This study reviewed the green and sustainable chemistry education (GSCE) research that provided training at the tertiary level from 2000 to 2024. The Web of Science and ERIC databases were screened using title and abstract review. In total, 49 studies were analysed. The analysis instrument has two main parts, namely, general characteristics of the training, which was formed in light of the GSCE literature (i.e., chemistry sub-disciplines, type of implementation, and context), and analysis of the training through the lens of pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) construct that is the commonly-used framework for the analysis of training regarding orientation to teaching GSCE, learner, curriculum, assessment, and instructional strategies utilised. Results showed that organic chemistry (n = 15) is the most emphasised branch of chemistry in the articles. Regarding the learner component, the studies were inadequate, and very few studies provided information about the misconceptions and difficulties that students may encounter while learning GSC. Regarding the curriculum component, among the green chemistry principles, 'use of renewable feedstocks' was the most emphasised, while the least emphasised ones were 'reduce derivatives' and 'real-time pollution prevention'. Fourteen studies used subject-specific teaching strategies (e.g., cooperative teaching and project-based strategies). Although representations are not used in GSCE, most of the studies included laboratory studies (n = 31). Finally, regarding the assessment, very few studies focused on measuring students' skills (laboratory skills, discussion skills, etc.) and affective variables. In light of the findings, GSCE training should get more benefit from the literature on science/chemistry teaching strategies. Moreover, alternative assessment tools (e.g., rubrics and concept maps) should be utilized regarding the instruments utilized to assess the participants' GSC knowledge.

Climate change (CC) is the most significant global issue facing humanity, yet research addressing the perspectives of the key players influential in developing and implementing school-based CC curricula at a cross-country national level is scarce. This study examined the perceptions of policymakers, teacher professional development providers and CCE teachers in relation to: CC knowledge, representation in the curriculum, content and pedagogy, and support for teaching. The voices of these educators were gathered across five countries (Australia, England, Finland, Indonesia, and Israel) through semi-structured interviews. Analysis revealed much commonality across the countries and across role types. Although participants agreed that CCE is multidisciplinary and expressed widespread support for including CC in the curriculum through a cross-curriculum approach, their conceptualisations of CC knowledge were inconsistent. Participants recognised the importance of a science basis in CCE, and of student action, with some participants also emphasising emotional, ethical and value-based inclusions. Most suggested active learning focused pedagogies. Variations in approaches to CC implementation between countries suggest that CCE is in a transitional phase. In all five countries, the interviewees called for the curriculum to make more explicit connections to CC and for governmental leadership in supporting CCE, professional development and provision of resources.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to assess how Sustainable food consumption (SFC) can improve the quality of life for consumers and encourage green food production. Sustainable consumption is an important factor in achieving the sustainable development goals (SDGs) proposed by the United Nations. However, achieving SFC requires government policies, consumer environmental values and accessible channels. Design/methodology/approach: This paper investigates how to promote SFC intentions using a sample of 386 students from Chinese universities. By using SPSS Process software, this study developed and tested a theoretical model grounded in the stimulus-organism-response (SOR) framework. Findings: The findings indicate that environmental emotions mediate the relationship between sustainability knowledge and SFC intentions. Contextual factors such as green self-efficacy (GSE) moderate both the direct relationship between environmental emotions and SFC intentions and the indirect relationship between sustainability knowledge and SFC intentions via environmental emotions. The paper continues with a discussion of the findings and their practical implications. Originality/value: This paper applied the SOR model to the context of students' sustainability knowledge and SFC intentions. This also presents environmental emotions as a mediation variable, and green self-efficacy as a moderating factor, and constructs the moderated mediation model. This is one of the novel contributions to the literature on SFC intentions and sustainability knowledge.

The Biltmore Forest School, despite its unusual existence within the affluent Biltmore Estate, played a crucial role in the early 20th-century American forestry movement. Founded by Carl A. Schenck and supported by George Vanderbilt II, the school aimed to educate foresters and promote sustainable forest management. However, many aspects of the Biltmore experiment failed due to the new and untested nature of forestry science in America. This experiment exposed a fundamental divide in forestry education, with Gifford Pinchot advocating for conservation-centered teaching while Schenck believed in the economic viability of lumber production. Ultimately, the Biltmore Forest School offered valuable vocational education for young men but could not address the broader goals of forestry education. The emergence of other forestry schools in the early 20th century led to the school's demise. The larger purpose of forestry education was rooted in scientific forestry, focusing on profitable production, renewable yield, and forest improvement, principles echoed in modern forest conservation efforts. The Biltmore Forest School closed in 1914 due to low enrollment. That same year, George Vanderbilt died. His widow Edith eventually sold the forest, which grew to 500,000 acres, to the United States Forest Service. Edith Vanderbilt's vision of private forest land as a public trust contributed to the establishment of Pisgah National Forest, preserving the pioneering work of Vanderbilt, Schenck, and Pinchot in forest conservation for the benefit of the American people.

