Religion has been associated with human values and competencies needed to shape young people into responsible citizens able to make a positive difference in the lives of others. However, this correlation remains dependent on the context. As the correlation has not yet been investigated in Mauritius, which is a multicultural and multi-ethnic country, this study aims to bridge this knowledge gap using a purely positivist epistemological approach. It will analyze the Mauritius-specific data derived from a public data set which was part of the "Mapping the Terrain" project to examine the correlation between religion and a broad set of human values and competencies, namely forgiveness, individualistic orientation, collectivistic orientation, self-efficacy, problem-solving, meaning-making, sense of belongingness, religiosity/spirituality, hope, life satisfaction, gratitude, emotion, regulation, empathy, and self-regulation. The descriptive analysis and the Structural Equation Model (SEM), developed using the SPSS and AMOS software, revealed that (i) independent of ethnic group, educational stakeholders in Mauritius have a high affinity to most of the human values and competences, and (ii) as compared with others, the Muslim community has a slightly lower affinity to forgiveness, life satisfaction, individualistic orientation, self-efficacy, and problem solving. These data, which represent important baseline information needed to inform policymakers and other educational stakeholders, were used to derive a set of recommendations that will further the development of the key human values and competencies needed to promote harmony in a multicultural and multi-ethnic country.

While prior research has examined the connection between civic engagement and collectivist views, the present study considers to what extent years of education have been associated with more collectivistic views. This study analyzed data from the 2021 United States General Social Survey. Results suggested that more years of education was associated with believing that the government should do more for Black people and that the government should do move overall (in a scaled average of individualism/collectivism). Specific demographic factors were associated with more collectivist or individualistic views. Implications for program and policy development within higher education are considered.

This instrumental case study (Stake, 1995) explores the external factors that influence international science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) postdoctoral scholars in the United States to pursue a career in STEM. Interviews with 20 international STEM postdoctoral scholars were analyzed deductively to shed light on their unique backgrounds and experiences. Three themes emerged: (a) parents were highly encouraging, (b) a love of science was nurtured in school, and (c) they were eager to engage in and promote scientific innovation. These findings illustrate the ways in which family, schools, and community influence the STEM career trajectories of international postdoctoral scholars.

This conceptual paper explores the integration of "Ubuntu" philosophy in the school social work practice in South Africa, suggesting a transformative framework to enhance social work practice in a school setting based on the principles of interconnectedness, compassion and community. Drawing from critical social work theories, cultural humility, and restorative justice, the study explores the potential benefits of incorporating "Ubuntu" in addressing the diverse needs of students. Using a narrative literature review methodology, EBSCOhost and Google Scholar search engines were utilised to retrieve scientific literature. The study underscores the importance of cultural competence, community engagement, and restorative practices in shaping interventions. Significantly, the study contributes to a growing body of literature on culturally responsive social work practices, providing insights that can inform transformative approaches to school social work in South Africa and potentially beyond.

Background: Parents are often involved in their child's homework with the goal of improving their child's academic achievement. However, mixed findings were observed for the role of parental involvement in homework in shaping students' learning outcomes. Aims: The present study examined whether and how the effect of parental involvement in homework on students' performance in science and math varies across sociocultural contexts by considering the degrees of societal collectivism-individualism. Methods: The present study used a large-scale dataset, consisting of participants from 43 countries/regions, to test whether societal collectivism-individualism would moderate the relationship between three types of parental involvement (asking, helping and checking) in homework and elementary school students' academic performance in math and science. Results: The multi-level analyses revealed diverse effects of different parental involvement behaviours for homework. Helping and checking behaviours were generally negatively associated with elementary school students' academic achievement, but asking behaviours were positively associated with their academic achievement. Importantly, the positive effect of asking behaviours was stronger, while the negative effect of helping behaviours was weaker in collectivistic societies than in individualistic societies. Conclusions: The present study highlights the importance of considering the multifaceted nature of parental homework involvement and the sociocultural contexts that vary in collectivism-individualism when evaluating the role of parents in elementary school students' learning in math and science.

