Purpose: To investigate the influence of a single infrapositioned ankylosed tooth or implant-supported restoration on smile esthetics. Materials and Methods: A series of 48 digitally modified images that simulated varying degrees of infraposition (from 0.25 to 2.0 mm, with a step of 0.25 mm) were created for each maxillary anterior tooth by altering the full-portrait image of a smiling man, adjusted to show medium and high smile lines. For the model with the high smile line, a series of 24 digitally modified images were created that simulated the infraposition of a single anterior tooth with a restored incisal edge. Smile esthetics for each of the images were evaluated by 160 participants (80 dentists and 80 laypersons), and a visual analog scale (VAS) was implemented. Results: For the images with the high smile line, an infraposition of ≥ 0.25 mm in the central incisor region and ≥ 0.5 mm in the region of the lateral incisor or the canine had a negative effect on the perceived smile esthetics for both the dentists and the laypersons. Regarding the medium smile line, an infraposition of ≥ 0.5 mm in the central and lateral incisor region had a negative effect on the perceived smile esthetics for both groups of observers. In the canine area, an infraposition of ≥ 0.5 mm for the dentists and ≥ 0.75 mm for the laypersons also had a negative impact on the smile esthetics. Conclusions: Even a minor infraposition of a single maxillary anterior ankylosed tooth or implant-supported restoration can reduce the perceived attractiveness of the smile. Infraposition in the canine site can be better tolerated in a medium smile line compared to a high smile line. In patients with a high smile line, prosthetic intervention is needed to restore the incisal edge of an infrapositioned tooth without harmonizing the gingival contour; this can be beneficial for the lateral incisor but ineffective for the central incisor and unfavorable for the canine. This randomized controlled trial aimed to determine the clinical efficacy of xenogeneic collagen membrane (XCM) derived from porcine peritoneum in combination with a coronally advanced flap (CAF) in the management of gingival recession defects and to compare the outcomes to those of connective tissue grafts (CTGs). A total of 12 systemically healthy individuals presenting with 30 isolated/multiple Cairo RT 1/2 gingival recession defects in maxillary canines and premolars were randomly treated either with CAF + XCM or CAF + CTG. Recession height (RH), gingival biotype (GB), gingival thickness (GT), width of keratinized gingiva (WKG), and width of attached gingiva (WAG) were recorded at baseline and at 3, 6, and 12 months. Patient perceptions of pain and esthetics and the modified root coverage esthetic score (MRES) were also documented. From baseline to 12 months, both groups showed a significant reduction in mean RH (CAF + CTG: 2.73 ± 0.79 mm to 0.33 ± 0.61 mm; CAF + XCM: 2.73 ± 0.88 mm to 1.20 ± 0.77 mm). At 12 months, CAF + CTG sites had a mean root coverage percentage (MRC%) of 85.60% ± 28.74%, whereas CAF + XCM sites had an MRC% of 55.13% ± 31.22%. CAF + CTG-treated sites had significantly better outcomes, with a greater number of sites achieving complete root coverage (n = 11) and higher MRES scores than the porcine peritoneal membrane group (P < .05). Introduction: Canine tooth syndrome is a rare condition defined by the simultaneous presence of superior oblique palsy and Brown syndrome, resulting from pathological changes in the trochlear region. This syndrome can develop through various mechanisms, including dog bites, head trauma, infections, inflammation, and scarring. This report highlights its occurrence following sinus surgery for the first time. Methods: Medical and surgical records of an 18-year-old girl who presented with reading position diplopia after sinus surgery for right-side frontoethmoidal osteoma were retrospectively reviewed. Results: Strabismus examination revealed 8 Prism Diopter (PD) primary position hypertropia in the right eye that increased to 20 PD in downgaze. In the upward gaze to the left, the right eye showed 12 PD hypotropia with a positive forced duction test. The patient exhibited simultaneous signs of paresis and restriction of the right superior oblique muscle, consistent with type 7 of the Knapp classification. The patient declined strabismus surgery, and vertical diplopia was managed with prism spectacles. Long-term follow-up showed spontaneous resolution of superior oblique paresis leaving the patient with isolated Brown syndrome in the right eye. Discussion: Canine tooth syndrome can arise as a complication of frontoethmoidal sinus surgery due to excessive intraoperative manipulation of the superior and medial orbital wall, particularly in the trochlear region. Event‐driven sensors are essential for real‐time applications, yet the integration of current technologies faces limitations such as high cost, complex signal processing, and vulnerability to noise. This work introduces a bio‐inspired mechanoluminescence visuotactile sensor that enables standard frame‐based cameras to perform event‐driven sensing by emitting light only under mechanical stress, effectively acting as an event trigger. Drawing inspiration from the biomechanics of canine teeth, the sensor utilizes a rod‐patterned array to enhance mechanoluminescent signal sensitivity and expand the contact surface area. In addition, a machine learning‐enabled algorithm is designed to accurately analyze the interaction‐triggered mechanoluminescence signal in real‐time. The sensor is integrated into a quadruped robot's mouth interface, demonstrating enhanced interactive capabilities. The system successfully classifies eight interactive activities with an average accuracy of 92.68%. The aim of this study was to examine the temperature changes on root canal and root surface in immature teeth with thin dentinal walls when irrigation solutions are preheated or intracanal heated, as well as the additional effects of passive ultrasonic irrigation (PUI) on these temperature changes. Sixteen maxillary canine teeth were trimmed to a length of 20 mm and prepared to mimic immature teeth with an apical width of 1.3 mm by enlarging those using Gates Glidden burs. To measure temperatures inside the canal and on the root surface, one thermocouple was placed from the apex into the root canal, while the other thermocouple was positioned outside the root. Irrigation was performed by heating the irrigation solution with different methods (room temperature, preheated to 60°C, 5 sec intracanal heated, 20 sec intracanal heated), and PUI was applied after each method. Temperature changes occurring inside the root canal and on the root surface were recorded and subjected to statistical analysis. Using the irrigation solution preheated and intracanal heated resulted in a significant increase in both intracanal and root surface temperatures compared to using at room temperature (P <.05). The application of PUI significantly increased the temperature of the irrigation solution only at room temperature group (P <.05). None of the applications caused an increase in temperature on the root surface exceeding 10°C. Applying PUI to heated solutions does not significantly increase the temperature in heating methods, but it does prolong heat retention in the canal by slowing down the cooling process. Although using preheated solution for 20 seconds results in higher intracanal temperatures, it should be noted that the solution cools rapidly within the canal. Awareness among veterinarians has increased regarding the need for comprehensive pain relief, but many companion animal veterinarians do not administer regional analgesia pre-emptively during dental procedures. The middle mental nerve (MMN) block desensitizes the ipsilateral mandibular incisor and canine teeth as well as soft tissues rostral to the delivery site. There is little published information on the efficacy of the MMN block in dogs. The objective of this study was to determine injectate distribution within the mandibular canal using a radiopaque contrast media/methylene blue solution. Half a milliliter of solution was injected within the opening of the middle mental foramen using a standard