation of the ALP mass and the friction force, we find that the resulting dark-matter abundance from the misalignment mechanism deviates from the standard scenario for axion masses $m_a\gtrsim 100 \; {\rm eV}$. We also generalize our analysis to the case where the gauge field that induces friction and the gauge sector responsible for the ALP mass are distinct and their couplings to the axion have a large hierarchy as can be justified by means of alignment or clockwork scenarios. We find that it is easy to open up the ALP parameter space where the resulting axion abundance matches the observed dark-matter relic density both in the traditionally over- and underabundant regimes. Abstract

The hMSSM is a special parameterization of the minimal supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model (MSSM) in which the mass of the lightest Higgs boson is automatically set to the LHC measured value, $M_h\!\!=\!\! 125$ GeV, by adjusting the supersymmetric particle spectrum such that it provides the required amount of radiative corrections to the Higgs boson masses. The latter spectrum was in general assumed to be very heavy, as indicated by the present exclusion limits of the LHC, not to affect the phenomenology of the Higgs sector. In this work, we investigate the impact on the hMSSM by a light gaugino and higgsino sector, that is allowed by the present LHC data. In particular, we discuss the radiative corrections due to charginos and neutralinos to the Higgs boson masses and couplings and show that an hMSSM can still be realized in this context. We first describe how this scenario is implemented in the package SuSpect that generates the MSSM Higgs and supersymmetric spectra. We then analyze the possible impact of Higgs boson decays into these new states, as well as the reverse cascade channels with Higgs bosons in the final states, for the constraints on the MSSM Higgs sector at the LHC. We further explore the cosmological constraints on the hMSSM with a light gaugino--higgsino spectrum. We analyze the relic abundance of the lightest neutralino as a candidate of the dark matter in the Universe and the constraints on its mass and couplings by the present and future astroparticle physics experiments.

If nature is supersymmetric, three portals to the visible sector���a gauge portal, a Higgs portal, and a gaugino portal���are present. We present gamma ray spectra relevant for indirect detection of dark matter annihilation in such setups. Since symmetries in the secluded sector can stabilize dark matter, R-parity is unnecessary, and we investigate the impact of R-parity violation on annihilation spectra. Abstract

Journal of high energy physics 10(10), 126 (2022). doi:10.1007/JHEP10(2022)126, We calculate the leading radiative corrections to the dark-matter-nucleon scattering in the pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone dark matter model augmented with a second Higgs doublet (S2HDM). In this model, the cross sections for the scattering of the dark-matter on nuclei vanishes at tree-level in the limit of zero momentum-transfer due to a U(1) symmetry. However, this symmetry is softly broken in order to give a mass to the dark-matter particle. As a consequence, non-vanishing scattering cross sections arise at the loop level. We find that the current cross-section limits from dark-matter direct-detection experiments can hardly constrain the parameter space of the S2HDM. However, the loop-corrected predictions for the scattering cross sections can be well within the reach of future direct-detection experiments. Journal of cosmology and astroparticle physics 05(5), 004 (2022). doi:10.1088/1475-7516/2022/05/004, The U$\mu \nu$SSM is a U(1)' extension of the U$\mu \nu$SSM supersymmetric model, where baryon-number-violating operators as well as explicit mass terms are forbidden, and the potential domain wall problem is avoided. The gauge anomaly-cancellation conditions impose the presence of exotic quark superfields in the spectrum of U$\mu \nu$SSM models, and allow the presence of several singlet superfields under the standard model gauge group, in addition to the right-handed neutrino superfields. The gauge structure implies an additional discrete Z $_{2}$ symmetry in the superpotential, ensuring the stability of a singlet which behaves as WIMP dark matter without invoking R-parity. We analyze this novel possibility in detail, using the fermionic component of the singlet as the dark matter candidate. In particular, we compute its amount of relic density via Z', Higgs-right sneutrino and dark matter mediated annihilations, and its potential signals in dark matter direct detection experiments. The constraints on the parameter space due to Z'; direct searches at the LHC are imposed in the analysis, as well as those from the hadronization inside the detector of the exotic quarks. Journal of cosmology and astroparticle physics 10(10), 053 (2022). doi:10.1088/1475-7516/2022/10/053, The main mechanism responsible for Axion-Like-Particle (ALP) production in the early universe is the so-called misalignment mechanism. Three regimes have been investigated in this context: standard misalignment, large misalignment and kinetic misalignment. The latter applies if the axion inherits a large initial velocity in the early universe, such that the field rolls through many wiggles during its evolution, before it gets trapped in one minimum. This largely opens the region of parameter space for ALP dark matter towards higher values for the axion-photon coupling, which can be probed by the whole set of next decade's upcoming experiments. In fact, almost the entire parameter space in the [mass, decay constant] plane can now accommodate dark matter. In this paper, we show that in kinetic misalignment, the axion field is almost always entirely fragmented, meaning that the energy density of the homogeneous field is redistributed over higher-mode axions. We present a general model-independent analytical description of kinetic fragmentation, including discussion of the modified initial conditions for the mode functions due to the axion's initial velocity, and how they impact the growth of the adiabatic fluctuations. We calculate precisely the parameter regions corresponding respectively to standard misalignment, kinetic misalignment with weak fragmentation, fragmentation after trapping and fragmentation before trapping. While axion fragmentation can impact the precise determination of the relic abundance, another main observational implication is the formation of much denser compact axion halos, that is described in a companion paper. Abstract

