Introduction: Beef cattle in the Northern Great Plains of the United States of America are normally kept in open dry lot pens in winter. Practices such as bale grazing, swath grazing, stockpiling, and corn residue grazing, can be used to extend the grazing season and minimize dry lot use. Extending the grazing season has several advantages over dry lot use but arguably the most important benefit is cost savings due to lower labor and input costs. Strategies selected to supplement cattle in extended grazing systems should maintain cost savings while providing required nutrients to cattle. This study was conducted to evaluate supplementing strategies for beef cattle in a bale grazing system using grass hay during variable winter conditions. The study was conducted across variable winter conditions that are encountered in winters in the US Northern Great Plains. Methods: The study extended over four years. Each year, non-lactating pregnant beef cows (n = 64, year 1; n = 80, year 2, 3, 4) were divided into eight groups of similar average body weight and randomly assigned to one of four bale grazing treatments as follows: a) bale grazing grass hay, b) bale grazing grass hay treated with a liquid supplement, c) bale grazing grass hay and alfalfa hay, and d) bale grazing grass hay and plus 1.8 kg corn DDGS/head/day. Animal performance was assessed from two-day body weights and body condition scores taken at the start and end of the study. Data analysis considered the fixed effects of treatment, year, and treatment x year interaction. Results: Final BW tended (P = 0.09) to be greatest following corn DDGS supplementation and lowest when grass hay was offered. The treatment strategy x year interaction (P = 0.026) for ADG showed that corn DDGS supplementation resulted in positive ADG across the years regardless of environmental conditions. Liquid or alfalfa hay supplementation resulted in positive ADG when environmental conditions were favorable. Final BCS (P = 0.005) and BCS change (P = 0.004) were greater following corn DDGS supplementation, intermediate following alfalfa hay or liquid supplementation and lowest when grass hay was fed. Supplementation costs ranged from $1.33 to $1.90/head/day, the highest cost occurred with corn DDGS supplementation mainly due to cost of corn DDGS and labor required to deliver corn DDGS to cattle on pasture. Discussion: Alfalfa hay or molasses-based liquids increased diet CP content but did not supply adequate energy in severely cold winters. Despite relatively higher supplement costs, high energy supplements such as corn DDGS may be required in severely cold winters where cattle require extra energy. Supplement selection should consider supplement effectiveness to meet animal nutrient requirements particularly in adverse winter conditions such as those encountered in the US Northern Great Plains. In the production of the ethanol from cereal grains, besides the main product which is ethanol, there are olso very valuable by-product that can be used as animal feed. The dried distilled grains with solubles (DDGS) is quite rich in protein and other nutrients. With the ever-increasing cost of soybeans and corn, many scientists are studying the possibilities of using DDGS in poultry nutrition. The aim of the present study was to determine the effect of including corn DDGS and corn DDGS and probiotic in compound feeds on productive, slaughter performance and some meat physicochemical parameters of broiler chickens under floor-rearing conditions. The experiment included 3 treatments (T), namely T1: the control group received a balanced compound feed, according to the requirements of the hybrid, without the participation of corn DDGS, T2: the diett contained 15% corn DDGS and T3: the dietts contained 15% corn DDGS and supplemented 500g probiotic/ton of feed. Each experiment had 20 one-day-old sexed male Ross-308 broiler chickens, replicated 3 times, and ended when the chickens were 35 days old. The results shown that diets T2 and T3 did not positively affect the weight development of chicks compared to T1 (the control group). At 35 days old, chicken weight from the control group outperformed the two experimental groups: by 8.45% in the T3 (corn DDGS and probiotic) and by 11.76% in the T2 (corn DDGS) at P<0.05. Differences in feed consumption per 1 kg of growth over the 35-day fattening period between the control and experimental groups were small and statistically unproven. Feeding diets with 15% DDGS from corn significantly reduced carcass weight, grill, thight and wing weight in broiler chickens. There were no significant differences in slaughter yield between the study groups. Diets T2 and T3 improved the water holding capacity (WHC %) of breast meat in broilers (at P< 0.001). The lowest loss in thermal processing (cooking) was observed in breast and thigh meat of chickens fed the diets with 15% corn DDGS and probiotic (P<0.05). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

BACKGROUND: We investigated the impact of using canola meal (CM) or corn distillers dried grain soluble (cDDGS) in place of soybean meal (SBM) in low‐crude‐protein diets supplemented with amino acids (AA) on AA digestibility, gut morphometrics, and AA transporter genes in broiler chicken. On day 0, 540 Cobb 500 male broilers were allocated to six diets in 36‐floor pens. The positive control (PC) was a corn‐SBM diet with adequate crude protein (CP). The CP level of negative control (NC) was decreased by 45 and 40 g kg−1 relative to PC for grower and finisher phases, respectively. The subsequent two diets had the same CP levels as NC but with cDDGS added at 50 or 125 g kg−1. The last two diets had the same CP as NC but with CM added at 50 or 100 g kg−1. RESULTS: Dietary CP reduction in corn‐SBM diets increased (P < 0.05) the digestibility of Lys (88.5%), Met (90.7%), Thr (77.4%), Cys (80.7%), and Gly (84.7%). Increasing levels of cDDGS linearly decreased (P < 0.05) the digestibility of Asp, Cys, Glu, and Ser, whereas increasing CM level linearly decreased (P < 0.05) the digestibility of Cys, Pro, and Ser. The CP reduction in corn‐SBM diets produced downward expression of peptide transporter1 and decreased (P < 0.05) absolute pancreas and ileum weight and length of jejunum and ileum. CONCLUSIONS: Partial replacement of SBM with alternative protein feedstuffs (cDDGS or CM) in low‐CP diets had minimal effects on AA digestibility and mRNA levels of peptides and AA transporters. © 2024 The Authors. Plant-based bioenergy by-products such as corn distillers’ dried grains with solubles (DDGS) are widely utilized as animal feed sources and feed ingredients due to their balanced nutritional profile and animal health protective functional qualities. Bioprocessing of this bioenergy by-product using beneficial lactic acid bacteria (LAB)-based fermentation strategy to improve animal-health targeted functional qualities has wider relevance for animal feed applications. In this study, liquid extracts of corn DDGS were fermented with Lactiplantibacillus plantarum and Lactobacillus helveticus. The unfermented and fermented extracts were then analyzed (at 0, 24, 48 and 72-h) for their total soluble phenolic content (TSP), phenolic profile, antioxidant activity via ABTS and DPPH radical scavenging activity, and antimicrobial activity against the gut pathogen Helicobacter pylori using in vitro assay models. Statistical differences in antioxidant activity and phenolic content were observed among the unfermented and fermented extracts. The major phenolic compounds detected in corn DDGS were gallic, dihydroxybenzoic, p-coumaric, caffeic and ferulic acid, and catechin. Antimicrobial activity against H. pylori was observed for the unfermented extracts and the antimicrobial activity was attributed to the growth of a corn DDGS-endemic culture. The culture was isolated, sequenced, and identified as Bacillus amyloliquefaciens. Results of this study indicated that processing strategies of by-products such as LAB- based fermentation of corn DDGS could affect its bioactive-linked functional qualities due to microbial interaction with the phytochemicals. Furthermore, plant by-products can serve as novel sources of beneficial microflora that have relevance in wider agriculture, food safety, and therapeutic applications.

