Conserving the remaining savanna ecosystems in the Brazilian savanna (Cerrado) — a global biodiversity hotspot that stores carbon and provides water to a large portion of South America — requires understanding the ecological processes maintaining their function. Nutrient cycling supports savanna function via plant litter production and decomposition by soil fauna, releasing nutrients for plant and soil organism uptake. Soil biodiversity and biogeochemistry linkages with litter dynamics in Neotropical savannas under a changing climate are poorly understood. Here, we combined two years of rainfall seasonality, leaf and wood litter production and decomposition with soil epigeic fauna abundance — the number of ground-surface dwelling invertebrates collected through pitfall traps — taxa richness, Shannon's diversity and Pielou's evenness, and 16 soil biogeochemical variables measured in 12 plots of preserved savanna. Rainfall seasonality modulated the mean soil epigeic fauna diversity and evenness across all plots, which were highest in the rainy season, in contrast to litterfall rates, which peaked in the dry season. In the dry season (April to September), the Formicidae family was the most abundant with 50% of all individuals, while in the rainy season (October to March), the Isoptera order was the most abundant with approximately 39% of individuals. Wood litter decomposition grouped with annual Hemiptera abundance, co-varying with soil epigeic fauna diversity and evenness per plot and against soil fertility variables. Leaf litter decomposition co-varied with the total epigeic fauna abundance and soil pH. We speculate that the specific need to decompose wood litter may be associated with a greater need for diversity than an abundance of soil epigeic fauna. Our work highlights the role of rainfall seasonality on soil biodiversity and physicochemistry, which is also tightly linked with litter production and decomposition. This study advances our understanding of the mechanisms governing nutrient cycling in savanna ecosystems on nutrient-impoverished soils, with implications for achieving sustainable conservation and restoration goals.

Purpose: Hydrocephalus is a brain disease prevalent in the pediatric population that presents complex pathophysiology and multiple etiologies. The best treatment is still ventricular shunting. Mechanical obstruction is the most frequent complication, but the resulting pathological effects are still unknown., Objective: Evaluation and comparison of clinical, histopathological, and immunohistochemical aspects in the acute phase of experimental hydrocephalus induced by kaolin, after treatment with adapted shunt, and after shunt obstruction and posterior disobstruction., Methods: Wistar rats aged 7 days were used and divided into 4 groups: control group without kaolin injection (n = 6), untreated hydrocephalic group (n = 5), hydrocephalic group treated with ventriculosubcutaneous shunt (DVSC) (n = 7), and hydrocephalic group treated with shunt, posteriorly obstructed and disobstructed (n = 5). The animals were submitted to memory and spatial learning evaluation through the Morris water maze test. The rats were sacrificed at 28 days of age and histological analysis of the brains was performed with luxol fast blue, in addition to immunohistochemical analysis in order to evaluate reactive astrocytosis, inflammation, neuronal labeling, and apoptotic activity., Results: The group with shunt obstruction had worse performance in memory tests. Reactive astrocytosis was more evident in this group, as was the inflammatory response., Conclusions: Obstruction of the shunt results in impaired performance of behavioral tests and causes irreversible histopathological changes when compared to findings in the group with treated hydrocephalus, even after unblocking the system. A biodegradable polymer packaging system for 'Benitaka' table grapes ( Vitis vinifera L.) was developed to inhibit the development of gray mold during refrigerated storage. The system consisted of packages and sachets containing Na 2 S 2 O 5 to release sulfur dioxide (SO 2 ), both produced with biodegradable films of starch, glycerol, and poly (adipate co-butylene terephthalate) (PBAT) produced via blown extrusion. The films were characterized in terms of thickness, density, mass loss in water, water vapor permeability, sorption isotherms, and mechanical properties. The table grapes were packed with biodegradable plastic bags containing SO 2 -releasing sachets inside. The experimental design was completely randomized, with four repetitions and five treatments: (a) control, without sachet containing Na 2 S 2 O 5 and SiO 2 ; (b) 2 g of Na 2 S 2 O 5 + 2 g of SiO 2 ; (c) 4 g of Na 2 S 2 O 5 + 1 g of SiO 2 ; (d) 4 g of Na 2 S 2 O 5 + 2 g of SiO 2 ; and (e) 4 g of Na 2 S 2 O 5 + 4 g of SiO 2 . The bunches were stored in a refrigerated chamber at 1 ± 1 °C and relative humidity above 90%. The treatments were evaluated 30 and 45 days after the beginning of refrigerated storage and 3 days at room temperature. The grapes were evaluated based on the incidence of gray mold, mass loss, stem browning, shattered berries, and berry bleaching. The data were subjected to the analysis of variance, and the means were compared using Tukey's test at 5%. The biodegradable films had good processability during the production via blown extrusion, with good physical properties to be used in the packaging of grapes and the production of SO 2 -releasing sachets. The biodegradable polymer packaging system (biodegradable plastic bags + SO 2 -releasing sachets) inhibited the development of gray mold on 'Benitaka' table grapes for 45 days at 1 °C, preserving their quality, with low mass loss, few shattered berries, and rachis freshness.

Tick abnormalities have been unusual in nature, and they can be divided into local and general. In the present study, external morphological anomalies were described in 31 individual adult ticks of 15 different species of Ixodidae, which were collected on wild hosts (20 ticks), domestic hosts (7 ticks), and in the environment (4 ticks) in 11 states of Brazil from 1998 to 2022. Among the 31 tick specimens, 14 (45%) were categorized as local anomalies, and 17 (55%) as general anomalies. The ticks were taxonomically identified into 14 species of Amblyomma, and one species of Rhipicephalus. Local anomalies included malformations of scutum/alloscutum, ectromely, leg atrophy, and a third ectopic spiracular plate. General anomalies included opisthosoma duplication, no expansion of dorsal alloscutum in engorged females, and gynandromorphism; the latter is described for 13 tick specimens. Morphological anomalies in Amblyomma aureolatum, Amblyomma brasiliense, Amblyomma humerale and Amblyomma longirostre are reported for the first time. Objective: Describe the epidemiological profile and social-economic burden that hydrocephalus patients represent to the national public health system, using data available at the online database of the Brazilian Health Ministry (DataSUS)., Methods: This is a populational study based on descriptive statistics of all clinical and surgical appointments included in the DataSUS database. Data included herein were collected between 2015 and 2021 and subdivided into three main groups, related to hydrocephalus incidence and mortality, hospitalizations, and financial costs., Results: In the study period, 3993 new cases of congenital hydrocephalus were diagnosed, with 6051 deaths overall. The mortality rate in the country was 1.5/100000 live births and the prevalence was 0.374/100000 inhabitants. The number of hospitalizations resulting from treatment procedures and complications of hydrocephalus was 137,880 and there was a reduction of up to 27.2% during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemics concerning previous years. Total costs for hydrocephalus management in the country amounted to 140,610,585.51 dollars., Conclusions: Hydrocephalus has a significant impact on public health budgets and pediatric mortality rates; however, it is probably underestimated, due to the paucity of demographic data and epidemiological studies in Latin America and, specifically, in Brazil. The dataSUS also has several limitations in accessing certain data related to hydrocephalus, making it difficult to have a more assertive understanding of the disease in Brazil. (1) Background: The continuous improvement in cancer treatment has led to improvement in patients’ survival and a subsequent increase in the number of cancer survivors living with adverse side effects of cancer treatments, sometimes with a high and adverse impact on their health-related quality of life (HRQOL). Side effects of cancer treatments are frequently associated with chronic status of oxidative stress, inflammation, and/or ischemia. The potential for ozone treatment to modulate those processes and improve some of those adverse effects has previously been described. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of ozone treatment on the HRQOL and grade of toxicity in symptomatic cancer survivors. (2) Methods: Before and after ozone treatment, we assessed (i) the HRQOL (according to the EQ-5D-5L questionnaire) and (ii) the grade of toxicity (according to the Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events of the National Cancer Institute of EEUU (CTCAE v.5.0)) in 26 cancer survivors with chronic side effects of radiotherapy and chemotherapy. (3) Results: There was a significant (p < 0.001) improvement in the EQ-5D-5L index as per the self-reported outcome evaluation of patients’ health status. All the dimensions of the EQ-5D-5L questionnaire (mobility, self-care, activities, pain/discomfort, and anxiety/depression) and the self-evaluation of the health status using the visual analog scale were significantly improved (p < 0.05). The grade of toxicity was also significantly decreased (p < 0.001). (4) Conclusions: In cancer survivors with chronic side effects of cancer treatment, ozone treatment can improve the grade of toxicity and the HRQOL. These results merit additional research. Further studies are ongoing.