The measured branching fractions of $B$-mesons into leptonic final states derived by the LHCb collaboration hint towards the breakdown of lepton flavour universality. In this work we take at face value the so-called $R_{D^{(*)}}$ observables that are defined as the ratios of neutral $B$-meson charged-current decays into a charged $D$-meson, a charged lepton and a neutrino final state in the tau and muon channels. A well-studied and simple solution to this charged current anomaly is to introduce a scalar leptoquark $S_1$ that couples to the second and third generation of fermions. We investigate how $S_1$ can also serve as a mediator between the Standard Model and a dark sector. We study this scenario in detail and estimate the constraints arising from collider searches for leptoquarks, collider searches for missing energy signals, direct detection experiments and the dark matter relic abundance. We stress that the production of a pair of leptoquarks that decays into different final states (i.e. the commonly called "mixed" channels) provides critical information for identifying the underlying dynamics, and we exemplify this by studying the $t \tau b \nu$ and the resonant $S_1$ plus missing energy channels. We find that direct detection data provides non-negligible constraints on the leptoquark coupling to the dark sector, which in turn affects the relic abundance. We also show that the correct relic abundance can not only arise via standard freeze-out, but also through conversion-driven freeze-out. Abstract

The European physical journal / C 81(11), 992 (2021). doi:10.1140/epjc/s10052-021-09712-6, We assess the status of a wide class of WIMP dark matter (DM) models in light of the latest experimental results using the global fitting framework GAMBIT. We perform a global analysis of effective field theory (EFT) operators describing the interactions between a gauge-singlet Dirac fermion and the Standard Model quarks, the gluons and the photon. In this bottom-up approach, we simultaneously vary the coefficients of 14 such operators up to dimension 7, along with the DM mass, the scale of new physics and several nuisance parameters. Our likelihood functions include the latest data from Planck, direct and indirect detection experiments, and the LHC. For DM masses below 100 GeV, we find that it is impossible to satisfy all constraints simultaneously while maintaining EFT validity at LHC energies. For new physics scales around 1 TeV, our results are influenced by several small excesses in the LHC data and depend on the prescription that we adopt to ensure EFT validity. Furthermore, we find large regions of viable parameter space where the EFT is valid and the relic density can be reproduced, implying that WIMPs can still account for the DM of the universe while being consistent with the latest data., Published by Springer, Heidelberg

