- Abstract
Fabrizio De Donno's volume contributes significantly to the reconstruction of the relationship between orientalist production and power in Italy. De Donno analyzes the Italian reception of European Orientalism, connecting it to Risorgimento and Fascist ideologies and identity politics and to the construction of the nation-state. Serafini reads De Donno's text alongside other postcolonial studies, and above all in relation to Edward W. Said's famous Orientalism. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ramón Illán Bacca is one of the most representative novelists of the second half of the twentieth century of the Colombian Caribbean region for his humor inclusion, the record of popular media culture and the urban Caribbean area. This study analyzes how Bacca's representations of the Chinese, both in his newspaper articles and in his novels Deborah Kruel (2001) and La mujer barbuda (2011), reproduce the orientalist and sinophobic stereotypes of the Chinese as an inadmissible Otherness within the project of the Colombian universal Caribbean. This study shows the limits of the inclusion of difference in this cosmopolitan universalistic ideal. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

9. MODERN NEGOTIATIONS: THE INTERPLAY BETWEEN PUBLIC AND PRIVATE LIFE IN ROMANIAN MODERNIST LITERATURE.

COTOI, AMALIA
- Abstract
Drawing on Modernist Studies, Critical Theory and the work of Bruno Latour, the aim of my paper is to explore how Romanian modernist literature from the late 19th century to the first three decades of the 20th century engages with, participates in, and contributes to a culture of modernity. I will investigate the way in which Romanian modernist literature negotiates the relationship that the modern society constructs between the public and private dimensions of life, starting from two important sociocultural and economic phenomena: (1) the intensification of migration, and (2) the development of cultural tourism. In the first part of the article, I will provide an operational definition of the concept of modernity starting from Hartmut Rosa and Bruno Latour's work and discuss its intertwining with literary modernism. In the second part, I will delve into the way that the Romanian modernist characters, both male and female, migrate from one place to another in pursuit of employment opportunities and a better life. In the third part, I will explore the modern context of travelling the world, and the idea of youth culture from both historical and sociological perspectives. This section sets the stage for the final part of the article, in which I will focus on what I consider to be the first modern female cosmopolitan in Romanian literature and I will explore the aspects of modernity that the cosmopolitan novel sheds light on and constructs. The literary modernism discussed in this article spans from the late 19th century, exemplified by Vasile Alecsandri's novel Dridri1 (1871), to novels from the second and third decades of the 20th century, including Codin2 (1926), În lumea Mediteranei3 (1934) by Panait Istrati, and Femei4 (1934) by Mihail Sebastian. SOCIAL science research ,PUBLIC interest ,RESEARCH personnel ,SOCIOLOGY ,INSPIRATION - Abstract
In recent years, interest in the perspective of public sociology has grown in Italy, alongside a renewed focus on the relationship between sociology and the public sphere. Michael Burawoy's well-known proposal has become, from this point of view, a source of inspiration for a variety of approaches and practices. Following this trend, we propose to highlight the possible connections between public sociology and other approaches by working with some common distinctive elements. In this sense, we favor an extensive practice of the approach rather than a strict delimitation, aiming to embody an effort to think "with" and "through" public sociology. The essay begins by revisiting some aspects of the relationship between sociology and the "domain of the possible," which, according to Burawoy, is the foundation of the discipline. Subsequently, after clarifying the processual dimension of "public," we attempt to leverage the possible convergences between public sociology and other approaches. These approaches focus on the relationship between social research and critique, the capacity of social actors to contribute to the latter, and the conditions of transformative possibilities that social actors and researchers can cooperate to activate. Signs Preceding the End of the World by the Mexican writer Yuri Herrera examines the emergence of a liberal cosmopolitan subjectivity based on the revision of Nahuatl katabasis. In this journey through the necropolitics of territorial, cultural and identity borders, the importance of intercultural mediation is highlighted as a mechanism of ethical repair of rituals and memories and, therefore, following Kwame A. Cosmopolitan education is an ideal that transcends the boundaries of national historical and educational policy, but one that seems rather unrealistic in times of increasing national orientation of states. First, Aleida Assmann's rejection of cosmopolitanism in her attempt to rethink nation is critically examined. After a brief sketch of the struggles over memory and responsibility in Germany, the concept of a dialogical memory and the idea of a transnational culture of memory are discussed with regard to Germany and Japan. Finally, two concepts of cosmopolitical education are presented and the motivation for historical and self-critical education is reflected in a cosmopolitical perspective. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In her article, the author intends to embrace the phenomenon of Marie Bashkirtseff , whose literary legacy perfectly refl ects the epoch at the turn of the centuries. To achieve this goal, the author uses such methods as comparative, receptive and interpretive ones as well as cross reading. A special focus is on the Diary by Bashkirtseff which helps understand her creative personality, psychological priorities and artistic mission. The author studies her Ukrainian identity, estheticism, artistic behavior, feminism and disagreement with a traditional status of the woman that was so typical for her epoch. The author shows that estheticism and dandyism become her world view and life style. This can be traced in her female self-attraction, fascination with her own body, her clothes making or ordering it at Paris boutiques, love for accessories, artistic behavior and estheticism of her home. The author proves that Bashkirtseff ’s literary legacy can be seen as a true testimony to the arts of the turn of the centuries. Her Diary contemplates the atmosphere of the epoch, it resonates with real life, and it describes cultural reality simultaneously with social issues and everyday reality. It is fi lled with refl ections about art and literature that help discover cultural and historic truth. Also, the author presents an overview of Bojidar Karageorgevitch’s legacy. Born a Serbian prince, he was an intellectual cosmopolitan, writer, translator, journalist, artist, illustrator, designer, and jeweler. Bojidar was Bashkirtseff ’s close friend. He watched closely all discussions caused by the Diary. Karageorgevitch participated in denouncing invented stories about it. To give his friend more credibility, Karageorgevitch wrote several articles about Bashkirtseff , one of which was included into Encyclopedia Britannica. While researching the t life and multisided legacy of both artists, the author defi nes pronounced similarities between the two, including aristocratic decent, gifts and skills in the arts, education, cosmopolitanism, and bohemian lifestyles. It is proved that the legacy of Bashkirtseff and Karageorgevitch refl ects the tendencies of their time and can be used as a material to study the life of artists at the turn of the centuries and to deepen knowledge about European cultural context at the end of the 19th century.

