We investigate the role of \emph{interlayer} interaction terms in the competition between different superconducting gap symmetries in the bilayer nickelate $\text{La}_3\text{Ni}_2\text{O}_7$ under high pressure. We study a two-layer, two-orbital electron model that encompasses both intra- and interlayer Coulomb interaction terms within the matrix random-phase approximation. We find that interlayer interactions favor a $d_{xy}$-wave superconducting pairing symmetry over the $s^{\pm}$-wave symmetry, which has been found to prevail when interlayer interactions are disregarded. Moreover, our findings indicate that interlayer interactions enhance the interorbital pairing, incorporating contributions from all three electron pockets, arising from both $d_{3z^2-r^2}$ and $d_{x^2-y^2}$ orbital character, resulting in nodes within the gap function (not present in the $s^{\pm}$-wave state) and consequently favoring the $d_{xy}$-wave pairing., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures + Supp. Material

We explore the phase diagram of the Mott metal-insulator transition (MIT), focusing on the effects of particle-hole asymmetry (PHA) in the single-band Hubbard model. Our dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) study reveals that the introduction of PHA in the model significantly influences the critical temperature ($T_c$) and interaction strength ($U_c$), as well as the size of the co-existence region of metallic and insulating phases at low temperatures. Specifically, as the system is moved away from particle-hole symmetry, $T_c$ decreases and $U_c$ increases, indicating a suppression of the insulating phase and the strengthening of the metallic behavior. Additionally, the first-order transition line between metallic and insulating phases is better defined in the model with PHA, leading to a reduced co-existence region at $T

Multiband superconductors have featured one of the main challenges to achieve a comprehensive understanding of unconventional superconductivity. Here, the multiband character is studied separately as orbital and sublattice degrees of freedom, as they have different effects for the superconducting and magnetic or charge orders. We build on the framework of the matrix random-phase approximation (RPA), which accounts for the RPA Feynman diagrams and also vertex corrections, to treat the electron-electron interactions in an off-site degenerate Hubbard model. As a result, systems without a sublattice degree of freedom tend to be dominated by spin fluctuations, while systems with multiple sublattice sites and orbitals have the charge fluctuations favored. Finally, we explicitly demonstrate that the known suppression of the superconducting pairing strength $\lambda$ by spin fluctuations from repulsive interactions at zero momentum transfer $\boldsymbol{q}$ is countered by the finite-$\boldsymbol{q}$ pairing, which always improves $\lambda$., Comment: 10 + 6 pages, 2 figures

Magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (MATBG) has been extensively explored both theoretically and experimentally as a suitable platform for a rich and tunable phase diagram that includes ferromagnetism, charge order, broken symmetries, and unconventional superconductivity. In this work, we investigate the intricate interplay between long-range electron-electron interactions, spin fluctuations, and superconductivity in MATBG. By employing a low-energy model for MATBG that captures the correct shape of the flat bands, we explore the effects of short- and long-range interactions on spin fluctuations and their impact on the superconducting (SC) pairing vertex in the Random Phase Approximation (RPA). We find that the SC state is notably influenced by the strength of long-range Coulomb interactions. Interestingly, our RPA calculations indicate that there is a regime where the system can traverse from a magnetic phase to the SC phase by \emph{increasing} the relative strength of long-range interactions compared to the on-site ones. These findings underscore the relevance of electron-electron interactions in shaping the intriguing properties of MATBG and offer a pathway for designing and controlling its SC phase., Comment: Revised and expanded version. 11 pages, 7 figures