This meta-analysis evaluated how well learners' conceptual understanding, environmental attitudes, and pro-environmental behavior were improved by the Socio-Scientific Issues (SSI)-based approach based on the literature (2017-2021). The research analyzed various studies on the efficacy of SSI-based techniques, such as argumentation, case-oriented approaches, and problem-based learning. The findings showed a strong positive influence on learners' understanding of intricate environmental concerns and their propensity for sustainable conduct. While the study found that the SSI-based approach fosters critical thinking and involvement in several noteworthy ways, it also uncovered potential publication biases in certain aspects. Furthermore, the research stressed the necessity of context-specific strategies and interdisciplinary collaboration to improve the robustness and application of SSI-based interventions in climate change education. The results highlight how the SSI-based approach can cultivate proactive, environmentally conscientious, knowledgeable citizens ready to address urgent global concerns.

Given the severe pollution caused by traditional plastics, biodegradable plastic products (BPPs) have received great attention and are appearing in people's lives in the form of packaging bags, tableware, etc. Whether a wide variety of BPPs can truly degrade depends on the environment. Aerobic composting is the arbitration method to evaluate the degradability of BPPs in a premarket review, so only the aerobic degradability of BPPs can be guaranteed. Anaerobic digestion has become an irreplaceable part of the global carbon cycle and a mainstream technique to dispose of organic wastes. However, little attention has been given to the anaerobic degradation of BPPs, which may cause environmental pollution if BPPs are not degraded within a short time period. Students are not aware of these issues. Therefore, the teacher carried out teaching reforms in biochemistry course by designing anaerobic degradation of commercially available BPPs as a laboratory exercise for undergraduate students to form a correct understanding of the actual anaerobic degradation performance of BPPs, establish a more comprehensive theoretical knowledge framework of catabolism in biochemistry course, and train their hands-on ability and operation skills. This paper provides an introduction to the experimental design and teaching process of the anaerobic degradation of BPPs, and the results show that the degradation degree and rate are closely related to the components of BPPs. The results of the quizzes and questionnaires show that teaching reform is not only beneficial for deepening students' impression and understanding of anaerobic catabolism from ubiquitous BPPs in everyday life but also helpful for promoting their environmental awareness by selecting and using BPPs with better degradability. This teaching reform offers references and guidance for the teaching practice in courses like biochemistry, environmental microbiology, environmental chemistry, and waste treatment.

This paper shows how the leading Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in the UI GreenMetric World University Ranking communicate their environmental sustainability policies through their websites. Specifically, this paper analyses the presence of sustainability-related sustainable development goals on the websites of the top 100 universities in the UI GreenMetric World University Ranking (2021). In the area of university social responsibility, sustainability is less commonly communicated, hence the need to delve deeper into the presence of these messages, carrying out a descriptive study using content analysis as a form of data extraction. The conclusion is that neither position in the ranking nor geographic area are decisive for developing better communication about sustainability. In terms of content, sustainability features on the websites are in three key dimensions of the communication of HEIs worldwide ("Climate change, Efficiency of sustainable cities and communities and Striving for peace and justice"). Thus, the areas for improvement are around the positioning of this sustainability-related content on their home pages, improving location and format (especially video). Moreover, reinforcing reputational messages, through plans or programmes, as well as improving engagement working on the multi-directionality to other social media, is required.

The mental health needs of K-12 students have grown significantly in recent years, necessitating innovative approaches to support their emotional, psychological, and social well-being. This article explores integrating Ecodaemonia, a nature-based framework, into school counseling programs. We provide a guide for developing, implementing, and evaluating nature-based interventions, covering program creation, professional training, collaboration, tailoring interventions, and effectiveness evaluation. The potential benefits of incorporating nature-based interventions include improved attention and cognitive functioning, stress reduction, fostering a deep connection with nature, and promoting students' mental health and overall educational experience.

Angola is one of the countries at the bottom of the ranking in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Creating sustainable businesses can accelerate the achievement of the SDGs. The present study analyses the antecedents of sustainability-oriented entrepreneurial intention (SOEI) among Angolan higher education students. It starts from the relationships established by the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) that were adapted to the sustainable strand. New possible behavioural antecedents of SOEI were added. The Partial Least Square method was applied to a sample of 308 Angolan higher education students. The results show that the TPB dimensions can be adapted and used as antecedents of SOEI and that the TPB can be extended, comprising new antecedents of SOEI also related to individuals' behaviours such as risk-taking propensity, internal locus of control, creativity and proactivity. These unknown antecedents can be taught, learned and stimulated, with universities, policymakers and organisations playing a pivotal role.

This research aimed to develop a green school training manual for high school students in Pracharat Wittaya Serm School with an efficiency index at a rate of 80/80. The scores of knowledge, attitudes, and participation of the research participants gauged before and after the training were compared. The simple random sampling method was used to recruit a group of 54 student samples from Pracharat Wittayaserm School in the first semester of the academic year 2021. The research instruments consisted of The Green School Training Manual, The Knowledge Testing Form, The Attitude Testing Form, and The Participation Testing Form. The statistics used in the data analysis were frequency, Percentage, mean, standard deviation, and paired t-test. It was found that the efficiency of the training manual was 80.45/82.60, and the efficiency Index (E.I.) was 0.5840. These statistics indicate that the students had a 58.40 percent of knowledge progression. It was also observed that the average post-test scores of knowledge, skills, and environmental management participation were higher than the pre-tests scores with the significance at the level of 0.05.

