The article examines the existing infrastructure of open common spaces within two New Belgrade mass housing blocks (Blocks 23 and 70a) through a typo-morphological analysis. These spaces between the buildings, although the most neglected, underused, and deteriorated components of mass housing neighbourhoods, are at the same time crucial to the quality, vitality and integrated governance of these neighbourhoods. They represent the primary tangible commons in cities and neighbourhoods. The question of urban commons is increasingly present in scientific literature, urban and architectural discourse. Nevertheless, approaches exploring the spatiality of the urban commons are scarce, leading to insufficient understanding of the spatial aspect and potentials of the already existing commons. Therefore, this study includes (1) identification, typological decoding and classification of the common spaces, focusing on the case of New Belgrade blocks, followed by (2) analysis of the spatial patterns and integration of the identified spaces within the blocks. The study confirms the complexity and diverse typology of the common spaces. It finds that the in-between, common spaces contribute to higher integration of different segments of the blocks. The open common spaces have an essential role in humanisation of the blocks, and thus the quality of life in the blocks as integrated neighbourhoods. The findings indicate that the spatial setting of the open common spaces in New Belgrade blocks allows for (re)emergence of collective practices, leading to inclusive and integrated rehabilitation of the neighbourhoods.

- Abstract
Many households aged 55 and older with a desire to move encounter a lack of suitable housing on the Dutch housing market. Various households that have a desire to move, cannot find a dwelling that meets their desires in their desired location. This hinders their ability to realize their housing preferences and forms an impediment to the residential mobility on the Dutch housing market. Improving the residential mobility of households aged 55 and older has the biggest potential herein, which in turn contributes to the residential mobility of other households. It is therefore important in the housing provision to develop new housing that suits the desires of households aged 55 and older. This study therefore aims to gain insight into the housing preferences of households aged 55 and older in the Netherlands. Herein included, this study explores the extent of interest and preferences with regard to housing types that stimulate social interaction, which are being encouraged in the housing provision in the Netherlands. Through a secondary analysis of the WoON 2021 datafile, a better understanding of the group of people aged 55 and older is gained through exploration of the sociodemographic and socioeconomic characteristics and the characteristics of the current dwelling. Subsequently, the housing preferences are explored of moving-inclined households in WoON. As the moving inclination of households can be influenced by the current possibilities on the housing market, the study explores the extent to which households aged 55 and older would have a desire to move if an attractive dwelling that meets their desires would be present, through a digital survey. This study subsequently gains insight into the housing preferences of this group of people and explores the extent of interest with regard to housing types that are to stimulate social interaction, comprising homes with common spaces. This study shows that a notable share of people aged 55 and older would have a desire t, Architecture, Urbanism and Building Sciences | Management in the Built Environment

Landscape architecture focuses on studying and designing indoor and outdoor environments. It entails the elements of architecture, art, engineering, and other sociological factors. Accordingly, the landscape architects design the spaces buildings that give life to the structures. Landscape architecture is visible in parks, streets, shared paths, plazas. Shopping malls, apartment compounds, transport networks, and gardens are also examples of landscape architecture. Furthermore, the works of landscape architecture are also visible in museums, memorials, cemeteries, universities, and other schools. Modern architects have designed different permanent structures that will stand for a long period of time. Notwithstanding the preceding, the discourse on what qualifies as landscape architecture and what does not is yet to be settled. This discussion elucidates the process of research through design in landscape architecture, the literature regarding the field, and conducts a case study of specific landscape architecture to elicit applicability of the enumerated concepts. Moreover, the discourse also reveals the research method utilized in the case study and the results as well and discussion.

