The clownfish - sea anemone system is a great example of symbiotic mutualism where host «toxicity» does not impact its symbiont partner, although the underlying protection mechanism remains unclear. The regulation of nematocyst discharge in cnidarians involves N-acetylated sugars like sialic acid, that bind chemoreceptors on the tentacles of sea anemones, leading to the release of stings. It has been suggested that clownfish could be deprived of sialic acid on their skin surface, sparing them from being stung and facilitating mutualism with sea anemones. In this study, we sampled the skin mucus of two anemone symbionts, the clownfish Amphiprion akindynos and the juvenile damselfish Dascyllus trimaculatus, as well as two non-symbiotic adult damselfish Pomacentrus moluccensis and P. pavo. The free and total sialic acid content, including its conjugated form, and three other intermediates of this pathway were quantified using a stable isotope dilution mass spectrometry approach. We found significantly higher levels of sialic acid and its precursor in the non-symbiotic damselfishes. Concentrations of total sialic acid in anemone symbionts ranged between 13 µM and 16 µM, whereas the non-symbiotic damselfishes ranged between 21 µM and 30 µM. The presence of this metabolite and its precursors, as triggers of nematocyst discharge, in anemone symbionts, suggests that this is not the direct mechanism of protection or that the trigger is concentration dependent. This experiment demonstrates that anemone symbionts are not spared by nematocysts because of a lack of N-acetylated sugars, as previously thought, rather the biochemical mechanisms involving N-acetylated sugars are more complex than just a presence/absence of these molecules. Chromis tweddlei, a new species of damselfish, is described from seven specimens, 88.8–111.1 mm standard length (SL), collected during a 2008 expedition by the R.V. Dr. Fridtjof Nansen at 214–219 m depth (an unusually deep occurrence for the genus) on the Cargados Carajos Bank, Mascarene Plateau, southwestern Indian Ocean. Chromis tweddlei sp. nov. closely resembles Chromis axillaris, Chromis pelloura, and Chromis woodsi, the only congeners occurring in the western Indian Ocean (WIO) that share the character of having 14 dorsal‐fin spines and a dark caudal band. Chromis tweddlei sp. nov. can be distinguished from its regional congeners by having II,13–14 anal‐fin rays, 19–20 pectoral‐fin rays, 18–19 tubed lateral‐line scales, 4 scales above lateral line to the origin of dorsal fin, 29–32 total gill rakers, and colouration, including a caudal band that tapers anteriorly the full length of the caudal peduncle. Melatonin and dopamine participate in the regulation of reproduction-related hormone/peptide synthesis and secretion at the hypothalamic–pituitary–gonadal axis in fish. Here, we report a unique reproduction-related interaction of melatonin and dopamine in the brain of the sapphire devil Chrysiptera cyanea, a tropical damselfish with a long-day preference. We examined the expression of arylalkylamine N-acetyltransferase 2 (aanat2)—a rate-limiting enzyme of melatonin, dopamine 2b receptor (d2b), gonadotropin-releasing hormone (gnrh1), and β-subunit of follicle-stimulating hormone (fshβ) and luteinizing hormone (lhβ)—in the brain of the sapphire devil. During the reproductive season, mature females were divided into the early vitellogenesis (EV), late vitellogenesis (LV), and post-spawning (PS) stages; a day-low and night-high profile of aanat2 was observed during EV and LV but not during PS. There were nocturnal increases in gnrh1 during EV and LV as well as d2b during LV, suggesting that melatonin has a positive effect on the levels of gnrh1 and d2b transcripts in mature fish. When the brains of females in the non-breeding season were sampled at 4-h intervals, nocturnal increases in the levels of fshβ and lhβ transcripts were observed at 00:00 and 04:00, respectively. The immersion of immature fish in melatonin-containing seawater for 6 h resulted in the upregulation of fshβ and lhβ, as well as downregulation of d2b, in the brain. Additionally, in situ hybridization analysis showed that melatonin treatment lowered the signals of d2b transcripts in the ventral hypothalamus, rostral pars distalis, proximal pars distalis, and pars intermedia, suggesting that melatonin has a negative impact on the levels of d2b transcripts in the hypothalamus and pituitary of immature females; the opposite effect is likely concerning the levels of fshβ and lhβ transcripts in the pituitary. In conclusion, melatonin positively and negatively acted on the hypothalamus and pituitary in the sapphire devil; these opposite effects were related to differences in gonadal development status. The ability to detect and respond to the presence of predation risk is under intense selection, especially for small‐bodied fishes. Damselfishes (Pomacentridae) use auditory vocalizations during inter‐ and intrasexual interactions, but it is not known if they can use vocalizations in the context of predator–prey interactions. Here, we test if yellowtail damselfish, Chrysiptera parasema, can learn to associate the territorial vocalization of heterospecific humbug damselfish Dascyllus aruanus with predation risk. In conditioning trials yellowtail damselfish were presented with the territorial call of humbug damselfish while either blank water (control treatment) or chemical alarm cue derived from damaged skin of conspecific yellowtail damselfish was introduced. In conditioning trials, fish exposed to alarm cue exhibited increased activity and spent more time in the water column relative to fish that received the control treatment. After a single conditioning trial, conditioned fish were exposed again to the territorial call of humbug damselfish. Fish conditioned with the call + alarm cue showed increased activity and spent more time in the water column relative to fish that had been conditioned with the control treatment. These data indicate associative learning of an auditory stimulus with predation risk in a species that regularly uses auditory signalling in other contexts. Recordings of conditioning and test trials failed to detect any acoustic calls produced by test fish in response to the perception of predation risk. While immune responses can be energetically costly, quantifying these costs is challenging. We tested the metabolic costs of immune activation in damselfish (Pomacentrus amboinensis Bleeker, 1868) following a mass-adjusted injection of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) endotoxin. Fish were divided into eight treatments: two controls (handling and saline injection) and six LPS groups with concentrations ranging from 3 to 100 mg kg−1. We used intermittent flow respirometry to measure differences in oxygen uptake (deltaṀO2) 20 h before versus 20 h after LPS injection and changes in metabolic traits (lowest, routine, and peak metabolic rates) as proxies of the aerobic costs of metabolism. Spleen somatic index (SSI) and gene expression in spleens were measured to assess immune activation. We found no difference in metabolic traits or SSI but observed different nonlinear patterns of deltaṀO2 in fish exposed to 50 and 100 mg kg−1 LPS compared to lower doses and controls. Fish exposed to high doses of LPS also had lower residual aerobic scope compared to controls and lower LPS doses. Fish exposed to doses of 3, 50, and 100 mg kg−1 showed altered gene expression compared