This study investigates the potential use of dichos (colloquial Spanish sayings) in nutrition and health education for men of Mexican origin, focusing on their recognizability, traditional meanings, and health topic applicability. A qualitative study that included individual interviews (n = 12) and pile sort methodology to explore 16 dichos. Interviews discussed dicho recognizability and traditional meaning. The pile sort explored the applicability of dichos for health topics. Finally, participants elaborated on the potential utility of dichos for nutrition and health education. At-home, one-on-one interviews. Mexican-origin, native-Spanish-speaking males with a body mass index ≥ 30 kg/m2. The potential application of dichos for nutrition and health education. Dichos were scored for recognizability (total of 12 participants). The qualitative analysis involved 4 cycle coding for the identification of the traditional meaning and health topic applicability of dichos. Eleven of the 16 dichos were recognized and defined by 100% of participants. Qualitative analysis revealed the meanings of dichos that are applicable to the health topics of healthy eating, physical activity, health motivation, social support, and stress management. All participants supported the viability of dichos as a linguistic educational tool. Based on the understanding that language is a complex phenomenon that comprises cognitive, cultural, and formal components, this paper systematically focuses on the network of relationships between culture, language, and the communicative act with special consideration of the multidimensional, dynamic, and subtle phenomenon of interculturality as well as its linguistic assessment. This study first discusses in what ways the connection between language and culture is being considered in various areas of scientific discourse. Subsequently, the paper focuses on culturally oriented linguistic approaches, specifically three current and differing research directions that are investigated critically regarding their content profiles, namely (a) the Russian/post-Soviet linguoculturology (LC), (b) the Anglo-American cultural linguistics (CL), and (c) intercultural linguistics (IL) – situated primarily within the field of German Studies – which focuses on interculturality and multilingualism. It can be shown that the targeted field of research is shaped by rather different premises, theories, and methods. The three subfields share the general goal of describing language as a cultural phenomenon as well as culture as a linguistic phenomenon. However, CL predominantly focuses on the influence of culture on language, LC largely investigates the impact of language on culture, and IL addresses inter- and transculturality as its major focal point. Additionally, the underlying cultural concepts seem to diverge significantly: while CL and particularly IL firmly work with a dynamic, semiotic-constructivist understanding of language and culture, the LK publications are mostly based on a static, essentialist-normative viewpoint. Furthermore, the disciplinary positioning and the disposition of the content differ as well: CL and LC exhibit a distinctly cognitive orientation, while IL is based on a contrastive-linguistic and cultural science foundation. Overall, none of the exemplified approaches have yet established a complete theoretical matrix or broad theoretical coherence. The verb "bil-" is a fundamental building block of the Turkish language, frequently used and enriched with profound meanings. Extending beyond the simple notion of possessing knowledge, this verb can be employed in various contexts with numerous nuances. As one of the most basic verbs in Turkish, "bil-" plays a crucial role in communication, expression of thoughts, and exchange of information. It is commonly used in both daily conversations and academic texts. Through this verb, individuals understand each other, explore the world, and acquire new knowledge. This study, which examines the collocations and concepts associated with the verb "bil-" in Old Turkic inscriptions, aims to reflect the depths of the Turkish language. The research problem is to reveal the cultural linguistic reflections of the collocations and concepts formed with the verb "bil-" in Old Turkic inscriptions. In this study, the verb is examined from various perspectives, providing a comprehensive framework. By analyzing collocations and concepts, a different perspective on the subject is aimed to be offered. As a methodology, data obtained by scanning Old Turkic inscriptions and some old Uyghur sources are interpreted according to the theory of collocations and cultural linguistics, adopting an interdisciplinary approach that emphasizes the relationship between language and culture. The present study aims to investigate the portrayal of women in English and Persian proverbs using the multidisciplinary field of Cultural Linguistics as an alternative to critical discourse analysis. Utilizing a corpus analysis approach for Cultural Linguistics (Jensen 2017), 124 English and 186 Persian proverbs representing the theme of 'woman' were compared and contrasted cross-culturally. Results of grounded-theory driven analysis revealed: (a) while various cultural schemata and cultural metaphors reflecting both dark and bright sides of women in proverbs were unveiled, only one cultural category in Persian proverbs with no similar instance in English proverbs was revealed; and (b) in some