Objective: To evaluate the association of hypertriglyceridemic waist phenotype with metabolic changes in diabetic elderly. Methods: This is a cross-sectional investigation, with secondary data, including diabetic elderly from Northeast Brazil. The phenotype was defined in the simultaneous presence of altered waist circumference (≥ 80 women ≥ 90 men) and elevated triglyceride levels (≥150mg / dL). The independent variables investigated involved sociodemographic conditions (gender, age, marital status and education); clinical conditions (time since diagnosis, smoking, drinking and blood pressure); lifestyle (food consumption and physical activity); anthropometry (body mass index); biochemistry (fasting glucose, glycosylated hemoglobin, total cholesterol, HDL-c and LDL-c).Results: The prevalence of hypertriglyceridemic waist phenotype was observed in 44.7% of the elderly and was more strongly associated with total cholesterol (PR=1,72), glycosylated hemoglobin (PR= 1,52) and HDL (PR=1,51). Conclusion: According to the results found, hypertriglyceridemic waist phenotype is an event with high prevalence in elderly diabetics. Due to its simple applicability, and due to its foundation in the literature as a tool for screening elderly people with metabolic risk, the phenotype is a parameter that can be used by health professionals in the clinical routine, especially in Primary Care. Aim: There are few studies comparing the effects of geriatric syndromes and abnormalities in nutritional status and body composition on outcomes among older individuals who have been previously hospitalized. Our study aimed to evaluate the frequency and diagnosis of geriatric syndromes, low muscle quality, and nutritional status in hospitalized older individuals, and to examine their impact on both short- and long-term outcomes. Methods: This was a prospective study involving older adults (≥60 years). We assessed nutritional status, muscle quality, sarcopenia, and frailty. The outcomes were functional dependence, length of hospital stay, transfer to the Intensive Care Unit, number of readmissions, and mortality. Multivariate analysis was conducted to identify independent risk factors. Results: Even after adjustment for age and sex, increased risk of death was associated with possible undernourishment, sarcopenia, low muscle quality, and frailty (P < 0.05), but not the length of hospital stay (P > 0.05). Our multivariate analysis showed that frailty was independently associated with mortality and functional dependence. Low muscle quality was independently associated with functional dependence. Conclusions: Geriatric syndromes, abnormalities in body composition, and the overall nutritional status of older patients are important risk factors for adverse outcomes, including functional dependence and mortality. These findings emphasize the need for interventions to improve muscle quality, prevent and treat malnutrition and sarcopenia, and address frailty in hospitalized patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study aimed to assess the knowledge about diabetes, the attitude for self-care and associated factors through a cross-sectional study, the baseline of a randomized clinical trial with elderly diabetic in primary health care in Recife, Northeastern Brazil. We used the Diabetes Knowledge Scale (DKN-A) and Diabetes Attitudes Questionnaire (ATT-19). Of the 202 elderly, 77.7% had insufficient knowledge of the disease, especially for ketonuria, food replacement and were unaware of the causes and care of hypoglycemia. As for attitude, 85.6% had a negative psychological adjustment for diabetes. The logistic regression model showed that living alone was a protective factor (OR = 0.24; 95% CI 0.09-0.65; OR = 0.22; 95% CI 0.07 to 0.71), and low education, a risk factor (OR = 7.78; 95% CI 3.36-18.01; OR = 13.05; 95% CI 4.63-36.82) for the insufficient knowledge and the negative attitude for self-care, respectively. The findings reinforce the need for interdisciplinary educational actions that include socioeconomic, psycho-emotional and educational aspects in diabetes management to maintain elderly autonomy and functionality. The C677T polymorphism of the methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase gene (MTHFR) is related to folate metabolism and can alter the levels of biochemical markers.Objective: Investigate the influence of the MTHFR C677T polymorphism on the effects of a dietary folate intervention on oxidative stress in women with overweight or obesity.Methods: Forty-eight adult women with overweight or obesity were subjected to a 24-hour dietary recall, anthropometric measurements, biochemical analysis, and genotyping of the MTHFR C677T polymorphism. They were allocated by convenience sampling to 2 groups, which received 300 g of folate-rich vegetables containing 191 µg/d (Group 1) (n = 24) or 95 µg/d (Group 2) (n = 24) of folate for 8 weeks.Results: The dietary intervention increased the serum folic acid levels in the 2 analyzed groups. The intervention with 191 µg/d of folate led to relevant results in terms of homocysteine levels (p = 0.0005) and total antioxidant capacity (p = 0.0261); the effect was larger among carriers of the TT genotype.Conclusions: The study demonstrated the beneficial effect of folate intake in terms of a TAC elevation for the CC and TT genotypes of the MTHFR C677T polymorphism, an increase in folic acid levels for all genotypes, and a reduction in the Hcy levels for the TT genotype in response to an intervention consisting of an intake of 191 µg/d of folate supplied by vegetables. Objective: Cross-sectional study to assess the characteristics of the risk behaviors for eating disorders (EDs) in school children between 10 and 14 years of age in the city of Recife, Pernambuco, Brazil.Methods: 1405 school-aged children were assessed, using the Eating Behaviours and Body Image Test (EBBIT) to screen for EDs. The normality of the continuing variables was tested using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test with Lilliefors correction. They were described as medians and interquartile intervals (25 and 75th percentiles).Results: The criteria that represented a condition of anorexia and/or bulimia nervosa were considered as strong indicators of risk for EDs in school-aged children who indicated the following behaviors with scores superior to the 75th percentile on the scales: "compulsive eating" 3.0% (CI95% 2.2-4.0); "dissatisfaction with body image/restrictive eating" 1.3% (CI95% 0.8-2.0); children scoring superior to the 30th