Scholarly attention to foreign language learning boredom (FLLB) has surged in recent years. However, little is known about L2 learners' online FLLB experience prompted by the COVID-19 pandemic. To fill this gap, the present mixed-methods study explores the conceptual structure and sources of FLLB in an online learning environment. A corpus of 348 Chinese as second language (CSL) learners participated in a questionnaire survey and 10 of them attended follow-up interviews. Exploratory factor analysis revealed a three-factor structure underlying CSL learners' FLLB: classroom boredom, content boredom and teacher/learner boredom. Qualitative data enriched our understanding of the three-factor construct of FLLB and boredom sources in online classes. Results were discussed with reliance on the control-value theory of achievement emotions, previous findings, as well as their theoretical and practical implications for L2 teaching and learning. The newly found three-factor structure coincides with the long-lasting '3T' difficulties ['3T' difficulties refer to three major concerns in teaching CSL. They are connected with how to implement effective teaching strategies, develop high-quality teaching materials and build qualified and capable teaching teams] in International Chinese education; therefore, it inspires CSL researchers and teachers to attach more importance to the negative emotion of FLLB in the future. In its original version, control-value theory describes and explains achievement emotions. More recently, the theory has been expanded to also explain epistemic, social, and existential emotions. In this article, I outline the development of the theory, from preliminary work in the 1980s to early versions of the theory and the recent generalized control-value theory. I provide summaries of the theory’s evidence-based propositions on antecedents, outcomes, and regulation of emotions, including the fundamentally important role of control and value appraisals across different types of human emotions that are relevant to education (and beyond). The theory includes descriptive taxonomies of emotions as well as propositions explaining (a) the influence of individual factors, social environments, and socio-cultural contexts on emotions; (b) the effects of emotions on learning, performance, and health; (c) reciprocal causation linking emotions, outcomes, and antecedents; (d) ways to regulate emotions; and (e) strategies for intervention. Subsequently, I outline the relevance of the theory for educational practice, including individual and large-scale assessments of emotions; students’, teachers’, and parents’ understanding of emotions; and change of educational practices. Purpose: This study utilized the control-value theory of achievement emotions to investigate relationships between retroactive physical education (PE) beliefs and emotions with adulthood physical activity (PA) attitudes and behaviors. Method: An exploratory structural equation model was employed to evaluate participants' (N = 381) PE emotions, antecedents, and outcomes. Results: Control, intrinsic value, and extrinsic value antecedents predicted several emotions. PE enjoyment facilitated positive PA attitudes, whereas boredom and shame predicted negative PA attitudes. Shame predicted lower physical self-concept in students. Moderate to vigorous PA was traced positively with enjoyment and negatively from relief. Several indirect relationships were also observed that further support the control-value theory of achievement emotions. Conclusions: Emotions are a response to learning and finding value in PE, which clearly impacts PA-related beliefs and behaviors into adulthood. Considerations on the externally driven nature of PE outcomes (i.e., standards/performance) are needed given the juxtaposition for also targeting suggested goals like intrinsic value and enjoyment. Purpose: To explore the relationship between post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and students' academic control and academic emotion in the aftermath of a flood disaster. The findings will offer educators and relevant departments valuable insights to understand and facilitate the restoration of learning capabilities among students affected by the disaster. Methods: This study employed a combined approach of questionnaire surveys and longitudinal tracking. Students from Guangling Primary and Secondary School (Shouguang City, Weifang, Shandong Province) participated in surveys administered in September 2018, December 2018, and September 2019. The instruments utilized included the Post-Disaster Trauma Assessment Questionnaire, the Adolescent Academic Control Scale, and the mathematical version of the Achievement Emotions Questionnaire. Data analysis involved two-factor correlation and mediation effect testing. Results: Significant differences were observed in overall PTSD scores and its three dimensions between the 1-week and 1-year post-disaster assessments. Both the average PTSD score and the detection rate were higher 1 year after the disaster compared to the first week. Students' academic control demonstrated a strong positive correlation with positive academic emotions and a significant negative correlation with anxiety-related academic emotions. Cross-lagged regression analysis indicated a predictive relationship: academic control measured 3 months post-disaster significantly predicted academic emotions at the 9-month assessment, and conversely, academic emotions at the 3-month point were predictive of academic control at 9 months. In addition, academic control appears to play a complete mediating role in the relationship between PTSD and academic emotions. Conclusion: Students exhibited a range of PTSD symptoms following the disaster, with a higher prevalence noted in the first year compared to the initial week. PTSD negatively affects academic standing in these students, and is predictive of both their sense of academic control and their emotional responses to learning. Crucially, academic control and academic emotions exhibit a strong correlation and can mutually affect one another. Interventions aimed at reducing PTSD symptoms, cultivating positive academic emotions, and strengthening students' sense of academic control must therefore consider the relationship between these factors. Research on faculty emotions is scarce, despite their evident relevance for faculty well-being, higher education quality, and student outcomes. The present studies aimed to investigate six discrete emotions (enjoyment, pride, boredom, anxiety, anger, frustration) faculty may experience during grading. Study 1 compared faculty emotions for grading with emotions for research and teaching (US sample, N = 1226). Mean comparisons showed that grading generally elicited less positive and more negative emotions than research and teaching. Study 2 further examined faculty emotions for grading through the lens of control-value theory, by identifying emotion-specific appraisal patterns