Cyperus iria is an aggressive weed of rice throughout the world. Until now, the reference genome of C. iria has not been published. Here, we completed the chromosome-level genome assembly of C. iria based on Illumina, PacBio and Hi-C reads. The assembled genome size of C. iria was 479.08 Mb with a contig N50 of 7.02 Mb. 68 pseudochromosomes were produced using Hi-C scaffolding, accounting for 99.65% of the assembled genome. The number of predicted protein-coding genes is 47,395, of which 93.26% were annotated, and 37.69% repetitive sequences were identified. Invasive weed species exhibit both advantages, such as the potential for allelochemicals in bioherbicide development, and risks, including their threat to crop production. Therefore, this study aims to identify an allelochemical from Solidago altissima, an invasive weed species. The dose-dependent effects of S. altissima shoot and root extracts (SSE, SRE) on the signaling in the forage crop Trifolium repens and germination in various weed species (Echinochloa oryzicola, Cyperus microiria, Alopecurus aequalis, Portulaca oleracea, and Amaranthus retroflexus) were evaluated. The results showed that the T. repens seedlings treated with root extracts exhibited a significant decrease in plant height, dry weight, and chlorophyll content, along with an increase in H2O2 levels. Additionally, antioxidant activities, such as superoxide dismutase, catalase, and peroxidase enzyme activities, were significantly elevated in T. repens treated with SRE. Moreover, SRE treatment significantly inhibited the seed germination of all tested weed species in a concentration-dependent manner. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis of S. altissima root extract identified a high concentration of methyl kolavenate, a clerodane diterpene predicted to act as a phytotoxic agent. Saline–alkali (SA) stress is an abiotic stress that exists widely in the natural environment, seriously affecting the growth and development of crops. Tiger nut (Cyperus esculentus L.), a perennial herb of Cyperus in Cyperaceae, is considered a pioneer crop for growing and improving SA land due to its excellent adaptability and SA tolerance. This study is the first to evaluate the SA tolerance of tiger nut and the alleviative effects of nanomaterials (nano-selenium and multi-walled carbon nanotubes) and Arbuscular mycorrhizas (AMs) on SA stress. The results showed that the seedling fresh weight of tiger nut was the most suitable parameter to describe the dose–response effect of plant growth with increased SA concentration. Based on the log-logistic dose–response curve, the GR50 values of NaCl and NaHCO3 (the concentrations causing a 50% reduction in seedling fresh weight) were determined to be 163 mmol L−1 and 63 mmol L−1, respectively. Under these stresses, the exogenous application of MWCNTs at 100 mg L−1 or Nano-Se at 10 mg L−1 showed that the effect of SA on tiger nut was alleviated. Field evaluation further showed that the exogenous application of MWCNTs, Nano-Se, or AMs could effectively alleviate SA stress on tiger nut. Compared to the untreated control, the application of these substances significantly improved the plant photosynthesis-related parameter, antioxidant enzyme activity, plant height (height: 66.0–69.9 cm), tuber yield (yield: 23.4–27.4 g plant−1), and oil quality of tiger nut under SA stress. The results of this study indicate that the application of MWCNTs, Nano-Se, or AMs, to tiger nut can alleviate SA stress and maintain seed yield, providing the possibility of using these nanoparticles to improve the SA tolerance of tiger nut in agricultural practice. If soil compaction caused by the operation of forestry machines does not suppress the growth of planted seedlings, this operation may be an alternative method to conventional weeding for controlling vegetation competition. To evaluate the effects of soil compaction and vegetation weeding on the seedlings of three boreal evergreen coniferous species, a field experiment was conducted for two years. Under the weeding conditions, the main target species, Abies sachalinensis, which has thick fine roots, showed relatively robust belowground growth under soil compaction compared with the other Picea species, which has thin fine roots. Soil compaction suppressed the density and height of the vegetation, mitigating the light conditions. In A. sachalinensis seedlings, the leaf mass per area, nitrogen content per leaf area, and specific root length of fine roots showed positive responses to the weeding treatment without soil compaction. No weeding suppressed the relative growth rate in terms of the root collar diameter and aboveground volume, while these changes were not observed under soil compaction. Both the results of the light conditions and the responses of the seedlings indicated that the competitive conditions were weakened by soil compaction. These results suggest that when planting functional types with thicker fine roots, such as A. sachalinensis, operation of forestry machines may contribute to forest vegetation management. To evaluate the effects of different weed management techniques on the dynamics of weeds in transplanted finger millet, a field experiment was conducted from January to April 2023 at the Experimental Farm, Department of Agronomy, Faculty of Agriculture, Annamalai University, Annamalai Nagar, Tamil Nadu, India. An experimental investigation was conducted during the kharif season of 2021 and 2022 at the experimental site of the School of Agricultural Sciences (SAS), Nagaland University, Medziphema. The main plot included four integrated weed management measures, namely Weedy check (control), Hand weeding (15 and 30 DAS), Pretilachlor @ 1.0 kg ha-1 (PE) fb HW at 40 DAS and Pretilachlor @ 1.0 kg ha-1 (PE) + Bispyribac sodium @ 25 g ha-1 (PoE) at 20 DAS while four cultivars namely Chakhao Poireiton (Control), Chakhao Amubi, Wairi Chakhao and Khurukhul Chakhao under the sub-plot and laid out in Split plot design (SPD). At 40 DAS, both total weed population and dry weight was recorded with hand weeding at 15 and 30 DAS and was followed by the application of pretilachlor @ 1.0 kg ha-1 (PE) fb HW at 40 DAS. Among cultivars, Chakhao Poireiton and Wairi Chakhao registered lowest and highest total weed population and dry weight respectively. Weedy check (control) recorded the lowest growth, yield and economics while the maximum result was obtained with hand weeding at 15 and 30 DAS and was closely followed with application of pretilachlor @ 1.0 kg ha-1 (PE) fb HW at 40 DAS. Weeds in chickpea fields cause severe yield losses. Field experiments were undertaken in winter 2017–2018 and 2018–2019 to assess the efficacy of pre-emergence (PRE) and post-emergence (POST) herbicides in irrigated chickpea. PRE herbicides, viz. pendimethalin (as emulsifiable concentrate and capsulated suspension), s-metolachlor, and pendimethalin + S-metolachlor were used in two varieties of chickpea, viz. Bhakkar-2011 (Desi) and Noor-2013 (Kabuli). POST herbicides, viz. Lactofen, haloxyfop, quizalofop, and clodinafop-propargyl were applied at 30 days after sowing. Weed free and weedy check plots were maintained. Efficacy of PRE herbicides was better than POST herbicides, especially in the plots of Desi chickpea. All PRE herbicides were similar in suppressing weed dry biomass. Haloxyfop, quizalofop, and clodinafop-propargyl showed poor control of grass weeds. Irrespective of chickpea genotype, the maximum seed yield (1.16 and 1.30 Mg ha−1 in 2017–2018 and 2018–2019, respectively) was recorded for the weed free plots, with yield advantage of 137% over control. No herbicide provided season-long weed control. The huge gap between yields of weed free and herbicide-treated plots showed the need of integration of other weed management strategies in this crop. The aim of this study was to determine the period prior to interference (PPI), the critical-period of interference prevention (CPIP), and the total-period of interference prevention (TPIP) in sugarcane in the pre-sprouted seedlings (PSS) system, in coexistence with Cyperus rotundus and other weeds, adopting a loss of 5% in yield. The treatments corresponded to seven coexistence periods and seven weed control periods: 0–30, 0–60, 0–90, 