hypodermic syringe and a 25G x 25 mm needle. The course of the injectate was traced both via computed tomography (CT) and, in some cadavers, gross dissection. Post-treatment CT revealed that in 90% of the cases, the contrast diffused at least as far caudally as the mesial root of the third premolar tooth. The injectate was not identified within the canal of 5% of cadaveric mandibles examined. Although the solution used diffused caudally within the mandibular canal when injected using recommended clinical techniques, this may not completely represent the extent of clinical effects experienced in live patients. This technique also confirmed that the needle does not need to be advanced into the mandibular canal to achieve adequate diffusion to at least the mesial root of the third premolar tooth. Canine impaction is a common dental anomaly that requires a multidisciplinary approach, from diagnosis to treatment. The regular two-dimensional (2D) radiographs are able to visualize if the tooth is impacted, but unable to specifically localize it, and determine if there are any root resorptions associated to it. The cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) is able to three-dimensionally determine its location, aiding to the diagnosis and treatment plan. The major disadvantage is the amount of radiation that is added to the patient and can be even more significant in pediatric patients. The intra-oral ultrasound (io-US) is a new non-invasive and non-radiating real-time chairside imaging method that has the potential to aid in locating the impacted tooth. This paper presents 4 cases that required a CBCT for the location and treatment planning of impacted maxillary canines and were also scanned with intra-oral ultrasound. The images were then compared to the CBCT exam for validation of the new method. Through these cases, we highlight the capability of the io-US to locate the impacted canines. Other advantages of io-US might include evaluation of soft tissue thickness and vasculature that are important for surgical planning and execution. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The fracture of an endodontic instrument within the root canal system can occur during root canal therapy, complicating thorough cleaning and shaping. Consequently, managing the broken fragment becomes crucial. Methods: Eighty Nickel-titanium (NiTi) #20 K-files (Mani, Tochigi, Japan) were cut 8 mm from the tip, fixed into a corkboard, and classified into five groups (n = 14 each). The microtube-based methods included: microtube with cyanoacrylate glue (group 1), light-cured flowable composite resin (group 2), wire (group 3), internal shaft (group 4), and laser (group 5). Each method grasped the separated instrument's free end above the corkboard, and a pull-out test was performed using a universal testing machine(UTM). Additionally, 10 samples were separated in extracted canine root canals, and the temperature of the outer surface of the root was measured using the microtube and laser methods. Results: Groups 1 and 4 exhibited significantly greater pull-out force compared to the other groups (p < 0.001). Groups 2 and 5 demonstrated significantly lower pull-out forces (p < 0.001). In Group 5, the temperature increase was 11 °C on the tube surface and 3 °C on the root surface. Conclusion: All microtube-based techniques are effective for fractured instrument removal, with cyanoacrylate glue and laser methods being particularly suitable for cases that require higher force. Background: Maxillary canine impaction can result in malocclusion, temporomandibular joint complications, and esthetic concerns, thus influencing craniofacial development. Although cases of impacted canines are not uncommon in clinical practice, the likelihood of simultaneous bilateral impaction is extremely low; very few reports have documented cases of bilaterally symmetrical, inversely impacted canines. Case presentation: This paper reports a rare case of maxillary canine impaction, a condition characterized by the abnormal eruption of teeth. Potential causes of this condition include genetic, systemic, and localized factors. We analyzed this condition in the skeletal remains of a Taiwanese girl aged 11–14 years. The skeleton, dating 440–598 AD, was recovered from central Taiwan in 2019. Through panoramic X-ray and dental cone-beam computed tomography, we constructed a three-dimensional model of the skull, which exhibited bilateral symmetrical, inversely impacted maxillary canines—a rare clinical observation. On the basis of the current understanding of the dental field, the treatment of maxillary canine impaction is time consuming and labor intensive. Different impacted canine teeth have different difficulty levels of treatment. Conclusion: The archaeological data in this article show that 1500 years ago humans already had the problem of impacted canine teeth in the upper jaw. Background: The collum angle, tooth dimensions, root length, and alveolar bone thickness have a significant impact on orthodontic diagnosis and treatment planning. The boundaries of orthodontic tooth movement are determined by alveolar bone thickness and dimensions while the collum angle determines the appropriate positioning of the root relative to the cortical plate. This study aimed to compare the collum angle, crown dimensions, root length, and alveolar bone thickness of the upper and lower incisors, canines, and premolars in subjects with varying anteroposterior relationships. Methods: Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) images of 89 patients (178 teeth/tooth type) were included in the study. The patients were divided into 4 subgroups according to the incisor relationship. Group 1: Class I (64/tooth type), Group 2: Class II Div 1 (28/ tooth type), Group 3: Class II Div 2 (28/tooth type), and Group 4: Class III (58/ tooth type). The following variables were measured using Carestream CS 3D imaging software on coronal, sagittal, oblique, and reconstructed panoramic views: collum angle, mesiodistal crown width, crown height and thickness, root length, and alveolar bone thickness. Results: In Class II Div 2 subjects, the collum angles of the upper central and upper lateral incisors were increased. Class III subjects had an increased root length of the upper first premolars, upper central incisors, and lower first and second premolars compared to other groups. In Class II Div 2 subjects, the mesiodistal crown widths were increased in the lower canines compared to Class I and Class III and in the lower central incisors compared to Class II Div 1 and Class III, the height of the crowns was increased in the upper lateral incisors compared to Class III and Class I and in the upper central incisors compared to Class I and Class II Div 1, the buccolingual thickness of teeth was increased in the upper central incisors compared to Class I, Class II Div 1, and Class III and the alveolar bone thickness was increased compared to other groups. Conclusion: Class II Div 2 subjects exhibited increased collum angle, large crown width, height, and thickness, and increased alveolar bone thickness. Background: This retrospective study aimed to investigate the relationships between the radiographic features of impacted maxillary canines (IMCs) and traction duration and the factors affecting treatment success. Methods: Pre-treatment panoramic radiographs and patient records of 121 consecutive patients with IMCs were analyzed. The measurements included the angle of the IMC with the midline (α-angle), the horizontal position of the IMC relative to the adjacent teeth (S-Sector), the distance from the IMC to the occlusal plane (d-distance), the apex position of the IMC (A), and the vertical height of the IMC relative to the adjacent lateral tooth (V). The measurements were repeated 1 week later. The intraclass correlation coefficient was used to evaluate the relationship between two measurements. Binary logistic regression was performed to determine the factors affecting treatment success. Linear regression was conducted to determine the relationships between traction duration and other parameters. