- Abstract
PURPOSE: The Obesity and Disease Development Sweden (ODDS) study was designed to create a large cohort to study body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC) and changes in weight and WC, in relation to morbidity and mortality. PARTICIPANTS: ODDS includes 4 295 859 individuals, 2 165 048 men and 2 130 811 women, in Swedish cohorts and national registers with information on weight assessed once (2 555 098 individuals) or more (1 740 761 individuals), in total constituting 7 733 901 weight assessments at the age of 17-103 years in 1963-2020 (recalled weight as of 1911). Information on WC is available in 152 089 men and 212 658 women, out of whom 108 795 have repeated information on WC (in total 512 273 assessments). Information on morbidity and mortality was retrieved from national registers, with follow-up until the end of 2019-2021, varying between the registers. FINDINGS TO DATE: Among all weight assessments (of which 85% are objectively measured), the median year, age and BMI (IQR) is 1985 (1977-1994) in men and 2001 (1991-2010) in women, age 19 (18-40) years in men and 30 (26-36) years in women and BMI 22.9 (20.9-25.4) kg/m2 in men and 23.2 (21.2-26.1) kg/m2 in women. Normal weight (BMI 18.5-24.9 kg/m2) is present in 67% of assessments in men and 64% in women and obesity (BMI≥30 kg/m2) in 5% of assessments in men and 10% in women. The median (IQR) follow-up time from the first objectively measured or self-reported current weight assessment until emigration, death or end of follow-up is 31.4 (21.8-40.8) years in men and 19.6 (9.3-29.0) years in women. During follow-up, 283 244 men and 123 457 women died. FUTURE PLANS: The large sample size and long follow-up of the ODDS Study will provide robust results on anthropometric measures in relation to risk of common diseases and causes of deaths, and novel findings in subgroups and rarer outcomes.

- Abstract
Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the associations among the intake of total polyphenols, polyphenol classes, and polyphenol subclasses and body weight change over 5 years. Methods: A total of 349,165 men and women aged 25 to 70 years were recruited in the Physical Activity, Nutrition, Alcohol, Cessation of Smoking, Eating Out of Home and Obesity (PANACEA) project of the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) cohort from nine European countries. Body weight was measured at baseline and at follow-up after a median time of 5 years. Polyphenol intake, including four main polyphenol classes and eighteen subclasses, was estimated using validated dietary questionnaires and Phenol-Explorer. Multilevel mixed linear regression models were used to estimate the associations. Results: Participants gained, on average, 2.6 kg (±5.0 kg) over 5 years. Total flavonoids intake was inversely associated with body weight change (−0.195 kg/5 years, 95% CI: −0.262 to −0.128). However, the intake of total polyphenols (0.205 kg/5 years, 95% CI: 0.138 to 0.272) and intake of hydroxycinnamic acids (0.324 kg/5 years, 95% CI: 0.267 to 0.381) were positively associated with body weight gain. In analyses stratified by coffee consumption, hydroxycinnamic acid intake was positively associated with body weight gain in coffee consumers (0.379 kg/5 years, 95% CI: 0.319 to 0.440), but not in coffee nonconsumers (−0.179 kg/5 years, 95% CI: −0.490 to 0.133). Conclusions: Higher intakes of flavonoids and their subclasses are inversely associated with a modest body weight change. Results regarding hydroxycinnamic acids in coffee consumers require further investigation.