to the handling control. How species respond to climate change will depend on the collective response of populations. Intraspecific variation in traits, evolved through genetic adaptation and phenotypic plasticity, can cause thermal performance curves to vary over species' distributions. Intraspecific variation within marine species has received relatively little attention due to the belief that marine systems lack dispersal barriers strong enough to promote locally adapted traits. Here we show that intraspecific variation is present between low- and high-latitude populations of a coral reef damselfish (Acanthochromis polyacanthus). Co-gradient variation was observed when examining aerobic physiology across a thermal gradient that reflected mean summer temperatures of high- and low-latitude regions, as well as projected future ocean temperatures (i.e. 27, 28.5, 30, 31.5°C). Whilst thermally sensitive, no significant differences were observed between high- and low-latitude regions when measuring immunocompetence, haematocrit and anaerobic enzyme activity. The presence of co-gradient variation suggests that dispersal limitations in marine systems can promote local adaptive responses; however, intraspecific variation may not be ubiquitous amongst traits. Identifying locally adapted traits amongst populations remains necessary to accurately project species responses to climate change and identify differences in adaptive potential. Restoration is an emerging tool for coral reef conservation, yet despite small‐scale successes there are concerns about high costs and ecological setbacks. Integration between reef ecology and restoration could help address such concerns. A prime example is the use of grazing by herbivores to reduce coral nursery cleaning costs. However, the relation between herbivore communities and cleaning benefits remains unquantified. This study aimed to measure links between herbivorous fish communities, grazing intensity and coral nursery performance. Six reefs were selected in southern Kenya, equally divided across three levels of fisheries management (fished < reserve < no‐take). Fish surveys determined herbivorous fish biomass and composition, and remote underwater videos recorded grazing intensity on coral nurseries. Accumulated fouling and coral growth were measured at the end of the 4‐month study. Grazing intensity was sixfold lower and fouling density fourfold higher in the fished areas compared to protected zones. Higher fouling strongly correlated with lower coral growth: exponential growth constants in fished areas were respectively twice and three times as low compared to marine reserves and no‐take zones. Across study sites grazing was dominated by bristletooth tangs (Ctenochaetus spp.), except where these were outcompeted by territorial damselfish. Thus, better coral nursery performance in protected areas can be partially linked to higher grazing intensity, which in turn is determined by both fish biomass and local species composition. We recommend protecting herbivorous fish species and placing coral nurseries in areas with high biomass of key grazers to improve coral nursery performance and reduce maintenance costs. However, much of our understanding on the thermal sensitivity of reef fish is focused on a few traits (e.g., metabolism, reproduction) and we currently lack knowledge on warming effects on cognition, which may endanger decision-making and survival. Here, we investigated the effects of warming on learning and memory in a damselfish species, Acanthochromis polyacanthus. Fish were held at 28-28.5 °C (control group), 30-30.5 °C (moderate warming group) or 31.5-32 °C (high warming group) for 2 weeks, and then trained to associate a blue tag (cue) to the presence of a conspecific (reward). Following 20 training trials (5 days), fish were tested for associative learning (on the following day) and memory storage (after a 5-days interval). The control group A. polyacanthus showed learning of the task and memory retention after five days, but increasing water temperature impaired learning and memory. A thorough understanding of the effects of heat stress, cognition, and fitness is urgently required because cognition may be a key factor determining animals' performance in the predicted scenario of climate changes. About 11 million marine ornamental fish of ca 1800 non-native species are imported into the USA each year. Selecting species for risk assessment is daunting for such a diverse pathway. Herein, we discuss a focused method for species selection: choosing important taxa related to known invaders in high-volume pathways and narrowing prospective species lists to manageable groups of potential hazards. We provide an example using 11 damselfishes, a family with high volume in trade and one of the species established in USA waters. We used a specialized literature review and a risk screening tool (Aquatic Species Invasiveness Screening Kit) to provide an estimate of risk of invasiveness of marine waters of Florida. The established species was identified as a hazard and potential invasive. All other species scored well below the threshold for invasiveness and future climate had little effect on estimates of invasiveness. The analysis revealed little need for additional risk assessment or prohibitions on damselfishes in trade. Education, monitoring, and early detection and rapid response were the main risk management recommendations. The focused species selection process employed herein provided hazard identification and preliminary risk estimates for just 11 species, but collectively, they represent 40% by volume of fishes imported in the marine ornamental trade. IntroductionThe clownfish - sea anemone mutualism was suggested to have triggered the adaptive radiation of clownfishes, but the origin of clownfish resistance to stinging tentacles of host anemones remains unclear. The presence of specific compounds in the mucus of clownfishes conferring them the unique ability to prevent nematocyst discharge from their hosts has been the most supported hypothesis. Yet the mystery regarding the types of compounds found in clownfish skin mucus remains unsolved.MethodsWe analyzed the chemical composition of clownfish and damselfish mucus using an untargeted metabolomics (HILIC-HRMS) and lipidomics (RPLC-HRMS) approach.Results and DiscussionThe polar and lipid metabolome signatures were highly specific and allowed to discriminate between the clownfish and damselfish clades. The most discriminative part of the signature was the sphingolipid profile, displaying a broader diversity of ceramides present in significantly higher levels in clownfish mucus. Importantly, the inter-specific variability of metabolic signature was significantly higher in clownfishes, although their diversification is evolutionarily more recent, thus implying the impact of symbiosis on metabolic variability and adaptation. Furthermore, specialists and generalists clownfish species displayed distinctive metabolite signature. Two strict clownfish specialists, which are phylogenetically distant but share the same host species, clustered together based on their molecular signature, suggesting a link with their mutualistic nature. Overall, comparative analyses of metabolic signatures highlight differences in chemical composition of clownfish mucus and provide insight into biochemical pathways potentially implicated in clownfish adaptation to inhabit sea anemones and consequently diversify.