Hydrocephalus is defined as the accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid in the brain ventricles. The usual treatment of hydrocephalus is surgical (shunt), but not all patients can undergo treatment immediately after diagnosis. Thus, neuroprotective measures were tested to minimize the tissue damage involved. Memantine is a non-competitive antagonist of the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor, which has shown a neuroprotective action in neurodegenerative diseases. This study aimed to evaluate the neuroprotective response of memantine in animals treated with or without a ventricular-subcutaneous shunt. Seven-day-old male Wistar rats induced by intracisternal injection of kaolin were used, divided into five groups: intact control (n = 10), hydrocephalic (n = 10), hydrocephalic treated with memantine (20 mg/kg/day) (n = 10), hydrocephalic treated with shunt (n = 10), hydrocephalic treated with shunt and memantine (20 mg/kg/day) (n = 10). Memantine administration was started on the day after hydrocephalus induction and continued until the last day of the experimental period, totaling 21 consecutive days of drug application. The CSF shunt surgery was performed seven days after hydrocephalus induction. Behavioral tests (open field, and modified Morris water maze), histological, and immunohistochemical evaluations were performed. Treatment with memantine resulted in significant improvement (p &lt; 0.05) in sensorimotor development, preservation of spatial memory, reduction of astrocytic reaction in the corpus callosum, cortex, and germinal matrix. When associated with the shunt, it has also been shown to reduce the cell death cascade. Successful mitigation efforts entail accurate estimation of on-farm emission and prediction models can be an alternative to current laborious and costly in vivo CH 4 measurement techniques. This study aimed to: (1) collate a database of individual dairy cattle CH 4 emission data from studies conducted in the Latin America and Caribbean (LAC) region; (2) identify key variables for predicting CH 4 production (g d -1 ) and yield [g kg -1 of dry matter intake (DMI)]; (3) develop and cross-validate these newly-developed models; and (4) compare models' predictive ability with equations currently used to support national greenhouse gas (GHG) inventories. A total of 42 studies including 1327 individual dairy cattle records were collated. After removing outliers, the final database retained 34 studies and 610 animal records. Production and yield of CH 4 were predicted by fitting mixed-effects models with a random effect of study. Evaluation of developed models and fourteen extant equations was assessed on all-data, confined, and grazing cows subsets. Feed intake was the most important predictor of CH 4 production. Our best-developed CH 4 production models outperformed Tier 2 equations from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in the all-data and grazing subsets, whereas they had similar performance for confined animals. Developed CH 4 production models that include milk yield can be accurate and useful when feed intake is missing. Some extant equations had similar predictive performance to our best-developed models and can be an option for predicting CH 4 production from LAC dairy cows. Extant equations were not accurate in predicting CH 4 yield. Introduction: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) was recognized as a pandemic by the World Health Organization on March 11, 2020. As an infectious disease with no specific treatment, several measures have been established to minimize the outbreak of this disease, including social isolation., Objective: To evaluate the behavior of adolescents during the isolation period., Methods: This is a cross-sectional descriptive study conducted at the Adolescent Health Studies Center. Data were obtained from a questionnaire prepared on Google Forms, sent by a multiplatform instant messaging application, and analyzed using the Stata 14 software., Results: A total of 208 adolescents with a mean age of 15.3 years (SD ± 1.8) answered the questionnaire, 57.7% were female. About 93.3% of adolescents said they were in isolation with a changed routine, 67.3% increased their food consumption, 86.5% were inactive, and 58.7% reported screen time over 8 h/d. There was an association between anxiety and increased food consumption (odds ratio: 3.9; CI 95% 2-7.5; p  = 0.00), sleeping difficulty (odds ratio: 3.6; CI 95% 1.9-6.8; p  = 0.00), and conflicting family relationship (odds ratio: 5.7; CI 95% 1.6-7.8; p  = 0.01)., Conclusion: The study revealed that social isolation due to an infectious disease was associated with several effects on the behavior and eating behavior of adolescents, which need to be acknowledged to encourage them to lead a healthy lifestyle after the COVID-19 confinement.