As the sustainable fashion movement gains momentum, there is a growing need to introduce such concepts to the next generation of fashion designer. One approach to produce sustainable designs is upcycling, defined as the salvage and reuse of discarded or found items into new products. This study examines a pedagogical approach for engaging 2nd year undergraduate textile and fashion design students in sustainable fashion design practice. Working in groups, students are challenged to upcycle old clothing into a little black dress, using a keyword as direction for concept, design development, and garment construction techniques. To elevate value in post-consumer textile waste, it is necessary to develop high-quality contemporary design outcomes. This teaching approach aims to encourage the revaluation of recyclable resources, the exploration of the creative potential of fabric manipulation techniques, experimental design development, and professional production techniques. This is achieved through the implementation of a design brief that establishes original approaches to upcycling, contrary to the arbitrary processes that are typically used.

Effective, e-learning environments include a diverse range of pedagogical practices and should focus on active-learning and student-centered pedagogy. Therefore, it should not be the delivery medium, but rather the instructional methods that facilitate proper learning. Courses that incorporate effective instructional methods will support better learning than courses that do not use effective methods, regardless of the mode of delivery. We compared a traditionally taught face-to-face conservation biology course, Biol 4244/5244, for Biology majors to a fully online asynchronous e-learning course designed using essentially the same materials but varying course delivery. The Biol 4244/5244 course is designated by the University of North Carolina at Charlotte as a "writing-intensive course," where communication is a significant part of the course learning experience. We found no significant differences in learning outcomes, regardless of the method of course delivery. Overall, we feel that this study indicates that online instruction in this type of writing-intensive and evolution-based course is a viable alternative to face-to-face instruction.

The study aims to assess the effectiveness of a pop-up story-based program in fostering environmental awareness and sustainability among first-grade elementary students. Using a quasi-experimental design, the study included experimental and control groups, each consisting of 56 students, randomly assigned to two groups: 28 in the experimental group and 28 in the control group. The experimental group participated in a 12-session program on environmental awareness and sustainability. After confirming the test's validity, reliability, and appropriate difficulty and discrimination indices, both groups took a pictorial test covering four key concepts: water and air pollution, recycling, sustainable agriculture, and manufacturing. The results showed statistically significant differences at the 0.05 level between the post-test scores of the control and experimental groups regarding environmental awareness and sustainability concepts, in favor of the experimental group. This demonstrates the effectiveness of the pop-up story-based program in enhancing environmental awareness and sustainability concepts among first-grade students. The study recommends integrating environmental awareness and sustainability topics into teacher training programs at education colleges.

Purpose: Increasing the need for education for sustainable development in universities requires an understanding of the predictors of students' environmental concern (EC). In this paper, the authors focus on the EC of business students because of their future responsibility for business operations regarding the exploitation of natural resources. The aim of the study is to examine the predictors of business students' environmental concern. Design/methodology/approach: Based on the Norm Activation Model as the theoretical framework, this study hypothesizes the model of EC with two main predictors: ascription of responsibility for the environment (AOR), driven by locus of control and self-efficacy (LC/SE), and awareness of positive consequences of consumption reduction on the environment (AOC), driven by perceived environmental knowledge. Structural equation modelling was applied to confirm the conceptual model based on the responses of business students from six countries (Czech Republic, Croatia, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia and Spain) collected through an online survey. Findings: The environmental concern of business students is predicted both by the ascription of responsibility and by awareness of consequences; however, the ascription of responsibility is a stronger predictor of EC. A strong impact was found for internal locus of control and self-efficacy on AOR, as well as a weaker influence of perceived environmental knowledge on AOC. Originality/value: Sustainability education dedicated to business students should provide environmental knowledge and strengthen their internal locus of control and self-efficacy in an environmental context.

This paper reflects on the ecofeminist educational implications of research findings about Australia's Knitting Nannas' Against Gas and Greed (a.k.a. The Nannas') experiences of peer-to-peer, environmental activist learning. Aspects of this unique and successful suite of informal learning practices devised by the Nannas guided by their Nannafesto, and named as Nannagogy, are drawn on to explore the matter of informal ecofeminist education with older women. Drawing on a materialist ecofeminist perspective and learning from older women's activism in overcoming ageist sexism, we argue for the recognition of an emergent learning space we call 'ecofeminist geragogy'. As women age, and the matters of climate disruption and species extinction grow ever more severe, informal learning for transformation (or otherwise) emerges as space rich for research investigation.

This article presents the assessment of two educational secondhand clothing markets developed at two high schools in Albacete. One of them involved money and the other was based on barter, and both included an awareness-raising phase to promote responsible consumption. Although all students were involved, only those who organized the experience were surveyed (N = 40, 21 females). Data were gathered after the experience, in student´s regular classrooms. A qualitative methodology was used, combining focus groups and an open-ended questionnaire. Findings were similar in both groups: the experience was positively perceived, although there was an initial stigmatized preconception surrounding secondhand clothing; it also helped students learn and become aware of the environmental impact of clothing, making them reflect on their consumption habits and change them. Students also perceived some barriers to reducing their consumption. Thus, secondhand markets can be powerful educational tools to raise awareness and change behaviors toward more pro-sustainable choices.

