n this paper the author tries to broaden the conceptual field of the unrealised artwork to include thefate of that which is subject to inevitable processes of transformation.Like any vital process, transformation introduces new elements of meaning and new possibilities ofcognitive connections together with, sometimes spectacular, physical changes in the material of whichthe work is composed. One can question the idea that the work of art must have a finite andimmutable material configuration, as well as a determined historical-critical interpretation. One canthink that the artwork is alive, precisely because it is not realised.

Near Piazza Armerina (Enna), at the beginning of the cen. XX, the remains of the Roman Villa del Casale (4th century AD), with rich mosaic floors, were discovered. After the first restoration, in the mid-fifties of the cen. XX, the architect Minissi and C. Brandi designed a stable protection and system for the use of the remains of the villa. The roof was made with modern materials: aluminum profiles and sheets of glass and perspex, which evoked the ancient volumes, while maintaining the authenticity of the remains. The arrangement, due to lack of maintenance, has been a source of deterioration for the mosaics, and in fact since 2007 the works for their destruction and replacement have begun, according to a project (commissioner V. Sgarbi, arch. G. Meli) that requires a vision both external and internal unsatisfactory. Even if the problems related to water infiltration and microclimatic data appear solved, as well as those of enhancement and use, thanks to the implementation of the Management Plan (2012), the overall vision refers to warehouses or deposits that cover remains of extraordinary beauty.

Montecatini Terme, emblematic city for the close combination between thermal baths and urban structure, has been recently enrolled in the list of the Unesco Heritage. It becames particularly urgent to deepen the knowledge, in an appropriate way, of the building ensemble that can be considered the key features in the enrollement, for the purposes of their protection and safeguard. Among these, the Tettuccio bath assumes a particular relevance with regard to the complex architectural articulation, the richness of the decorative characteristics and the variety of the materials used. For this purpose, a laser scanner survey combined with photogrammetry was carried out, thus obtaining a high level of instrumental data, integrated by accurate in-place information. This approach highlighted the materials, traditional and modern, and the decay of the building, founded by the grand duke Pietro Leopoldo and almost completely refashioned about a century ago.

The conservation risks associated with climate change to which heritage is subjected represent one of the most significant issues arising from the adoption of the 1972 World Heritage Convention. The Outstanding Universal Value (OUV) of World Heritage Listed sites and the conditions of integrity and authenticity, which were essential requirements at the time of their nomination and inscription, may be compromised or no longer be met over time as a result of the effects of climate action on heritage assets. While the value of sustainability has assumed a predominant role in the multiple social, cultural, economic and environmental contexts and is in affinity with many of the theoretical premises within the discipline of restoration, this study aims to reflect on some of the systemic principles and parameters through which a restoration product can be defined as sustainable, considering the material authenticity and uniqueness of World Heritage architectural artefacts, and the spatial-temporal implications related to the conservation of cultural heritage.

9. Daniele Calabi’s Seaside Holiday Camp at Lido di Venezia: From Knowledge to Reuse Strategies

- Abstract
The Lido of Venice, a strip of land between the sea and the lagoon, has been the favourite vacation spot for Venetians for over a century. Since the establishment of the first bathhouse (1857), during the nineteenth century the beaches of the Lido had become a tourist destination, thanks to the edification of important luxury hotels and Art Nouveau houses. In this context of great change, the seaside holiday camp “Principi di Piemonte” was designed by Daniele Calabi and erected between 1936 and 1937, commissioned by the Municipality of Padua in order to have a touristic location on Venetian land. Located on a plot of more than 14.000 m2, the holiday camp consists of buildings organized around a large courtyard cut out in a rigid geometric grid, originally open to the sea. However, significant transformative processes have changed the layout over time, in some cases betraying the architect’s original idea. Through the analysis of the archival documentation held in the Archivio Progetti of the Università Iuav di Venezia, the paper analyzes both the design and the construction of the complex, and highlights the peculiar context of experimentation and innovation on building materials and techniques connected to the Italian autarchic years. The paper also considers the current process aimed at reusing the site by involving public and private stakeholders, and highlights how holiday camps represent a chance to investigate cultural, technical, and economic issues while preserving modern heritage.