Hydrocephalus is characterized by the accumulation of CSF within the cerebral ventricles and the subarachnoid space. Ventricular volume can progressively increase and generate serious damage to the nervous system, with cerebral hypoxia/ischemia as one of the most important factors involved. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) improves oxygen supply to tissues, which can reduce the progression of lesions secondary to ventricular enlargement. We evaluated whether HBOT associated with CSF diversion can promote neuroprotective effects to structures damaged by ventriculomegaly and understand its role. Seven-day-old male Wistar Hannover rats submitted to hydrocephalus by intracisternal injection of 15% kaolin were used. The animals were divided into six groups, with ten animals in each: control, control associated with hyperbaric therapy, hydrocephalic without treatment, hydrocephalic treated with hyperbaric oxygen therapy, hydrocephalic treated with CSF deviation, and hydrocephalic treated with hyperbaric oxygen therapy associated with CSF deviation. To assess the response to treatment, behavioral tests were performed such as modified Morris water maze and object recognition, evaluation by transcranial ultrasonography, histology by Hematoxylin-Eosin and Luxol Fast Blue, immunohistochemistry for GFAP, Ki-67, Caspase-3, COX-2, NeuN and SOD1, and biochemical ELISA assay for GFAP and MBP. The results show that the association of treatments exerts neuroprotective effects such as neurobehavioral improvement, preservation of periventricular structures, antioxidant effect, and reduction of damage resulting from ischemia and the neuroinflammatory process. The neuroprotective effect of Edaravone in young hydrocephalic rats associated with a CSF derivation system was evaluated. The drug has already been shown to be beneficial in experimental hydrocephalus, but the combination of this drug with shunt surgery has not yet been investigated. Fifty-seven-day-old Wistar rats submitted to hydrocephalus by injection of kaolin in the cisterna magna were used and divided into five groups: control (n = 10), hydrocephalic (n = 10), hydrocephalic treated with Edaravone (20 mg/kg/day) (n = 10), hydrocephalic treated with shunt (n = 10) and hydrocephalic treated with shunt and Edaravone (n = 10). Administration of the Edaravone was started 24 h after hydrocephalus induction (P1) and continued until the experimental endpoint (P21). The CSF shunt surgery was performed seven days after hydrocephalus induction (P7). Open-field tests, histological evaluation by hematoxylin and eosin, immunohistochemistry by Caspase-3 and GFAP, and ELISA biochemistry by GFAP were performed. Edaravone reduced reactive astrogliosis in the corpus callosum and germinal matrix (p < 0.05). When used alone or associated with CSF shunt surgery, the drug decreased the cell death process (p < 0.0001) and improved the morphological aspect of the astroglia (p < 0.05). The results showed that Edaravone associated with CSF bypass surgery promotes neuroprotection in young hydrocephalic rats by reducing reactive astrogliosis and decreasing cell death., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier B.V. Background: Chronic lung diseases are characterized by airway inflammation and remodelling of the lung parenchyma that triggers considerable impairment of respiratory function., Objective: In this study, two compounds belonging to the N-acylhydrazone class were evaluated, aiming to identify new therapeutic agents for pulmonary inflammatory diseases., Materials and Methods: The acute toxicity of 2-cyano-N'-(3-ethoxy-4-hydroxybenzylidene)- acetohydrazide (JR-12) and N'-benzylidene-2-cyano-3-phenylacrylohydrazide (JR09-Bz) was evaluated. Afterwards, they were tested in models of ovalbumin (OVA)-induced allergic asthma and pleurisy, bleomycin-induced pulmonary fibrosis, in addition to mucolytic activity., Results and Discussion: The compounds did not show toxicity at the dose of 2,000 mg/kg, and no animal died. On OVA-induced pleurisy, animals treated with JR-12 or JR09-Bz at a dose of 10 mg/kg (orally) showed significant inhibition of the leukocyte infiltrate in the bronchoalveolar lavage by 62.5% and 61.5%, respectively, compared to the control group. The compounds JR-12 and JR09-Bz were also active in blocking the allergic asthmatic response triggered by OVA, reducing the leukocyte infiltrate by 73.1% and 69.8%, respectively. Histopathological changes and mast cell migration in treated animals with JR-12 or JR09-Bz were similar to treatment with the reference drugs dexamethasone and montelukast. JR-12 and JR09-Bz also reversed airway remodeling in animals on the bleomycin-induced fibrosis model compared to the control group. Furthermore, it was observed that N-arylhydrazone derivatives showed expectorant and mucolytic activities, increasing mucus secretion by 45.6% and 63.8% for JR-12 and JR09-Bz, respectively., Conclusion: Together, the results show that JR-12 and JR09-Bz showed promising activity against airway inflammation, as well as low toxicity., (Copyright© Bentham Science Publishers; For any queries, please email at epub@benthamscience.net.)

The objective of this study was to investigate the influence of timing of paddock allocation (AM or PM) in tropical grass on nutritive value of the herbage, dry matter intake (DMI), milk yield and composition, ruminal fermentation, nitrogen excretion, and enteric CH 4 emissions of dairy cows. Twenty cows were grouped in pairs and randomly distributed within pair to one of two treatments. PM herbage had greater contents of dry matter (DM), soluble carbohydrates, starch, and nonfibrous carbohydrate to protein ratio and lower contents of neutral detergent fiber and acid detergent fiber. There was no treatment effect on DMI, N excretion, milk yield, and CH 4 emissions. However, milk protein and casein yields tended to be greater for PM than AM, while milk urea nitrogen concentration was lower for PM than AM. The increase in nutritive value of the afternoon relative to the morning herbage within the framework of this study was not large enough to increase DMI and milk yield or to decrease CH 4 emission intensity by the dairy cows as hypothesized. Purposes: Demonstrate that transcranial ultrasonography (TUS) scanning is viable and useful as a diagnostic method in experimental hydrocephalus, as well as to compare measurements of cerebral and ventricular width obtained from TUS scans of hydrocephalic rats with post-mortem anatomical specimens, aiming for the development of accurate criteria to establish ventricular enlargement and progression of hydrocephalus subsequently., Methods: Thirty-five male Wistar rats were used. Following hydrocephalus induction, they underwent a transcranial ultrasound scan to measure cerebral and ventricular dimensions, in the fourth and 21 post-induction days. By the end of the experiments, measurements obtained from TUS scans were compared with actual values as seen in the post-mortem specimens of each animal., Results: Ventricular dilation could be clearly visualized in hydrocephalic animals. We performed intraclass correlation coefficient and linear regression analyses that have demonstrated a precise correlation between measurements of TUS scans and post-mortem specimens; we have found a similarity of 0,95 for the cerebral diameter and 0,97 for ventricular width., Conclusions: Transcranial ultrasonography is a useful and reliable diagnostic tool for experimental hydrocephalus; also, it can be used to assess the progression of ventriculomegaly in animal models of hydrocephalus.

Hendra virus (HeV) and Nipah virus (NiV) are henipaviruses (HNVs) causing respiratory illness and severe encephalitis in humans, with fatality rates of 50-100%. There are no licensed therapeutics or vaccines to protect humans. HeV and NiV use a receptor-binding glycoprotein (G) and a fusion glycoprotein (F) to enter host cells. HNV F and G are the main targets of the humoral immune response, and the presence of neutralizing antibodies is a correlate of protection against NiV and HeV in experimentally infected animals. We describe here two cross-reactive F-specific antibodies, 1F5 and 12B2, that neutralize NiV and HeV through inhibition of membrane fusion. Cryo-electron microscopy structures reveal that 1F5 and 12B2 recognize distinct prefusion-specific, conserved quaternary epitopes and lock F in its prefusion conformation. We provide proof-of-concept for using antibody cocktails for neutralizing NiV and HeV and define a roadmap for developing effective countermeasures against these highly pathogenic viruses.