- Abstract
Pennatulaceans (Octocorallia: Pennatulacea) are among the most dominant octocoral species living in soft bottom communities. Some of them are cosmopolitan and have been recorded in all seas and oceans of the world, from shallow waters up to about 6260 m deep. In the present study, we try to find answers to questions about the biogeographical distribution of sea pens including most recently described species. We also evaluate the diversity and faunistic affinities among pennatulaceans of the world’s oceans, and determine the degree of faunistic isolation of the Mediterranean Sea from the Atlantic. Finally, we return to the old debate about the hypothetical oldest diversification center of sea pen lineages. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Considering the implications of transnational mobility dynamics within the urban space, the city of Naples shows growing fluidity since territorial reconfigurations intersect with the influx and stabilization of foreign communities. However, forms of socioeconomic vulnerabilities also emerge, associated to filtering-down housing processes, residential differentiation, or even deprivation and spatial segregation. From this case, and in the frame of the cosmopolitism approach, it is possible to discuss, on the one hand, how these socio-spatial dynamics, deriving from global processes, reverberate on the urban fabric reshaping and reinterpreting its functions, traits and characteristics and, on the other hand, which kind of practices may contribute (or not) to a bottom-up social cohesion. This enquiry is the result of a micro-scale qualitative analysis of the urban practices of the Sri Lankans in the Cavone area and Stella neighborhoods, which present the highest incidence of the community within the city, highlighting the evolution of the group's strategies and interactions. - Abstract
The article considers pacifist and cosmopolitan intentions inscribed in the film Europe by Franciszka and Stefan Themersons, especially in the context of its source text by Anatol Stern. Rakoczy juxtaposes Stern’s poem with another cosmopolitan and pacifist text, namely the geopolitical manifesto Paneuropa written by Richard Coudenhove- Kalergi. Showing the broad spectrum of pacifist and cosmopolitan attitudes of the European interwar period – attitudes that are extremely important and necessary today – I consider: how they projected European identity? With what cultural and technological changes were they associated? What was understood by the concept of Europe, especially after the horrors of the Great War? I try to answer: what pitfalls and weaknesses were inscribed in these projects? Moreover, I wonder why these projects were disconnected from the experience of Central and Eastern Europe, the home region of all the considered artists, as well as from its invisible cosmopolitan practices. This article examines two texts by Mexican poet and essayist Gilberto Owen: “Poesía —¿pura?— plena. Ejemplo y sugestión” and “Poesía y Revolución (Introducción a un Baedeker de la poesía mexicana actual, [Escrito en 1931])”. I suggest that these texts are two nuclei in Owen’s literary and political thought, since they allow us to observe how the author is in the midst of cosmopolitanism and nationalism. In addition, this article approaches Mexican literary generation known as Contemporáneos, to which Owen belonged and of which he is both a representative and a sui generis case.