The relationship between self-concept and academic achievement that is commonly cited has primarily been found in studies of students from Western countries with individualistic societies. Thus, this relationship may not be evident among students from non-Western countries, which are thought to largely adopt collectivist cultural values and behaviors that are inconsistent with the way that students from individualist nations perceive and evaluate their academic functioning. This lack of clarity motivates the present scoping review about the relationship between self-concept and academic achievement among students from collectivist countries who study in elementary, secondary, and post-secondary schools. A final review of 27 empirical articles involving student populations across educational levels and from several collectivist countries provided support for the same general relationship between self-concept and academic achievement that has been found in Western countries. Accordingly, the development of a favorable self-concept was associated with greater academic achievement. In some cases, this relationship was dependent on self-concept and academic achievement being measured in the context of a school-related discipline and on the time interval between the examination of both variables. Our findings provide insight into pathways to academic success that are effective across cultures, and we offer considerations for successful academic self-concept interventions for collectivist students.

Building queer allyship is an in-the-making, incomplete, and situated process in and beyond TESOL. In this article, I propose that the concept of "queer allyship" is not a conceptual but practical and calling-for-action approach on an everyday life basis. Queer "a"llyship describes allies who work together to challenge "c"ommon heteronormative and cisgender assumptions of oneself to "t"hink queer and provoke actions in relational "s"ystems of support (ACTS). In this article, I invite the readers to think queer with me about the missing aspect of queer allyship in TESOL, address the importance of doing this work, and offer some queer considerations for teachers and administrators to try in their own spaces. I conclude the article by acknowledging two things. One, everyone can queer their own thinking and actions; therefore, everyone can be queers themselves. Two, doing queer allyship work should not be the sole responsibility of anyone -- it is ecological work, which demands collective and communal care "for and with" all students and teachers.

The Re-membering Blackness Digital Archive at the University of Scranton shares the university's racial story as part of a campus-wide initiative devoted to reconciliation and collective memory. By bringing together archival records on Black history in a thematic digital collection, the project presents a corrective lens through which the university community transformed its understanding of the historical Black experience on campus and considered how this history reverberates in the present. The initiative contributes to a growing collection of institutional research projects on African American history and the legacies of slavery and racism in higher education. This article considers the metaphor of archives as memory within critical archival literature, and it examines the relationship between archives and collective memory in the context of the University of Scranton's initiative to recover Black memory.

Brazilian writer Carolina Maria de Jesus (1914-1977) was born in a rural community and spent most of her life in a slum. Despite this, her literary work achieved remarkable editorial success, having its value recognized by critics and academic circles. This paper analyzes Carolina Maria de Jesus's autobiographical narratives in the light of John Dewey's aesthetic theory, with the purpose of investigating the factors responsible for the development of her aesthetic sensitivity -- intellectual and emotional dispositions favorable to involvement with artistic practices. The results suggest that Carolina Maria de Jesus's literary skills, which express not only individual but also collective yearnings, resulted from the incentive she received to think about things that do not exist and from her relationship with people who favored the formation of a personality open to varied experiences. Such results are presented as requirements for a democratic and humanist education that aims at the flowering of aesthetic sensitivity and encourages educators and students to believe in their creative potential.

Families play a central role in EI services for young children with disabilities (Division for Early Childhood [DEC], 2014). Family coaching in early childhood is a core piece to providing services for young children with disabilities and their families (Rush & Shelden, 2011). It is an identified best practice method of service delivery that embodies the family-centered model and increases family capacity (DEC, 2014). Despite evidence demonstrating the positive outcomes of caregiver and family coaching (Lorio et al., 2020), literature on coaching and family involvement within a cultural framework is limited. One group of interest is the Latino community. When it comes to encountering large systems, such as education or health care, Latino families often report feeling unequal in their partnerships with their children's service team (Ramirez, 2003), signaling a significant cultural gap and lack of responsive services. Family culture, beliefs, language, and practice affect how they interact with their children and accept and participate in EI services (Mitter et al., 2019). Daily routines and activities, along with developmental expectations, vary widely across cultures. Yet much of the extant research on autism and early childhood is primarily done with White children and families (DuBay et al., 2018), leaving gaps on how best to support families from a variety of different cultures and linguistic makeups. This article will outline the concept for a three-part coaching approach that leverages the strengths and needs of the Latino population, as derived from the literature on family-centered practice, evidence-based practices, and the core values of the Latino culture.

Higher education administrators, faculty, and staff across diverse institutional contexts grapple with college students' persisting and increasing mental health concerns. Further, recent research has discussed mental health challenges Black collegians encounter, exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Mental health issues among Black college students vary based on several factors (e.g., institutional type, ethnicity, gender, and sexuality). Research has demonstrated the various mental health trepidations Black men navigate at institutional campuses. Informed by a collective impact framework, we explored how higher education institutional stakeholders can collaboratively labor to drive solutions for promoting Black college men's mental health and well-being. This article begins by broadly reviewing the literature on Black men's mental health in and outside collegiate settings. Next, we discussed the collective impact framework and how it can aid in expanding and advancing transformative mental health programs and services for Black college men. This article concluded with implications for future practices and programmatic considerations within collegiate environments.

