Resumen Se investigó la presencia de anticuerpos IgG e IgM anti-citomegalovirus (CMV), en el suero de muestras de sangre tomadas del cordón umbilical de recién nacidos, mediante técnica inmunoenzimática de uso comercial, cuantificando la concentración de IgG anti-CMV demostrada, comparando su densidad óptica, con las de muestras testigo positivo de 0, 0,4, 1,0, 4,0 y 10 UI/ml. La demostración de IgM anti-CMV, se hizo luego de determinar la densidad óptica de corte de la prueba, por encima de la cual los valores encontrados indicarían la presencia de IgM anti-CMV en la muestra. En 196 (96,0 %), de 204 muestras analizadas, se demostró IgG anti-CMV, pero, en contraste con lo anterior, todas las muestras fueron negativas para IgM anti-CMV. La presencia de IgG anti-CMV en las muestras, en ausencia de IgM anti-CMV, sugiere que esta inmunoglobulina provino de las madres. De ser esto así, el porcentaje de seropositividad materna para IgG anti-CMV, estaría indicando un elevado índice de endemicidad de la infección en mujeres adultas del área Abstract Presence of IgG and IgM anti-cytomegalovirus (CMV) antibodies in the serum of blood samples taken from umbilical cord of newborns was investigated with a commercial immuno-enzymatic technique, quantifying the IgG concentration found by comparing its optical density with that of positive control samples containing 0, 0.4, 1.0, 4.0 and 10 IU/ml. Anti-CMV IgM was demonstrated after determining the cut-off optical density for anti-CMV IgM of the test, over which all values found would indicate anti-CMV IgM presence in the sample. Anti CMV IgG was demonstrated in 196 of 204 (96.0%) of the samples studied but, in contrast, all the samples were negative for anti-CMV IgM. Anti-CMV IgG presence and anti-CMV IgM absence in the samples suggests that this immunoglobulin came from the mothers. If this is so, the percentage of maternal anti- CMV IgG serum positivity would be indicating a high index of endemicity for this infection in adult women of the area