0–120, 0–150, 0–180, and 0–240 days after planting (DAP). The cultivar used was IACSP95-5000. Until 26 DAP, weeds did not compete with sugarcane. From 26 to 68 DAP, weeds competed with sugarcane. Thus, it is considered that from 68 DAP, weed control is no longer necessary because increased periods of control do not result in significant yield gains. The results showed a 26 days PPI, 26–68 days CPIP, and 68 days TPIP, adopting a loss of 5% in yield, for weed competition with sugarcane in the PSS system. Cyperus sesquiflorus is commonly called fragrant kyllinga, fragrant spikesedge, or fragrant flatsedge. It is a cespitose perennial herb with a Pantropical distribution. In Brazil, it is a native species, being commonly named fragrant grass due to its aromatic content. In this study, the essential oil (EO) of C. sesquiflorus was extracted by hydrodistillation with a Clevenger apparatus. Yields of the samples ranged between 0.12% and 0.27% (v/w) oils from fresh and dehydrated whole flowering plants (with roots) and the oil was analyzed by Gas Chromatography/-Mass spectrometry/flame ionization detection (GC-MS/FID) and Gas chromatography/Mass spectroscopy (GC/MS). The main constituent of the oil, neopetasan (3S,4aR,5S)-4a,5-dimethyl-3-(prop-1-en-2-yl)-4,4a,5,6,7,8 hexahydronaphthalen-2(3 H)-one, was isolated by preparative thin layer chromatography (PTLC) and its structure was elucidated by extensive one- and two-dimensional nuclear magnetic resonance (1D/2D-NMR) (COSY, HSQC, HMBC, and NOESY) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy in combination with MS and comparison with literature data. A field experiment was conducted at Agronomy Instructional Farm, Department of Agronomy, Chimanbhai Patel College of Agriculture, Sardarkrushinagar Dantiwada Agricultural University, Sardarkrushinagar, Banaskantha (North Gujarat Agro-climatic Zone of Gujarat) during June-October, 2021 to assess the effect of pre- and post-emergence herbicides on weed control in groundnut crop using Randomized Block Design with ten treatments and four replications. Among different weed management practices, two hand weeding at 20 and 40 DAS recorded significantly higher number of pods per plant, resulted in significantly higher pod yield and haulm yield (23.70, 1980 kg ha-1 and 3082 kg ha-1, respectively) which was found at par with interculturing and hand weeding at 15 and 30 DAS (22.90, 1892 kg ha-1 and 2950 kg ha-1, respectively), post-emergence application of sodium acifluorfen 16.5+clodinafop-propargyl 8 EC @ 165+80 g ha-1 (22.53, 1835 kg ha-1 and 2864 kg ha-1, respectively) and imazethapyr 35 WG+imazamox 35 WG @ 70 g ha-1 (21.93, 1800 kg ha-1 and 2811 kg ha-1, respectively) due to better weed control of weeds as indicated by significantly lower density of sedges, grasses, broad leaf weeds and total weeds as evidenced by correlation and regression analysis between total weed density at 60 DAS, at harvest with the pod yield. Whereas, significantly lower number of pods per plant, pod yield and haulm yield at harvest were observed under unweeded check (10.30, 846 kg ha-1 and 1333 kg ha-1, respectively) due to significantly higher density of sedges, grasses, broad leaf weeds and total weeds observed in unweeded check. Being the most important cereal crop higher production of wheat is a major concern in the present scenario. Wheat field is generally infested from wide range of monocot and dicot, grassy and non-grassy weeds. This investigation was conducted to find a suitable herbicide mixture that can improve the growth of wheat plant as compared to the weedy checks. The study conducted twelve treatments which were replicated four times. The weed management treatments included T1: pendimethalin 1000 g a.i. ha-1 (PE), T2: pendimethalin 1500 g a.i. ha-1 (PE), T3: pyroxasulfone 127.5 g a.i. ha-1 (PE), T4: pendimethalin +pyroxasulfone 1250 + 127.5 g a.i. ha-1 (tank mix PE), T5: pyroxasulfone + metsulfuron 127.5 + 4 g a.i. ha-1 (PE), T6: pyroxasulfone 127.5 g a.i. ha-1 (EPOST), T7: pyroxasulfone + metsulfuron 127.5 + 4 g a.i. ha-1 (tank mix EPOST), T8: metribuzin 300 g a.i. ha-1 (PE), T9: pendimethalin + metribuzin 1250 + 280 g a.i. ha-1 (tank mix PE), T10: pyroxasulfone + metribuzin 127.5 + 280 g a.i. ha-1 (tank mix PE), T11: weedy check and T12: weed free. It was concluded from the results that the application of T7: pyroxasulfone + metsulfuron 127.5 + 4 g a.i. ha-1 (tank mix EPOST) resulted significantly superior plant height, number of leaves plant-1, leaf area index and dry matter accumulation of plants as compared to weedy check and rest of the treatments. Background: Groundnut or peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) is known as the "King of Oilseeds" which belongs to family Fabaceae (Leguminosae). It is highly susceptible to weed infestation because of its slow initial growth up to 40 DAS and small foliage cover. However, study on use of mechanical weed control methods with different fertility regimes for improving the productivity of groundnut was limited. Therefore, the objective of this study was to find a suitable method for optimising the productivity of groundnut. Methods: A field experiment was conducted at Odisha University of Agriculture and Technology, Bhubaneswar for two consecutive years of 2020 and 2021. The field experiment comprised 16 treatment combinations of four weed management practices and four fertility levels. The weed management practice included W1- Pre-emergence (PE) application of pendimethalin @ 0.75 kg ha-1, W2- Pre-emergence (PE) application of pretilachlor @ 0.5 kg ha-1, W3- Manual weeding (20 and 40 DAS), W4-Twin wheel hoe at 20 DAS followed by (fb) hand weeding at 40 DAS and four fertility levels includes T1-100% RDF (20:40:40) (N: P205: K2O kg ha-1), T2- 75% RDF + 5 tonnes FYM ha-1, T3- 50% RDF + 10 tonnes FYM ha-1, T4- without fertilizer + without FYM. Result: Amongst the weed management practices, use of twin wheel hoe at 20 DAS followed by hand weeding at 40 DAS significantly reduced the weed density, weed dry weight, weed index and recorded the highest weed control efficiency (69.8%). Highest weed index (32.9) was recorded with the application of pretilachlor @ 0.5 kg ha-1 (PE), which was followed by weed index of (28.5) with application of pendimethalin @ 0.75 kg ha-1 (PE). The fertilizer management practice with application of 50% RDF + 10 tonnes FYM ha-1 gave the highest yield and considerably reduced the total weed density, weed dry weight and recorded the maximum weed control efficiency (71.8% at harvest). We suggest that weed management with twin wheel hoe at 20 DAS followed by hand weeding at 40 DAS along with application of 50% RDF + 10 tonnes FYM ha-1 as the most effective strategy for controlling the weed menace in groundnut with the highest weed control efficiency. The roots of Cyperus compressus (Cyperaceae) have traditionally been used to treat intestinal helminthiasis in India. This study was designed to examine the abnormalities caused on Raillietina echinobothrida Megnin, 1880, and Syphacia obvelata, Rudolphi, 1802, on exposure to the root methanolic extract of C. compressus, using scanning electron microscopy. Worms were placed in extract concentration of 30mg/mL and on paralysis, worms were dehydrated in acetone grades and images were taken. The extract was then processed for GC-MS study to detect the compounds present in it. The images portrayed damaged microtriches in R. echinobothrida and loss of annulations and wrinkled cuticle were observed in S. obvelata. Compared to the damages caused by the reference drug, the results were milder. GC-MS study revealed 30 prominent peaks where 7-Methyl-Z-tetradecen- 1-ol acetate, was the most abundant compound which was detected at retention time 20.48 and with a relative abundance of 60.49. 