This study was undertaken to highlight the best English teaching method in Katsina state secondary schools by comparing communicative method (CLT) against traditional method (GTM) to ascertain the best approach for teaching Grammar, vocabulary, written composition, oral composition, and oral English. The study population comprised all 2023/2024 SS2 students of public secondary schools in Katsina State. It deploys experimental design which involved gathering quantitative data from the students’ post-tests to assess their mastery of these language skills. In order to analyze the collected data, the researchers utilized the SPSS (IBM Statistical Processor Version 25) for precise and efficient processing, generating various necessary outputs to draw meaningful conclusions. Based on the findings, with the exception of teaching grammar which revealed no significant difference as the p-value was.003 which is below .05, CLT proved to be more impactful compared to traditional method in teaching the other four subjects. To this end, the researchers recommend the full implementation of CLT method at Senior Secondary Schools in Katsina State. Similarly, it is suggested that CLT and GTM should be blended in teaching grammar in order to help students to learn the grammatical structures of English and use them in a meaningful and engaging way.

This study was conducted to understand issues related to the current practice of English teacher education development in the Lao People's Democratic Republic with a focus on reading. It recognizes that what pre-service teachers experience both prior to and during their teacher education are important and need to be understood if the goals of teacher education are to be achieved. Previous research found that pre-service teachers' prior experiences of both reading and learning to read were mostly a matter of learning discrete language items rather than developing comprehension and critical reading, and that these experiences had shaped perceptions about how reading is taught. This study extends this understanding by investigating reading-related pedagogy on a teacher education programme. Its findings highlight a gap between an education policy that promotes communicative language teaching and classroom practice. The higher education landscape is continually evolving, with educators adapting to meet the needs, aspirations, and expectations of their students. Data technology and virtual-learning systems have become vital components in higher education operations, with many institutions incorporating online frameworks and innovations. The aims of the study to evaluate the effectiveness of Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) using university platforms for online teaching and learning in Indonesia and Malaysia, focusing on students' perspectives. The research utilizes the CIPP, which stands for Context, Input, Process, and Product appraisal framework proposed by Stufflebeam (Journal of Research and Development in Education, 5, 19-25, 1971). The study includes all students who take English as their subject in the English Department Program, as well as English lecturers. The stratified random sampling approach was employed for data collection. Qualitative data gathered through interviews with educators from both institutions, while written papers provide additional insights. For quantitative data, a modified questionnaire with 63 items divided into six sections and five score scales were disseminated online through the Survey123 program. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyze the questionnaire results. Smart-PLS was utilized for barrier element analysis, using PLS-SEM for causal predictive analysis and consideration of reflective and formative factors. Figure 1 presents the conceptual model, illustrating the connections between exogenous and endogenous latent components in the study. Littlewood’s early stance on the use of students’ first language (L1) in the foreign language (L2) classroom was that maximum use of the target language (TL) enhances language acquisition. He suggested that this precept has been pervasive in every communicatively-oriented language teaching method and has also been widely accepted in official curricula in a range of contexts due to an understanding that TL use should be normative in classroom interactions. A strong rationale for advocating this ‘monolingual principle’ has been that, for many students, the L2 classroom provides the only opportunity to be exposed to the TL. Littlewood and Yu (2011. First language and target language in the foreign language classroom. Language Teaching 44, no. 1: 64–77) recognised, however, that teachers and students do make use of students’ L1 in L2 classrooms and suggested several ways in which teachers might do this legitimately. Furthermore, Littlewood (e.g. 2014. Communication-oriented language teaching: where are we now? Where do we go from here? Language Teaching 47, no. 3: 349–362) conceded that exclusive TL use has become subject to active questioning in recent years. The phenomenon of translanguaging takes arguments that support L1 use beyond Littlewood’s earlier suggestions. There are also implications for TBLT where extensive L2/TL use is the default position but where translanguaging practices are not necessarily at odds with the central task construct. Many Filipinos have found employment in the English as a Foreign Language (EFL) online tutoring industry. The EFL online tutoring extends beyond the traditional academic mainstream, becoming a dynamic and personalized avenue for language learning. This paper aimed to fill the research gaps surfaced by the dearth of research in online learning, where there are limited known teaching and assessment strategies used to deliver EFL tutoring classes. It specifically sought to identify the effectiveness and adaptability of communicative language teaching strategies to cater to the language needs of EFL learners. The participants were tutors of Chinese, Japanese, and Vietnamese learners. Through a phenomenological qualitative inquiry, this study subsequently gathered data through a semi-structured interview with eight priori codes as a research instrument. On the other hand, tutoring class observations also corroborated the parallel validation of interview