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was performed to determine the α-angle and the d-distance cutoff values for treatment success. The significance level was set at p < 0.05. Results: The buccally IMCs were mostly located in sectors 1–2, whereas the palatally IMCs were mostly located in sectors 3-4-5. The effects of the parameters on the treatment success were significant according to the logistic regression of age (p = 0.003), d-distance (p = 0.002), and α-angle (p = 0.001). Linear regression analysis revealed that traction duration was statistically significant (p < 0.001). Conclusion: According to the results of this retrospective study, the α-angle, d-distance, and sector can be used to predict the buccopalatal position of the IMC. The patient's age, d-distance, and α-angle affected the treatment success. The patient's age, d-distance, and the sector of the impacted canine affected the traction duration. Background: Knowledge of root and canal morphology is a prerequisite for effective nonsurgical and surgical endodontic treatments. The aim of this cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) study was to evaluate the root canal morphology of permanent canines in a Turkish subpopulation using two classification systems. Methods: A total of 2,000 canine teeth were examined. The number of roots was identified, and root canal configurations were classified according to Vertucci's classification and a new system for classifying root and canal morphology. Fisher's exact test was used for statistical analysis, and the level of significance was set at 0.05 (p = 0.05). Results: The canal configuration type I was the most common in all canines, while type III was the second most common. According to the new system, the code 1C1−1 was the most common, whilst 1C1 (A1) codes were the second most common for all canines. In this study, more than 10% morphology that did not fit the Vertucci classification was detected. In the categorization of accessory canals based on the new classification, the most common type in all canines was 1C1,1 (A1). Age had an effect only on the morphology of the left maxillary canine (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Canines in the Turkish subpopulation showed a relatively high degree of variation in root and canal anatomical variations. Clinicians should be aware of where canals converge or diverge to avoid missing canals. A novel water-soluble root canal filling material based on sodium iodide (NaI) has been developed to overcome the limitations of existing iodine-based formulations. However, the biological stability of this approach in animal studies remains unverified. This study evaluated the biocompatibility of NaI compared to commercial root canal filling materials (Calcipex II and Vitapex®) in pulpectomized canine teeth to assess its clinical applicability. Following a four-week observation period, none of the experimental groups exhibited tooth mobility or fistula formation. Radiographic and micro-CT analyses revealed no radiolucency in periapical lesions. Histopathologic evaluation demonstrated the absence of inflammatory responses in periapical regions across all material groups, with histological inflammation scoring 0. High-magnification histological examination of periapical areas showed well-preserved periodontal ligament tissue in all groups. Despite certain limitations of NaI-based fillings in the pulp cavity, including loss of radiopacity and tooth discoloration, NaI demonstrates potential as a safe and effective alternative for pulp filling material, particularly due to its minimal risk of root resorption and inflammatory response. Bats, as exceptionally long-lived small mammals, are at particular risk of metal poisoning due to the tendency of metals to bioaccumulate throughout their lives. In our study, we investigated the general question of how trace metal concentrations change with age in different bat tissues on the example of Pipistrellus kuhlii lepidus, which lives for years in one area and is strongly associated with urban environments. To determine the exact age of the individuals, osteochronology was applied, counting the number of dentine rings in cross-sections of the upper canine tooth of each individual. The age of 57 individuals of P. kuhlii lepidus, representing ca. 10% of the colony, was identified. Whole internal organs (liver, kidneys, lungs, and forearm bones) and samples of external tissues (fur and wing membrane) were analyzed for concentrations of Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn using atomic absorption spectrometry. We found that concentrations of Cd, Pb, and Zn, but not Cu, increase with the age of the bats, but in relatively unpolluted areas, metal concentrations do not reach the level which can cause chronic adverse effects. Nevertheless, due to the confirmed accumulation of metals in bat tissues with age, toxic effects can be expected in older individuals in areas where trace metal concentrations are elevated. Objectives: The primary objective of this study was to assess the validity of the KPG index in predicting the difficulty of treatment involving impacted maxillary canines. The secondary objective was to assess the reliability and reproducibility of the index. Materials and Methods: A retrospective study was conducted on 96 maxillary impacted canines (MIC) in 60 patients aged 13–35 years. Cone‐beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans were used to predict the treatment difficulty of MIC using the KPG index. Patient case files were assessed for the actual difficulty encountered in treating MIC. Cohen's kappa correlation coefficient was used for intra‐observer reliability and Kendell's W test was used for inter‐observer reliability. Spearman's correlation coefficient test was used to assess the correlation between predicted and actual treatment. Results: Easy and moderately difficult cases exhibited a moderate correlation between actual and predicted treatment outcomes, whereas difficult cases displayed a weak correlation. The perfect correlation was observed exclusively in extremely difficult cases. The intra‐observer reliability for assessing CBCT scans using the KPG guide was found to be 0.88, and the inter‐rater reliability was 0.94. Conclusion: The KPG index displayed 87%, 71%, 50% and 100% validity in easy, moderately difficult, difficult, and extremely difficult cases, respectively. This index showed good reliability and reproducibility. However, it is imperative to consider a multitude of other factors, including the patient's age, presence of associated root resorption in adjacent teeth, and duration of treatment, to make an informed decision between surgical exposure and extraction. Introduction: Dental caries is the most common chronic disease worldwide, and various forms of fluoride are considered useful preventive tools. The production of nanoscale materials can significantly improve their mechanical and chemical properties. The present study compared the microhardness of primary tooth enamel after applying sodium fluoride varnish (conventional) and nano-sodium fluoride varnish. Materials and methods: Sixty-eight sound canine teeth were selected in this experimental study. The teeth were mounted so that the buccal surface was exposed. A 3 × 3 mm square was obtained on the buccal surface of the crown of each tooth. Enamel surfaces were polished using sandpaper in the presence of water as a coolant. The samples were randomly divided into four groups (n = 17): G1, conventional 5% NaF; G2, 1% nano-NaF; G3, 5% nano-NaF; G4, control. The initial microhardness was measured. Before surface treatment with different fluoride compounds, the samples were placed in a demineralizing solution for two days, and the microhardness of all the samples was re-measured. Then G1, G2, and G3 were treated with the fluoride type specified for each group, and G4 was treated as a control (without treatment). Finally, pH cycling was applied, and the microhardness was measured again. Data were analyzed with SPSS 20, using Repeated measure ANOVA and post-hoc Tukey tests. P < 0.05 was considered significant. Results: Repeated measure ANOVA showed that microharness of G1, G2, G3, and G4 was statistically significant different. Tukey tests showed that the microhardness of G1, G2, and G3 were not significantly different. However, these three groups exhibited significantly more microhardness than the control group (P = 0.024, P = 0.027, and P = 0.010). Conclusion: There was no significant differences in enamel microhardness of deciduous teeth between conventional 5% NaF,1% nano-NaF and 5% nano-NaF. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: In order to successfully perform orthodontic mini-implant procedures successfully for the subsequent anchoring of orthodontic appliances, it is crucial to know the palatal bone thickness. This is usually assessed using two-dimensional radiographs. The purpose of this study was to use a three-dimensional digital imaging measurement method to provide information on palatal bone volume and bone thickness and to make recommendations on the optimal and safe insertion site and angle for palatal mini-implants. Methods: For this observational, cross-section study, pre-existing cone beam computed tomography scans of 184 patients were converted into 3D Standard Tessellation Language (STL) models of the maxilla. The area between the canine and the first molar was divided into 6 regions of interest (ROIs), three on the left side of the palate and three on the right side. The bone thickness of the palate was analyzed volumetrically and linearly while simulating different mini-implant insertion angles of 0°, 10°, 20° and 30° degrees relative to the palatal surface. Results: Among the ROIs, the greatest mean bone thickness was observed in the region of the first premolars with a mean distance (MD) of 10.44 ± 2.53 mm and decreased from anterior to posterior (MD: 3.44 ± 1.16 mm). The highest volume (Vol) values were also measured in the anterior palatal region (Vol: 1127.26 ± 483.91 mm3), while there was also a decrease in the posterior region (Vol: 394.36 ± 180.22 mm3). Regarding the simulated palatal mini-implant insertion sites, the greatest bone thickness was found in the anterior region, at the level of the canines with an angle of 0° (MD: 12.25 ± 3.75 mm). In the more posterior region, at the level between the first and second premolars, the greatest bone thickness was observed at an angle of 30° (MD: 7.93 ± 3.81 mm). Gender differences were found. Conclusion: This clinical study showed that the paramedian region at the level of the first premolar is the safest site for orthodontic mini-implant placement as evaluated by three-dimensional measurements. The results showed that implant insertion angle, gender and age are important aspects to consider when planning and inserting orthodontic palatal mini-implants. Trial registration: N.a. Background: Congenitally missing permanent canines (CMPC) have a significant impact on function and aesthetics. The prevalence is low, and the availability of rigorous studies on this issue in China is limited. This study was designed to investigate the prevalence and distribution of CMPC in patients and concomitant anomalies. Additionally, we aimed to compare the prevalence of CMPC between two age groups. Methods: A total of 10,447 patient's panoramic radiograph (PR) images from August 2021 to December 2023 were reviewed and data regarding the location and number of CMPCs were recorded. Age and gender were obtained from the clinical records. Additionally, concomitant anomalies such as persistent primary canines, congenitally missing other permanent teeth, supernumerary teeth and microdontia were also recorded in patients with CMPC. 10,447 patients were divided into two groups: group A (< 121 months of age) and group B (≥ 121 months of age) to record the number of patients with CMPC. The data were presented as counts (n) and percentages (%), and statistically analysed using the Chi-square test. Results: The average age of patients with CMPC was 9.2 years, with a prevalence of 0.69% (n = 72). The difference between genders was not statistically significant (p = 0.950). The prevalence of CMPC in group B (1.08%, 26/2400) was significantly greater than that in group A (0.57%, 46/8047) (p = 0.008). 89.42% (93/104) of the missing permanent canines had visible primary canines in patients. CMPC were more likely to occur in the maxilla (91.67%) than in the mandible (6.94%) (p<0.001). No significant difference was found between the left and right sides (p = 0.844). With respect to concomitant anomalies among those with CMPC, 22 patients had 58 congenitally other permanent teeth missing, 3 patients had 3 supernumerary teeth, and 12 maxillary lateral incisors from 7 patients presented with microdontia. Conclusions: The prevalence of CMPC was 0.69%. CMPC were more likely to occur in the maxilla in the presence of persistent primary canines and were not influenced by gender or side. Accurately identifying periodontal landmarks via acoustic imaging is increasingly important. Here, we evaluated the accuracy of cementoenamel junction (CEJ) identification using ultrasound by comparing it to clinical methods in 153 extracted human teeth. The distance between the CEJ to a reference point was measured using two clinical methods (visual examination and tactile sensation) as well as ultrasound imaging. Statistical analyses were performed across all teeth and sub-groups, including tooth types (incisors, cuspids, and molars/premolars), and two classifications: A- vs. B- (visually detectable or undetectable CEJ, respectively); and CL-S vs. CL-D (shallow or deep cervical lesions). In A- or CL-S teeth, ultrasound measurements highly agreed with clinical measurements, showing a 1.72-mm 95% CI for A- and 1.99-mm 95% CI for CL-S compared to visual examination, and a 1.77-mm 95% CI for A- and a 2.10-mm 95% CI for CL-S compared to tactile sensation, respectively. For 80% of A- and 76% of CL-S teeth, the difference between ultrasound and visual examination was within ± 20%. For 81% of A- and 80% of CL-S teeth, the difference between ultrasound and tactile sensation was within ± 20%. The variance of ultrasound versus clinical CEJ identifications showed a significant correlation (r = 0.6607) to the cervical lesion depth. Amyloid-producing ameloblastomas (APAs) are a histological variant of ameloblastoma in which the neoplastic odontogenic epithelial cells are associated with the production of amyloid. This jaw-associated entity has been only rarely described in animals and purportedly does not exist in humans. This report is the first description of an APA in a primate. A 17-year-old, male, captive cynomolgus macaque (Macaca fascicularis) had a slowly growing mass on the left rostral maxillary region that involved the bone. The mass was first seen in 2022 associated with the left maxillary canine tooth (203) and regrew after incomplete excision and extraction of the affected canine tooth. Additional excision was performed in 2024, at which time the mass was 3.8 cm in diameter, roughly spherical, tan and hard. Histologically, the mass was composed of packets, cords, anastomosing trabeculae and plexiform ribbons of odontogenic epithelial cells embedded in abundant fibrovascular stroma. Packets of epithelial cells surrounded an abundant, apical, congophilic amyloid matrix that was variably mineralized. Odontogenic epithelium was immunoreactive to cytokeratin AE1/AE3 and had no immunoreactivity for vimentin. These findings are diagnostic for APA. Veterinary studies documenting the effect of endodontic treatment on tooth fracture resistance are scarce. The objective of this ex vivo study was to evaluate the effects of mesial access preparation and restoration, as well as pulp chamber access, instrumentation, obturation, and restoration, on the fracture resistance and characteristics of canine teeth in dogs. Sixty-five dog canine teeth were divided into 4 groups: 1. Standard endodontic treatment through a mesial access only; 2. Treatment as per group 1, adding an incisal access, instrumentation and obturation of the pulp chamber, and restoration of the access; 3. Treatment as per group 2, without pulp chamber obturation or restoration of the incisal access; and 4. Untreated teeth. The fracture resistance and characteristics of each group were documented using axial compression testing, angled 45° disto-occlusal to the long axis of the crown. The maximum force prior to fracture in groups 1, 3, and 4 were not statistically