Hateful content online is a concern for social media platforms, policymakers, and the public. This has led high-profile content platforms, such as Facebook, to adopt algorithmic content-moderation systems; however, the impact of algorithmic moderation on user perceptions is unclear. We experimentally test the extent to which the type of content being removed (profanity vs hate speech) and the explanation given for its removal (no explanation vs link to community guidelines vs specific explanation) influence user perceptions of human and algorithmic moderators. Our preregistered study encompasses representative samples (N = 2870) from the United States, the Netherlands, and Portugal. Contrary to expectations, our findings suggest that algorithmic moderation is perceived as more transparent than human, especially when no explanation is given for content removal. In addition, sending users to community guidelines for further information on content deletion has negative effects on outcome fairness and trust. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This report presents the results of the implementation of the Media Pluralism Monitor for the year 2022 (MPM2023) in Portugal. The MPM is a holistic tool geared at assessing the risks to media pluralism in EU member states and selected candidate countries (32 European countries in total, including Albania, Montenegro, the Republic of North Macedonia, Serbia, and Turkey). The MPM takes into account legal, political and economic variables that are relevant to analysing the levels of plurality of media systems in a democratic society. The Media Pluralism Monitor has been implemented, on a regular basis, by the Centre for Media Pluralism and Media Freedom, since 2013/2014. O Media Pluralism Monitor é implementado, de forma regular, pelo Centre for Media Pluralism and Media Freedom, desde 2013/2014. The Centre for Media Pluralism and Media Freedom is co-financed by the European Union

- Abstract
Polyphenols are bioactive compounds from plants with antioxidant properties that may have a protective role against body weight gain, with adipose tissue and systemic oxidative stress as potential targets. We aimed to investigate the dietary intake of individual polyphenols and their association with 5-year body weight change in a sub-cohort of the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC). This study included 349,165 adult participants from nine European countries. Polyphenol intake was estimated through country-specific validated dietary questionnaires and the Phenol-Explorer database. Body weight was obtained at recruitment and after a mean follow-up time of 5 years. Associations were estimated using multilevel mixed linear regression models. From 91 polyphenols included, the majority (n = 67) were inversely associated with 5-year body weight change after FDR-correction (q < 0.05). The greatest inverse associations were observed for quercetin 3-O-rhamnoside (change in weight for doubling in intake: −0.071 (95% CI: −0.085; −0.056) kg/5 years). Only 13 polyphenols showed positive associations with body weight gain, mainly from the subclass hydroxycinnamic acids (HCAs) with coffee as the main dietary source, such as 4-caffeoylquinic acid (0.029 (95% CI: 0.021; 0.038) kg/5 years). Individual polyphenols with fruit, tea, cocoa and whole grain cereals as the main dietary sources may contribute to body weight maintenance in adults. Individual HCAs may have different roles in body weight change depending on their dietary source., PANACEA

The stereotype of the Latin woman is commonly associated with sexuality. Brazilians seem to be particularly burdened by this stigma among Latin women worldwide. As immigrants, intersected by other matrices of oppression in addition to those of gender and race, for example, these women bear various marks remaining from Eurocentric coloniality that belittles and silences them (Mignolo, 2000/2003), a circumstance that is aggravated when the country of emigration is their coloniser. This article explores resorting to cyberspace as a forum for denunciation and feminist activism through a case study of the profile @brasileirasnaosecalam based on content analysis. The project appeared on the digital social network Instagram to anonymously report the harassment, discrimination and prejudice that Brazilian immigrant women suffer in Portugal, specifically for carrying their own nationality. Thus, through cyberactivism, which is also feminist activism, women are now experiencing a new cycle of political opportunities driven by the building and consolidation of ties among them around the globe, breaking down binarisms, including those between the first and the third world, in an appeal to cross-border articulation (Timeto, 2019). That shows the relevance of pursuing an ontological vision underpinned by a decolonial and intersectional feminist perspective that uses cyberfeminism as an ally to interconnect the digital and the real space. publishersversion published

This report presents the results of the implementation of the Media Pluralism Monitor for the year 2021 (MPM2022) in Portugal. The Centre for Media Pluralism and Media Freedom is co-financed by the European Union

UIDB/05021/2020 UIDP/05021/2020 Hateful content online is a concern for social media platforms, policymakers, and the public. In addition, sending users to community guidelines for further information on content deletion has negative effects on outcome fairness and trust. publishersversion epub_ahead_of_print