Simple Summary: Dietary protein reduction with amino acid supplementation is a nutritional approach to reducing environmental pollution. Soybean meal is nutritionally superior to alternative protein feedstuffs, such as corn distillers dried grain with solubles (cDDGS) and canola meal (CM), because of its relatively good balance of amino acids. This study investigated the usage of CM or cDDGS compared to SBM in low-protein broiler diets and their effects on growth performance, carcass yield, whole-body composition, and litter characteristics. The results demonstrated that replacing soybean meal with cDDGS or CM negatively affected the performance of the birds, whereas reducing dietary protein reduced the litter surface ammonia, irrespective of protein feedstuff. Therefore, complete replacement of SBM with cDDGS or CM in low-protein diets is not feasible for optimum performance in broiler chickens. Thereafter, six experimental diets were provided in grower and finisher phases. The diets included a positive control (PC): a corn–SBM diet with adequate protein. The protein level of the negative control (NC) was decreased by 45 g/kg relative to the PC. The next two diets had the same protein levels as the NC but with cDDGS added at 50 or 125 g/kg. The last two diets had the same CP as the NC but with CM added at 50 or 100 g/kg. All the low-protein diets had the same level of standardized ileal digestible indispensable AA according to Cobb 500 recommended level. Gly and Ser were added as sources of non-specific N. The dietary protein reduction in corn–SBM diets at both phases decreased (p < 0.05) weight gain and increased (p < 0.05) feed conversion ratio (FCR). Increasing levels of cDDGS or CM, at a constant CP level, linearly decreased (p < 0.05) the weight gain and feed intake, whereas increasing CM level linearly increased (p < 0.05) FCR in the grower and finisher phases. The eviscerated and carcass yields decreased, whereas the fat yield increased (p < 0.05) with reduced protein in corn–SBM diet. Increasing levels of cDDGS and CM at a constant CP level quadratically decreased (p < 0.05) the eviscerated weight, whereas the fat weight linearly decreased (p < 0.05) with increasing levels of cDDGS and CM. The birds receiving the PC diet had a lower (p < 0.05) lean muscle (%) and a higher fat (%) compared to birds receiving the NC diet at d 21. However, on d42, birds receiving the PC diet had decreased (p < 0.05) bone mineral density, bone mineral content and lean weight compared to those receiving the NC diet. The litter ammonia increased (p < 0.05) with the increasing levels of protein in the SBM diets. In conclusion, 50 g/kg inclusion levels of CM and cDDGS at the same low-protein levels as SBM produced a similar growth response to the NC, whereas higher levels were detrimental. BACKGROUND Distiller's dried grains with solubles (DDGS) are coproducts of the biofuel industries that use corn as raw material. This cereal is commonly contaminated by mycotoxins, including fumonisins (FBs), which can pose a serious health threat to humans and animals. Corn DDGS are typically used as a protein‐rich animal feed. As mycotoxins from the original cereal grains become concentrated in DDGS, mycotoxicological monitoring is highly required before their use as ingredient in the industry. RESULTS: This work aimed to develop a methodology for predicting fumonisins B1 (FB1) and B2 (FB2) in corn DDGS using near‐infrared reflectance spectroscopy (NIRS) technology associated with chemometric methods. One hundred and ninety corn DDGS samples originating from Brazilian ethanol plants and feed mills were included in this assessment. Two datasets were created: one for calibration (132 samples) and another for external validation (58 samples). Partial least squares regression and a cross‐validation approach were applied to build the models. Liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry was used as the reference methodology. Calibration results of correlation coefficient and residual prediction deviation for FB1 and FB2 were, respectively, 0.90 and 0.88; and 2.16 and 2.06. CONCLUSION: Values of the external validation dataset were compared and no statistical difference was found between groups, indicating a satisfactory predictive ability and confirming the potential of NIRS to predict fumonisins in corn DDGS. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry. The objective of this study was to determine the total tract digestibility coefficients of growing pigs fed diets with different inclusion levels of corn dried distillers grains with solubles (DDGS) produced in Bulgaria. Four castrated male pigs from the Danube White breed with an average body weight of 16 ± 0.3 kg, housed in individual metabolic cages, were used in the digestibility experiment. Four different diets were examined: 1) a basal diet (100 corn), consisting mainly of corn, (96.25% corn and 3.75% vitamins and minerals); 2) 60/40 DDGS diet, in which DDGS was included at 40%; 3) 40/60 DDGS diet, in which DDGS was included at 60%, and 4) DDGS based diet (100 DDGS), consisting mainly of corn DDGS (97.5% DDGS and 2.5% vitamins and minerals). The apparent total tract digestibility coefficients of dry matter (DM), crude protein (CP), ether extracts (EE), crude fibers (CF), and nitrogen free extract (NFE) were determined. Increasing the inclusion level of DDGS in the rations of growing pigs significantly reduced the digestibility coefficients of the main nutrients - CP, EE, and NFE, but did not affect the digestibility of CF. A study was conducted to determine effects of supplementing multi-enzyme on apparent ileal digestibility (AID) of energy