different, demonstrating that restored mesial and incisal accesses with pulp chamber instrumentation did not statistically affect fracture resistance. However, obturated and restored group 2 teeth demonstrated decreased fracture resistance compared to all other groups (P <.001). Additionally, 26.7% of group 1 teeth sustained complicated crown fractures, while 100% of group 2 teeth fractured within the obturation or restorative materials, preventing pulp exposure in these cases. Although the cause and clinical importance of decreased tooth fracture resistance following pulp chamber obturation and restoration remains unknown, it may provide protective value for maintaining a coronal seal in the event of tooth fracture. This case study describes the diagnosis and treatment of a deciduous left maxillary canine tooth root that had been displaced into the pulp of the developing permanent left maxillary canine tooth in a 23-month-old female neutered Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. The patient was initially presented for bilateral persistent deciduous maxillary canine teeth extraction. Seventeen months later the permanent left maxillary canine tooth was found to be non-vital and tooth development had ceased prior to apical closure. Radiographs revealed a radio-opaque dentine-like structure and straight line centrally within the pulp of the permanent tooth. The displacement of the deciduous tooth into the developing permanent tooth was confirmed. This unusual potential complication should be considered when performing deciduous teeth extraction. A 6-month-old intact male Dalmatian mix puppy was presented for the evaluation of left maxillary swelling due to a suspected cyst and an unerupted left maxillary canine tooth. Removal of the unerupted left maxillary canine tooth (204) and enucleation of the cyst was performed, followed by histological analysis, which identified the maxillary swelling to be a cystic ameloblastic fibroma. Ameloblastic fibromas are rare in companion animals, and to the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first cystic variant reported in dogs. The clinical, radiographic, cone beam computed tomography, and histological findings of this case are discussed and compared with the findings of previously documented human and domestic animal cases. Aims: This study aims to comparatively assess the impact of root canal irrigants on the push-out bond strength (POBS) of mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA), biodentine, and EndoSequence root repair material (ERRM). Materials and Methods: In this in vitro study, the midroot dentin of human canine teeth was sectioned horizontally into slices of 1.5 mm thick. The canal lumen of each dentin slice was then enlarged to a diameter of 1.3 mm using a No. 5 GG drill. One hundred and twenty samples were then randomly split into three groups (n = 40), and the following materials were filled into the canal space, respectively: ProRoot MTA, biodentine, and ERRM putty. The samples were covered with damp gauze for 10 min. They were subsequently divided into four subgroups (n = 10) to be immersed in 3% sodium hypochlorite, saline, 2% chlorhexidine gluconate, and no irrigant (control), respectively. After incubation for 48 h, the POBS of the samples was determined using a universal testing machine. A stereomicroscopic examination of the samples was done to ascertain the nature of the bond failures. One-way ANOVA was employed to assess the differences in POBS among the three materials when exposed to different irrigants and pairwise comparison was done using post hoc Tukey test. The significance level was set to P < 0.05. Results: ERRM demonstrated the highest POBS of 6.83 ± 0.94 MPa when tested with normal saline and ProRoot MTA recorded the lowest POBS of 3.44 ± 0.47 MPa under chlorhexidine. Under saline, both ERRM and biodentine showed a significantly better (P < 0.05) POBS value than ProRoot MTA. With NaOCl, ERRM showed a significantly better (P < 0.05) POBS value than ProRoot MTA and biodentine. With chlorhexidine, both ERRM and biodentine showed significantly better results (P < 0.05) as compared to ProRoot MTA. Conclusions: ERRM showed the highest POBS value irrespective of the irrigant used, whereas ProRoot MTA showed the least. Background: Aesthetic zone refers to maxillary anterior region, from canine to canine, which is important in smile aesthetics. However, based on smile width, this area may be extended to include premolars. The aim of this study was to navigate the aesthetic zone of the upper premolar region for dental implant treatment. Methods: This study was conducted at a private dental center in Baghdad. Dental implant cases treated between January 2018 and April 2023 were included in the study. One hundred and ninetysix patients were included in the study. The demographic data, surgical information, dental implant zones, anterior aesthetic, premolars, and molar non-aesthetic zones, were recorded. Patients with incomplete data were excluded from the study. Descriptive and inferential statistics were implemented. The chi-square test was used to determine the relationship between nominal study variables. Results: The male-to-female ratio was 1:2. The highest percentage of implant replacement was found in the upper premolar region (28.7%), followed by the lower molar (23.6%), and the upper anterior aesthetic zone: the upper incisors (16.1%), and the upper canines (3.4%). Early success rate was approximately equal in the anterior, premolar, and other zones, but with the highest value in the premolar area (94%). Conclusion: There is a high demand for upper premolar implants by both genders compared to the aesthetic zone. The mammalian adult dentition is a non-renewable resource. Tooth attrition and disease must be accommodated by individuals using behavioral, physiological, and/or musculoskeletal shifts to minimize impact on masticatory performance. From a biomechanical perspective, the musculoskeletal system becomes less efficient at producing bite force for a given amount of muscle input force over an individual's life, because tooth-food contact area increases as cusps wear. In this study we ask the question: does mandibular biomechanical performance show evidence of compensation with increasing tooth wear? We use representative taxa of three carnivoran ecomorphologies (meat specialist, scavenger, bone cracker) as a study system to compare morphofunctional data on tooth macrowear, jaw depth, bite mechanical efficiency, and jaw stress during biting. No significant shifts in adult mandibular corpus dimensions occurs in the sampled taxa as canine and carnassial teeth wear. In bone cracking spotted hyenas carnassial biting mechanical efficiency increases significantly with increasing tooth wear, with no significant change in mandibular stress. Analyses of the fossil carnivore Hyaenodon suggests an increase in canine biting efficiency with increased tooth wear, but this may reflect interspecific variation or phylogenetic contingency rather than a life history shift. Overall, these findings indicate that scavenging hyaenids and felid meat specialists do not exhibit morphofunctional compensation for the decreased mechanical capability of worn and dull teeth. Behavioral modifications, rather than musculoskeletal adjustments, may instead play a major role in maintaining food acquisition and processing capabilities for individuals surviving into advanced ontogenetic age and tooth wear. These observations highlight the mammalian masticatory system as having a dynamic performance profile through its useful lifespan, and encourage a more nuanced understanding of past and present carnivore guilds by considering wear-dependent performance changes as a possible source of selection. The alveolar bone crest level is essential in determining the need for bone removal in subjects with altered passive eruption (APE). This study assessed the validity of CBCT and transgingival probing in determining the alveolar bone crest level. Patients presenting with APE were assessed. Transgingival probing was performed to clinically assess the distance between the cementoenamel junction (CEJ) and the bone crest at the midpoint of the maxillary anterior teeth. CBCT was used to