When the vacuum like energy of the Higgs potential within the standard model undergoes electroweak phase transition, an influx of entropy into the primordial plasma can lead to a significant dilution of frozen out dark matter density that was already present before the onset of the phase transition. The same effect can take place, if the early Universe was dominated by primordial black holes of small mass, evaporating before the period of Big Bang Nucleosynthesis. We consider the production of dark matter during the process of reheating after inflation. The relic density of dark matter from freeze-in depends on both the energy density and energy distribution of the inflaton scattering or decay products composing the radiation bath. We compare the perturbative and non-perturbative calculations of the energy density in radiation. We also consider the (likely) possibility that the final state scalar products are unstable. Assuming either thermal or non-thermal energy distribution functions, we compare the resulting relic density based on these different approaches. Abstract

We consider a multi-component dark matter model where the dark sector contains a scalar doublet and a complex scalar singlet. We impose a discrete $Z_4$ symmetry to ensure such that the lightest component of the doublet, $\tilde{A}$, and the singlet, $\tilde{S}$, are both stable. Interactions between the dark sectors impact significantly dark matter observables, they allow in particular to significantly relax the direct detection constraints on the model. To determine the parameter space that satisfies relic density, theoretical and collider constraints as well as direct and indirect detection limits, we perform two separate scans, the first includes the full parameter space of the model while the second is dedicated to scenarios with a compressed inert doublet spectrum. In the first case we find that the singlet is generally the dominant dark matter component while in the compressed case the doublet is more likely to be the dominant dark matter component. In both cases we find that the two dark matter particles can have masses that ranges from around $m_h/2$ to over the TeV scale. We emphasize the interplay between cosmological astrophysical and collider constraints and show that a large fraction of the parameter space that escapes current constraints is within the sensitivity reach of future detectors such as XENON-nT, Darwin or CTA. Important collider signatures are mostly found in the compressed spectrum case with the possibility of probing the model with searches for heavy stable charged particles and disappearing tracks. We also show that semi-annihilation processes such as $\tilde{S}\tilde{S}\to \tilde{A}Z$ could give the dominant signature in indirect detection searches., 44 pages, 24 figures

Abstract

We discovered a chiral enhancement in the production cross-sections of massive spin-2 gravitons, below the electroweak symmetry breaking scale, that makes them ideal dark matter candidates for the freeze-in mechanism. The result is independent on the physics at high scales, and points towards masses in the MeV range. The graviton is, therefore, a warm dark matter particle, as favoured by the small scale galaxy structures. We apply the novel calculation to a Randall-Sundrum model with three branes, showing a significant parameter space where the first two massive gravitons saturate the dark matter relic density.

Abstract

Astrophysical observations provide strong evidence that more than 80% of all matter in the Universe is in the form of dark matter (DM). Two leading candidates of particles beyond the Standard Model that could constitute all or a fraction of the DM content are the so-called Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) and Axion-Like Particles (ALPs). The upcoming Cherenkov Telescope Array, which will observe gamma rays between 20 GeV and 300 TeV with unprecedented sensitivity, will have unique capabilities to search for these DM candidates. A particularly promising target for WIMP searches is the Galactic Center. WIMPs with annihilation cross sections correctly producing the DM relic density will be detectable with CTA, assuming an Einasto-like density profile and WIMP masses between 200 GeV and 10 TeV. Abstract

We provide an updated and improved study of the prospects of the H.E.S.S. and Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) experiments in testing neutralino dark matter in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model with nine free parameters (p9MSSM). We include all relevant experimental constraints and theoretical developments, in particular the calculation of the Sommerfeld enhancement for both present-day annihilation and the relic abundance. We perform a state-of-the-art analysis of the CTA sensitivity with a log-likelihood test ratio statistics and apply it to a numerical scan of the p9MSSM parameter space focusing on a TeV scale dark matter. We find that, assuming Einasto profile of dark matter halo in the Milky Way, H.E.S.S. has already been able to nearly reach the so-called thermal WIMP value, while CTA will go below it by providing a further improvement of at least an order of magnitude. Both H.E.S.S. and CTA are sensitive to several cases for which direct detection cross section will be below the so-called neutrino floor, with H.E.S.S. being sensitive to most of the wino region, while CTA also covering a large fraction of the ~1 TeV higgsino region. We show that CTA sensitivity will be further improved in the monochromatic photon search mode for both single-component and underabundant dark matter., Comment: 33 pages, 6 figures, supplemental material with CTA limits provided. Abstract