and AA; and apparent total tract digestibility (ATTD) of energy for pigs fed low-energy and AA diets. Eight ileal-cannulated barrows (initial BW: 38.7 ± 2.75 kg) were fed four diets in a replicated 4 × 4 Latin square design to give 8 replicates per diet. Diets were positive control (PC) diet, negative control (NC) diet without or with multi-enzyme at 0.5 or 1.0 g/kg. The PC diet was formulated to meet or exceed NRC (2012) nutrient recommendations for grower pigs (25 to 50 kg), except for Ca and digestible P, which were lower than NRC (2012) recommendations by 0.13 and 0.17 percentage points, respectively, due to phytase supplementation at 1,000 FTU/kg. The NC diet was formulated to be lower in NE by 75 kcal/kg and standardized ileal digestible AA content by a mean of 3%. These reductions were achieved by partial replacement of corn and soybean meal (SBM) and complete replacement of soybean oil and monocalcium phosphate in PC diet with 25% corn distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS) and 3.6% soybean hulls. Multi-enzyme at 1.0 g/kg supplied 1,900 U of xylanase, 300 U of β-glucanase, 1,300 U of cellulase, 11,500 U of amylase, 120 U of mannanase, 850 U of pectinase, 6,000 U of protease, and 700 U of invertase per kilogram of diet. The AID of GE, N, most AA, most component sugars of nonstarch polysaccharides (NSP) and P; ATTD of GE for PC diet was greater (P < 0.05) than those for NC diets. An increase in dietary level of multi-enzyme from 0 to 1.0 g/kg resulted in a linear increase (P < 0.05) in AID of Ile by 4.3%, and tended to linearly increase (P < 0.10) AID of Leu, Met, Phe, and Val by a mean of 3.4%. Increasing dietary multi-enzyme from 0 to 1.0 g/kg linearly increased (P < 0.05) AID of total NSP and P by 53.7% and 19.2%, respectively; ATTD of GE by 8.4% and DE and NE values by 8.8% and 8.2%, respectively; tended to linearly increase (P < 0.10) AID of GE by 8.1%. The NE values for NC diet with multi-enzyme at 1.0 g/kg tended to be greater (P < 0.10) than that for PC diet (2,337 vs. 2,222 kcal/kg of DM). In conclusion, multi-enzyme supplementation improved energy and nutrient digestibilities of a corn–SBM–corn DDGS-based diet, implying that the multi-enzyme fed in the current study can be used to enhance energy and nutrient utilization of low-energy AA diets for grower pigs. Corn distiller's dried grains with solubles (cDDGS) as a major co-product from dry-grind corn-ethanol processes have imbalanced key amino acids (AA), high indigestible fiber and phytate, and risk of mycotoxin contamination, which limit its inclusion rate in monogastric animal diets. This study used cellulolytic fungus Trichoderma reesei (TR), two zygomycete fungi Mucor indicus (MI) and Rizopus oryzae (RO) and their co-cultures to ferment corn wet distiller's grains with solubles (WDGS) with the supply of soybean hulls and urea via solid-state fermentation at 28 °C for up to 9 days. Compared to control (non-inoculation) and monoculture, TR and RO co-culture (TR+RO) after 6 and 9 days showed more balanced branch-chain AA (BCAA) of valine (Val), leucine (Leu), and isoleucine (Ile), higher phytate reduction (56–61%), lower concentration of deoxynivalenol (DON), zearalenone (ZEN) and total aflatoxins (AFT). However, the treatments with MI (MI, RO+MI, TR+MI) showed increase of DON while reduction of ZEN compared to treatment without MI. Due to fast growth of RO and MI, the co-culture of TR+MI and TR+RO after 3 days of fermentation improved total AA by 32 % and 28 %, respectively, higher than monoculture of TR (18 % after 3 days). Compared with co-culture, monoculture of TR produced feed with higher in vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD) with 22–43 % improvement from control, and higher in vitro digestibility of total AA (IVDAA) with 35–50 % improvement from control, the similar level was also achieved by co-culture of TR+RO after 6 days of fermentation. Therefore, co-culture of TR+RO and monoculture of TR in fungal bioprocessing could provide a feasible solution to improve the overall feeding value of the cDDGS. • Mucor indicus and its co-culture produced deoxynivalenol but reduced zearalenone. • Trichoderma reesei monoculture improved total amino acids digestibility by 50 %. • High accumulation of amino acids in M. indicus did not guarantee high digestibility. • T. reesei and Rhizopus oryzae co-culture produced low risk, highly digestible feed. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of replacing cereals and protein concentrates in a high-cereal concentrate (control) for light lambs with corn distiller’s dried grains with solubles (DDGS; 18%), dried citrus pulp (DCP; 18%), and exhausted olive cake (EOC; 8%) in a byproduct (BYP) concentrate on growth performance, digestibility, ruminal fermentation, and plasma metabolites. Two homogeneous groups of Lacaune lambs (13.8 kg ± 0.25 kg) were fed one of each concentrates and barley straw ad libitum until reaching about 26 kg body weight. There were no differences between groups on feed intake, average daily gain, or feed conversion ratio, but the control diet had greater (p < 0.001) dry matter digestibility. Diet had no effect on post-mortem ruminal pH and total volatile fatty acid concentrations and profile, but NH3-N concentrations were lower (p = 0.003) for the BYP-fed group compared with the control one. However, plasma concentrations of amino acids, total proteins, urea, and hepatic enzymes were not affected by the diet. In conclusion, 44% of feed ingredients in the concentrate for light lambs can be replaced with a mixture of corn DDGS, DCP, and EOC without negatively affecting growing performance and animal health.