4,8‐Dihydroxy‐1‐tetrahydronaphthone (4,8‐DHT), an allelochemical, was isolated from the Carya cathayensis epicarp and was discovered to have phytotoxicity in laboratory tests. In this study, field experiments were designed to assess the phytotoxicity of 4,8‐DHT on weeds in Cerasus yedoensis and Lagerstroemia indica forestlands after pre‐ and post‐emergence application, in addition to physiological effect on Lindernia procumbens were also measured. The phytotoxic results of 4,8‐DHT demonstrated that the total inhibition rate of weeds was 81.3% and 68.2% in C. yedoensis forestland and L. indica forestland after pre‐emergence applied for 24 days in 2021, and enhanced by 9.9% and 27.8% compared with post‐emergence treatment. Especially, in C. yedoensis forestland, a high concentration of 4,8‐DHT sprayed at the pre‐emergence stage after 8 days had a significant inhibition rate on all weeds except Cyperus rotundus, and was still above 80.0% after 24 days of exposure. Comprehensive control efficacy of 4,8‐DHT indicates that pre‐emergence application is more favorable for weeds control. Physiological analysis showed that 4,8‐DHT stimulated the contents of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), and proline and declined in the activities of antioxidant enzymes, meanwhile, accompanied by a decrease in the root vitality and chlorophyll content in L. procumbens. Background - During field work performed in 2018 by the University of Lubumbashi in the Katanga region of D.R. Congo, a peculiar Cyperus species was discovered at the edges of a thermal spring in the southwest corner of the Upemba graben, near the city of Luena. Material and methods - Herbarium material from the collected plant was studied and used as a basis for illustrations and a SEM study of the nutlets. A preliminary IUCN Red List assessment was performed according to the IUCN Guidelines and Criteria. Results - Cyperus kilelai, a new species from Katanga in D.R. Congo, is described and illustrated. This small tussocky species is characterised by weakly 3-4 angled dimerous nutlets with stigma branches in ad- and abaxial positions and glumes of 2.5-3.2 mm long. It is currently only known from its type location. Thermal springs in this region are of interest for the development of geothermal power plants in the near future. This study evaluated the impact of differential sowing windows and improved weed management strategies on weed dynamics, productivity, and economic viability of direct drum seeded rice (Oryza sativa L.) in the temperate agro-ecosystem of Kashmir. A two-year field experiment was conducted utilizing a split-plot design with two sowing dates (May 10 and June 3) as main plots and six weed management practices as sub-plots. The earlier sowing date (May 10) resulted in significantly enhanced leaf area index, crop growth rate, relative growth rate, net assimilation rate, and grain and straw yields compared to the later sowing (June 3). Among weed management treatments, four mechanized conoweedings (equivalent to weed-free conditions) and sequential application of bensulfuron methyl + pretilachlor (60 and 600 g a.i. ha−1) as pre-emergence followed by 2,4-D (0.75 kg a.i. ha−1) as post-emergence demonstrated superior efficacy in weed suppression and augmentation of crop growth parameters and yield attributes. These treatments also exhibited the lowest weed index and highest benefit–cost ratio. The May 10 sowing, coupled with efficacious weed control measures, significantly reduced weed density and biomass while concomitantly improving nutrient uptake and economic returns. The results indicate that adopting a May 10 sowing date for direct seeded rice, in conjunction with either four conoweedings or the aforementioned sequential herbicide application, can optimize agronomic productivity and economic profitability under the temperate conditions of Kashmir. The study aided in choosing the best sowing window and efficient weed management strategy for attaining higher productivity and profitability of direct seeded rice in temperate conditions. Elongated biconvex Carex fossil fruits are relatively common in fossil assemblages, but they are of much uncertain taxonomic affinity. Three fossil-species have been erected to accommodate the materials from the respective type localities (C. klarae, C. paucifloriformis and C. paucifloroides) and a number of superficially similar-looking fossils were reported from other sites. The formerly proposed affinities mostly pointed to the extant C. pauciflora (subgen. Euthyceras) or Carex sect. Cyperoideae (subgen. Vignea), depending on the authors. But despite the similar superficial resemblance of the fossil remains to these not very closely related sedge taxa, other groups are also possible matches. We used a comparative approach employing stereomicroscope and SEM to analyze the affinities of several Old World "mummified" fossils (ca. 23 to 0.1 Ma) of elongated biconvex fruits. Several samples showed a fair preservation of previously unattested microscopic characters. In particular, one of them allowed us to detect an indirect record of fine silica body morphologies (impressions) on the periclinal walls, which permitted the sound taxonomic placement of the remains from the Miocene of Siberia as a Carex sect. Cyperoideae. In all the other fossils analyzed, the epidermal cell outline and the central position of the main silica body were sufficient to discard assignment to subgen. Euthyceras, despite a purported affinity to C. pauciflora reported in previous literature. In the absence of detailed information on silica bodies, epidermal cell (exocarp) details in fossil specimens do not seem to be determinant for the systematic placement. However, the addition of diagnostic style characters pointed to sect. Cyperoideae as the best match with the available information. Our data support a continued presence of Carex sect. Cyperoideae in the Old World since the Miocene, which candidates Eurasia as a possible place of origin for it, despite DNA-based reconstructions alone proposed North America. Aspergillus flavus is a cosmopolitan saprophytic fungus that infests several foodstuffs and is associated with adverse effects in humans. In Senegal, significant losses of groundnut production are mainly due to contamination caused by this species. This study evaluated in vitro antifungal activities of Cyperus articulatus, Cyperus rotundus and Lippia alba essential oils against A. flavus isolated from peanut seeds. Essential oils obtained by hydrodistillation of rhizomes of the two Cyperus species and leaves of L. alba were analyzed with GC-DIF and GC-MS. The essential oil yields from C. articulatus, C. rotundus and L. alba were 1.1%, 1.3% and 1.7%, respectively. These three samples had the following chemotypes: (i) mustakone (21.4%)/eudesma-4(15)-7-dien-1β-ol (8.8%)/caryophyllene oxide (5.9%), (ii) caryophyllene oxide (25.2%)/humulene epoxyde 2 (35.0%) and (iii) geranial (46.6%)/neral (34.6%). The three oils tested inhibited the growth of A. flavus at concentrations between 100 and 1000 ppm. The L. alba oil was the most effective with total clearance of A. flavus on PDA. For the essential oils of C. rotundus (93.65%) and C. articulatus (78.11%), the highest inhibition rates were obtained with a 1000 ppm dose. Phytoremediation is a basic eco-friendly technique that uses to treat contaminated water and soil. The plants that remediate the water and soil by their absorption process and improve the water and sediment fertility or decrease the contamination. Form this experiment our finding suggest that the contamination decrease in majority from starting point to end point, it means plants plays the most important role in clean-up the environment and its cost-efficient method to improve the quality of water and soil. This study was carried out on Uben River which is around 50kms long and we covered around 41.88kms of area which divided into six locations. in soil minerals (Ca2+, Mg2+, Na+ and K+) from Up-stream to Down-stream the concentration of minerals is in decreasing order but in heavy metals (Cu2+, Zn2+, Fe2+ and Mn2+) the concentration data is varying. We selected plants that grow around riverbanks belongs to family Cyperaceae, Poaceae, Typhaceae. Most of the plants accumulate high Fe2+ concentrations in their root while in the shoots have low concentration observed from our data. For the statistical validation of data, we perform Grouped Component Analysis (GCA) and Radial Cluster Hierarchy (RCH) analysis. A major challenge in producing Melanoxylon brauna seedlings from seeds is the limited formation of lateral roots. A potential solution to this problem is the exogenous application of growth regulators. This study