This article revisits the notion of behaviour settings, coined by Roger G. Barker (Barker 1968, Ecol. Psychol. 28, 39–55 (10.1080/10407413.2016.1121744)), as a useful concept for the analysis of situations and communicative needs of persons after larynx removal surgery (laryngectomy). We claim that behaviour settings offer a way to characterize types of situations and types of participation, which, in turn, helps to identify aspects of communication where compensation is needed; these steps are crucial in the design process of reliable and context-sensitive speech aids. Moreover, we advocate complementing the behaviour setting concept as a unit of analysis with modern developments in the cognitive sciences, such as conversational analysis of co-operative actions (Goodwin 2017, Co-operative action (learning in doing: social, cognitive and computational perspectives). Cambridge: Cambridge University Press (10.1017/9781139016735)) and the analysis of multi-perspectival experience (De Jaegher 2021, Phenomenol. Cogn. Sci. 20, 847–870 (10.1007/s11097-019-09634-5)). Such an integration of macro- and micro-level patterns should help discover the relevant relations and values in particular situations. We illustrate our claims with examples from Barker's own work and from our ongoing analyses of the everyday life of persons after laryngectomy. Human-AI conversation provides a natural, unobtrusive, yet under-explored way to investigate trust dynamics in human-AI teams (HATs). In this paper, we modeled dynamic trust evolution in conversations using a novel method, trajectory epistemic network analysis (T-ENA). T-ENA captures the multidimensional aspect of trust (i.e., analytic and affective), and trajectory analysis segments conversations to capture temporal changes of trust over time. Twenty-four participants performed a habitat maintenance task assisted by a conversational agent and verbalized their experiences and feelings after each task. T-ENA showed that agent reliability significantly affected people's conversations in the analytic process of trust, t (38.88) = 15.18 , p < 0.001 , Cohen ′ s d = 4.72 , such as discussing agents' errors. The trajectory analysis showed that trust dynamics manifested through conversation topic diversity and flow. These results showed trust dimensions and dynamics in conversation should be considered interdependently and suggested that an adaptive conversational strategy for managing trust in HATs. This study delves into the pivotal role of adjacency pairs (APs) as fundamental units in conversation analysis, with a specific focus on their application in the context of detective novels, notably exemplified in the works of Agatha Christie. APs, consisting of a first pair part (FPP) and a second pair part (SPP) are crucial tools in understanding the dynamics of dialogue, as they reveal underlying structures and meanings within conversations. Thus, the present study aims to determine the most dominant pattern of adjacency pairs which are utilized in shaping the dialogue in Christie’s works; and to investigate how Christie employs a specific adjacency pair pattern to impart a distinctive touch to her detective narratives. Depending on these aims, the following hypotheses are proposed: Firstly the superiority of these adjacency pairs is given to (Question–Answer/ Clarification) pattern. Secondly, the use of the (Announcement – Acceptance / Denial) pattern is an unexpected way to identify the criminal of the novel. In order to test the validity of these hypotheses. The novel (The Murder of Roger Ackroyd) by Agatha Christie is analyzed by adopting eclectic models i.e. Coulthard (1985), Clark (1996), Schegloff (2007) and Paltridge (2012). The results of the analysis are set following mixed methods using quantitative and qualitative methods The present study concludes that writers can leverage Agatha Christie's adept use of adjacency pairs employing (Question-Answer), to elevate narrative impact. Screenwriters adapting Christie's works for visual media can benefit from understanding the significance of these pairs in guiding dialogue construction for cinematic portrayal. These insights can be incorporated into literature or linguistics courses as case studies, serving as teaching tools to illustrate effective linguistic devices and deepen comprehension of narrative strategies.