data. The data further analyzed using cool, warm, and thematic analyses. The directives of themes explicated in this study were delineated by the emerging Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) approach by Richards and Schmidt as conceptual framework, other prevalent strategies were also reiterated. In a nutshell, the participants' perspectives highlighted the effective utilization of language activities in all instructional and evaluative aspects. These are the use of authentic materials as a push for authenticity, opinion sharing, role-playing, information gap activities, information transfer activities, mechanical practice in language familiarization, meaningful practice by giving prompt feedback, language task, and project work. Consequently, the constraints revolved around language barrier, technological barrier, short attention span, and validity of assessments involved. The objective of this study is to evaluate and enhance the effectiveness of Communicative Language Teaching in the context of CEFR-based English language learning. The population consisted of students from State Junior High School (SMPN) 8 in Jambi. The samples were collected using convenience sampling. A total of 32 students participated in this study. This investigation utilized a quantitative research approach with a pre-experimental design. The CEFR Test was utilized as an assessment tool for data collection. Three primary methodologies were employed in this investigation. The study consisted of pre-test, treatment procedures, and post-test assessments. The pretest was administered to assess the students' proficiency in spoken English according to the CEFR standard. Subsequently, the researchers administered eight rounds of treatments utilizing Communicative Language Teaching. The concluding phase involved administering a post-test to determine if there was any improvement in students’ performance. The researchers analyzed the results of the pre-test and post-test following the implementation of the Communicative Language Teaching treatment in CEFR-based English learning. The two-tailed significance value obtained from the calculation of the paired samples t-test was 0.017, which is less than the significance level of 0.05. The value of this computation can be interpreted as the progressive improvement in student performance resulting from the implementation of Communicative Language Teaching in CEFR-based English education.

The study aims to examine the effectiveness of traditional methods for developing English as a Second Language (L2) writing. None of the studies has focused on L2 writing errors comparing the effectiveness of English language teaching methods in the classrooms. However, the current study investigates the efficacy of Grammar translation (GT) and communicative language teaching (CLT) methods in minimizing first language (L1) transfer errors in (L2) writing for 12th grade students in senior secondary public schools. The study included 180 participants randomly. The participants were divided into four groups: two experimental groups were exposed to GT and CLT methods, and two control groups were treated based on their regular curriculum in Hindi and English medium schools for three weeks. The data was extracted from participants over pre and post-test and analyzed quantitatively. The results of this study indicate students made more L1 transfer errors in Hindi Medium Schools in comparison to the English medium in L2 writing. Furthermore, students made a lesser mean of errors for the post-test rather than the pre-test. Moreover, the GT method performed better in Hindi and English medium classrooms than the CLT method in terms of minimizing L1 transfer errors after attending their pre-designed classes. This study evaluated students' interest in English for specific purposes (ESP) and the obstacles in effective learning based on Richards' Communicative Language teaching theory (2006) and the principles of language teaching and learning. The research used both qualitative (interviews and discussions) and quantitative (survey) methods. The research team used a 4-level Likert Scale survey to collect information from 45 undergraduate, students. The results showed that although the majority of students are interested in ESP, factors such as reluctance to practice, lack of appropriate facilities and class sizes affect the teaching and learning process. This qualitative research study aims at exploring the perspectives and practices of EFL graduate student-teachers on Communicative Language Teaching applied to their teaching contexts. The Institute of Foreign Language (IFL) of the Royal University of Phnom Penh (RUPP) was selected, and 5 MA in TESOL students were recruited to participate in the study, 4 males and 1 female, working as a teacher. All 5 participants were interviewed based on the principal questions of CLT, adapted from Larsen-Freeman and Anderson (2011), through phone-calling and Zoom when it was the time of the Covid- 19 outbreaks. The findings showed that the perspectives of the participants on CLT include cooperative teaching, language function, communicative competence development, authentic material, and fulfilling the students' needs. In addition, CLT was implemented to put the students into real practice, EFL teacher as the facilitator and students as the practitioner, employing interactive learning between teacher-student and students-students within the evaluation and the error correction. The study was an investigation of tertiary classroom student presenters’ use of language, gesture, positioning and movement in the lesson. Teaching and learning in the classroom is a multi-semiotic experience and the current study provides the insights into their distinct pedagogies. Raised comprehension of semiotization and resemiotization has multiplied the responsibilities of both teachers and students. 12 teachers and 320 student presenters’ use of semiotic resources at tertiary level had been investigated quantitatively and qualitatively through thematic analysis. The semiotic resources of language, gesture and the use of space through the positioning and movement of teachers and students have been discussed in relation to the pedagogy they realise, which require insinuations in teaching and learning both.

