The principles of water sustainability are not exclusive to one civilization without the other this make led the research problem to emerge as a question: "What is the methodology of water sustainability in Islamic architecture and how it can be used as a guide-line for achieving water sustainability in contemporary architecture?”. To answer this question the research in its theoretical study demonstrated three points, begun with presenting the functions of water in Islamic architecture, then it explained how Islamic architecture depended on water as a design tool in the process of place making, and it ended with determining the principles and criteria of water sustainability in Islamic architecture. The research determined the methodology of achieving water sustainability in Islamic architecture. Depending on this methodology the research analyzed two case study projects: Alhambra palace in Spain and Al-Ghuri Sabil in Egypt, and then the research applied this methodology in one of contemporary housing projects in Egypt, and this led the research to emphasize its main hypothesis which state “the principles and criteria of water sustainability which preexists in Islamic architecture can be used as a guide-line for achieving water sustainability in contemporary architecture”.

- Abstract
The use of stone as a building material or ornamental element has a long tradition favoured by several factors such as the availability and ease of quarrying the material in places not far from the city. Until the beginning of the 20th century, stone was the builders’preferred material. During the first half of the 20th century, this supremacy began to wane due to the complex cultural, social, and material transformations that affected architecture. The outcome of these transformations was almost always associated with the rise of the structural frame and modern materials such as steel, concrete, and glass. Today, cladding is the field in which stone materials are most widely used, with the development of new techniques for on-site application, capable to give the stone facing characteristics and opportunities for use that were unattainable before. New extraction and production technologies also allow the use of stone materials that were once difficult to use. Among these, in contemporary Italian architecture, a stone, the Manciano sandstone, marketed under the name of Pietra Dorata
® , Pietra Dorata Toscana and Pietra di Santafiora is having great success. The purpose of this work is to examine, in relation to conservation aspects, the use of this sandstone in the city of Florence, where other sandstones have historically been used both in historic buildings and in claddings and ornamental works. Indeed, there are numerous examples of new constructions in Florence that have used Manciano sandstone as a cladding material over the last thirty years or so. Even for a relatively short period of exposure to atmospheric agents, decay phenomena can be observed that are essentially due to the type of installation or to other anthropic factors. India has a rich cultural diversity, and often faces challenges in the preservation of these cultural traits manifested in traditional architectural values. In fact, it has undergone tremendous changes in its buildings over the years due to modernization which has impacted its architectural landscape. In this context, there is a need for a dynamic response to balance the traditions with innovations and modernity. The call for an architectural style that would minimize environmental impact while honoring local traditions require the development of new concepts. Such concepts also need to meet structural stability requirements and incorporate technological interventions. In fact, these give rise to a style often known as Neo-Vernacular architecture. This paper explores the integration of Neo-Vernacular elements and their role in the traditional Indian temples and how they affect the multifaceted functions. The research employs a qualitative descriptive method. It focuses on case studies of three temples from different regions to explore the characteristics and principles of Neo-Vernacular architecture. Data was collected through site visits to these three Temples: Lotus Temple in New Delhi, the Temple of Shiva in Barmer, Rajasthan and Nandyal Balaji Temple in Andhra Pradesh. It also derives data from literature to support these findings. It concludes that the adaption of Neo Vernacular architecture in modern Indian temples marks a crucial juncture where tradition intersects with innovation to transform the built environment. It is argued that this architectural style is significant in preserving cultural heritage while meeting the changing needs of the society. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Today, human activities are the leading cause of severe environmental damages, especially regarding shortage and instability of natural resources. The sustainability concept was developed in response, to limit these risks and facilitate living conditions for future generations. Life and nature have historically been considered as inspiring in architecture among others, prompting an environmental-oriented sense of direction towards resolving present-day issues. Despite the proliferation of nature-inspired sciences, hardly any attention is paid to classifications and interconnections between these sciences regardless of benefits associated with such studies. However, the availability of such a classification and its use in present-day architecture can significantly contribute to the advancement of environmental sustainability. The current research has identified and presented a comprehensive framework of sciences inspired by life and nature (bio) and their relationship. The research method is qualitative-descriptive and focuses on articles containing the word ‘bio’, published in Springer publishers between 2020 and 2022. The review of the 1927 articles have led to a classification of biological studies into 11 groups (bionic, biomimetic, biomorphic, biofuel (biodiesel, bioalcohol, bioethanol, biohydrogen, and biogas), biomaterial, biohybrid, bioaerosol, biotechnology, bioalgorithm (biodesign intelligence and biomaterial intelligence), bioart (bio-inspired design and biodecoration), biophilia (biophilic design) and the relationship between them environmental sustainability. The outcome is a development of the theoretical knowledge about bio-inspired sciences and indicates that international bioscience studies mainly focus on biofuels and biotechnology, along the lines of reducing human activities’ impact on the environment, efficient use of natural resources, protect biodiversity, and a harmonious relationship between humans and the natural environment. 