assess this distance at the same point. Upon reflection of a full mucoperiosteal flap, the actual distance was measured. Similar actual and CBCT measurements of the distance between the CEJ and bone crest at teeth 13, 22, and 23 (FDI numbering system) were recorded (P > .05). However, in teeth 11, 12, and 21, the distance was significantly greater on CBCT scans (P < .05). No significant difference was detected between transgingival probing and the actual distance at all teeth assessed. Careful transgingival probing provides an accurate measure of the distance between the CEJ and bone crest. Purpose: To compare bone substitutes composed of glycated collagen with synthetic micro-sized (1 to 10 µm) hydroxyapatite (OB) vs non-cross-linked collagen matrix with large-particle (250 to 1,000 µm) bovine-derived hydroxyapatite (BOC). Materials and Methods: The P1 to P4 premolars were bilaterally extracted from the mandibles of 19 Beagle dogs. After 21 days, osteotomies were created in each dog that received OB or BOC and were covered with a collagen membrane or were left untreated. The animals were randomly divided into three groups based on sacrifice time (4, 12, or 24 weeks). The right and left hemimandibles were trimmed to facilitate imaging and histology, and all tissues were placed in 10% neutral-buffered formalin. Microcomputed tomography (MicroCT 40 Scanner, Scanco) was used to analyze bone sections. Bone volume, residual material volume, and bone mineral density were determined for each treatment site (OB and BOC) based on a volume of interest that encompassed the original defect. Additionally, blinded histopathologic assessment (based on the ISO 10993-6 scoring system) and histomorphometry were performed on sections ground to < 100 µm thick and stained with Stevenel's blue. Results: No clinical side effects were noted. No statistical differences were observed for OB vs BOC regarding the mineral volume percentage. Compared to OB, BOC had significantly higher mean mineralization densities at 12 weeks (P < .01), but this difference did not extend to 24 weeks. For residual grafting material, bone maturation, alveolar ridge restoration, and inflammatory response, OB showed a residual amount of bone graft and no statistical differences compared to BOC. Conclusion: Both OB and BOC represent valid treatment options for critically sized bone defects. Purpose: To compare glycated multilayered membranes (OV) to a commercially available thin-layer membrane (OP) in a lateral ridge augmentation model in dogs. Materials and Methods: This was designed as a three-arm study, where one negative control (empty defect) was compared to two test arms: alveolar bone defects grafted with a mixture of 90% deproteinized bovine bone mineral and 10% porcine collagen, then covered with either a thick- (OV) or thin-layered (OP) membrane. Animals were randomly divided into three groups corresponding to the final sacrifice times of 4 weeks, 12 weeks, and 24 weeks. Sections underwent microCT, histology, histopathology, and histomorphometry. Results: No statistical differences were observed for OV compared to OP regarding the percentage of mineral volume and mean mineral density, amount of bone maturation, percentage of bone graft and membrane remaining in the grafted area, alveolar ridge width measurements, membrane mineralization, or ossification. Test groups presented significantly higher values compared to the empty control for all the endpoints. Objectives: This study evaluated maxillary growth and dental arch relationships at 5 and 10 years of age in patients with unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP) who underwent early cleft lip and palate surgery. Methods: 28 patients with UCLP who underwent cleft lip surgery in neonatal age and cleft palate surgery at average age of 7 months without orthodontic treatment (intervention group) were measured for intercanine and intermolar distances and for dental arch length. These measurements were compared with those of 30 healthy participants in a control group. Dental arch relationships in the intervention group were evaluated by 5-YO index at 5 years and the GOSLON Yardstick score at 10 years of patients' age. Results: Patients in the intervention group had significantly shorter mean intercanine distance and arch length than control patients at both 5 and 10 years of age (p<.001 for all). There were no significant differences in intermolar distance at both 5 (p =.945) and 10 years (p =.105) of patients' age. The average 5YO index increased from 2.46 to an average GOSLON 10-year score of 2.89 in intervention group. Conclusion: Intercanine distance and dental arch length of patients with UCLP are significantly reduced at 5 and 10 years after early cleft lip and palate surgeries compared to the healthy population. Dental arch relationships at 5 and 10 years of patients with UCLP show comparable outcomes to those reported by other cleft centers. China was one of the earliest domestication centres for pigs in the Old World. Since their domestication, pigs have been significantly involved in human societies from both economic and ceremonial perspectives, so the investigation of pig domestication is key to understand the development process of ancient communities. However, the pig domestication process has not been fully explored in Shandong, one of the earliest regions for exploiting pig resources, such as canine teeth, in China. We use geometric morphometry to analyse the second lower molars of pigs associated with diverse periods, including the Longshan, Yueshi, and Shang and Zhou, at Dinggong, China. The results show that while there was a relatively consistent pig phenotype in this region from the Longshan to the Shang and Zhou periods, the centroid sizes of pigs experienced a moderate decrease over time. A certain number of wild boars were harvested by humans, but their proportions declined chronologically along with the gradually intensification of pig management. Apart from household refuse, fodders similar to the staple plants for humans were provisioned to those managed pigs, suggesting a close relationship between humans and pigs. In spite of more time and energy required for managing pigs, human societies could have benefited from this investment with a better secured meat supply and more ceremonial materials, which helped strengthen the human–pig bond from the Neolithic period to today. Background: Environmental and genetic factors associated with canine impaction have been extensively researched, whereas the bone characteristics in the impaction area have not been thoroughly studied. Accordingly, the objective of this investigation was to provide a skeletal assessment in terms of bone density, bone microstructure, bone volume, and palatal volume in subjects with unilaterally impacted maxillary canines. Methods: A retrospective design has been employed to address the aim of this study, where the initial pre-treatment cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans of 30 patients with unilateral maxillary canine impaction were assessed. The obtained patients' data were equally divided according to the location of the impaction into 2 groups, one with buccally impacted canines, and another with palatal impactions, with the contra-lateral sides in both groups serving as the controls. Skeletal measurements such as bone density (BD), bone microstructure in terms of fractal dimension (FD), maxillary bone volume (MBV), and palatal volume (PV) were evaluated from the acquired CBCTs in both groups and compared to the controls. Results: With buccal impactions, significantly greater BD and FD have been reported (p < 0.001), whereas non-significant differences were found regarding the PV when compared with controls (p = 0.56). MBV was significantly greater on the non-impaction side in comparison with buccal impaction sides (p < 0.001). For palatal impactions: BD, FD, and MBV were significantly greater on the impaction sides (p < 0.001), and conversely with PV which has been reported to be significantly greater on the non-impaction sides (p < 0.001). Conclusions: As per the obtained results, buccally impacted canines are associated with greater BD and FD, and less MBV, whereas palatally impacted canines are