analyzed the effect of various concentrations of Cyperus rotundus tuber extracts on the root system and growth parameters of M. brauna seedlings. The experiment used a completely randomized design with five treatments (0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% C. rotundus extract) and five replicates of 10 seedlings each. The root fresh mass data underwent Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney-Wilcoxon tests. The number of lateral roots, height, and stem diameter were evaluated using one-way ANOVA followed by Tukey's HSD test. Regression analysis was used to identify the dose maximizing the stimulating effect. The extract of C. rotundus positively influenced root fresh mass, number of lateral roots and height. The concentration of 64.65% provided the highest root fresh mass (Adj.R2 = 0.9815). The exogenous application of C. rotundus extract proved technically feasible, offering an alternative to synthetic growth regulators used to stimulate root development in forest species seedlings. This study highlights the potential of natural extracts in sustainable forestry practices, particularly for promoting rhizogenesis in M. brauna and optimizing the production of high-quality seedlings. Background: Cyperus stoloniferus is an important species in coastal ecosystems and possesses economic and ecological value. To elucidate the structural characteristics, variation, and evolution of the organelle genome of C. stoloniferus, we sequenced, assembled, and compared its mitochondrial and chloroplast genomes. Results: We assembled the mitochondrial and chloroplast genomes of C. stoloniferus. The total length of the mitochondrial genome (mtDNA) was 927,413 bp, with a GC content of 40.59%. It consists of two circular DNAs, including 37 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 tRNAs, and five rRNAs. The length of the chloroplast genome (cpDNA) was 186,204 bp, containing 93 PCGs, 40 tRNAs, and 8 rRNAs. The mtDNA and cpDNA contained 81 and 129 tandem repeats, respectively, and 346 and 1,170 dispersed repeats, respectively, both of which have 270 simple sequence repeats. The third high-frequency codon (RSCU > 1) in the organellar genome tended to end at A or U, whereas the low-frequency codon (RSCU < 1) tended to end at G or C. The RNA editing sites of the PCGs were relatively few, with only 9 and 23 sites in the mtDNA and cpDNA, respectively. A total of 28 mitochondrial plastid DNAs (MTPTs) in the mtDNA were derived from cpDNA, including three complete trnT-GGU, trnH-GUG, and trnS-GCU. Phylogeny and collinearity indicated that the relationship between C. stoloniferus and C. rotundus are closest. The mitochondrial rns gene exhibited the greatest nucleotide variability, whereas the chloroplast gene with the greatest nucleotide variability was infA. Most PCGs in the organellar genome are negatively selected and highly evolutionarily conserved. Only six mitochondrial genes and two chloroplast genes exhibited Ka/Ks > 1; in particular, atp9, atp6, and rps7 may have undergone potential positive selection. Conclusion: We assembled and validated the mtDNA of C. stoloniferus, which contains a 15,034 bp reverse complementary sequence. An experiment to investigate relational effect of tillage methods and weeding regimes on seasonal weeds biomass, maize growth and yield parameters was conducted in both major and minor cropping seasons. On randomized complete block design, 2-tillage methods and 4-weeding regimes were factorially assigned at three replicate levels. A no-tillage (NT) and plough + harrow (P+H) with a 47 hp tractor were the tillage methods, whereas 0-hoeing, 1-hoeing, 2-hoeing and 3-hoeing were the weeding regimes at 2, 5 and 7 weeks after sowing (WAS). Akposoe maize (Zea mays. L) variety was sown and monitored over a period of 10 WAS. And there was higher growth and yield parameters on P+H than NT treatments at various weeding regimes, whereas weeds biomass was greater on NT than in P+H. An interaction of 2-hoeing regime on P+H recorded mean maximum growth parameters of 14.2 number of leaves, 82.89 mm stem girth, 45.53 cm root length in major seasons and 225.7 cm plant height in minor seasons than NT at different weeding regimes. Also, yield attributes from P+H at 2-hoeing regimes recorded maximum maize dry matter yield (9.189 tha-1) in minor season but total grain yield of approximately 8.167 tha-1 in major season. A 0-hoeing on NT produced denser weed biomass of 6.4497 tha-1 in minor season and 9.0967 tha-1 in major season. It is therefore recommended to plant maize on plough and harrow fields, and clear weeds by hoeing at 2 and 5 WAS for optimum growth and yield parameters at reduced weeds interaction. In order to increase groundnut productivity, a field experiment was carried out in the dry season of 2020 to assess the effectiveness of various mulching materials at suppressing weeds. The experimental treatments comprised of five mulching types; Control (no mulch), transparent polythene mulch, black polythene mulch, rice straw mulch and saw dust mulch) and three groundnut varieties (SAMNUT 23, SAMNUT 24 and SAMNUT 26). These were factorially combined and laid out in a Randomized complete block design with three replications. Findings revealed that mulching had a significant (p < 0.05) impact on crop qualities including canopy cover, chlorophyll content, pod yield, 100 kernel weight, and groundnut kernel yield as well as weed attributes like weed cover scores, weed density, weed dry weight, and weed control efficiency in both BUK and Wasai, respectively. The weed compositions were further grouped into various families comprising Poaceae (11), Euphorbiaceae (3), Amaranthaceae (4), Asteraceae (3), Cyperaceae (2), Cucurbitaceae, and Aizoaceae, each having one species with a different level of occurrence across the two locations. On the other hand, SAMNUT 26 significantly produced higher pod (2798 & 2119) and kernel yields (1198 & 1191), although SAMNUT 23 produced a heavier 100 kernel weight (55.51 & 54.52) at BUK and Wasai, respectively. In comparison to the other mulching types, applying black polythene mulch or transparent mulch lowered weed density and dry weight by limiting the amount of sunlight that the weeds got, preventing them from growing. Therefore, for dry season production of groundnut in the Sudan savannah ecology of Nigeria, mulching with black or transparent polythene film using the SAMNUT 26 variety was found to be effective in conserving soil moisture for optimum crop growth and development, while on the other hand, weed populations were suppressed. Carex dianae Steud. is an endemic sedge of St. Helena, an isolated island in the South Atlantic. Our study provides the first molecular sequence data for this taxon. We generated sequence data for plastid matK and trnK regions and nuclear internal transcribed spacer and external transcribed spacer regions to determine the placement of C. dianae in the broader Carex phylogeny. The placement of C. dianae falls within Carex sect. Spirostachyae Drejer, and it is sister to a clade including Carex clavata Thunb., Carex aethiopica Schkuhr (both from the Cape region of S. Africa), and Carex gunniana Boott (southern Australia). The existence of three divergent nucleotype groups and two plastotypes is revealed from genetic variation within C. dianae. The results suggest that the ancestor of C. dianae likely originated in the Cape region of South Africa, followed by transoceanic dispersal to St. Helena estimated at 4.4–4.9 million years ago, likely by a bird vector. The most divergent population is that on an isolated hill known as "The Barn", which may represent a distinct taxon. Key message : The Cyperaceae fruit consistency depends on the mesocarp. Seed structure is diverse and related to the evolutionary history of their species. A new storage tissue is described for Cyperaceae. Anatomy and histochemistry of Cyperaceae fruits (including seeds) are poorly known due to their hard, isolating tissues that prevent anatomical techniques. We performed the first, most comprehensive structural diversity characterisation of fruit and seed in Cyperaceae, accompanied by an unprecedented histochemical characterisation of seeds for this family. We analysed fruits of 29 species, included