This paper attempts to explore Slovak EFL learners’ perceptions of the fundamental principles of communicative approach, which has been employed as the primary way of teaching foreign languages for the past five decades. Research participants were formed by 111 Slovak university EFL leaners – teacher trainees (n = 111), who were asked to demonstrate their level of agreement to the statements concerning communicative language teaching by responding to a 5-point Likert scale questionnaire. The calculated means indicate that overall, the research participants are in agreement with the selected principles of CLT as they agreed with 16 out of the 18 chosen statements. However, they appear to be neutral about two aspects of CLT, the use of native language at EFL lessons and discovering and investigating grammatical rules by learners themselves. Arising out of the research results, the conclusions are drawn, and pedagogical implications are discussed.

Abstract: This case study explores the dynamics of the English as a Foreign Language (EFL) speaking self-concept of a female university student. The study focuses on the participant’s internal and external frames of reference ( MERCER, 2011b) to analyze how her EFL speaking self-concept has been constructed throughout her years of English language instruction, and how it is re-constructed and developed in the current course. Findings show that such self-concept originates from beliefs systems, emotions, learner characteristics, previous English language learning context/method, critical experiences and experiences of success/failure using the oral language. Results indicate that critical positive experiences and perceived experiences of success appear to influence positively the learner’s self-efficacy beliefs and emotional experiences about the oral task.

Over the decades, the reform and opening-up policy of the 1970s has pushed China to become increasingly connected to the world, leading to a growing demand for foreign exchange. The need for English language talents has promoted the transformation of teaching methods and reforms to the national curriculum. In the early 1980s, Communicative Language Teaching was introduced into the EFL setting in Chinese English classes. However, there is minimal time to practice speaking and communicating, and researchers have debated its applicability in China. This study aims to explore the effectiveness of Communicative Language Teaching in English grammar teaching in three public secondary schools; the current teaching environment affects its application, and the constraints that may prevent teachers from using it. Through semi-structured interviews, qualitative thematic data were collected from five English teachers working in three cities in Henan province. The results show that the uneven distribution of teachers between the capital city (Zhengzhou) and the other two prefecture-level cities (Xinmi and Xinxiang), the difference in the textbooks used, and the disparity in the English proficiency of the students led to five teachers’ different views on the feasibility of CLT. The findings will provide pedagogical insights for Chinese English teachers and contribute to the government’s efforts to improve Chinese public secondary schools’ teaching and learning environment. The Communicative Approach is believed to be the most successful current foreign or second language teaching method. Because of the need for development, using the Communicative Approach in the EFL classrooms in Albania, and incorporating it into the curriculum design is extremely beneficial, but establishing a climate conducive to the best learning and ensuring the desired results is quite complex and time consuming. Students are accustomed to being taught utilizing traditional teaching techniques in the challenging Albanian educational environment. Teachers must, however, move away from conventional approaches and toward more modern ones, such as the Communicative Approach. As a result, the focus will be on the learners' language requirements and assisting instructors in achieving their objectives. However, because more contact and engagement in class can lead to a significant increase in students' conversation time, this practice necessitates the use of effective classroom management measures. The purpose of this research is to see how the Communicative Approach may help students improve their communication skills. It addresses some of the issues and provides recommendations for successful application within the Albanian curriculum. Furthermore, it is hoped that the Communicative Approach would not only be presented as a positive approach regarding teaching and learning process, but that it will also equip educators and curriculum developers with some practical methods and processes for putting Communicative Language Teaching into practice. While Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) is recognised as an effective approach worldwide, its implementation in foreign language (FL) classrooms remains difficult. Earlier studies have identified factors impeding CLT implementation, such as a lack of communicative lesson materials or teachers' more traditional views on language learning. In the Netherlands, CLT goals have been formulated at the national level, but are not always reflected in daily FL teaching and assessment practice. As constructive alignment between learning goals, classroom activities and assessments is a precondition for effective teaching, it is important to gain a deeper understanding of the degree of alignment in Dutch FL curricula and the factors influencing it. The current study therefore aims to take a systematic inventory of classroom practices regarding the translation of national CLT goals into learning activities and assessments. Findings revealed that teaching activities and classroom assessments predominantly focused on grammar knowledge and vocabulary out of context and, to a lesser extent, on reading skills. External factors, such as teaching and testing materials available, and conceptual factors, such as teachers' conceptions of language learning, were identified to contribute to the observed lack of alignment. There has been a gradual change in Korean English curricula and education systems over recent decades to enhance the ability to communicate in English confidently in an increasingly globalized society. The Korean government has been initiating new