We consider an effective field theory framework with three standard model (SM) gauge singlet right handed neutrinos, and an additional SM gauge singlet scalar field. The framework successfully generates eV masses of the light neutrinos via seesaw mechanism, and accommodates a feebly interacting massive particle (FIMP) as dark matter candidate. Two of the gauge singlet neutrinos participate in neutrino mass generation, while the third gauge singlet neutrino is a FIMP dark matter. We explore the correlation between the $\textit{vev}$ of the gauge singlet scalar field which translates as mass of the BSM Higgs, and the mass of dark matter, which arises due to relic density constraint. We furthermore explore the constraints from the light neutrino masses in this set-up. We chose the gauge singlet BSM Higgs in this framework in the TeV scale. We perform a detailed collider analysis to analyse the discovery prospect of the TeV scale BSM Higgs through its di-fatjet signature, at a future $pp$ collider which can operate with $\sqrt{s}=100$ TeV c.m.energy., 39 pages, 15 figures

Singlet scalar Dark Matter can naturally arise in composite Higgs models as an additional stable pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone boson. We study the properties of such a candidate in a model based on $SU(6)/SO(6)$, with the light quark masses generated by 4-fermion interactions. The presence of non-linearities in the couplings allows to saturate the relic density for masses $400 < m_{\rm DM} < 1000$ GeV, and survive the bound from Direct Detection and Indirect Detection. Journal of cosmology and astroparticle physics 2021(10), 001 (2021). doi:10.1088/1475-7516/2021/10/001, We show that dark matter can be accounted for by an axion that solves the strong CP problem, but is much lighter than usual due to a $Z_\mathcal{N}$ symmetry. The whole mass range from the canonical QCD axion down to the ultra-light regime is allowed, with $3\le\mathcal{N}\lesssim65$. This includes the first proposal of a 'fuzzy dark matter' QCD axion with $m_a\sim10^{-22}$ eV. A novel misalignment mechanism occurs - trapped misalignment - due to the peculiar temperature dependence of the $Z_{\mathcal{N}}$ axion potential. The dark matter relic density is enhanced because the axion field undergoes two stages of oscillations: it is first trapped in the wrong minimum, which effectively delays the onset of true oscillations. Trapped misalignment is more general than the setup discussed here, and may hold whenever an extra source of Peccei-Quinn breaking appears at high temperatures. Furthermore, it will be shown that trapped misalignment can dynamically source the recently proposed kinetic misalignment mechanism. All the parameter space is within tantalizing reach of the experimental projects for the next decades. We point out that, when fundamental quanta of the strong sector are swept into expanding bubbles of the confined phase, the distance between them is large compared to the confinement scale. We suggest a modelling of the subsequent dynamics and find that the flux linking the fundamental quanta deforms and stretches towards the wall, producing an enhanced number of composite states upon string fragmentation. The composite states are highly boosted in the plasma frame, which leads to additional particle production through the subsequent deep inelastic scattering. We study the consequences for the abundance and energetics of particles in the universe and for bubble-wall Lorentz factors. Journal of high energy physics 10, 215 (2021). doi:10.1007/JHEP10(2021)215, We investigate a possible realization of pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone (pNG) dark matter in the framework of a singlet-extended 2 Higgs doublet model (S2HDM). pNG dark matter gained attraction due to the fact that direct-detection constraints can be avoided naturally because of the momentum-suppressed scattering cross sections, whereas the relic abundance of dark matter can nevertheless be accounted for via the usual thermal freeze-out mechanism. We confront the S2HDM with a multitude of theoretical and experimental constraints, paying special attention to the theoretical limitations on the scalar potential, such as vacuum stability and perturbativity. In addition, we discuss the complementarity between constraints related to the dark matter sector, on the one hand, and to the Higgs sector, on the other hand. In our numerical discussion we explore the Higgs funnel region with dark matter masses around 60 GeV using a genetic algorithm. We demonstrate that the S2HDM can easily account for the measured relic abundance while being in agreement with all relevant constraints. We also discuss whether the so-called center-of-galaxy excesses can be accommodated, possibly in combination with a Higgs boson at about 96 GeV that can be the origin of the LEP- and the CMS-excess observed at this mass in the b$ \overline{b} $-quark and the diphoton final state, respectively., Published by SISSA, [Trieste]