Studies on learning strategies across cultures in higher education inform the internationalisation of teaching and learning. Previous comparisons relied on geographical generalisations (e.g., "Asian", "Western", "Latin-American") or only variable-centred methods, which can overgeneralise the contexts they represent. Eight learning strategy datasets (ILS; Inventory of Learning patterns of Students) from seven countries (n = 4883) were obtained and (re-)analysed using variable-centred and person-centred (Latent Profile Analysis; LPA) methods. Employing Hofstede's individualism-collectivism and power distance indices as predictors, lower individualism and higher power distance scores corresponded to students' overall combined reporting of meaning-directed, reproduction-directed and application-directed learning strategies. Furthermore, sample LPAs found that less individualistic contexts presented profiles with similar shape (i.e., profiles differed by similar amounts across most learning strategies). More individualistic contexts presented profiles with different shapes (i.e., different profiles preferred different strategies). Multiple "Western" contexts presented profiles that describe the "Asian" and "Latin-American" learner stereotypes. These results question the existence of such stereotypes and point to the usefulness of cultural indicators for making cross-cultural learning strategy comparisons. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed.

A gradual transition from a collectivist to a more individualist identity has been noted in the Arab minority with implications for teachers' well-being and organizational citizenship behavior. This study builds on the Job Demands-Control model to investigate the mediating role of teacher organizational commitment in the relationship between the teacher collective involvement in decision making to teacher well-being and organizational citizenship behavior. Data were collected from a sample of 350 teachers randomly chosen in the Arab educational system in Israel. Structural equation modeling (using the AMOS 21.0 program) was used to test the proposed relationships. The results indicate both a direct and indirect relationships (through the mediating role of teacher organizational commitment) of teacher collective involvement in decision making on teachers' well-being and organizational citizenship behavior. The model which tested both direct and indirect relationships (through organizational commitment) between collective involvement in decision making and teachers' organizational citizenship behavior, and well-being, showed good fit indices (x[superscript 2] = 62.60; x[superscript 2]/df = 2.50; CFI = 0.947, TLI = 0.905, IFI = 0.949; RMSEA = 0.066). Specifically, the bootstrapping analysis reaffirmed the mediating role of organizational commitment between collective involvement in decision making and well-being ([beta] = -0.04, p < 0.001) and organizational citizenship behavior ([beta] = 0.11, p < 0.001). Implications for theory and practice are discussed.

Bootleg innovation is a common phenomenon in Chinese universities. However, little is known about its influencing factors and mechanisms. Based on the trait activation theory, the current study proposes and tests a moderated mediation model by conducting an online survey of 1,038 university teachers at four undergraduate universities using convenient sampling. The findings suggest that the influence of individualistic orientation on bootleg innovation is greater than that of collectivism. Individualism has less influence on informal organizational norms than collectivism. Such norms play a partial mediating role between individualism/collectivism orientation and bootleg innovation behavior. Environmental uncertainty positively moderates the entire mediation model of individualistic orientation but not the first half of the path of the collectivist model. This study enriches the research on antecedent variables of bootleg innovation behavior and highlights the important role of situational factors in the entire mechanism.

This paper reports the results of a qualitative study that used in-depth interviews to understand the experiences and perceptions of six pre-service teachers as they engaged in microteaching at a tertiary institution in Hong Kong. Using a framework grounded in dialogism and positioning theory, the study describes the ways in which different discourses offer, as well as deny, positions to the pre-service teachers as they planned and implemented microlessons. The results suggest that competition between these discourses to position pre-service teachers can result in microteaching being associated with negative emotional experiences, such as disappointment, isolation, and frustration. This emotional dissonance is shown to lead some preservice teachers to question the efficacy of microteaching. The paper therefore argues that it is imperative for teacher educators to support pre-service teachers' engagement in microteaching by revealing the presence of these discourses and by exploring how the latter can exercise agency by accepting, resisting, or rejecting the positions made available to them during their microteaching experience. Suggestions for future research are also considered.