English and Persian proverbs, interpreting cultural schemas predicates upon eliciting and understanding the cultural metaphors hidden in the proverbs. The results are discussed with reference to the potentiality of Cultural Linguistics as an analytical framework for paremiology that can provide an in-depth interpretation of proverbs as a culturally-loaded discourse. Translation of cultural conceptualizations in the war literature seems to be an overlooked area of research both in Translation Studies and cultural studies dealing with war. In this study, we employed the framework of Cultural Linguistics at the heart of which lies the notion of cultural cognition to analyse translation of cultural schemas and categories in four books selected from the genre of Iran–Iraq war literature. The analysis indicated that typical translation techniques might lead to a change of cultural identity and may not be able to adequately transfer cultural conceptualizations. Therefore, 'thick translation' is suggested as a better way of translating them. This study examines how the English language mediates Korean speakers' expressions and understanding of gender identity. Two groups of participants—a queer group and a general group—were asked to rate their familiarity with 21 English terms using a Likert scale, suggest corresponding Korean terms, and respond to an open-ended question on the role of English terms. The results indicate that the English terms of gender identity have provided labels for various concepts that are unnamed in the Korean language and have empowered queer speakers to assert their identity and have a sense of belonging. Many of the terms, however, were esoteric to those outside the queer community and created a barrier. The study calls for creating accessible language that can capture the experiences of queer Koreans and critically assessing Euro-American centric categories of sexual identities and language. As a cognitive process, metaphor objectifies mental concepts in such a tangible form that the study of human mental structure would be possible. The goal of this research is to study the conceptual domain of “hunting” and its negative representation in love “dating and marriage” based on the conceptual metaphor theory and cultural linguistics (Palmer, 1996; Sharifian, 2013). With a reference to the Persian corpus and Persian proverbs we studied the metaphor “marriage is hunting” and its negative representation. Three micro metaphors obtained were “marriage is hunting,” “marriage is theft,” and “marriage is captivity,” which through linguistic metaphoric expressions such as hunting, snapping, enthralling, grabbing, snatching, ensnaring, catching, trapping, capturing, enslaving, and harnessing all bearing a negative emotional connation both in the case of man or the woman. The research findings showed that we witness a negative metaphorical representation of hunting in “marriage”. Sometimes a woman is a valuable catch and the prey for a male hunter but she sometimes takes the role of a hunter and the man is the prey. The results showed that factors such as gender, commitment to cohabitation and the suitability of couples in terms of appearance, economy, age, celibacy and ethical orientation affect metaphorical representations. Introduction Metaphor is a cognitive process that represents abstract concepts in tangible form, enabling the study of human mental structures. Recently, there has been growing interest among scholars in exploring the ideological dimensions of metaphor. Gender and ideology are particularly relevant when examining conceptual areas like love and marriage. Cognitive linguistics has extensively studied the target domains of love and marriage, identifying numerous source domains used to conceptualize them. However, the source domain of hunting still requires further exploration from a gender perspective. This study aims to examine the conceptual metaphors of love, seduction, and hunting, focusing on gender and culture. Our research findings reveal a negative metaphorical representation of hunting in the context of dating and marriage. Sometimes, women are portrayed as valuable prey for male hunters, while in other instances, the roles are reversed. In this article, we address the following questions: 1) What are the micro-metaphors of the macro-metaphor "marriage is hunting" in the domain of love? 2) Which micro-metaphor has the highest frequency, and what accounts for its prevalence? 3) What factors contribute to the negative metaphorical representation of the macro-metaphor "marriage is hunting" in the context of dating and marriage? Our research is grounded in conceptual metaphor theory and cultural linguistics (Palmer, 1996; Sharifian, 2013) and relies on the Persian corpus and Persian proverbs to study the metaphor "marriage is hunting" and its negative representation. Methodology and Theoretical Framework This descriptive-analytical study utilizes a corpus of Persian language data extracted from 30 contemporary Persian works. To identify the conceptual metaphor "marriage is hunting," the following methods have been employed: Identification of words related to hunting and love, with a focus on the concept of "dating and marriage." This field explores the relationship between language, culture, and conceptualization. Cultural conceptualizations emerge through interactions within a cultural group, allowing its members to think collectively and in sync. These conceptualizations