8In the last few decades, contemporary mosque architecture in Indonesia has separated itself from mosques' traditional language and symbols. Contemporary mosques tend to produce experiences of space and articulation of unprecedented mosques. However, the novelty is inseparable from an understanding of the regional context. This study examines the presence of critical regionalism in Indonesia's contemporary mosque design phenomenon. This study uses six samples to assess how the application of critical regionalism is present in contemporary mosques in Indonesia. This thinking has become an attitude associated with the abstraction of Islamic symbols within creativity in creating places. The use of local materials is the primary articulation in the application of critical regionalism. Thus, in this articulation, a spatial and aesthetic experience is formed that is not sentimental towards history, processing local materials in the context of modern construction, responding to local and climatic conditions and becoming an emphasis on tactile. Purpose: The aim of the study is to determine the role of multimedia technologies used in architecture for socially significant communication. It is important to answer the following question: Can the content and graphic shapes included in the façade be used to shape public awareness and create social identity? One of the objectives is to examine the marketing potential of a message included in an image on a façade, and the possibilities of using it in building a region’s brand. Design/methodology/approach: The examination included 15 buildings in which various multimedia technologies were used with the intention to create a message. Among the solutions applied in these objects are those in which the message is composed directly, by a metaphor, or indirectly in combination with the architectural features. The research material was analysed, and groups of useful subjects were selected for further investigation: - Promotion of a town. - Accentuating the location. - Accentuating the importance of events. - Popularisation of art. - Façade as a display and information channel. Findings: groups of subjects were selected, which might be used in creating social integration and regional marketing. Research limitations/implications: The below research is of preliminary character. In next steps, other aspects could be added, e.g. multimedia technologies, or seeking means of expression, methods of building images. Practical implications: The article presents the possibilities that multimedia systems offer in the area of message creation. It could potentially give direction to decision-makers with regard to their marketing activities, or the efforts to accentuate certain public functions of a town or region. The results of this research may interest investors, architects, and artists. The anticipated effect is that both awareness and the frequency of using multimedia systems will grow. Social implications: The article discusses the questions of the social role of art and façade graphics in architecture. It examines the effects of a message contained in an image on the issues of social identity and developing bonds. Originality/value: The study proves that façade graphics have a substantial impact, and it shows the possibilities of using such graphics in regional marketing; it also mentions their form, scope, and means. The trade sector is among the top four growing sectors contributing to Bahrain’s GDP. Despite the successful impact of trade on the local economy, there is an apparent disconnect between individuals engaged in trading activities and their physical urban spaces, posing a significant threat to preserving Bahrain’s vibrant social trading culture. The research hypothesis is that effective urban design can significantly improve trading activities in the old city of Manama. Consequently, the research aims to define the role of physical urban design in influencing trade, outline the social impacts of urbanization on traditional and contemporary trading environments, and identify urban principles that affect the physical act of trade. The methodology follows a theoretical study that considers the history of urbanization and its contemporary theories, the impacts of urbanization, and the trading development impacts of urbanization on trading environments in Bahrain. An analytical study is then adopted to analyse the problem, using the “fishbone diagram”, questionnaires and photographic analysis of the area. The findings highlight the importance of utilizing outdoor space, diverse building typologies, organic circulation routes, spatial layout, interior design, landscaping, adaptable design, interaction spaces and intimate spaces within the design of traditional and contemporary trading environments. The research concludes with recommendations to sustainably revive the trading streets in Bahrain. The results provide valuable insights for stakeholders, such as Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities, and those working in architecture, urban and interior design, to reignite informal social trading experiences from the past.