Partnerships between K-12 educators and people doing climate work in their communities provides opportunities for teachers and students to engage in consequential climate learning that is both culturally situated and locally relevant. This article features several vignettes that highlight examples from various sites across Washington State where science education leaders seeded and cultivated climate learning programs in partnerships with local experts in forestry, ecology, farming, food waste, technology, and environmental justice. Collectively the vignettes offer a diverse image of the "boundary spanning" (Goodrich et al. 2020) and commitments needed to ground climate learning in communities.

A key responsibility of academic scholarship is to further develop the field under investigation and to critically evaluate how it is responding to challenges from both inside and outside of the field of enquiry. This article offers an overview of whether the scholarship published in geography education (GE) from the perspective of the Commission for Geography Education (CGE) Springer book series is sufficiently engaging with contemporary global challenges and education discourses. Guided by the 2022 IGU-CGE Rennes Conference's three axes: curriculum renewal, pedagogy and teacher training, the article discusses the findings of a meta-analysis of the six books published in the CGE Springer series in the past five years (2017 to 2021). The thematic analysis shows that GE is engaging with global realities of environment and sustainability, climate change, globalisation and the importance of powerful knowledge for understanding and engaging with complex, often controversial issues. But there are also gaps and absences in terms of who is producing knowledge and from where knowledge is being generated. We contend that the book series is well placed to support the community in addressing global concerns and the related transformative pedagogies needed to enact them. However, we also suggest that the publications at this point in time have yet to fully grasp the specifics needed for the challenges that lie ahead. Some preliminary considerations for advancing the field through future publications are offered. These may be useful to GE researchers and scholars in different regions of the world.

Contributions: This article explores the impact of environmental education interventions about e-waste recycling and management practices as well as about the energy usage of data centers (DCs) into the Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) university curricula. Intended Outcomes: An education program was implemented aiming to raise awareness about energy conservation, attitudinal disposition, and e-waste management practices of ICT students in a Greek University. Methodology: The results were derived from the processing of two questionnaires (pretest and post-test data), which were distributed during two lectures on sustainability and green information technology at a two-week interval. Findings: The findings of the study prove that although the majority of the ICT students had a deficient level of knowledge of e-waste recycling and energy usage in DCs, they showed a significant increment of knowledge and awareness regarding them. Moreover, it was observed that the direct effect of the educational intervention on the intention of the students to engage in e-waste recycling was significant. The research also revealed that ICT students showed a positive perception and attitude toward e-waste recycling and recognized the positive financial effect of the proper e-waste recycling and management after the educational intervention.

Purpose: This study aims to identify and analyze research that promotes sustainable consumption among university students, understand what areas of consumption were addressed, how consumption was intended to become more sustainable and what results were reported. Design/methodology/approach: A systematic literature review was conducted using the Scopus and Web of Science databases and the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses methodology. Main criteria for inclusion were focus on changing the consumption behavior of university students, not just diagnosing them, and that students were directly involved in the efforts. Findings: A total of 1,619 articles were extracted, and 34 were included in the study. These selected investigations conducted between 2012 and 2022 focused on areas of consumption such as food, plastic waste, fashion, energy and water. Sustainable consumption was promoted through training programs ranging from one-hour seminars to full-semester courses, marketing and communication campaigns and direct experimentation and interventions. Most articles reported positive results. Research limitations/implications: This study is limited to research carried out to reduce current consumption by university students; it does not include research aimed at improving students' professional skills for promoting sustainable consumption. Practical implications: This study compiles previous research on reducing consumption by university students in a structured manner according to the consumption area, applied strategy and the results obtained. Originality/value: This research is unique and will serve as a source of inspiration and consultation for academics and university managers concerned about human consumption. It presents successful projects and strategies that can be implemented in their own universities to make their students' consumption more sustainable.

The evolving role of academic libraries in fostering sustainable communities, particularly through climate change literacy, has gained prominence recently. A questionnaire study with 203 academic library staff in Jordan highlighted these libraries' significant role in advancing Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The findings underline libraries as key facilitators of climate literacy, stressing the need for diverse strategies in today's socio-academic context. Libraries are urged to enhance their collections for greater inclusivity, provide extensive climate-related staff training, and focus on sustainable operations to demonstrate environmental commitment. The study advocates for targeted outreach, the use of advanced digital tools, and embracing a global mindset that respects linguistic and cultural diversity. To effectively promote climate change literacy, libraries require strategic planning, deeper user engagement, capacity building, and a dedicated effort to enhance climate literacy.

This paper describes a methodological review of over 2,000 picturebook descriptions and 60 picturebooks published within five-and-a-half years relating to diversity, the environment, social justice, and environmental justice portrayals. The authors asked in particular: To what extent is environmental justice portrayed in recent picturebooks, and how might these portrayals be problematized to understand better and share children's literature? The data revealed that picturebooks portray social and cultural diversity more than environmental topics, and environmental justice portrayals comprise about 3% of the picturebooks surveyed. Picturebooks portraying environmental justice are new, and what is considered environmental justice is expanding. The authors also suggest an expanded notion of environmental justice called Stewarding and Relational Justice. These books incorporate themes of kindness and inclusive action toward each other and the earth, which build toward understanding and depictions of environmental justice. Lastly, the authors provide a curated list of recommended environmental justice and earth-centric books.