develop and evolve over time and across generations (Sharifian, 2013). To comprehend metaphors in a language, one must delve into the culture of the society. Proverbs play a crucial role in language, as they reflect the values and cultural norms of a society. Passed down through generations, they serve as a testament to the values of a nation. Findings In this article, we analyze proverbs to examine the cultural factors that give rise to negative representations within the conceptual metaphor "marriage is hunting." The research findings reveal a negative metaphorical representation of hunting in the context of dating and marriage. In some instances, a woman is portrayed as a valuable catch, with her male partner as the hunter. However, the roles can also be reversed, with the woman becoming the hunter and the man the prey. These representations are complex, but from a cognitive perspective, their significance lies in how they draw upon the source domain of hunting, shaping the thinking and reasoning about love and seduction in the texts under study. Using the Persian corpus and Persian proverbs as a reference point, we investigate the metaphor "marriage is hunting" and its negative representation. Our analysis identifies three micro-metaphors: "marriage is hunting," "marriage is theft," and "marriage is captivity." These metaphors employ linguistic expressions such as hunting, snapping, enthralling, grabbing, snatching, ensnaring, catching, trapping, capturing, enslaving, and harnessing to convey a negative emotional connotation, regardless of whether the subject is a man or a woman. Discussion and Conclusion This research aimed to explore the conceptual metaphor "marriage is hunting" and its negative portrayal in the context of dating and marriage. Our study was based on Lakoff's (1980) conceptual metaphor theory and drew upon cultural linguistics (Palmer, 1996; Sharifian, 2013). Metaphors serve as essential tools for cultural conceptualization. While they significantly aid in understanding life and the world, they also contribute to cultural understanding (Sharifian, 2015: 6). To analyze the negative metaphorical representation of the hunting domain in dating and marriage, we examined the cultural factors that contribute to this portrayal by analyzing Persian proverbs. Proverbs are a significant aspect of language, reflecting the values and cultural norms of society, and they are passed down from one generation to another. Our findings indicated that these metaphors sometimes convey negative connotations toward women and, at other times, toward men, influenced by prevailing social values. This suggests that societal ideology and cultural values impact the metaphorical representation of the concept of hunting in relation to marriage. In Iranian society, three crucial cultural factors influence the positive and negative emotional connotations of metaphorical representations in the hunting domain of dating and marriage. The study presents the author’s concept of optimizing the linguisticculturological aspect of the lexicographic representation of Russian phraseological units to foreign students. The relevance of the research is due to the linguistic-cultural value of Russian phraseology and the need to improve the techniques of its description in educational dictionaries. The aim of the study is to develop and implement effective methods of increasing the linguisticculturological value of a phraseographic text intended for a foreign student. Textbooks on the Russian language, academic and educational phraseological dictionaries, etymological dictionaries were used as the research material. The material selected for our own phraseographic projects was studied using methods of linguistic-culturological, historical and etymological analysis. At the stage of constructing a lexicographic text, the method of discursive linguisticcultural commenting of phraseological units was used. It is revealed that the linguisticculturological potential of traditional phraseographic sources - the educational etymological and the practical dictionary can significantly increase due to the use of interactive techniques for organizing the text of etymological paraphrase, including creative and analytical tasks that expand the linguistic-cultural horizons of the reader. The types of contextual illustrations that can increase the linguistic-culturological saturation of the traditional educational phraseological dictionary are determined. An innovative linguistic-culturological parameter of the bilingual educational dictionary is the comparative interpretation of images of correlative phraseological units of two languages. The new types of linguistic-culturological phraseographic sources include discursive etymological dictionaries, plot dictionaries in entertaining stories and travelogue dictionaries. All the developed innovative lexicographic techniques are implemented in the dictionaries of the Experimental Lexicographic Laboratory of Pskov University. This paper analyzes the phraseological units which consist of a noun that denotes an animal (or body part of an animal), and which basic structure represents an interaction between a man and an animal. However, in this text the phraseological material is approached from a linguocultural point of view and, depending on the meaning of the structural base, 8 thematic groups are distinguished. Working chiefly within the tenets of Cultural Linguistics (CL), this study examines