in 19 genera and 12 tribes within the subfamilies Cyperoideae and Mapanioideae, using light microscopy. Cyperaceae fruits have a pericarp with a one-cell-layered exocarp and endocarp, and a multi-cell-layered mesocarp. The mesocarp of the Mapanioideae has a spongy-fleshy outer region and a hard inner region. The mesocarp of the Cyperoideae has only a hard region. The pericarp is free from the seed coat. Cyperaceae seeds have a three-layered seed coat, an embryo with haustorial function of its scutellum, and two storage tissues: the endosperm and a putative perisperm. Nine seed morphotypes and four seed subtypes were observed among the studied species. Our results suggested that the fruit consistency is determined by the mesocarp. Both the terms "nut" and "achene" should be accepted to refer to the dry fruit of the Cyperaceae until a widely accepted fruit classification for angiosperms is proposed. The Cyperaceae seed structural diversity is high and related to the evolutionary history of the species. The "perisperm" is a new tissue proposed for sedge seeds, and is here characterized for the first time. The seed coat has a different structure than the one described so far for the family. Alternanthera bettzickiana is an invasive weed which has now attained the status of a major weed in several upland crops in Kerala. Field experiments were conducted in 2021 and 2022 to study the efficacy of various pre- emergence and post- emergence herbicides in controlling the weed in oriental pickling melon. Ten treatments included pre-emergence spray of oxyfluorfen and pendimethalin, post-emergence application of 2,4-D and metsulfuron methyl+ chlorimuron ethyl, oxyfluorfen and pendimethalin followed by 2,4-D and metsulfuron methyl+ chlorimuron ethyl, hand weeding at 20 and 40 DAS and unweeded control. Randomized block design was adopted and all the treatments were replicated thrice. Results indicated that dry matter production of A. bettzickiana, total weed dry matter production and nutrient uptake by weeds were significantly lower with pre-emergence application of oxyfluorfen followed by post-emergence application of 2,4-D or metsulfuron methyl+ chlorimuron ethyl and were on par with hand weeding at 20 DAS and 40 DAS. These treatments also resulted in higher crop growth, mean fruit weight and fruit yield. At 30 DAS, the same treatments as well as pre- emergence oxyfluorfen resulted in higher weed control efficiency, while at 60 DAS, only the combined pre- and post- emergence application of oxyfluorfen followed by 2,4-D or metsulfuron methyl+ chlorimuron ethyl resulted in higher weed control efficiency. Tribe Carpheae presently includes Carpha and Trianoptiles. Sixteen species were recovered in Carpha Banks & Sol. ex R.Br. sens. lat. by phenetic analyses and these species were separated into two clades that we recognise here as genera Carpha sens. str. and Asterochaete Nees, on the basis of phylogenetic analyses. We present a new taxonomy for the two genera, including eleven species in Asterochaete (A. acuminata X.F.Zhang, A. angustissima (Cherm.) X.F.Zhang, A. borbonica (Steud.) X.F.Zhang, A. capitellata Nees, A. dactyloides (Vahl) K.L.Wilson & J.J.Bruhl , A. discolor T.H.Arnold ex X.F.Zhang, A. eminii (C.B.Clarke) X.F.Zhang, A. filifolia (C.Reid & T.H.Arnold) X.F.Zhang, A. nitens Kunth, A. schlechteri (C.B.Clarke) X.F.Zhang and A. ulugurensis Nelmes ex X.F.Zhang) and five species in Carpha sens. str. (C. alpina R.Br., C. curvata W.M.Curtis, C. nivicola F.Muell., C. rodwayi W.M.Curtis, and C. schoenoides Banks & Sol. ex Hook.f.), with one unassigned name (Carpha aristata Kük.). Asterochaete acuminata , A. discolor and A. ulugurensis are new species; a new combination, A. dactyloides, is made for what was previously called A. glomerata (Nees) Nees. The ranks of Asterochaete angustissima, Carpha schoenoides and C. nivicola are clarified, whereas Carpha bracteosa C.B.Clarke and C. perrieri Cherm. are synonymised with A. capitellata. From sea level to snowy mountains, from swamps to bare volcanic rocks grow two groups of flowering plants restricted to the Southern Hemisphere. These sedges, in the genera Asterochaete and Carpha , are usually treated under Carpha but evolutionary studies support recognition of both. Photogenic features of the fruit and perianth allow easy recognition of the genera and we provide tools for the identification of the species, including three new to science and the Australian alpine species particularly vulnerable to climatic changes. Endophytic bacteria, recognized as eco-friendly biofertilizers, have demonstrated the potential to enhance crop growth and yield. While the plant growth-promoting effects of endophytic bacteria have been extensively studied, the impact of weed endophytes remains less explored. In this study, we aimed to isolate endophytic bacteria from native weeds and assess their plant growth-promoting abilities in rice under varying chemical fertilization. The evaluation encompassed measurements of mineral phosphate and potash solubilization, as well as indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) production activity by the selected isolates. Two promising strains, tentatively identified as Alcaligenes faecalis (BTCP01) from Eleusine indica (Goose grass) and Metabacillus indicus (BTDR03) from Cynodon dactylon (Bermuda grass) based on 16S rRNA gene phylogeny, exhibited noteworthy phosphate and potassium solubilization activity, respectively. BTCP01 demonstrated superior phosphate solubilizing activity, while BTDR03 exhibited the highest potassium (K) solubilizing activity. Both isolates synthesized IAA in the presence of L-tryptophan, with the detection of nifH and ipdC genes in their genomes. Application of isolates BTCP01 and BTDR03 through root dipping and spraying at the flowering stage significantly enhanced the agronomic performance of rice variety CV. BRRI dhan29. Notably, combining both strains with 50% of recommended N, P, and K fertilizer doses led to a substantial increase in rice grain yields compared to control plants receiving 100% of recommended doses. Taken together, our results indicate that weed endophytic bacterial strains BTCP01 and BTDR03 hold promise as biofertilizers, potentially reducing the dependency on chemical fertilizers by up to 50%, thereby fostering sustainable rice production. The study explores the impact of mine grassland restoration on plant communities and soil properties in alpine grasslands, a subject of significant interest due to the observed relationship between grassland changes, plant communities, and soil properties. While prior research has mainly focused on the consequences of grassland degradation on plant diversity and soil characteristics, the specific effects of varying restoration degrees in alpine mining grasslands at the regional scale remain poorly understood. To address this knowledge gap, we established 15 sampling plots (0.5m×0.5m) across five different restoration degrees within alpine mining grasslands in the Qilian Mountains, China. Our objective was to assess the variations in plant diversity and soil properties along these restoration gradients. We conducted comprehensive analyses, encompassing soil properties [soil water content (SWC), available nitrogen (AN), total phosphorus (TP), nitrate nitrogen (NO3-N), ammonium nitrogen (NH4-N), total nitrogen (TN), available phosphorus (AP), soil organic carbon (SOC), nitrate nitrogen, soil pH, and electrical conductivity (EC)], plant characteristics (height, density, frequency, coverage, and aboveground biomass), and plant diversity indices (Simpson, Shannon-Wiener, Margalef, Dominance, and Evenness indexes). Our findings included the identification and collection of 18 plant species from 11 families and 16 genera across the five restoration degrees: Very Low Restoration Degree (VLRD), Low Restoration Degree (LRD), Moderate Restoration Degree (MRD), High Restoration Degree (HRD), and Natural Grassland (NGL). Notably, species like Carex duriuscula, Cyperus rotundus, and Polygonum viviparum showed signs of recovery. Principal component analysis and Pearson correlation analysis revealed that soil pH, SWC, SOC, NO3-N, and AN were the primary environmental factors influencing plant communities. Specifically, soil