We propose a method to distinguish between trivial and topological, Majorana, zero-energy states in both short and long superconductor-normal-superconductor junctions based on Rashba nanowires using phase-biased equilibrium transport measurements. In particular, we show how the sawtooth profile of the supercurrent, due to the Majorana oscillation suppression in the topological phase for sufficiently long superconductor regions, leads to a strong signal in its zero-frequency susceptibility for a phase difference of $\phi=\pi$. This signal is notably insensitive to the chemical potential in the normal region, while trivial zero-energy states only causes signals in the susceptibility that is highly varying with the chemical potential, thus turning gating of the normal region into a simple experimental control knob. Furthermore, we obtain that, by tuning the junction transparency, critical currents in both short and long junctions undergo a reduction in the number of oscillations as a function of magnetic field only in the topological phase, an effect that find to be intimately linked to Majorana non-locality. Finally, we show that our results also hold at finite temperatures, thus highlighting their potential measurability under realistic experimental conditions., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures. Parafermion bound states (PBSs) are generalizations of Majorana bound states (MBSs) and have been predicted to exist as zero-energy eigenstates in proximitized fractional quantum Hall edge states. Similarly to MBSs, a finite distance between the PBS can split the ground state degeneracy. However, parafermionic modes have a richer exchange statistics than MBSs, so several interaction terms are allowed by the underlying $\mathbb{Z}_{2n}$ symmetry, rendering the effective Hamiltonian governing a pair of PBSs at a finite distance nontrivial. Here, we use a combination of analytical techniques (semiclassical instanton approximation) and numerical techniques (quantum Monte Carlo simulations) to determine the effective coupling Hamiltonian. For this purpose, we go beyond the dilute one-instanton gas approximation and show how finite-size effects can give rise to higher-order parafermion interactions. We find excellent agreement between the analytical results and Monte Carlo simulations. We estimate that these finite-size corrections should be observable in some of the recently proposed experiments to observe PBSs in strongly correlated systems., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

Caroli-de Gennes-Matricon (CdGM) states are localized states with a discrete energy spectrum bound to the core of vortices in superconductors. In topological superconductors, CdGM states are predicted to coexist with zero-energy, chargeless states widely known as Majorana zero modes (MZMs). Due to their energy difference, current experiments rely on scanning tunneling spectroscopy methods to distinguish between them. This work shows that electrostatic inhomogeneities can push trivial CdGM states arbitrarily close to zero energy in non-topological systems where no MZM is present. Furthermore, the BCS charge of CdGM states is suppressed under the same mechanism. Through exploration of the impurity parameter space, we establish that these two phenomena generally happen in consonance. Our results show that energy and charge shifts in CdGM may be enough to imitate the spectroscopic signatures of MZMs even in cases where the estimated CdGM level spacing (in the absence of impurities) is much larger than the typical experimental level broadening., Comment: Revised and expanded version. 8 pages, 5 figures

Parafermions modes are non-Abelian anyons which were introduced as $\mathbb{Z}_N$ generalizations of $\mathbb{Z}_2$ Majorana states. In particular, $\mathbb{Z}_3$ parafermions can be used to produce Fibonacci anyons, laying a path towards universal topological quantum computation. Due to their fractional nature, much of theoretical work on $\mathbb{Z}_3$ parafermions has relied on bosonization methods or parafermionic quasi-particles. In this work, we introduce a representation of $\mathbb{Z}_3$ parafermions in terms of purely fermionic models operators in the t-J regime. We establish the equivalency of a family of lattice fermionic models written in the $t-J$ model basis with a Kitaev-like chain supporting free $\mathbb{Z}_3$ parafermonic modes at its ends. By using density matrix renormalization group calculations, we are able to characterize the topological phase transition and study the effect of local operators (doping and magnetic fields) on the spatial localization of the parafermionic modes and their stability. Inverted-gap GaSb/InAs quantum wells have long been predicted to show quantum spin Hall insulator (QSHI) behavior. The experimental characterization of the QSHI phase in these systems has relied on the presence of quantized edge transport near charge neutrality. However, experimental data showing the presence of edge conductance in the \emph{trivial} regime suggest that additional experimental signatures are needed to characterize the QSHI phase. Here we show that electric field- induced gap oscillations can be used as an indicator of the presence of helical edge states in system. By studying a realistic low-energy model GaSb/InAs quantum wells derived from $k \cdot p$ band theory, we show that such oscillations are bound to appear in narrow samples as the system is driven to the the the topological phase by the electric field. Our results can serve as a guide for the search of additional experimental signatures of the presence of topologically-protected helical edge states in GaSb/InAs systems., Comment: 9 pages, 9 figures