The specific objectives of this experiment were to investigate the effects of adding 10% or 30% corn dried distillers grains with solubles (DDGS) to the dairy cow diet and the effects of bedding type (wood shavings, straw or peat moss) in dairy slurry on fugitive CH4 emissions. The addition of DDGS10 to the dairy cow diet significantly increased (29%) the daily amount of fat excreted in slurry compared to the control diet. The inclusion of DDGS30 in the diet increased the daily amounts of excreted DM, volatile solids (VS), fat, neutral detergent fiber (NDF), acid detergent fiber (ADF) and hemicellulose by 18%, 18%, 70%, 30%, 15% and 53%, respectively, compared to the control diet. During the storage experiment, daily fugitive CH4 emissions showed a significant increase of 15% (p < 0.05) for the slurry resulting from the corn DDGS30 diet. The addition of wood shavings and straw did not have a significant effect on daily fugitive CH4 emissions relative to the control diet, whereas the addition of peat moss caused a significant increase of 27% (p < 0.05) in fugitive CH4 emissions.

The use of corn distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS) in pig diets is limited due to high fiber concentration. Steeping with exogenous fiber-degrading enzymes (FDE) may improve their feeding value. We evaluated apparent ileal digestibility (AID), standardized ileal digestibility (SID), and apparent total tract digestibility (ATTD) of components and DE content in DDGS steeped without or with two commercial FDE (A and B). Mixture of 350 g of DDGS, FDE (none for control), and 1.5 liters of water was incubated at 40 °C for 24 h with 15 min agitation every 40 min. FDE-A (pure combination) supplied 5,500 U of xylanase and 1,050 U of β-glucanase while FDE-B (multienzyme complex) supplied 1,200 U of xylanase, 150 U of β-glucanase, 500 U of cellulase, and 5,000 U of protease per kg of DDGS plus side activities. Samples were taken at time 0, 4, 8, and 24 h for organic acids and pH measurements. Three semi-purified corn starch–based diets were formulated with steeped DDGS as the sole source of CP. The basal mixture contained 0.2% TiO2 as indigestible marker. Six ileal-cannulated pigs (20 kg BW) were fed the three diets in a replicated 3 × 3 Latin square design to give six replicates per diet. Pigs were fed at 2.8× maintenance energy requirements and had free access to water. In each period, pigs were adjusted to diets for 7 d followed by 2 d for grab fecal and 2 d of 8 h continuous ileal digesta collection. There were no (P > 0.05) treatment and sampling time interaction or treatment effects on pH and lactic concentration. Lactic and acetic acids increased, and pH decreased (P < 0.05) over time points. The AID of CP, NDF, and crude fat and SID of CP were not different (P > 0.05) among treatments. Steeping DDGS with FDE-A had lower (P = 0.01) ATTD of NDF than control but higher (P = 0.001) ATTD of crude fat compared with the control or DDGS steeped with FDE-B. Values for DE content in steeped DDGS were not different (P > 0.05) and amounted to 4,095, 4,039, and 3,974 kcal/kg DM for the control, FDE-A, and FDE-B, respectively. The study investigated the effects of increasing content of corn distillers' dried grains with solubles (DDGS) in the diets of laying ducks on oxidative status, laying performance, egg quality, and egg yolk fatty acid composition. Longyan females (1080) with similar BW at 17 wk of age were randomly assigned to 6 treatment groups, each consisting of 6 replicates of 30 birds. The basal diet (I) was a typical corn-soybean ration while the experimental diets (II to VI) substituted corn DDGS for soybean meal and wheat bran and a small reduction of corn. The level of substitution in diets (II to VI) was 6%, 12%, 18%, 24% and 30%. The experiment lasted for 18 wk. Average egg weight decreased linearly as the level of corn DDGS inclusion increased (P < 0.001). Haugh unit, albumen weight, and proportion declined as linear responses to corn DDGS substitution (P < 0.05), but yolk color linearly increased (P < 0.001); the proportions of oleic (C18:1) and total monounsaturated fatty acids in egg yolk linearly decreased with increasing corn DDGS and many of the key polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) like linoleic (C18:2n-6), arachidonic (C20:4n-6) and a-linolenic (C18:3n-3) acids linearly increased (P < 0.001), but not those of eicosapentaenoic (C20:5n-3) and docoshexaenoic (C22:6n-3) acids. The PUFAs n-6/n-3 ratio linearly increased with increasing corn DDGS level (P < 0.001). Increasing corn DDGS linearly increased hepatic expression of GPX1, HO-1, and Nrf2 and hepatic activity of GSH-Px and the liver content of MDA (P < 0.001). There were no treatment effects on egg production, egg mass, feed conversion ratio, eggshell thickness, strength, and yolk cholesterol content (P > 0.05). In conclusion, the current study indicates that the use of corn DDGS is possible as a replacement, primarily for soybean meal at levels up to 18% in the diets of laying ducks without affecting laying performance, egg quality, and antioxidant status. The main objective of this study was to obtain scientifically sound data on the bioenergy potential of dairy manures from cows fed different levels of corn dried distillers grains with solubles (DDGS). Three diets differing in corn DDGS content were formulated: 0% corn DDGS (DDGS0; control diet), 10% corn DDGS (DDGS10) and 30% corn DDGS (DDGS30). Bioenergy production was determined in psychrophilic (25 ± 1 °C) sequencing batch reactors (SBRs) fed 3 g COD L−1·day−1 during a two-week feeding period followed by a two-week react period. Compared to the control diet, adding DDGS10 and DDGS30 to the dairy cow diet increased the daily amount of fat excreted in slurry by 29% and 70%, respectively. The addition of DDGS30 increased the cows’ daily production of fresh feces and slurry by 15% and 11%, respectively. Furthermore, the incorporation of DDGS30 in the diet increased the daily amounts of dry matter (DM), volatile solids (VS), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), acid detergent fiber (ADF) and hemicellulose by 18%, 18%, 30%, 15% and 53%, respectively, compared to the control diet. While the addition of DDGS did not significantly affect the specific CH4 production per kg VS compared to the control diet, DDGS30 increased the per cow daily CH4 production by 14% compared to the control diet.