in two countries (US, n = 244 and Germany, n = 201). Multiple linear regressions revealed that the most consistent predictor for grading emotions across both samples was cost, in terms of the extent to which faculty perceived grading as a thankless task that kept them away from more meaningful tasks. Our findings further point to the important role of faculty–student relationships and faculty members' confidence in their grading ability for eliciting grading emotions. This study extends existing research on emotions in higher education by considering grading as a relevant emotion-inducing task, and by applying control-value theory to a new context in two countries, thereby contributing to the question of this theory's generalizability. Practical implications of our findings entail that universities should aim to improve the circumstances of grading and equip their faculty with the means to handle their grading duties well, to optimize their somewhat worrisome emotional experiences in this context. Transfer students comprise half of all undergraduate students, yet their educational experiences may differ in meaningful ways from those of traditional students. Importantly, the transfer student population is diverse and not monolithic. Achievement emotions, which occur in an iterative pattern with past experiences informing current and future emotions, are particularly understudied within the transfer population. This survey study (N = 721) examines how diverse transfer students' enjoyment and anxiety achievement emotions relate to GPA and term-to-term persistence. Results of the study showed that both anxiety and enjoyment emotions predicted term GPA and persistence for transfer students. However, when controlling for anxiety emotions, enjoyment emotions were no longer a significant predictor. These relations differed across demographic groups. Achievement emotions are an integral part of transfer students' experiences in higher education, creating opportunities for institutions to improve their students' educational outcomes. Drawing upon Pekrun's (2006) control–value theory of achievement emotions, the present study explores the relations between online teaching factors (i.e., teachers' information and communications technology (ICT) competence and provision of structure) and students' control–value appraisals and achievement emotions (i.e., enjoyment, boredom, and anxiety) in an online foreign language learning context. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with 12 international students and 6 teachers who were involved in a Chinese foreign language course delivered online during the coronavirus pandemic. Results from the thematic analysis showed that both students' and teachers' positive evaluations of teachers' ICT competence and provision of structure were associated with students' increased control beliefs and intrinsic value, but not necessarily with utility value. According to the participants, the two increased appraisals related to students' greater enjoyment and reduced feelings of boredom and anxiety during the online language learning process. Findings are discussed in light of the role of online teaching factors in shaping students' appraisals and emotional experiences in online environments, particularly during the coronavirus pandemic. AbstractDrawing on the control-value theory, this study attempts to examine the effects of cognitive appraisals (perceived control, intrinsic and extrinsic value) and achievement emotions (pride, anxiety, and boredom) on Chinese English-as-a-foreign-language (EFL) learners’ engagement in LMOOCs. In doing so, several hypotheses were proposed and validated from a survey of 520 Chinese EFL undergraduates who used LMOOCs. Based on the structural equation modelling analysis, results revealed that (1) perceived control and intrinsic value had a positive and direct impact on engagement in LMOOCs; (2) perceived control and intrinsic value had a positive effect on pride and a negative effect on anxiety and boredom, while extrinsic value only had a positive impact on pride and anxiety; (3) while pride had a positive effect on engagement, boredom negatively affected engagement in LMOOCs; (4) perceived control and intrinsic value had a positive and indirect effect on engagement mediated by pride and boredom, while extrinsic value positively affected engagement in LMOOCs through pride. Despite the ubiquity of boredom and its aversive effects in educational contexts, it has received scant attention from second/foreign language (L2) researchers until very recently. This article reports on one of the first empirical attempts to explore boredom in L2 learning and its sources in Chinese tertiary-level EFL contexts through eliciting responses of 1,502 university students to open-ended questions and conducting 16 individual semi-structured interviews. The qualitative data analysis revealed that participants perceived wide-ranging learner-internal and learner-external factors as sources of their foreign language learning boredom: (1) task characteristics, (2) teaching and learning activities, (3) student factors, (4) course content, (5) classroom factors, (6) teacher factors, and (7) feeling unoccupied in the class. Moreover, open-ended responses showed greater prominence of the first three categories of factors than others, lending support to the central role of control-value appraisals in inducing boredom, and suggesting situation-sensitive nature of boredom. Additionally, the study revealed that multiple factors, both learner-internal and learner-external, can interact and jointly shape control-value appraisals, which suggests the congruence between the person-in-context perspective on SLA and the control-value theory, and the potential to integrate the two approaches to extend L2 emotion research. English learning anxiety (ELA) is often observed in the population of Chinese university students from STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) subjects, which hinders their English acquisition and improvement. Most previous studies consider ELA as a regular emotion and measure it based on the foreign language classroom anxiety framework. Despite remarkable findings, we argue that the origins of ELA remain unclear. To address this concern, the present study revisits ELA from the lens of the control-value theory. By defining ELA as a type of achievement emotion, we assumed that ELA is the product of the high value in English learning and the low ability for learning. Hence, this study examined how students' self-efficacy, self-regulated learning abilities, intrinsic goal orientation, and task value influenced ELA. The results of decision tree classification demonstrate that the four variables can positively predict students' ELA. The feature importance analysis shows that task value is the most important predictor feature than the others, which confirms that ELA results from the high value of English learning and the weak SRL abilities. Drawing