In Dark Minimal Flavour Violation, a simple framework of flavoured dark matter with new sources of flavour violation, the constraints from thermal freeze-out, direct detection experiments, and flavour physics create well-defined benchmark scenarios for these models. We study the LHC phenomenology of four such scenarios, focusing on final states where a single top quark is produced accompanied by no jets, one jet from the fragmentation of light quarks or a $b$-tagged jet. For each of these signatures we develop a realistic LHC analysis, and we show that the proposed analyses would increase the parameter space coverage for the four benchmarks, compared to existing flavour-conserving LHC analyses. We confront the S2HDM witha multitude of theoretical and experimentalconstraints, paying special attention to thetheoretical limitations on the scalar potential,such as vacuum stability and perturbativity.In addition, we discussthe complementarity between constraintsrelated to the dark matter sector, on theone hand, and to the Higgs sector, on the other hand.In our numerical discussion we explore theHiggs funnel region with dark mattermasses around 60GeV using a genetic algorithm.We demonstrate that the S2HDM can easilyaccount for the measured relic abundance whilebeing in agreement with all relevant constraints.We also discuss whether the so-calledcenter-of-galaxy excesses can beaccommodated,possibly incombination with a Higgsboson at about 96GeV that can be the originof the LEP- and the CMS-excess observed at this massin the $b \bar b$-quark andthe diphoton final state, respectively.

Abstract

Unlike its minimal counterpart, the Next to Minimal supersymmetric Standard Model (NMSSM) allows the possibility that the lightest neutralino could have a mass as small as $\sim 1 {\rm GeV}$ while still providing a significant component of relic dark matter (DM). Such a neutralino can provide an invisible decay mode to the Higgs as well. Further, the observed SM-like Higgs boson ($H_{125}$) could also have an invisible branching fraction as high as $\sim 19\%$. Led by these facts, we first delineate the region of parameter space of the NMSSM with a light neutralino ($M_{{\tilde{\chi}}_{1}^{0}} < 62.5 {\rm GeV}$) that yields a thermal neutralino relic density smaller than the measured relic density of cold dark matter, and is also compatible with constraints from collider searches, searches for dark matter, and from flavor physics. We then examine the prospects for probing the NMSSM with a light neutralino via direct DM detection searches, via invisible Higgs boson width experiments at future $e^+e^-$ colliders, via searches for a light singlet Higgs boson in $2b2\mu$, $2b2\tau$ and $2\mu2\tau$ channels and via pair production of winos or doublet higgsinos at the high luminosity LHC and its proposed energy upgrade. For this last-mentioned electroweakino search, we perform a detailed analysis to map out the projected reach in the $3l+{\rm E{\!\!\!/}_T}$ channel, assuming that chargino decays to $W {\tilde{\chi}}_{1}^{0}$ and the neutralino(s) decay to $Z$ or $H_{125}$ + ${\tilde{\chi}}_{1}^{0}$. We find that the HL-LHC can discover SUSY in just part of the parameter space in each of these channels, which together can probe almost the entire parameter space. Abstract

The U$\mu\nu$SSM is a $U(1)'$ extension of the $\mu\nu$SSM supersymmetric model, where baryon-number-violating operators as well as explicit mass terms are forbidden, and the potential domain wall problem is avoided. The gauge anomaly-cancellation conditions impose the presence of exotic quark superfields in the spectrum of U$\mu\nu$SSM models, and allow the presence of several singlet superfields under the standard model gauge group, in addition to the right-handed neutrino superfields. The gauge structure implies an additional discrete $Z_2$ symmetry in the superpotential, ensuring the stability of a singlet which behaves as WIMP dark matter without invoking $R$-parity. We analyze this novel possibility in detail, using the fermionic component of the singlet as the dark matter candidate. In particular, we compute its amount of relic density via $Z'$, Higgs-right sneutrino and dark matter mediated annihilations, and its potential signals in dark matter direct detection experiments. The constraints on the parameter space due to $Z'$ direct searches at the LHC are imposed in the analysis, as well as those from the hadronization inside the detector of the exotic quarks. Large regions of the parameter space turn out to be in the reach of the upcoming Darwin experiment.