This experiment used indirect calorimetry to determine the net energy ( NE) content of five corn distillers dried grains with solubles (corn DDGS) containing different oil levels and to compare the NE obtained using indirect calorimetry with that calculated using previously published prediction equations. There were two samples of high-oil DDGS, one sample of medium-oil DDGS and two samples of low-oil DDGS. Twelve barrows (initial BW of 32.8 ± 2.0 kg) were used in a repeated 3 × 6 Youden square design with three periods and six diets. The diets were comprised of a corn-soybean meal basal diet and five diets containing 29.25% of one of the corn DDGS added at the expense of corn and soybean meal. During each period, the pigs were individually housed in metabolism crates for 16 days which included 7 days for adaption to feed and environmental conditions. On day 8, the pigs were transferred to respiration chambers and fed one of the six diets at 2300 kJ ME/kg BW0.6/day. Faeces and urine were collected from day 9 to 13 and heat production (HP) was also measured. From day 14 to 15, the pigs were fed 893 kJ ME/kg BW0.6/day to allow them to adapt from the fed to the fasted state. On the last day of each period (day 16), the pigs were fasted and fasting HP was measured. The digestible energy value was 16.0, 17.1 and 15.3 MJ/kg DM, the metabolizable energy value was 14.6, 15.5 and 13.7 MJ/kg DM and the NE value was 10.7, 11.0 and 9.4 MJ/kg DM, for the high-oil, medium-oil and low-oil corn DDGS, respectively. In recent years, corn has been widely used to produce ethanol. Roughly for every 25.4 kg of corn processed, 8.16 kg of Dried Distillers Grains with Solubles (DDGS) and 11 l of ethanol are produced. The amount of DDGS produced is steadily increasing since 1990 with 35 million metric tonnes produced in 2012. DDGS has been investigated for its use as a functional filler in low density wood particleboards bonded with 10 wt.% (wt.%) Melamine Urea Formaldehyde and 10 wt.% AW-50 paraffin wax emulsion for water resistance. Both the concentration of the DDGS filler – 5, 10, and 15 wt.% – and the particle size of the filler – 125, 300, and 500 μm – has been considered in this experiment. It was presumed that the additional protein and fats in the lignocellulosic DDGS would increase the mechanical strength and the water resistance of the particleboards. Chemical analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, transform infrared spectroscopy, and 13C NMR were used to analyze the DDGS filler. The analysis showed that the chemical composition of DDGS was not altered by micronization. A variety of mechanical tests were performed following ASTM D1037 including flexural, internal bond, screw withdrawal, and water absorption. The results show that at concentrations of 5 wt.% DDGS with particles of 500 μm produced superior properties compared to the control panel from the water absorption, flexural, and internal bond tests. This study investigated different fatty acid profiles in dietary fat sources for pigs fed with corn DDGS (CDDGS) and determined their effect on adipose tissue quality and the expression of metabolism-related genes in the liver. The experiment was carried out on 32 fatteners (60–118 kg of body weight) divided into four groups. Group I (control): feed mixture with rapeseed oil; Group II: feed mixture with rapeseed oil and CDDGS; Group III: feed mixture with beef tallow and CDDGS; Group IV: feed mixture with coconut oil and CDDGS. The results confirmed the relationship between dietary fatty acid profile and acid content in fat tissue. CDDGS reduced SFA/UFA ratios and increased iodine values ( P < 0.001) and TBA-RS in the subcutaneous adipose tissue of backfat. Replacing rapeseed oil in a diet including CDDGS with beef tallow or coconut oil enabled the pigs to accumulate more SFA in backfat and reduce iodine value. The genes selected in the present experiment, and which are believed to be associated with lipid metabolism, had been identified as DEGs (differentially expressed genes) in an RNA sequence experiment performed previously to explore the coexpression of these genes after different diets. Expression of the genes, evaluated by Real-Time q-PCR, was not affected in any case by the pig’s sex. The expression levels in liver tissue for genes APOA4, ACSL5, CYP2C49, CYP2B22, and GSTO1 were significantly different among groups, while for CYP7A1 the differences identified by RNA sequencing were not confirmed. The expression levels of estimated genes were correlated with the fatty acid profile in a diet, but not with fattening performance results or carcass quality traits. To summarize, CDDGS included in feed mixtures can negatively influence subcutaneous adipose tissue traits important for processing and shelf-life. Dietary factors, such as fat sources characterized by a high degree of saturation, improved the hardness and oxidative stability of the backfat. The fatty acid profile of dietary fat sources affected the expression levels of genes associated with lipid metabolism in the liver. Coconut oil and beef tallow increased the expression levels of genes ACSL5, APOA4, GSTO1, CYP2B22 , and CYP2C49 . Moreover, most of the genes were co-expressed within the diet, which suggests the possibility of their co-regulation. Further studies will be conducted on metabolic pathways in which the analyzed genes are involved to understand the molecular mechanisms of their activity and possible health effects of their overexpression. BACKGROUND Recovering high value-added substances (oil, zein and carotenoids) from corn distillers dried grains with solubles ( DDGS), the major coproduct of bioethanol, is important to enhance the profit of the corn ethanol process. Currently, few studies have been reported on separating high value-added substances in a process suitable for industrialization. In this article, a semi-continuous countercurrent extraction method was investigated to refine the corn DDGS. RESULTS First, an oil yield as high as 94.5% (based on oil content in DDGS) was measured using a series of five packed columns. Second, the DDGS residues after oil extraction were used for zein extraction, obtaining a zein yield of 24.5% (based on protein content in DDGS) with a series of four packed columns. Moreover, the carotenoids in zein were extracted by anhydrous ethanol in a Soxhlet apparatus. The extractives, which accounted for 17% of the original mass of zein, had a carotenoids content of 2.4 mg g−1. Finally, zein was decolored by hydrogen peroxide to form a whiter product. CONCLUSIONS The semi-continuous countercurrent method was developed successfully to refine the corn DDGS. The corn oil with high acid value was a perfect feedstock for biodiesel. The objective of this study was to examine the effects of combining corn DDGS with crude glycerin on growth performance and carcass traits to determine if a high level of crude glycerin supplementation could counteract the impact of corn DDGS on fatty acid profile of pork adipose. The experimental design was a 3 × 2 factorial arrangement of treatments with three levels of corn DDGS (0, 150, or 250 g/kg diet) and two levels of crude glycerin (0 or 100 g/kg diet). Pigs were fed one of six experimental diets over a 3-phase feeding program for 84 d with each diet within phase formulated