ABSTRACT Objectives: To know the effect of self-transcendence on well-being, for which the hypothesis was raised that indicates that the greater the self-transcendence (intrapersonal, interpersonal and transpersonal [spirituality]), the greater the well-being (physical, psychological and social) in elderly. Methodology: predictive descriptive study. The population was older adults of both sexes. The sampling was stratified random probabilistic, the total sample was 251 older adults. Results: The effect of self-transcendence and spirituality was significant (F(1,249) = 4.24, p=.015) on physical well-being (sensible alcohol consumption) explaining 25% of the total variance. Regarding the effect of these same variables on psychological well-being, it can be seen that the model was significant (F(1,249) = 51.52, p=.001) explaining 28.8% of the total variance. Finally, it was identified that the effect of self-transcendence and spirituality on social well-being was significant (F(1,249) = 31.00, p=.001), this model explained 20.0% of the total variance. Conclusions: Self-transcendence (intra- and interpersonal and transpersonal [spirituality]) has an effect on physical well-being (sensible alcohol consumption), psychological and social well-being. Therefore, it is considered that nursing should address these study problems under theoretical frameworks that promote the comprehensive development of the elderly and facilitate the well-being of the person at all stages of life.

YOUNG adults , *ALCOHOL drinking , *FEMININITY , *MASCULINITY , *GENDER identity - Abstract
Introduction: Alcohol consumption is a complex social practice that plays a role in building and consolidating friendships, as well as creating gender identities. The latter determines the limits of behaviors and defines what is considered appropriate or inappropriate in our daily routine; therefore, alcohol consumption patterns are not independent of gender. Objective: To identify and describe available evidence on the influence of gender on youth alcohol consumption. Materials and method: A review was conducted under JBI and Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses, Extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR) guidelines. Original full-text articles published between 2018 and 2023 in the VHL, PubMed, EBSCOhost, Web of Sciences, Epistemonikos, ScienceDirect, and ProQuest databases, without language limitations, were analyzed. The search categories were “Alcohol Drinking” AND “Young Adult” AND “Gender Identity” OR “Gender role”. Results: A total of 403 records were identified, but only 12 studies were included in the synthesis. The main results of these studies showed that both gender identity and gender roles influence alcohol consumption in young adults. Social gender norms may pressure young women to maintain a physical image and young men to maintain a normative public image. Conclusions: Social gender norms influence alcohol consumption behaviors; therefore, it is necessary to take these gender differences into account in nursing interventions and prevention strategies. AND “Young Adult” AND “Gender Identity” OR “Gender role”.

Objective. To explore the discourses and opinions about the collective consumption of alcohol with a gender perspective in university students. Methodology. Qualitative descriptive study. Information was collected through discussion groups in Seville in February and March 2019. 32 first-year nursing students participated. For data analysis, the Taylor & Bogdan steps were followed and a matrix was used for the categorization process. Four groups were made, aged between 18-24 years. Results. The following categories were obtained: type and form of consumption, social roles and behaviors. Conclusions. Gender differences are reflected in the students' discourse, highlighting the dissimilarities in behavior between genders and the greater guilt suffered by women. The female gender is the most noted for exceeding the limits and the most vulnerable in nightlife. This suggests the need to generate interventions aimed at redefining the stereotypes of the patriarchal model associated with gender and alcohol consumption, in order to minimize risk behaviors in youth leisure. Objective. To characterize alcohol consumption patterns (current and heavy episodic drinking) in Mexican adolescents and adults. Materials and methods. We analyzed data from Encuesta Nacional de Salud y Nutrición Continua 2022 (Ensanut Continua 2022) representative at national and regional level. We estimated the prevalence of current drinking and heavy episodic drinking in the past 12 months, and in the past 30 days. Results. In adolescents, the prevalence of current drinking and heavy episodic drinking in the past 12 months, and in the past 30 days was 20.6, 13.9, and 5.2%. In adults, the prevalence of current drinking, heavy episodic drinking in the past 12 months, and in the past 30 days was 55.5, 40.4, and 19.1%. The prevalence was higher in men than women, with significant differences in adults. In adolescents, the prevalence was higher at older age, socioeconomic level and in those without studies. In adults, the prevalence was higher at younger age, higher socioeconomic level, and education, and in metropolitan areas. Conclusion. These results show the need to strengthen the implementation, monitoring and protection actions offered by SAFER strategy to prevent and reduce the harmful use of alcohol in adolescents and adults.