the cultural and cognitive motivations that underlie selected death-oriented personal names among the Igbo of South-eastern Nigeria. Based on the cultural linguistic perspective, the analytical tool for the study is shaped by insights from cultural schemas, cultural categories and cultural metaphors as signifiers of ideation and social meaning. The cultural frames enable the language user to have a better understanding of the cultural and cognitive motivations that underlie the conceptualization of names and naming among the Igbo. Much has been done on the structure and sociological forms of Igbo personal names and their meanings, but only a few studies have been undertaken on the names that express the notions of death and dying in Igbo. More importantly, no previous study has used insights from Cultural Linguistics (CL) or the Conceptual Metaphor Theory (CMT) to explain the motivations for the preponderance of death-oriented names among the Igbo people. Thus, this study specifically aims to address the lacuna. The study reveals that the Igbo, like most African and other human societies, recognize and accept the inevitability of death. Consequently, they use language in diverse forms and contexts to express their perceptions of the horrors and pains associated with the inevitability of death. Songs, proverbs and ritual practices are some of the verbal and social semiotic forms through which the Igbo express their knowledge of and attitude toward death and dying. However, names and naming are the most vivid cultural cognitive patterns by which the Igbo show their understanding of the nature of death and dying and their psychological effects on the living. Constrained by space and scope, this study identified and classified six major death-oriented names among the Igbo, as follows: names that depict the overwhelming power of death; names that make an appeal to death; names that depict death as wicked/evil/terror; names that depict death as no respecter of wealth/social class; names that challenge/mock the assumed power of death; and names that depict death as an insensitive entity. The observation of social life in Poland reveals slow but systematic changes in the functioning of families. These changes are observable in the roles of fathers and mothers, as well as the role of a child. Media play a significant role in promoting the image of a child in a modern, post-traditional family. The article aims to reconstruct the media image of the child and childhood. Research material consists of titles and headlines of press texts published on two websites: dad:Hero and mama:Du. The methodological basis employs the assumptions of cultural linguistics and the processes of concept profiling. Detailed analysis focused on facets such as the expected child vs. unwanted child, the engaging child vs. demanding child, the child as a source of expenses, and the threatened child. In the material examined, no texts portrayed the child as happy or carefree. This fact is due to the self-help and guidance functions of the websites in question. The analysis reveals that a child, a member of a post-modernist family, organizes their life, serves as a source of both positive and negative emotions, and is a person to be taken care of, but also to be feared. A child can be both desired and unwanted. Sometimes, one needs to take a break from the child. Among the different ways to approach discourse-structuring patterns, semantic basic figures (Grundfiguren in German) are a versatile tool that helps to understand the semantic framework of discourses. Topoi, metaphors, and other argumentative and figurative elements can be traced back to such basic concepts. My essay identifies and analyses repetitions and variations in the realisation of two such figures – ‘difficulty’ and ‘austerity’ – in a corpus of concert reviews of Jean Sibelius’ Fourth Symphony. I show how these concepts are first established and how they can be found in both verbatim repetitions and lexical and constructional variations over a period spanning several decades. My approach is based on the observation that a constantly varied repetition of certain patterns and similarly structured semantic frames is effective in coining the image of an artwork in public discourse and reaching an intersubjective understanding of its meaning and content. The paper focuses on the identification and study of the features of cognitive metaphors of the past and related concepts in the Greek linguistic picture of the world. The analysis considers the nominations: ιστορία (history), κληρονομιά (heritage), παρελθόν (past) and αρχαιότητα (antiquity). The research sets main cognitive structures in the source domain that are inherent to all analyzed concepts. Metaphorization predominantly takes place around the image-scheme of the path (“sourcepath-goal”), personification and perception of the concepts in the target domain as objects. The path has a structure-shaping role: both linear and labyrinthine path models are registered, while the movement mostly occurs in the opposite direction with the focus on the starting point of the journey (the source). Ethno-specific feature includes orientational metaphor, which suggests that the past is up. The broad scope has personification (first of all, with social and professional roles), as well as objectification, based mostly on visibility or concealment of the objects, as well as on their physical characteristics. A distinctive feature is the perception of antiquities as neighbors that exist side by side with the modern population, and antiquity, on the contrary, as a poet communicating with poems. One can also highlight the perception of the past and heritage as exhibits – something that is exposed to the public and is source of pride. Besides, natural phenomena and the construction are the common source of metaphorization for the past, history, heritage and antiquity in the Greek linguistic picture of the world. more...