Parafermionic zero modes, $\mathbb{Z}_n$-symmetric generalizations of the well-known $\mathbb{Z}_2$ Majorana zero modes, can emerge as edge states in topologically nontrivial strongly correlated systems displaying fractionalized excitations. In this paper, we investigate how signatures of parafermionic zero modes can be detected by its effects on the properties of a quantum dot tunnel-coupled to a system hosting such states. Concretely, we consider a strongly-correlated 1D fermionic model supporting $\mathbb{Z}_4$ parafermionic zero modes coupled to an interacting quantum dot at one of its ends. By using a combination of density matrix renormalization group calculations and analytical approaches, we show that the dot's zero-energy spectral function and average occupation numbers can be used to distinguish between trivial, $\mathbb{Z}_4$ and $2\times \mathbb{Z}_2$ phases of the system. The most promising mechanisms for the formation of Majorana bound states (MBSs) in condensed matter systems involve one-dimensional systems (such as semiconductor nanowires, magnetic chains, and quantum spin Hall insulator (QSHI) edges) proximitized to superconducting materials. The choice between each of these options involves trade-offs between several factors such as reproducibility of results, system tunability, and robustness of the resulting MBS. In this article, we propose that a combination of two of these systems, namely a magnetic chain deposited on a QSHI edge in contact with a superconducting surface, offers a better choice of tunability and MBS robustness compared to magnetic chain deposited on bulk. We study how the QSHI edge interacts with the magnetic chain, and see how the topological phase is affected by edge proximity. We show that MBSs near the edge can be realized with lower chemical potential and Zeeman field than the ones inside the bulk, independently of the chain's magnetic order (ferromagnetic or spiral order). Different magnetic orderings in the chain modify the overall phase diagram, even suppressing the boundless topological phase found in the bulk for chains located at the QSHI edge. Moreover, we quantify the "quality" of MBSs by calculating the Majorana Polarization (MP) for different configurations. For chains located at the edge, the MP is close to its maximum value already for short chains. For chains located away from the edge, longer chains are needed to attain the same quality as chains located at the edge. The MP also oscillates in phase with the in-gap states, which is relatively unexpected as peaks in the energy spectrum corresponds to stronger overlap of MBSs., Comment: Published version

We study the single impurity Anderson model (SIAM) using the equations of motion method (EOM), the non-crossing approximation (NCA), the one-crossing approximation (OCA), and Wilson's numerical renormalization group (NRG). We calculate the density of states and the linear conductance focusing on their dependence on the chemical potential and on the temperature paying special attention to the Kondo and Coulomb blockade regimes for a large range of model parameters. We report that some standard approximations based on the EOM technique display a rather unexpected poor behavior in the Coulomb blockade regime even at high temperatures. Our study offers a critical comparison between the different methods as well as a detailed compilation of the shortcomings and limitations due the approximations involved in each technique, thus allowing for a cost-benefit analysis of the different solvers that considers both numerical precision and computational performance.

The prospect of using semiconductor quantum dots as an experimental tool to distinguish Majorana zero modes (MZMs) from other zero-energy excitations such as Kondo resonances has brought up the fundamental question of whether topological superconductivity and the Kondo effect can coexist in these systems. Here, we study the Kondo effect in a quantum dot coupled to a metallic contact and to a pair of MZMs. We consider a situation in which the MBS are spin polarized in opposite directions. By using numerical renormalization-group calculations and scaling analysis of the renormalization group equations, we show that the Kondo effect takes place at low temperatures, regardless the coupling to the MZMs. Interestingly, we find that the Kondo singlet essentially decouples from the MZMs such that the residual impurity entropy can show local non-Fermi liquid properties characteristic of the single Majorana excitations. This offers the possibility of tuning between Fermi-liquid and non-Fermi-liquid regimes simply by changing the quantum dot-MZM couplings., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures

Majorana zero modes (MZMs) emerging at the edges of topological superconducting wires have been proposed as the building blocks of novel, fault-tolerant quantum computation protocols. Coherent detection and manipulation of such states in scalable devices are, therefore, essential in these applications. Recent detection proposals include semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) coupled to the end of these wires, as changes in the QD electronic spectral density due to the MZM coupling could be detected in transport experiments. Here, we propose that multi-QD systems can also be used to manipulate MZMs through precise control over the QDs' parameters. The simplest case where Majorana manipulation is possible is in a double quantum dot (DQD) geometry. By using exact analytical methods and numerical renormalization-group calculations, we show that the QDs' spectral functions can be used to characterize the presence or not of MZMs "leaking" into the DQD. More importantly, we find that these signatures respond to changes in the DQD parameters such as gate-voltages and couplings in a consistent fashion. Additionally, we show that different MZM-DQD coupling geometries ("symmetric" , "in-series" and "T-shaped" junctions) offer distinct ways in which MZMs can be switched from dot to dot. Magnetic chains on superconducting systems have emerged as a platform for realization of Majorana bound states (MBSs) in condensed matter systems with possible applications to topological quantum computation. In this work we study the MBSs formed in magnetic chains on two-dimensional honeycomb materials with induced superconductivity. We establish phase diagrams showing the topological regions (where MBSs appear), which are strongly dependent on the spiral angle along the chain of the magnetic moments. In particular, find large regions where the topological phase is robust even at large values of the local Zeeman field, thus producing topological regions without an upper bound. Moreover, we show that the energy oscillations of the MBSs can show very different behavior with magnetic field strength. In some parameter regimes we find increasing oscillations amplitudes and decreasing periods, while in the other regimes the complete opposite behavior is found with increasing magnetic field strength. We also find that the topological phase can become dependent on the chain length, particularly in topological regions with a very high or no upper bound. In these systems we see a very smooth evolution from MBSs localized at chain end points to in-gap Andreev bound states spread over the full chain., Comment: Published version