on the control-value theory, this cross-cultural research inspected the association between positive activating emotions, namely pride, hope, and enjoyment, and academic engagement among Chinese and Iranian EFL students. This study also looked into the role of these positive emotions in predicting Chinese and Iranian students’ academic engagement. Using a maximum variation sampling technique, 346 Chinese and 353 Iranian EFL students were chosen from various colleges and universities. Afterward, an online survey was sent to participants via email and common messaging apps. Following that, structural equation modelling and confirmatory factor analysis were conducted through AMOS software to analyse participants’ answers. The results obtained from CFA and SEM indicated that Chinese and Iranian students’ academic engagement is closely related to their feelings of pride, hope, and enjoyment. The results also demonstrated that pride, hope, and enjoyment can meaningfully and favourably predict Chinese and Iranian students’ academic engagement. Interestingly, no significant difference was discovered between the Chinese and Iranian measurement models. Theories in motivation science, and in psychological science more generally, are in a state of fragmentation that impedes development of a robust body of knowledge. Furthermore, fragmentation hinders communication among scientists, with practitioners, and with policymakers and the public. Theoretical integration is needed to overcome this situation. In this commentary, I first provide an overview of the integrative frameworks presented in this collection of articles. Based on this overview, I discuss if and when we should integrate theories. Several non-trivial conditions need to be met for integration, including convergence of phenomena, constructs, and theoretical propositions. Next, I address strategies for integration, including rules for merging constructs and ways to integrate propositions. I also discuss how the generation of integrative frameworks, if not successfully enacted, can paradoxically lead to further proliferation rather than a reduction of theories. In contrast, successful integration reduces redundancy and simplifies the conceptual space used to describe, explain, or predict a set of phenomena. Successful integration may require not only theoretical work but also empirical validation, strategic efforts in the scientific community, and change of institutional policies. In conclusion, I argue that within-discipline integration alone is not sufficient to overcome the current theoretical stagnation in the field. Attention to advances in neighboring disciplines, formalization of models of motivation, and theoretical differentiation to consider the specificity of constructs, populations, and contexts are needed as well. Boredom is a commonly experienced emotion that is detrimental to student performance. This study piloted Phase 2 of the Boredom Intervention Training (BIT) program which used cognitive restructuring to alter students' boredom misbeliefs. The sample consisted of 149 students from a midwestern Canadian University. We identified participants' boredom misbeliefs at baseline and employed McNemar tests to determine if students reported fewer boredom misbeliefs after viewing a psychoeducational training video. Our results revealed students reported fewer boredom misbeliefs post-video compared to pre-video (all p 's <.025). Implications of Phase 2 of the BIT program for university students are discussed. Studies on voters have shown that emotions are an important factor in politics. However, less is known about emotions experienced by adolescents in the context of civic education. Applying the control‐value theory to a cross‐curricular context, we analyze the relations between two types of emotions experienced in civic education and their antecedents and effects on learning: achievement emotions experienced during in‐class political discussions and epistemic emotions experienced during individual processing of political information in school. We hypothesized both types of emotions relate to control and value appraisal antecedents (e.g., internal political efficacy, personal importance). Further, we expected—depending on the specific emotion—positive or negative relations with academic outcomes (e.g., motivation, engagement, and knowledge). Data were collected with an online questionnaire in Austrian upper secondary schools with students (N = 594, Mage = 17.1) from grades 10 to 13. Bivariate latent correlations broadly support the expectations: We found mainly positive associations of antecedents and outcomes to enjoyment, hope, pride, curiosity, and surprise and negative associations to hopelessness, confusion, and boredom, but more complex correlation patterns for anxiety, anger, and shame. The results provide first insights into which emotions are experienced during political learning and underscore the importance of acknowledging the role of emotions in civic education. Abstract Background The effectiveness of peer learning has been recognized and discussed by many scholars, and implemented in the formal curriculums of medical schools internationally. However, there is a general dearth of studies in measuring the objective outcomes in learning. Methods We investigated the objective effect of near-peer learning on tutee’s emotions and its equivalence within the formal curriculum of a clinical reasoning Problem Based Learning session in a Japanese medical school. Fourth-year medical students were assigned to the group tutored by 6th-year students or by faculties. The positive activating emotion, positive deactivating emotion, negative activating emotion, negative deactivating emotion, Neutral emotion were measured using the Japanese version of the Medical Emotion Scale (J-MES), and self-efficacy scores were also assessed. We calculated the mean differences of these variables between the faculty and the peer tutor groups and were statistically analyzed the equivalence of these scores. The equivalence margin was defined as a score of 0.4 for J-MES and 10.0 for the self-efficacy score, respectively. Results Of the 143 eligible participant students, 90 were allocated to the peer tutor group and 53 were allocated to the faculty group. There was no significant difference between the groups. The 95% confidence interval of the mean score difference for positive activating emotions (–0.22 to 0.15), positive deactivating emotions (–0.35 to 0.18), negative activating emotions (–0.20 to 0.22), negative deactivating emotions (–0.20 to 0.23), and self-efficacy (–6.83 to 5.04) were withing the predetermined equivalence margins for emotion scores, meaning that equivalence was confirmed for these variables. Conclusions Emotional outcomes were equivalent between near-peer PBL sessions and faculty-led sessions. This comparative measurement of the emotional outcomes in near-peer learning contributes to understanding PBL in the field of medical education.