The aim of this article is to conduct a systematic review of articles on climate change in religious education found through scholarly databases. Five database searches have been conducted, resulting in 49 academic journal articles. The results are categorized into studies that focus on theory and methodology, observations of existing practices, and quantitative studies on climate change. The key findings include the recognition of an environmental crisis and the cultivation of hope regarding climate change. It demonstrates that religious education can play a crucial role in schools by addressing climate anxiety and fostering hope for a brighter future.

Education for Sustainability (EfS) seeks to empower children with knowledge, skills, values, and attitudes to address global challenges while adhering to sustainability principles. This study investigates the conceptual understanding and pedagogical practices of EfS among early childhood education (ECE) teachers in Norway. Using mixed-methods design, data were collected through reflection notes, surveys, and didactic development projects, revealing fragmented understanding primarily focused on action-oriented, fact-based, and normative aspects of sustainability. The teachers emphasised waste sorting, recycling, and nature experiences, with limited attention to holistic and pluralistic perspectives. Despite curriculum mandates, sustainability had low implementation in ECE educational plans and collaboration meetings. The findings highlight the need for comprehensive teacher education and support to promote EfS and foster agents for sustainability in the context of ECE.

This paper began with the assumption that the habitual practices of knowledge-creation, which have shaped the day-to-day contexts of teachers and researchers, are not greatly different from the practices that have led to human-made catastrophes in the Anthropocene. I pondered over my experiences as a researcher in an attempt to gain insights for thinking about and engaging in knowledge-creation differently to become more response-able in the Anthropocene. Inspired by post-qualitative research practice, I re-turned, like an earthworm, (to) two research events. A theoretical framework informed by critical posthumanism and feminist new materialism guided the process. Through these re-turns, I came to understand that creating knowledge is a complex and indeterminate process that always accompanies the 'more-than'. Attending to the notion of knowledge-ing, I discussed the ways in which knowledge emerged as a flow that was neither fully graspable nor static through more-than-human intra-actions. What I propose in this paper is not a methodological technique, but rather, a mode of practice that might disrupt our sense of Cartesian self. I offered some suggestions for teachers and researchers to reimagine the practices of knowledge-creation as a way of reinventing their subjectivity and responding to the damaged earth more responsibly.

Understanding attitudes towards anthropogenic disturbances, especially among undergraduates, is important to inform educational practices because of the theoretical link between attitude and behavior. We evaluated the attitudes of undergraduate students in a biology majors course and nonmajors course toward two anthropogenic disturbances: wildfire and urbanization. Student attitudes were assessed via an online Wildfire and Urbanization Attitude survey (WUAS) before and after a video intervention, randomly delivered as either fact- or emotion-based versions. Student beliefs regarding wildfire and urbanization were positively correlated with their general intention to act toward environmental issues on both pre- and postintervention surveys, as suggested by theory. Student belief that urbanization was bad for the environment increased from pre- to postintervention. However, beliefs and intention to act did not statistically differ between majors/nonmajors or intervention video type. This study hints that brief interventions can impact student disturbance beliefs, but more research is needed to guide curriculum development. Despite some research suggesting the value of emotion to inspire climate action, our results suggest that more work needs to be done regarding the value of emotion to increase environmental action toward other anthropogenic disturbances.

Unsustainable palm oil production is having a devastating impact on biodiversity in producing countries in Southeast Asia. Certification schemes for sustainable palm oil have the potential to reduce these impacts. The ubiquity of palm oil in processed foods found in supermarkets is a challenge that requires intervention at the policy level and with consumers through increasing public knowledge of the problem and awareness of sustainable alternatives. Zoos are increasingly demonstrating their role in increasing awareness of multifaceted conservation issues across a range of audiences. This paper describes the evaluation of a repeat-engagement outreach programme on palm oil delivered to 7-11 year old children in UK schools by zoo educators. We conducted a mixed-method study using before-after control-treatment surveys to examine the relationship between programme participation and participants' knowledge of palm oil, sustainability, and awareness of sustainable alternatives. The analysis indicated improvements in participants' understanding of palm oil as a conservation issue, and knowledge of how and where to identify sustainable palm oil in consumer products. The analysis also indicated a smaller improvement in participants' understanding of sustainability. We discuss these findings in the context of zoo-led conservation education, and its potential role in Target-16 of the post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework.

This narrative review is the first to focus on how young people themselves express their experiences of participation in ecological restoration projects, as a guide to creating projects that engage them effectively. It gathers 10 qualitative and mixed-method studies that document young people's experiences through observations, interviews, focus groups, drawings, narratives and other methods, in order to investigate two questions: (1) How do young people experience engagement with the land and changes in the land during restoration activities? (2) How do they experience the social dimension of interacting with other people during restoration work? Two types of restoration work emerged, and their results are compared: the creation of biodiverse habitats on school grounds, and enhancements to community lands beyond school. Themes that recurred at different sites are summarized, and implications are suggested for teachers and community partners, as well as researchers who want to explore this topic further.