Background: In last years, few attention has given to the patient's prediagnostic costs when evaluating the introduction of new technologies for tuberculosis (TB) and in this context, this study evaluated patient's costs and cost-effectiveness incurred with TB diagnosis comparing Bactec TM MGIT TM 960 system (MGIT) to the Löwestein-Jensen (LJ) culture in a health center and in a university hospital, in Rio de Janeiro City, Brazil., Methods: Patient's mean costs were evaluated during the diagnosis process and cost-effectiveness based on mean time in days for the adoption of appropriate clinical anti-TB treatment in two health units comparing culture by means LJ and MGIT., Results: The mean cost of LJ and MGIT in the health center was U. S. dollars (US$) 26.6 and US$ 45.13, respectively, and in university hospital was US$ 206.87 and US$ 285.48, respectively. Comparing the two approaches for TB diagnosis incurred by the patients, the incremental cost-effectiveness of MGIT compared to LJ was US$ 0.88 and US$ 4.03 per patient, respectively, to reduce the average time to adopt appropriate treatment., Conclusions: The culture method directly impacts patient costs while waiting for the correct diagnosis and contributing to aggravating costs with patients with TB., Competing Interests: None

Magnesium (Mg[Formula: see text] is an essential mineral for several cellular functions. The concentration of this ion below the physiological concentration induces recurrent neuronal discharges both in slices of the hippocampus and in neuronal cultures. These epileptiform discharges are initially sensitive to the application of [Formula: see text]-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonists, but these antagonists may lose their effectiveness with prolonged exposure to low [Mg[Formula: see text]], when extracellular Ca[Formula: see text] reduction occurs, typical of ictal periods, indicating the absence of synaptic connections. The study herein presented aimed at investigating the effect of reducing the [Mg[Formula: see text]] during the induction of Nonsynaptic Epileptiform Activities (NSEA). As an experimental protocol, NSEA were induced in rat hippocampal dentate gyrus (DG), using a bath solution containing high-K[Formula: see text] and zero-added-Ca[Formula: see text]. Additionally, computer simulations were performed using a mathematical model that represents electrochemical characteristics of the tissue of the DG granular layer. The experimental results show that the reduction of [Mg[Formula: see text]] causes an increase in the duration of the ictal period and a reduction in the interictal period, intensifying epileptiform discharges. The computer simulations suggest that the reduction of the Mg[Formula: see text] level intensifies the epileptiform discharges by a joint effect of reducing the surface charge screening and reducing the activity of the Na/K pump.

In grasses, leaf expansion and central rib growth occur in a non-proportional manner, with potential implications to the nutritive value of leaves. The objective of this study was to evaluate the relationship among blade length, percentage of central rib, anatomical characteristics and the nutritive value along the length of leaf blades of different sizes and hierarchical order of insertion on the tiller axis of Napier elephant grass (Pennisetum purpureum Schum. cv. Napier). Two experiments were carried out with isolated growing plants during the summer of 2017 (January to March). Central rib mass increased linearly with the increase in leaf blade mass and its percentage relative to blade mass decreased from the base to the tip of the leaf. There were no significant variations in anatomical characteristics along the length of leaf blades when central rib was not taken into account. The central rib showed negative relationship with nutritive value. The apical portions of long leaves showed similar digestibility to short leaves. The multivariate analysis of Cluster and Principal Components grouped the response variables according to leaf hierarchical order, final blade length and percentage of structural tissues, highlighting the relationship between leaf size, structural tissues and nutritive value.

In this work, we present a computational investigation on the photoexcitation of indigo carmine (IC). Physical insights regarding IC photoexcitation and photolysis were obtained from a fundamental perspective through quantum chemistry computations. Density functional theory (DFT) was used to investigate the ground state while its time-dependent formalism (TD-DFT) was used for probing excited state properties, such as vertical excitation energies, generalized oscillator strengths (GOS), and structures. All the computations were undertaken using two different approaches: M06-2X/6-311+G(d,p) and CAM-B3LYP/6-311+G(d,p), in water. Results determined using both methods are in systematic agreement. For instance, the first singlet excited state was found at 2.28 eV (with GOS = 0.4730) and 2.19 eV (GOS = 0.4695) at the TD-DFT/CAM-B3LYP/6-311+G(d,p) and TD-DFT/M06-2X/6-311+G(d,p) levels of theory, respectively. Excellent agreement was observed between the computed and the corresponding experimental UV-Vis spectra. Moreover, results suggest IC undergoes photodecomposition through excited state chemical reaction rather than via a direct photolysis path. To the best of our knowledge, this work is the first to tackle the photoexcitation, and its potential connections to photodegradation, of IC from a fundamental chemical perspective, being presented with expectations to motivate further studies.

In this work, we present a computational investigation on the structure and energetics of eleocarpanthraquinone, a newly isolated polyphenolic anthrone-antraquinone. Properties such as bond lengths, angles, atomic charges, bond dissociation enthalpies (BDEs), and ionization potential (IP) were determined through the use of density functional theory (DFT). The B3LYP and M06-2X exchange-correlation functionals were employed along with the 6-31+G(d,p), 6-31+ +G(d,p), and 6-311+G(d,p) basis sets for performing computations in the gas-phase, water, methanol, and ethanol. The conformation presenting all the hydroxyl groups undergoing hydrogen-bond interactions with neighboring oxygen atoms (conformation 5) was assigned as the most stable structure while its counterpart presenting no hydrogen-bond interaction was found to be 36.45 kcal/mol less stable than conformation 5 in the potential energy surface probed at the B3LYP/6-311+G(d,p) level of theory in the gas-phase, for instance. More importantly, the lowest O-H bond dissociation enthalpy was determined to be 93.80 kcal/mol at the B3LYP/6-311+G(d,p) level of theory in water against the 146.58 kcal/mol regarding the IP computed at the same approach, suggesting the hydrogen atom transfer mechanism as being preferred over the single electron transfer mechanism in regards to the antioxidant potential for the case of eleocarpanthraquinone; the same conclusion was drawn from the outcomes of all the other approaches used.