The present study adopted a mixed-methods approach to investigate the relationships between EFL (English as a foreign language) learners' perceived classroom environment (PCE), foreign language learning boredom (FLLB), and English achievement. Two hundred and seventy Chinese high school students participated in a questionnaire survey and 9 students participated in a semistructured interview. The results revealed that: 1) General PCE was negatively correlated with FLLB and positively correlated with achievement. Task orientation was the only component of PCE that significantly related to achievement; all components of PCE except student cohesiveness were significantly related to FLLB; 2) Teacher support, task orientation, and class order negatively influenced FLLB, which negatively influenced English achievement. None of the components of PCE directly influenced English achievement; 3) FLLB fully mediated the influence of teacher support and task orientation on achievement. Responses from the participants triangulated our findings in the quantitative part. According to the research findings, English teachers should adequately support their students and appropriately orient learning tasks to reduce students' boredom levels and improve their English achievement. There is widespread agreement, that today's students must develop competencies in the efficient use of information and communication technology (ICT) to cope with the demands of the 21st century. To meet this requirement, teachers must integrate ICT into their classroom activities on a regular basis. Studies have shown that the use of ICT in the classroom correlates with the level of professional knowledge and with affective-motivational dispositions (such as emotions and self-efficacy) of teachers. However, the relations between these dispositions and the extent to which these relations differ between pre- and in-service teachers have not yet been investigated. Hence, the present study examines the dispositions of 148 German pre-service and 132 German in-service primary school teachers to use ICT in geometry classes and tests for differences between these groups. To this end, a series of path models have been investigated on the basis of control-value theory in a quantitative study. Results of the invariance testing revealed only minor differences in the relations between the investigated dispositions: For in-service teachers a negative correlation between the assumed value of ICT for teaching geometry and the professional knowledge regarding ICT was found. The same does not hold true for pre-service teachers. Apart from this difference, however, the two groups were very similar. It can therefore be concluded that learning opportunities regarding the use of ICT in geometry classes do not need to differ greatly for the pre-service and in-service teachers. Introduction: This study aims to understand how emotions and motivation influence the academic achievement of physical education (PE) students and their future intention to practice physical activity (PA). Despite the influence on student's behaviors and the reciprocal associations between motivation and emotion, the number of studies addressing both constructs at the same level is very limited. Methods: A structural equation model was used with 799 students aged 11-17 years (M = 13.16; SD = 1.17). Results and discussion: The results showed that the teacher support of the basic psychological needs (BPN) predicted students' BPN satisfaction, which in turn predicted their autonomous motivation and positive emotions, and negatively predicted their negative emotions. Finally, autonomous motivation predicted students' intention to be physically active, whereas academic achievement was predicted by both autonomous motivation and emotions. This cross-sectional study looks into how students' perceived teacher support is linked to achievement emotions in mathematics via academic control and value. The data was gathered from 602 secondary students (13-16-year-olds) in 16 mathematics classrooms from three public schools in Jiangsu province, China. Participants were asked to respond to the paper-pencil questionnaire assessing students' perceived teacher support, cognitive appraisals, and achievement emotions in mathematics. Findings showed that cognitive appraisals played complete mediation roles in teacher support and achievement emotions. Intrinsic value and mathematics self-concept were shown to serve a positive role in teacher support and achievement emotions, whereas extrinsic value was found to play a negative one. Besides, teacher support showed the greatest indirect effect on achievement emotions through mathematics self-concept. Lastly, findings indicated the great relevance of teacher support to students' anger, boredom, enjoyment and relaxation in mathematics classrooms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this study, we examined reciprocal relations between students' achievement emotions (enjoyment, anxiety, and boredom) and learning strategies (deep-processing strategy and surface-processing strategy). Japanese elementary school students (N = 111; 5th and 6th grade students) twice completed self-report measures of achievement emotions and learning strategy use in mathematics and Japanese classes. Results of the cross-lagged panel model indicated that "enjoyment" positively predicted the use of deep-processing strategies and negatively predicted the use of surface-processing strategies. In addition, "anxiety" positively predicted the use of surface-processing strategies, and "boredom" negatively predicted the use of deep-processing strategies and positively predicted the use of surface-processing strategies in Japanese class. Results also indicated that the use of deep-processing strategies negatively predicted "boredom." In addition, the use of deep-processing strategies positively predicted "joy" and negatively predicted "anxiety" in Japanese class. These results suggest that emotions can be antecedents of students' learning strategies and that the development of emotion differs depending on strategy use. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: In the context of digital transformation of education, online training is one of the important ways for teachers to improve their professionalism and promote the quality of education. However, studies have shown that teachers' online training suffers from insufficient learning engagement and other problems, so it is crucial to explore the factors influencing teachers' learning engagement and their mechanisms of action in the context of online training. Methods: Taking 589 teachers who participated in online training as the research subjects, the study used the methods of survey research and statistical analysis to explore the influence mechanism of teachers' academic emotions and motivational beliefs on online learning engagement based on the dual perspectives of control value theory and expectancy-value theory. Results: The study found that: (1) positive-high arousal academic emotions, training self-efficacy, and training task value significantly and positively predicted online learning engagement, respectively; (2) negative-high arousal and negative-low arousal academic emotions significantly and negatively predicted online learning engagement; (3) training self-efficacy and training task value mediated the relationship between positive-high arousal academic emotions, negative-high arousal academic emotions, negative-low arousal academic emotions and online learning engagement, respectively. Discussion: The study concluded that by creating an immersive learning environment based on the educational meta universe, personalized and precise training based on big data and adaptive technologies, and establishing a multidimensional and three-dimensional online learning support service system, which can effectively improve teachers' online learning engagement and enhance their online training quality and effectiveness. Mathematics anxiety (MA) is an academic anxiety related to doing, learning and testing mathematics. MA can negatively affect mathematics performance, motivation and maths-heavy science and technology-related career choices. Previous data suggest that subjective perceptions and interpretations of students are key in the genesis of MA. Here, based on expectancy-value and control-value theory, we aimed to identify potential, theoretically based subjective factors probably key to understanding MA. We analysed data from 151 745 fifteen-year-old children from 65 ‘countries and economies' from the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2012 dataset. Subjective self-perceptions had a stronger relationship with MA than maths achievement. We found that higher MA was associated with lower perceived control over maths activities and lower subjective expectation of success. Surprisingly, children with higher subjective valuation of maths had higher MA for similar levels of subjective control and success expectancy in maths. Results offer an improved understanding of potential antecedents of MA and suggest that effective interventions could be based on gradual confidence building in maths. These could primarily draw on a deeper understanding of the subject improving subjective success expectancy and feeling of control over maths activities. Cultural variation in findings is discussed.

Despite the influence on student’s behaviors and the reciprocal associations between motivation and emotion, the number of studies addressing both constructs at the same level is very limited.MethodsA structural equation model was used with 799 students aged 11–17 years (M = 13.16; SD = 1.17).Results and discussionThe results showed that the teacher support of the basic psychological needs (BPN) predicted students’ BPN satisfaction, which in turn predicted their autonomous motivation and positive emotions, and negatively predicted their negative emotions. Finally, autonomous motivation predicted students’ intention to be physically active, whereas academic achievement was predicted by both autonomous motivation and emotions. We conclude that to better understand the consequences of PE classes, it is necessary to consider both constructs.