pH and EC decreased as restoration levels increased, while SWC, AN, TP, NH4-N, TN, AP, SOC, and NO3-N exhibited a gradual increase with greater restoration efforts. Furthermore, the HRD plant community demonstrated similarities to the NGL, indicating the most effective natural recovery. In conclusion, our study provides valuable insights into the responses of plant community characteristics, plant diversity, and soil properties across varying restoration degrees to environmental factors. Background and Aims Despite chromosomal evolution being one of the major drivers of diversification in plants, we do not yet have a clear view of how new chromosome rearrangements become fixed within populations, which is a crucial step forward for understanding chromosomal speciation. Methods In this study, we test the role of genetic drift in the establishment of new chromosomal variants in the context of hybrid dysfunction models of chromosomal speciation. We genotyped 178 individuals from seven populations (plus 25 seeds from one population) across the geographical range of Carex helodes (Cyperaceae). We also characterized karyotype geographical patterns of the species across its distribution range. For one of the populations, we performed a detailed study of the fine-scale, local spatial distribution of its individuals and their genotypes and karyotypes. Key Results Synergistically, phylogeographical and karyotypic evidence revealed two main genetic groups: southwestern Iberian Peninsula vs. northwestern African populations; and within Europe our results suggest a west-to-east expansion with signals of genetic bottlenecks. Additionally, we inferred a pattern of descending dysploidy, plausibly as a result of a west-to-east process of post-glacial colonization in Europe. Conclusions Our results give experimental support to the role of geographical isolation, drift and inbreeding in the establishment of new karyotypes, which is key in the speciation models of hybrid dysfunction. The medicinal plant Cyperus brevifolius (Rottb.) Hassk. 1844 has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine. In this study, we determined and systematically analyzed the complete chloroplast (cp) genome of C. brevifolius. The genome is 183,717 bp in length with a GC content of 33.24%. It comprises four distinct regions: a large-single copy (LSC) region of 101,190 bp, a small-single copy (SSC) region of 10,366 bp, and two inverted repeat (IR) regions of 36,079 bp each. A total of 137 genes are present in the genome including 89 protein-coding genes, 40 tRNA genes, and eight rRNA genes. Phylogenetic analysis reveals that C. brevifolius belongs to the Cyperus genus. Weedy rice is the most challenging weed species to remove in rice production. We found a novel phenotype of seedling leaves which rapidly generates necrotic spots in response to imidazolinone herbicides in weedy rice, but its influencing factors and formation basis are still unknown. In this study, we used the leaf necrotic spot-producing type of weedy rice as the material. First, leaf necrotic spots were defined as physiological and vacuole-mediated cell necrosis by microscopic examination. The imazethapyr concentration was positively correlated with the degree of necrotic spots occurring, while the action site was in accordance with necrosis using herbicide stability tests combined with fluorescence parameters. Furthermore, transcriptome analysis revealed significant differences in the gene expression of endoplasmic reticulum stress and the lipid metabolism membrane structure damage pathway during necrosis, as confirmed by transmission electron microscopy. The light–temperature test also showed that high temperature and intense light could promote the appearance of necrotic spots. These experimental results are helpful in clarifying the process and basis of imazethapyr in inducing the rapid generation of necrotic spots in rice leaves and providing new insight into understanding the mechanism of response to imidazolinone herbicides and the control of weedy rice. Ovarian cancer, often labeled a "silent killer," remains one of the most compelling and challenging areas of cancer research. In 2019 alone, a staggering 222,240 new cases of ovarian cancer were reported, with nearly 14,170 lives tragically lost to this relentless disease. The absence of effective diagnostic methods, increased resistance to chemotherapy, and the heterogeneous nature of ovarian cancer collectively contribute to the unfavorable prognosis observed in the majority of cases. Thus, there is a pressing need to explore therapeutic interventions that offer superior efficacy and safety, thereby enhancing the survival prospects for ovarian cancer patients. Recognizing this potential, our research synergizes bioinformatics with a network pharmacology approach to investigate the underlying molecular interactions of Saudi Arabian flora (Onopordum heteracanthum, Acacia ehrenbergiana, Osteospermum vaillantii, Cyperus rotundus, Carissa carandas, Carissa spinarum, and Camellia sinensis) in ovarian cancer treatment. At first, phytoconstituents of indigenous flora and their associated gene targets, particularly those pertinent to ovarian cancer, were obtained from open-access databases. Later, the shared targets of plants and diseases were compared to identify common targets. A protein-protein interaction (PPI) network of predicted targets was then constructed for the identification of key genes having the highest degree of connectivity among networks. Following that, a compound-target protein-pathway network was constructed, which uncovered that, namely, hispidulin, stigmasterol, ascorbic acid, octopamine, cyperene, kaempferol, pungenin, citric acid, d-tartaric acid, beta-sitosterol, (-)-epicatechin gallate, and (+)-catechin demonstrably influence cell proliferation and growth by impacting the AKT1 and VEGFA proteins. Molecular docking, complemented by a 20-ns molecular dynamic (MD) simulation, was used, and the binding affinity of the compound was further validated. Molecular docking, complemented by a 20-ns MD simulation, confirmed the binding affinity of these compounds. Specifically, for AKT1, ascorbic acid showed a docking score of -11.1227 kcal/mol, interacting with residues Ser A:240, Leu A:239, Arg A:243, Arg C:2, and Glu A: 341. For VEGFA, hispidulin exhibited a docking score of -17.3714 kcal/mol, interacting with Asn A:158, Val A:190, Gln B:160, Ser A:179, and Ser B:176. To sum up, both a theoretical and empirical framework were established by this study, directing more comprehensive research and laying out a roadmap for the potential utilization of active compounds in the formulation of anti-cancer treatments. Cyperus rotundus rhizomes have been used in longevity remedies in Thailand for nourishing good health, which led us to investigate the effect on energy homeostasis, especially glucose utilization in myotubes and adipocytes, and on inhibition of lipogenesis in adipocytes. The results showed that an ethyl acetate extract of C. rotundus rhizomes (ECR) containing 1.61%w/w piceatannol, with a half-maximal concentration of 17.76 ± 0.03 μg/mL in 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging assay, caused upregulation and cell-membrane translocation of glucose transporters GLUT4 and 1 in L6 myotubes but downregulation and cytoplasmic localization of GLUT4 expression in 3T3-L1 adipocytes and was related to the p-Akt/Akt ratio in both cells, especially at 100 μg/mL. Moreover, ECR (25–100 μg/mL) significantly inhibited lipid accumulation via Adenosine Monophosphate-Activated Protein Kinase (AMPK), Acetyl CoA Carboxylase (ACC), and Glycogen Synthase Kinase (GSK) pathways. Its immunoblot showed increased expression of p-AMPKα/AMPKα and p-ACC/ACC but decreased expression of p-Akt/Akt and p-GSK3β/GSK3β in 3T3-L1 adipocytes. Moreover, the decreased expression of the adipogenic effectors, perilipin1 and lipoprotein lipase, in ECR-incubated adipocytes (50 and 100 μg/mL) indicated reduced de novo lipogenesis. Carex section Junciformes is one of the most diverse groups of the genus in South America, consisting of approximately 30 species. Here we describe a new species, Carex recondita, belonging to this section. We studied its placement