This study examines tennis injuries in German league players, with a particular emphasis on the impact of racquet properties and court surfaces, distinguishing between chronic and acute injuries.Patients and Methods: Retrospectively analyzing data from 600 tennis players over a 1.5-year period, a standardized questionnaire covered anthropometrics, injury characteristics, equipment usage, and court surface conditions.Results: The study identified 1012 tennis-related injuries, averaging 1.7 per player. Acute injuries predominantly affected the lower extremity (56%), with ankle injuries being the most prevalent, and ligaments were the most commonly affected structures (36.4%). Chronic complaints (reported by 364 athletes) focused on the upper extremity (63.2%), primarily tendon injuries (56.8%). Racket properties exhibited no significant impact on chronic upper extremity injuries.Conclusion: This study highlights a high incidence of acute lower extremity injuries, especially ankle ligament injuries, among German league tennis players. It offers crucial insights for devising targeted injury prevention strategies applicable to amateur, semi-professional, and professional tennis players, despite finding no significant link between racquet material and chronic upper extremity injuries.Keywords: tennis, injury, epidemiology, court surface, racquet material, ankle, ligament

The purpose of this study is to analyze the match statistics of men and women tennis players in the singles category in the 2019 Grand Slam tennis tournaments (Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon, US Open) according to different court surfaces. Winning matches in 1004 competitions made up of 250 men's singles and 252 women's singles played on hard court (US Open and Australian Open); 127 men's singles and 122 women's singles played on the clay court (French Open); and 127 men's singles and 126 women's singles played on grass court (Wimbledon) were analyzed. SPSS 22.0 statistical package program was used to evaluate the data and find the calculated values. As the data showed normal distribution, One-Way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was used for comparisons of more than two sets. Tukey HSD multiple comparison test was used to determine the source of significant differences as a result of ANOVA. The level of significance in the study was taken as 0.05. It was determined that ace in women athletes, winning % on 1st serve, unforced error and the fastest service variables differ significantly based on the court grounds (p lt;0.05). In male athletes, it was determined that ace, double fault, winning % on 1st serve, break points won, unforced errors, fastest service and match duration variables differ significantly according to court surfaces (p lt;0.05). As a result, the findings show that the game elements that affect the outcome of the match are affected by the court surface and players tend to change their game patterns, in other words, the tactical structure of the important game elements that will make the match win and to adapt themselves to the playing court surface.

This study analysed and compared the physical and technical demands of professional wheelchair tennis (WT) on different surfaces (clay [C], hard [H] and grass [G] courts). A total of 6,720 shots from thirteen matches played by the best ten professional WT players was analysed. Physical demands (e.g., working time, resting time, shots per point ...) and technical and tactical parameters (e.g., serve, effectivity, winner stroke, shots with two bounces ...) were recorded and analysed. Most physical parameters (points, shots, duration) differed according to the surface (H > C > G). Point length and shot per point were longer on H, and lower on C and G surfaces (p < 0.001). Differences in technical performance were found mainly between C and G courts, with a high use of volleys on G but fewer winners (p < 0.01). The main finding indicates that the physical and technical demands facing professional WT players differed by surface, showing that the H surface involves a higher external load than the other surfaces. Coaches can use this information to adapt their players' style depending on the playing surface as well as to design specific training drills according to the surface of play. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The performance characteristics of elite tennis match-play differ depending on court surface. However, the performance characteristics (e.g. aces, first serve points won, forced errors) most associated with success on different surfaces are currently unknown. With three weeks typically separating Roland Garros and Wimbledon, the transition from clay to grass courts, whereby players must adapt their game style between surfaces, is crucial to understand. Using the recently validated PWOL method, we analysed 984 singles matches across the 2016 and 2017 Roland Garros and Wimbledon tournaments, to identify the most important performance characteristics in clay and grass court tennis. Results revealed that points won of 0-4 shot rally length, first serve points won and baseline points won were most strongly associated with success for both sexes; serve-related characteristics (aces, double faults and average first serve speed) were among the least associated with success. Furthermore, winning short points (points of 0-4 shots) was more closely associated with success than winning medium-length (5-8 shots) and long points (9+ shots). To be representative of match-play, findings suggest that players should afford sufficient practise time to short rallies and point-ending strategies during the clay and grass court seasons, rather than over-emphasising long rallies. The article presents the results of a study which investigated the effect of various playing surfaces on the blood lactate and heart rate levels of tennis players. An overview of related previous research is provided, along with details of the experimental protocol, which compared clay tennis courts to resin courts.

The purpose of this study was to compare various metabolic and functional responses while playing tennis on clay and hard courts. Twelve 90-minute matches were played (6 on clay courts and 6 on hard courts) by 4 nationally ranked players. During the on-court tests, oxygen uptake (O2) and heart rate (HR) were measured using portable systems. Capillary blood lactate concentration (LA) was measured every 10 minutes. Additionally, distance ran, playing time, resting time, and exercise to rest ratio were monitored by time-motion analysis. The statistical analysis showed that playing time was higher on clay courts than on hard courts (p < 0.05), and resting time on clay courts and hard courts was not statistically different (p > 0.05). The exercise to rest ratio was affected by the interaction between playing time and resting time, showing a longer recovery time per unit of exercise on hard courts than on clay courts (p < 0.05). Distance ran, mean HR, and mean LA were significantly higher on clay courts than on hard courts (p < 0.05). There was less fluctuation of the O2 response on clay courts than on hard courts. Therefore, it is suggested that conditioning programs should be adjusted according to the playing surface to account for the longer playing time, greater exercise to rest ratio, increased HR and LA, and a more steady pattern of O2 seen on clay courts.