Many research instruments for measuring the degree of expression and components of national identity have been developed and tested, and one of the most commonly applied instruments in the context of former Yugoslav republics is the NAIT scale developed by Čorkalo and Kamenov. The aim of this study is to examine the degree of expression and structure of national identity among students by testing the multidimensional NAIT scale. This research is based on the assumptions of social identity theory developed by Tajfel and Turner, and starts from the existing psychological and sociological definitions of national identity and research on national identity. The students of the University of Kragujevac, the Faculty of Education, participated in the research (N=175). The research results indicate that the expression of national identity is higher with regard to the theoretical mean, and with regards to the results of some other research. The exploratory factor analysis singled out five components of students' national identity: 1) national affiliation; 2) national pride and sentiment; 3) relevance of the sense of national belonging; 4) nationalism; and 5) cosmopolitism. Based on the research results, we identified differences in the individual basic dimensions of students' national identity with regard to previous research.

The Mediterranean identity is becoming an intriguing tool for city authorities willing to implement policies of urban regeneration all over the basin. More specifically, all around the Mediterranean coast, independently on the national and local features, many cities are branding their identity as a “Mediterranean one” to promote gentrification projects, attract investments, develop tourism and re-shape their cultural identity for the global scene. In our paper, we are going to investigate the main common characters of this Mediterranean branding process by comparing three cases of very different Mediterranean cities: Napoli, Marseille and Rijeka. These cities are peripherally located within their national territories and although part of quite diverse nation-building process, they are all targets of regeneration policies that exploit their maritime immaterial and material heritage, usually emphasized by “big events” (such as ECOC in Marseille 2013 and Rijeka 2020, or the America’s cup in Napoli). Thus, our aim is twofold: on one hand we shall point out the common ideological features of this regeneration-oriented Mediterranean narrative by focusing on and deconstructing the driving concept of local cosmopolitanism. On the other one, we will explore the practices of exclusion hidden behind this Mediterranean narrative by stressing the unspoken discard and removal of some undesired people, histories and heritage from the picture of regeneration. Our investigation is based on the quantitative and qualitative analysis of tourist masterplans, city sponsored cultural promotion materials and audio-visual advertisements of the city. Also, visual ethnography of the urban beaches, port-areas and waterfronts aimed at detecting and quantifying landmarks, signs and symbols of the Mediterranean-ess.

- Abstract
Can writers work in an Art Nouveau house? The coherence and unity of style of these interiors designed down to the smallest detail by all-powerful architects seem to dispossess the writer/artist of his interior, and perhaps of his interiority. This article aims to study some fictional texts which, around 1900, show aesthetes and authors in Art Nouveau interiors -- often evoked under the malefic and grimacing figure of the "modern style" -- which prevent creation but also arouse satirical texts against and thanks to these fashionable walls. This paper aims to describe the relationship between diplomacy and identity. Can we still talk about soft power in the terms of Joseph Nye? Does Europe use soft power? And if so, does it use it regarding the term of ‘collective identity’? Starting from the article of Anthony D. Smith, National identity and the idea of European unity, can we talk about collective cultural identity? Europe is a continent that knows and accepts lots of different cultures but does it aim, in terms of definition, to have a single „European culture”? There are lots of questions raised by this article. If the members of UE are searching to have a collective identity, how are the member states reacting to this idea? Eventually, every single country is not going to give up the national culture and what is defining each other. There is a common destiny that combines continuity and memory. We can find this at every social level and also regarding the national diplomacy. Attracting the UE members into having a European culture, and doing this in terms of soft power, can this really work for the UE? The European identity, as well as the national identity, it is not a natural one but a social one. It is a social construct seen as the result of historical conditions and cultural relations.