Introduction: Alcohol consumption carries a heavy social and economic burden on society, government, overall health, and health systems. Objective: Determine the relationship and effect of family dynamics and school social environment on alcohol consumption in young university students. Methodology: This was a descriptive, correlational and predictive study with a sample of 367 undergraduate students from a university in the state of Tabasco, Mexico, selected by stratified random probability sampling. The 63.2% were women, with a mean age of 21.6 years (SD=2.82). A Personal Identity Card and Prevalence of Alcohol Consumption Questionnaire, the Family Apgar, the Questionnaire to Evaluate the Social Environment within the School and the AUDIT were used. The study complied with the provisions of the Regulations of the General Health Law on Research. Results: Family dynamics and school social environment were negatively and significantly related to alcohol consumption and to the three types of consumption: low-risk, dependent and harmful. Family dynamics (B= -.040, p<.05) and school social environment (B= -.096, p<.001) were identified as predictors of alcohol consumption in university young people. Conclusion: Family dynamics and school social environment as predictors of alcohol consumption may help to prevent this harmful behavior in young university students. These results can contribute to the inclusion of these variables in the understanding of alcohol consumption behavior. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Introduction: Alcohol consumption impacts men and women differently due to the biological characteristics of both sexes. The evaluation of the influence of consuming and not consuming alcohol on blood pressure could differ in both sexes, making it necessary to know this profile in Peru, a country with one of the highest rates of alcohol consumption on the continent. Objective: To analyze the relationship between blood pressure and being or not a consumer of alcoholic beverages in adults of the Peruvian population.Methodology: Observational, analytical, retrospective, and cross-sectional study based on data from the Peruvian national and family health survey. The variables were: sex, systolic, diastolic, mean arterial pressure (MAP), educational level, alcohol consumption, body mass index, and abdominal circumference. The Chi-square test, prevalence ratio, crude Odds Ratio, and adjusted Odds Ratio using binary logistic regressionwere performed. Results: Alcohol consumption was high in men (94.90%) and women (88.20%). The average blood pressure in men and women who consume alcoholic beverages was higher compared to those who had never drunk and was higher in men. Women who consume alcoholic beverages had a 1.11 times higher prevalence of elevated MAP than non-consumers. Male alcoholic beverage consumers had a 1.66 times higher prevalence of elevated MAP than non-consumers. In the multivariate analysis, there was no association between alcohol consumption and elevated MAP in women. In men, alcohol drinkers were 1.74 times more likely to have hypertension than men who had never drunk alcoholic beveragesConclusions: The consumption of alcoholic beverages increases the prevalence of hypertension in adults of the Peruvian population, being a predictive factor of hypertension in men.