accompanied with greater BD, FD, and MBV, in addition to less PV, when both conditions are compared with the non-impaction sides. Background: As the functional and aesthetical importance of the canine cannot be overstated, the management of a missing canine is challenging. This case report describes the treatment of an infra-occluded ankylosed maxillary canine in a patient with previously failed orthodontic treatment. Case description: A 20-year-old patient sought a second opinion for orthodontic treatment failure. The patient presented with an impacted, ankylosed, and severely infra-occluded right maxillary canine, as well as an iatrogenic clockwise cant of the maxillary occlusal plane and several root resorptions. The treatment corrected the cant of the occlusal plane while avoiding further root resorption, partially extracted the upper right canine, improved the quality and quantity of the soft tissue in the newly edentulous area, and provided a prosthetic rehabilitation using a lithium disilicate ceramic resin-bonded cantilever bridge. Conclusions: The use of a cantilevered bridge resulted in an aesthetically pleasing and minimally invasive rehabilitation. This technique is reversible, does not affect pulp vitality, and is a viable solution for rehabilitating the smiles of young patients. Clinical significance: The smile rehabilitation for an ankylosed maxillary canine, especially in the case of a previously failed orthodontic treatment, is an important clinical challenge. A minimally invasive long-term restoration with a cantilever bridge is a viable solution. Functional and aesthetically pleasant results can be achieved with a multidisciplinary approach. Objectives: This study aimed to compare the effects of requirement-based and test-based formative assessment methods on pre-clinical endodontic competence and performance of dental students. Methods: This interventional field study was conducted on dental students of Shahid Beheshti Dental School in the first and second semesters of 2021 academic year (third-year students), taking practical basic endodontics 1. After receiving theoretical instructions and practical demonstrations, the students in both groups were asked to perform root canal therapy for extracted maxillary anterior and mandibular/maxillary canine teeth as part of their requirement. Their errors were assessed and recorded by two calibrated instructors. Next, group 1 students performed root canal therapy for mandibular incisors and premolars as their requirement and returned the treated teeth on a specific date every 3 weeks. Group 2 students did not have a specific requirement and only participated in an examination which included endodontic treatment of the same group of teeth treated by group 1 students at the same designated dates. The treated teeth were assessed by instructors for errors. A final examination was held at the end of the semester for both groups. The two groups were compared by independent t-test, ANCOVA, Pearson Chi-square, and Mann-Whitney tests (alpha=0.05). Results: No significant difference was found between the two groups in access cavity preparation, root canal instrumentation, or obturation (P>0.05). Aim: The main aim of the study was to evaluate tooth position in plaster models of nonorthodontic subjects that have optimal occlusion, using the American Board of Orthodontics (ABO) criteria and comparing it to ABO standards. Methods: Forty nonorthodontic subjects with optimal occlusion were evaluated for teeth positioning with ABO measurement criteria, using the ABO gauge. These measurements were compared to the ABO standards. On the panoramic radiographs of these subjects, distances between the roots of teeth were measured using the digital ruler in Quick CephR. Lateral cephalograms were scanned and digitized into Quick CephR systems to evaluate the skeletal anteroposterior and vertical relationship. Means and standard deviations were calculated for all the variables and compared to ABO standards. Correlations were obtained between attrition and overjet. Correlations were also studied between anteroposterior skeletal relation, vertical skeletal relation, and teeth positioning. In subjects that had accurate age records, the relationship between age and change in buccolingual inclination was evaluated. Results: A significant difference in the mean values for inclination of maxillary and mandibular first bicuspids, second bicuspids, first molars, and second molars as compared to the board criteria was observed. Accuracy of panoramic radiograph to measure root proximity, especially in the cuspid region, is questionable. There was a positive correlation between overjet at the cuspid region and attrition. There was a minimal correlation between age and buccolingual inclination of teeth, indicating only a trend for mandibular second bicuspid to upright with age. Conclusion: The ABO criteria and standards used to evaluate finished orthodontic cases are consistent with naturally occurring optimal dentitions, except for buccolingual inclination of posterior teeth in both maxillary and mandibular arches. Background Estimating stature is essential for the purpose of identifying human remains after death. It is common for the extremities or the head to be amputated from the trunk when the body has been severely disfigured. Odontometry's association with stature determination in forensic odontology required an estimate to be established. Objective The objective of this study was to investigate and correlate stature (height) of the individual with the incisoapical length of the tooth Material and Method The study was conducted on 106 participants, in which 53 were female and 53 male cases aged between 21 and 45 years. The study parameters included incisoapical length of maxillary and mandibular central incisor, lateral incisor and canine of both sides measured using cone-beam computed tomography, and height of an individual recorded using stadiometer. Pearson's correlation coefficient was calculated to study the correlation. Results It is observed that the cervicoapical measurement of teeth does not show statistically significant correlation with the stature of the individual with the exception for tooth 22 (r = − 31, p = 0.02), 41(r = − 0.28, p = 0.04), and 42 (r = − 0.30, p = 0.02) among females and tooth 31 (r = − 0.35, p = 0.009) among males. Conclusion A very small number of research on an individual's stature in relation to incisoapical length has been identified in the literature. Gardner's syndrome has been recognized as a hereditary affliction that is autosomal in nature. This disorder is known to exhibit characteristics of familial adenomatous polyposis, of which it is also considered a variation. The features of this syndrome include the gradual development of osteomas and epidermoid cysts, including a characteristic feature that is the noted presence of intestinal polyps, which are generally multiple in number. Additionally, dental anomalies have been observed and recorded in a sizeable ratio of cases encompassing an increased frequency of multiple odontomas that are benign tumors linked to the development of a tooth and tooth agenesis/hypodontia that refers to developmental absence of one or more teeth. The other dental ascertainment includes abnormal morphology of the tooth/teeth as well as the presence of supernumerary teeth and impacted or unerupted teeth. This case report outlines the case of a 59-year-old male patient who had reported to the clinic, and was then diagnosed with Gardner's syndrome post a thorough examination. On radiographic examination, the manifestation of multiple osteomas in the frontal bone was revealed. The presence of a motley of diffused benign lesions of the bone in both the upper and lower jaw as well as the presence of an epidermoid cyst on the scalp was suggestive of an exemplar presentation of Gardner's syndrome. Objective: The demand for esthetics has increased in today's world and most parents prefer to preserve their children's primary anterior teeth until their natural exfoliation. However, an intracanal post is required to provide retention for reconstruction of severely damaged anterior teeth due to caries or trauma. Various materials and methods may be