Baima Tibetan folk songs are an integral part of the Baima Tibetan music culture. They are performed in diverse styles, including solo, duet, lead singing, round singing, and chorus. The objective of the study was to explore the significance of Baima Tibetan folk songs as a resource for literacy education in Chinese music history. By engaging with key informants divided into three groups -- scholar informants, casual informants, and general informants. The result of this study reveals that ritual music holds deep roots in religious beliefs and is performed during sacrificial ceremonies, marriage ceremonies, and funeral ceremonies. Dance music culture reflects the collective nature and community cohesion of the Baima people, with dances like the fire circle dance serving as prominent expressions. Folk songs encompass a wide range of themes, including labor, wine, wedding, and love, showcasing the diverse musical expressions within Baima Tibetan society. The unique rituals, dances, and songs of the Baima people contribute significantly to the preservation and celebration of their rich cultural heritage. This study highlights the educational potential of Baima Tibetan folk songs as valuable resources for promoting literacy and understanding in the context of Chinese music history.

Multicontext theory offers an approach to designing learning experiences and environments that take into account varied ways of thinking and knowing, are relevant inside and outside of the classroom, and can both enrich and encompass the lives of students on and off campus (Chavez & Longerbeam, 2016; Ibarra, 2001, 2005). Educators can leverage multicontext theory by integrating high context features like community wisdom, storytelling as knowledge, and inclusiveness into a traditionally low context system of experts sharing knowledge in a linear fashion to benefit from both approaches (Chavez & Longerbeam, 2016; Weissmann et al., 2019). Examples of possible multicontext approaches are discussed, prompting readers to consider ways they can implement or may already be using multicontext teaching and learning. The classroom as a site of exposure to diversity is one of its fundamental gifts, and to make this more explicit through utilizing multicontext teaching and learning models is to enrich the learning environment, giving students more opportunities to communicate, collaborate, and learn.

The study explores the effects of working practice in cultivating Chinese university teachers' professional identities. It collects data from questions delivered in a presentation forum and individual interviews. After analysing data the study gets the following findings. Firstly, the reasons for participants choosing to be university teachers include personal interests and job satisfaction. Secondly, after working for some years, participants' professional identities change significantly. They understand their position deeply, becoming more interested in their jobs, setting up more apparent professional goals or missions, and highlighting their moral levels and working ethics. Thirdly, working practice helps participants build clear professional plans. They expect to promote their teaching capabilities, communication abilities, and moral levels. Fourthly, working practice helps participants set up a strong sense of belongingness as university teachers. They care about other's opinions of their group. The findings illustrate that working practice can improve Chinese university teachers' professional identity, which can be explained by the collectivism of Chinese culture.

The concept of "happiness" has long been debated, particularly as interpreted through utilitarianism (e.g., Ahmed, 2010a, 2010b). This paper, however, takes as its point of departure the virtue ethicists' (e.g., Aristotle, ca. 350 B.C.E./1999; Foot, 2001) understanding of eudaimonia and interprets "happiness" through the lens of decolonial feminist community psychology. In doing so, I suggest that music education--at all levels--can reclaim "happiness" and assist learners/participants pursue "fulfillment and flourishing" through musical engagement between self and other and in this way live a "good life," a life of meaningfulness and significance for themselves and their communities (Elliott & Silverman, 2015; Silverman, 2012, 2020a; Silverman & Elliott, 2016; Smith & Silverman, 2020). In pursuing "collective happiness" within the framework of decolonial feminist community psychology, the music education profession would shift its focus from subjective, individualistic accounts of "happiness" and well-being to relational, social, and contextual versions of flourishing-as-happiness. By drawing on feminist theory and critical community psychology, this account reframes "happiness" as relational meaningfulness. A case study will illustrate the nature of musical meaningfulness, collective "happiness," and the public good. [Note: The volume number (23) shown on the PDF is incorrect. While interaction and exchange between cultures is arguably increasing in our globalized world, sentiments reflecting division among cultures and ways of being in the world remain. In particular, the relevance of ideas,theory, and philosophy based on traditional "Western" values and a focus on the individual is often drawn into question for collectivist and community-centred cultures--and vice versa. This has implications foreducation, given that much of the education discourse and approaches based on Western traditions are affecting education system across the globe and across cultures. It is also of particular significance for the educational approach focusing on developing students' own "art of living." While undoubtedly significant fundamental differences exist between most cultures, this article aims to suggest that, nevertheless, synergies and connecting points exist between Schmid's philosophical concept of the "art of living"--which is based on so-called traditional Western philosophy--and the Latin American notion of "buen vivir" (good living)--which is based on the traditions and cultural worldview of Indigenous peoples of this subcontinent. While weacknowledge the vast differences in culture and the depths of the cultural divide, our comparative reviewindicates that connections can be drawn on fundamental ethical aspects of human co-existence. We argue thatthese connecting points suggest that Schmid's philosophy can be of relevance to non-Western cultural contexts,as much as Indigenous ways of knowing and being can be of relevance to those in the "Western" worldpursuing an art of living, which, consequently, indicates that an educational approach to the art of living canbe relevant to diverse cultural contexts beyond Western-centric settings.

