1. On the cuprates' universal waterfall feature: evidence of a momentum-driven crossover

Abstract

We study two related universal anomalies of the spectral function of cuprates, so called waterfall and high-energy kink features, by a combined cellular dynamical mean-field theory and angle-resolved photoemission study for the oxychloride Na$_x$Ca$_{2-x}$CuO$_2$Cl$_2$ (Na-CCOC). Tracing their origin back to an interplay of spin-polaron and local correlation effects both in undoped and hole-doped (Na-)CCOC, we establish them as a universal crossover between regions differing in the momentum dependence of the coupling and not necessarily in the related quasiparticles' energies. The proposed scenario extends to doping levels coinciding with the cuprate's superconducting dome and motivates further investigations of the fate of spin-polarons in the superconducting phase., Comment: (Published in Phys. Abstract

Using Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering, we measure the paramagnon dispersion and damping of undoped, antiferromagnetic Ca$_2$CuO$_2$Cl$_2$ as well as doped, superconducting Na$_{x}$Ca$_{2-x}$CuO$_2$Cl$_2$. Our estimation of the spin-exchange parameter and width of the paramagnon peak at the zone boundary $X=(0.5,0)$ confirms that no simple relation can be drawn between these parameters and the critical temperature $T_\mathrm{c}$. Consistently with other cuprate compounds, we show that upon doping there is a slight softening at $(0.25,0)$, but not at the zone boundary $X$. In combination with these measurements we perform calculations of the dynamical spin structure factor of the one-band Hubbard model using cluster dynamical mean-field theory. The calculations are in excellent agreement with the experiment in the undoped case, both in terms of energy position and width. While the increase in width is also captured upon doping, the dynamical spin structure factor shows a sizable softening at $X$, which provides insightful information on the length-scale of the spin fluctuations in doped cuprates., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures, 2 tables, small corrections in references. Abstract

Bulk charge density waves are now reported in nearly all high-temperature superconducting cuprates, with the noticeable exception of one particular family: the copper oxychlorides. Here, we used resonant inelastic X-ray scattering to reveal a bulk charge density waves in these materials. Combining resonant inelastic X-ray scattering with non-resonant inelastic X-ray scattering, we investigate the interplay between the lattice excitations and the charge density wave, and evidence the phonon anomalies of the Cu-O bond-stretching mode at the charge density wave wave-vector. We propose that such electron-phonon anomalies occur in the presence of dispersive charge excitations emanating from the charge density wave and interacting with the Cu-O bond-stretching phonon. Our results pave the way for future studies, combining both bulk and surface probes, to investigate the static and dynamical properties of the charge density wave in the copper oxychloride family.

4. Direct observation of Jahn-Teller critical dynamics at a charge-order Verwey transition

Abstract

By means of diffuse and inelastic x-ray scattering (DS,IXS), we probe directly the charge-ordering (CO) dynamics in the Verwey system (NaMn$_3$)Mn$_4$O$_{12}$, where a peculiar quadruple perovskite structure with no oxygen disorder stabilizes a nearly full Mn$^{3+}$/Mn$^{4+}$ static charge order at $T_{\rm CO}$=175 K concomitant to a commensurate structural modulation with propagation vector ${\bf q}_{\rm CO}=(\frac{1}{2},\frac{1}{2},0)$. At $T_{\rm CO}$, the IXS spectra unveil a softening of a 35.3 meV phonon at ${\bf q}_{\rm CO}$. Lattice dynamical calculations enable us to attribute this soft phonon to a A$_g$ mode whose polarization matches the Jahn-Teller-like distortion pattern of the structural modulation. This result demonstrates that the Jahn-Teller instability is the driving force of the CO Verwey transition in (NaMn$_3$)Mn$_4$O$_{12}$, thus elucidating a long-standing controversy regarding the mechanism of this transition observed in other mixed-valence systems like magnetite.