The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of energy supplementation and pre-grazing sward height on grazing behavior, nutrient intake, digestion, and metabolism of cattle in tropical pastures managed as a rotational grazing system. Eight rumen-cannulated Nellore steers (24 mo of age; 300 ± 6.0 kg body weight [BW]) were used in a replicated 4 × 4 Latin square design. Treatments consisted of two levels of energy supplementation (0% [none] or 0.3% of BW of ground corn on an as-fed basis) and two pre-grazing sward heights (25 cm [defined by 95% light interception (LI)] or 35 cm [defined by ≥ 97.5% LI]) constituting four treatments. Steers grazed Marandu Palisadegrass [Brachiaria brizantha Stapf. cv. Marandu] and post-grazing sward height was 15 cm for all treatments. Forage dry matter intake (DMI) was increased (P = 0.01) when sward height was 25 cm (1.86% vs. 1.32% BW) and decreased (P = 0.04) when 0.3% BW supplement was fed (1.79% vs. 1.38% BW). Total and digestible DMI were not affected by energy supplementation (P = 0.57) but were increased when sward height was 25 cm (P = 0.01). Steers grazing the 25-cm sward height treatment spent less time grazing and more time resting, took fewer steps between feeding stations, and had a greater bite rate compared with 35-cm height treatment (P < 0.05). Energy supplementation reduced grazing time (P = 0.02) but did not affect any other grazing behavior parameter (P = 0.11). Energy supplementation increased (P < 0.01) diet dry matter digestibility but had no effect on crude protein and neutral detergent fiber digestibilities (P = 0.13). Compared with 35-cm pre-grazing sward height, steers at 25 cm presented lower rumen pH (6.39 vs. 6.52) and greater rumen ammonia nitrogen (11.22 vs. 9.77 mg/dL) and N retention (49.7% vs. 20.8%, P < 0.05). The pre-grazing sward height of 25 cm improved harvesting efficiency and energy intake by cattle, while feeding 0.3% of BW energy supplement did not increase the energy intake of cattle on tropical pasture under rotational grazing., (© The Author(s) 2020. Background: Fluid overload is a risk factor for morbidity, mortality, and prolonged ventilation time after surgery. Patients on maintenance hemodialysis might be at higher risk. We hypothesized that fluid accumulation would be directly associated with extended ventilation time in patients on hemodialysis, as compared to patients with chronic kidney disease not on dialysis (CKD3-4) and patients with normal renal function (reference group)., Methods: This is a prospective observational study that included patients submitted to isolated and elective coronary artery bypass surgery, divided in 3 groups according to time on mechanical ventilation: < 24 h, 24-48 h and > 48 h. The same observer followed patients daily from the surgery to the hospital discharge. Cumulative fluid balance was defined as the sum of daily fluid balance over the first 5 days following surgery., Results: Patients requiring more than 48 h of ventilation (5.3%) had a lower estimated glomerular filtration rate, were more likely to be on maintenance dialysis, had longer anesthesia time, needed higher dobutamine and noradrenaline infusion following surgery, and had longer hospitalization stay. Multivariate analysis revealed that the fluid accumulation, scores of sequential organ failure assessment in the day following surgery, and the renal function (normal, chronic kidney disease not on dialysis and maintenance hemodialysis) were independently associated with time in mechanical ventilation. Among patients on hemodialysis, the time from the surgery to the first hemodialysis session also accounted for the time on mechanical ventilation., Conclusions: Fluid accumulation is an important risk factor for lengthening mechanical ventilation, particularly in patients on hemodialysis. Future studies are warranted to address the ideal timing for initiating dialysis in this scenario in an attempt to reduce fluid accumulation and avoid prolonged ventilation time and hospital stay.

Background: Drug-resistant tuberculosis (TB) is an ongoing health threat, and the greatest challenge to adequate control of TB in many countries lies in the lack of proper laboratory drug-susceptibility test. The aim of this study was to evaluate the activity-based costs (ABC) of Kit SIRE Nitratase ® (Kit SIRE) and compare its values with the conventional drug-susceptibility test., Methods: The ABC was calculated for three different approaches: Kit SIRE (clinical samples and cultures), proportion methods in Lowenstein Jensen (PM-LJ), and the Bactec™ MGIT™ 960 system based on Mycobacterial Research Laboratory's routine., Results: The ABC of Kit SIRE from cultures was US$ 148.54, while from clinical samples was US$ 136.12. In the case of conventional tests, the ABC of Bactec™ MGIT™ 960 was US$ 227.63 and of the PM-LJ was US$ 132.64. The Kit SIRE has a lower ABC when clinical samples are used instead of cultures. Compared to conventional tests, the ABC is similar to the PM-LJ and lower the Bactec™ MGIT™ 960., Conclusion: The Kit SIRE should be used as a screening method in clinical specimens and in culture for laboratories that do not have Bactec™ MGIT™ 960. Therefore, it can be incorporated into the routine of laboratories in countries with low resources and a high burden of TB and drug-resistant TB., Competing Interests: None

Background: Patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) are less likely to be submitted to coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) then clinical medical treatment based on the potential high risk of mortality. However, whether patients on maintenance dialysis who underwent an elective CABG experience high hospital- and long-term mortality is still debatable., Methods: This is a prospective observational study that evaluated patients who underwent elective CABG. Three groups were compared: reference (n = 167, estimated glomerular filtration rate [eGFR] ≥60 mL/min/1.73 m2), CKD3-4 (n = 84, eGFR 15-59 mL/min/1.73 m2), and maintenance hemodialysis (n = 31). Demographic, clinical, biochemical, fluid balance data, and Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) scores were assessed daily for the same observer from day 1 (surgery) to hospital discharge., Results: The main outcomes were in-hospital and 1-year mortality. Patients aged 63 ± 10, 63 ± 8, and 65 ± 6 years old, in reference, CKD3-4, and dialysis groups, respectively (p = 0.605). Patients from the reference group had a lower prevalence of diabetes (p = 0.010) and hypertension (p = 0.021). SOFA scores were higher in CKD3-4 and dialysis groups (p = 0.001), though this difference disappeared without the renal component (p = 0.326). In-hospital mortality (n = 17) was similar across groups (p = 0.955). There was no difference in 1-year mortality among groups even after adjustments for age, diabetes, intraoperative blood loss, and time on ventilation., Conclusions: CABG short-term mortality seems not to be greater among selected patients on maintenance dialysis. A multidisciplinary team has been helping cardiologists and cardiac surgeons in the decision-making process regarding the best approach in coronary artery disease, and CABG should be considered a worthy therapeutic option., (© 2020 S. Introduction: Hydrocephaly is a disease that affects not only the dynamics of the cerebrospinal fluid, but also other structures of the central nervous system. Although shunt is effective in reducing ventriculomegaly, many neurological damages are not reversed with surgery. Several studies demonstrate that oxidative stress is involved in the genesis of hydrocephalus lesions., Objective: Evaluate the neuroprotective response of quercetin in hydrocephalus., Materials and Methods: Male newborns rats were used, which received the 15% kaolin injection in the cisterna magna for induction of hydrocephalus. They were divided into control group (C), untreated hydrocephalic (HN), shunted hydrocephalic (HD), hydrocephalic treated with distilled water (HA), hydrocephalic treated with distilled water and shunt (HDA), hydrocephalic treated with quercetin peritoneal (HQp), hydrocephalic treated with quercetin peritoneal and shunt (HDQp), hydrocephalic treated with quercetin by gavage (HQg), and hydrocephalus treated with quercetin by gavage and shunt (HDQg)., Results: Quercetin significantly improved the immunohistochemical markers, mainly caspase and GFAP. There were no significant changes in clinical/behavioral assessment. The use of isolated quercetin does not alter the volume and ventricular size, and the realization of ventriculo-subcutaneous shunt in newborn rats with hydrocephalus presents a high morbi-mortality., Conclusion: The use of quercetin shows laboratory improvement of the effects of glial lesion and corpus callosum fibers and is therefore not justified by the use of the routine substance as neuroprotective.