Microspathodon dorsalis is a conspicuous territorial species found in rocky reef systems along the Eastern Pacific whose mating system is not fully understood regarding aspects such as nest distribution, egg predation patterns, and overall reproductive-related behavior. Spatially explicit models indicate that individuals and their nests correlated with substrate structure, principally rocks followed by live Pocillopora spp. corals. Nest size was not related to fish size in the center and along the periphery of the nesting colonies, suggesting that female did not choose males based on size. Up to 11,792 interactions (536 ± 2256.97 interactions/nest) at a rate of 5.95 (± 0.47) interactions/minute were recorded, most of which resulted in unsuccessful predation attempts (63%), while the remaining percent (37%) resulted in successful predation attempts. Thalassoma lucasanum fed heavily on M. dorsalis eggs, followed by Stegastes acapulcoensis and Johnrandallia nigrirostris. The frequency, interaction type, and interacting species varied across space and time, probably due to the spatial location of the nests and the distribution patterns of the interacting species, as well as a consequence of the seasonal environmental variation of the area. Object recognition memory is the ability to identify previously seen objects and is an adaptive mechanism that increases survival for many species throughout the animal kingdom. Previously believed to be possessed by only the highest order mammals, it is now becoming clear that fish are also capable of this type of memory formation. Similar to the mammalian hippocampus, the dorsolateral pallium regulates distinct memory processes and is modulated by neurotransmitters such as dopamine. Caribbean bicolour damselfish (Stegastes partitus) live in complex environments dominated by coral reef structures and thus likely possess many types of complex memory abilities including object recognition. This study used a novel object recognition test in which fish were first presented two identical objects, then after a retention interval of 10 min with no objects, the fish were presented with a novel object and one of the objects they had previously encountered in the first trial. We demonstrate that the dopamine D1-receptor agonist (SKF 38393) induces the formation of object recognition memories in these fish. Thus, our results suggest that dopamine-receptor mediated enhancement of spatial memory formation in fish represents an evolutionarily conserved mechanism in vertebrates.

Reef fish may switch feeding strategies due to fluctuations in resource availability or through ontogeny. A number of studies have explored these trophodynamics using carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) stable isotopes, but additional tracers such as sulfur isotopes (δ34S) show strong potential in systems, where δ13C and δ15N results are ambiguous. We tested the utility of adding δ34S to conventional δ13C and δ15N analysis to detect seasonal and body size changes in resource use of two planktivorous damselfish, Dascyllus reticulatus and Dascyllus trimaculatus across the Puerto Galera embayment in the Philippines. We analyzed stable isotope ratios (δ13C, δ15N, and δ34S) in multiple fish tissues (liver, eye, and muscle) to represent different dietary time frames. We then compared fish tissue isotopes against particulate organic matter (POM) (δ13C and δ15N) and POM suspension feeder (the tunicate Polycarpa aurata: δ13C, δ15N, and δ34S) across the same sites. There were size-based and seasonal differences in damselfish resource use, the latter of which was most pronounced in the fast-turnover liver. Small fish (70 mm). This suggests that smaller fish across the embayment employ an opportunistic feeding strategy to take advantage of fluctuating resource availability, while larger fish exhibits more consistent resource use. Isotope ratios of tunicates and POM further confirmed strong seasonality in this system and a lack of a spatial isotopic gradient. δ15N did not seem to contribute to consumer resource use patterns, while by contrast, δ34S fluctuated significantly between sampling periods and was crucial for demonstrating seasonality in resource use. We recommend including δ34S when attempting to disentangle seasonal differences in resource use in aquatic food webs using stable isotopes.

External and internal factors are involved in controlling the growth of fishes. However, little is known about the mechanisms by which external factors trigger stimulus signals. This study explored the physiological roles of melatonin in the transcription of growth-related genes in the brain and liver of Chrysiptera cyanea , a tropical damselfish with long-day preference. In brain samples of this species collected at 4-h intervals, the transcript levels of arylalkylamine N -acetyltransferase2 (aanat2), the rate-limiting enzyme of melatonin synthesis, and growth hormone (gh) peaked at 20:00 and 00:00, respectively. Concomitantly, the transcript levels of insulin-like growth factors (igf1 and igf2) in the brain and liver were upregulated during the scotophase. Levels of iodothyronine deiodinases (dio2 and dio3), enzymes that convert thyroxine (T4) to triiodothyronine (T3) and reverse T3, respectively, increased in the brain (dio2 and dio3) and liver (dio2) during the photophase, whereas dio3 levels in the liver showed the opposite trend. Fish reared in melatonin-containing water exhibited significant increases in the transcription levels of gh and igf1 in the brain and igf1 in the liver, suggesting that growth in this fish is positively regulated by the GH/IGF pathway on a daily basis. Melatonin treatment also stimulated the transcript levels of dio2 and dio3 in the liver, but not in the brain. Fish consuming pellets containing T3, but not T4, showed significant increases in gh and igf1 in the brain and igf1 and igf2 in the liver, suggesting that the intercellular actions of the TH/IGF pathway have an impact on growth on a daily basis. In summary, IGF synthesis and action in the brain and liver undergo dual regulation by distinct hormone networks, which may also be affected by daily, seasonal, or nutritional factors. Territoriality plays a key role in the survival and reproduction of many species. Damselfish (Family: Pomacentridae), reef-dwelling fish found in tropical locations, are territorial and competitively engage both intra- and interspecific fish in order to protect their algal lawns. While damselfish territoriality has been examined as it relates to attack distance in con- and hetero-specifics, aggression in damselfish has not yet been related to fish density and proximity. The Gala'pagos yellowtail damselfish, Stegastes arcifrons, was selected for analysis of the factors that affect its behavioral aggression. Yellowtail damselfish individuals (n=31) were observed in the wild in 5-minute counts for aggressive interactions toward con- and hetero-specifics. The average location of the observed damselfish, including the locations of its nearby neighbors, was noted and dive markers were placed at these locations following the 5-minute count. Photographs of the average locations of the damselfish during the test, as shown by the dive markers, were taken and imaging software was used to determine damselfish density and an approximation of controlled territory through conversion into Voronoi diagrams. Aggression rates toward conspecific encounters, measured in aggressive attacks/minute, were positively correlated with damselfish density and inversely correlated with controlled territory size (p, 0.001 for both correlations, R2 = 0.52 and 0.35 respectively). There were no significant correlations between aggression rates toward heterospecific encounters and any measured variables (p. 0.05 for all