The present research studies the relationship between place attachment and the perception of form's visual quality in fifteen outstanding contemporary Iranian architectural cultural buildings. This study puts forward the hypothesis that there is a correlation between the quality of building form and the sense of place attachment, in the sense that creating high visual quality through enhancing the quality of building form increases citizens' initial satisfaction with and subsequent attachment to the building. High visual quality influences people's experience of the environment and improves the quality of life. Place attachment highlights how people, on a personal level, recreate a sense of place for themselves. The present study adopts the descriptive-analytical method as its theoretical framework and the survey as the empirical methodology. Questionnaires were developed using the Likert scale and distributed among experts and ordinary citizens. Data analysis using SPSS and the adoption of descriptive-analytical statistics, correlation analysis, and regression showed the relationship among the characteristics of indicators. The results show a positive correlation between form and place attachment mediated through visual quality, and they are causal conditions for one another. In addition, only some of the buildings under study evoke the same level of place attachment.

The architecture of the 20th century has been largely affected by changes in the field of technology. In particular, the evolution of digital representation has led to new visions of contemporary architectural space. Expressive freedoms, which in the pre-digital era stemmed from visionary approaches, now become feasible thanks to modern modelling technologies. They determine a mutation of working processes and creative elaboration, proving to be more than just a mechanical tool without theoretical-speculative implications. Transformation of reality into updatable and modifiable data flows leads towards a new weltanschauung, characterised by the modern paradigms of precariousness and flexibility. Digital world, based on processing of algorithms and information, becomes a link between art and mathematics. The theoretical universe based on the fourth dimension and non-Euclidean geometries, which had produced interesting artistic effects in the avant-garde movements of the 20th century, now finds a means of expression in the field of architecture. The paper explores implications that digital technologies have had on mutations of contemporary architecture: from the fluid and deconstructed shapes linked to multidimensional experiments to the most recent experiences, placed at the border between art and architecture, that are experimenting with the transfer of digital language into the real world.

The concept of user-centered design has recently been accepted in contemporary design teachings and has created new perspectives in the design field. This article aims to evaluate the contemporary mosques built in Türkiye from a user-centered perspective. In this context, first of all, the concept of user-centered design was included and the necessity of a pluralistic environment in decisionmaking processes was emphasized in order to create an ideal publicity phenomenon. In the context of the conceptual framework created, contemporary mosque examples built in the 21st century were selected and presented to the preference of architect and non-architect participant groups. Decision criteria that are thought to affect the choice of participants are aesthetic value, material and workmanship, dimensions of the building, religious symbols in the building, and the brand value of the building. These factors, which may be effective in the choice of contemporary mosques, were evaluated with the Analytic Hierarchy Process method. Accordingly, it was observed that the main criteria constituting the contemporary mosque preferences of the architect group were aesthetics, the brand value of the building, material, and workmanship criteria. On the other hand, the main criterion constituting the contemporary mosque preferences of the non-architect group was the presence of religious symbols. Accordingly, it was observed that architectural profession ideologies affected and differentiated the reasons for preference. As a result, it was concluded that the ideology of the architectural profession is effective in the construction process of the contemporary built environment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study addresses the impact of digital technologies on contemporary architecture, highlighting how sensors, virtual reality, augmented reality and sensitive facades have transformed sensory interaction in built space. The main objective is to analyse how these technologies go beyond their practical function, generating spaces that stimulate the senses and integrate with the environment. A taxonomy is used to classify four disruptive experimental architectural projects from the early 21st century, demonstrating how digital technologies have evolved from a static view to a more complex perspective. The study argues that digital systems have become a new design material, expanding creativity and highlighting the importance of sensory and emotional experience in the design process. Preliminary findings suggest that technology plays a crucial role in the creation of meaningful architectural spaces. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Since the Middle Ages, Santiago de Compostela has been home to one of the most famous pilgrimage destinations in Europe. Throughout its history, its success as a pilgrimage site has most often been signaled by large-scale building projects. This essay addresses how Peter Eisenman's Cidade da Cultura de Galicia (CCG), an architectural complex and cultural center overlooking Santiago de Compostela, mediates and responds to contemporary efforts toward the production and revitalization of the pilgrim experience within the city. While not as obvious as the interventions that occur along the route, the CCG is in fact a materialization of the goals of the revitalization initiative, a vision of secularized touristic pilgrimage for the twenty-first century, which is enacted through Compostela's successful image economy. The twentiethcentury revitalization efforts are peculiar for the distinctive nature of their engagement with a medieval past, and the strong connections drawn between modern pilgrimage and its medieval counterpart. This article is concerned with the material evidence of competing interests in the revitalization process and specifically with how they relate to institutional interventions initiated by the regional government. The regional government's interests were often pursued in monumental form: in the late twentieth century, the Xunta operationalized a comprehensive cultural policy that was principally enacted in architecture. Examining the CCG's own past, as well as the medieval narrative of Compostela's history that it materializes, offers a new framework for understanding the role of built space in--and its relation to--the politics of pilgrimage revitalization within the twenty-first-century context. Recent decades, have witnessed an emergence in the alternative use of ceramic materials in architectures designed with phenomenological sensitivity. This has implied rethinking materials and form, and an understanding of place that considers climate actively. This article analyses climate-conscious ways of using brick or other ceramic materials as enclosures that overwrite traditional applications and construction systems. These materials are transformed into skins and filters that provide protection from the sun while allowing natural ventilation and light. Applications employing the most advanced technology follow a computational logic characterised by digital disruption.

This Research Note investigates The Collection (2016), a residential development in Kakaʻako, Hawaiʻi. The Collection is part of Our Kakaʻako, an urban revitalization project on land administered by the Kamehameha Schools. The Collection initiates critical conversations about the fraught relationship between contemporary architecture, urban planning, and Kanaka Maoli (Native Hawaiian) futures in the settler state of Hawai‘i. While The Collection is steeped in neoliberal and capitalist discourses, its monumental presence also enables an interrogation of future possibilities of Honolulu as a just urban society—a place where everyone has a home and Kānaka Maoli can maintain and restore relationships informed by the ʻāina (land; that which feeds).

30. Philosophy and religious architecture. The memory of the catholic worship building

This reflective work arises from the conviction that the fundamental object of the ecclesiastical building of Catholic worship goes further beyond the limits of serving as support for the liturgical program. From the common ground of the profane, its essential task lies in the sensible concretion of a fundamental ‘vision’ of existence (God–I–world). Based on the philosophical trends that characterize the interaction of the immanent and the transcendent, this work is intended to enrich the most opportune paths of thought and action for the effective resolution of the religious program, contemplating its anchorage in the secular world without retracting its ‘sacred’ character. To this end, after inquiring into the primitive nature of these enclosures and their resignification over the past century −attending in parallel to metaphysical and epistemological transformations of contemporary culture− their current production will be explored through five small chapels, granting special interest to their aesthetic and symbolic qualification. This journey will enable the construction of a particular frame for the general outlook of this architecture to identify new modes of representation of the sacred in which the ‘architectural materiality’ prevails as a resource for updating the cultic memory.