Abstract

We measure the dispersion of the Cu-O bond-stretching phonon mode in the high-temperature superconducting parent compound Ca$_2$CuO$_2$Cl$_2$. Our density functional theory calculations predict a cosine-shaped bending of the dispersion along both the ($\xi$00) and ($\xi\xi$0) directions, while comparison with previous results on Ca$_{1.84}$CuO$_2$Cl$_2$ show it only along ($\xi$00), suggesting an anisotropic effect which is not reproduced in calculation at optimal doping. Comparison with isostructural La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ suggests that these calculations reproduce well the overdoped regime, however they overestimate the doping effect on the Cu-O bond-stretching mode at optimal doping.

6. Epsilon-iron as a spin-smectic state

Abstract

Using x-ray emission spectroscopy, we find appreciable local magnetic moments until 30-40 GPa in the high-pressure phase of iron, however no magnetic order is detected with neutron powder diffraction down to 1.8 K contrary to previous predictions. Our first-principles calculations reveal a "spin-smectic" state lower in energy than previous results. This state forms antiferromagnetic bilayers separated by null spin bilayers, which allows a complete relaxation of the inherent frustration of antiferromagnetism on a hexagonal close-packed lattice. The magnetic bilayers are likely orientationally disordered, owing to the soft interlayer excitations and the near-degeneracy with other smectic phases. This possible lack of long-range correlation agrees with the null results from neutron powder diffraction. An orientationally-disordered, spin-smectic state resolves previously perceived contradictions in high pressure iron and could be integral to explaining its puzzling superconductivity.

Abstract

Superconducting MgB$\_2$ shows an E$\_{2g}$ zone center phonon, as measured by Raman spectroscopy, that is very broad in energy and temperature dependent. The Raman shift and lifetime show large differences with the values elsewhere in the Brillouin Zone measured by Inelastic X-ray Scattering (IXS), where its dispersion can be accounted for by standard harmonic phonon theory, adding only a moderate electron-phonon coupling. Here we show that the effects rapidly disappear when electron-phonon coupling is switched off by Al substitution on the Mg sites. Moreover, using IXS with very high wave-vector resolution in MgB$\_2$, we can follow the dispersion connecting the Raman and the IXS signal, in agreement with a theory using only electron-phonon coupling but without strong anharmonic terms. The observation is important in order to understand the effects of electron-phonon coupling on zone center phonons modes in MgB$\_2$, but also in all metals characterized by a small Fermi velocity in a particular direction, typical for layered compounds.

Abstract

We find excitations lower in energy than known phonon modes in underdoped La$\_{2-x}$Sr$\_x$CuO$\_{4+\delta}$ (x=0.08), with both inelastic X-Ray scattering (IXS) and inelastic neutron scattering (INS). A non dispersive excitation at 9 meV is identified and is also seen by INS in (La,Nd)$\_{2-x}$Sr$\_x$CuO$\_{4+\delta}$, with 40$\%$ Nd substitution. INS also identifies a still lower energy dispersive mode at low q in the Nd free sample. These modes are clearly distinct from the longitudinal acoustic phonon and correspond in energy to the Zone Centre modes measured by optical spectroscopy and associated with stripe dynamics.

Abstract

We present a comprehensive study of the phonon dispersion in an underdoped, superconducting Ca$_{2-x}$CuO$_2$Cl$_2$ crystal. We interpret the results using lattice dynamical calculations based on a shell model, and we compare the results, to other hole-doped cuprates, in particular to the ones isomorphic to La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ (LSCO). We found that an anomalous dip in the Cu-O bond stretching dispersion develops in oxychlorides with a simultaneous marked broadening of the mode. The broadening is maximum at $\approx (\pi / (2a) ~ 0 ~ 0)$ that corresponds to the charge-modulations propagation vector. Our analysis also suggests that screening effects in calculations may cause an apparent cosine-shaped bending of the Cu-O bond-stretching dispersion along both the ($q$ 0 0) and ($q$ $q$ 0) directions, that is not observed on the data close to optimal doping. This observation suggests that the discrepancy between experimental data and \textit{ab-initio} calculations on this mode originates from an overestimation of the doping effects on the mode.