correlations). The number of nearby neighbors was also not significantly correlated with aggression (p. 0.05). This research aimed to obtain the The Effect of Addition Probiotic EM4 (Effective microorganism) in Feed on Growth and Survival Rate of the Damselfish with Akuasimber System. The method in this research used a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) of one factor consisting of four levels, the treatment applied was the addition of probiotics with different doses, namely: 0 ml / kg of feed, 10 ml / kg of feed, 15 ml / kg of feed, and 20 ml / kg of feed. The Damselfish used was 3-5 cm. The feed used is a commercial pellet, namely PF-800, given as much as 5% of the body weight of betok fish which is added with probiotics according to the probiotic dose, dissolved with water where the amount of solvent water used is 30% of the total feed weight and molasses 0.1 ml / g, after the mixture is homogeneous, the mixture of probiotic EM4 is put into a sprayer to be evenly sprayed onto the feed, the feed that has been sprayed with probiotics is dried and ready to be given to the test fish. The results of this research showed a probiotic dose of 20 ml / kg of feed of specific growth of 2.68%, absolute weight of 3.32 grams, absolute length of 2.07 cm, feed efficiency of 60.73%, feed conversion of 1.64., blood glucose 98.34 mg / dL, and survival rate of 100%. Remotely operated vehicle (ROV) surveys were conducted at reef sites in the northern Gulf of Mexico (nGOM) during 2018–2019. Artificial (AR = 63) and natural (NR = 139) reefs were located in a 2 × 105 km2 area south of Mobile, AL to Destin, FL at depths of 13–75 m. We observed a total of 5371 damselfishes (Family: Pomacentridae) belonging to eight taxa. The non-native regal demoiselle (regal), Neopomacentrus cyanomos, was present at 30.2% of ARs but only 1.4% of NRs with densities ranging from 0.19 to 18.11 fish per 100 m2. Regals were most dense at shallow ARs, comprising 53% of the damselfish community, and least dense at deeper reefs comprising < 1% of observed damselfishes. Results from generalized linear mixed models (GLMMs) indicated the interaction among reef type, complexity, relief, and depth had a significant effect on regal density but that reef type (36%) and the interaction between reef type and depth (25%) explained the greatest proportions of variance in the data (partial η2) while the interaction among all four main effects explained only a small amount (2%). Our data indicate regals prefer shallow artificial structures with low complexity but can occupy deeper reefs, including NRs, despite less-favorable conditions. Our data document the persistence of regals in the nGOM and identify habitat factors that are significantly related to their presence and density in the region. The extent to which marine populations are connected by dispersing larvae and the ramifications of this connectivity for population dynamics was investigated for the temperate damselfish, Hypsypops rubicundus, in San Diego County, USA. Surveys identified six source populations for this species: Carlsbad, Cardiff, Torrey Pines, La Jolla, Mission Point, and Zuniga Point. Three of these reefs are within or adjacent to existing marine protected areas. Trace elemental fingerprinting was used to quantify the connectivity of populations in 2008-2009. High-resolution sampling over a protracted spawning season revealed that elemental fingerprints of reefs earlier in the spawning season became indistinguishable from other reefs later in the spawning season, resulting in inaccurate assignment of natal origin of post-dispersal fish. When natal origins of fish were assessed using appropriately binned data, one reef, La Jolla, emerged as the predominant source population, supplying itself and three other reefs with recruits. The northernmost reef, Cardiff was a “pure” sink, in that it unilaterally imported fish. Dispersal trajectories predominantly were in a northerly direction, but sporadic southerly dispersal was documented, corresponding to empirically measured current reversals. On intra-annual time scales this network of reefs resembles a source-sink metapopulation, but over annual time scales it functions as an open metapopulation with a well-mixed larval pool. To assess the demographic significance of observed connectivity patterns, empirically parameterized, stage-based matrix models were coupled with connectivity matrices. Elasticity analyses suggest inter-reef connectivity acts primarily to regulate which vital rates are demographically most significant; at low levels of connectivity adult survivorship has the greatest influence on population growth rate; at high levels of connectivity, juvenile growth is most influential. Quantitative metrics of sources and sinks were developed and node deletion experiments conducted to better characterize reef connectivity within the metapopulation. La Jolla was identified as the most valuable reef within the metapopulation in terms of connectivity; it may regulate how populations of fish at other reefs persist over time, and as such should be a conservation priority. New knowledge of the magnitude, directionality and variability of connectivity, and its roles in regulating local and metapopulation dynamics will aid local marine conservation efforts.

This study evaluated the effects of food availability on the transcript levels of genes related to reproduction and growth in the sapphire devil (Chrysiptera cyanea), a tropical damselfish. Nonbreeding fish were reared at high‐food (HF) and low‐food (LF) levels for 4 weeks under long‐days. Vitellogenic oocytes could be observed in the ovaries of the HF group. The quantitative polymerase chain reaction analysis revealed that lhβ and cyp19b in the brains, vtg and igf1 in the livers and cyp19a in the ovaries of HF fish were significantly higher than that of LF fish, suggesting that estradiol‐17β (E2) synthesis in the ovary and brain is activated when suitable permissive factors are available to fish. Food limitation lowered hepatic igf1 and dio2, suggesting that the TH‐IGF1 signaling system functions in the liver, and that food availability altered hepatic deiodination activities related to intercellular levels of thyroid hormones. Hepatic dio2 significantly decreased when fish were immersed for 3 days in E2‐containing seawater; this suggests that E2 impedes the conversion of T4 to T3 in the liver. Our study shows that igf1 was upregulated in accordance with HF‐induced vitellogenesis but downregulated by E2 treatment, suggesting that igf1 is bidirectional and altered by maturational status. Once vitellogenesis begins under a suitable range of proximal factors, fish need to maintain their nutritional status because food availability is a permissive factor for their reproduction. Many predators reported to feed on crown-of-thorns starfish (CoTS, Acanthaster spp.) are generalist and opportunistic feeders. However, research into predation on CoTS tends to examine these predator–prey interactions in isolation, and it remains unknown whether many potential predators will prey on CoTS when other, potentially more palatable, food sources are available. Assessing predatory responses to changes in prey availability is critical for gauging the capacity of predators to regulate prey populations. Here, we explored prey preferences and tested for prey switching across nine species of planktivorous damselfish offered varying densities of Pacific CoTS (Acanthaster cf. solaris) larvae versus larvae of a common and co-occurring starfish, Linckia laevigata. Results show that planktivorous damselfishes will consume crown-of-thorns starfish larvae, even in the presence of alternative prey. Feeding responses varied among the nine planktivorous predators with five damselfishes (Acanthochromis