The research aims to examine the connection between language, culture, and environment by analyzing the representation of nature in Minangkabau proverbs and its cultural implications and cognitive awareness in traditional Minangkabau society. It is a descriptive study that analyzes meaning and cultural representation through a cultural linguistics approach. The research used 287 proverbs from various written Minangkabau resources, including tambo and books containing Minangkabau proverbs. The study focuses on three sustainability pillars: social, environmental, and economic. The research findings show that Minangkabau proverbs frequently utilize symbolism of nature and the environment to describe and reflect cultural values and rules of Minangkabau customs. The natural representations reveal the close relationship between the Minangkabau people and nature and the cognitive awareness and shared knowledge passed down from generation to generation. The results of this study highlight the need for further research on Minangkabau proverbs to explore cultural values and wisdom that can support program sustainability. Emotional prosody is the paralinguistic elements of language that interact with verbal content to express emotion. It also demonstrates the complex relationship between voice expression and emotional experience, highlighting the depth to which humans can express complex emotions beyond words. This qualitative study investigated the prosodic features associated with the emotional expression of anger in Langkat Malay speech. It focused on variations in pitch, loudness, and tempo among speakers from different socio-economic backgrounds. The aims are to explain how emotions are encoded in speech; and to highlight the influence of cultural and social contexts on emotional expression through prosody. This study employed a qualitative method. The data were collected from 40 native Langkat Malay speakers, divided evenly between individuals from the nobility and the general populace, encompassing a range of ages from 20 to 50 years. The samples were collected, processed, and analyzed using Praat software. The study then looked at the prosodic aspects of emotional speech in terms of its acoustic characteristics. The results showed that louder, faster tempos, and higher pitches are used to indicate anger. The study also found differences between the socioeconomic classes, with the nobles exhibiting more intense and intricate pitch contours in their angry reactions than the ordinary public. It can be concluded that within the Langkat Malay group, cultural and socioeconomic influences modulate prosodic aspects of emotional manifestation. This study is expected to disclose implications for speech therapy, language instruction, and the creation of emotionally intelligent artificial intelligence systems. Exocentric compounds, also referred to as bahuvrihi compounds, are distinguishable from other classes of compounds, e.g., endocentric, in the ground that their meanings are unpredictable and idiosyncratic. For this single most important reason, these compounds have been marginalized and didn't receive as closer attention as the other classes. But the question is, are these types of choices really random? Their mere scale of productivity would deny the assumption that they are random and unsystematic. This paper originates in the assumption that these compounds in fact lend sufficient evidence that their formation and 'idiosyncratic' interpretation is on the other hand very systematic and can be explained elegantly if we bring into perspective the cultural aspect which regulates their formation through the mechanism of metonymic/metaphoric relations. In order to substantiate the claim, this study designed an exercise for Punjabi language speakers/experts where they were given novel (non-prevalent) exocentric compounds and were asked to interpret them. The study lent a great deal of support to the view adopted that the culturally shared knowledge allowed the respondents to interpret these exocentric compounds fairly correctly. The results are encouraging that the cultural aspect of the compounds holds true which explains the assumption that these types of compounds are systematic and a rule governed phenomenon. This article addresses some reasons and requirements for intercultural theologising as boundary-crossing interaction to be decolonised and hold decolonising potential itself. Decolonialism being concerned with both those in ‘marginalised’ and in ‘privileged’ positions, this article focusses on some of the latter’s challenges, responsibilities and opportunities. Grounding the argument in writings of scholars from disciplines like linguistics, cultural anthropology, decolonial studies and various strands of theology both from the Global South and the Global West, epistemological motivators for a decolonising theology will be sketched in the first step. The second step involves a consideration of an appropriate methodology