Citizen science, community science, and related participatory approaches to scientific research and monitoring are increasingly used by environmental educators and conservation practitioners to achieve environmental education (EE) goals. However, evidence of EE learning outcomes from these approaches are typically reported on a case-by-case basis, if at all. We undertook a systematic review of empirical studies in which community and citizen science (CCS) projects lead to EE outcomes. We surfaced 100 studies that met our inclusion criteria using a broad definition of CCS and empirical research on EE outcomes. The studies involved people in a wide variety of aspects of environmental research that included, but also went beyond, data collection. We found CCS approaches to EE overall resulted in positive learning outcomes for adults and youth, particularly gains for science content knowledge (56 articles), science inquiry skills (32), positive attitudes toward science and the environment (16), and self-efficacy toward science and the environment (11). We also found evidence for positive gains in environmental behavior and stewardship (29) and community connectedness and cooperation outcomes (30). These findings highlight how CCS programs may be uniquely impactful when involving people in planning, data analysis, and reporting aspects of environmental research and monitoring, as well as in data collection, and we offer examples and suggestions for CCS design. We found a heavy reliance on self-reporting in the research methods used in many studies, however, and so offer suggestions for more rigorous methods and directions for future research.

This paper documents historical and contemporary evidence of the HPE field's honouring Indigenous ways of knowing, being and doing -- and argues that much more needs to be done. Underpinning this is our philosophical belief that honouring Indigenous knowledges ultimately contributes to planetary health. We begin the paper with the positioning of ourselves within the context of this work. Extrapolating this, we introduce our particular contexts, to help convey the complexity of socio-historical and political influences. Following this, we document a series of events in our field of HPE that convey working towards honouring Indigenous knowledges and illustrate examples of Indigenous ways in educational institutions. The final section introduces the other papers of this special issue. The issue captures a moment in time where practices associated with racism, specifically towards First Peoples, at systemic, institutional, embodied and epistemic levels, are being challenged and countered, yet still require further dismantling. We regard the movement towards obligations of not just acknowledging, but also engaging with and for First Peoples, as still not strong enough to claim our field is inclusive or honouring. Such movements signal important opportunities not just for HPE curricula, but also for the pedagogies, topics, partnerships and research for planetary health more widely.

This study aims to determine the effect of the geographical inquiry learning model with the SETS approach on complex problem-solving abilities. The hypothesis in this study consists of H0 (There is no difference in the effect of the geographical inquiry learning model with the SETS approach on the students' CPS abilities) and H1 (There is a difference in the effect of the geographical inquiry learning model with the SETS approach on the students' CPS abilities). The research used quasiexperimental research with a pre-posttest control group design and Independent Sample T-Test from the results of the N-Gain Score as data analysis. The population in this study was the Class XI Social Sciences in high school level in the odd semester of the 2021/2022 academic year at MAN Kota Batu, Indonesia, using a purposive sampling technique. The research subjects consisted of 70 students (35 students in the experimental group and 35 in the control group). The research was carried out in the study of Geography, with the subject matter of Environmental Impact Analysis. The results of the Sig (2-tailed) showed a score of 0.000 < 0.05. The experimental class had an average score of 85.06 for CPS abilities, higher than the control class's 71.2. According to the findings, the geographical inquiry learning model with the SETS approach greatly impacts CPS abilities. This research proves that the geographical inquiry learning model with the SETS approach positively affects complex problem-solving abilities following the 21st-century learning objectives.

The study aimed to assess the students' extent of knowledge and identify their perspectives towards biodiversity and its protection and conservation. A total of 268 randomly selected students at Aurora State College of Technology were involved in the study. Survey questionnaires were used to obtain data and information which were subjected to statistical tests. The students had a moderate knowledge level on biodiversity with a mean score of 6.65 out of 10 items (SD = 1.50). Their perspective on biodiversity was leaning toward its protection and conservation, with a mean score of 7.2 out of 10 items (SD = 1.29). Factors affecting the students' knowledge were gender (p =0 .003) and academic department (p = 0.003). Females and those associated with the Department of Forestry and Environmental Sciences and Department of Industrial technology were found to have more knowledge than the others. Males, on the other hand, were found to have more positive perspectives towards biodiversity. Knowledge and perspective had a weak correlation with r = 0.39. Students were not well-aware, but were in support of the Philippines' biodiversity-related laws, which could help shape their mindset and actions towards biodiversity conservation and protection. Thus, the college administration must revisit the curricula of all degree programs and ensure that students from each degree program are environmentally educated, emphasizing biodiversity conservation.

The Planetary Health (PH) approach addresses health risks resulting from anthropogenic climate change. It offers an integrative understanding of nature, whereby humans and their health are regarded as part of nature, and individual concerns are situated in relation to the interactions between society and the environment. However, this approach has not yet been incorporated into educational practice. Thus, this article presents the potential of PH for secondary educational measures from the perspective of Geography. Using the concept of system competence, this contribution illustrates how PH can be integrated into the established concept of Education for Sustainable Development. While previous concepts in the context of climate change have focused on mitigation, the examples presented are dedicated to adaptation.