policies in English curricula to improve the quality of English education in state schools; accordingly, English teacher education has also been intensified, with more attention to teaching speaking. Therefore, there is a need to investigate the impact of teacher preparation on classroom practice through empirical research considering Korean educational contexts. This study explores pre-service English teachers' learning through initial teaching practice in the area of teaching speaking in Korea, which has seen major policy changes in recent years but has had limited empirical investigation. Two pre-service English teachers' perceptions and practices of teaching speaking are examined, from the perspectives of influences on, and changes in their cognition. Data include classroom observations, semi-structured interviews in sequence, documents, and qualitative questionnaires. The overall findings show limited impact of the practicum on their cognition development, and incongruence between their cognitions and practices of teaching speaking due to the gap between theory and practice. Literature has long been used as a tool for language teaching and learning. In the New Academic Structure in Hong Kong, it has become an important element in the senior secondary English language curriculum to promote communicative language teaching (CLT) with a process-oriented approach. However, as in many other English as a second or foreign language (ESL/EFL) contexts where high-stakes testing prevails, Hong Kong students are highly exam-oriented and expect teachers to teach to the test. Because there is no direct assessment on literature in the English language curriculum, many teachers find it challenging to balance CLT through literature and exam preparation. To address this issue, this article describes an innovation of teaching ESL through songs by 'packaging' it as exam practice to engage exam-oriented students in CLT. A series of activities derived from the song Seasons in the Sun was implemented in the ESL classrooms in a secondary school in Hong Kong. Based on the author's observations and reflections informed by teachers' and students' comments, the students were first motivated, at least instrumentally, by the relevance of the activities to the listening paper in the public exam when they saw the similarities between the classroom tasks and past exam questions. Once the students felt motivated, they were more easily engaged in a variety of CLT activities, which encouraged the use of English for authentic and meaningful communication. English language teachers and educators everywhere try to find better language approaches, methods, theories, techniques, and strategies. One way to do that is by implementing the approaches or practices in their classrooms to see which one works, serves more for their students, or has more impact. These communicative language education techniques have been used for many years in many nations. The main goal of the learners is to reach communicative competence; thus, they continuously search for a method or approach that can significantly impact their communicative competence. Hence, teachers and learners try to use different language approaches and techniques to improve the student's language skills, especially their speaking skills. The main aim of this review article is to investigate the impact of communicative language teaching (CLT) by reviewing five reports and some literature reviews. Kasumi's first article, ' Communicative Language Teaching and Its Impact on Students' Performance," was conducted in 2015. The second article is entitled "The effect of using Communicative Language Teaching on Speaking Ability," which Ratih and Hanafi undertook in 2016. The third article is entitled "The Effect of Using Communicative Language Teaching on Developing English Speaking and Listening Skills of Iranian Secondary School Students," which Aalaei conducted in 2017. The fourth article, "The Effect of Communicative Activities on Libyan Secondary School Students' Speaking Performance in Malaysia," was conducted by Owen & Razali in 2018. The fifth article, "The Impact of the Implementation of CLT On Students' Speaking Skills," was led by Mangaleswaran and Aziz in 2019. The findings of these articles indicated that CLT impacts students' communicative competence, especially speaking and other skills such as listening, reading, and writing. This study aims to bridge the gap between 'communicative' and 'plurilingual' approaches, by providing a means for teachers to integrate learners' plurilingual repertoires when teaching an additional language (Lx). We developed a model of crosslinguistic instruction embedded within the task-based language teaching approach. It consists of a 4 stages task sequence: input-based task, crosslinguistic consciousness-raising task, output-based task, and recap of the sequence. An iterative process of field testing and analysis (Harvey & Loiselle, 2009) allowed us to refine the model: researchers in-depth analysis (functional field test), implementation of the model in Lx classrooms (empirical field test) and experts assessment (second functional field test). The role of grammar instruction is inevitably important for second and/or foreign language mastery. Unfortunately, in practice, many English teachers in foreign language contexts such as in Indonesia still teach grammar deductively; that is, learners are provided the grammar rules and examples, are told to memorize them, and then are asked to apply the rules to other examples. This particular method of teaching is believed to produce learners who cannot use the language communicatively although they have considerable knowledge of grammar rules. It has also been seen as contributing to learners’ passive participation and negative feelings towards grammar learning. The aims of this paper are to give an alternative solution to that problem by offering some ideas of game-based activities and to investigate students’ perception of the implementation of communicative game-based grammar learning. Using pre- and post-study questionnaire, the research study was conducted with 30 adult EFL learners taking an after-class English course. The findings indicated that these activities were effective in creating a non-threatening and more relaxing grammar classes, changing students’ negative perception of grammar learning and improving their perceived communicative skills.