In hydrocephalus, the progressive accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) causes dilatation of the lateral ventricles affecting the third ventricle and diencephalic structures such as the hypothalamus. These structures play a key role in the regulation of several neurovegetative functions by the production of the hormones. Since endocrine disturbances are commonly observed in hydrocephalic children, we investigated the impact of progressive ventricular dilation on the hypothalamus of infant rats submitted to kaolin-induced hydrocephalus. Seven-day-old infant rats were submitted to hydrocephalus induction by kaolin 20% injection method. After 14 days, the animals were decapitated and brain was collected to analyze mitochondrial function, neuronal activity by acetylcholinesterase (AChE) enzyme, oxidative damage, glial activation, and, neurotransmission-related proteins and anti-apoptotic processes in the hypothalamus. The hydrocephalic animals showed reduction in respiratory rates in the States of phosphorylation (P < 0.01) and non-phosphorylation (P < 0.05); increase in AChE activity in both the cytosol (P < 0.05) and the membrane (P < 0.01); decrease in synaptophysin (P < 0.05) and Bcl-2 (P < 0.05) contents and; increase in protein carbonyl (P < 0.01), GFAP (P < 0.01) and Iba-1 (P < 0.05) levels. The results demonstrate that ventricular dilation causes hypothalamic damage characterized by cholinergic dysfunction and suggests further investigation of the synthesis and secretion of hormones to generate new approaches and to assist in the treatment of hydrocephalic patients with hormonal alterations., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier B.V. The bacterium Rickettsia rickettsii causes Brazilian spotted fever (BSF), a highly lethal disease that is transmitted by Amblyomma sculptum ticks in areas where capybaras ( Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris ) are the tick's major hosts. In this study, we evaluated the expansion of a capybara population in a residential park in São Paulo state, and the implications of such expansion to the occurrence of ticks and BSF. The capybara population was quantified during 2004-2013. In 2012, there was a BSF human case in the area, culminating in the complete fencing of the residential park and the official culling of all capybaras. Quantification of ticks in the environment was performed by dry ice traps from 2005 to 2018. Domestic dogs in 2006-2011 and capybaras in 2012 were serologically tested for the presence of anti- R. rickettsii antibodies. Our results show that capybara numbers increased ≈5 times from 2004 (41 capybaras) to 2012 (230 capybaras). Dry ice traps collected A. sculptum and Amblyomma dubitatum. The number of A. dubitatum adult ticks was generally higher than A. sculptum adults during 2005-2006; however, during 2012-2013, A. sculptum outnumbered A. dubitatum by a large difference. During 2016-2018 (after capybara culling), the number of both species fell close to zero. The low numbers of A. sculptum adult ticks during 2005-2006 coincided with relatively low capybara numbers (<80). Thereafter, in 2012, we counted the highest numbers of both A. sculptum ticks and capybaras (230 animals). All 40 canine blood samples were seronegative to R. rickettsii , in contrast to the 48.3% seropositivity (83/172) among capybaras. Our results support that the emergence of BSF in the residential park was a consequence of the increase of the local capybara population, which in turn, provided the increment of the A. sculptum population. Culling the entire capybara population eliminated the risks of new BSF cases.

Objective: The present study aimed to investigate the gender differences for sleep complaints, patterns and disorders of elite athletes during preparation for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games., Methods: The study included 146 athletes from the Brazilian Olympic Team (male: n=86; 59%; female: n=60; 41%). The assessment of the Olympic athletes' sleep took place in 2015, during the preparation period for the Rio Olympic Games. The athletes underwent a single polysomnography (PSG) evaluation. Sleep specialists evaluated the athletes and asked about their sleep complaints during a clinical consultation. In this evaluation week, the athletes did not take part in any training or competitions., Results: The prevalence of sleep complaints was 53% of the athletes during the medical consultation, the most prevalent being insufficient sleep/waking up tired (32%), followed by snoring (21%) and insomnia (19.2%). In relation to the sleep pattern findings, the men had significantly higher sleep latency and wake after sleep onset than the women ( p =0.004 and p =0.002, respectively). The sleep efficiency and sleep stages revealed that men had a lower percentage of sleep efficiency and slow wave sleep than the women ( p =0.001 and p =0.05, respectively)., Conclusion: Most athletes reported some sleep complaints, with men reporting more sleep complaints than women in the clinical evaluation. The PSG showed that 36% of all athletes had a sleep disorder with a greater reduction in sleep quality in men than in women.

Nipah virus (NiV) and Hendra virus (HeV) are zoonotic henipaviruses (HNVs) responsible for outbreaks of encephalitis and respiratory illness with fatality rates of 50-100%. No vaccines or licensed therapeutics currently exist to protect humans against NiV or HeV. HNVs enter host cells by fusing the viral and cellular membranes via the concerted action of the attachment (G) and fusion (F) glycoproteins, the main targets of the humoral immune response. Here, we describe the isolation and humanization of a potent monoclonal antibody cross-neutralizing NiV and HeV. Cryo-electron microscopy, triggering and fusion studies show the antibody binds to a prefusion-specific quaternary epitope, conserved in NiV F and HeV F glycoproteins, and prevents membrane fusion and viral entry. This work supports the importance of the HNV prefusion F conformation for eliciting a robust immune response and paves the way for using this antibody for prophylaxis and post-exposure therapy with NiV- and HeV-infected individuals.

The aim of this study was to investigate the anti-inflammatory effects of two new isoxazoline-acylhydrazone derivatives: N '-(4-methoxybenzylidene)-6-(4-nitro-benzoyl)-3 a ,5,6,6 a -tetrahydro-4 H -pyrrolo[3,2- d ]isoxazole-3-carbohydrazide (R-123) and N '-(4-chlorobenzylidene)-6-(4-chlorobenzoyl)-3 a ,5,6,6 a -tetrahydro-4 H -pyrrolo[3,2- d ]isoxazole-3-carbohydrazide (R-99). An air pouch induced by carrageenan was used for screening the best dose of R-99 and R-123. Using this mouse model, leukocyte migration and cytokine levels (TNF-α and IL-1β) were determined. Paw edema induced by several phlogistic agents and vascular permeability induced by acetic acid were employed to investigate the mechanism of action of the isoxazoline-acylhydrazone derivatives. A docking study was performed with the human histamine H1 receptor to investigate potential antihistaminic activity. Treatment with the compounds reduced leukocyte migration in the air pouch at all doses tested. TNF-α and IL-1β levels were similarly reduced by the two compounds. Vasoactive amines were inhibited in models of paw edema induced by several agents and vascular permeability induced by acetic acid. The docking study suggests that R-99 and R-123 may be inhibitors of the histamine H1 receptor. In conclusion, the results indicate that R-99 and R-123 exhibit promising anti-inflammatory activity related to their ability to inhibit TNF-α, IL-1β, and vasoactive amine production, as well as reduce leukocyte migration and inhibit mast cell degranulation., (This journal is © The Royal Society of Chemistry 2019.)