This study investigated the direct and indirect effects of learning styles, ethics education, and ethical climate on student's ethical behavior. The samples were obtained through a proportionate random sampling technique so that 273 students had taken the courses of conservation education, professional ethics for teachers, and business ethics. The data were collected using questionnaires and analyzed using path analysis. The research findings showed that learning styles and ethical education could directly influence ethical behavior. At the same time, the ethical climate did not have a direct influence on ethical behavior. The ethical climate could not mediate the effect of learning styles and ethics education on ethical behavior. It means that learning styles and ethical education contribute significantly to the formation of good behavior and student's characters. It is supporting a learning styles approach suggests that it offers benefit to students.

This chapter explores how learning to be in relation is core to human learning. Reductive views of cultural variation and individualized conceptualizations of thriving overlook the processes through which human beings learn to live relationally in ways that support systems transformation and collective well-being. Synthesizing literature on learning and development, we provide a conceptual model that examines four interrelated dimensions of relationality: (a) embodiment, mobilities, attention, and place; (b) affect, awe, and emotion; (c) pedagogical interactions, supports, and participation; and (d) reimagining learning and the disciplines. We argue that attending to relationality in ways that include between-persons + place + more-than-human relations helps conceptualize learning as deeply tied to the ongoing forms of adaptation, ethical relations, and worldmaking required for socio-ecological well-being.

The illegal wildlife trade (IWT) is a serious issue that threatens many species worldwide. Zoos and aquariums are in a prime position to educate visitors about this issue and work to reduce the impact of IWT. This article describes the work of four zoos across the United States that tested different ways to engage with visitors and broader communities regarding the topic of IWT. While each zoo used unique techniques to engage with the public, the authors identified common lessons learned that are relevant to all informal learning institutions interested in messaging complex topics to their audiences. The authors describe three commonalities that should be considered in the development of educational tools and messages: semantics and word choices, message framing, and the need for cultural sensitivity and respect when discussing challenging topics.

Biodiversity education, as part of a broader environmental education is an important topic, not only for politicians, journalists but also teachers. In the educational context, it is now recognized that students have to be taught biodiversity, its conservation and how to use it in a durable. In this paper, we are interested in assessing how biodiversity, as part of environmental education, is understood and presented in compulsory education textbooks in the French-speaking part of Switzerland. We performed a lexicographic analysis on IRaMuTeQ on the programs of natural science and of humanities and social sciences on all levels of education in compulsory education in the French-speaking part of Switzerland. Results show that biodiversity is at the heart of the program. Moreover, the program promotes a scientific approach but also emphasizes the importance of interdisciplinarity by including terms from geography, history, etc.: the environment is widely mentioned, and the impact of human behavior is addressed, notably regarding resource and energy consumption. This analysis shows that the program adopts a holistic vision of the concept of the living, integrating scientific as well as environmental aspects.

Calls for a common environmental education (EE) vision imply imposing certain values as universal. Nevertheless, there is a lack of knowledge on the extent to which EE reflects universalities versus diverse sociocultural realities. We explored practitioners' perspectives on the purpose of EE by interviewing practitioners in Finland and Madagascar using a theory of change approach. We classified EE goals into eight categories following the framework of Clark et al. (2020). We found signs of universal patterns, with commonalities such as the importance of the cognitive domain and de-emphasis of sociocultural aspects. Yet, differences arise: the connection to nature was central in Finland, whereas economic and bridging strategies were more common in Madagascar. Our results reflect the tradition of EE in post-industrial countries and suggest the influence of the colonial legacy and Western epistemologies in Madagascar. Questions remain about the extent to which those differences are culturally grounded.

The purpose of this exploratory study was to investigate Brazilian school teacher attitudes and approaches to biodiversity education. We aim to specifically compare the amount of native biodiversity topics as measured by teachers' reports of their teaching emphasis. The study involved 147 teachers from all geographic regions of the country, who answered a questionnaire containing both open- and Likert scale items to compare biodiversity-related contents. Findings reveal that the concepts with the greatest emphasis from teachers are those related to environmental conservation, while the least emphasised concepts are those about Brazilian biodiversity. This seems to lead to a paradox, since conservation-effective actions depend on the place-consciousness of biodiversity. Analysis of responses revealed the following common factors that negatively affect the teaching of native biodiversity: lack of knowledge about local biota; the absence of adequate teaching materials; curriculum geared towards preparing students for national tests; excess of curricular content; and valuation of a macro/general view of biodiversity concepts rather than a native/local view. The implications of our results are important for the training of biology teachers, to improve initial and continued teacher education programmes about native biodiversity.

Invasive species pose a threat to biodiversity, and as such feature in some conservation education programs. However, there is debate about how to teach this difficult subject. We explored perspectives using a case study of education about introduced mammalian predators in Aotearoa New Zealand (NZ). We conducted semi-structured interviews with 18 NZ educators and animal welfare advocates and supplemented these data with material from a broader project on predator control in NZ. Our data indicated agreement that education should: 1) encourage respect for all animals, i.e., introduced predators should not be demonized and must be killed humanely; 2) enable children to develop their own opinions, e.g., whether to participate in trapping; and 3) designing programs to suit specific contexts, e.g., rural versus urban. However, there were disagreements, for example at what age children might begin trapping, and whether guiding students toward a particular conclusion is compatible with enabling their agency.