polyacanthus, Amblyglyphidodon curacao, Dascyllus reticulatus, Pomacentrus amboinensis and Pomacentrus moluccensis) exhibiting increased consumption of Acanthaster larvae with increasing density, despite the presence of alternative prey. Moreover, Abudefduf sexfasciatus and P. amboinensis exhibited preference for larvae of A. cf. solaris over larvae of L. laevigata. Despite these predation patterns, prey switching between starfish larvae was not observed. These results add to a growing body of evidence which suggests that predators of the early life stages of A. cf. solaris could be important in regulating settlement and recruitment patterns of this starfish, especially at low, non-outbreak, densities. The sapphire devil (Chrysiptera cyanea) is a tropical damselfish that undergoes active reproduction under long-day conditions. To elucidate the physiological regulation of the brain–pituitary–gonadal axis in female sapphire devil, we cloned and characterized the genes of two kisspeptins (kiss1 and kiss2), three gonadotropin-releasing hormones (gnrh1, gnrh2, gnrh3), and the β-subunit of two gonadotropins (fshβ and lhβ) and investigated the gene expression changes during ovarian development. Quantitative polymerase chain reaction analyses in various brain parts revealed high expression levels of kiss1, kiss2, and gnrh2 in the diencephalon; gnrh2 and gnrh3 in the telencephalon; and fshβ and lhβ in the pituitary. In situ hybridization (ISH) analyses revealed positive signals of kiss1 in the dorsal and ventral habenular nucleus and of kiss2 in the dorsal and ventral parts of the nucleus of the lateral recess. This analysis showed gnrh1 expression in the preoptic area (POA), suggesting that GnRH1 plays a stimulating role in the secretion of gonadotropins from the pituitary of the sapphire devil. High transcription levels of kiss1, kiss2, gnrh1, gnrh2, fshβ, and lhβ were observed in the brain during the late vitellogenic stage, suggesting their involvement in the physiological processes of vitellogenesis. Immersion of fish in estradiol-17β (E2)-containing seawater resulted in increased expression of kiss2 and gnrh1 in their brains. This study showed that kiss-expressing neurons in the diencephalon are influenced by E2, leading to upregulation of gnrh1 in the POA and of fshβ and lhβ in the pituitary during vitellogenesis. Fresh submarine groundwater discharge (fresh SGD), the efflux of terrestrial groundwater directly into the ocean, is a ubiquitous pathway for nutrient-rich freshwater to coastal ecosystems, altering their hydrography, hydrochemistry, and primary productivity. Yet only little is known about the effects of fresh SGD on the fitness of higher trophic levels such as teleost fish. Otolith analysis revealed that somatic growth rates were significantly higher and settlement to reef habitat took place significantly earlier in juvenile gray demoiselle Chrysiptera glauca exposed to fresh SGD as compared to strictly marine conditions. Contrary to expectations, feeding conditions were comparable in both habitats. We propose that physiologically beneficial environmental conditions brought about by the submarine influx of cold acidic freshwater enabled juvenile fish to exhibit elevated growth rates, thereby increasing their survival potential. This effect would directly link changes in groundwater on land to variations in marine primary and secondary consumer biomass at the coast.

The structures, functions, and services provided by coral reef ecosystems are deteriorating worldwide. However, not all coral reefs are affected the same way, with some showing signs of resistance and/or recovery from disturbances. Understanding the drivers and feedbacks that contribute to shifts in community structure is valuable to support resilience-based management. In this study, key community variables that influence the resilience of coral reef ecosystems were examined in 64 sites of the Mesoamerican Reef (MAR) monitored in both 2006 and 2016, as part of the Healthy Reef Initiative (HRI), using the Atlantic and Gulf Rapid Reef Assessment (AGRRA) monitoring protocol. Based on benthic cover thresholds, sites were classified into three different states: coral state (CS) with >10% live coral and 10% live coral and >5% fleshy macroalgae and; depauperate coral state (DCS)

The evolution of parental care opens the door for the evolution of brood parasitic strategies that allow individuals to gain the benefits of parental care without paying the costs. Here we provide the first documentation for alloparental care in coral reef fish and we discuss why these patterns may reflect conspecific and interspecific brood parasitism. Species‐specific barcodes revealed the existence of low levels (3.5% of all offspring) of mixed interspecific broods, mostly juvenile Amblyglyphidodon batunai and Pomacentrus smithi damselfish in Altrichthys broods. A separate analysis of conspecific parentage based on microsatellite markers revealed that mixed parentage broods are common in both species, and the genetic patterns are consistent with two different modes of conspecific brood parasitism, although further studies are required to determine the specific mechanisms responsible for these mixed parentage broods. While many broods had offspring from multiple parasites, in many cases a given brood contained only a single foreign offspring, perhaps a consequence of the movement of lone juveniles between nests. In other cases, broods contained large numbers of putative parasitic offspring from the same parents and we propose that these are more likely to be cases where parasitic adults laid a large number of eggs in the host nest than the result of movements of large numbers of offspring from a single brood after hatching. The evidence that these genetic patterns reflect adaptive brood parasitism, as well as possible costs and benefits of parasitism to hosts and parasites, are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Embryonic development and larval morphology of Chromis crusma was described from five nests sampled between 21 and 25 m depth in central Chile (33°S). From each nest, a set of c. 100 randomly selected eggs were hand‐collected and transported in seawater to the laboratory. Subsets of c. 30 eggs per nest were maintained in 50 ml glass containers at a constant ambient temperature of c. 12°C (range 11.5–12.9°C). Egg length (L) and width (W) and larval notochordal length (LN) were measured from photographs. Geometric morphometric analyses were performed in newly hatched and 1 week old larvae to quantify shape changes. Ellipsoid eggs had an average (mean ± SE) size of 1.12 ± 0.05 mm L and 0.67 ± 0.02 mm W, with volume being similar throughout 15 developmental stages (i.e., ellipsoid‐shaped; 0.27 mm3). Planktonic larvae hatched between 5 and 11 days at 12°C and had a mean LN of 3.13 ± 0.25 mm, a yolk sack volume of 0.03 mm3 and an oil droplet volume of 0.005 mm3. Morphological traits at hatching included: (a) lack of paired fins and jaws; (b) single medial fin fold; (c) lack of eye pigmentation; (d) yolk sac present near anterior tip; (e) melanophores distributed along ventral surface with one pair over the forehead. In order to generate an up‐to‐date summary of developmental traits within Pomacentridae, we reviewed literature on egg development (e.g., shape and number of oil droplets), hatching and larval traits (e.g., morphology, pigmentation patterns). Thirty‐two publications accounting for 35 species were selected, where eggs, embryonic development, hatching and larval traits were found for 26, 21, 24 and 34 species, respectively. In order to evaluate potential phylogenetic and environmental relationships within the early stages of Pomacentridae, cluster analyses (Bray Curtis similarity, group average) were also performed on egg and larval traits