The historiography on religious otherness in art has analysed separately the Muslim signs and those of the Jew, as if this differentiation was due to an iconographical classification already conceived by medieval societies. However, it is known that certain artworks cannot adapt to an epistemological framework created by a taxonomy of figurative production. This paper selects a significant group of images that combine equally Muslim and Jewish symbols in order to look at the visual interrelation proposed between these two cultures. It frames the images in their own historical context and it analyses them as a projection of interreligious coexistence in the four main realms which belonged to the Crown of Aragon between 1390 and 1450.

The religious beliefs of conversos, individuals of Jewish origin who converted either forcibly or voluntarily to Christianity in 1391 and during the following century, have occupied a central place in the history of minorities in late medieval and Early Modern Iberia. Nevertheless, most take their starting point in the establishment of the royal Inquisition by the end of the century or, at the earliest, in the Toledo revolt of 1449. By that time, however, conversos had been living as and among Christians all over the peninsula for at least fifty years. In this article, I examine how the massive conversion of Valencia's Jewish community, one of the largest in the Crown of Aragon, prompted the monarchy to correct the burial practices of conversos, which may have reflected their religious heterodoxy, through intervention in their confraternities and the Christianisation of their funerary sites. For this case, I investigate unpublished private documentation preserved in notarial records. From a statistical sample of more than 1,850 Old Christian and a 100 converso testaments, I analyse both the aforementioned intervention by the monarchy and its effectiveness until the establishment of the royal Inquisition in Valencia in 1482. The present article aims to analyze the social representativeness of post mortem inventories as a valuable source for studying consumer behavior and standards of living in pre-industrial Europe. Specifically, this article examines the possibilities that Catalan after-death inventories have to offer considering their lack of monetary valuations. With the aim to understand the nature and limits of this source, this paper will use the town of Vic and its rich archives as its case study. For this purpose, this article starts by examining the institutional framework that regulated the elaboration of after-death inventories in late medieval Catalonia. This theoretical approach will be complemented with a cross-analysis of the after-death inventories of Vic, alongside the burial records and the tallas or direct taxation on wealth of this same town, in order to determine the ‘actual’ coverage of late medieval Catalan after-death inventories. Finally, the study will assess the possibilities that alternative wealth indicators may offer to socially classify after-death inventories without monetary valuations in order to establish a solid methodological foundation essential for conducting a rigorous historical analysis of pre-industrial consumption patterns in Catalonia and, by extension, all the Crown of Aragon.

Between 1323 and 1421, the “fet de Sardenya" and the conquest of Corsica were one of the main issues the king of Aragon had to face. In the midst of a long war against the Commune of Genoa, the domination of the islands was one of the key issues in Aragonese diplomacy. The difficult conquest of the Regnum Sardiniae et Corsicae involved both the kings of Aragon and their Crown princes. This study sheds light upon the range of relations, from submission to revolt, between the kings and their primogènits within the Crown of Aragon.

The study of matrimonial negotiations previously characterised by the perception of the Crown Princes as mere objects of negotiation in diplomatic affairs, reveals a different perspective in the light of the Anglo-Aragonese marriage project of 1268-1285. Peter of Aragon and his son Alfonso were indeed central players in these negotiations. The article explores the active role that certain royal heirs play in diplomatic affairs. This new role accompanied the establishment of the principle of succession in the Crown of Aragon in the 13th century, which transformed the figure of the crown prince into an embodiment of the future of the dynasty. His involvement in diplomatic affairs thus enables him to prepare for his future role as king, but also to consider diplomatic actions in the long term of the dynasty, beyond the mere duration of a reign.

In this paper, we analyse the different meanings that can be attributed to the word « violence » in the world of medieval falconry. Based on documentation from the ancient Crowns of Castile and Aragon during the late Middle Ages and the early Modern Era, as well as the treatises that the Castilian and Catalan traditions produced within the discipline of hunting with birds, we characterize this violence in the sense of « force exerted against nature », as well as aggression against birds and their nests as property with high economic value, crimes that were codified in the legislative bodies of the time.

This paper deals with a key issue for the understanding of late medieval societies: the forms of ownership and systems of exploitation of land, as well as the land market. Thus, through the case of Zaragoza between 1270-1370, answers are provided to questions related to the people who owned or exploited the land surrounding the city and the conditions under which they did so. It also provides data on the land market through the study of leases and property sales and purchases. This has been possible thanks to the study of almost three thousand documents, mainly unpublished. In short, the aim is to shed light on key aspects of agrarian dynamics in the peninsular urban environment of the late Middle Ages. A previously unknown fragmentary songbook at the Archives of Barcelona Cathedral (Barcelona, Arxiu de la Catedral, Miscel·lània, 23/1-12) transmits 17 troubadour poems, mainly the work of Peire Cardenal. The provenance is still to be ascertained but it could well have been in the ACB since the Middle Ages. The extant 13 paper leaves of this new Catalan troubadour manuscript witness probably constituted a (now defective) quire and have a striking similarity with another Catalan troubadour fragment known as Mh (Madrid, Real Academia de la Historia, 9-24-6/4579, n. 3). This new witness provides an additional, very interesting, piece for the reconstruction of the medieval circulation of troubadour lyrics in Catalan lands and beyond. The proposed siglum for this fragment is Bc.