This study investigates to what extent specific features of news articles about election campaigns impact reader engagement and civility in news comments. Using content analysis of articles (N = 830) and comments (N = 29,421) published during the 2015 Portuguese Legislative elections, we test the impact of negative coverage, issue coverage and game coverage (politics as a game) on the number of comments that an article receives and the level of civility thereof. Additionally, we explore how affective polarisation of a commenter may moderate the effects on incivility. Findings show that negativity towards political actors in an article is tied to both an increase in the number of comments and their level of incivility. Game coverage only led to a significant increase in the number of comments, while actor-related positivity was also related to an increase in incivility. Issue coverage had neither positive nor negative effects. The results inform newsrooms and academics about the implications of different types of election reporting, while accounting for features of news articles that are typically not integrated in a single study. This article deals with the popular contemporary television narrative from an analysis of the daily talk show presented by Cristina Ferreira on the SIC channel until July 17th 2020. The success of Cristina's Program is framed from a historical point of view, establishing continuity with the work of Nelson Traquina, Big Show Media (1997). Cristina Ferreira is a celebrity of popular Portuguese television and builds in her show a gender performance grounded in the paradoxical logic of post-feminism. Her versatility is visible in the transversality of the dissemination strategy of the TV program on social networks, namely in Instagram and Facebook, where the audiences are broadened through the instrumental mobilization of other digital influencers. publishersversion published

The project "Fair or Flawed" aims to fill a gap in current research on how harmful and offensive content moderation practices are perceived by users. Through experimental research we gain insights into how different types of moderators, moderation messages and user appeals impact the perception of moderation. We conduct this research in three countries (the Netherlands, Portugal, USA) and compare results across these different national contexts. Such a comparative perspective is relevant because of different approaches to hate speech and freedom of expression, particularly between the US and European countries. This is the second study of the project "Fair or Flawed" and it focuses on user appeals against moderation. The main question we aim to answer is whether an appeal affects how internet users perceive the removal of a post containing hate speech against a specific vulnerable group. Furthermore, we aim to find out how such an appeal may lead internet users to perceive moderation as unfair, illegitimate and biased (even though they may not tolerate hate speech per se). To approach this issue, we consider both the arguments used in the appeal against moderation as well as the impression users have of the person authoring a hate speech post and an appeal as influential factors. In a between-subjects online survey experiment we manipulate the appeal by using commonly employed arguments framing moderation as an overzealous exercise of political correctness (limitation of free speech vs political persecution vs control condition no appeal) and the gender of the author (male vs female). We expect that both of these factors play out differently across national contexts. The outcomes of the project will contribute to a better understanding of the mechanisms by which moderation is sometimes perceived as unfair or even exploited by people disseminating hate speech. The findings may also result in guidelines for moderators to improve user perceptions of moderation practices.

Background: The obesity prevalence has reached pandemic dimensions. The cancer incidence has also increased worldwide, and several cancers are related to body fatness. However, there are uncertainties weather the velocity and magnitude of weight gain, independent of body fatness, increase cancer risk. Moreover, there are few studies on short-term weight gain and site-specific cancers. Thus, our aim was to study weight change over 6–7 years in relation to all and specific body fatness-related cancers in women in Norway. Methods: We used Cox proportional hazard models and restricted cubic splines to assess weight change and subsequent cancer incidence, in the Norwegian Women and Cancer Study. Further, we calculated population attributable fractions to assess the impact of weight gain on the body fatness-related cancer burden. Results: Short-term weight gain, independent of body weight status, was associated with increased risk of all body fatness-related cancers combined, and several site-specific cancers, in a non-linear dose-response manner. Women who gained more than 10kg had a two-fold increased risk of pancreatic cancer. Moreover, stable weight could have prevented 43% of pancreatic cancers cases in women in Norway diagnosed in 1998–2015, as well as 4299 postmenopausal breast cancer cases and 2798 colorectal cancer cases. Conclusions: Avoiding weight gain has important implications for public health interventions, as several cancers seem to be preventable through weight maintenance. Our results on pancreatic cancer are novel and of upmost importance given the poor prognosis of the disease and increased rate in women, both in Norway and worldwide.