called ‘chosen vulnerability’. Central to it would be the learning and using of vernacular languages in order to move towards cross-cultural understanding from emic perspectives. In step three, an attempt at implementing such will be portrayed that was a core component of a recently completed interdisciplinary PhD project. Based on contextual learning of isiXhosa, several church-related concepts in English and isiXhosa were investigated and compared in a subsidiary study. The findings are used to illustrate how chosen vulnerability can enable humble contributions to decolonising theologies. This is achieved through emic approaches and perspectivism. The relationship between language, culture, and cognition is a key aspect within the interdisciplinary feild of cultural linguistics research. It attempts to describe how language reflects and shows cultural norms, values, and beliefs, throught cognitive frameworks like conceptualization, schema, and categorization. Meanwhile, studies in cognitive linguistics also have shown that language is formed based on conceptualizations and schemas directly influenced by culture. This paper, in its theoretical section, reviews the key concepts of cultural linguistics and its background. Additionally, it presents a case study on the Persian language, aiming to examine the cultural conceptualizations of “politeness” and the cultural schema of Iranian compliment Ta’arof by reviewing and analysing various examples. The analysis indicates that selecting and using specific language features can serve as indicators of conceptualizations or of specific cognitive schemas rooted in culture, consequently confirming the notion that culture significantly shapes language. more...

Body part names are productive sources of metaphoric and metonymic expressions, which constitute coherent constructions in the languages. These cognitive cultural models are subconsciously known to all cultural community members (D’Andrade 1992). In the paper, I explore how culture influences the conceptualizations of body parts. The theoretical framework is Cultural Linguistics (Sharifian 2017), which investigates cultural conceptualizations in language. The data and analysis presented here consider the uses of ‘hand’ and ‘hair’ metaphors and metonymies in Hungarian archaic prayers, which represent a specific subculture mingling elements of the Christian religion with other (pagan or shamanistic) belief systems. The corpus of the study is Erdélyi’s collection of 321 archaic prayers (2013 [1976]), from which all representations of ‘hand’ and ‘hair’ are selected and conceptually analysed. The results show that 1) the figurative functions of the two body parts partly correspond to metaphors which are also found in secular Hungarian (e.g. hand for help, hand for care, hand for action); however, in the archaic prayers, they often take form in specific meanings (hand for help to get into heaven, hand for providence, hand for control); 2) their figurative uses strongly rely on cultural schemas which are attached to people and events. This article investigates the human character represented in Dutch proverbs related to water. The research method used is a qualitative approach with a content analysis design. Data were collected from Dutch proverb dictionaries published in the Netherlands and Dutch-Indonesian dictionaries published in Indonesia. The data were analyzed using cultural linguistic theory with associative-conceptual analysis techniques. The research results showed that the proverb of water in the Dutch language represents human characters which are divided into positive and negative categories. The positive characters found describe people who are optimistic, quiet, willing to compromise, brave, and honest which are the wisdom found in Dutch society. The proverbs of water also reveal negative human characters such as people who like to insinuate, who are exaggerative, who like to look for other people’s mistakes, and who seek opportunities from the suffering of others. Working towards reconciliation, the undoing of structural inequalities and segregation often means transforming 'white spaces' into less white spaces, including but not restricted to Christian communities. However, it is often overlooked that greater representation of people of colour does not automatically challenge the epistemic authority that tends to rest with white people and/or Eurocentric knowledge systems.This was the backdrop of a study carried out in a multi-'racial' South African congregation. The purpose was to understand how white people conceptualised and worked for reconciliation in a context they were culturally dominating. A constructivist grounded theory approach was used to generate and analyse data through ethnographic methods and relationship-based learning of isiXhosa.This article presents the problem identified – the 'coloniality of knowledge' in 'reconciling' Christian communities. To challenge it and to render theologising more relevant in the intercultural contact zone, several concrete suggestions are subsequently made. They are focussed on creating environments favourable to embracing cultural-linguistic differences and to harnessing them for increased gospel relevance and epistemic equality. The value and the cost of such transformation will be discussed in the end with reference to the South African context. Intradisciplinary and/or interdisciplinary implications: Seeking relationships on the terms