of 22 species divided by subfamily (Stegastinae, Chrominae, Abudefdufinae, Pomacentrinae) and thermal ranges (i.e., low: 16.5°C (range: 12–21°C), medium: 24.5°C (range:21–28°C) and high: 27°C (range: 26–28°C)), suggesting that early developmental patterns can be segregated by both temperature and phylogenetic relationships. Three new species of Chromis (Perciformes, Pomacentridae) from the Philippines, collected between 75-150 m depth, are described by a combination of morphological features and their coloration. Chromis gunting sp. n. was found in Batangas and Oriental Mindoro, and differs from its congeners in body depth (2.1-2.2 in SL), and color of adults, light brown, with a silver area on the anterior end and a bilateral black margin along the exterior side of the tail. It is most similar to C. scotochiloptera, with a 5.3% genetic divergence in COI. Chromis hangganan sp. n. was found around Lubang Island. Body depth (1.9-2.0 in SL) and adult coloration (yellowish with dark black outer margins on dorsal and anal fins) also separate this species from its congeners. It is most similar to C. pembae, with a 2.5% genetic divergence. Chromis bowesi sp. n. was found in Batangas, and also differs from its congeners by the combination of body depth (1.5-1.6 in SL), and color of adults (brownish grey in the dorsal side to whitish on the ventral side, with alternating dark and light stripes in the sides of body). Abstract Coral reefs are highly productive ecosystems that typically exist in nutrient-poor waters, stimulating considerable research on the sources of nutrients that may support this productivity, including nutrient recycling. We examined the potential for resident herbivorous damselfish (Stegastes nigricans) to recycle nutrients within their territories by conducting an exclusion experiment on S. nigricans territories and measuring algal turf growth on shallow fringing reefs in Mo'orea, French Polynesia. A nutrient bioassay was used to evaluate whether the enhanced growth was due to increased nutrients. We chose 15 isolated damselfish territories for a caging experiment, with a large cage obstructing all fish access on one half of the territory (−Damselfish, −Herbivory) and a small low-profile cage allowing access but not herbivory to a portion on the other half (+Damselfish −Herbivory). Additionally, we measured turf in a randomly-chosen uncaged area within each territory where both damselfish and herbivory were present (+Damselfish +Herbivory). Behavioral observations confirmed damselfish rarely swam over the large-caged half of the territory, effectively eliminating their physical presence, but continued to interact with the other half. Over the 16-day experiment, time and treatment had a significant effect on turf growth. By day 16, the turf receiving the +Damselfish −Herbivory treatment experienced average net turf growth of 5.34 mm, which was significantly greater than turf growth within the territories receiving the −Damselfish −Herbivory (2.13 mm) and the +Damselfish +Herbivory (1.50 mm) treatments. The macroalgae in the nutrient bioassay grew 21% more on the side of the territory where damselfish were present compared to the side where they were excluded, supporting our conclusion that the mechanism that supported faster turf growth was increased nutrients. Thus, our study was the first to establish experimentally that the presence of damselfish increased algal growth by enhancing nutrient supplies via recycled waste products, a mechanism that has been advanced but never tested. Surveys established that damselfish territories covered 28–64% of the fringing reef flat along the north shore of Mo'orea, suggesting this increased productivity within territories could be a significant contribution to total reef productivity. These findings highlight the importance of continuing research into the long-term and spatial-scale effects of damselfish as nutrient recyclers on coral reefs. Stable between‐group differences in collective behavior have been documented in a variety of social taxa. Here we evaluate the effects of such variation, often termed collective or colony‐level personality, on coral recovery in a tropical marine farmerfish system. Groups of the farmerfish Stegastes nigricans cultivate and defend gardens of palatable algae on coral reefs in the Indo‐Pacific. These gardens can promote the recruitment, growth, and survival of corals by providing a refuge from coral predation. Here we experimentally evaluate whether the collective response of farmerfish colonies is correlated across intruder feeding guilds – herbivores, corallivores and egg‐eating predators. Further, we evaluate if overall colony responsiveness or situation‐specific responsiveness (i.e. towards herbivores, corallivores, or egg‐eaters in particular) best predicts the growth of outplanted corals. Finally, we experimentally manipulated communities within S. nigricans gardens, adding either macroalgae or large colonies of coral, to assess if farmerfish behavior changes in response to the communities they occupy. Between‐group differences in collective responsiveness were repeatable across intruder guilds. Despite this consistency, responsiveness towards corallivores (porcupinefish and ornate butterflyfish) was a better predictor of outplanted coral growth than responsiveness towards herbivores or egg‐eaters. Adding large corals to farmerfish gardens increased farmerfish attacks towards intruders, pointing to possible positive feedback loops between their aggression towards intruders and the presence of corals whose growth they facilitate. The fear of predation can have marked effects on an individual's phenotype, and the resulting phenotype is selected to increase an individual's chance of survival during a predator encounter. However, for species with inducible defences, such defensive phenotypes must be costly enough to prevent them from becoming constitutive. While morphological and life-history adaptations have been shown to incur costs, much less research has been done on the costs of behavioural adaptations, which are often thought of as plastic, with limited associated costs. In this study, we document the costs of a high-risk behavioural phenotype. Under high-risk conditions, damselfish are known to exhibit a high-risk phenotype, which among other traits, confer a significant survival advantage during encounters with predators. We exposed juvenile damselfish to a high-risk or low-risk environment for 4 days. We then set up competitive encounters between size-matched pairs of high-risk and low-risk conspecifics. To test for context dependency, we also ran trials when the pair was exposed to a novel predator odour during the competitive encounter. Our results indicate that low-risk fish were the superior competitors in a low-risk environment, but not in a high-risk environment. This result may be explained by an increase in motivation by high-risk individuals to seek shelter from a potential predation threat. Our results highlight (1) the existence of significant costs, even for rapidly induced behavioural phenotypes, and (2) the importance of investigating the adaptive value of phenotypes within the context in which they develop. Abstract Record-breaking temperatures between 2015 and 2016 led to unprecedented pan-tropical bleaching of scleractinian corals. On the Great Barrier Reef (GBR), the effects were most pronounced in the remote, northern region, where over 90% of reefs exhibited bleaching. Mass bleaching that results in widespread coral mortality represents a major disturbance event for reef organisms, including reef fishes. Using 133 replicate 1 m2 quadrats, we quantified short-term changes in coral communities and spatially associated reef fish assemblages, at Lizard Island, Australia, in response to the 