Are motivated students less likely to express negative achievement emotions in math, and how do teachers impact such academic beliefs? Guided by the situated expectancy-value theory and the control-value theory, this study is interested in how teacher support influences students' negative affect in math through students' perception of teacher support and students' interest value (teacher-to-student transmission between and within classes). Thus, associations were modeled at the individual and classroom levels to investigate cross-level interactions. Using data from 1,429 students in grades 7–12 (49% males, 67% Hispanic Americans, 15% Asian Americans, 18% other racial/ethnic groups), cross-level indirect effects suggested an association of teacher-reported support for collaboration and cognitive support with decreasing negative affect through students' perception of teacher support and students' interest value. Recent studies suggest that teachers' emotions can influence their teaching. Guided by a phenomenological orientation, we used a qualitative single-case study approach to investigate the interplay between a teacher's emotions and the enactment of her instructional goals. We looked at Lily's (pseudonym) assessments of the success and failure of employing epistemological messages for sixth-grade students' sense-making and construction of scientific explanations using microsociological and exploratory interpretations. The study is important because it shed light on the crucial roles that teachers' emotions play in the success of their decisions to use reform-based teaching practices. Formal and informal interviews, classroom video recordings, field notes, and observation data from the six-lesson unit on "Plant structures and functions" were all included in the analysis. We used the control-value theory of achievement emotion to repeatedly code the data in order to investigate how Lily appraised the success and failure of employing epistemological messages. Additionally, we used the four dimensions of sound scientific explanations—relevance, conceptual framework, causality, and appropriate level of representation—to deductively evaluate the productivity of her epistemological messages. Results showed two opposing emotions, "joy" and "irritation", resulting in productive and unproductive epistemological messages. When she felt "joy" as a consequence of a favourable assessment of her instructional goals and expectations based on student outcomes, her epistemological messages effectively conveyed the majority of the dimensions of good scientific explanations. These findings reveal the importance of teachers' emotions during the implementation of their intended reform-based teaching practices and offer implications for future studies. Control-value theory suggests that students' control and value appraisals mediate the relation between contextual supports and student emotions in formal learning settings; however, this theory has not been tested in informal learning contexts. Understanding mechanisms for instructional support in informal learning contexts can inform the design of effective instruction both in and out of school. In this study, we tested control-value theory by examining whether youths' momentary appraisals of control and value for activities mediate the relation between program quality indicators and state emotions in summer STEM programs focused on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics for middle- and high-school youth. Participants were 203 youth aged 10–16 years attending nine summer STEM programs in the US. Youth ranged in age from 10 to 16. Data were collected via the experience sampling method and video recordings. Trained coders reviewed video footage and coded for program quality. Structural equation modeling demonstrated that most program quality variables explored were not predictive of youths' appraisals of control and value, but state emotions varied based on program quality. Youth reported lower boredom when active participation and higher-order thinking were rated as high by trained observers. Youth also reported high excitement when activities involved high levels of higher-order thinking. High appraisals of control were associated with high levels of happiness and excitement and low levels of frustration, whereas high appraisals of value predicted high levels of frustration. Background: The effectiveness of peer learning has been recognized and discussed by many scholars, and implemented in the formal curriculums of medical schools internationally. However, there is a general dearth of studies in measuring the objective outcomes in learning. Methods: We investigated the objective effect of near-peer learning on tutee's emotions and its equivalence within the formal curriculum of a clinical reasoning Problem Based Learning session in a Japanese medical school. Fourth-year medical students were assigned to the group tutored by 6th-year students or by faculties. The positive activating emotion, positive deactivating emotion, negative activating emotion, negative deactivating emotion, Neutral emotion were measured using the Japanese version of the Medical Emotion Scale (J-MES), and self-efficacy scores were also assessed. We calculated the mean differences of these variables between the faculty and the peer tutor groups and were statistically analyzed the equivalence of these scores. The equivalence margin was defined as a score of 0.4 for J-MES and 10.0 for the self-efficacy score, respectively. Results: Of the 143 eligible participant students, 90 were allocated to the peer tutor group and 53 were allocated to the faculty group. There was no significant difference between the groups. The 95% confidence interval of the mean score difference for positive activating emotions (–0.22 to 0.15), positive deactivating emotions (–0.35 to 0.18), negative activating emotions (–0.20 to 0.22), negative deactivating emotions (–0.20 to 0.23), and self-efficacy (–6.83 to 5.04) were withing the predetermined equivalence margins for emotion scores, meaning that equivalence was confirmed for these variables. Conclusions: Emotional outcomes were equivalent between near-peer PBL sessions and faculty-led sessions. It explores the underarticulated differences between post-millennials and baby boomers sharing accounts of the lived experiences of learners and educators on either side of such divides shedding a light on generation gaps hoping to inform faculty development.Methods: Interpretative phenomenology was chosen to articulate “whatness” and extract meaningful understandings. Purposive sampling identified three teachers and three third-year students from an Indonesian medical school. Online semi-structured interviews were conducted and transcriptions analyzed using interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA). Emerging themes were connected and re-presented in the form of a metaphorical story to showcase the entirety of data while maintaining idiosyncratic focus.Findings: Themes from the teachers’ subset were changing characteristics of medical students, changing paradigms surrounding the role of a teacher, relationship with students, and relationship with other teachers. Themes from the students’ subset were hierarchical educational environment, relationship with teachers, and emotional response towards learning experiences. Themes were integrated into three existing theories, community of practice, self-concept, and control-value theory of achievement emotions. Findings revealed power dynamics between stakeholders in an unrecognized community of practice hence failing to shape the legitimacy of peripheral participation. Consequently, the rigidity of the hierarchical educational environment left little room for meaning construction and might hinder development of positive self-concept. Unawareness of students’ achievement emotions led to low perception of control and