This reflective paper shares the experiences of a higher education professional living and working abroad and the long-term impacts of those experiences on their self-authorship journey through reflection ten years later. The story of this reflection focuses on how cultural differences and community ties helped to facilitate growth and self-confidence through navigating the challenges and complexities of living abroad in a culture with differing conventions. The paper concludes by sharing how reflecting on self-authorship during and after international experiences can help develop personal identities both as an individual and within a collective.

This study examined the relationship of a sense of belongingness with forgiveness and gratitude among Muslim students and the mediating role of a collectivistic orientation. We also studied the moderating role of religiosity/spirituality between a sense of belonging and collectivism. Using publicly available data, quantitative responses about values collected from students in secondary schools and higher education institutions (n = 13,023) of 15 countries with majority Muslim populations were analyzed using SPSS and SmartPLS. The findings reveal that a sense of belonging is positively linked with forgiveness and gratitude, and that collectivism mediates both relationships. However, the moderating role of religiosity between sense of belonging and collectivism is not in accord with our prediction. Policy implications and future direction are discussed.

When the "New York Times" released the 1619 Project in August 2019 it was met with enthusiasm and critical review. The outcome of the public debate, as of now, is mixed. Research is also mixed. Education findings suggests the project has the power to heal. Case study evidence indicates culturally centered approaches positively impact academic outcomes and mental health of historically oppressed peoples. By emphasizing and affirming African American experiences 1619 has potential to narrow the achievement gap and disrupt rising suicide rates. However, philosophy and psychology warn against overemphasizing culture. Excessive affirmation can cause groupthink. Continual praise aggrandizes the in-group to the detriment of individuality. Members are stripped of autonomy and the ability to function outside in-group norms and expectations. Experimental case studies show the power of in-group allegiance to become divisive and even predatory when interfaced with an out-group. The cultural (mis) attribution bias offers a window into the balance between the opportunity costs of too much culture and not enough culture. Too much culture strips away individual identity whereas not enough culture strips away group identity. Both are damaging. The project's embrace and criticism are expressive of the juxtaposition.

The kindergarten teachers of the Religious Kibbutz movement (RK) as a unique group are connected both to the educational approaches of the kindergartens in the general Kibbutz Movement and the state religious kindergartens. A qualitative study included semi-structured interviews with 15 RK kindergarten teachers in order to explore their self-identity. The identity of the RK kindergarten was designed to be an encounter between four axes: the connection to Jewish tradition, the kibbutz community, nature and agriculture, and a constructivist approach. The study findings brought to light the RK kindergarten teachers' unique educational approach, which includes both similarities and differences with the general kibbutz movement kindergartens and the state religious kindergartens. The study contributes to highlighting a specific group of early childhood (EC) educators, reflecting both the diverse mosaic of EC educational approaches among different groups in Israel and the potential that these groups have for enriching each other.

Over the past decade, the OECD has gradually shifted its governing mechanism from promoting 'best practices' based on comparative data on pupils' cognitive skills to actively advocating for individual and collective well-being as an "alternative" and "ideal future." This article focuses on the OECD's use of 'techno-scientific fictive scripts' as a strategy to promote happiness and well-being as solutions to anticipated crises, despite their conceptual ambiguity and token usage. It analyses how the OECD's recent 'Future of Education' projects have sought to steer its audience towards shared concerns and expectations of the future, while simultaneously asserting its technical expertise in future studies methodologies. It argues that by returning from endorsing data-driven policies to making futuristic claims using future studies methodologies, the OECD endeavours to redefine itself as both a pathfinder and a problem solver, simultaneously blending its human capital imperatives with technological inevitability in its vision of the future.