Abstract

We report measurements of phonon dispersion in CaC$_6$ using inelastic X-ray and neutron scattering. We find good overall agreement, particularly in the 50 meV energy region, between experimental data and first-principles density-functional-theory calculations. However, on the longitudinal dispersion along the $(1 1 1)$ axis of the rhombohedral representation, we find an unexpected anti-crossing with an additional longitudinal mode, at about 11 meV. At a comparable energy, we observe also unexpected intensity on the in-plane direction. These results resolve the previous incorrect assignment of a longitudinal phonon mode to a transverse mode in the same energy range. By calculating the electron susceptibility from first principles we show that this longitudinal excitation is unlikely to be due to a plasmon and consequently can probably be due to defects or vacancies present in the sample., Comment: Accepted for publication in Physical Review B

Abstract

We report a direct observation of a sharp Kohn-like anomaly in the doubly degenerate copper-oxygen bond-stretching phonon mode occurring at $\mathbf{q}\mathrm{=(0.3, 0,0)}$ in La$_{2-x}$Ba$_x$CuO$_{4+\delta}$ with $\mathrm{x=0.14\pm0.01}$, thanks to the high $\mathbf{Q}$ resolution of inelastic x-ray scattering. This anomaly is clearly seen when the inelastic signal is analysed using a single mode but is also consistent with a two mode hypothesis possibly due to a splitting of the degenerate modes due to symmetry breaking stripes. Our observation shows that the effect persists at the stripe propagation vector in a superconducting system close to optimal doping.

Abstract

We study anharmonic effects in MgB2 by comparing Inelastic X-ray and Ramanscattering together with ab-initio calculations. Using high statistics and high q resolution measurements we show that the E2g mode linewidth is independent of temperature along Gamma-A. We show, contrary to previous claims, that the Raman-peak energy decreases as a function of increasing temperature, a behaviour inconsistent with all the anharmonic ab-initio calculations of the E2g mode at Gamma available in literature. These findings and the excellent agreement between the X-ray measured and ab-initio calculated phonon spectra suggest that anharmonicity is not the main mechanism determining the temperature behaviour of the Raman-peak energy. The Raman E2g peak position and linewidth can be explained by large dynamical effects in the phonon self-energy. In light of the present findings, the commonly accepted explanation of the reduced isotope effect in terms of anharmonic effects needs to be reconsidered., Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures

14. Low-q dispersion of transverse acoustic phonons in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-\delta}$

Abstract

High-resolution ($\Delta E$=1.3 meV) inelastic X-ray scattering (IXS) in optimally doped untwinned YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-\delta}$ single crystals show that the dispersion of transverse acoustic phonons in the a-direction remains linear with no softening due to bending modes in the long wavelength limit, down to q=0.02. The sound velocity is found to be 2700 +/- 70 m s$^{-1}$, in excellent agreement with ultrasound measurements, and unchanged upon cooling from room temperature to 98 K. These results rule out a strong coupling between bending dynamics of the CuO$_2$ planes and charge carriers in cuprates.

Abstract

We investigate the low energy acoustical and optical modes in $\mathrm{HgBa_2CuO_{4+\delta}}$ using inelastic x-ray scattering (IXS). The experimental phonon dispersion and the dynamical structure factor are compared with an atomic shell model, and the set of the atomic potentials obtained are discussed. Our results are also compared with those obtained by Raman spectroscopy and with density-of-state data measured by inelastic neutron scattering.

We measure phonon dispersion and linewidth in a single crystal of MgB_2 along the Gamma-A, Gamma-M and A-L directions using inelastic X-Ray scattering. We use Density Functional Theory to compute the effect of both electron-phonon coupling and anharmonicity on the linewidth, obtaining excellent agreement with experiment. Abstract

We find excitations lower in energy than known phonon modes in underdoped La$\_{2-x}$Sr$\_x$CuO$\_{4+\delta}$ (x=0.08), with both inelastic X-Ray scattering (IXS) and inelastic neutron scattering (INS). A non dispersive excitation at 9 meV is identified and is also seen by INS in (La,Nd)$\_{2-x}$Sr$\_x$CuO$\_{4+\delta}$, with 40$\%$ Nd substitution. INS also identifies a still lower energy dispersive mode at low q in the Nd free sample. These modes are clearly distinct from the longitudinal acoustic phonon and correspond in energy to the Zone Centre modes measured by optical spectroscopy and associated with stripe dynamics.