ETHNOCENTRISM , *INDIVIDUAL differences , *COSMOPOLITANISM , *CULTURAL identity , *LITERACY - Abstract
This study sought to investigate how cosmopolitanism and ethnocentrism can explain individual differences in global literacy. The study sample consisted of 730 participants (353 men and 377 women) ranging in age from 20 to 59 years (M = 40.16, SD = 10.78). After controlling for demographic variables, hierarchical regression analysis revealed that most subscales of cosmopolitanism, as well as a subscale of ethnocentrism were positively associated with global literacy. These findings challenge the view that a cosmopolitan orientation is superior, while an ethnocentric orientation is not conducive to fostering a global perspective. This study highlights the importance of valuing, maintaining, and identifying with one's own culture and values to obtain a global perspective. Our findings provide suggestions for fostering the development of personal characteristics that promote global literacy. Specifically, rather than focusing on resisting ethnocentrism, promoting global literacy can be achieved by advocating cosmopolitanism and encouraging the simultaneous existence of multiple cultural identifications at the local, national, and global levels. • Cosmopolitanism was positively associated with global literacy. • Ethnocentrism was also positively associated with global literacy. • Cosmopolitanism and ethnocentrism are not mutually exclusive. • Both cosmopolitan and ethnocentric personal dispositions may cultivate global literacy. • The coexistence of cultural identifications at the local and global levels is crucial. ROMANIAN literature , *EMPLOYEE rights , *SOCIAL classes , *REALIST fiction , *EVERYDAY life , *CLASS differences - Abstract
The present study dwells on an archive that includes around 85% of the Romanian production of novel from 1845 to 1947 and analyzes the social aspects of daily life in the fictional worlds of realist novels published in this timespan. From work conditions to the rights of employees, from hunger to bountifulness, from modesty to display, two different hemispheres seem to co-exist: a rustical and narrow one of the rural, liminal spaces, and a cosmopolitan and broad one of cities and mobility. Without a doubt, besides this spatial influence over daily life, an even more important one, that sometimes is complementary to the first and sometimes it overarches it is social class. In the mirrored image of the realist Romanian novel until 1947, there is nothing more consequential for individual and collective characters than class, and the differences between classes are closely linked to all dimensions of daily life described in our article. Abstract Given their dormancy capability (long-term resistant stages) and their ability to colonise and reproduce, microscopic aquatic animals have been suggested having cosmopolitan distribution. Their dormant stages may be continuously moved by mobile elements through the entire planet to any suitable habitat, preventing the formation of biogeographical patterns. In this review, I will go through the evidence we have on the most common microscopic aquatic animals, namely nematodes, rotifers, and tardigrades, for each of the assumptions allowing long-distance dispersal (dormancy, viability, and reproduction) and all the evidence we have for transportation, directly from surveys of dispersing stages, and indirectly from the outcome of successful dispersal in biogeographical and phylogeographical studies. The current knowledge reveals biogeographical patterns also for microscopic organisms, with species-specific differences in ecological features that make some taxa indeed cosmopolitan with the potential for long-distance dispersal, but others with restricted geographic distributions.

Marcel Pagnol seems a paradoxal choice to question the links between literature and cosmopolitism: on the contrary, this author appears to have an inward-looking outlook, adopting a national, even regional perspective. In truth, the local picture of Provence involves the definition of the Mediterranean area, which is the ultimate example of a crossroads for exchange. Therefore, Pagnol’s description of Southern France is twofold: he takes up the Latin and Hellenic imaginative worlds in a neoclassical approach without denying Arabic and Semitic influences. Blending cosmopolitism and attachment to his homeland, the writer could be described as an « open nationalist ».

43. Des études internationales cosmopolites en Asie

When Asian thinkers (from the Middle East and from the Far East) study international relations, they depart from European scholars: they are more normative and less rationalist, they prefer substance to form; they believe in loyalty among allies, hence discarding the defection dilemma, which is so popular among Westerners. In their view, the European scholars’ assumption of an impossibility to suppress interstate borders (“Hobbes’ constant”) cannot be held. Conversely, the planned de-sectorialization of the mandate assigned to multilateral organizations (“Bull’s conjecture”) could be more attractive to them. However, they do not believe in its limitations – according to Bull, cooperation would remain formal and procedural. Neither do they foresee an international society in which regional systems would eventually merge, as forecasted by members of the English School. In short, they are less focused on territorialized sovereignty than on a diffuse imperium leading to universal harmony. And this weakens the very foundations of a world order since Europe emerged as a dominant region among others: borders, sovereignty, and war.