Few ideas have figured more centrally in the history of social theory than that of the division of labor. Here we ask whether conversational interaction, like other forms of social activity, exhibits a division of labor and, if so, what functions this serves and how it might be understood in relation to the theories of Marx and Durkheim. We begin by noting that, though conversational participants actively work to achieve and sustain understanding, much of the time this work is invisible and only its products are displayed in the form of sequentially fitted next turns at talk. However, in sequences of other-initiated repair, the work involved in the maintenance of intersubjectivity rises to the surface. On these occasions, we can see and thus describe what participants do to achieve and sustain what they take to be adequate understanding. In our data, which consist of video recordings of casual conversations among Vietnamese same-generation peers, participants continuously display an orientation to relations of relative seniority through the selection of terms used to accomplish interlocutor reference. This pervasive orientation is also reflected in practices of repair initiation. Specifically, seniors regularly initiate repair with so-called "open class" forms such as "huh?" and "ha?" which display a minimal grasp of the talk targeted, require little effort to produce and, at the same time, push responsibility for resolving the problem onto the trouble source speaker (i.e., the junior member of the dyad). In contrast, juniors often initiate repair of a senior participant's talk by displaying a detailed understanding of what has been said, either in the form of a repeat or a reformulation, and inviting the senior to confirm. We suggest then that this asymmetry in the distribution of initiation practices reflects a "division of intersubjective labor". We conclude with some thoughts on the theoretical implications of our findings and relate them not only to the theories of Marx and Durkheimbut also to the writings of feminist sociolinguists who sought to describe the way in which women seemto be burdenedmore thanmen with what Fishman called "interactional shitwork." In this paper, based on video recordings of Orientation and Mobility (O&M) lessons for visually-disabled students, I will examine how occasioned maps (Psathas, 1979; Garfinkel, 2002), drawn in the student's palm are interactionally traced, felt, and noticed in order to represent the shape of a crossing for all practical purposes. Touching will be examined from the perspective of the live production of "trails" on a specific region of the body, the palm of the hand. We will begin to question how such hand-drawing map episodes occur during O&M courses, stressing how the coparticipants establish a participation framework that facilitates the making of the drawing, hand-map drawings are based on lines that are neither evanescent nor permanent. Their "persistence" is not an intrinsic feature but a systematic multimodal accomplishment. We will show how the drawn lines become depictions of the streets and contribute to producing two contrasting geometrical representations of the layout of a junction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the teaching-learning process, the lecturers usually play the role of dominant turn-takers. Meanwhile, students mostly perform as small turn-takers. In EFL classrooms, different turn-taking patterns are essential to analyze to identify the students' language politeness during the turn-taking process. The present study analyzed the turn-taking and relational work concerning politeness in online class discussions. For this study, a conversational analysis was performed on online class(es) discussions between students and lectures. A video recording of a classroom conversation between ELT and TEFL was employed. The study found that 16 out of 40 quotations displayed a turn-taking of the Appealing Strategy (AS). The relational work strategy of Being Cooperative (BC) was cited in 22 of 40 quotes. In relational work strategies, BC indicated that the students' responses related to what the lecturer mentioned. Turn-taking and relational work strategies could be one of the tools to determine the students' politeness by combining the characteristics as politeness indicators that focus on students' answers when speaking with the lecturer. Further investigations on gender disparities that use turn-taking and relational work to maintain politeness in online lecturer-student dialogues may prove insightful.

In this article, I analyze the meaning-making struggle within a major Polish vaccine-hesitant cyber community triggered by the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. Based on an online observation of interactions directly following the outbreak in Poland, and in-depth content and conversational analysis of selected conversations, I posit that the pandemic circumstances were experienced in this community as a pervasively ambiguous situation: ambivalent in cognitive, emotional, and epistemic dimensions. The article identifies collective social processes embedded in digital interactions through which this initial ambiguity was ordered, and narratives of the pandemic emerged, enabling the collective management of fear of the novel infection. The paper investigates and analyses linguistic strategies and conversational dynamics that unravel during the first Maxitrial (1986), by focusing on two figures that had a great media resonance: Tommaso Buscetta e Salvatore Contorno. The transcriptions of a portion of the deposition given by the two collaborators of justice compose the subject of this analysis. The vast and sometimes impetuous ocean of words that the two informants let run or try to stop, during their interrogations, has allowed to formulate some hypotheses about the goals pursued by them, on the basis that the identification of a specific linguistic habitus, besides categorizing individuals, has a central role in the construction of the self-image. Moreover, both had a crucial role in the disambiguation of the language inside "Cosa nostra", clearing verbal and not verbal aspects of an