In recent years, a slow change towards prefabrication has been observed in the construction sector. An increasing amount of construction work is done off site. The benefits of such arrangements are noted, as it results in the construction of better-quality buildings and can lead to lowering a project’s overall carbon footprint. These changes concern every stage of construction and nearly every material solution, including external walls made from concrete panels. The objective of this study was to develop and present a classification of concrete prefabricated elements in terms of their structural properties and to determine which of these elements are most often used in the design of housing. The study found that structural sandwich elements and cladding panels were among the most popular technologies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In contemporary times, the imperative to address ethical considerations within the realm of architecture has escalated, primarily in response to the prevalent environmental challenges. Environmental ethics, a facet of applied ethics, delves into the intricate interplay between nature and the exigencies arising from indiscriminate human interventions in the environment. The present research employs a descriptive-analytical approach to discern indicators of environmental ethics methodologies, drawing insights from the Hannover Principles and pertinent case studies. Within the purview of this study, the qualitative content analysis method is employed to scrutinize the conceptual framework of these principles and their ramifications on residential complexes. To identify pivotal indicators and criteria catering to residential needs, the Expert questionnaire and AHP method are applied. The accrual of research data is facilitated through a researcher-developed questionnaire, subsequently subjected to analysis utilizing SPSS statistical software. The analytical approach involves correlation coefficient analysis and a one-sample t-test. In alignment with the Hannover Principles, environmental ethics indicators are systematically classified into three distinct categories: principles pertaining to human aspects, those linked to nature, and principles concerning productivity. This study aims to investigate the role of these principles as evaluative criteria in the design of contemporary residential complexes. The central research question guiding this inquiry is articulated as follows: To what extent have environmental ethics principles been integrated into the design paradigms of modern residential complexes? The empirical findings underscore the imperative of infusing environmental ethical standards into the fabric of sustainable building creation. Notably, principles related to human aspects emerge as particularly consequential, garnering the highest score among all the considered criteria for Residential Complexes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Nicosia Walled City, on the northern side of Cyprus, encapsulates historical imprints from various cultures and civilizations within its layered structure, despite being a divided city since 1974. Based on this beautiful Medieval sequence, this study investigates the implications of architectural design approaches aimed at incorporating contemporary architecture into this heterogeneous historic city to conserve its historical identity. While the threats facing this diverse built heritage composition are various, the changes brought about by design outcomes and development actions can be challenging. This is especially so when designers are obligated to adhere to conservation principles that clash with the city's character and that resort to design strategies that prohibit the addition of new layers. This study employed a mix of qualitative and quantitative research methods and examined three case studies based on buildings that were erected during the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus period, spanning from 1983 to when the crossing began in 2003. This study's conclusions revealed that the design schemes negatively impacted the city's historical identity layers because the designers followed selective conservation principles that entirely concentrated on nostalgia rather than typological values. Rather than creating new layers, preferences energized this problem, and the designers' attitudes towards the place's heterogeneous character maintained the same context uniformity patterns. Efforts to add sequences of layers reflecting the identity of the present time and its perceptions were thwarted. These reductions in the historical layers, the subsequent transformations, and the current social–cultural necessities should stimulate individual determination and practical policy instruments. The tools proposed here will accommodate inclusive ideas that encourage fresh dialogues with the past, thus keeping the city's identity significant for the future. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The imperative of today's architects and urban planners is to identify and implement sustainable solutions that would increase the overall quality of the urban environment and people's well-being, by maintaining a natural balance and integrity. In this regard, the bioclimatic principles of vernacular architecture can serve as inspiration for designing buildings in a contemporary urban context. This approach can help to gain knowledge about the practices of vernacular architecture, and define solutions that can deal with today's urban challenges, such as urban and environmental pollution, lack of comfort, and low quality of life. This paper presents the analysis of bioclimatic features of three well-preserved vernacular residential buildings, located in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. The research methodology is