within a molecular phylogeny of the group and found it to constitute an independent lineage. The new species is morphologically very close to C. austroamericana, from southern Patagonia, despite being phylogenetically divergent to the rest of Patagonian species of sect. Junciformes. So far, this species is known only from a few specimens recently collected in its type locality, despite growing in a well-collected area in the Andes of Metropolitana Region of Santiago, the most populated administrative region of Chile. Summary: Poales are one of the most species‐rich, ecologically and economically important orders of plants and often characterise open habitats, enabled by unique suites of traits. We test six hypotheses regarding the evolution and assembly of Poales in open and closed habitats throughout the world, and examine whether diversification patterns demonstrate parallel evolution.We sampled 42% of Poales species and obtained taxonomic and biogeographic data from the World Checklist of Vascular Plants database, which was combined with open/closed habitat data scored by taxonomic experts. A dated supertree of Poales was constructed. We integrated spatial phylogenetics with regionalisation analyses, historical biogeography and ancestral state estimations.Diversification in Poales and assembly of open and closed habitats result from dynamic evolutionary processes that vary across lineages, time and space, most prominently in tropical and southern latitudes. Our results reveal parallel and recurrent patterns of habitat and trait transitions in the species‐rich families Poaceae and Cyperaceae. Smaller families display unique and often divergent evolutionary trajectories.The Poales have achieved global dominance via parallel evolution in open habitats, with notable, spatially and phylogenetically restricted divergences into strictly closed habitats. Wetland vegetation and ecology of Lake Abaya in the southern Ethiopia was studied to determine floristic composition, plant community type and vegetation ecology. A total of 102 plots were laid along transects that were set up preferentially across areas where there were rapid changes in vegetation or marked environmental gradients to collect data on estimate of percentage aerial cover of plant species and environmental variables. Vegetation data was analyzed by agglomerative hierarchical cluster analysis using similarity ratio as a resemblance index and Ward's linkage method. Multivariate data analysis was performed using appropriate packages in R version 2.14.0. Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA) was used to explore the relationship between the species composition and environmental variables. The environmental data included in the CCA were determined using stepwise backward and forward selection of variables by ANOVA test. Statistical measurement regarding species diversity, richness and evenness of the plant community types was carried out by using Shannon-Wiener diversity indices. A total of 92 plant species belonging to 66 genera and 34 families were identified. Families Poaceae, Asteraceae, Fabaceae, Cyperaceae, Solanaceae, Euphorbiaceae and Amaranthaceae account for about 56.99% of the total proportion. Based on the cluster analysis, five plant community types were identified. The most important factors influencing the plant species composition and pattern of wetland plant communities were water drainage, water depth, land use, slope, altitude, and hydrogeomorphology. Navua sedge (Cyperus aromaticus), a perennial plant native to Africa, poses a significant weed concern due to its capacity for seed and rhizome fragment dissemination. Infestations can diminish pasture carrying capacity, displacing desirable species. Despite the burgeoning interest in integrated weed management strategies, information regarding the efficacy of competitive interactions with other pasture species for Navua sedge management remains limited. A pot trial investigated the competitive abilities of 14 diverse broadleaf and grass pasture species. The results indicated a range of the reduction in Navua sedge dry biomass from 6% to 98% across these species. Subsequently, three broadleaf species—burgundy bean (Macroptilium bracteatum), cowpea (Vigna unguiculata), and lablab (Lablab purpureus), and three grass species—Gatton panic (Megathyrsus maximus), Rhodes grass (Chloris gayana), and signal grass (Urochloa decumbens) were chosen for a follow-up pot trial based on their superior dry biomass performance. These six species were planted at three varying densities (44, 88, and 176 plants/m2) surrounding a Navua sedge plant. Among the grass pasture species, Gatton panic and Rhodes grass exhibited high competitiveness, resulting in a minimum decrease of 86% and 99%, respectively, in Navua sedge dry biomass. Regarding the broadleaf species, lablab displayed the highest competitiveness, causing a minimum decrease of 99% in Navua sedge dry biomass. This study highlights the increasing efficacy of crop competition in suppressing weed growth and seed production, with the most significant suppression observed at a density of 176 plants/m2. Rice–duckweed coculturing as an advanced technique has proven effective for weed control. However, the complex environmental interactions underlying its effectiveness remain unclear. In this study, a controlled pot experiment was conducted to isolate the shading effect of duckweeds (Landoltia punctata and Spirodela polyrhiza) from their intricate environmental interactions with paddy weeds (Cyperus difformis, Eclipta prostrata, and Ammannia auriculata). The results revealed that as the duckweeds grew, there were notable decreases in total weed density (52.41–77.01%) and biomass (42.33–99.23%) while rice biomass remained unaffected. Duckweed covering allowed less than 8.64% of light to pass through and led to decreases in environmental temperature, pH, and dissolved oxygen concentration in the floodwater, but had little impact on inorganic nitrogen levels. Through screening with random forest analysis and structural equation modelling, it was found that weed density and biomass were predominantly influenced by the reduced light transmittance (54.1% and 77.2%, p ≤ 0.001) resulting from duckweed covering while the decline in dissolved oxygen content partly influenced weed density (18%). In conclusion, this study's results bring a different perspective, confirming the sunlight-shading effect of duckweed as a critical mechanism significantly inhibiting the germination and growth of weeds. Background: The field experiment was conducted at the Anbil Dharmalingam Agricultural College and Research Institute, Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu during rabi, 2022-2023 to study the influence of spacing and weed management practices on growth characters, nutrient removal by weeds and nutrient uptake of direct seeded rice (DSR). Methods: The field experiment was laid out in split plot design with three replications. The main plots were spacing of 20 15 cm, 20 × 20 cm and 25 × 25 cm. This was on par with pyrazosulfuron ethyl 10% WP at 20 g a.i ha-1 on 3 DAS as PE + Bispyribac sodium 10% SC at 25 g a.i ha-1 on 20 DAS as PoE + Hand weeding on 40 DAS and hand weeding on 20 and 40 DAS. Similarly lower nutrient removal by weeds were registered under 20 × 15 cm spacing along with pyrazosulfuron ethyl 10% WP at 20 g a.i ha-1 on 3 DAS as PE + Bispyribac sodium 10% SC at 25 g a.i ha-1 on 20 DAS as PoE + cono weeding on 40 DAS. The interaction of spacing 20 × 20 cm and pyrazosulfuron ethyl 10% WP at 20 g a.i ha-1 on 3 DAS as PE + Bispyribac sodium 10% SC at 25 g a.i ha-1 on 20 DAS as PoE + Cono weeding on 40 DAS significantly increased the growth attributes such as plant height, dry matter production and total numbers of tillers and significantly lowered the nutrient removal by weeds. The objective of this work was to realize a literature review on the use of alternative rooting agents in rhizogenesis stimulating on fruit trees, analyzing the methods used and their effectiveness, under the hypothesis that alternative rooting agents promote effective rhizogenesis on fruit trees of commercial interest, both as commercial rooters. For this, Google Scholar was used as a search platform, using the first 10 tabs, in each of the search descriptors. A total of 426 scientific works and papers were found, and 263 were used, according to the selection criteria applied. Of these, 166 were in Portuguese and 97 in English; 228 dealt with conventional rooters, and 35 with alternative rooters. 