Whereas individuals have little direct influence on the former, they can play a key role on the latter. This paper describes the subject matter of sustainable consumption and outlines its key features. It also describes some international initiatives in this field. Results: By means of an international survey, the study explores the emphasis given to sustainable consumption during the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the degree of preparedness in individuals to engage in the purchase of green and sustainably manufactured products. The main results indicate that the pandemic offered an opportunity to promote sustainable consumption; nevertheless, the pandemic alone cannot be regarded as a ‘game changer’ in this topic. Conclusions: Apart from an online survey with responses from 31 countries, which makes it one of the most representative studies on the topic, a logit model was used to analyse the main variables that affect the probability of pro-environmental consumption behaviour because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The paper lists some of the technological and social innovations that may be needed, so as to guide more sustainable consumption patterns in a post-pandemic world. publishersversion published

Abstract

Um dos principais problemas ambientais decorrentes do atual processo de urbanização é a geração excessiva de lixo residencial e seu descarte inadequado. O presente estudo analisa os condicionantes socioeconômicos e demográficos que influenciam a forma pela qual o lixo é descartado nos domicílios das metrópoles brasileiras, por meio do modelo Logit Multinomial, a partir dos dados da Pesquisa Nacional por Amostra de Domicílios-PNAD. Os principais resultados da pesquisa sugerem que os limites superiores de educação (ensino médio, superior e pós-graduação) reduzem a probabilidade de descarte incorreto do lixo. Outros mitigadores do descarte incorreto do lixo são a renda, gênero e uso da internet. Ademais, o nível de instrução do chefe da família e se o chefe da família é mulher refletem-se nas atitudes dos demais moradores dos domicílios. Esses resultados apontam a necessidade de expandir políticas educacionais, inclusive de educação ambiental, as quais podem promover externalidades positivas e podem contribuir com a disseminação do comportamento pró-ambiental. One of the main environmental problems resulting from the current urbanization process is the excessive generation of residential waste and its inadequate disposal. The present study analyzes the socioeconomic and demographic conditions that influence the way in which waste is disposed of in Brazilian metropolis households, using the Logit Multinomial model, based on data from the National Survey by Sample of Households-PNAD. The main results of the research suggest that the upper limits of education (high school, higher education and post-graduation) reduce the likelihood of incorrect waste disposal. Other mitigators of incorrect waste disposal are income, gender and internet usage. Furthermore, the level of education of the head of the family and whether the head of the family is a woman is reflected in the attitudes of the other residents of the households. These results point to the need to expand educational policies, including environmental education, which can promote positive externalities and can contribute to the spread of proenvironmental behavior.

Abstract

Qualidade ambiental e qualidade de vida, apesar de estarem relacionadas, são diferentes. Então, inserir variáveis que captem a qualidade do meio ambiente na análise econômica e social aplicada faz-se importante. Um consenso aponta as emissões antrópicas de poluentes como um dos principais motores para problemas ambientais atuais. Os objetivos deste trabalho foram elaborar um IDH para os municípios de Minas Gerais que considerasse a qualidade ambiental como uma de suas dimensões e verificar a posição de cada uma das regiões do Estado. Realizou-se uma Análise de Componentes Principais sobre o IDH-M Renda, IDH-M Longevidade, IDH-M Educação e IDH-M Ambiental, sendo que este último foi criado neste estudo. Dentre os resultados deste trabalho está o fato de que o IDH expandido evidencia que a dimensão ambiental dos municípios mineiros reduz significativamente o nível de desenvolvimento humano. Porém, não se vê mudança substancial nas posições das regiões de planejamento do Estado.

Abstract

Private universities also play a key role in the sustainability debate. But despite their importance, there a shortage of research on how sustainability is being implemented at private universities. Based on the need to address this gap, this paper investigates the nature and diversity of sustainability-based practices undertaken at private universities. It outlines the ways private universities see and perceive sustainability, and examines by means of a survey involving 10 universities from across all geographical regions which educate over 150.000 students, how these universities incorporate sustainability-related practices, as part of their operations. The results suggest that, unlike their public counterparts, about half of the respondents stated that they do not have projects undertaken to promote sustainability in local communities or in their respective regions. Also, some private universities perceive themselves as leaders in sustainability in higher education, while some are still developing a more robust sustainability profile. The conclusions of the paper are that the special features related to sustainable development teaching and research at private universities need to be better identified, in order to involve them more on sustainability efforts. Also, whereas many of them are highly engaged on improving energy efficiency, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, promote sustainable water usage and promote sustainable landscaping, there is a need for them to also engage in other areas. Finally, private universities should engage on further efforts to increase their sustainability activities, which are beneficial to them in financial terms, as well as in respect of their image and their operations. Abstract

The aim of this paper is to analyse the effects of climate change on irrigation adoption in Brazil. Temperature and precipitation projections for the 2010-2099 periods were employed under a number of different climate scenarios according the 4th Assessment Report of Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). The results show that irrigation adoption will be affected by climate change. Given current conditions, irrigation has generally been adopted in Brazil to cope with reduced precipitation and temperature variations. The estimated irrigation probabilities in the future scenarios were quite different across Brazilian regions. The main explanation for this pattern is the distinct climatic conditions and production structures. Considering future climate change, over the next 30 years (2010 to 2039), the irrigation probability is expected to increase in all Brazilian regions. However, this trend is reversed in the long run. Abstract

This study aims to evaluate changes on the structure, conduct and performance in the food industry after its productive reorganization which took place after the Brazilian trade liberalization. The period of analysis is from 1990 to 2004. The analytical framework was based on the paradigm Structure-Conduct-Performance of the Industrial Organization Theory. In order to provide the degree of market concentration, the indexes of Concentration Ratio CRk and Herfindahl-Hirschman HHI were estimated. Besides, the competition dynamics were evaluated using the turnover analysis. The CRk indicated a huge increase in the market share of the four and eight biggest firms. The HHI also followed this concentration trend. There was a high turnover in the industry, which demonstrates that despite the increasing market concentration the competition is very high among firms. The increased market concentration has not been used by firms as a way to obtain oligopoly profits. During the period, the food price level has decreased. Basically, the strategies of the firms are concentrated in market segmentation to increase sales. The food sector has been one of the most important in the Brazilian economy.