organization that used the unsaid, the implied and the metaphor, as his principal communication code, even confirming during the trial, their affinity with the Mafia code of conduct. Within the framework of this study – based on the texts of informal interviews published in English-language tabloids – the illocution of reactive disagreement is defined as an effective pragmatic mechanism for the coherent unfolding of the text, jointly generated by the interlocutors. Based on the method of conversational analysis, the constructive potential of a negative response to the propositional content and assessments that form a stimulating assertive message of the interviewer is revealed. Attention is focused on the form and content of the responses, explicitly/implicitly expressing disagreement, their pragmatic functions and role in ensuring the coherence of dialogical unity, reflecting the discussion of a specific topic by the interlocutors. It is established that in order to minimize discursive confrontation, the respondent can react with disagreement, which has a delayed character, with a preliminary expression of concession in favor of the effectiveness of the interviewer’s point of view. At the same time, in order to create relevant conditions for the implementation of a relaxed / partial disagreement, the respondent can initiate several dialogical moves. As a result, the stimulating judgments of the interviewer are interpreted as one of the alternative versions of the interpretation of the event or fact being discussed, and an informal conversation produces a pragmatic effect of intrigue. A softened form of disagreement can also be implemented by reacting replicas with blurred semantics due to hedging and markers of epistemic modality, a detailed explanation of the facts associated with the topic under discussion, activation of the shift of the current attention of the interviewer and the target audience. The motives underlying the reactive implementation of direct/implicit disagreement are revealed: the respondent’s desire to hide information about the prospects of his creative activity, which is requested by the interviewer, to avoid disharmony in interpersonal interaction, the gap between the interlocutors’ background knowledge, the dissimilarity of their axiological positions regarding the topic of discussion. A pragmatic justification of these motives is given. It is concluded that the reactive remarks of disagreement, implemented in the context of an informal interview, predetermine the conflict-free unfolding of interpersonal interaction of interlocutors due to the deliberate minimization of the threat to their social face from the respondent.

Interfaith dialogue is a promising conflict resolution method and encourages participants to learn about and appreciate religious diversity. Yet, participants often need a facilitator's help to learn how to converse successfully across areas of ideological differences, such as religion. A valuable resource for facilitators and scholars of interfaith dialogue would be intricate knowledge of how successful dialogue happens, particularly when participants disagree with one another. In this study, applied conversation analysis was used to examine moments of disagreement in interfaith dialogue. Beginning with abdicated other-initiated repair, participants expressed differences in opinion through assertion and counter-assertion sequences where they followed both other- and self-selected turn-taking patterns and used membership categories to bolster their claims. Based on video recordings of five pre-k to grade 4 Chinese dual-language bilingual education (DLBE) teachers' classroom instruction, this article examines the Chinese DLBE teachers' target and first language use and pedagogical moves during their processes of learning to teach in immersion schools in the US. Conversational analyses of classroom interactions show that the teachers' subscribed to target language (TL) only instruction with minimum translanguaging and that teacher-fronted talk in the TL dominated their teaching with low student language output. Although their attention to curriculum-related content varied depending on lesson focus and student TL proficiency, a significant amount of teacher languaging practices was for classroom management. The paper is focused on the critical exploration of an experiment held in the Ukrainian media environment. The results of the experiment are reflected in the book Freedom of Speech Against Fear and Humiliation published by Savik Shuster (2018), the Ukrainian political journalist and the Freedom of Speech TV talk show host. The study aims to define factors and predictors of the Ukrainian audience’s social behavior. In this regard, narrative, conversational, and intent analyses of his talk show participants’ conflict interaction described in the book, were applied. These tools made it possible to explicate his narratives’ main topics, their prominence, role positions, archetypal patterns of the participant, and host’s behavior. The narrative structure of “negative” scenarios of the talk show described in the book enabled defining the host as the encourager of the speakers’ conflict behavior, high tension of their discourse that leads to deconstructing, discrediting, and demonizing the opponent’s political party image. Although Schuster's conclusions were full of dramatic statements and almost apocalyptic predictions, their reinterpretation was necessary. The application of F-test as a measure of testing statistical hypotheses relevant to empirical data, allowed to search for additional political and psychological explanatory models of the “emotional map of Ukraine”. The results of the study demonstrate hidden suggestion of hopelessness, feelings of betrayal, protest moods inspired by the speakers invited to the TV show. This adversely affects the critical understanding of current social processes along with the radicalization of public sentiment by shifting the locus of control to the outside, when the audience invited to the show delegates responsibility for the state of affairs in the country and their own well-being to their political leaders.