to be equal in metabolizable energy (ME) and standardized ileal digestible lysine (SID Lys). Pigs and feeders were weighed every 14 d to determine average daily gain (ADG), average daily feed intake (ADFI) and feed efficiency (G:F). On d-84, pigs were weighed and scanned using real-time ultrasound to obtain fat depth and longissimus dorsi muscle (LM) area. Pigs were then harvested at a commercial abattoir and a sample of adipose was collected from the jowl of each pig. Because there was no interaction between level of corn DDGS and crude glycerin fed, only main effects are presented. Pig performance and carcass characteristics were not affected by dietary treatment (P ≥ 0.05). Differences in fatty acid composition were present due to dietary treatment. Increasing the level of corn DDGS reduced concentration of both saturated fatty acids (SFA) and monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA) and increased the concentration of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) in pork jowl adipose (P<0.01). Pigs fed 100 g crude glycerin/kg diet had higher concentrations of MUFA and lower concentrations of PUFA (P<0.05). Diets containing up to 250 g corn DDGS/kg and 100 g crude glycerin/kg support growth of finishing pigs. However, increasing dietary levels of corn DDGS increased the concentration of unsaturated fatty acids in pork jowl adipose and this was not ameliorated by feeding 100 g/kg crude glycerin. The specific objectives of this experiment were to investigate the effects of adding 10% or 30% corn dried distillers grains with solubles (DDGS) to the dairy cow diet and the effects of bedding type (wood shavings, straw or peat moss) in dairy slurry on fugitive CH4 emissions. The addition of DDGS10 to the dairy cow diet significantly increased (29%) the daily amount of fat excreted in slurry compared to the control diet. The inclusion of DDGS30 in the diet increased the daily amounts of excreted DM, volatile solids (VS), fat, neutral detergent fiber (NDF), acid detergent fiber (ADF) and hemicellulose by 18%, 18%, 70%, 30%, 15% and 53%, respectively, compared to the control diet. During the storage experiment, daily fugitive CH4 emissions showed a significant increase of 15% (p < 0.05) for the slurry resulting from the corn DDGS30 diet. The addition of wood shavings and straw did not have a significant effect on daily fugitive CH4 emissions relative to the control diet, whereas the addition of peat moss caused a significant increase of 27% (p < 0.05) in fugitive CH4 emissions. Mycotoxins are harmful secondary fungal metabolites central to food and feed safety management. These toxins are detrimental to animal health and even at low levels can compromise performance. Focus on clinical signs like decreased feed intake and vomiting overlook significant impacts of mycotoxicosis, including increased disease incidence and severity, immune dysfunction, inflammation, and modulation of the gastrointestinal environment. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of harvest year on five major mycotoxin groups: aflatoxins (Afla), type A trichothecenes (A-Trich), type B trichothecenes (B-Trich), fumonisins (FUM), and zearalenone (ZEN) in corn and corn DDGS samples. For each mycotoxin group within ingredient, 2019 harvest (329 corn and 20 corn DDGS) were compared with 2020 harvest (27 corn and 21 corn DDGS). Data were analyzed using GLIMMIX procedure of SAS with harvest year as fixed effect and sample as the experimental unit. Average B-Trich and FUM contamination levels in corn are significantly (P < 0.05) affected by harvest year. However, B-Trich levels remained consistent, whereas FUM decreased (P < 0.05) from 2019 to 2020. Contamination levels in corn for Afla, A-Trich, and ZEN have remained consistent (P > 0.05) from 2019 to 2020. In corn DDGS, B-Trich contamination level was decreased (P < 0.05) from 2019 to 2020, whereas FUM and ZEN contamination levels remained similar (P > 0.05). The 2020 crop risk profile is likely to change as the sample pool expands. A combination of hot weather, storm events, and drought during the 2020 growing season resulted in crop stress and damage, ultimately leading to grain quality and mycotoxin contamination concerns. Due to the continued risk of mycotoxin co-occurrence, expanding mitigation strategies beyond adsorption by mycotoxin deactivation with biotransformation and additional support of immune and liver function is essential. This study investigated the individual and interactive effects of three factors - temperature, inoculum/substrate ratio (ISR) and inoculum typology - on the anaerobic digestion of corn ethanol distillery wastewater. Biochemical methane potential assays planned with factorial design with two independent quantitative variables on three levels (ISR: 1:1, 2:1 and 3:1; temperature: 30°C, 33.5°C, 37°C) and one independent qualitative variable (inoculum type: suspended, granular, mixed) have been performed. Response Surface Methodology has been used to study the effect of the factors with the aim of maximizing the specific methane yields (Y) obtainable with this substrate. The results show that all three investigated factors influence in a significant matter the Y, the ISR having the strongest effect on it. The temperature has significant influence on the Y only in combination with high ISR values. The optimal conditions for the maximum Y (551 mL CH g VS) have been found at 37°C operating temperature, ISR=3:1 and using granular inoculum. These conditions gave rise to a 4-fold increase of Y with respect to the worst combination of factors (Y=129 mL g VS for the suspended inoculum type, at 30°C and ISR=1:1). Background: Distiller's dried grains with solubles (DDGS) are coproducts of the biofuel industries that use corn as raw material. This cereal is commonly contaminated by mycotoxins, including fumonisins (FBs), which can pose a serious health threat to humans and animals. Corn DDGS are typically used as a protein-rich animal feed. As mycotoxins from the original cereal grains become concentrated in DDGS, mycotoxicological monitoring is highly required before their use as ingredient in the industry., Results: This work aimed to develop a methodology for predicting fumonisins B 1 (FB 1 ) and B 2 (FB 2 ) in corn DDGS using near-infrared reflectance spectroscopy (NIRS) technology associated with chemometric methods. One hundred and ninety corn DDGS samples originating from Brazilian ethanol plants and feed mills were included in this assessment. Two datasets were created: one for calibration (132 samples) and another for external validation (58 samples). Partial least squares regression and a cross-validation approach were applied to build the models. Liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry was used as the reference methodology. Calibration results of correlation coefficient and residual prediction deviation for FB 1 and FB 2 were, respectively, 0.90 and 0.88; and 2.16 and 2.06., Conclusion: Values of the external validation dataset were compared and no statistical difference was found between groups, indicating a satisfactory predictive ability and confirming the potential of NIRS to predict fumonisins in corn DDGS. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry., (© 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.)