The impact of superconducting correlations on localized electronic states is important for a wide range of experiments in fundamental and applied superconductivity (SC). This includes scanning tunneling microscopy of atomic impurities at the surface of superconductors, as well as superconducting-ion-chip spectroscopy of neutral ions and Rydberg states. Moreover, atom-like centers close to the surface are currently believed to be the main source of noise and decoherence in qubits based on superconducting devices. The proximity effect is known to dress atomic orbitals in Cooper-pair-like states known as Yu-Shiba-Rusinov states (YSR), but the impact of SC on the measured orbital splittings and optical/noise transitions is not known. Here we study the interplay between orbital degenerescence and particle number admixture in atomic states, beyond the usual classical spin approximation. We model the atom as a generalized Anderson model interacting with a conventional $s$-wave superconductor. In the limit of zero on-site Coulomb repulsion ($U=0$), we obtain YSR subgap energy levels that are identical to the ones obtained from the classical spin model. When $\Delta$ is large and $U>0$, the YSR spectra is no longer quasiparticle-like, and the highly degenerate orbital subspaces are split according to their spin, orbital, and number-parity symmetry. We show that $U>0$ activates additional poles in the atomic Green's function, suggesting an alternative explanation for the peak splittings recently observed in scanning tunneling microscopy of orbitally-degenerate impurities in superconductors. We describe optical excitation and absorption of photons by YSR states, showing that many additional optical channels open up in comparison to the non-superconducting case. Inverted HgTe/CdTe quantum wells have been used as a platform for the realization of 2D topological insulators, bulk insulator materials with spin-helical metallic edges states protected by time-reversal symmetry. This work investigates the spectrum and the charge transport in HgTe/CdTe quantum well junctions both in the topological regime and in the absence of time-reversal symmetry. We model the system using the BHZ effective Hamiltonian and compute the transport properties using recursive Green's functions with a finite differences' method. Specifically, we have studied the material's spatially-resolved conductance in a set-up with a gated central region, forming monopolar (n-n$^{\prime}$-n) and heteropolar (n-p-n, n-TI-n) double junctions, which have been recently realized in experiments. We find regimes in which the edge states carry spin-polarized currents in the central region even in the presence of a small magnetic field, which breaks TRS. More interestingly, the conductance displays spin-dependent, Fabry-Per\'ot-like oscillations as a function of the central gate voltage producing tunable, fully spin-polarized currents through the device., Comment: 9 pages, 12 figures