2016 mass bleaching event. Quadrats were spatially matched, permitting repeated sampling of fish and corals in the same areas: before, during and 6 months after mass bleaching. As expected, we documented a significant decrease in live coral cover. Subsequent decreases in fish abundance were primarily driven by coral-associated damselfishes. However, these losses, were relatively minor (37% decrease), especially compared to the magnitude of Acropora loss (>95% relative decrease). Furthermore, at a local, 1 m2 scale, we documented a strong spatial mismatch between fish and coral loss. Post-bleaching fish losses were not highest in quadrats that experienced the greatest loss of live coral. Nor were fish losses associated with a proliferation of cyanobacteria. Several sites did, however, exhibit increases in fish abundance suggesting substantial spatial movements. These results challenge common assumptions and emphasize the need for caution when ascribing causality to observed patterns of fish loss at larger spatial scales. Our results highlight the potential for short-term resilience to climate change, in fishes, through local migration and habitat plasticity. Steps taken for broodstock development of Neopomacentrus nemurus, Coral demoiselle (Bleeker, 1857) in a hatchery, its spawning and development of egg to the juvenile stage are described. Among the three treatments tried, only the trial using Parvocalanus crassirostris nauplii as the first diet helped in the development of larvae. Larval and post‐larval growth was studied for a period of 65 days post hatch. The larva measured 2–2.4 mm in total length at the time of hatching. The mouth size of larva at the time of hatching measured 237.92 µm. By the 5th day, the width of the larval body had significantly increased. All the fins were conjoined, except for the caudal fin which had begun its appearance on the 2nd day itself. The digestive system was functional by the 5th day and the copepod remains were seen in the digestive tract. The larva metamorphosed by the 15th day with fully developed fins and fin rays. On the 20th day, the larval body had begun to display signs of fin pigmentation. The larva assumed adult pigmentation by the 35th day. To date, more than 81 species of tropical coral reef fish have been reported to hybridize in nature, spanning multiple families, including the Chaetodontidae, Pomacanthidae, and Labridae. Hybridization, however, is seemingly rare among benthic nesting species that engage in pair spawning, such as the Pomacentridae. Here, we present evidence for the first molecularly confirmed record of hybridization within the genus Dascyllus; D. aruanus and D. reticulatus. Interestingly, although many hybridization events are attributed to peripheral range effects or areas of limited overlap among otherwise allopatric species, this hybrid individual was collected from the northern Great Barrier Reef, centrally located within the distribution ranges of both species. The hybrid exhibited coloration and meristic counts intermediate between D. aruanus and D. reticulatus. Diagnostic genetic markers and subsequent microsatellites analysis confirmed that this individual was a hybrid offspring of D. aruanus and D. reticulatus, with the latter providing the maternal contribution. The occurrence of the D. aruanus × D. reticulatus hybrid on the Great Barrier Reef represents an exception to the otherwise species-specific haplotypes. The nuclear diagnostic marker which was identified during this study could serve as a hybrid indicator and benefit future hybrid investigations for hybridization between these two species. Fast-start escape responses are critical behaviours used by fishes during predator-prey encounters and some interactions with hetero- and conspecifics. In experimental studies, escape responses are often measured once per individual and considered representative of maximum performance. However, few studies have compared variability and repeatability in escape performances within and among individuals. Using the tropical damselfish Amblyglyphidodon curacao, we quantified inter- and intra-individual variation in behavioural and kinematic components of escape performance during repeated presentations of a stimulus at 15 min intervals. Individual maximum escape performance was repeatable through time, but there was considerable variation in the magnitude of responses both among and within fish. We found no evidence of habituation or fatigue due to repeated stimulations, suggesting that fish can be stimulated multiple times to ensure that an accurate estimate of maximum escape performance is obtained.

Abstract Food availability can become a factor driving the reproductive activity of tropical fish, particularly when primary production within their habitats fluctuates with tropical monsoons. The present study examined the involvement of insulin-like growth factors (IGF) in controlling the reproduction of the sapphire devil Chrysiptera cyanea , a reef-associated damselfish that is capable of manipulating its reproductive activity based on food availability. We cloned and characterized the cDNAs of igf1 and igf2 and determined their transcript levels in relation to seasonal and food-manipulated reproduction. The partial cDNAs of sapphire devil igf1 and igf2 had open reading frames (ORFs) composed of 600 bp (155 amino acid residue) and 636 bp (211 aa), respectively. Phylogenetic analyses revealed that IGF1 and IGF2 of the sapphire devil were clustered into those of teleosts. The gonadosomatic index increased from March to June. Vitellogenic oocytes and ovulatory follicles were observed in ovaries from May to June, which suggests that the spawning season lasts for at least 2 months. The hepatosomatic index, but not the condition factor, increased in March and June. The transcript levels of igf1 in the brain, but not in the liver, increased in April, June (vitellogenesis) and July (post vitellogenesis). Ovarian activity during the spawning season was maintained by high food supply (HH) for 30 days, although it was suppressed in the food-restriction treatment (LL) and restored in the re-feeding treatment (LH). The transcript levels of igf s in the brain, but not in the liver, in LH were lower than those in HH and LL. Moreover, immersing fish in seawater containing estradiol-17β suppressed transcript levels of igf s in the liver, but not in the brain. We conclude that reproductive activity during the spawning season is influenced by nutritive conditions and that crosstalk exists between the reproductive and growth network in the neural and peripheral tissues, thus controlling the reproductive activity of this species. Abstract: Climate change is expected to pose a significant risk to species that exhibit strong behavioural preferences for specific habitat types, with generalist species assumed to be less vulnerable. In this study, we conducted habitat choice experiments to determine how water temperature influences habitat preference for three common species of coral reef damselfish (Pomacentridae) that differ in their levels of habitat specialisation. The lemon damselfish Pomacentrus moluccensis, a habitat specialist, consistently selected complex coral habitat across all temperature treatments (selected based on local average seasonal temperatures naturally experienced in situ: ambient winter 22°C; ambient summer 28°C; and elevated 31°C). Unexpectedly, the neon damselfish Pomacentrus coelestis and scissortail sergeant Abudefduf sexfasciatus, both of which have more generalist habitat associations, developed strong habitat preferences (for complex coral and boulder habitat, respectively) at the elevated temperature treatment (31°C) compared to no single preferred habitat at 22°C or 28°C. The observed shifts in habitat preference with