The concepts of collective management of housing and urban spaces are being revisited within the contemporary discussions about community-driven approaches and practices and, in particular, related to the revitalization of residential neighbourhoods. This research identifies the concepts of self-management and social ownership of housing in the post-World War II period in Yugoslavia as an important legacy of Yugoslav urban planning and housing policies. Although they were subsequently neglected, these concepts can contribute to contemporary global discussions about housing affordability and the role of community in ensuring spatial and social equality. New Belgrade mass housing blocks—the main site for testing the new dwelling concepts, in terms of both policies and modernist design—are the object of this research. The article is mainly a theoretical analysis of the issues of common interest and engagement, common good, and common spaces which played a decisive role in its design. The study applies interpretative and correlational research methods in re-theorizing these concepts and their underlying narratives. It traces how the perspectives on the collective practices and spaces evolved over time, revealing a correlation between changed social practices and the spatial deterioration of the New Belgrade mass housing blocks. The study highlights the importance of both collective practices and common spaces for addressing housing issues, emphasizing their instrumentality, and potentiality for rearticulating the dialogue between public and private, engaging citizens in interactive and inclusive decision-making and co-creation of the urban reality.

The debate on common spaces inside buildings is linked to twentieth-century forms of popular housing, often devoid of places and opportunities to share a space which is conceived as fragmented and not collective. In recent years, an interest in the appropriation of urban space from the bottom up and the unanimous recognition of the need for places to meet within (or annexed to) buildings, have led to the definition of these 'intermediate spaces' as an essential part of living together. Compared to these common spaces, early modern houses pose an essential question: how was proximity within buildings structured, prior to the birth of intimacy? The well-known different perception of promiscuity, in fact, allowed a different structuring of collective housing and a physical proximity that coexisted with the strong social distance sanctioned by inequality by birth. To answer this question, the article examines the types of intermediate spaces, called loci comuni – stairs, landings, passages and courtyards – rather well-known in noble residences, much less in the houses of the popular classes. Through sources such as the fund of the Presidenza delle strade, inventories, land registers, notarial deeds of sale of houses and experts' estimations, the article will investigate the uses of these spaces made by their inhabitants.

Adopting the perspective elaborated by Lefebvre and Remy to sociologically study the role played by the built space in collective life, this article problematizes contemporary community architecture as a vector of social inequalities at the level of inhabiting. Relying on documentation, observations and interviews gathered about recent cohousing projects, it first shows that its spatial vocabulary reflects a neoliberal, localist and affinity-based idea of social integration. Then it documents the pragmatical reception of the spaces typical of this architecture by the public concerned. The general idea is that those spaces carry normative prescriptions linked to the opening up of the domestic sphere and voluntary participation, in fact better grasped by more privileged people and favouring the updating of their own standards of inhabiting.

COOPETITION ,PARSIMONIOUS models ,PRICE increases - Abstract
Problem definition: Unoccupied waiting feels longer than it actually is. Service providers operationalize this psychological principle by offering entertainment options in waiting areas. A service cluster with a common space provides firms with an opportunity to cooperate in the investment for providing entertainment options while competing on other service dimensions. Academic/practical relevance: Our paper contributes to the literature by being the first to examine co-opetition in a service setting, in addition to developing a novel model of waiting-area entertainment. It also sheds new light on the emerging practice of service clusters and small-footprint retailing. Methodology: Using a queueing theoretic approach, we develop a parsimonious model of co-opetition in a service cluster with a common space. Results: By comparing the case of co-opetition with two benchmarks (monopoly and duopoly competition), we demonstrate that a service provider that would otherwise be a local monopolist can achieve higher profitability by joining a service cluster and engaging in co-opetition. Achieving such benefits, however, requires a cost-allocation scheme that properly addresses an efficiency-fairness tradeoff—the pursuit of fairness may backfire and lead to even lower profitability than under pure competition. Managerial implications: We show that as much as co-opetition facilitates resource sharing in a service cluster, it heightens price competition. Furthermore, as the intensity of price competition increases, surprisingly, service providers may opt to charge higher service fees, albeit while providing a higher entertainment level. - Abstract
The main aim in this study was to investigate how the active participants of a self-organized and socially mobilizing operation called Santa Croce/Spin Time Labs in Rome, Italy described their work regarding creating an alternative and inclusive common cityspace. Nine semi-structured interviews were conducted with active participants in the Spin Time Labs-part of the organization that is designated to cultural-and service aligned activities. The study uses a primary theoretical framework based on Henri Lefevbre’s ideas regarding ‘The right to the city’ and the production of social space, together with the concept of ‘Parity of participation’, developed by Nancy Fraser, concerning the creation and fulfillment of social justice principles. Furthermore, scientific research regarding commons spaces and self-organization were used to analyze the phenomenon known as "Squatting” through the perspective of occupation as a form of producing alternative cityspaces. The results pointed at a few experiences that could be seen as crucial both connected to participants current work-situation and also concerning the future of the operation. Mainly, it showed that the participants, through their active participation, have managed to create a useful balance of meeting the needs of both the occupations inhabitants and the surrounding neighborhood. At the same time, this very balance has served as a functional alternative strategy for managing to create an inclusive and open common cityspace. Altogether, it shows that with their combined effort, they could create something that potentially could have a long-lasting impact. Both on an individual level, creating a solidary sustainable resource allocation and improving the mental health for the people involved in the operation, as well as for urban society at a broader perspective. Additional research could be focused on finding possible pathways for the operations further management and development in the neoliberal society of today.