10. When a Masterpiece is Auctioned Off: The Holiday Camp Rinaldo Piaggio in Santo Stefano d’Aveto

- Abstract
This essay contributes to the discussion around the following question: what happens after a children’s holiday camp ceases its activities? Are abandonment and ruin an inevitable fate? The former mountain holiday camp “Rinaldo Piaggio” is the case study around which this reflection unfolds. The holiday camp was built by the Genoese architect Luigi Carlo Daneri in 1939 in Santo Stefano d'Aveto, Liguria, where it housed the children of employees of the Pontedera company until 1983. Later, it was sold and affected by an unsuccessful project to convert it into a healthcare residence, and as of today, it is painfully encumbered by a judicial sale procedure, and is in short “a masterpiece at auction.” The holiday camp is mentioned in many publications on modern architecture and was declared of cultural interest in 1996. This vast historical-critical consensus, however, was never followed by a monographic study aimed at understanding the problems of the building’s conservation, its functional recovery, and the preservation of its modernist qualities. After an introduction on the building, the text reconstructs the attempts to transform and update its use, focusing on what has happened in the last two years, between the start of bankruptcy proceedings and an unexpected opportunity to protect the architectural qualities of this masterpiece and promote the revival of its accommodation function.

The Casa del Fascio e dell'Ospitalità of Predappio is a significant case study of an iconic building that, more than others, has materialized the “architectural propaganda” of the fascist regime in Italy between the two World Wars. The project by Arnaldo Fuzzi (1891-1974) was supposed to be the manifesto of the architectural and technological progress of the Fascist regime, but it will become instead an expression of the failure of its management skills. In the post-war period, this building fell into a state of neglect, due both to the fact that it was one of the most symbolic architectureS of the regime and to the inability to find an adequate re-use – becoming a sort of “dead monument”. In 2010 the former Casa del Fascio was appointed a “listed building” giving a boost to the preservation of this architecture as a document of a “difficult heritage”. The present contribution matches historical research and preservation, explaining the path that leads up to the current restoration project (2019-2020). The intervention methodology searches for a balance between the preservation of the building identity and the necessary adaptation to the current needs, choosing a multidisciplinary and coordinated approach.

Gio Ponti has proposed in his writings a significant reflection on the relationship between architecture, time and construction materials, where architecture does not presuppose immutability and does not associate time with decay. Ponti’s statements introduce us to an apparent contradiction with respect to the famous assimilation of his architecture to crystals. Indeed, Ponti is aware of a paradox of modern architecture: it requires time to be alive, but it is constantly forced to oppose it because it seems unable to age. The paper discusses the two alternatives that Ponti proposes (technical architecture and natural architecture) and discusses his ideas in the cultural context at the time on restoration, durability, care and new modern materials. Finally, a contribution is proposed here to a conservation perspective in which the aging of the Modern could be a matter of cultural appropriation.

Reflecting about the documentary heritage of artists requires the consideration of archival, legal, historical-artistic and museological factors. If the analogue productions of artifacts and the correlated documentation have been studied, transferring the creative perspective into a digital environment asks to face a reality in turmoil: the ways of expressing and representing contemporary art, in balance between digital and crypto art, require new visions in the production and management of works. In this redefinition of roles and relationships, which almost exclusively concern the documentary structure and the technological and digital components, document systems assume a primary role. In an age like the present one, marked by a growing sensitivity towards the issues of recovery and enhancement of minor historical centres, abandoned or in the process of depopulation, the case study of the medieval village of Craco is a practical example of the settlements in Lucania affected by this phenomenon. In 1963 a landslide undermined the survival of the village, so much to cause a progressive depopulation and transfer of all the inhabitants in the nearby village of Peschiera. A condition of geographic marginality, together with the state of decay of the village, now deprived of its original vocation and constant maintenance, has become an attractive note for an ever-increasing number of visitors. In 2013, the Scenographic Park of the ruins was established in Craco, which determined the securing of part of its buildings along a well-defined itinerary to secure part of its buildings along a welldefined itinerary. The precarious geological nature of the site makes the hypothesis of a complete recovery of the settlement unthinkable. Towards a valid proposal for conservation and enhancement of the village has been undertaken, whose results made it possible to formulate Guidelines, weighted between the two current antithetical visions: a positive one that considers possible the recovery, at least partial, of the built environment through new forms of anthropization, and a more cautious one looking to a museum display for tourists.