33. String Fragmentation in Supercooled Confinement and implications for Dark Matter

Abstract

A strongly-coupled sector can feature a supercooled confinement transition in the early universe. We point out that, when fundamental quanta of the strong sector are swept into expanding bubbles of the confined phase, the distance between them is large compared to the confinement scale. The flux linking the fundamental quanta then deforms and stretches towards the wall, producing an enhanced number of composite states upon string fragmentation. The composite states are highly boosted in the plasma frame, which leads to additional particle production through the subsequent deep inelastic scattering. We propose a modelling of these dynamics and study the consequences for the abundance and energetics of particles in the universe and for bubble-wall Lorentz factors. This opens several new avenues of investigation, which we begin to explore here, showing that the composite dark matter relic density is affected by many orders of magnitude.

29 pp. (2021)., A combination of two searches for dark matter is presented, along with results from a wide range of experimental analyses that are interpreted in a common benchmark model: a Two-Higgs-Doublet Model with a pseudoscalar mediator. The analyses use up to 139 fb$^{-1}$ of proton-proton collision data at a centre-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector at the LHC between 2015-2018. The results from two searches targeting the $E_T^{\textrm{miss}}+Z(\ell\ell)$ and $E_T^{\textrm{miss}}+h(b\bar{b})$ signatures are statistically combined. The constraints of a wide range of additional experimental analyses, targeting final states with and without invisible particles, are evaluated and summarised alongside the combination in several interpretations within this model.

Abstract

We investigate the role of the Higgs \emph{doublet} in the thermal decoupling of multi-TeV dark matter coupled to the Weak interactions of the Standard Model and the Higgs. The Higgs doublet can mediate a long-range force that affects the annihilation processes and binds dark matter into bound states. More importantly, the emission of a Higgs doublet by a pair of dark matter particles can give rise to extremely rapid monopole bound-state formation processes and bound-to-bound transitions. We compute these effects in the unbroken electroweak phase. To this end, we consider the simplest renormalisable fermionic model, consisting of a singlet and a doublet under $SU_{L}(2)$ that are stabilised by a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry, in the regime where the two multiplets coannihilate. Abstract

We couple a sterile neutrino sector to a spin-3/2 particle and show that with a Planck reduced coupling, we can obtain a sufficiently long lifetime making the spin-3/2 particle a good dark matter candidate. We show that this dark matter candidate can be produced during inflationary reheating through the scattering of Standard Model particles. The relic abundance as determined by Planck and other experimental measurements is attained for reasonable values of the reheating temperature $T_{\rm RH} \gtrsim 10^{8}$ GeV. We consider two possible gauge invariant couplings to the extended Standard Model. We find a large range of masses are possible which respect the experimental limits on its decay rate. Abstract

We consider models of decaying spin-1 dark matter whose dominant coupling to the standard model sector is through a dark-Higgs Yukawa portal connecting a TeV-scale vector-like lepton to the standard model (right-handed) electron. Below the electron-positron threshold, dark matter has very slow, loop-suppressed decays to photons and (electron) neutrinos, and is stable on cosmological time-scale for sufficiently small gauge coupling values. Its relic abundance is set by in-equilibrium dark lepton decays, through the freeze-in mechanism. We show that this model accommodates the observed dark matter abundance for natural values of its parameters and a dark matter mass in the ~5keV to 1MeV range, while evading constraints from direct detection, indirect detection, stellar cooling and cosmology. Abstract