Abstract: The trial was conducted to investigate effects of corn dried distillers grains with soluble (DDGS) and compound enzymes on growth performance, carcass fat quality, and plasma and tissue redox homeostasis in growing-finishing pigs. 200 Pigs (Duroc×Landrace×Yorkshire, about 30kg BW) were randomly allotted to one of four treatment groups (5pens/treatment and 10pigs/pen). The control (T0) was fed a basal corn-soybean meal diet. Treatment 1 (T1), 2 (T2), and 3 (T3) were fed corn-soybean meal-DDGS diets, with 10% corn DDGS in growing phase and 15% in finishing phase, respectively. 0.2g/kg compound enzymes were added to the diets of T2 and T3 and digestible energy (DE) level of T3 was reduced 0.21MJ/kg. The results of growth performance showed that all groups had comparable (P>0.05) results on ADG (682.15g, 671.99g, 709.28g, 700.29g), ADFI (2.00kg, 2.02kg, 2.04kg, 2.10kg) and feed conversion ratio (2.94, 3.01, 2.88, 3.00). Nevertheless, DDGS containing diets significantly increased iodine value (P<0.05) and decreased fat melting point of backfat and belly fat (P<0.05). For backfat and longissimus muscle (LM) intramuscular fat, DDGS containing diets increased unsaturated fatty acids (UFA) content (especially oleic acid and linoleic acid) (P<0.05), while decreased saturated fatty acids (SFA) content (especially palmitic acid and stearic acid) (P<0.05) and SFA:UFA ratio (P<0.05). Furthermore, DDGS containing diets reduced antioxidant activity of plasma and tissue. The activity of glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and total antioxidative capacity (T-AOC) of plasma decreased in T1, T2 and T3 compared to T0, while malondialdehyde (MDA) content increased, especially in T3 (P<0.05). DDGS containing diets slightly decreased the activity of GSH-Px, SOD and T-AOC in liver and cardiac muscle (especially T3), while increased MDA content of kidney and spleen significantly (P<0.05). In conclusion, although there were no negative effects on the growth performance of growing-finishing pigs, DDGS containing diets decreased carcass fat quality by increasing iodine value and UFA content in backfat and LM intramuscular fat and decreasing fat melting point and SFA:UFA ratio, and altered the redox homeostasis of plasma and tissue by increasing oxidant (MDA) content and decreasing antioxidant content. Abstract: The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of corn distillers dried grains with solubles (cDDGS) and xylanase in corn-based diets on growth performance and digestibility of diet components in broiler chickens. The experiment was a 3×4 factorial design with diets containing 3 levels of cDDGS (0, 100 and 200g/kg) and 4 levels of xylanase (0, 1200, 2400 and 3600U/kg). The diets were fed to 720 Cobb 500 chicks for 42 days. Excreta was collected at 18–21 days to measure coefficients of total tract apparent digestibility (CTTAD) and ileal digesta was collected at 42 days to measure coefficients of ileal apparent digestibility (CIAD). Dietary cDDGS caused poor (P<0.05) feed conversion ratio (FCR) of broilers from 1 to 21 and 22 to 42 days, but increased (P<0.05) feed intake (FI) at 1–21 days. Inclusion of xylanase increased (P<0.05) FI by 4–5% at 1–21 days, and did not affect (P≥0.05) FCR in either period. In the two growing periods, cDDGS decreased (P<0.05) the CTTAD of dry matter (DM), and the CIAD of DM and hemicelluloses, whereas xylanase increased (P<0.05) the digestibility of DM and hemicellulose by 5% and 20%, respectively. There were significant interactions (P<0.05) between cDDGS and xylanase for BWG and energy digestibility. In comparison with the 100g/kg cDDGS diet, the inclusion of 200g/kg cDDGS led to poorer (P<0.05) FCR at 22–42 days, and lower (P<0.05) CTTAD of DM at 18–21 days. There were no differences (P≥0.05) in most growth parameters between the doses of xylanase at 1200, 2400 and 3600U/kg. Xylanase at 2400U/kg increased (P<0.05) CTTAD of DM compared with the lower dose, but 3600U/kg xylanase showed no further improvement (P≥0.05) on digestibility measurements. This study evaluated the effects of replacing soybean meal (SBM) with DDGS and crystalline amino acids on growth, carcass lean, and carcass yield of finishing pigs. Pigs (n = 480; 83.1±0.35 kg) were blocked by BW and sex and assigned to 80 pens (3 gilts and 3 barrows/pen). Diets were balanced for ideal protein and NE and contained 0.75% and 0.67% SID lysine for Phase 1 (21 days) and Phase 2 (to market, 13 or 20 days), respectively. Only 0.49% LYS was necessary to meet the SID lysine requirement for the highest LYS (0.6%) diet for Phase 2. As LYS increased, dietary SBM inclusion decreased from 21.75% to 2.85% (Phase 1) and 18.75% to 3.35% (Phase 2) for control diets. It decreased from 18.40% to 0% (Phase 1) and 15.40 to 0% (Phase 2) for DDGS diets. During Phase 1, DDGS decreased ADG (992 vs. 1039 g/d; P = 0.031) and ADFI (3424 vs. 3503 g/d; P = 0.061). Increasing LYS linearly decreased ADG (1031, 1037, 1035, 959 g/d; P=0.026) and G:F (299, 295, 298, 281 g/kg; P = 0.026). Treatments did not impact Phase 2 performance. Overall, DDGS reduced ADG (1098 vs. 1131 g/d; P = 0.048) and ADFI (3638 vs 3712 g/d; P = 0.070). Supplemental LYS linearly decreased ADG (1133, 1141, 1120, and 1064 g/d; P = 0.005) and G:F (310, 305, 304, and 295 g/kg; P = 0.006). ADFI increased quadratically (P = 0.002) with LYS within SBM control, but not DDGS (interaction; P = 0.009). Ultrasound loin-eye-area corrected for BW tended to decrease quadratically (48.3, 48.8, 49.1, 47.4 cm2; P = 0.060) with increasing LYS. DDGS reduced carcass yield (72.62 vs. 73.04%; P = 0.034). This study evaluated the effect of replacing soybean meal (SBM) with DDGS and crystalline amino acids on growth and carcass lean. Pigs (n = 512; 38.51±0.13 kg