of the 'other' enables more profound ways of sharing different experiences of the gospel. In the present paper, I investigate the meanings of the quasi-copula 'sit' in European and non-European languages. Preliminary research suggests that languages can be grouped according to whether or not the quasi-copula verb 'sit' is used at all and, if so, what semantic constraints are imposed on its use. The methodological question is how to relate the semantics of the quasi-copula 'sit' to the material culture surrounding the speakers of the lan-guage. To this end, the methods of cognitive linguistics will be employed. First, I will try to identify the image schemas that serve as a background for the formation of the characteristic meanings, and then I will try to infer the relationship between the image schemas and the material culture. The media play a significant role in promoting a new model of motherhood, observed in social life in Poland. The aim of this article is to reconstruct the media's portrayal of motherhood and maternity. The research material comprises titles and leads of press articles published on the online website mama:Du. The methodological foundation is drawn from the premises of cultural linguistics and the processes of concept profiling. The research material distinguishes profiles such as a suffering and exhausted mother, a single mother, an independent mother, a (non)working mother, and a mother as a woman. Analysis indicates that despite changes in the social perception of a woman's role, the website presents a unidimensional image of motherhood, reducing women to the mother-child dyad. This image aligns with the stereotype of the mother as a caregiver. However, there are sparse signals of overturning these prevalent stereotypes in texts showcasing mothers who call for alteration of established norms. Nevertheless, the feminine aspect of a mother, as a woman who takes care of herself and has her own interests beyond caregiving duties, remains invisible. This article presents a corpus-based Cultural-Linguistic study of the usage of the word honour in Pakistani and Indian Englishes, addressing underlying cultural conceptualizations of the notion of honor. Honor emerges as a complex cultural model which involves several cultural schemas, cultural categories and other cultural conceptualizations, in which women are cast as responsible protectors and upholders of the honor of men, families, and communities, their bodies being the very locus of men's honor. In the early hours of 12 May 2020, Professor Farzad Sharifian unexpectedly passed away after a short illness. We in RELP have absolutely missed Farzad Sharifian (RIP) as one of our vibrant and valued Editorial Board members and a wholly decent, wonderful gentleman. Highly awarded as a competent researcher, Farzad was a leading, prolific scholar and an outstanding, inspirational figure in Cultural Linguistics, an internationally recognized, flourishing field of inquiry that he successfully developed on the foundation laid by Palmer (1996). Farzad will undoubtedly live on not only in his numerous presentations and publications but also in the hearts and minds of all those who, like us, respected Farzad personally or professionally (across his discipline) nationally and internationally, including his family, friends, academic fellows, and former students. To celebrate his incredible, life-long contributions to the field, RELP decided to publish a selected bibliography of his seminal, influential works, the majority of which were devoted to Cultural Linguistics, disseminated in the form of books, book chapters, and journal articles. The article deals with the Chinese vernacular urbanonyms as part of the modern urban language and culture. The author studied the origins and use of popular urbanonyms with their speech practices and nominative creativity. The research involved some methods of cultural and social linguistics, as well as an online questionnaire of Chengdu citizens. The respondents saw vernacular urbanonyms as a sign of familiarity with the urban environment. Such words were popular with young people and working-age residents, regardless of their education background. In general, vernacular urbanonyms were seen as part of informal interpersonal communication and were evaluated quite positively. According to the respondents, vernacular urbanonyms emerge for the following reasons. They contrast with boring official names because they are "vivid" and "lively", with emotional, evaluative and figurative connotations. They help to distinguish between similar environmental objects with the same functions. They are shorter than official names. They identify nameless urban objects. They preserve old names that are out of official use. The onomasiological analysis established that vernacular urbanonyms verbalize a number of motives, e.g., a landmark, a reinterpretation of official urban names, a reduced official name, a metaphor, phonetic similarity with the official name, etc. As a result of social practices of ordinary city culture, vernacular urbanonyms reflect the values of everyday city life, e.g., wayfinding, linguistic economy, expressiveness, and subjectivity. What kind of actions or reactions can sudden good news elicit in the experiencer? How can these actions/reactions be cognitively interpreted by others? Is there a nexus between social realities and the gospel? Using these questions as a spark, this article critically examines