The study explores the relationship between chronic exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5), sourced from wood smoke, and the histological structure and endocrine function of the uterus in nulliparous adult rats. It assesses potential structural changes in the uterus that could impact reproductive health, viewing PM2.5 exposure as a possible risk factor. A controlled experiment was conducted in a city known for high air pollution levels, exposing rats to filtered and unfiltered air conditions, thus mimicking human PM2.5 exposure. Histological findings indicated a significant increase in collagen density and uterine wall thickness in PM2.5 exposed subjects, suggesting a reproductive function risk. However, no significant differences were observed in progesterone and estradiol hormone levels, pointing to the complex relationship between PM2.5 exposure and its endocrine impact, and emphasizing the need for further studies for a deeper understanding. This work highlights the importance of thoroughly investigating the long-term effects of PM2.5 pollution on reproductive health, underlining the significance of considering environmental exposure as a critical factor in reproductive health research.

During the last decades in Puno, Peru, the problem of contamination has worsened due to the combined action of the disorderly growth of the urban population, poor management of solid waste, discharge of untreated sewage into the bay of Lake Titicaca and practices of inadequate sanitation and hygiene, severely affecting the environment and human health. The objective of the study was to characterize the pro-environmental attitudes and behaviors of the city's population of Puno in relation to sanitation, pollution and environmental management. The research is nonexperimental, quantitative, cross-sectional, descriptive, correlational and micro level of analysis. The universe of study was the population over 18 years of age in the urban area, which comprises 97,264 inhabitants; the sample, determined at simple random, was 382 people. A structured questionnaire was applied. Descriptive and inferential analysis and hypothesis testing were performed with SPSS statistical software. The results indicate that the environmental attitudes of the majority of the population are positive regarding factors and sources of pollution and effects on human health. On the contrary, environmental practices are inadequate in environmental management in the home and health and hygiene conditions in the home. It is concluded that the sustainable improvement of pro-environmental attitudes and behaviors demands a new public policy of environmental education, whose implementation incorporates the effective participation of civil society based on an incentive system. ENVIRONMENTAL management , *WASTE management , *POLLUTION management , *POLLUTION ,ENVIRONMENTAL protection planning - Abstract
The objective is to analyze the relationship between municipal waste management and environmental pollution. The research work made an interpretative analysis in the search for information, the number of articles included in the assessment for this research work is 15 scientific articles. The search for these research was made in the scientific databases: Scopus, Web of Science, Scielo, EBSCO Host and Google Scholar. The relationship between solid waste management and environmental pollution is based on the degree of impact resulting from the omission of an environmental management plan. Depending on the focus of the plan, there are better results in mitigating and controlling pollution; on the other hand, if there is no good monitoring, pollution will continue to increase. The mineralogy, grain size and associated facies in bottom sediments of three reservoirs Riogrande II, La Fe and Porce II, differentiate three episodes related to the evolution of sedimentary environments, being located silty deposits (average episode) contact between clayey lacustrine facies (bottom episode) and sandy alluvial distal border (upper episode). In these reservoirs averages microcomponents data indicate the predominance three miacrofacies, inorganic, organic and organomineral. The combined analysis of the composition with the physical structure supports sediment sedimentary distinguish different areas reflect a process unselective sedimentation along the reservoir and cause certain spatial heterogeneity of this. In all cases the proportions were higher for the sands, silts and then to finally, for clays. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

GOVERNMENT policy , *HUMAN rights , *SOCIAL facts , *PRIVATE companies , *HUMAN ecology - Abstract
This text analyses the socio-environmental conflict in the village of Pirgua. At the same time, the research defines the causes that give rise to it, and proposes a public policy that allows establishing a model for how to take on the great social and environmental challenges. The analysis of the research is given by the characterisation of a social phenomenon (conflict) by means of the three-stage methodological model; analysis of the conflict, legitimacy of action and the actors within the conflict and, finally, the conflict within a central conflict (Fontaine, 2004). The investigation found that there exists a concentration of negative environmental burdens that are generating opposing relationships between the community that inhabits the village versus the institutions and private companies that manage the burdens. This tension is mainly caused by inadequate territorial planning and ignorance of the approaches that recognise human rights within the notion of development. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The study of water quality is important over time because it is an essential element for human beings, it has been vital for their survival, territorial expansion, and socioeconomic development. The water of the Monjas river present contamination issues, mainly due to human activities such as agriculture, animal husbandry, and gray water discharges that alter their chemical, biological, and physical properties. The purpose of this research is to evaluate whether the water conditions are suitable for agricultural use, applying the Water Quality Index (WQI) methodology, which requires a study in the laboratory for fecal coliforms, dissolved oxygen, pH, biological demand for oxygen, nitrates, phosphates, dissolved solids, turbidity, and temperature. Samples were taken at six sampling points along the riverbed. Results were compared with the parameters described by TULSMA (Texto Unificado de la Legislación Secundaria de Ministerio de Ambiente), and FAO (The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations) environmental regulations. Higher values were obtained for fecal coliforms, and biochemical oxygen demand that exceeded the maximum permissible limits with respect to the rest of the parameters examined. In this study, the WQI ranged from 26 to 50, classifying the water quality of the Monjas river as unsuitable. It implies that it is not appropriate for agricultural use due to the contamination that it could cause to the crops. The main reasons for this could rely on the presence of fecal matter of human, and animal origin, fertilizers, pesticides, and household waste.