The transport properties of nanostructured systems are deeply affected by the geometry of the effective connections to metallic leads. In this work we derive a conductance expression for interacting systems whose connectivity geometries do not meet the Meir-Wingreen proportional coupling condition. As an interesting application, we consider a quantum dot connected coherently to tunable electronic cavity modes. The structure is shown to exhibit a well-defined Kondo effect over a wide range of coupling strengths between the two subsystems. In agreement with recent experimental results, the calculated conductance curves exhibit strong modulations and asymmetric behavior as different cavity modes are swept through the Fermi level. Localized magnetic moments have been predicted to develop in graphene samples with vacancies or adsorbates. The interplay between such magnetic impurities and graphene's Dirac quasiparticles leads to remarkable many-body phenomena, which have so far proved elusive to experimental efforts. In this article, we study the thermodynamic, spectral and transport signatures of quantum criticality and Kondo physics of a dilute ensemble of atomic impurities in graphene. We consider vacancies and adatoms that either break or preserve graphene's $C_{3v}$ and inversion symmetries. In a neutral graphene sample, all cases display symmetry-dependent quantum criticality, leading to enhanced impurity scattering for asymmetric impurities, in a manner analogous to bound-state formation by nonmagnetic resonant scatterers. Kondo correlations emerge only in the presence of a back gate, with estimated Kondo temperatures well within the experimentally accessible domain for all impurity types. For symmetry-breaking impurities at charge neutrality, quantum criticality is signaled by $T^{-2}$ resistivity scaling, leading to full insulating behavior at low temperatures, while low-temperature resistivity plateaus appear both in the non-critical and Kondo regimes. By contrast, the resitivity contribution from symmetric vacancies and hollow-site adsorbates vanishes at charge neutrality and for arbitrary back gate voltages, respectively. We study the effects of a low concentration of adatoms or single vacancies in the linear-response transport properties of otherwise clean graphene. These impurities were treated as localized orbitals, and for each type two cases with distinct coupling symmetries were studied. For adatoms, we considered top- and hollow-site adsorbates (TOP and HS). For vacancies, we studied impurity formation by soft bond reconstruction (REC), as well as the more symmetric case of charge accumulation in unreconstructed vacancies (VAC). Our results indicate that the transport is determined by usual impurity scattering when the graphene-impurity coupling does not possess $C_{3v}$ symmetry (TOP and REC). In contrast, VAC impurities decouple from the electronic states at the Dirac points, and yield no contribution to the resistivity for a sample in charge neutrality. Furthermore, the inversion-symmetry-conserving HS impurities also decouple from entire sets of momenta throughout the Brillouin zone, and do not contribute to the resistivity within a broad range of parameters. Vacancies in graphene have been proposed to give rise to $\pi$-like magnetism in carbon materials, a conjecture which has been supported by recent experimental evidence. A key element in this "vacancy magnetism" is the formation of magnetic moments in vacancy-induced electronic states. In this work we compute the charging energy $U$ of a single-vacancy generated localized state for bulk graphene and graphene ribbons. We use a tight-binding model to calculate the dependency of the charging energy $U$ on the amplitudes of the localized wave function on the graphene lattice sites. We show that for bulk graphene $U$ scales with the system size $L$ as $(\ln L)^{-2}$, confirming the predictions in the literature, based on heuristic arguments. In contrast, we find that for realistic system sizes $U$ is of the order of eV, a value that is orders of magnitude higher than the previously reported estimates. Finally, when edges are considered, we show that $U$ is very sensitive to the vacancy position with respect to the graphene flake boundaries. In the case of armchair nanoribbons, we find a strong enhancement of $U$ in certain vacancy positions as compared to the value for vacancies in bulk graphene., Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures

Magnetic and charge noise have common microscopic origin in solid state devices, as described by a universal electron trap model. In spite of this common origin, magnetic (spin) and charge noise spectral densities display remarkably different behaviours when many-particle correlations are taken into account, leading to the emergence of the Kondo effect. Our numerical renormalization group results indicate that while spin noise is a universal function of the Kondo temperature, charge noise remains well described by single-particle theory even when the trap is deep in the Kondo regime. This difference survives even in the presence of disorder, showing that noise can be more manageable in devices that are sensitive to magnetic (rather than charge) fluctuations and that the signature of the Kondo effect can be observed in spin noise spectroscopy experiments., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures; To appear in PRB. We have recently shown [Phys. Rev. B {\bf 89}, 165314 (2014)] that a non--interacting quantum dot coupled to a one--dimensional topological superconductor and to normal leads can sustain a Majorana mode even when the dot is expected to be empty, \emph{i.e.}, when the dot energy level is far above the Fermi level of he leads. This is due to the Majorana bound state of the wire leaking into the quantum dot. Here we extend this previous work by investigating the low--temperature quantum transport through an {\it interacting} quantum dot connected to source and drain leads and side--coupled to a topological wire. We explore the signatures of a Majorana zero--mode leaking into the quantum dot for a wide range of dot parameters, using a recursive Green's function approach. We then study the Kondo regime using numerical renormalization group calculations. We observe the interplay between the Majorana mode and the Kondo effect for different dot-wire coupling strengths, gate voltages and Zeeman fields. Our results show that a "0.5" conductance signature appears in the dot despite the interplay between the leaked Majorana mode and the Kondo effect. This robust feature persists for a wide range of dot parameters, even when the Kondo correlations are suppressed by Zeeman fields and/or gate voltages. The Kondo effect, on the other hand, is suppressed by both Zeeman fields and gate voltages. We show that the zero--bias conductance as a function of the magnetic field follows a well--known universality curve. This can be measured experimentally, and we propose that the universal conductance drop followed by a persistent conductance of $0.5\,e^2/h$ is evidence of the presence of Majorana--Kondo physics. These results confirm that this "0.5" Majorana signature in the dot remains even in the presence of the Kondo effect., Comment: 19 pages, 12 figures