value, affecting their behavior and motivation towards learning.Conclusion: Medical educators could benefit from faculty development targeted to facilitate changing roles of teachers in facing the more recent generation of students. Achievement emotions have received increasing attention in research on adolescence and young adulthood, but little is known about these emotions in the early years of schooling. Studies addressing the development of different achievement emotions and their linkages with achievement during these years are largely lacking. The present longitudinal study aimed to fill this gap by examining the development of enjoyment, boredom, and anxiety in mathematics across second to fourth grade (N = 670 German students; Mage = 8.45 years, 51.0% female at baseline) as well as relations between these emotions and children's math achievement. Students' emotions during learning and when taking tests and exams in math, school grades in math, and math achievement test scores were measured in annual assessments. Latent structural equation modeling showed that enjoyment decreased, whereas boredom and anxiety remained relatively stable across these years. Moreover, the findings from reciprocal effects models (REMs) show that emotions and achievement were reciprocally linked over time, controlling for autoregressive effects, gender, and family socioeconomic status. Enjoyment positively predicted subsequent achievement, and achievement positively predicted subsequent enjoyment. Boredom and anxiety negatively predicted subsequent achievement, and achievement negatively predicted subsequent boredom and anxiety. The results were consistent across waves and achievement indicators and highlight the need to attend to students' achievement emotions during the early years of schooling. Directions for future research and implications for educational practice are discussed. Educational Impact and Implications Statement: This longitudinal study investigated how elementary school students' emotions toward math develop from Year 2 to 4 and how they relate to students' math performance. Anxiety and boredom remained at the same levels during this time, but enjoyment of math decreased. Emotions and math performance were linked over the years; enjoyment predicted improved performance, and anxiety and boredom predicted reduced performance, from one year to the next. High performance, in turn, predicted more enjoyment, and poor performance predicted anxiety and boredom. Thus, the findings suggest that providing students with opportunities for success will improve their emotions toward the subject, which will ultimately enhance their performance. In this study, we identified multidimensional profiles in students' math anxiety, math self-concept, and math interest using data from a large generalizable sample of 16,547 9th grade students in the United States who participated in the National Study of Learning Mindsets. We also analyzed the extent that students' profile memberships are associated with related measures such as prior mathematics achievement, academic stress, and challenge-seeking behavior. Five multidimensional profiles were identified: two profiles which demonstrated relatively high levels of interest and self-concept, along with low math anxiety, in line with the tenets of the control-value theory of academic emotions (C-VTAE); two profiles which demonstrated relatively low levels of interest and self-concept, and high levels of math anxiety (again in accordance with C-VTAE); and one profile, comprising more than 37% of the total sample, which demonstrated medium levels of interest, high levels of self-concept, and medium levels of anxiety. All five profiles varied significantly from one another in their association with the distal variables of challenge seeking behavior, prior mathematics achievement, and academic stress. This study contributes to the literature on math anxiety, self-concept, and interest by identifying and validating student profiles that mainly align with the control-value theory of academic emotions in a large, generalizable sample. Background: This study investigated the role of different test anxiety components (affective, cognitive, motivational and physiological) as mediators between control and performance as proposed by Pekrun's control‐value theory (CVT). While all components were assessed via self‐report, the physiological component was additionally assessed via electrodermal activity (EDA). Aims: We examined the relative impact of the self‐reported anxiety components and EDA in this mediating mechanism to identify the most relevant assessment(s) (i.e., self‐reported anxiety components and/or EDA) for predicting test performance. Sample: The study comprised 50 eighth graders. Methods: Data were collected during a mathematics test comprising six task blocks. State self‐reports of control and anxiety components along with test performance and other test emotions were collected block‐wise (i.e., repeated assessments within students). EDA was continuously recorded. Results: Consistent with CVT, intra‐individual mediation analysis with multiple mediators revealed that higher control predicted lower anxiety (i.e., all self‐reported components). Unexpectedly, higher control was associated with increased EDA. Follow‐up analyses taking other test emotions into account suggested this might reflect positive activation. Correlations between EDA and control and self‐reported anxiety components differed depending on which test emotion was dominant in each situation. Regarding test performance, only the cognitive component was a significant mediator and thus seems to play a pivotal role in the relationship between control and performance. Conclusions: Distinguishing between anxiety components and including unbiased physiological measures improve our understanding of the mechanisms behind the relationship between test anxiety and performance. Higher physiological arousal may be a sign of anxiety but can also be a sign of positive activation. When aiming to reduce negative effects of anxiety on performance, targeting the cognitive component seems crucial. Background: This study examined the relations between students' expectancies for success and a physiological component of test anxiety, salivary cortisol, during an authentic testing setting. Aims: The aim of the study was to better understand the connection between shifts in students' control appraisals and changes in the physiological component of test anxiety. Sample: The study comprised 45 undergraduate engineering majors in the United States. Methods: Survey data concerning students' expectancy for success and saliva samples were taken before, during and after the practice midterm examination prior to their actual in‐class examination. Results: Students' expectancy for success declined during the examination while cortisol levels declined from the beginning to middle of the examination and began to increase again as a function of time. Although students' initial levels of expectancy for success and cortisol were not correlated, there was a negative relation between change in cortisol and change in expectancy for success. Conclusions: Our study demonstrates a relation between salivary cortisol, a physiological component of test anxiety and students' expectancy for success in an authentic testing context. Most students saw a decrease in cortisol during the examination, suggesting anticipatory anxiety prior to the test and a return to homeostasis as the examination progressed. Some students, however, did not see a declination in cortisol, suggesting they may not have recovered from pre‐examination anxiety. The negative relation between change in cortisol and expectancy for success suggests that students who had the greatest decrease in expectancy for success saw the smallest recovery in cortisol. Tests in educational contexts often start with easy