According to the researcher's knowledge a lot of interviews have been studied pragmatically, but no one has tackled them in a conversation analysis study. So, this field needs research because it is one of the scientific fields that was not previously studied. The study aims at 1- examining the dominant of the turn taking system between the participants in the interview. 2- The analysis is focused on the utterances said by speakers of the dialogue between Luara Kuenssberg and Boris Johnson. The study hypothesizes that 1- the textual structure of interview is organized in accordance with feature of the turn-taking system. 2- turn taking system dominants the participants in their interview. To achieve the aims of the present study and to validate its hypotheses, one script of political interviews is selected. The theoretical model used as the basis for the analytical work is a synthesis of theoretical views and practical procedures proposed and used by Sacks, H, Schegloff, E, and Jefferson, G, (1978). The present study employed a descriptive qualitative approach since the findings were presented in narrative or textual descriptions. The conclusions of the analysis confirm the two hypotheses of the present study. They are as follows :1- Structures of interviews are organized in accordance with specific features operating on the turn-taking system. Turn allocation process is controlled by the interviewer who is considered the main controller of the conversation. 2- Interviewers alone can maintain their turns by continuous speech causing temporal overlap in the display of turns.

The assessment of prospective adoptive parents is a complex task for professional social workers. In this study, we examine the structure and function of professional social workers' follow-up questions in assessment talk with adoption applicants. The analysis shows that adoption assessment through interviews involved a delicate and complex task that was accomplished by using a particular genre of institutional talk. This both invited the applicants' extended and 'open-ended' responses and steered these responses and their development towards the institutionally relevant topics. Detailed interaction analysis demonstrates that social workers used a broad range of question types to steer and guide applicants' responses, organising talk about specific assessment topics. On the basis of initial open-ended topic initiations and applicants' responses, the social workers steered topic development by using follow-up moves such as polar questions and clarifying questions that asked for specification, challenged applicants' ideas, confirmed their knowledge and encouraged self-reflection. These follow-up moves allowed social workers to achieve the progression of talk into relevant areas of investigation and constituted a central and characteristic feature of assessment interviews. We suggest that they allow social workers to accomplish two hybrid institutional goals: i) the assessment of applicants' suitability and ii) applicants' preparation for future parenthood. The formulation of computer algorithms requires the elimination of vagueness. This elimination of vagueness requires exactness in programming, and this exactness can be traced to meeting talk, where it intersects with the indexicality of expressions. This article is concerned with sequences in which a team of computer scientists discuss the functionality of prototypes that are already implemented or possibly to be implemented. The analysis focuses on self-repair because this is a practice where participants can be seen to orient to meanings of different expressions as alternatives. By using self-repair, the computer scientists show a concern with exact descriptions when they talk about existing functionality of their prototypes but not when they talk about potential future functionality. Instead, when participants talk about potential future functionality and attend to meanings during self-repair, they use vague expressions to indicate possibilities. Furthermore, when the computer scientists talk to external stakeholders, they indicate through hedges whenever their descriptions approximate already implemented technical functionality but do not describe it exactly. The article considers whether the code of working prototypes can be said to fix meanings of expressions and how we may account for human agency and non-human resistances during development. This article describes a collaborative and data-based reflective practice study carried out by two language teachers in a Japanese tertiary education context. This research utilized conversational analysis (CA) of audiorecorded classroom data which was subsequently discussed as part of a critical friendship. Both the inclusion of CA data and collegial discussion were in response to recent calls for increasingly data-led and dialogic reflective practice methods. In this study, the two teacher-researchers identified salient issues that they saw as incongruent with their stated teaching beliefs. They then collaboratively determined interventions to deal with the inconsistencies between their beliefs and their actual behavior and repeated the CA data collection and dialogic analysis phases. The two teachers found that the CA data and the opportunity to collaboratively interpret it provided valuable insights into their classroom practice while also offsetting the tendency for excessive self-criticism. This study provides a concrete example of a reflective practice approach that is both theoretically grounded and tied to bottom-up issues that are of interest to teachers.