temperature suggest that we may be currently underestimating the vulnerability of some habitat generalists to climate change and highlight that the ongoing loss of complex live coral through coral bleaching could further exacerbate resource overlap and species competition in ways not currently considered in climate change models. The vicariance model of biogeography focuses on allopatric speciation through fragmentation from an ancestral biota via a barrier that interrupts gene flow between populations. The evolutionary processes that occur over time in sister species on each side of the vicariance event influence their traits by a compromise between divergence and conservatism. The eastern Pacific and the Caribbean Sea were separated by the Isthmus of Panama ~ 3-6 Mya and allopatric speciation occurred on either side of the isthmus. Differences in ecological conditions on each side of the Isthmus of Panama separating the sister species may have shaped their niches and morphologies over evolutionary time. The objectives of this study were to: (1) analyze the variation in niche, morphology, and size in each pair of sister damselfish species on both sides of the Isthmus of Panama, (2) determine whether these variables show specific patterns on each side of the isthmus, and (3) determine whether these variables are correlated through evolution. The results showed no relationship between morphology and niche, however, size was related to both niche and morphology. Sister damselfish species on either side of the Isthmus of Panama differ in terms of niche, morphology, and size. Nevertheless, they also show similarities, indicating environmental constraints and conservatism. This study describes a model in which adaptation or divergence and conservatism shaped the evolution of sister damselfish species on both sides of the Isthmus of Panama. A taxonomic review of the Chromis xanthura species group, defined here as having 13 dorsal-fin spines, three upper and three lower procurrent caudal-fin rays, two black bands at the preopercular and opercular margins, and a yellow caudal fin when juvenile, resulted in the recognition of three species, Chromis xanthura (Bleeker 1854), Chromis opercularis (Günther 1867), and Chromis anadema sp. nov. Chromis xanthura and C. opercularis, the Pacific and Indian Ocean paired sister species, respectively, are redescribed, with confirmation of two color types of C. xanthura (having a white or black caudal peduncle and fin) as a single species on the basis of morphological and molecular analyses. Chromis anadema sp. nov., described from the oceanic islands of the Pacific Ocean on the basis of 21 specimens, is characterized by having 28-33 gill rakers; longest dorsal-fin soft ray length 20.0-24.7% of standard length (SL); first anal-fin spine length 5.0-6.1% of SL; caudal-fin length 33.4-43.8% of SL; posterior tips of caudal-fin lobes not filamentous in adults; broad black bands along preopercular and opercular margins, sum width of two bands 28.9-38.7% of head length; distal half of soft-rayed portion of dorsal fin transparent in adults; triangular black blotches at upper and lower caudal-fin base in adults; caudal peduncle and fin bluish black in adults; and body grayish, and all fins (except for pectoral fin) bright yellow in juveniles. The popular aquarium fish called damselfish are valuable because of their commercial and ecological value. As the demand for these fishes is increasing, their estimation techniques carry great significance. Most conventional techniques for biomass estimation are visual sampling techniques, raft and floating radio frequency identification (RFID) tag systems, minnow traps, removal method of population estimation, etc., which are complex and require human interaction. Moreover, the instruments and devices used in these techniques are costly. With the aim of overcoming these difficulties, a cross-correlation based signal processing approach is presented in this research in order to estimate damselfish biomass in the sea. The estimation process is based on the production of an acoustic signal (called "chirp signal") of these fish species during swimming within their territory. To evaluate the performance of the estimation, three different distributions of damselfish are considered in this paper. Predation is a key ecosystem function, especially in high diversity systems such as coral reefs. Not only is predation one of the strongest top-down controls of prey population density, but it also is a strong driver of prey behaviour and function through non-lethal effects. We ask whether predation risk influences sheltering behaviour of damselfish living in mutualism with branching corals. Host corals gain multiple advantages from the mutualistic relationship which are determined by the strength of damselfish sheltering. Distance travelled by the Lemon Damselfish Pomacentrus moluccensis away from their host colony was measured here as a proxy for sheltering strength and was expected to be shortest under highest predation risk. Predation risk, defined as a function of predator abundance and activity, turbidity and habitat complexity, was quantified at four reef slope sites in Kepulauan Seribu, Indonesia. Damselfish sheltering strength was measured using stationary unmanned video cameras. Small damselfish (< 2 cm) increased their sheltering strength under high turbidity. Predator feeding activity, but not abundance, influenced damselfish sheltering strength. Contrary to our expectations, sheltering behaviour of adult damselfish decreased under high predator activity. While these observations are in line with risk-averse behaviour by juvenile P. moluccensis, they may indicate the presence of sentinel behaviour in the adults of this species. Habitat complexity seemed to be less important as a driver of damselfish behaviour. These counterintuitive results may indicate complex social behaviour and age-specific strategies for predator avoidance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The damselfish Chromis chromis is typically the most abundant fish species in the rocky littoral environment of the Mediterranean Sea, where it feeds in huge shoals on incoming zooplankton and rests near the seabed each night. Research has shown that large populations of C. chromis play a fundamental role by transferring carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus directly from the pelagic system to the littoral in the form of solid and liquid wastes and therefore that this species acts as a vital conduit for nutrients. In addition, C. chromis represents a major prey item for predatory fish and seabirds, it has been shown to exert significant predation pressure on coastal zooplankton populations, but it is also a major consumer of fish eggs and hence may have a strong influence on the dynamics of other fish species. In this review paper the contention is that C. chromis represents a key species in the Mediterranean Sea rocky littoral. This view is supported by quantitative evidence that has been amassed over a number of years, but is collated here for the first time. Chromis chromis is of only minor importance to commercial fisheries (it is usually discarded), but trends in population abundance of this species can be indicative of levels of fishing pressure on other commercial species. It has been demonstrated that where predator numbers are able to recover from intensive fishing (e.g.in marine protected areas; MPAs), this is often mirrored by lower densities of C. chromis. Several papers have championed C. chromis as a possible indicator species for human disturbance. As well as being directly and indirectly affected by fishing, the species is also sensitive to a number of other anthropogenic pressures, most notably poor water quality and noise pollution.