Scenarios for multi-component scalar dark matter based on a single $Z_N$ ($N\geq 4$) symmetry are simple and well-motivated. In this paper we investigate, for the first time, the phenomenology of the $Z_5$ model for two-component dark matter. This model, which can be seen as an extension of the well-known singlet scalar model, features two complex scalar fields--the dark matter particles--that are Standard Model singlets but have different charges under a $Z_5$ symmetry. The interactions allowed by the $Z_5$ give rise to novel processes between the dark matter particles that affect their relic densities and their detection prospects, which we study in detail. The key parameters of the model are identified and its viable regions are characterized by means of random scans. We show that, unlike the singlet scalar model, dark matter masses below the TeV are still compatible with present data. Even though the dark matter density turns out to be dominated by the lighter component, we find that current and future direct detection experiments may be sensitive to signals from both dark matter particles., 29 pages, 14 figures

We present a thorough analysis of the sequential freeze-in mechanism for dark matter production in the early universe. In this mechanism the dark matter relic density results from pair annihilation of mediator particles which are themselves produced by thermal collisions of standard model particles. Below some critical value of the mediator coupling to standard model fields, this sequential channel dominates over the usual freeze-in where dark matter is directly produced from thermal collisions, even when the mediator is not in thermal equilibrium. Abstract

We propose a new non-thermal mechanism of dark matter production based on vacuum misalignment. A global $X$-charge asymmetry is generated at high temperatures, under which both the will-be Higgs and the dark matter are charged. At lower energies, the vacuum changes alignment and breaks the $U(1)_X$, leading to the emergence of the Higgs and of a fraction of charge asymmetry stored in the stable dark matter relic. This mechanism can be present in a wide variety of models based on vacuum misalignment, and we demonstrate it in a composite Higgs template model, where all the necessary ingredients are naturally present. Abstract

We study the phenomenology of a class of minimally modified gravity theories called $f(\mathcal{H})$ theories, in which the usual general relativistic Hamiltonian constraint is replaced by a free function of it. After reviewing the construction of the theory and a consistent matter coupling, we analyze the dynamics of cosmology at the levels of both background and perturbations, and present a concrete example of the theory with a $3$-parameter family of the function $f$. Finally, we compare this example model to Planck data as well as some later-time probes, showing that such a realization of $f(\mathcal{H})$ theories fits the data significantly better than the standard $\Lambda$CDM model, in particular by modifying gravity at intermediate redshifts, $z\simeq743$., Comment: 21 pages, 10 figures, matches with published version

We consider the possibility that thermalized dark-matter particles acquire their mass thanks to the spontaneous breaking of a symmetry below some critical temperature. We describe the regime where a freeze out mechanism takes place shortly after the onset of the phase transition, while the dark-matter mass has not yet reached its final constant value. Abstract

We propose a new paradigm for the thermal production of dark matter in the early universe, in which dark-matter particles acquire their mass and freeze out spontaneously from the thermal bath after a dark phase transition takes place. The decoupling arises because the dark-matter particles become suddenly non-relativistic and not because of any decay channel becoming kinematically close. We propose a minimal scenario in which a scalar and a fermionic dark-matter are in thermal equilibrium with the Standard-Model bath. We compute the finite temperature corrections to the scalar potential and identify a region of the parameter space where the fermionic dark-matter mass spontaneously jumps over the temperature when the dark phase transition happens. We explore the phenomenological implications of such a model in simple cases and show that the annihilation cross section of dark-matter particles has to be larger by more than one order of magnitude as compared to the usual constant-mass WIMP scenario in order to accomodate the correct relic abundance. We show that in the spontaneous freeze out regime a TeV-scale fermionic dark-matter that annihilates into leptons through s-wave processes can be accessible to detection in the near future., 14 pages, 8 figures

Abstract

Thermal freeze-out is a prominent example of dark matter (DM) production mechanism in the early Universe that can yield the correct relic density of stable weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs). At the other end of the mass scale, many popular extensions of the Standard Model predict the existence of ultra-light scalar fields. These can be coupled to matter, preferentially in a universal and shift-symmetry-preserving way. We study the impact of such conformal and disformal couplings on the relic density of WIMPs, without introducing modifications to the thermal history of the Universe. This can either result in an additional thermal contribution to the DM relic density or suppress otherwise too large abundances compared to the observed levels. In this work, we assume that the WIMPs only interact with the standard model via the light scalar portal. We use simple models of fermionic or scalar DM, although a similar discussion holds for more sophisticated scenarios, and predict that their masses should be between $\sim 100~\textrm{GeV}$ and several $\textrm{TeV}$ to comply both with the DM abundance and current bounds on the couplings of the light scalars to matter at the LHC. Abstract