Rapid and intrusive spatial adjustments in common spaces are increasingly questioned by the awareness of citizens demanding higher quality standards. This study aims to understand the use of common space by identifying how the sound environment affects the functions of space and the interaction with other environmental and spatial variables. Is there a certain sound environment required or that should be avoided when designing a space for a specific activity? In situ evaluations with regular users were collected in nine common spaces in Gothenburg, Sweden, conducting sound recordings and questionnaires. Site selection responded to the purpose of the analysed places, the noise level (LAeq) of the city road traffic noise map, and the number of activities suggested by the city sociotope maps. The analyses revealed that certain activities could be identified from LAeq values. Discriminant functions with respect to sound levels primarily identified a tranquil/restorative vibrant dimension, where the highest noise levels tend to be at the most vibrant end. Other results showed that a considerable variability of overall and visual quality judgements came from the variability in sites. These quality assessments were highly correlated, allowing both to be analysed as a single attribute. The variability in sound quality was much lower. Notable is the difference between recorded and perceived loudness. In addition, poor sound quality judgement does not seem to correlate with the perception of mechanical sources as the main source of noise. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

[EN] The project is developed in the municipality of Xixona, Alicante, specifically in the upper part of its old town, between the Torre Grossa and the viewpoint. The area is characteristic for its narrow streets and buildings on the hillside. After experiencing the city's urban boom, towards flatter terrain, it has experienced the disadvantages of uninterrupted time passing, aggravating the state of the buildings, without maintenance interventions. Faced with the various existing problems in the historic center of Xixona, this paper focuses on promoting the three aspects that have had a significant impact so far, preventing the powerful growth of the old town: -REGENERATION: The deterioration and abandonment of various buildings gives a disastrous image of the town, not only for visitors, but also for its inhabitants; creating feelings of insecurity, poor health and lack of attention and care for their neighbors. -ACCESSIBILITY: The steep slopes and stairs make vehicle accessibility and easy circulation impossible for the large number of elderly people who continue to live in this area. Adding the daily need to move in order to obtain minimum services. -VISIBILITY: The ignorance that exists in the upper area of Xixona to be able to appreciate its attractive landscape and history. To be able to enjoy spaces, routes and activities in its vicinity, it is a strong point of citizen attraction that could increase the current population. The focus on these points aims to ensure that visitors can appreciate all the possibilities that the historic center has to house new life, show them the community and the good relationship between neighbors to develop and implement new relationships between the elderly residents of the town. with potential families or young people who want to stay, either temporarily or indefinitely. Bring the town and the people who live in it back to life. The tools to achieve the objectives focus on the demolition of infrastructure in a dire state and urban regeneration. After analyzing the state of the buildings and their possible potential, regeneration is focused on one point. The connection center is freed from the mass fabric of the town, creating an open central space around which the rest of the programs are implemented. The new buildings blend in perfectly with the urban landscape of Xixona, housing different uses. The first building includes the residential program, focused on temporary residents, regardless of the length of their stay, condition or number of components. In order to unify the relationships between the new residents and neighbors, the two remaining buildings are created. One develops the most active leisure activities, with a cafeteria and a performance area, a games room and a gym. While the latest construction focuses on relaxation and tranquility activities, a meditation room, a swimming pool and a shed with an urban garden. The development of all the aforementioned activities aims to create a union between the new inhabitants and current residents so that they can enjoy the feeling of belonging to Xixona and want to settle down.