BW) were blocked by BW and sex and placed in 64 pens (4 gilts and barrows per pen). Treatments were arranged as a 2×4 factorial with DDGS included at 0 or 25% and L-lysine-HCl (LYS) added at 0, 0.2, 0.4, and 0.6%. Dietary SBM inclusion declined as LYS increased from 32.06 to 13.14% (Phase 1) and 28.25 to 9.40% (Phase 2) for control diets. It declined from 27.85 to 8.89% (Phase 1) and 24.05 to 5.10% (Phase 2) for DDGS diets. Diets contained 1.00 (Phase 1, 21 days) and 0.90% (Phase 2, 18 days) SID lysine and were balanced for ideal protein and net energy. During Phase 1, DDGS decreased ADG (P = 0.06; 786 vs. 821 g/d). Increasing LYS increased (quadratic, P ≤ 0.05) ADG and ADFI with the greatest response at 0.4% LYS. G:F decreased (linear, P = 0.035) with increasing LYS. During Phase 2, increasing LYS in control, but not DDGS diets, decreased (linear, P < 0.005) ADG and ADFI. G:F declined (P = 0.054) with DDGS inclusion (370 vs. 383 g/kg). Overall, ADG decreased (linear, P = 0.005) as LYS increased in control (959, 929, 908, 860 g/d), but not DDGS diets (863, 908, 931, 832 g/d). ADFI decreased (linear, P = 0.014) with increasing LYS in control (2270, 2198, 2186, 2130 g/d), but increased (quadratic, P = 0.039) in DDGS diets (2112, 2207, 2324, 2103 g/d). DDGS reduced (P≤0.03) ADG (883 vs. 914 g/d), G:F (405 vs. 417 g/kg) and LEA (34.5 vs. 35.3 cm2), while increasing LYS decreased (linear, P < 0.005) G:F (417, 419, 409, 401 g/kg) and LEA (35.34, 35.17, 35.46, 33.64 cm2). We investigated the impact of steeping corn DDGS over 72 h with or without fiber degrading enzymes (FDE) and protease (PRO) on concentration of sugar, acetic and lactic acid, and pH. The concentration of crude fat, CP, NDF and ADF in DDGS sample was 8.6, 30.8, 36.1, 12.2% DM, respectively. Treatments were: 1) DDGS steeped without enzymes (Control), 2) DDGS steeped with FDE (FDE), 3) DDGS steeped with protease (PRO), 4) DDGS steeped with combination (FDEPRO). Enzymes were added at 1% of DDGS. Briefly, 50g of DDGS was mixed with 500-mL water with or without enzymes in sterile plastic bottles and steeped for 0, 12, 24, 48 and 72-h at 37℃ with continuous agitation. Samples were aliquoted to individual bottle for each timepoint. At each time point, bottles were pulled out from the incubator for pH measurements and liquid medium supernatant for sugars and acids. Highest arabinose, xylose and glucose was observed at 12 and 24 h, followed by decrease at 48 and 72 h. At 12 h, arabinose was higher (P < 0.05) for FDE and FDEPRO than control. The highest xylose and glucose was seen at 12 h for PRO, FDE and FDEPRO while control was highest at 24 h. Acetic acid and lactic acid increased over time. At 72 h, FEDPRO had highest acetic acid compared to control and PRO, while lactic acid was highest for FDE and FDPRO compared with (P < 0.0001) control and PRO. The pH decreased (P < 0.05) over time for all treatments. At 72 h, FDE had lowest pH followed by FDEPRO, PRO and control (P <.0001). Overall, arabinose, xylose and glucose increased to a certain timepoint and decreased, while lactic and acetic acid increased over time, subsequently leading to lowest pH at 72 h. Simple Summary: Feeding agroindustrial byproducts to ruminants can have multiple benefits, such as lowering feeding costs, reducing competition with human food, decreasing environmental impact associated with byproducts disposal, and improving the quality of animal products. In order to use these byproducts in practical feeding, their effects on animal performance and health should be assessed. In this study, we evaluated the effect of replacing 44% of conventional feeds in a high-cereal concentrate for light lambs with three byproducts: Corn distiller's dried grains with solubles (18%), dried citrus pulp (18%), and exhausted olive cake (8%), all of which are highly produced in the Mediterranean area. We observed that the inclusion of these byproducts did not affect feed intake, growth performance, ruminal fermentation (with exception of NH3-N concentrations), or plasma metabolites in growing lambs. Compared with the high-cereal concentrate, feeding the concentrate including the byproducts resulted in a reduction of potentially human-edible ingredients from 64.4% to 38.7%. In conclusion, 44% of cereal grains and protein feeds in the concentrate for light lambs can be replaced with a mixture of corn distiller's dried grains with solubles, dried citrus pulp, and exhausted olive cake without negatively affecting growing performance and animal health. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of replacing cereals and protein concentrates in a high-cereal concentrate (control) for light lambs with corn distiller's dried grains with solubles (DDGS; 18%), dried citrus pulp (DCP; 18%), and exhausted olive cake (EOC; 8%) in a byproduct (BYP) concentrate on growth performance, digestibility, ruminal fermentation, and plasma metabolites. Two homogeneous groups of Lacaune lambs (13.8 kg ± 0.25 kg) were fed one of each concentrates and barley straw ad libitum until reaching about 26 kg body weight. There were no differences between groups on feed intake, average daily gain, or feed conversion ratio, but the control diet had greater (p < 0.001) dry matter digestibility. Diet had no effect on post-mortem ruminal pH and total volatile fatty acid concentrations and profile, but NH3-N concentrations were lower (p = 0.003) for the BYP-fed group compared with the control one. However, plasma concentrations of amino acids, total proteins, urea, and hepatic enzymes were not affected by the diet. In conclusion, 44% of feed ingredients in the concentrate for light lambs can be replaced with a mixture of corn DDGS, DCP, and EOC without negatively affecting growing performance and animal health.