The discipline of Applied Cognitive Linguistics is a recent, still emerging framework, which is situated at the interface of Cognitive Linguistics (CL) and Applied Linguistics research (Pütz, Niemeier & Dirven 2001a, 2001b). At its core, Applied CL is concerned with the use of CL models, theories, or concepts for L2 teaching and learning, where it aims to create effective teaching methods, activities, or materials. Owing to its more recent origin in the 1990s/2000s, a lively metadisciplinary discussion is still taking place within the discipline, which highlights various challenges or concerns that Applied CL research is currently facing (e.g., Achard & Niemeier 2004; Pütz 2010; Roche 2014; Tyler & Huang 2018). Major concerns in this discussion are, for instance, (1) the underuse of empirical data in Applied CL research and (2) the yet limited application of CL theories to Communicative Language Teaching (as opposed to Present-Practice-Produce, in which it is typically embedded). This article outlines these two challenges to research in Applied CL and offers suggestions how to address these concerns in future investigations. The entrance exams to Japanese universities have long been criticised for creating negative "washback" on English education in high schools in Japan, as teachers have often focused their teaching efforts on teaching grammar to prepare students for these exams rather than helping students to develop competency in spoken English. Many government initiatives have attempted to reform English language education by encouraging a greater focus on speaking competency. This paper outlines the nature of the Japanese university entrance exam system, considers the phenomenon of washback, and critically reviews the body of empirical research related to washback in the Japanese context. A systematic review was conducted on articles published between 1993 and June, 2022. These articles were subjected to thematic analysis in which four broad categories were identified: learner behaviour; washback to teacher behaviour; affective factors; and washback specifically from the introduction of the listening test. Findings suggest that more empirical studies are required to understand the complex nature of washback from university entrance exams, and that future research is required to examine potential washback from four-skills testing and, in particular, from the inclusion of a speaking test. This study employed communicative language education to assist a subset of a public school in Tondo, Manila, Philippines, especially the Junior High School Grade 7 students, in improving their Englishspeaking abilities. The researchers used the Direct Teaching Method to conduct a teaching and learning process (Pre-test). The students were then given a speaking test. Following the pre-test, the researchers started the teaching-learning process by teaching Communicative Language. After two months of using the communicative language education strategy, the researcher repeated the speaking test (posttest). Compiling the data and calculating the speaking test scores. The following statistical instruments were applied to the data collected for analysis and interpretation: t-Test: Two-Sample Assuming Equal Variances, Weighted Mean, Frequency and Percent Distribution, Standard Deviation, One-Way ANOVA [Single Factor], and the findings of the pre-test and post-test show a considerable improvement in the selected students' speaking ability. Task-based learning is excellent for cultivating language ability because it allows students to participate in natural conversation. The task-based approach gives learners a natural setting in which to utilize language. There are several opportunities for interaction while students try to finish an assignment. A high-stake standardized test (e.g., TOEFL, TOEIC, and IELTS) is one of essential indicators in determining students' English proficiency especially in the context of English as a Second Language (ESL) and English as a Foreign Language (EFL). Direct test preparation method is prevalent in test preparation course; however, negative washback could occur. Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) can be effective teaching method which can diminish the negative washback and also increase both proficiency and test score. The purposes of this study were 1) to examine the effect of CLT on students' TOEIC score and 2) to explore students' attitude towards the use CLT in test preparation course. The sample was 68 Business English students selected by purposive sampling divided into experimental group and control group. The instruments were pre-test, the official TOEIC score and semi-structured interview. The data were analysed by using mean, standard deviation, t-test and content analysis. The results revealed that the official TOEIC score of the experimental group was significantly higher than the control group which indicated that CLT in test preparation course yielded a positive effect on improving students' TOEIC score.