used for the fabrication of intracanal posts. This study assessed the fracture strength and fracture mode of primary canine teeth reconstructed with prefabricated and customized polyethylene and glass fiber posts. Materials and Methods: This in vitro study evaluated 60 extracted primary canine teeth in four groups (n = 15). After pulpectomy and post space preparation with 4 mm depth, composite resin post, prefabricated glass fiber post (Whitepost), customized glass fiber post (Interlig), or customized polyethylene fiber post (Ribbond) were placed in the root canals to provide retention, and the tooth crown was restored with bulk‐fill composite resin. The fracture strength was then measured in a universal testing machine. The fracture mode was also evaluated visually. Results: The mean fracture strength was 22.45 ± 5.06, 33.10 ± 8.5, 30.20 ± 7.33, and 32.61 ± 5.73 N/mm2 in the composite resin post, Whitepost, Interlig, and Ribbond groups, respectively. The fracture strength was significantly lower in the composite group than in the remaining three groups (p = 0.000). No other significant differences were found (p > 0.05). Also, no significant difference was observed among the study groups in the fracture mode (p = 0.241). Conclusion: The composite resin post yielded a significantly lower fracture strength than the prefabricated and customized glass and polyethylene fiber posts, but the fracture mode was not significantly different among the four groups. Objective: To evaluate canalis sinuosus (CS) and accessory canalis sinuosus (AC) morphology and their relationship with the impacted canine on cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images. Methods: The diameter and location of the CS, its distance from the nasal cavity (NC–CS), its distance from the buccal cortical plate (BC–CS), and its distance from the alveolar ridge crest (AR–CS) were evaluated on 1000 CBCT scans. The prevalence and termination of AC and the presence of impacted canines were also evaluated. Results: CS was detected in 89 (8.9%) of 1000 CBCTs. The mean CS diameter was found as 1.34 ± 0.53 mm. No statistically significant difference was found between gender, age, direction, and CS presence and diameter. CS was most frequently seen in regions 11 (23.6%) and 13 (23.6%). The average NC–CS, BC–CS, and AR–CS length was 6.14, 6.06 and 4.35 mm, respectively. AC was detected in 22 patients (24.71%). There was no statistically significant difference between the presence of AC and gender, age, CS diameter, NC–CS, BC–CS, and AR–CS distance. BC–CS length and AR–CS length were statistically significantly higher in patients with impacted canines. Conclusions: It should be kept in mind that the CS diameter, NC–CS, BC–CS, and AR–CS distance may increase in the presence of an impacted canine and the integrity of the neurovascular structure should be preserved. Purpose: To comprehensively analyze the palatal thickness of soft tissues and determine optimal regions for the placement of palatal orthodontic miniscrews. Methods: Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images on the coronal plane were obtained from 60 patients (30 female, 30 male; age range 19–45; mean age 32 ± 11), with 3-mm intervals in the regions of the canine (Ca), first premolar (Pr1), second premolar (Pr2), midpoint between the first and second molars (M1-M2), first molar (M1), second molar (M2) and midpalate. Results: The mucosal thickness measurements between the teeth showed significantly greater thickness in the Ca region at the 3 mm point, in the Pr1 region at the 6 mm point, and in the Pr2 region at the 9 and 12 mm points. At the 9 mm point, the Pr1 region demonstrated greater thickness than the M1-M2 whereas the Pr2 region was thicker than the M1 and M1-M2 regions. At the 12 and 15 mm points, the thickness increased from anterior to posterior: the Pr1 region was thinner than the Pr2, M1, and M2 regions and the Pr2 region was thinner than the M2 region. A schematization was devised for the optimal areas recommended for miniscrews in the palatal region. Conclusion: The mucosal thickness in the palatal region increases from anterior to posterior except the midpalatal region. Based on the results, in terms of soft tissue, the most suitable place for miniscrew placement is 6 mm from the gingival margin of the teeth and in the median portion of the palate. Interceptive orthodontics may be indicated in puppies exhibiting dental malocclusion with linguoverted deciduous mandibular canine teeth to alleviate pain and prevent teeth interlock, which may affect growth and development of the mandibles. Historically extraction of deciduous mandibular canine teeth has been recommended as soon as a malocclusion is identified, often as early as 6-8 weeks of age and no later than 12 weeks of age. This early surgical intervention of deciduous teeth extractions risks potential damage to the developing permanent canine teeth resulting in enamel defects often referred to as a Turner's tooth or Turner's hypoplasia. A search of medical records from five veterinary specialty dentistry practices was conducted to identify dogs 8-12 weeks of age who (a) underwent deciduous mandibular canine extractions for management of class 1 or class 2 malocclusion with linguoverted mandibular canine teeth, and (b) were seen for at least one recheck exam to assess for enamel defects on permanent mandibular canine teeth. Furthermore, data was collected to determine the number of dogs that required additional treatment after eruption of the permanent canine teeth due to linguoversion of the permanent canine teeth. All procedures were performed by a board-certified veterinary dentist™ or a supervised veterinary dentistry resident. Seventy-four dogs fit the inclusion criteria and had a total of 143 deciduous mandibular canine teeth extracted, out of which 13 dogs exhibited enamel defects affecting 21 permanent canine teeth. The 13 affected dogs represent a 17.5% cumulative incident rate 13/74 (95%CI 11-28%). Of all extracted teeth, 14.6% (21/143) had enamel defects affecting permanent canine teeth. Twenty-eight dogs required additional treatment to prevent the permanent mandibular canine teeth from causing trauma to the hard palate and gingiva which represented 37.8% (28/74) of all dogs in the study. Age and sex of the dog at the time of extraction were not found to be associated with the likelihood of incidence of enamel defects. This is the first reported rate of enamel defects on permanent mandibular canine teeth following extraction of deciduous mandibular canine teeth and is important to consider when advising or performing extraction of deciduous teeth in dogs. Background/Objectives: Many older adults living in long-term care (LTC) environments have varying numbers of retained natural teeth. The objective of this study was to assess the disease findings based on tooth type and estimate the role of tooth types in occlusion. Methods: We conducted clinical oral examinations of 276 LTC residents. The disease findings were analyzed for each tooth type and to determine their associations with dementia. Results: In total, 67.8% of the participants had molar teeth. Premolars/canines were often present as residual roots and had caries. Deepened periodontal pockets and higher plaque index (PI) values for molars had odds ratios of 2.5 (95% confidence interval [CI] of 1.59–3.91) and 1.61 (95% CI of 1.29–2.02), respectively. Participants with dementia were more likely to have incisors and premolars/canines in the form of root remnants and higher PI scores for all tooth types (p ≤ 0.01), as well as more deepened periodontal pockets in all teeth (p = 0.029), than those without dementia. The median number of remaining molars per participant was 3 out of a maximum of 12 (95% CI 3.4–4.0); thus, they often lacked occlusal contact. Conclusions: The LTC residents' molars were more prone to periodontal problems, whereas their premolars/canines often had caries or were present in the form of root remnants, especially in the participants with dementia. People's teeth should be treated in an easy-to-maintain way before they move into LTC to enable daily oral hygiene measures and maintain oral health. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