Greenhouse gases emissions are considered one of the most important environmental issues of dairy farming systems. Nitrous oxide (N 2 O) has particular importance owing to its global warming potential and stratospheric ozone depletion. The objective of this study was to investigate the influence of two rotational grazing strategies characterized by two pre-grazing targets (95% and maximum canopy light interception; LI 95% and LI Max , respectively) on milk production efficiency and N 2 O fluxes from soil in a tropical dairy farming system based on elephant grass (Pennisetum purpureum Schum. cv. Cameroon). Results indicated that LI 95% pre-grazing target provided more frequent defoliations than LI Max . Water-filled pore space, soil and chamber temperatures were affected by sampling periods (P 1 and P 2 ). There was a significant pre-grazing target treatment × sampling period interaction effect on soil NH 4 + concentration, which was most likely associated with urinary-N discharge. During P 1 , there was a greater urinary-N discharge for LI 95% than LI Max (26.3 vs. 20.9 kg of urinary-N/paddock) caused by higher stocking rate, which resulted in greater N 2 O fluxes for LI 95% . Inversely, during P 2 , the soil NH 4 + and N 2 O fluxes were greater for LI Max than LI 95% . During this period, the greater urinary-N discharge (46.8 vs. 44.8 kg of urinary-N/paddock) was likely associated with longer stocking period for LI Max relative to LI 95%, since both treatments had similar stocking rate. Converting hourly N 2 O fluxes to daily basis and relating to milk production efficiency, LI 95% was 40% more efficient than LI Max (0.34 vs. 0.57 g N-N 2 O/kg milk·ha). In addition, LI 95% pre-grazing target decreased urea-N loading per milk production by 34%. Strategic grazing management represented by the LI 95% pre-grazing target allows for intensification of tropical pasture-based dairy systems, enhanced milk production efficiency and decreased N-N 2 O emission intensity., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier B.V. Objective: The objective of this study was to verify if the presence of psychogenic nonepileptic seizures (PNES) could be a risk factor precluding corticoamygdalohippocampectomy (CAH) in patients with refractory temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) and mesial temporal sclerosis (MTS) (TLE-MTS)., Methods: This retrospective cohort study analyzed medical data of patients with refractory TLE-MTS accompanied in a Brazilian epilepsy surgery center. Presurgical psychiatric evaluations were performed using the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) criteria. Engel's I classification two years after surgery was considered as a favorable outcome., Results: Of the 81 patients initially included (65 females; 56.5%), 49 (60.5%) had TLE-MTS without PNES, 24 (29.7%) with TLE-MTS and PNES, and eight (9.8%) with PNES only, who were excluded from further statistical comparisons. Nine patients with PNES (37.5%) underwent CAH versus 35 (71.4%) without PNES (p = 0.005). Five patients (55.5%) with PNES versus 26 (74.3%) without PNES presented Engel I (p = 0.54). The relative risk (RR) was of 1.90 for patients without PNES to undergo CAH and of 1.33 to be at Engel I., Conclusions: In this study, PNES were associated with less CAH. There were no differences, however, regarding favorable postsurgical outcomes. These results highlight that the sole presence of PNES should not preclude CAH in patients with TLE-MTS, despite the necessity of careful presurgical psychiatric evaluation., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier Inc. The strategy of investigating the antioxidant potential of flavonols through the explicit modeling of chemical reactions (initiated to be employed in a previous work from our group) was taken further in this work. Therefore, a theoretical investigation on the reaction between fisetin and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) is presented. All the computations were performed using the density functional theory with the B3LYP functional along with the 6-31G(d,p) basis set. Structural, energetic quantities (ΔG and ΔG ++ ), and reaction rates were probed in order to provide information on the antioxidant activity and to explore the contributions of each hydroxyl group to the referred property. According to the results obtained for the thermodynamic properties, fisetin presents antioxidant potential similar to quercetin (behavior that is also observed experimentally). In addition, the order of contribution of each OH group to the antioxidant potential was found to be 4'-ArOH (the most contributor, presenting ΔG = -5.17 kcal/mol) → 3'-ArOH (ΔG = -3.35 kcal/mol) → 3-ArOH (ΔG = -1.64 kcal/mol) → 7-ArOH (ΔG = 7.72 kcal/mol). These observations are in consistent agreement with the outcomes of other computational investigations performed using bond dissociation enthalpies (BDEs) as descriptors for the antioxidant activity. Therefore, the methodology employed in this work can be used as an alternative for probing antioxidant potential of compounds derived from fisetin. Some species of the genus Miconia are used in Brazilian folk medicine as analgesic and anti-inflammatory; however, several species of this genus are still poorly studied. Therefore, the aims of this study were to investigate the phytochemistry characterization by UPLC-DAD-QTOF-MS/MS, acute toxicity, anti-inflammatory and antinociceptive properties of Miconia minutiflora (Bonpl.) DC. The methanol extract of M. minutiflora (Mm-MeOH) was subjected to ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography (UPLC-DAD-QTOF-MS/MS) for the identification of the main phytocompounds. The anti-inflammatory properties of the extracts were studied using several inflammation models induced by carrageenan and acetic acid-induced vascular permeability. Antinociceptive effects of Mm-MeOH were assessed in nociception induced by intraperitoneal acetic acid or subplantar formalin injection. The role of α-adrenergic, cholinergic, and opioid receptors in modulating the extract's antinociceptive activity was determined. Analyses by UPLC-DAD-QTOF-MS/MS revealed the presence of ellagic acid, gallotannin, and terpenes in the methanol extract. Mm-MeOH (100 mg/kg) reduced carrageenan-induced paw edema and vascular permeability and inhibited leukocyte migration toward the air pouch and pleural cavity. Furthermore, Mm-MeOH decreased tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and interleukin-1β (IL-1β) levels. Administration of Mm-MeOH reduced the number of writhes by 58.9% and increased the pain threshold in the formalin test. The anti-inflammatory action mechanism of Mm-MeOH is associated with inhibition of proinflammatory cytokines TNF-α and IL-1β, whereas the antinociceptive actions involve peripheral and central mechanisms with participation of α2-adrenergic receptors. These effects may be attributed to the presence of polyphenolics in the extract.