percentile, "compulsive eating" + "dissatisfaction with body image/restrictive eating", 0.6% (CI95% 0.3-1.2); and superior to the 50th percentile; "compensatory behavior for hyperphagia" 6.7% (CI95% 5.4-8.1). In addition, greater vulnerability of the female gender was perceived, as well as an increase in the preliminary risk factors of EDs, such as advanced age, dissatisfaction with the body image linked to restrictive behaviors and the compulsive establishment of an eating pattern.Conclusion: This study shows the dimension of the problem in this ecological context and the urgent need for intervention programs, developed among different sectors, from the perspective of the adolescents' empowerment to prevent and minimize the vulnerability factors of the eating disorders. Introduction: malnutrition in cancer patients is quite common and can cause various types of harm such as reduced tolerance to therapeutic measures and increased hospital stay. Identification of nutritional risk for these patients may minimize these problems. NUTRISCORE screening has been associated with Global Subjective Assessment Produced by Patient (ASG-PPP) screening, which is considered as the gold standard in cancer patients. No study has evaluated its predictive value in relation to weight loss and length of hospital stay in Brazil. Thus, the present study aims to analyze the NUTRISCORE tool, translated and adapted to the Brazilian population, as a predictor of longer hospital stays, as well as greater hospital weight loss. Methods: first, the NUTRISCORE tool was translated and adapted to the Brazilian population and subsequently applied to patients of both sexes, over 20 years old, admitted to the Cancer Hospital of Pernambuco. The patients were screened and classified as nutritionally "at risk" or "not at risk", their weight was measured at the time of admission and time of discharge from the hospital, and they were followed up throughout their stay to assess their weight loss and length of hospital stay. Results: one hundred and one patients participated in the study, with a higher prevalence of adults and males. The NUTRISCORE showed that patients "at nutritional risk" had a higher risk of greater weight loss (p = 0.001) and longer hospital stay (p = 0.007). Introduction: the apoB/apo A-I ratio has been reported as an important predictor of cardiovascular risk, being superior to lipids, lipoproteins and conventional lipid ratios.Objective: to investigate the association between apolipoproteins A-I and B, and the apolipoprotein B/apolipoprotein A-I ratio and cardiometabolic risk variables in adolescents.Methods: this was a cross-sectional study including 104 adolescents of public schools in Recife during the months of March/April, 2013. Sociodemographic, anthropometric, clinical and biochemical variables were analysed. The apolipoproteins were analysed via Immunoturbidimetry.Results: body mass index, waist circumference, waist circumference/height, triglycerides, cholesterol/HDL, and apolipoprotein B/apolipoprotein A-I declined with the progress of the percentile distribution of apolipoprotein A-I concentrations, while the HDL and apolipoprotein B increased between the first and last quartiles of the apolipoprotein A-I concentrations. Systolic blood pressure, body mass index, waist circumference, waist circumference/height, cholesterol, LDL, triglycerides, cholesterol/HDL, and LDL/HDL increased progressively in the quartile distribution of the concentrations of apolipoprotein B and apolipoprotein B/apolipoprotein A-I. Alfa-1-acid glycoprotein serum levels increased hand-inhand with the percentile progression of apolipoprotein B.Conclusions: the findings underline an important association of apolipoproteins A-I and B, and the apolipoprotein B/apolipoprotein A-I ratio and their clinical, biochemical and anthropometric cardiometabolic risk. OBJECTIVE: To analyze medication use and associated factors among the elderly. METHODS: A population-based cross-sectional study was carried out with a sample of 400 elderly people aged over 60 living in the urban area covered by the Family Health Strategy program in Recife, Northeastern Brazil in 2009. Individuals were selected by systematic random sampling and household data were collected. Demographic, socio-economic, lifestyle factors including nutrition practices and health variables were evaluated. Medication use was the independent variable. Univariate and multivariate statistical analysis were performed. RESULTS: The prevalence of medication use was 85.5%. Polypharmacy (> 5 drugs) occurred in 11% of cases. Of the 951 drugs reported, 98.2% were prescribed by doctors and 21.6% were considered unsafe for the elderly. The most commonly prescribed groups were: cardiovascular drugs (42.9%), central nervous system agents (20.2%) and drugs with an effect on the digestive tract and metabolism (17.3%). The use of polypharmacy was associated with education (p = 0.008), self-reported health (p = 0.012), self-reported chronic disease (p = 0.000) and the number of doctor appointments per year (0.000). CONCLUSIONS: The results of this study indicate a high proportion of medication use among the elderly, including of those considered unsuitable, and inequality among groups of elderly individuals regarding the use of medication, when education, number of doctor appointments and self-reported health are considered . Objective. To measure concentrations of serum retinol in children after the use of maternal vitamin A double megadose supplements. Design. Randomized controlled clinical trial. Setting.The study was conducted at two maternity hospitals in the city of Recife, in the northeast region of Brazil between August 2007 and June 2009. Subjects and Methods. 276 children/mothers were recruited after birth and the women received a 200,000 IU capsule of vitamin A. After ten days they were randomly assigned to two treatment groups. One group received a second 200.000 IU capsule, while the other received a placebo.The concentrations of retinol in the serumof the children fromeach group weremeasured at 2, 4, and 6months. Results. 173 children completed the study. There was no difference between the two treatment groups (P = 0.514). The mean base retinol level was lower than that at four and six months (P < 0.001). Conclusions.Thematernal doublemegadose supplement had no additional effect on the serumretinol levels of the children, although concentrations of retinol in the children rose in the first six months of life.This trial is registered with NCT00742937.