- Abstract
This article is the first approach of an investigation that seeks to understand the discor dance between the design of common spaces of social condominiums and the ways their inhabitants living them. The approach is characterized by two conceptual shifts: firstly, a transit from the isolated consideration of the dwelling to a directed attention of the common spaces and, secondly, from the expert point of view to the consideration of the experience of the inhabitants. Recognizing that housing transformations have been extensively studied, it is intended to generate knowledge regarding the way in which the inhabitants react to anomalies in common spaces, driven socio-spatially stabilizations given by "informal” interventions. Some of these adaptive strategies and the case of a land grab are shown, showing how these strategies are deployed, what resources are mobilized, their repercussions in space and in the patterns of community organization additionally to the possibilities of learning for public policy., Resumen: Este artículo es un primer acercamiento a una investigación en desarrollo que busca com prender la discordancia existente entre el diseño de espacios comunes de condominios sociales y los modos de habitar de sus habitantes actuales.

SOCIAL integration ,URBAN planning ,SOCIAL sustainability - Abstract
Contemporary cities are the centers of urban change, mirroring rapid global societal changes. Whether by armed conflict, economic deprivation, or perceived economic opportunities, people migrate to cities in search of better lives. As a result of upcoming challenges and pressures, urban planners are faced with hard tasks for accommodating the high influx of people while making cities sustainable. The starting point of urban social sustainability is inclusion, followed by equity and urban governance. Dubai is a unique model; it has a large transient expatriate population, and it is in the process of transforming into a global city. In this paper we aimed to understand the relationships between "common spaces" as elements of housing design, social interactions, and social inclusion in two selected community neighborhoods of Dubai. The study has a convergent parallel design, that is, it uses a case study method (observational analysis), quantitative research, and thematic analysis to develop a new paradigm in community neighborhoods designed for the transient population of Dubai. , How do people form themselves in society? As a means to address this question, sociology developed the concept of socialization, and the family has been regarded as a significant institution in this regard. However, previous research based on the nuclear family has overlooked the possibility that parents may be socialized by others through childcare. This article examines how parents change their consciousness and behaviors when living in collective housing and considers the “socialization of parents” and how prevalent conditions infl uence them. In doing so, it reports on the results of a case study of Collective House Kosumosu (hereinafter, Kosumosu) based on data collected during observation and one-on-one interviews with three sets of parents. The study identified four patterns of “the socialization of parents” in Kosumosu: (1) liberation from social norms of childcare and motherhood; (2) relativization and mutual comparison of childcare; (3) acceptance of the imperfectness of parents; and (4) reflexivity of the parental role. Moreover, “the socialization of parents” in Kosumosu becomes possible through the mutual complementarity of the living space (living close to each other in common spaces) and positive social relationships based on refl exivity, equality, cooperation, and trust constructed by self-management. Collective housing presents a unique contemporary style of coexistence in which people with distinct values and lifestyles fi nd a way of living together while recognizing and respecting their differences.

Relations among neighbors are a key indicator of the strength of a local social community, contribute to social cohesion and are an important factor in achieving a higher level of social sustainability. On the other hand, the environment in which people live plays an important role in encouraging social contacts and developing relationships between people. In order to establish social interactions between neighbors within a multifamily apartment building (MFAB), it is necessary to provide adequate spaces for communication between residents. This was especially emphasized during the mobility restrictions caused by COVID-19, although this necessity is permanent. This paper analyzes the influence of the physical characteristics of common spaces in MFABs on the quality and intensity of contacts among residents of MFABs in the City of Niš, Serbia. In order to determine the current quality of these spaces as a physical framework for interactions among residents and to identify the wishes of users regarding interactions with neighbors in these spaces before and during COVID-19 pandemic restrictions, a survey was conducted. The analysis of the survey results and numerous examples of housing design led to (1) the formation of guidelines for future designs of MFABs and (2) recommendations for redefining the standards regulating the field of housing construction in the region, both applicable during the period of the pandemic and after it.