The issue of the historical centres is a matter of physical conservation and socio-economic managing. Physical conservation of common historical buildings needs special tools to check the vulnerability and to address intervention on them. The development of digitalization gives new and interesting possibilities to pursue this aim. The essay gives a synthetic panorama of the Geographic Information Systems that are currently available to describe the territory in Italy, starting from the institutional geoportals. These illustrate the regional urban planning and other aspects of the territory, among them sometime there are the geo-localisation of the historical centres, without no descriptions of their features and their state of conservation. The Risk Map is a GIS of the MiBACT (Ministry for cultural heritage and activities and tourism) dedicated to vulnerability and risk of loss of cultural heritage assessment. A development of this system for a new way of managing the historical centres has been studied by a research group of Sapienza with experts of the Istituto Centrale per il Restauro and Istituto Centrale del Catalogo e della Documentazione of MiBACT. This allows a detailed representation of the historical centre vulnerability through six levels of description, from the urban scale to that of the building façade. The features of the historical centres in Latium have helped us to define five different categories of settlements that are at risk or in condition of abandon. For each of them we have analysed the possible use of the Risk Map, referring to different existing scheduling models and making a hypothesis for new special development of the system to check the protection of abandoned sites.

The region of Abruzzo has been struck by several earthquakes, including those of the eighteenth century (1703 in L’Aquila and 1706 in Sulmona) and the earthquake of Avezzano in 1915, which were particularly destructive not only for monuments but also for small historic centres. In addition to the town of L’Aquila, the earthquake of 6 April 2009 struck many small villages of historic, artistic and environmental interest (there are approximately 55 municipalities consisting mainly of ancient areas) within the L’Aquila hinterland. These are smaller centres generally affected by previous, unresolved depopulation and abandonment phenomena, already recorded in literature, immediately after the Unification of Italy and that increased in particular in the post-war period. Through some appropriately selected cases, the paper aims to describe the damage scenarios caused to the small historic centers of Abruzzo, by the most significant earthquakes that have particularly struck this region since the eighteenth century. Then, feedback on the intervention strategies realized from time to time is described, which were aimed at the recovery of small historic centres. Considerations are then made on the consequences in terms of recovery of use of villages, and above all on the preservation of their constructive identity character.

The 2016 seismic event was exceptional due to the vastness of the territory concerned, the peculiar characteristics of the damaged historic centers and the singular commingling of architecture and context. The extension of the concept of monument to broader areas and dimensions poses new critical and interpretative problems relating to the 'sense of place' and consequently requires the adoption of appropriate intervention tools, connected to the urban planning discipline and to the methodologies of territorial planning, to be added to those of the restoration. In terms of urban memory, it will therefore be necessary to promote a reconstruction process, based on the repair, recovery and restoration of what was saved from the earthquake, even of the 'imprint' of the places (squares, roads, housing types, etc.) , avoiding complete demolition and subsequent reconstruction from scratch; the existing road and land structure, a permanent and recognizable document, constitutes the authentic testimony of the anthropic structure. The reconstruction-translation of the minor historical nucleuses and the contextual, consequent, cancellation of permanent signs, would definitively subtract every trace of their evolutionary memory and at the same time a significant cultural aspect of that region; nor would a conservation based on historical selection be valid because an urban nucleus is, by its nature, an ever-present historical present, laden with values that contribute to the definition of its identity.