We study the emergence of strongly correlated states and Kondo physics in disordered graphene. Diluted short range disorder gives rise to localized midgap states at the vicinity of the system charge neutrality point. We show that long-range disorder, ubiquitous in graphene, allows for the coupling of these localized states to an effective (disorder averaged) metallic band. The system is described by an Anderson-like model. We use the numerical renormalization group (NRG) method to study the distributions of Kondo temperatures $P(T_K)$. The results show that disorder can lead to long logarithmic tails in $P(T_K)$, consistent with a quantum Griffiths phase., Comment: Published version + Supp. Material

We study the effect of an external magnetic field in the Kondo regime of a double-quantum-dot system in which a strongly correlated dot (the "hanging dot") is coupled to a second, noninteracting dot that also bridges the gap between two external leads. In zero field, the spectral function of the hanging dot has previously been shown to exhibit a split-peak structure near the Fermi level due to "Kondo resonance filtering" by the bridging dot. We show using the numerical renormalization group that application of a magnetic field leads to a subtle interplay between electronic interference, Kondo physics, and Zeeman splitting with nontrivial consequences for the spectral and transport properties. The value of the hanging-dot spectral function at the Fermi level exhibits a nonuniversal field dependence that can be explained using a generalized Friedel sum rule for a Kondo system with energy-dependent hybridization. The magnetic field also accentuates the exchange-mediated interdot coupling, which dominates the ground state at intermediate fields leading to the formation of antiparallel magnetic moments on the dots. By tuning gate voltages and the magnetic field, one can achieve complete spin polarization of the linear conductance between the leads, raising the prospect of applications of the device as a highly tunable spin filter. The dynamics of holon-doublon pairs is studied in Hubbard two-leg ladders using the time-dependent Density Matrix Renormalization Group method. We find that the geometry of the two-leg ladder, that is qualitatively different from a one-dimensional chain due to the presence of a spin-gap, strongly affects the propagation of a doublon-holon pair. Two distinct regimes are identified. For weak inter-leg coupling, the results are qualitatively similar to the case of the propagation previously reported in Hubbard chains, with only a renormalization of parameters. More interesting is the case of strong inter-leg coupling where substantial differences arise, particularly regarding the double occupancy and properties of the excitations such as the doublon speed. We study a strongly interacting "quantum dot 1" and a weakly interacting "dot 2" connected in parallel to metallic leads. Gate voltages can drive the system between Kondo-quenched and non-Kondo free-moment phases separated by Kosterlitz-Thouless quantum phase transitions. Away from the immediate vicinity of the quantum phase transitions, the physical properties retain signatures of first-order transitions found previously to arise when dot 2 is strictly noninteracting. As interactions in dot 2 become stronger relative to the dot-lead coupling, the free moment in the non-Kondo phase evolves smoothly from an isolated spin-one-half in dot 1 to a many-body doublet arising from the incomplete Kondo compensation by the leads of a combined dot spin-one. Charge excitations in Mott insulators (MIs) are distinct from their band-insulator counterparts and they can provide a mechanism for energy harvesting in solar cells based on strongly correlated electronic materials. In this paper, we study the real-time dynamics of holon-doublon pairs in a MI connected to metallic leads using the time-dependent density matrix renormalization group method. The transfer of charge across the MI-metal interface is controlled by both the electron-electron interaction strength within the MI and the voltage difference between the leads. We find an overall enhancement of the charge transfer as compared to the case of a (noninteracting) band insulator-metal interface with a similar band gap. We use a combination of first principles many-body methods and the numerical renormalization-group technique to study the Kondo regime of cobalt-porphyrin compounds adsorbed on a Cu(111) surface. We find the Kondo temperature to be highly sensitive to both molecule charging and distance to the surface, which can explain the variations observed in recent scanning tunneling spectroscopy measurements. We discuss the importance of many-body effects in the molecular electronic structure controlling this phenomenon and suggest scenarios where enhanced temperatures can be achieved in experiments., Comment: To appear in Phys. The interplay between vibrational modes and Kondo physics is a fundamental aspect of transport properties of correlated molecular conductors. We present theoretical results for a single molecule in the Kondo regime connected to left and right metallic leads, creating the usual coupling to a conduction channel with left-right parity ("even"). A center-of-mass vibrational mode introduces an additional, phonon-assisted, tunneling through the antisymmetric ("odd") channel. A non-Fermi liquid fixed point, reminiscent of the two-channel Kondo effect, appears at a critical value of the phonon-mediated coupling strength. Our numerical renormalization-group calculations for this system reveal non-Fermi-liquid behavior at low temperatures over lines of critical points. We study two quantum dots embedded in the arms of an Aharonov-Bohm ring threaded by a magnetic flux. The system can be described by an effective one-impurity Anderson model with an energy- and flux-dependent density of states. For specific values of the flux, this density of states vanishes at the Fermi energy, yielding a controlled realization of the pseudogap Kondo effect. The conductance and transmission phase shifts reflect a nontrivial interplay between wave interference and interactions, providing clear signatures of quantum phase transitions between Kondo and non-Kondo ground states., Comment: Published version