based on the literature research, photo documentation, and field observation, regarding the presence of bioclimatic design principles, such as building form, orientation, layout, use of local building materials, topography, traditional passive strategies - sun shading, cooling and natural-induced ventilation, natural landscape, and comfortable living environment. The results of this research showed that the selected vernacular buildings fulfill most of the basic bioclimatic principles, which could be transposed into contemporary architecture, not in the context of a pure replication of an old style, but as a modern sustainable architectural design. The analysis also showed that the potentials of passive heating were not exploited in the best possible way, therefore the improvement of the building design will be a necessary step in order to be implemented in the design of sustainable architecture. The article investigates the interaction between the memory phenomenon and avant-garde architecture by reviewing international and Soviet examples of how memory worked in the 1920-30s architecture, reminiscences of the avant-garde in the 20th-21st century architecture, and the latest inclusions of modernist and avant-garde architecture in current memory. Today, the avant-garde architecture occupies a place in the history of architecture not simply as a practice of denying the past and pursuing innovation, but as an era of fascination with great ideas based on a strong cultural foundation that made it possible to dream of the future. The avant-garde era played a great role in the formation of the entire architecture of the Modern Movement, and definition of the values and paradigms of modernity. The contemporary architectural avant-garde of the 21st century, for which one of the main tasks is the reception and translation of memory, serves as an embodiment of search for harmonious interaction between the past and the present. Examples are considered and conclusions are drawn about the nature of the interaction between avant-garde architecture and the phenomenon of memory.

One of the design challenges that architects and designers encounter during the creation and design stage of structural concepts is the parametric optimization of an architectural object's form. It is a very time-consuming and difficult process to evaluate a building's energy performance as a design consideration in the early design stages. To solve performance-related design issues, a number of tools and techniques have been created during the past few decades, primarily employing multi-objective optimization algorithms. The ability to dynamically control geometry and components using parametric modeling enables the designer to simultaneously evaluate several alternatives. The system research in the fields of architecture and urban planning aims to provide the energy efficiency of a design while enhancing its performance features. Theorists' perspectives have recently overlapped and diverged over how to strike a balance between technological capabilities and environmental factors in order to create an objective architecture in terms of performance that is unconcerned with form without content. All of these factors combined to create a modern architecture that is conceptually distinct from earlier tendencies seen before the advent of digital technology. In this paper, the relationship between the parametric architecture and environmental friendliness on building design has been explored. In order to analyze the theoretical study data, this research paper aims to elucidate the key elements of parametric architecture. This paper also reviews the utilization of cutting-edge implementation techniques, contemporary building materials and digital design approaches resulted from the parametric design in the growth of architectural philosophy.

Ranko Radović (1935-2005) was a prominent Serbian, Montenegrin and Yugoslavian architect, urban planner and designer, professor and architecture historian and theorist. This paper explores the architectural concepts and urban characteristics of the craft and service centers he designed, which were built in Belgrade (1968-1972), Šabac (1982) and Ljig (1988), as well as his architectural-urban planning research proposal for the reconstruction and revitalization of the old market and the area under the bastion of the fortress in Novi Pazar (1986-1987). In addition to his notable designs for the Sutjeska Battle Memorial House (Bosnia and Herzegovina), the town hall in Aranđelovac, the Partizanka hotel, a post office and a bank in Vrnjačka Banja, and the reconstruction of the Atelje 212 theater in Belgrade (Serbia), Radović's solutions for craft and service centers in Belgrade, Šabac and Ljig represent specific considerations of architecture and urbanity, in which the experiences of modernism, critical regionalism, and the influences of postmodernism are sublimated. He also produced a proposal, partly implemented, for the protection and revitalization of the old bazaar market in Novi Pazar, with a grouping of low-rise buildings for craft and service purposes and prefabricated-temporary structures based on the traditional scale. As a contribution to the study of Ranko Radović's work, these specific micro-urban structures are analyzed in the context of his theoretical views on contemporary architecture, urbanism and tradition, and the aim of the work is to illuminate and document Radović's contribution to the ideas of the development of modern architecture and cities in Serbia. Due to the architectural concepts and urbanistic values of craft-service centers expressed in the ideas of ephemerality and changeability, the paper provides an analytical overview and photo-documentation of their existing state, and the possibilities of their revitalization are discussed.