Agricultural systems are responsible for environmental impacts that can be mitigated through the adoption of more sustainable principles. Our objective was to investigate the influence of two pre-grazing targets (95% and maximum canopy light interception during pasture regrowth; LI 95% and LI Max , respectively) on sward structure and herbage nutritive value of elephant grass cv. Cameroon, and dry matter intake (DMI), milk yield, stocking rate, enteric methane (CH 4 ) emissions by Holstein × Jersey dairy cows. We hypothesized that grazing strategies modifying the sward structure of elephant grass (Pennisetum purpureum Schum.) improves nutritive value of herbage, increasing DMI and reducing intensity of enteric CH 4 emissions, providing environmental and productivity benefits to tropical pasture-based dairy systems. Results indicated that pre-sward surface height was greater for LI Max (≈135 cm) than LI 95% (≈100 cm) and can be used as a reliable field guide for monitoring sward structure. Grazing management based on LI 95% criteria improved herbage nutritive value and grazing efficiency, allowing greater DMI, milk yield and stocking rate by dairy cows. Daily enteric CH 4 emission was not affected; however, cows grazing elephant grass at LI 95% were more efficient and emitted 21% less CH 4 /kg of milk yield and 18% less CH 4 /kg of DMI. The 51% increase in milk yield per hectare overcame the 29% increase in enteric CH 4 emissions per hectare in LI 95% grazing management. Thereby the same resource allocation resulted in a 16% mitigation of the main greenhouse gas from pasture-based dairy systems. Overall, strategic grazing management is an environmental friendly practice that improves use efficiency of allocated resources through optimization of processes evolving plant, ruminant and their interface, and enhances milk production efficiency of tropical pasture-based systems., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier B.V. This study investigated the effect of using an artificial bright light on the entrainment of the sleep/wake cycle as well as the reaction times of athletes before the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. A total of 22 athletes from the Brazilian Olympic Swimming Team were evaluated, with the aim of preparing them to compete at a time when they would normally be about to go to bed for the night. During the 8-day acclimatization period, their sleep/wake cycles were assessed by actigraphy, with all the athletes being treated with artificial light therapy for between 30 and 45 min (starting at day 3). In addition, other recommendations to improve sleep hygiene were made to the athletes. In order to assess reaction times, the Psychomotor Vigilance Test was performed before (day 1) and after (day 8) the bright light therapy. As a result of the intervention, the athletes slept later on the third (p = 0.01), seventh (p = 0.01) and eighth (p = 0.01) days after starting bright light therapy. Regarding reaction times, when tested in the morning the athletes showed improved average (p = 0.01) and minimum reaction time (p = 0.03) when comparing day 8 to day 1. When tested in the evening, they showed improved average (p = 0.04), minimum (p = 0.03) and maximum reaction time (p = 0.02) when comparing day 8 to day 1. Light therapy treatment delayed the sleep/wake cycles and improved reaction times of members of the swimming team. The use of bright light therapy was shown to be effective in modulating the sleep/wake cycles of athletes who had to perform in competitions that took place late at night.

In this work, we present a computational investigation on the reactions between two well-known antioxidants (quercetin and morin) and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH). A density functional theory (DFT) approach with the B3LYP functional and the 6-31G(d,p) basis set was used for the simulations. The structural and energetic parameters (Gibbs free-energy, ΔG, and Gibbs free-energy of activation, ΔG ++ ) were determined to provide information on the antioxidant activity as well as to evaluate the contributions of each hydroxyl group to the referred property. According to the results obtained, quercetin presented three hydroxyls as being thermodynamically spontaneous in the reaction with DPPH (4[Formula: see text]-ArOH, 3[Formula: see text]-ArOH, and 3-ArOH, with ΔG = -4.93 kcal/mol, -2.89 kcal/mol, and -1.87 kcal/mol, respectively) against only two in the case of morin (2[Formula: see text]-ArOH and 3-ArOH, with ΔG = -7.56 kcal/mol and -4.57 kcal/mol, respectively). Hence, quercetin was found to be a more efficient antioxidant, which is in agreement with different experimental and computational investigations of bond dissociation enthalpies (BDEs). However, the order of contribution of the OH groups of each compound to the antioxidant potential present some differences when compared to what was seen in the previous investigations, especially for morin. These findings are in contrast to what was observed in studies based on the determinations of BDEs. Therefore, experimental investigations on the hydrogen-atom transfer mechanism (HAT) for both compounds are encouraged in order to clarify these observations.

Purpose: We investigated the possible beneficial effects that hyperbaric oxygen therapy could offer in different brain structures affected by ventriculomegaly in pup rats submitted to experimental hydrocephalus., Methods: Seven-day-old Wistar rats were submitted to hydrocephalus by intracisternal injection of 10% kaolin into the cisterna magna. The animals were divided into four groups: control (n = 5); control with HBOT (3ATA/2 h/day) (n = 5); untreated hydrocephalic (n = 10); hydrocephalic treated with HBOT (3ATA/2 h/day) (n = 10). The treatment with HBOT was performed daily for 14 days post-induction of hydrocephalus. To evaluate the response to treatment, behavioral tests (open field, Morris water maze, and activity monitor) were performed. After 14 days, the animals were euthanized, and the brain was removed for histological (hematoxylin-eosin and solochrome-cyanine) and immunohistochemical (GFAP and Ki-67) studies., Results: The hyperbaric treatment, although not causing changes in ventricular enlargement, resulted in a significant improvement in the behavioral performance (p = 0.0001), with greater agility and exploration of the environment, preservation of spatial memory, and greater learning capacity (p = 0.0001). Through the immunohistochemical study, the astrocytic activity (glial fibrillary acidic protein) in the corpus callosum (p = 0.0001) and in the germinative matrix (p = 0.0033) was significantly reduced as compared to that in the H group., Conclusion: The results suggest that hyperbaric treatment bettered the behavioral performance and offered benefits to the structures affected by the ventricular increase helping to recover the brain damages. In this way, the HBOT it can be considered an adjuvant therapy for the treatment of hydrocephalus.

Background: Temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) represents the most common type of partial epilepsy. Early age of onset, a history of febrile convulsions, epileptiform discharges on electroencephalography, duration of epilepsy, number of generalized seizures and severity of psychiatric disorders are possible prognostic factors in patients with mesial temporal sclerosis. The aim of this study is to review the findings of clinical research, semiotic, psychological, electrophysiological and neuroradiological, and to relate these findings with the prognosis of patients with TLE who underwent anteromedial temporal lobectomy (ATL)., Methods: Of 1214 patients evaluated for surgery in the epilepsy Center of the São Jose do Rio Preto Faculty of Medicine (Faculdade de Medicina de São José do Rio Preto - FAMERP), a tertiary Brazilian epilepsy center, 459 underwent ATL for TLE. Exams and clinical data were analyzed and compared with Engel classification for outcome., Results: Of all the items analyzed, the MRI showed a greater influence on the outcome of patients and for clinical evaluation and pathological antecedents, age at surgery, the epilepsy duration, seizure frequency, mesial temporal sclerosis, dysplasia, perinatal insults, vascular insults, a family history of epilepsy, febrile seizures, neuropsychological abnormalities and presence of generalized tonic-clonic seizure has a statistical significance., Conclusions: In order to identify the most appropriate candidates for ATL, it is very important to consider the prognostic factors associated with favorable for counseling patients in daily practice.