In this paper we present an analysis of the song O que Valença conquereu by the Galician-Portuguese troubadour, Pero da Ponte, dedicated to King of Aragon, James I the Conqueror, composed on the occasion of his conquest of Valencia in 1238. Within the Galician-Portuguese poetic tradition, references to the Crown of Aragon were not frequent, and when they did appear it was usually in a satirical/humorous context. In this article we present the state of research on Pero da Ponte’s potential links with the Aragonese court, and we situate his work in relation to the realities of both the Galician-Portuguese and Occitan poetic traditions. We present a detailed genre analysis of the song, pointing out the need to unify the genological terminology and offering a different perspective on the formal layer of the composition we are studying. We also make a comparison between how the Occitan-speaking troubadours portrayed James I in their works and how Pero da Ponte did, showing how the content of the work, the poetic devices used by the troubadour and the overall tone of the song place it in the group of poems dedicated to King of Aragon.

In south-western Europe, the transition from pre-modern polities to modern states started in the central decades of the eighteenth century. This article explores why and how the plural, judicial and polycentric practices that structured social and political life before circa 1750 were progressively replaced by more unified, administrative and hierarchical repertoires of practices. The article rethinks the formation of the state through the conflicts over the debt of four municipalities of the former Crown of Aragon in the monarchies of Spain, the Savoy and the Two Sicilies. The global wars of the mid-eighteenth century and the subsequent extraordinary fiscal pressure fuelled local conflicts that led to the collapse of the ancient practices that structured life in common. However, the new social and political arrangements that were born out of the ancient polities and started replacing them were not imposed from above, but rather ideated, negotiated and implemented by a myriad of local actors and corporations. The article asserts that local realities were much more complex and polyhedric than what has traditionally been stated. As in other European regions, in the south-western polities of the Old Continent the modern state also emerged, first and foremost, from below. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Starting in the 1340s, the Crown of Aragon strengthened its position in the Western Mediterranean by absorbing the Kingdom of Majorca (1343), reincorporating the realm of Sicily (1392) and securing its control over constantly rebellious Sardinia (1420). To govern those territories, which were distant from the royal court and separated by sea, the kings of Aragon developed a pervasive information strategy that facilitated the retrieval of data from their archives and the transformation of that data into useful knowledge that kept them informed about the three islands' administration. The monarchs developed regional series of registers specifically dedicated to Majorca, Sardinia and Sicily in which orders and ordinances pertaining to the islands were recorded and they created or strengthened territorial archives for preserving records and accounts produced in the localities. They also relied on a network of accountable officers and informants who updated them via official and unofficial letters and, finally, they gathered intelligence using envoys who travelled continuously across the Mediterranean to inform the Crown on a vast range of affairs pertaining to the islands. This essay explores these topics during the long fourteenth century, using the records and correspondence preserved in various archives of the Catalan-Aragonese world and emphasizing the role of both the written word and oral communication for ruling a late-medieval composite polity like the Crown of Aragon. The death of King Martin the Humane on 31 May 1412 left the throne of the Crown of Aragon without a direct heir, despite the diferent degrees of kinship of those aspiring to inherit it. The predisposition of the kingdoms’ political society to participate in an investigation into their rights until the best candidate was determined ushered in a new stage in the development of mediaeval parliamentarism. Simultaneously, the aspirants and their supporters among the nobility, urban elites and regents of the governing institutions participated in an increasing wave of violence and even open warfare over the years of the interregnum in an effort to secure the crown.

The purpose of this study is to examine for the first time the formation, composition, and functioning of the houses of three unmarried princesses (infantas) of late fourteenth-century Spain; to consider the purposes of the houses and situate them within the complex galaxy of households belonging to kings and princes of the time; and, finally, to propose some subjects worthy of further investigation.

The court service of queens and infantas demonstrates the complexity and changing nature of its composition over time. These are not only changes brought about by the needs of the service itself, but also by political issues, family alliances, and questions of representation. The courtly customs of each kingdom generate a particular identity, while at the same time offering protection to their caregivers and safeguarding the interests of their kingdom of origin. This paper looks at the particular case of the entourage that accompanied Leonor of Aragon on her first trip to Castile (1366), to celebrate the entry into the kingdom of Enrique of Trastamara, and his subsequent coronation. This episode was selected because it combines the incorporation of the Infanta into the entourage of her future mother-in-law, Juana Manuel de Villena, long before her marriage, and also because it reveals the strength of the political and military interests of her father, King Pedro IV of Aragon. As the Infanta was an eight-year-old maid, the role of her officers and servants is key, due to the tasks they performed and the decisions they took to protect the Infanta and the image of the Crown of Aragon.

This paper analyses Violant’s household as Duchess of Girona from 1384 to 1386. This period is fundamental as it will allow us to understand her entourage after the fiasco of the General Parliaments of Monzón (1382-1384) until the previous months to ascend to the throne as Queen Consort of Aragon. The paper presents the sources available, the events of the General Parliaments, the composition of Violant’s household, and an approximation of its maintenance cost.

This article studies the presence of the Crown of Aragon in Rome through the images that represented it during the transition between the Middle Ages and the Early Modern Period. Unpublished documentary evidence reveals the establishment of the iconographic type of the Virgin of Montserrat to represent this community since the foundation of a confraternity named after her (1506), so replacing the arms of this Crown used previously. The aim is to describe these images, to reconstruct where and when were employed, and to analyse how contributed to the development of an image of power. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article examines the public service roles performed by Muslims and Jews for municipal governments within late-medieval Iberia through the analysis of a largely unexamined body of municipal records from the city of Tortosa in comparison with a diversity of other cases. The assessment of various contractual public works projects of different sizes conducted by ethno-religiously mixed and homogeneous artisans and laborers serves to contextualize the primary focus of the study: the activity of salaried and contractual Muslim musicians, who played and sounded their instruments with their Christian counterparts in support of diverse events throughout the year, decade after decade, all at the direction of the city's governing Christian elites. This survey of public service by non-Christians provides a means to evaluate and make recommendations regarding the methodologies and models utilized by scholars to conceptualize and analyze premodern interfaith interaction within the context of Christian hegemony.