New Life for Mondonico: from “Ghost Village” to Agro-forest University Campus The project of preservation and revitalization of Mondonico, an ancient village of the Municipality of Dorio located on the eastern shore of Como lake, is an example of care and protection of Cultural heritage. The development of the small village that was in a state of neglect, has generated a multidisciplinary collaborative analysis between Politecnico di Milano and Ball State University of Indiana, during some courses of Architecture and Building Engineering at Politecnico di Milano in Lecco. The goal of this research is to give an example of protection of historical built landscape aimed at reviving the territory. The methodology applied during the academic course is the comparison of analysis tools such as historical-archival research, investigation on buildings and paths’ modifications over time, visual analysis of the landscape, evaluation of the state of conservation, information about people and citizens’ expectations through SWOT analysis (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats). The proposal is for an Agro-forest university campus, which would revitalize the village of Mondonico and its abandoned buildings. The project aims to preserve the agricultural and construction techniques. The project would preserve the “environmental value of the village” by adapting existing buildings to the new use and current regulations without forgetting the entirety of the place.

Along the Mediterranean coasts of Turkey there are still traces, sometimes consistent and sometimes fragmented, of important urban centers now abandoned. These ruins are the result of natural events, climatic or geo-morphological changes, but also political and economic changes or religious conflicts that have affected the territories of Asia Minor for centuries. In particular, the coasts between Silifke and Mersin offer interesting causes for reflections on the dynamics of abandonment of urban settlements. In fact, here the presence of ruins that are unstable or in a condition of primary collapse demonstrate the succession, over the centuries, of numerous seismic events that forced the population to abandon these places. However, the existence of traces of different cultures (pagan, Byzantine, Islamic) add information about the abandonment of these centers due to religious or social conflicts. On these premise, and with reference to the sites of Korikos, Elaiussa, Kanitelleys and Akkale, the contribution will analyze the causes of the abandonments and the effects they have had on the architectural and urban heritage. These can be examined so as to propose conservation (excavation campaigns, appropriate studies, restoration interventions) and enhancement (dissemination of the results of archaeological research, inclusion in consolidated tourist itineraries) strategies that recognize the value of cultural testimony.

The conservation of abandoned urban sites, increasingly widespread all over the Italian territory and mainly along the mountain slopes, represents a complex cultural challenge which includes cultural, psychological, economic, technical, as well as aesthetic and social issues. While the sudden or progressive abandonment has guaranteed, in some ways, the preservation of authentic material values, at the same time the possibility of exploiting the places again through the restoration of architecture and the improvement of conditions of accessibility is functional also for the protection of the built heritage and the intangible values that characterize it. Starting from this, the contribution focuses on a synoptic framework of interventions and strategies aimed at the redevelopment of partially or totally abandoned urban sites in Italy, concentrating attention on the goals of diverse choices for safeguarding historic heritage. The framework aims at defining an atlas of practices that, within the complex restorative approach, can provide useful cultural stimuli to calibrate interventions respecting the multiplicity of instances and values involved in historic heritage. Specific focus is, therefore, placed on the paradigmatic case of the abandoned village of Tocco Caudio near Benevento, the subject of a research program undertaken between 2012 and 2017 at the University of Naples Federico II, characterized by the construction of a “participatory” process of possible alternatives for intervention. Borghi storici, rovine, monumenti.