tasks, assuming that this fosters positive experiences—a sense of control, higher valuing of the test, and more positive and less negative emotions. Although intuitive and widespread, this assumption lacks an empirical basis and a theoretical framework. We conducted a field experiment and randomly assigned 208 students to an easy-to-difficult or a difficult-to-easy condition in a mathematics test. Perceived challenge was measured along with control appraisals, value appraisals, and emotions (enjoyment, pride, anxiety, anger, boredom). While students starting with easy tasks felt less challenged than students starting with difficult tasks in Part 1, no differences emerged regarding control and value appraisals and emotions. In Part 2, students who had started with easy tasks proceeded to difficult tasks and reported a higher level of challenge, less value and control, and less positive and more negative emotions than students who proceeded from difficult-to-easy tasks. Control and value appraisals mediated the differences between the two conditions, especially regarding positive emotions. These results cast doubt on the preference for easy-to-difficult over difficult-to-easy task orders, revealing their potential for causing adverse experiences at the end of the test (e.g., reflecting contrast effects). Background: Several attempts have been made to examine students' academic emotions (AEs) in Western contexts, but less is known about how students' self‐reported emotions vary over time. Aims: The study aimed to understand Chinese students' emotional responses to academic events and the impact of high‐stakes testing on their AEs in the first year with a repeated‐measures survey after the Semester 1 and Semester 2 mid‐term examinations. Samples: 351 first‐year university students completed both surveys in an elite Chinese university, where the top 10% of first‐year students were assigned to an honours programme. Methods: Self‐reported AEs survey responses were evaluated with confirmatory factor analysis. Invariance testing between honours and ordinary students and between semesters was used to examine between‐group differences across time. Results: A three‐factor model of AEs (i.e., admired, shame, and self‐loathing) was found in both semesters, with strong invariance between semesters. Mean scores between groups were equivalent and semester. However, self‐loathing had the lowest mean (mean = 2.50; between mostly disagree and slightly agree), admired was at moderately agree (mean = 4.00), and shame was strongest at just over moderately agree (mean = 4.20). Conclusions: This study reveals a three‐factor structure of AEs and the stability of these emotions among highly successful Chinese learners. Despite being elite students, this sample of Chinese learners felt shame and pride in response to mid‐term examinations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The study intended to describe profiles of three achievement emotions (enjoyment, boredom, anxiety), their associations with each other and with control-value appraisals within the framework of the control-value theory. A total of 2002 Chinese university EFL students from 11 universities in China participated in the questionnaire survey. Descriptive results show that participants perceived learning of English as being controllable to a certain extent, and attached considerable intrinsic and attainment values to learning English. Participants reported experiencing moderate levels of enjoyment and anxiety, and a low level of boredom. Pearson correlation results show that anxiety and boredom were moderately and negatively correlated with enjoyment, being at the same time moderately, positively related to each other. Control appraisal, intrinsic and attainment value appraisals combined in predicting the emotions under investigation, with these effects being strongest in the case of enjoyment. Intrinsic value appraisal played the largest role in predicting enjoyment and boredom. For anxiety, control appraisal showed the largest predictive effect. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Proofs as epistemic tools are central to mathematical practice, as they establish and provide explanations for the validity of mathematical statements. Considering the challenge that proof construction poses to learners of all ages, prior research has investigated its cognitive determinants, but the impact of affective-motivational experiences on proof construction has been insufficiently investigated. Emotions related to knowledge acquisition (i.e., epistemic emotions) are assumed to play a key role in epistemic processes. In this study we investigated how the performance of 80 mathematics undergraduate students in a geometric proof construction task relates to the epistemic emotions experienced during proof construction. Controlling for geometry knowledge, we included control and value appraisals as antecedents in our investigation of epistemic emotions, and attention and motivation as mediators of their effects on proof construction performance. The results indicate that positive as well as negative emotions are influenced by students' appraisals, also indicating an interaction of both appraisal dimensions. Primarily enjoyment and curiosity mediate the effects of these appraisals on attention and motivation. These two markers of the proof construction process, in turn, mediate the effects of enjoyment and boredom on proof construction performance. In this study we investigated systematically the role of epistemic emotions in geometric proof construction and we offer insights that complement the existing research on the cognitive determinants of proof performance. Students' attitudes can be influential in the emotions experienced in mathematics learning and achievement at school. Two important judgements, according to Control-Value Theory are degree of control a student has over, and the value attached to, learning activities or outcomes. Appraisals of control and value are believed to play a central role in the emotions experienced when learning, and subsequent achievement. Achievement, in turn, can strengthen or weaken control-value appraisals. In the present study we set out to examine the bidirectional relations between control-value appraisals and a key emotion experienced in the mathematics classroom, namely anxiety. In addition, we tested the proposition that control-value appraisals are indirectly linked to achievement, mediated by classroom-related anxiety. The participants were 1242 Year 5 students (49% female), with a mean of 9.3 years, from 24 English primary schools. Self-report data for anxiety, and control-value appraisals, were collected over two waves (separated by seven months) and mathematics achievement collected from a classroom test one week later. Results from a structural equation model showed bidirectional relations between higher anxiety and lower control. Although anxiety predicted lower value, value was unrelated to subsequent anxiety. Higher control at the first wave of measurement was related to higher mathematics achievement, mediated by lower anxiety, at the second wave. These results underscore the importance of reducing anxiety when learning mathematics and suggest that intervention could achieve this outcome by reducing anxiety directly or by strengthening control. Control–value theory (CVT) proposes that discrete emotions arise from combinations of control–value appraisals of learning activities and outcomes. Studies have supported this proposition using factor analytic and latent profile, analyses. Network analysis (NA), however, has not been widely used within the field of educational psychology or to investigate the propositions of CVT. In the present study we set out to examine how control–value appraisals related to three commonly experienced classroom emotions, enjoyment, boredom, and pride, using network analysis. In addition, we