Abstract Spatial quality is one of the features of Iranian anatomical architecture, which, like the legacy of past architects, has been passed down from generation to generation and has been advanced and expanded in the architecture of each era consistent with its needs. This sequence of alteration from the late Qajar period to the beginning of the Islamic Republic has a different procedure that can be discussed according to the other changes in this period of adjustment. Via the interpretive method, processing design documents and field observations of well-known buildings in the Pahlavi area have been processed and, after initial estimation, the hypothesis in selected samples is tested to identify volume processing solutions. In the physical volume processing literature, empty space does not act as a mass in the volume and mass design stages, like the courtyards of traditional houses. In the process of physical space, residential buildings evolve from a continuous space to spots in plan, changes, and porosity in the facade, and finally, the total volume due to the structural systems and the boldness of the architects enter. Spatial quality is one of the features of Iranian anatomical architecture, which, like the legacy of past architects, has been passed down from generation to generation and has been advanced and expanded in the architecture of each era consistent with its needs. This sequence of alteration in the late Qajar period to the beginning of the Islamic Republic has a different procedure that can be discussed according to the other changes in this period of adjustment. This issue is significant when the architects of this era, due to politics, cultural nature, and educational practice, tried to develop creativity by modeling imported architecture and did not hide such an issue. However, compared to the previous era, life experiences in the previous space caused a secret connection in this period. This study aims to understand how sufficient empty space is present in the quality of contemporary housing and residential buildings in Tehran and what changes have been made in the design system from the late Qajar period to the beginning of the Islamic Republic. In this regard, via the interpretive method, processing design documents and field observations of well-known buildings in the Pahlavi area were examined and, after initial estimation, the hypothesis in selected samples was tested to identify volume processing solutions.

The tendency to identify and achieve identity in architecture is a significant trend in contemporary architecture. The trend of contemporary architectural projects occurred during the 1980s by the architects in Saudi Arabia. During that period, the Saudi institutes drove the transition from traditional to contemporary architecture to express their conservative view and the importance of the local cultural identities in architecture. This study aims to examine this experiment led by the Saudi government to understand how the architects could express their concept of regional identity in their work was expressed. The research examines five components shaping the architectural identity in two aspects. First is the concept of identity in the architects' work and how it was expressed. The second is how the public sees and understands the design product of the architects. According to the theoretical research framework, contemporary architectural works can be understood through five main areas: design concept, shape and form, construction technology, the materials used, and relationship with the surrounding. The case study approach was chosen as a viable tool for gathering the qualitative and quantitative data necessary for this study. Furthermore, the researcher chooses stadiums as a type of building because they challenge the designer to deliver cultural identities in architectural works. Therefore, King Fahd International Stadium (KFIS) in Riyadh and King Abdullah Sports City Stadium (KASCS) in Jeddah were chosen as case studies for this research. These two projects are similar and separated by more than two decades and will be analyzed according to the main parameters. In addition, the degree of correlation between the two groups’ opinions (the designer’s opinion and the experts’ perception of the design) will be elaborated. KFIS is found to be better in architectural identity based on these five different aspects. Various architects are successful in creating structures while integrating modern and local architecture. The traditional materials make it easy to adapt to the region's climatic conditions. In addition, the study recommends that emphasizing harmony with context and environment will increase their success in achieving identity-oriented and context-oriented work.