Current Italian law concerning seismic risk assessment and reduction is at an advanced stage regarding cultural heritage but is minimally applied in private buildings. Multidisciplinary studies have continuously remarked how the vulnerability of historic masonry-aggregate constructions increases due to many causes other than degradation and damage, such as their intrinsic characteristics, including, stratified development, continuity of use, state of abandonment or absence of maintenance. Due to their problematic and often unpredictable behaviour during an earthquake, aggregate buildings are not frequently tested and there is a lack of appropriate instruments for their interpretation. There is a need, firstly, to invest more in studies to produce models similar to reality and secondly, to make trustworthy interpretations and predictions on behaviour and damage in the case of an earthquake. The current research focused on the proposal for a simplified method concerning seismic vulnerability assessment of aggregated buildings in historical centres. The final purpose is to support local administrations and/or owners of the buildings in strategic decision making, to define priority lists regarding structures more in need of specific analysis and, potentially, of focused interventions. The experiment was undertaken in Civita di Bagnoregio (VT), a historical centre which was gradually abandoned due to earthquakes and hydrogeological instability.

The article illustrates two elements of conflict found in the Ndoinet Forest area (Mau complex, Kenya): the first concerns the contrasting vision of the local communities and Kenya Forest Service (KFS) of degraded forest areas. The second concerns the conservation practices promoted by the forest service, specifically reforestation initiatives and the proposal to erect an electric fence. After illustrating the most common uses of the forest by the local population, I reflect on the conflicting elements that are created between these and the conservation measures by referring to “classic” and new themes of political ecology.

The preservation and maintenance of the cultural identity of a territory passes through the recognition of the architectural landscape and anthropological peculiarities of the area, so called “recognition of the genius loci”. The risk is of the gradual loss of memory of these fundamental elements, which are being mainly replaced by standard elements, belonging to a substance of “virtual” poor, both in singularity and specificity. The study and identification of "monuments, settled in historical centres which are abandoned, or, in the process of abandonment, architectural ruins almost completely devoid of" meaning ". Their preservation with new functions can be the way to reach the goal, only if the knowledge procedure of restoration, restoration work analysis, and reuse project- in other words – the restoration and the architecture project satisfy the real needs of the users of these so-called new monuments. The real risk is that of creating ancient paradigms, recognised in semantic languages, that are gradually being lost, numerous "new" urban architectural units which are not integrated with the landscape, which are not "really useful" and which do not provide a connection to an overall masterplan. Rediscovering ancient mills located on the internal mountain areas, industrial factories existing along the Calabrian coastlines, ancient powerfully-built places such as fortresses: the restoration of these buildings can have a lasting outcome over time when completed together with a more general plan including the realisation of eco-sustainable routes and connection routes within the surrounding territory.

The technological advances of recent decades and the integration of disciplines, such as architectural technology and restoration, are progressively improving design culture in the conservation of modern and contemporary heritage. The results of the study focus on the effects produced by a relatively short time interval (50-100 years) on a large number of buildings, encouraging a discussion on the role of technology in the conservation of exemplary cases of Modern heritage, and on the potential impact of this phenomenon on the so-called minor heritage, thus offering tools to support a widespread improvement campaign, one of the most demanding challenges of future decades. The success of the strategies for safeguarding, preserving and maintaining the precious assets of the huge European Cultural Heritage still represents a challenge that many countries tackle with limited or inadequate actions or systems, despite the fact that the international community is now aware of the serious risks endangering its heritage. The nature of this fragile context requires the knowledge of data and information other than the technical and construction characteristics of buildings. The paper describes an innovative management tool for inspection and maintenance of historical and monumental buildings, developed within the Horizon 2020 European research project INCEPTION (Inclusive Cultural Heritage in Europe through 3D semantic modelling). The need to "renew" the historical building heritage and, therefore, the possibility of introducing innovative technologies and components capable of ensuring its optimal performance pose the difficult question of assessing whether technological intervention for sustainable performance adaptability should be considered a "threat," while acknowledging that it efficiently helps to safeguard an existing historical building in the long-term and to preserve its cultural value over time. This article presents the case study for the diagnostics, evaluation and maintenance of the Church of S. Giovanni Battista in Florence, designed by G. Michelucci after the catastrophic event of 2015 that partly destroyed its roof. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

If the road towards a progressive dematerialization of the administrative document is marked, the legislator is not always proceeding in a coherent, clear or complete way. The line of reasoning needs to be focused on the administration of documental heritage, training and preservation rather than on technological issues, involving actively local administration and taking on responsibilities on decisions, also on the relationship between costs and benefits. The way is hard due to the lack of debate and practical directions, where the preservation should not be considered as a commanding confirmation, but as an occasion to face complex and critical issues.