53% of the total published works dealt with fruit trees, however, only 11% used alternative rooting agents. The most used alternative rooting agent was the aqueous extract of Cyperus rotundus L. (Cyperaceae), and the most used phytohormone was Indolebutyric Acid (IBA), for comparison with the treatments. In general, the alternative rooters presented satisfactory results or even better than the other treatments used, which demonstrates the viability of using them in rooting cuttings. A field experiment was conducted during kharif 2021 to assess the effect of various weed management practices in groundnut at Agronomy Instructional Farm, Chimanbhai Patel College of Agriculture, Sardarkrushinagar, Dantiwada Agricultural University, Sardarkrushinagar on loamy sand soil. Among different treatments, two hand weeding at 20 and 40 days after sowing (DAS) recorded significantly higher pod and haulm yield (1980 and 3082 kg/ha, respectively) and found at par with interculturing and hand weeding at 15 and 30 DAS (1892 and 2950 kg/ha, respectively), post-emergence application of sodium acifluorfen 16.5 + clodinafop-propargyl 8 EC @ 165+80 g/ha (1835 and 2864 kg/ha, respectively) and imazethapyr 35 WG + imazamox 35 WG @ 70 g/ha (1800 and 2811 kg/ha, respectively) as compared to unweeded check (846 and 1333 kg/ha, respectively) due to effective suppression of grasses, sedges, broad leaf and total weeds at 60 DAS and at harvest with higher weed control efficiency and lower weed index values. A field experiment was conducted entitled 'Integrated weed management in finger millet (Eleusine coracana L.)' to standardize different practices for managing weeds in finger millet and to assess the economics during the rabi season (2022) at the Instructional Farm II, Karuvacheri, College of Agriculture, Padannakkad, Kerala. Field experiment was laid out in Randomized Block Design with ten treatments and three replications. Different treatments have imparted significant impact for different weed control parameters viz., weed density, weed dry weight and Weed Control Efficiency (WCE). Pre-emergent herbicide application delayed the emergence of weeds during the initial period of crop growth and further weed emergence could be managed by the application of post emergent herbicide and mulching respectively. Even though chemical weed management delivered better results for various parameters, Integrated Weed Management (IWM) was equally effective in managing diverse life cycles and survival strategies of weeds. Hence, pre-emergent application of bensulfuron methyl + pretilachlor followed by mulching was selected as the effective IWM tool for finger millet as sole dependence on herbicides would lead to excess use, resistance development, etc. Hand weeding at 20 and 40 DAS was also proved to be an effective weed management strategy in finger millet but due to high labour cost and their unavailability at crucial time cannot be recommended as an economically feasible method. Wetlands harbour a wide range of vital ecosystems. Hence, mapping wetlands is essential to conserving the ecosystems that depend on them. However, the physical nature of wetlands makes fieldwork difficult and potentially erroneous. This study used multispectral UAV aerial photography to map ten wetland plant species in the Fynbos Biome in the Steenbras Nature Reserve. We developed a methodology that used K-Nearest Neighbour (KNN), Support Vector Machine (SVM), and Random Forest (RF) machine learning algorithms to classify ten wetland plant species using the preselected bands and spectral indices. The study identified Normalized green red difference index (NGRDI), Red Green (RG) index, Green, Log Red Edge (LogRE), Normalized Difference Red-Edge (NDRE), Chlorophyll Index Red-Edge (CIRE), Green Ratio Vegetation Index (GRVI), Normalized Difference Water Index (NDWI), Green Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (GNDVI) and Red as pertinent bands and indices for classifying wetland plant species in the Proteaceae, Iridaceae, Restionaceae, Ericaceae, Asteraceae and Cyperaceae families. The classification had an overall accuracy of 87.4% and kappa accuracy of 0.85. Thus, the findings are pertinent to understanding the spectral characteristics of these endemic species. Sedge is one type of weed that can infest the rice field, as well as broadleaf and grasses. If sedges are not appropriately controlled, severe yield loss will occur due to increased competition with cultivated rice for light, space, nutrients, and water. Both sedges and grasses are monocots and have similar narrowed leaf characteristics, but most sedge stems have triangular prismatic shapes in cross sections, which differ them from grasses. Event sedges and grasses differ in morphology, but differentiating them in rice fields is challenging due to the large rice field area and high green color similarity. In addition, climate change makes it more challenging as the distribution of sedge weed infestation is influenced by surrounding abiotic factors, which lead to changes in weed control management. With advanced drone technology, agriculture officers or scientists can save time and labor in distributing weed surveys in rice fields. Using hyperspectral sensors on drones can increase classification accuracy and differentiation between weed species. The spectral signature of sedge weed species captured by the hyperspectral drone can generate weed maps in rice fields to give the sedge percentage distribution and location of sedge patch growth. Researchers can propose proper countermeasures to control the sedge weed problem with this information. This review summarizes the advances in our understanding of the hyperspectral reflectance of weedy sedges in rice fields. Agro-waste is the outcome of the under-utilization of bioresources and a lack of knowledge to re-use this waste in proper ways or a circular economy approach. In the Indian medicinal system, the root of Cyperus scariosus (CS) is used at a large scale due to their vital medicinal properties. Unfortunately, the aerial part of CS is treated as agro-waste and is an under-utilized bioresource. Due to a lack of knowledge, CS is treated as a weed. This present study is the first ever attempt to explore CS leaves as medicinally and a nutrient rich source. To determine the food and nutritional values of the neglected part of Cyperus scariosus R.Br. (CS), i.e. CS leaves, phytochemicals and metal ions of CS were quantified by newly developed HPLC and ICPOES-based methods. The content of the phytochemicals observed in HPLC analysis for caffeic acid, catechin, epicatechin, trans-p-coumaric acid, and trans-ferulic acid was 10.51, 276.15, 279.09, 70.53, and 36.83 µg/g, respectively. In GC–MS/MS analysis, fatty acids including linolenic acid, phytol, palmitic acid, etc. were identified. In ICPOES analysis, the significant content of Na, K, Ca, Cu, Fe, Mg, Mn, and Zn was observed. The TPC and TFC of the CS leaves was 17.933 mg GAE eq./g and 130.767 mg QCE eq./g along with an IC50 value of 2.78 mg/mL in the DPPH assay and better antacid activity was measured than the standard (CaCO3). The methanolic extract of CS leaves showed anti-microbial activity against Staphylococcus aureus (15 ± 2 mm), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (12 ± 2 mm) and Escherichia coli (10 ± 2 mm). In silico studies confirmed the in vitro results obtained from the antioxidant, antiacid, and anti-microbial studies. In addition, in silico studies revealed the anti-cancerous and anti-inflammatory potential of the CS leaves. This study, thus, demonstrated the medicinal significance of the under-utilized part of CS and the conversion of agro-waste into mankind activity as a pharmaceutical potent material. Consequently, the present study highlighted that CS leaves have medicinal importance with good nutritional utility and have a large potential in the pharmaceutical industry along with improving bio-valorization and the environment.