the cultural conceptualisations in Ijo Odi, a Yoruba gospel ballad by Elijah Akintunde. Drawing insights from Cultural Linguistics, this study argues that cultural symbols and structures (schemas, categories, and metaphors) are deployed in gospel music to capture the message of liberation from socio-economic challenges. Specifically, DANCE and DEAFNESS are mapped to express the kind of PERPLEXITY and ABSURDITY that characterise reaction to SUDDEN PLEASANT NEWS. The song also invokes cognitive schemas and cultural memories of dance, cultural class categories and metaphorization of dance and its internalized network of cognitive associations in the Yoruba world view to project the message of prosperity as a miracle. The study concludes that language is firmly grounded in cultural cognition and the complex socio-economic lives of Nigerians can be captured in the negotiation of spirituality in gospel songs. The formation of linguistic-cultural competence in the process of teaching Russian as a non-native language is becoming a priority in modern linguodidactics, in particular in the educational space of Kazakhstan. The relevance of the study is in the need to form and develop a fully educated secondary linguistic personality in the multilingual environment of modern society. This requires applying anthropocentric principle in teaching Russian as a linguistic-cultural phenomenon. The aim of the study is to form students' linguistic-cultural competence in precepting the features of the Russian picture of the world, traditional values, and mentality of the Russian ethnic group. The material of the study includes associative dictionaries of the Russian and Kazakh languages, the results of associative experiments with schoolchildren, scientific sources on psycholinguistics and cultural linguistics, Kazakh manuals and textbooks on the Russian language (in schools with Russian/Kazakh language of teaching). In the work comparative and associative experiments, pilot survey were used, as well as the methods of structuring (associative semantic gestalt according to the method of Yu.N. Karaulov), linguistic and cultural commentary, modeling situational exercises and analysis of communicative-speech acts. The results of the study illustrate the specificity of students' ethnolinguistic awareness at the associative level. The relevance of linguistic and cultural commentary for widening students' ethno-mental outlook and organising adequate intercultural dialogues is grounded. Juraj Dolník belongs to the most notable Slovak linguists, next to Ján Horecký (1920 – 2006) or Jozef Mistrík (1921 – 2000). His research areas comprise mainly general linguistics, Slovak studies and German studies. In the synchronic Slovak studies, he has devoted himself thoroughly to the study of lexicology, as well as to individual aspects of cultural stylistics, sociolinguistics and linguistic pragmatics. His ideas about the linguistic culture have become significant stimuli for the Slovak linguistic and cultural theory and language counseling practice. He has also laid the theoretical foundations for studies of linguistic otherness in the Slovak linguistic environment. As a distinguished professor emeritus, he authored a modern trilogy about language and society (2017 – 2021), thus providing further conspicuous methodological and theoretical inspirations for Slovak linguistics, and, in a wider context, also for Slavic linguistics of the 21st century. The purpose of the work is to cover the views of Polish-German cultural historian and Slavist A. Brückner on the issue of German-Slavic cultural dialogue, which is key in the scientist's scientific and journalistic work. The research methodology is based on a comprehensive and interdisciplinary approach to solving the issue, a combination of both general scientific principles and research methods, as well as special ones, however, the basis of the theoretical and methodological tools when studying the issue of scientific development of the topic of intercultural dialogue by A. Brückner were the methods of modern cultural studies (biographical, method of factor analysis, content analysis, classification). The scientific novelty of the publication consists in the formulation of a complex, multi-level issue, which has hardly been researched in Ukrainian and foreign cultural studies. For the first time in national cultural studies, a complex and comprehensive study of A. Brückner's views on the issue of cultural interactions between Germanic and Slavic worlds is proposed, the influence of Aleksander Brückner's life circumstances on the formation and evolution of his cultural concepts is determined. Conclusions. The article points up the thesis about the ambiguity and controversy of A. Brückner's scientific views on the issue of cultural contacts between Slavs and Germans, who, according to the scientist, intersected and interacted on the territory of Poland. It is stressed that the specific nature of Aleksander Brückner's cultural generalisations is attributed to his linguistic approach to solving the debatable issues of intercultural relations since the Berlin professor considered language to be one of the main categories of culture and even equated the concepts of "culture" and "language" in his works. The attitude of A. Brückner's contemporaries to his scientific work is determined, which was revealed in numerous critical reviews by such outstanding representatives of Polish linguistics as J.