This study explores how common spaces in assisted living schemes for older persons are used by the residents. Observation studies, group interviews with staff and individual interviews with residents, relatives, architects and key stakeholders in the context of Swedish elder-care were conducted. Common spaces are the major location for in-house social interaction on the units. The results show a higher presence on the dementia units, compared to the somatic units. No significant correlation was found between the residents' mobility limitations and their degree of presence in the common spaces. The results also suggest a contradiction between the staff's intentions to provide a social context and the capabilities of the residents. Although common spaces are not used much between meals, the residents stress their importance for social interaction, suggesting that common spaces have important qualitative aspects, rather than quantitative. The results also show that few of the residents used the common spaces together with their relatives. The increasing use of assistive technology creates a shortage of space, suggesting a conflict between the efforts to create a home-like environment and the use of assistive technology. - Abstract
The transition from a city-as-playground, appropriated and lived by children, to children’s withdrawal into playgrounds specifically designed for them during the 20th Century, has been shown in a variety of urban contexts around the world. The current proliferation of children’s playground equipment of similar design and materials in many cities corresponds to a representation of both childhood and the city. This paper adopts an interdisciplinary approach to discuss these representations of childhood and the city, and the interaction between them. With a particular focus on playgrounds in Mexico City, it interrogates their link with the conformation of a global image of childhood. It examines whether the construction of playgrounds aims to enhance children’s play, and whether they still constitute spatial references and territories for contemporary children. It critically addresses the concept of public space to show how it can be used to enhance a neoliberal approach to the city.

[EN] This project consists of a new way of living, a cooperative living between the inhabitants of the building and the surrounding neighbourhood. The Partnership for Modernisation (P4M) launched by Russia and the European Union (EU) in 2010 was expected to promote reform and give renewed momentum to their relationship, develop cooperation on trade, economy and energy security, to support growth and contribute to the global economic recovery. Four years and seven summits after its birth the P4M is established as an institution with a capacity for coordination and governance of priorities and interests, a catalysing effect for advancing investment and a potential to contribute to building the Common Spaces (CSs). But the progress has been uneven. The P4M has not served to help transform the EU--Russia relations into a truly strategic partnership. This article explores different dimensions of the P4M genesis, development and impact on the partners' relations in several steps. First, it briefly introduces Russia's modernisation initiative. Second, it has a look at the expectations of the P4M at its launch. Third, it focuses on the progress the P4M has made so far and its relationship with the EU--Russia CSs by comparing the narratives of both. It explores in particular how the P4M has advanced by sectors and whether it has helped advance or has the potential to advance the EU--Russia CS dialogues. The article concludes with reflections on whether the P4M has had an impact on the EU--Russia strategic partnership. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The goal of the present work was to define and understand the criteria that lead to the formation of indicators in order to understand the variables regarding the right to cohabit common spaces in sustainable conditions. This is a reference of qualifying cities in metropolitan areas based on the theories of habitability, urban competitiveness and new urbanism. In methodological terms, the axes of permeability, variety, robustness, legibility and richness were analyzed. These show the social, economic and environmental dimensions in which the categories of measurement were classified. All are signs of inclusive growth and principles of habitability in favor of urban competitiveness. The results of this study are reflected in the interpretation of those categories that suggests the design of indicators to delimit the meaning and performance of institutional projects and policies. - Abstract
The changing ways of being together: From collective to common spaces in welfare housing Many European versions of the welfare state (such as the Swedish model) included, on their smallest level, an infrastructure of “common spaces” in communal housing estates for tenants to meet, and organize themselves politically. Governmental planning saw them as important to the “democratic citizen”. Common spaces were one element of nationwide spatial and organizational structures to foster biopolitical governing and to reproduce the welfare society. This round table discussion explores common spaces as a spatio-social concept inspired by the commons, as studied by the political economist Elinor Ostrom. We argue that common spaces have been fundamental to the welfare state until its neoliberalization in the early 1990s, and that the divorce of the spatial dimension from the bureaucratic apparatus has contributed to its demise. Elinor Ostrom conducted field studies on how local communities self-organize for managing shared natural resources, and how, over time, economically and ecologically sustainable rules were established. The concept of the commons and the welfare state model agree in some basic ideas but not in all. Both envision provision for the individual’s existential needs within the framework of collective rules, however, Ostrom’s commons depart in one crucial point from the welfare state ideal – her principle of the commons required the exclusion of unentitled parties. Michal Hardt and Jacques Rancière suggest the common as a field of the sensible and perceptible, a field in which political recognition and decision-making takes place. Sensibilities and imaginaries of the common were embedded in the technocracy of the welfare state. Is it possible to regard the early welfare state as a conceptual framework for discussing networks of care for the future? This round table discussion proposes the welfare state model as a laboratory for exploring different modes of, QC 20210614

