In this paper, I will analyse slang terms related to different types of drinks in the lyrics of songs and in the French-argot dictionary (with Léon Drouin de Bercy) by famous French singer, writer, and cabaret owner Aristide Bruant (1851-1925). Although their dictionary can be criticised from the point of view of today’s lexicography, its undeniable advantages – such as the number of slang equivalents, the abundance of quotes, etc. – make it an important dictionary of its time. Bruant’s work, including his songs, can be considered as a corpus particularly appealing to linguists interested in the 19th-century Paris slang. According to my hypothesis, this vocabulary can be divided into two groups, namely slang terms for different types of drinks as well as words with various meanings created with the help of semantic processes based on the imagery of drinking. Dans ce travail, nous présenterons la terminologie relative aux boissons dans le langage du chansonnier, écrivain et lexicographe Aristide Bruant (1851-1925) telle qu’on la trouve dans son dictionnaire L’Argot au XXesiècle (1901, avec Léon Drouin de Bercy) et dans les paroles de ses chansons qui constituent un document particulièrement précieux pour ceux intéressés par le français argotique et populaire au tournant des XIXeet XXesiècles. Le dictionnaire de Bruant et de Bercy peut être critiqué à juste titre du point de vue de la lexicographie de notre époque, mais ses points forts indéniables en font un dictionnaire particulièrement important pour son époque, sans oublier qu’avec les textes des chansons il constitue un corpus d’argot ancien d’une valeur inestimable. Selon notre hypothèse, ce lexique comprend, d’une part, les noms argotiques et populaires des différentes boissons et, d’autre part, des éléments lexicaux ayant diverses significations dont on doit la formation – par des procédés sémantiques – à l’imagerie alimentaire relative à la notion de boire.

Lenka Mundevová Translation of Colloquial Language Devices in Fiction: A Century of Maupassant's Ivrogne in Czech Translation Abstract The dissertation compares the stylization of the dialogues in the French original of Maupassant's short story Ivrogne (The Drunkard), written in 1884, with five Czech translations published between 1902 and 1997. The comparative analysis is focused on the devices of colloquial language, including dialect, which appear frequently in the dialogues of the story and prove to be extraordinarily useful when interpreting Maupassant's text. The analysis of the excerpted material is preceded by the description of the basic characteristics of colloquial French and Czech, followed by the description of their stratifications. The mutual relation of the colloquial language varieties is an important prerequisite for the evaluation of the translations of colloquial language devices and their appropriateness in the individual Czech versions of Ivrogne. The paper also deals with the development of Czech aesthetic translation standards and their relation to the standard of local fiction, outlining the important tendencies of Czech fiction translation applied when colloquial devices were conveyed from French to Czech during the specified timeframe. This paper sets out to contribute to the debate on the morpho-syntactic status of phonologically weak or clitic subject pronouns in Colloquial French by discussing finite impersonal constructions in which the expletive subject pronoun is non-expressed. The paper provides arguments against an approach in terms of inflectional affixes, showing that the non-expression of this pronoun is in fact syntactically restricted. On the basis of the further finding that the non-expression of the expletive represents the continuation of a grammatical trait of older stages of the language in which the non-expression of subject pronouns was generally possible, a tentative proposal is put forward which crucially draws on information structure.

International audience; Cet article propose une description de quelques traits syntaxiques particuliers observés dans des corpus en français enregistrés auprès de collégiens de la ville de Cayenne. Les caractéristiques observées concernent a) des variations au niveau de la morphologie verbale, b) des variations concernant la forme des pronoms clitiques objet voire c) l'absence de certaines reprises pronominales. Après avoir décrit ces variations, l'article pose la question de l'influence du contact de langues dans l'apparition de ces phénomènes - et en particulier de l'influence de la syntaxe des créoles guyanais et haïtien sur la syntaxe des énoncés produits en français. En effet, la majeure partie des locuteurs enregistrés parle ces langues en plus du français. Adoptant une approche panlectale de la variation du français, on se demandera alors si certaines observations n'attestent pas - plutôt ou également - de tendances évolutives générales du français parlé.

En Côte-d’Ivoire et au Burkina Faso notamment, la présence au plan culturel du français populaire est fort comparable à celle du pidgin anglais au Nigeria ou au Ghana. Cependant, si dans la zone anglophone le pidgin est une langue littéraire reconnue, dans la zone francophone cela n’est pas le cas. La problématique de mon texte repose sur ce paradoxe. Les explications se situent, entre autres, aux niveaux historiques et de la représentation du français par les acteurs littéraires tant de la métropole que des ex-pays colonisés. Doit-on continuer à ignorer cette langue, désormais élément incontournable du tissu culturel africain francophone moderne ? Il semble important et urgent de donner au français populaire son statut littéraire si l’on veut une littérature qui réponde à la définition africaine de l’art, qui soit démocratique et en harmonie avec son milieu, c’est-à-dire authentique. Ce choix constituerait, en outre, une ouverture certaine vers une littérature en langues africaines. Colloquial French in the Arts in French-speaking Africa : The Paradoxes of an Existence. -- In the Ivory Coast and Burkina Faso, colloquial French (français populaire) is quite comparable with pidgin English in Nigeria or Ghana. Although the latter is a recognized literary language in English-speaking lands, such is not the case for the former in French-speaking ones. Explanations for this paradox lie in history and in the way literary circles in ex-colonies and in the colonizing country conceive of French. Should we continue paying no heed to colloquial French, even though it is now an unescapable part of modern culture in French-speaking Africa? It is high time to recognize the literary status of colloquial French if we want to see a literature emerge that corresponds to the African definition of art, that is democratic and harmonious with its environment that is authentic. This would also represent an opening toward a literature in African languages.