This mechanism precisely selects the dark matter mass that gives the observed relic abundance. This is qualitatively different from existing models of thermal dark matter, where fixing the relic density typically leaves open orders of magnitude of viable dark matter masses. Forbidden annihilations require the dark matter to be close in mass to the particles that dominate its annihilation rate. We show examples where the dark matter mass is close to the muon mass, the tau mass, or the average of the tau and muon masses. We find that most of the relevant parameter space can be covered by the next generation of proposed beam-dump experiments and future high-luminosity electron positron colliders. Abstract

In some models of thermal relic dark matter, the relic abundance may be set by inelastic scattering processes (rather than annihilations) becoming inefficient as the universe cools down. This effect has been called coscattering. We present a procedure to numerically solve the full momentum-dependent Boltzmann equations in coscattering, which allows for a precise calculation of the dark matter relic density including the effects of early kinetic decoupling. We apply our method to a simple model, containing a fermionic SU(2) triplet and a fermionic singlet with electroweak-scale masses, at small triplet-singlet mixing. The relic density can be set by either coannihilation or, at values of the mixing angle $\theta\lesssim 10^{-5}$, by coscattering. We identify the parameter ranges which give rise to the observed relic abundance. Abstract

The formation of stable or meta-stable bound states can dramatically affect the phenomenology of dark matter (DM). Although the capture into bound states via emission of a vector is known to be significant, the capture via scalar emission suffers from cancellations that render it important only within narrow parameter space. While this is true for neutral scalar mediators, here we show that bound-state formation via emission of a charged scalar can be extremely significant. To this end, we consider DM charged under a dark $U(1)$ force and coupled also to a light complex scalar that is charged under the same gauge symmetry. We compute the cross-sections for bound-state formation via emission of the charged scalar, and show that they can exceed those for capture via vector emission, as well as annihilation, by orders of magnitude. This holds even for very small values of the DM coupling to the charged scalar, and remains true in the limit of global symmetry. We then compute the DM thermal freeze-out, and find that the capture into meta-stable bound states via emission of a charged scalar can cause a late period of significant DM depletion. Our results include analytical expressions in the Coulomb limit, and are readily generalisable to non-Abelian interactions. We expect them to have implications for Higgs-portal scenarios of multi-TeV WIMP DM, as well as scenarios that feature dark Higgses or (darkly-)charged inert scalars, including models of self-interacting DM., Comment: 33 pages, 20 figures

Abstract

The evidence of Dark Matter (DM) is one of the strongest observational arguments in favour of physics beyond the Standard Model. Despite expectations, a similar evidence has been lacking so far in collider searches, with the possible exception of $B$-physics discrepancies, a coherent set of persistent deviations in a homogeneous dataset consisting of $b \to c$ and $b \to s$ semi-leptonic transitions. We explore the question whether DM and the $B$ discrepancies may have a common origin. We do so in the context of the so-called 4321 gauge model, a UV-complete and calculable setup that yields a $U_1$ leptoquark, the by far most successful single mediator able to explain the $B$ anomalies, along with other new gauge bosons, including a $Z^\prime$. Adding to this setup a 'minimal' DM fermionic multiplet, consisting of a ${\bf 4}$ under the 4321's $SU(4)$, we find the resulting model in natural agreement with the relic-density observation and with the most severe direct-detection bounds, in the sense that the parameter space selected by $B$ physics is also the one favoured by DM phenomenology. The DM candidate is a particle with a mass in the WIMP range, freeze-out dynamics includes a co-annihilator (the 'rest' of the ${\bf 4}$ multiplet), and the most important gauge mediator in the DM sector is the $Z^\prime$., Comment: 33 pages, 7 figures