Abstract

We report measurements of phonon dispersion in CaC$_6$ using inelastic X-ray and neutron scattering. We find good overall agreement, particularly in the 50 meV energy region, between experimental data and first-principles density-functional-theory calculations. However, on the longitudinal dispersion along the $(1 1 1)$ axis of the rhombohedral representation, we find an unexpected anti-crossing with an additional longitudinal mode, at about 11 meV. At a comparable energy, we observe also unexpected intensity on the in-plane direction. These results resolve the previous incorrect assignment of a longitudinal phonon mode to a transverse mode in the same energy range. By calculating the electron susceptibility from first principles we show that this longitudinal excitation is unlikely to be due to a plasmon and consequently can probably be due to defects or vacancies present in the sample., Accepted for publication in Physical Review B

Abstract

International audience; We report the first measurement of the Cu-O bond stretching phonon dispersion in optimally doped Bi2Sr1.6La0.4Cu2O6+delta using inelastic x-ray scattering. We found a softening of this phonon at q=(approximate to 0.25,0,0) from 76 to 60 meV, similar to the one reported in other cuprates. A comparison with angle-resolved photoemission data on the same sample revealed an excellent agreement in terms of energy and momentum between the angle-resolved photoemission nodal kink and the soft part of the bond stretching phonon. Indeed, we find that the momentum space where a 63 +/- 5 meV kink is observed can be connected with a vector q=(xi,0,0) with xi >= 0.22, corresponding exactly to the soft part of the bond stretching phonon.

Abstract

International audience; We have measured the lattice dynamics of underdoped La2-xSrxCuO4+ x=0.08 using high resolution inelastic x-ray scattering spectroscopy. The very good intrinsic Q resolution of this experiment allows us to differentiate between the two proposed scenarios for the Cu-O bond stretching phonon broadening reported at q=0.25,0,0. The results suggest that this phonon broadening is due to intrinsic damping rather than to a steep dispersion, having important implications on the interpretation of phonon anomalies in cuprates.

Abstract

International audience; High-resolution ($\Delta E$=1.3 meV) inelastic X-ray scattering (IXS) in optimally doped untwinned YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-\delta}$ single crystals show that the dispersion of transverse acoustic phonons in the a-direction remains linear with no softening due to bending modes in the long wavelength limit, down to q=0.02. The sound velocity is found to be 2700 +/- 70 m s$^{-1}$, in excellent agreement with ultrasound measurements, and unchanged upon cooling from room temperature to 98 K. These results rule out a strong coupling between bending dynamics of the CuO$_2$ planes and charge carriers in cuprates.

Abstract

The magnetic properties of materials depend strongly on the distance between ions and on the volume available for each magnetic ion. In this article, we introduce a bird's eye view of the various possible effects of pressure on the magnetic state and the consequences of these effects on the fundamental understanding of the magnetism in condensed matter and on the physics and chemistry of minerals in the interior of the Earth and planets. We will give basic information about the ex- perimental possibilities offered by synchrotron-radiation-based techniques in order to explore the magnetic state of matter at high pressure, their interest and feasi- bility. Finally, we will present some experimental highlights where x-ray techniques using synchrotron radiation have been successfully applied to show and explain the magnetic state of matter at high density.

The sound velocity is found to be 2700 +/- 70 m s$^{-1}$, in excellent agreement with ultrasound measurements, and unchanged upon cooling from room temperature to 98 K. These results rule out a strong coupling between bending dynamics of the CuO$_2$ planes and charge carriers in cuprates.