- Abstract
The Eastern enlargement of the European Union has substantial influence on EU external policy and its relations with non-EU countries, including Russia. In this situation, Russia's main concern is to avoid the creation of new dividing lines after the enlargement. This paper will argue that instead of dividing Europe, the EU enlargement would create a framework for further co-operation and eventually rapprochement between the EU and Russia. Therefore, Russia would be able to benefit from this process. The paper will analyse the consequences of the EU enlargement for Russia and examine the main political concepts determining directions of this rapprochement between the European Union and Russia: New Neighbourhood, Common Spaces and Eastern dimension.

- Abstract
The research involves enhanced use of public school buildings and open spaces. Improvements to school spaces and renewal of learning places will be made through small, dedicated architectural projects. Regeneration projects will take schools’ open and common spaces as their starting point. The modification process will examine the requirements of experimental teaching, evaluate the needs of the scholastic community and observe the specific physical condition of the school structures included in the research. The research, with the collaboration of an inter-disciplinary team, aims to propose guidelines for a change to existing culture within public schools. We intend to promote processes whereby schools are opened to associations undertaking socially relevant programmes, such as parents’ organizations and non-profit organizations. We aim to start processes for the re-use and regeneration of the many abandoned spaces inside schools. We wish to promote updated teaching systems using new innovative models. The main theme of this research is to give physical shape to the Community’s sense of belonging to the school, and to re-define a reciprocal relationship between the school and all those who live in it. A project of architecture which can give a recognizable identity to anonymous spaces. A project that aims to offer new future and achievable perspectives for improvement to locations where social criticalities, nihilism, exclusion, marginalization, and sometimes violence, seem to prevail. The care for spaces, gardens, trees, new play-grounds, canteens, atrium, will reconfigure weak areas as areas in which new shared values are shown. An essential aspect of the architectural project includes the revision of technical components related to shading/sunny spaces, healthiness, security and energy efficiency. The scholastic heritage is re-designed in a qualitative sense through a new process of signifying and regenerating the common spaces by minimal interventions, allowing

- Abstract
Se abordarán algunos aspectos, tales como el derecho a la ciudad, la auto-organización comunitaria, las redes municipales, la alianza público-ONG-comunitario o la densificación de centros, siempre intentando conciliar la cuestión del desarrollo sustentable tanto en términos sociales, como económicos, culturales y ambientales., Understanding cities as interrelated parts of a territory with which we must operate, the general objective of this work would be to propose patterns of adaptation and densification from the existing city that can project alternative scenarios to those of the State and the market, starting from the analysis and reinterpretation of the urban-housing fabric from some examples in Rosario. Thus, from the paradigm of the common and the relational, it’s proposed to make some possible proposals for the design and planning of urban development around the guidelines established by the New Urban Agenda agreed in the Quito agreement in Habitat III in 2016. Some aspects will addressed, such as the right to the city, the community self-organization, the local networks, the public-NGO-community alliance or the densification of centers, always trying to reconcile the issue of sustainable development in social, economic, cultural and environmental terms.