included positive and negative facets of value. The sample comprised 170 students (53.5% female) in their first year of secondary education who responded to survey items in a cross-sectional design. NA shows a two-dimensional graphical network of items (edges) and the relations between them (edges). In addition, statistical indices can be used to identify those nodes that show numerous or strong links to others or bridge clusters (communities) of nodes. The NA demonstrated that emotions and value (positive and negative) but not control cohered into distinct communities. Many, but not all, edges were in support of CVT; there were positive links between control/positive value and enjoyment and pride, and negative links for boredom, as well as negative links between negative value and enjoyment and pride, and positive links for boredom. Three control–value nodes were particularly influential: that lessons were important/valuable (positively) and that work required too much time (negatively). Interventions and classroom instructional strategies that build value/importance and reduce perceptions of time cost may be particularly effective in facilitating positive emotions and reducing negative emotions. Emotions experienced in educational settings link to students' motivation, engagement, learning, and achievement. Despite meaningful interconnections between emotions, motivation, and desired outcomes, a dearth of research on student emotions in physical education (PE) currently exists. The Control-Value Theory of Achievement Emotions (CVTAE) highlights the importance of emotions within students' achievement motivation and provides a comprehensive framework for investigating their antecedents and outcomes. The purpose of this investigation was to explore CVTAE as a potential framework to understand students' achievement emotions in PE. For a significant number of students, attitudes towards mathematics decrease notably during secondary education. Thus, there is an urgent need to improve students’ mathematics attitudes because attitudes may negatively affect conceptual understanding of mathematics or mathematics performance. However, without a clear unified construct of mathematics attitudes, the ambiguity surrounding this construct prevents researchers from drawing broad conclusions about how to improve students’ overall mathematics attitudes. Therefore, we conducted a systematic review of 95 studies focused on mathematics attitudes to clarify the construct and measurement of mathematics attitudes, and to provide a holistic picture of the relations between mathematics attitudes and math achievement. The review suggested the adoption of a multidimensional definition that regards mathematics attitudes as a combination of specific mathematical cognitions (value, gender roles/beliefs, confidence, self-concept), affects (enjoyment, anxiety), and behavioural intentions (i.e., willingness and tendency to spend more time learning mathematics subjects). The review then explored the relations between each subdimension of attitudes and mathematics performance. In general, anxiety and gender roles were negatively correlated with mathematics performance (r = -.27 to -.48; -.21) whereas enjoyment, self-concept, confidence, perceived value, and behavioural intentions were positively related to achievement (r = .27 to .68; .21 to .76; .34 to .42; .11 to .30; .21 to .34, respectively). Thus, mathematics attitudes appear to comprise three components with several subdimensions that each uniquely contribute to mathematics achievement. Going forward, researchers of mathematics attitudes should a) specify the components of mathematics attitudes used to guide their investigation b) adopt measures in line with their chosen components, and c) investigate how each subdimension of mathematics attitudes uniquely and cumulatively contribute to mathematics ability.

We present a three-dimensional taxonomy of achievement emotions that considers valence, arousal, and object focus as core features of these emotions. By distinguishing between positive and negative emotions (valence), activating and deactivating emotions (arousal), and activity emotions, prospective outcome emotions, and retrospective outcome emotions (object focus), the taxonomy has a 2 × 2 × 3 structure representing 12 groups of achievement emotions. In four studies across different countries (N = 330, 235, 323, and 269 participants in Canada, the United States, Germany, and the U.K., respectively), we investigated the empirical robustness of the taxonomy in educational (Studies 1–3) and work settings (Study 4). An expanded version of the Achievement Emotions Questionnaire was used to assess 12 key emotions representing the taxonomy. Consistently across the four studies, findings from multilevel facet analysis and structural equation modeling documented the importance of the three dimensions for explaining achievement emotions. In addition, based on hypotheses about relations with external variables, the findings show clear links of the emotions with important antecedents and outcomes. The Big Five personality traits, appraisals of control and value, and context perceptions were predictors of the emotions. The 12 emotions, in turn, were related to participants' use of strategies, cognitive performance, and self-reported health problems. Taken together, the findings provide robust evidence for the unique positions of different achievement emotions in the proposed taxonomy, as well as unique patterns of relations with external variables. Based on the control-value theory, the present study examined the development and change of enjoyment and effort among adolescents during a school year. The study analyzed 754 adolescent students (M Age = 13.56; SD = 1.2; 49.7% female) who twice participated in a 1-week intervention of self-directed learning (SDL). The results of the bivariate latent neighbor change model showed that—contrary to previous study results—a positive development of enjoyment and effort was generally recorded over the school year and that particularly the two 1-week self-directed learning interventions were beneficial for this increase. Furthermore, the results show that enjoyment and effort were reciprocally linked over time, but only when self-directed learning was experienced first. In other words, by enlarging instruction via self-directed learning intervals, it is possible to counteract the tendency of enjoyment and effort to exhibit a downward spiral. BackgroundSecond/foreign language teaching has been considered as a dialogic and interactive job in which teachers’ and students’ emotions and behaviors are closely connected to each other. When there is a harmonious and positive relationship between the teacher and students in the classroom, many favorable academic outcomes may emerge. A bulk of research has endorsed the power of positive emotional classroom rapport in EFL contexts. However, its role in preventing negative students’ emotions like shame, as an achievement emotion, in terms of perceived control and value tasks has rarely (if any) caught scholarly attention.ObjectiveThis study aimed to provide insights into the role of emotions in L2 education and the way students’ shame can be prevented or curbed in light of a positive emotional classroom rapport.Method/DesignThis article systematically reviewed the theoretical and empirical underpinnings of EFL teachers’ positive emotional classroom rapport and students’ shame in light of the control-value theory.ResultsIn this research, it was asserted that by building a positive emotional classroom rapport EFL teachers can block and even eliminate students’ shame.ImplicationsThe study offers practical implications to EFL teachers, trainers, principals, and researchers by increasing their knowledge and abilities in managing psycho-emotional mechanisms and factors and enriching interpersonal aspects of EFL education.