We apply the adaptive time-dependent Density Matrix Renormalization Group method (tDMRG) to the study of transport properties of quantum-dot systems connected to metallic leads. Finite-size effects make the usual tDMRG description of the Kondo regime a numerically demanding task. We show that such effects can be attenuated by describing the leads by "Wilson chains", in which the hopping matrix elements decay exponentially away from the impurity ($t_n \propto \Lambda^{-n/2}$). For a given system size and in the linear response regime, results for $\Lambda > 1$ show several improvements over the undamped, $\Lambda=1$ case: perfect conductance is obtained deeper in the strongly interacting regime and current plateaus remain well defined for longer time scales. Similar improvements were obtained in the finite-bias regime up to bias voltages of the order of the Kondo temperature. These results show that, with the proposed modification, the tDMRG characterization of Kondo correlations in the transport properties can be substantially improved, while it turns out to be sufficient to work with much smaller system sizes. We study the linear conductance through a double-quantum-dot system consisting of an interacting dot in its Kondo regime and an effectively noninteracting dot, connected in parallel to metallic leads. Signatures in the zero-bias conductance at temperatures $T>0$ mark a pair of quantum (T=0) phase transitions between a Kondo-screened many-body ground state and non-Kondo ground states. We study the transmission through a double quantum-dot system in the Kondo regime. An exact expression for the transmission coefficient in terms of fully interacting many-body Green's functions is obtained. By mapping the system into an effective Anderson impurity model, one can determine the transmission using numerical renormalization-group methods. We study interaction and radial polarization effects on the the absorption spectrum of neutral bound magnetoexcitons confined in quantum-ring structures. We show that the size and orientation of the exciton's dipole moment, as well as the interaction screening, play important roles in the Aharonov-Bohm oscillations. In particular, the excitonic absorption peaks display A-B oscillations both in position and amplitude for weak electron-hole interaction and large radial polarization. The presence of impurity scattering induces anticrossings in the exciton spectrum, leading to a modulation in the absorption strength. We study electron-electron interaction effects in the thermodynamic properties of quantum-dot systems. We obtain the direct and exchange contributions to the specific heat C_v in the self-consistent Hartree-Fock approximation at finite temperatures. An exchange-induced phase transition is observed and the transition temperature is shown to be inversely proportional to the size of the system. The exchange contribution to C_v dominates over the direct and kinetic contributions in the intermediate regime of interaction strength (r_s ~ 1). We study the role of impurity scattering on the photoluminescence (PL) emission of polarized magnetoexcitons. We consider systems where both the electron and hole are confined on a ring structure (quantum rings) as well as on a type-II quantum dot. Despite their neutral character, excitons exhibit strong modulation of energy and oscillator strength in the presence of magnetic fields. Scattering impurities enhance the PL intensity on otherwise "dark" magnetic field windows and non-zero PL emission appears for a wide magnetic field range even at zero temperature. For higher temperatures, impurity-induced anticrossings on the excitonic spectrum lead to unexpected peaks and valleys on the PL intensity as function of magnetic field.