One of the tools applied to determine the pollution and stress status of an environment is through macrobenthic bioindicators. This study aimed 1) to validate ex situ experimental conditions by comparing different physical-chemical and biological variables between in situ and ex situ treatments after 13 days; 2) to analyze, through an ex situ experiment, the effect produced by two concentrations of crude oil (1 g/kg and 20 g/kg) on the Caleta Sara polychaete assemblages at different depths of the sediment column (0-8 cm and 8-16 cm), and 3) to evaluate the application of 'taxonomic sufficiency' concept on crude oil experiment data. The abundance, richness, diversity and bioturbation showed a significant decrease in oil-polluted sediment only at the upper level. Capitella (Capitellidae) and Boccardia (Spionidae) were the most abundant at the highest oil concentration. The results were similar at both taxonomic levels, indicating that it would be possible to assess the effect of crude oil on the assemblages even at the family level, especially under acute ecotoxicological conditions. However, the ratio of families to genera was 1:1 in all cases, except for Spionidae. Therefore, identification at the family level should only be considered for low-diversity polychaete assemblages. This study is the first to evaluate the assemblages of Caleta Sara under conditions modified by crude oil in the laboratory. Thus, natural conditions are simulated and any negative impact on the study site is avoided. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

With the projected increases in shipping activity and hydrocarbon extraction globally, there is an increased risk of negative ecological impacts from oil pollution on the marine environment, including seabirds. Oil Vulnerability Indices (OVIs) are a common approach to assess seabird species vulnerability to oil pollution and to identify where species are most at risk, typically across regional spatial scales and for a relatively limited number of species. This approach generally requires comprehensive data on at-sea distributions and densities; however, for many regions, these data are limited. We present a simplified OVI to assess seabird species vulnerability to oil pollution. To create the spatial component of the OVI, we used a predictive foraging radius approach, using existing colony size and foraging range data, to project at-sea distributions of seabird populations during the breeding season. We demonstrate this approach over a large spatial scale, the eastern North Atlantic, which includes areas where seabird at-sea data are lacking. Our results reveal areas off west Greenland, Iceland, and Norway where seabirds are most vulnerable to oil pollution during the breeding season, largely driven by large colonies of auks (Alcidae). We also identify locations along the coast of mainland Norway, Iceland, and Scotland, where seabirds are particularly at risk to oil pollution associated with major shipping routes. Identifying areas where species are most at risk can help inform where, and which, measures should be put in place to mitigate the impacts of oil pollution, such as protecting and avoiding high risk areas, for example, through adopting dynamic Areas to be Avoided (ATBAs). Our simplified OVI combined with the predictive foraging radius approach can be adapted to other regions globally that lack seabird-at-sea distribution data, to other marine wildlife, and to assess risk from hydrocarbon extraction and other anthropogenic threats, including fishing activities and offshore renewable developments. With a myriad of associated health, ecological and social benefits, urban greening has become a prominent policy strategy to renew historically neglected sites in cities, so popular that its implementation often eludes scrutiny. Utilising resident interviews, this paper investigates the distribution of 'wellbeing' narratives and objectives in such transformations. We demonstrate how affinities with nature are utilised to hasten green happy-futures, whilst neglecting to address ongoing questions of social and environmental justice. This paper foregrounds these injustices by attending to the affective dimensions of past and present experiences of environmental damage, advocating for the prioritisation of caring-futures over happy-futures in urban greening imaginaries. Introduction: Small cetaceans are good bioindicators of environmental contamination; however, knowledge about their ecotoxicological status in Central America is scarce. In Panama, access to samples from wild populations to determine the ecotoxicological status of oceanic dolphins is limited; therefore, stranding events provide an alternative for obtaining samples. In April 2016, a rare mass stranding event occurred in the Azuero Peninsula (Pacific coast of Panama), where 60 rough-toothed dolphins (Steno bredanensis) stranded, including ten which died on the beach. Objective: To assess total mercury (THg) concentrations, and δ13C and δ15N stable isotope values in roughtoothed dolphins for the first time in this region. Methods: Nine skin samples were collected from adults, stored in 70 % ethanol, and posteriorly analyzed to determine THg concentrations and stable isotope values. Results: THg concentrations ranged from 4 764 to 18 689 ng g-1 dry weight (dw) (mean = 12 841; SD = 5 083 ng g-1 dw), δ13C values ranged between -16.8 and -15.2 ‰ (mean = -16.2; SD = 0.6 ‰), and d15N values ranged between 14.3 and 15.9 ‰ (mean = 15.0; SD = 0.5 ‰). Conclusions: High THg concentrations reported for this species in the Azuero Peninsula are consistent with values reported for rough-toothed dolphins in other areas worldwide, such as the central-northern Rio de Janeiro State in Brazil and La Guajira in the Colombian Caribbean. Elevated mercury (Hg) concentrations may be related to the rough-toothed dolphin diet, which according to δ15N values found here, appears to be based mainly on high trophic level prey that bioaccumulate more Hg in their tissues compared to lower trophic level organisms. However, additional dietary studies would be required to support these findings. Continuing monitoring of traditional dietary analysis, as well as contamination levels in fish and dolphins, is necessary to understand the dolphins' ecotoxicology in Panama. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