Calamita Cosmica is the name that the artist Gino De Dominicis gave to one of his sculptures representing a gigantic skeleton. In 2001, after several relocations, the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Foligno bought the work of art and placed it into the old church of Santissima Trinità in Annunziata in Foligno. This intervention represents a particular example of re-using an ecclesiastical space, where a single work found a perfect location and an appropriate exhibition strategy. After the analysis of similar experiences, this paper proposes a consideration about the reuse of churches as contemporary art galleries and about its coexistence with the sacred place.

To pilgrims coming from the Mediterranean and Europe arrived in Asia Minor, some cities appeared real “wonderlands". The amazement reason was given mainly by Christian basilicas that rose complex and impressive in a context of the Roman ruins. These urban centers correspond to the sites of Christian communities mentioned in the Book of Revelation of Saint John. The pilgrims walked precise routes, touching devotional centers linked to the Apostle John, the Virgin, the first martyrs. But what the pilgrim felt yesterday and what remains today of these spiritual landscapes? Such as contingent valuation strategies? Based on these questions, the paper proposes a hypothesis of exploitation that do recognize, through evocations and tangible references, a dense area of spirituality and devotion that binds the past Pagan worship, Christian mysticism, Islamic religiosity

The presence on the Italian territory of itineraries of historical cult, along which have arisen networks of religious buildings, offers to the attention a very rich heritage, architectural and landscape, in good part today decommissioned if not reduced in conditions of neglect . Among other examples we note the rich abbeys system, convents and monasteries, functional to the cult of St. Michael the Archangel, widespread in the Gargano from the sixth century and supported the "sacred way" traveled by pilgrims, often on the track of the oldest routes . This paper tries to retrace the articulated story of these buildings, on the basis of first-hand documents resulting from accurate measurements of their geometry and their formal structure and residual material. The purpose is not only the networking of building actually inseparable from the territory of belonging, but also the verification of the wide horizon recovery projects.

The paper presents a combination of geophysics technologies and spatial analysis methods for the analysis of an improper geographical space: the frescoe of the east wall at the Gymnasium (Pompei). This allows to construct a decay map and to quantify decay patterns found as a first step for restauration, protection and mitigation of the risk that involves the frescoe.

The work focuses on one of the major monuments related to the monasticism of southern Italy, the church of San Adriano in San Demetrio Corone in the province of Cosenza, an ethno-anthropological arbí«reshí« jewel. The study is based on the cycle of frescoes that occupy the sub-arches and the walls of the minor naves inside the church, dated between the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, which in addition to representing an important narrative complex, it refers to similar works in the major ecclesiastical buildings of the south, including Calabria. In Calabria, in fact, we find terms of comparisons in the church of the Spedale of Scalea, in the church of Panaghia of Rossano, in the Cattolica of Stilo and in the church of the Campo of San Andrea Apostolo dello Jonio. The elaborate wants to demonstrate how these representations show, although they present a different date, a technical similarity with analogous frescoes of the Norman period present in Sicily, in particular similarities with those present in the Palatine Chapel of Palermo and the Duomo of Cefalù and Monreale. In support of this thesis, we propose the image analysis of some portions of the pictorial works supported by a careful historical-artistic study, with the aim to create a union between non-invasive and theoretical-executive diagnostic investigations. The section that we want to investigate concerns the actual status of the asset and will highlight a summary of the paintings in order to provide a general overall status, that it aims to be the starting point for a more in-depth future analysis of the whole complex considered