University agricultural educators are challenged to employ innovative approaches to prepare undergraduates in agriculture and natural resources to address complex global problems while understanding interconnected systems. Undergraduates, current members of Generation Z (Gen Z), prefer environmental sustainability and innovation, but solutions for addressing these preferences in educational settings remain elusive. Exploring Gen Z's environmental consumption values and how those values relate to their systems thinking tendencies may provide university educators with insights on how to approach complex topics with Gen Z students. The purpose of this study was to examine the association between Gen Z students' green consumer values and systems thinking tendencies. Data were collected using a web-based survey instrument of 68 undergraduate students at the University of Georgia. Findings revealed respondents somewhat agreed they had green consumer values and respondents often used systems thinking when seeking to make an improvement. A Spearman's rank-order correlation coefficient indicated a positive, yet weak, association between systems thinking tendencies and green consumer values. The association necessitates further exploration. University agricultural educators should incorporate systems thinking educational strategies into classrooms to potentially increase Gen Z students' engagement in systems thinking when addressing complex agricultural issues, like sustainability. Additional implications for systems thinking and teaching are explored.

This paper analyses how lower secondary pupils experience their participation in the Danish science and green entrepreneurship competition, called Edison. The study uses a qualitative research method to investigate pupils' descriptions, in retrospect, on the process of their entrepreneurial work. We completed semi-structured interviews with two teachers and six groups of pupils from two schools. Independence and being able to determine their own product were motivating factors. Often the pupils included other actors, particularly family members, on their own initiative as part of their work. The pupils' interest in STEM education did not appear to have been affected except for two pupils who broadened their educational perspective. However, the awareness of sustainability issues has for some of them been supported, one of them with a change of lifestyle. By including engineering design process models in the analyses, the concept of entrepreneurship in science and technology became more process oriented and operational, which may also help both the teachers' facilitation and the pupils' inventing process.

Throughout the world, Aotearoa-New Zealand is recognised for its extraordinary biodiversity. However, many species that make up this distinctive biodiversity are under threat of extinction due to human impacts, such as the ill-considered introduction of particular animals. Many New Zealanders participate in the protection and restoration of their environment, which involves the lethal control of these introduced animals. Primary school children (5-13 years old) engage in conservation education as part of their learning, which aims to develop their abilities to take informed action to protect and restore our environment, sometimes including lethal control of introduced animals. Recently, concerns have been raised that children learning about the lethal control of introduced animals does not align with the values that should be explored and encouraged according to Aotearoa-New Zealand's national curriculum. We argue that conservation education, including learning about the lethal control of introduced animals, encourages children to explore and encourage these values, namely valuing the diversity in their heritages, ecological sustainability, participation for the common good, equity, innovation, and respect for others.

Guidelines for sustainability linked to the government-approved National Curriculum for education in New Zealand emphasise values of empathy and respect for all life. These instruct educators to discuss different values around sustainability and conservation. I reviewed educational resources published or endorsed by government agencies to determine compliance with these sustainability Guidelines. The resources reviewed promote the view that non-native mammals should be killed. Some resources go further in giving instructions to children on how to do this, and how to source kill traps. Children are provided with material designed to engender dislike towards non-native mammals, particularly possums. Resources conflate issues of conservation by tying it in with protection of tourism, ornamental plants and primary industries. This encouragement of killing in environmental educational resources appears unique to New Zealand. It is discussed in light of increasing evidence that performing or witnessing animal abuse is a causal factor for future violence towards human and non-human animals.

Without any intervention, Malaysia will be among the heaviest users of energy per capita in Asia. One strategy to reduce energy intensity is by educating future adults. Unfortunately, ineffective approaches due to unclear baseline understanding of students' energy conservation awareness contribute to the failure of environmental protection programmes. In this study, questionnaire was used to investigate the awareness level of secondary school students on energy conservation, with socio-demographic profile as an independent variable. Three secondary schools in Malaysia were selected based on different recognition types, namely; a High Performance School, Cluster School and an ordinary Daily School. The findings (N = 927) revealed a low level of knowledge among the students from all types of school with acceptable level of positive attitude and practice towards energy conservation. These findings serve as a wake-up call to implement a comprehensive energy policy and a new environmental education curriculum with community participation.

In this manuscript we present a critical analysis of the current pandemic moment, shifting the SARS-CoV-2 virus to the role of teacher, thus reflecting on possible learnings from the reality in which we are inserted. This perspective is located within the new materialism, in which we consider the agency of the more-than-human world. To do so, we revisit data from our previous research that demonstrate how occupying and frequenting urban green areas are fundamental to human formation and relationships. We discuss the implications of the restrictions experienced during the pandemic, in the political, ethical, and aesthetic context of Brazil and point out the importance of environmental education in the reconstruction of the post-pandemic world and the need to incorporate ethical and aesthetic values into educational experiences.