Background: Mobile health platforms can facilitate social support and address HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) stigma but pose challenges for intervention design and participant engagement. Giddens's structuration theory, that individuals are shaped by—and shape—their communities through rules and resources that give them power to operate within these environments, provides a useful analytic framework for exploring these dynamic intervention spaces. Method: Data were drawn from an online randomized controlled trial intervention (HealthMpowerment) for young Black men who have sex with men to reduce condomless anal intercourse. We applied a conversational analysis informed by structuration theory to 65 user-generated conversations that included stigma content. We aimed to understand how the interdependent relationship between the intervention space and participants' contributions might contribute to behavior change. Results: Thirty five intervention participants contributed to the analyzed conversations. Our analysis identified three types of conversational processes that may underlie behavior change: (1) Through intervention engagement, participants established norms and expectations that shaped their discussions; (2) participants used anecdotes and anonymity to reinforce norms; and (3) intervention staff members sought to improve engagement and build knowledge by initiating discussions and correcting misinformation, thus playing an integral role in the online community. Conclusions: The lens of structuration theory usefully reveals potential behavior change mechanisms within the social interactions of an online intervention. There is an urgent need to understand how programming inside prisons can facilitate rehabilitation and reentry processes, especially among men convicted of violent offenses. GRIP (Guiding Rage into Power) is a year-long "Offender Accountability" program presently spreading through the California prison system. GRIP is a group-therapy and trauma-healing program that follows a somatic-awareness-centered model. We use audiovisual data to investigate the sequenced, second-to-second inner workings of what actually constitutes operational excellence in this evidence-based in-prison rehabilitation program. Making use of interaction ritual theory and conversation analysis, we demonstrate how two processes—the diffusion and the redirecting of attentional focus/mood—transpire in GRIP classrooms. The conclusion argues that these two processes may be the "hidden" building blocks, or what is lacking, in countless rehabilitation programs and other social work interventions—both inside and outside of correctional facilities. Dialogue as an important communication action, is one of the topics that has been less addressed in the field of communication science and most of the research has been done in the area of mass communication. Meanwhile, doing research in the field of human and interpersonal communication with a case-by-case perspective and a qualitative method that seeks to understand and describe a pure reality, is noteworthy in the field of communications science research. Therefore, in this research, we intend to study the class interactions in dialogical oriented sessions to clarify the structure, dimensions and components of the inquiry based dialogue. Conversation analysis studies the order/organization/orderliness of social actions, particularly those which are located in everyday interaction, in discursive practices, in the sayings/ tellings /doings of members of society. Therefore, one of the main results of conversational analysis is to identify this system with chain patterns, which builds structure upon oral behaviors during the interaction. The classroom conversational analysis shows that the overall structure of these conversations is forwarding, which means that when an idea is expressed in response to a question, participants are required to respond to an "agreement" or "opposition" to that idea. This reaction often leads to the correction and completion of the initial idea or clarification of it. People interconnect between the ideas proposed and say their inference from the discussion process. This kind of dialogue requires not only good intellectual stances, but also a commitment to results and rational orientation.

The article analyzes the turn taking of communication passages in the talk show discussions in the Kazakh and Russian languages. Both Kazakh and Russian TV programs are characterized by the synthetic style of turn taking of communicative roles of a presenter and guests in the studio, which combines the features of cooperative, confrontational and neutral styles. However, if the Kazakh talk show programs have smoother, monotone style of turn taking of communicative roles; in Russian talk show programs transition from cooperative communication stage at the beginning of the program to the development of confrontational discussion of the problem has been recorded.

A divergence exists between registered nurses' (RNs') intention to document together with the patient and their actual documentation practice; a practice that also diverges from official intentions of patient participation. This study aimed to explore and describe RNs' reflected experiences on patient participation in nursing documentation. A descriptive qualitative study was conducted based on three focus groups with 14 registered nurses from an acute medical ward. Content analysis and conversational analysis were performed. The reporting adhered to the COREQ checklist. The findings showed that nurses made little mention of patient participation in nursing documentation due to challenges in meeting both the patients' expected needs and nurses' needs. However, patient participation was important for time accurate and summative nursing documentation. This study adds to a critical debate on patient participation and contributes to a practice-based understanding of the challenges that registered nurses experience concerning patient participation in nursing documentation.