Introduction: Individual and cultural aspects condition alcohol intake. Objective: To identify the effect of interventions conducted in Latin America on consumption patterns or associated risk factors for alcohol consumption among young university students. Materials and Methods: Systematic review based on a PICO question. A literature search was conducted from April to August 2020 in PubMed, CUIDEN, BVS, Scielo, Google Scholar, and Governmental Repositories. DeCS and MeSH descriptors in Spanish, English, and Portuguese were used with Boolean operators AND and OR. Eligibility criteria included experimental and quasi-experimental studies published between 2014 and 2020. Forty-nine articles were identified, and critical reading allowed the selection of 8 articles to which the AMSTAR2, TREND, and CONSORT appraisal tools were used, leaving 6 articles for analysis. In accordance with Article 10 of Resolution 008430/93, this was considered risk-free research. Results: Single-component interventions reported effects on behavioral beliefs, attitudes, knowledge of the substance, academic performance, lower frequency of drinking, and not driving under the influence of alcohol. Multicomponent interventions reduced consumption risk by 3.03% and reported positive perceptions regarding the usefulness of activities, expectations fulfillment, overall satisfaction, quality of materials used, attendance, and punctuality. Discussion: The studies suggest implementing new interventions, strategies and policies in primary health to promote a social, educational and health transformation that generate a favorable impact to mitigate the current problem of alcohol consumption in university students. Conclusions: This systematic review made it possible to synthesize and evaluate the available evidence on single- and multicomponent interventions in Latin America and the Caribbean that positively modify risk factors and consumption patterns in young university students. Introduction: Situation-Specific Theories (SST) address a relatively concrete and specific phenomenon that allow describing, explaining and predicting how it occurs. Their main function is to provide a structure and a guidance for the interpretation of initially puzzling behaviors, processes, human responses and events. Objective: to generate a SST that explains the socio-ecological protective factors of alcohol consumption in young university students based on the analysis of McLeroy's Socio-Ecological Model (SEM). Methodology: the Conceptual-Theoretical-Empirical (C-T-E) structure proposed by Fawcett was used, which consists of five steps 1) identification of concepts, 2) classification of concepts, 3) identification and classification of propositions, 4) hierarchical order of propositions and 5) construction of the diagram. Results: the SST is the result of the C-T-E structure, contributes to the identification of a discipline-specific phenomenon, and determines concepts, relationships and possible effect of protective factors on drinking behavior. Conclusion: the method was appropriate to build the Situation-Specific Theory as it allowed its development having a conceptual and theoretical basis and empirical indicators with which the concepts (variables) can be measured in different contexts (research and practice). Objective: to determine the relationship and the effects of age, schooling, resilience, life satisfaction and human strengths with alcohol consumption in university students. Method: descriptive, correlational and predictive design, the participants were 367 students (63.2% women) aged 18 to 35 years (M=21.64, SD= 2.82) from a university in the state of Tabasco, Mexico. They were selected by stratified random probability sampling. Data collection was carried out during June and July 2021. Results: students with higher levels of resilience are more satisfied with life and have more human strengths. Age was related to alcohol consumption, and to low-risk and dependent drinking. The lower the indices of human strengths, the higher the low-risk and dependent alcohol consumption. Human strengths were shown to be predictors (B=- 0.14, p<.01) of alcohol consumption in young university students. Conclusion: human strengths are a negative predictor of alcohol consumption in college youth. These findings may contribute to a better understanding of the phenomenon of alcohol consumption. Objective. To report the risk from alcohol, cannabis, and their combined use for non-fatal road traffic injuries for drivers, passengers, and pedestrians. Methods. Risk was estimated using the case-crossover method. Participants (N= 306) were injured patients from an emergency department in Mar del Plata, Argentina. Results. Alcohol use (OR= 6.78, CI 95% 3.75-12.25) as well as combined alcohol and cannabis use (OR= 7.05, CI 95% 1.16-42.73) significantly increased the risk of a road traffic injuries. Alcohol use increased the risk in both, women (OR= 8.87, CI 95% 2.69-29.21) and men (OR= 6.16, CI 95% 3.10-12.23); in those >30 years old (OR= 6.01, CI 95% 2.09-17.24) and those <30 years old (OR= 7.15, CI 95% 3.49-14.65). This last group also had an increased risk after combined alcohol and cannabis use (OR= 7.05, CI 95% 1.16-42.75). Both drivers (OR= 6.40, CI 95% 3.23-12.69) and passengers (OR= 13.83, CI 95% 2.87-66.42) had an increased risk after alcohol consumption. Conclusions. To our knowledge, these are the first estimates of the risk of having a road traffic injury after alcohol and cannabis consumption in one of the countries of the Southern Cone (Argentina, Chile, and Uruguay). These results highlight the urgent need to implement and enforce comprehensive alcohol control measures. Furthermore, given the global trend towards legalizing cannabis for recreational use, our results could also inform policymakers to enact or amend impaired driving laws. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