The article reviews the life and work of Stefan Zweig, playwright, journalist, biographer, historian and poet, born in Vienna on November 28, 1881, who committed suicide on February 22, 1942 in Petropolis, Brazil. Raised in Vienna, a cosmopolitan metropolis, in a Jewish family, as cosmopolitan as the city, assimilated into the culture of the Habsburg Empire – «a great and mighty empire» and «a world of security», Zweig experienced the collapse of what he calls «yesterday’s world», the European society, preceding World War that was perhaps more globalized than it is today. Perhaps nothing gives a better idea of the abyss the world has fallen into since World War I, writes Zweig, than the limitation on freedom of movement. Before 1914, everyone went where they wanted and stayed there as long as they wanted. «The world of security and creative reason in which we were born, where we grew up and where we felt like our own” was shattered “into a thousand pieces like an empty clay pot» by the World War one, then by the crises of the Twenties and Thirties, then by totalitarianisms. Escaping Nazism, Zweig becomes an exiled, taking refuge first in England, then in Latin America, in Brazil. There he discovers the world of the future, in this mixed Brazil which seems to ignore the tension and violence around the question of race that is destroying Europe. The Brazil that Zweig describes in his latest work, Brazil, Land von Zukunft, may be idealised. However, the enhancement of hybridisation was so foreign to the European thought at the time that one can only be grateful to Zweig for carrying the theme. The fascination with “the land of the future” couldn’t, however, console Zweig for the end of yesterday’s world. The writer could not survive Europe’s “suicide”.

EMIGRATION & immigration ,IMMIGRANTS ,RUSSIAN historiography ,REFUGEES ,TRANSMIGRATION - Abstract
Transmigration has been one of the most intensely studied and promising themes in contemporary migration research. In Russian historiography, transnationalism and transmigratory processes, with a certain delay, became the focus of research attention in the 2000s, and we are currently seeing a rise in publications on these phenomena. The mentioned delay can be accounted for by some objective historical processes which were taking place in the post-Soviet space, including intensification of migration flows and change in their quantitative and qualitative characteristics. The 1990s migration from post-Soviet countries, which consisted in constant movement (the Russians' mass return to their historical homeland; refugees trying to escape from ethnic conflicts and oppression, etc.), has now turned into temporary (transit and circular) labour and educational migration from "near-abroad" countries and beyond. According to the new UN DESA report, today, the Russian Federation (RF) ranks second in the world in terms of the number of migrants (12 million people) after the USA. Thus, integrating migrants already living in the country and regulating new arrivals is a pressing issue for Russia. The hypothesis behind the research presented here is based on distinguishing features of current migration processes in Russia. We hypothesise that Russian scholars choose different lines of research and theoretical approaches in transmigration research, compared to their international counterparts, due to the country's geopolitical position and the nature of transmigratory flows it experiences. Due to the article's limited volume, we cannot give a complete overview of Russian publications on transmigration issues here. Instead, we offer an analysis of transmigration scholarship in Russia, its methodological premises, and major trends in its development. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

49. Cosmopolitism and Revolution: Hervás y Panduro’s Dreams

- Abstract
This paper invites us to consider the political dimension of Lorenzo Hervás y Panduro’s work as piece of criticism that, from the universalism of Christian philosophy, rethinks the modern reworking of ancient cosmopolitical ideals (of Cynical and Stoic roots). The reader will first discover, thus, the literary, political and scientific debates that explain the careful order used to place the Viaggio estatico within his Idea dell’Universo. Then, it goes on by underlining the distinctive feature of the Viaggio within his Idea, the use of a dialogue where the disciple is called Cosmopolite, that can be used to show how Hervás replies to the ideologization of the term by the Cosmopolite (1751) written by Fougeret de Monbron.

- Abstract
I analyze two texts by Ernest Gellner in which he interprets a figure of Mali-nowski, his life and the functionalist theory. In the first article, “Zeno of Cracow or Revolution at Nemi or the Polish Revenge. A Drama in Three Acts”, Gellner compares Malinowski and his functionalist theory to Zeno from Elea and his philosophy of being as an Immovable One. In the second text, Language and Solitude. Wittgenstein, Malinowski and the Habsburg DilemmaI, he approaches Malinowski taking as a frame of reference the discrepancies between him and Ludwig Wittgenstein. Each one of them results the inverted image of the other. Although they both were inhabitants of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, they reflected the contradictions of their time, especially the opposition of the cosmopolitan and the nationalist visions of the man and the world.