In this third paper in a series of four, we explore some ways of doing education differently. An education that moves beyond the persistent failures and irredeemable injustices of modern mass schooling episteme. The episteme for education we adumbrate -- an episteme of life continuance -- begins with a recognition of interdependency and the value of diversity, diverse knowledges and relations of tolerance. We propose an escape from the extinction ethics which modern schools perpetuate and a new grammar of living in which education and politics are processes of re-learning, co-learning, decision taking, limit testing, and conflict resolution in relation to an uncertain future. To achieve this, we outline a set of open and 'unplanned' commoning activities that would take place within local social infrastructures focused on re-politising learning itself and practicing the care of oneself, others, community and the environment. The proposal for a different education as common(ing) activities undertaken within social infrastructures, is about reimagining political and environmental relations, and co-creating a sense of collective ownership of and responsibility for the environment. A form of community that it is practical, rather than utopian, and that would be both the means and ends for such an education.

Objective: The present study aimed to determine correlates of adherence to COVID-19 health precautions among college students. Drawing from the literature, the following constructs were considered: self-efficacy, conscientiousness, social support, collectivism, empathy, and fear of COVID. Participants: Undergraduate students (N = 92) recruited from psychology classes and social media, living on and off-campus, served as participants during fall 2020. Methods: Participants completed a short self-report survey, delivered online, measuring adherence to COVID-19 health precautions and its possible correlates. Results: After preliminary comparisons showing no differences in adherence between students living on and off-campus, linear regression analyses of the complete sample revealed that the significant predictors of adherence were conscientiousness, collectivism, empathy, and fear of COVID. Conclusions: College student adherence was largely driven by interpersonal motivators coupled with a modest level of fear, rather than more general constructs. These findings offer implications for considering targets in public health campaigns delivered to college students.

Undocumented college students, who often live off campus for financial reasons as well as family obligations, cannot take advantage of what is considered to be a primary factor in facilitating student success: the sense of community and of mattering that are provided by residence halls, residential staff, and thoughtful programming. In order to determine the perceptions that undocumented college students have of the on-campus experience, this study investigated two central issues: (1) the barriers to undocumented college students living on campus and (2) their perceptions of how living off campus impacts their feelings of marginality or mattering. Participants' stories highlighted feelings of marginality as a result of several significant challenges to living on campus, especially family expectations and travel logistics. Our findings can contribute to the scholarship and can inform student affairs practitioners in their efforts to increase undocumented college students' sense of mattering. Media literacy is a much-needed competency in the digitalised world, but it is still an unknown knowledge base for older Thai adults. This design-based research set out as an initiative to promote media literacy through an age-friendly and culture-responsive training programme. The design process involved focus groups with key stakeholders and older adult 'learners' as well as field observations. This type of research work, in the Thai context, revealed the primacy of integrating media literacy learning with the Buddhist practice of mindfulness. It also highlighted the importance of incorporating certain cultural values and practices - collectivism, a sense of enjoyment, beliefs about the supernatural - into any media literacy programme particularly aimed at older Thais. The findings provide significant insight into the ways in which media literacy - especially as it has developed in a Western context -- has to be thoughtfully integrated into specifically located everyday practices and cultural perspectives.

Existing literature has noticed two competing ideas about the state-citizen relationship promoted in China's moral education curriculum: protecting one's freedom and rights, and contributing to and even sacrificing for the country. To reconcile this contradiction, this study uses the framework of 'neoliberalism as exception' to analyze the textbooks of "Morality and Laws," the primary teaching and learning materials in China's moral education. Defining neoliberalism as a focus on individual conduct, including self-reliance, self-entrepreneurship, and individual rights and freedom, this study shows how these textbooks selectively employ neoliberal ideas to promote an understanding of personhood where students are expected to not only practice self-reliance but also prioritize collective and national interests over their rights and freedom. This selective adoption of neoliberal tenets contributes to China's economic development and national cohesion, but it risks perpetuating systemic inequity since all students are posited as coming from the same socioeconomic background.

Educational theorizing makes use of various tools and perspectives to understand how differentiation processes in education have emerged as responses to socio-historical developments. Drawing on a systematic literature review, this article finds that educational research has framed these responses in five different ways: as structural-functional response; communicative response; cultural-historical response; hegemonic response; and as a response to capability development. Scrutinizing these scholarly understandings of differentiation from a meta-theoretical perspective, the article investigates, firstly, the kinds of knowledge generated within each approach; secondly, how researchers and researched subjects--differentiating agents and differentiated patients--are positioned relative to one another; and thirdly, how these approaches contribute to thinking about inclusion and exclusion in education. Drawing on insights from the author's fieldwork in multi-ethnic Southwest China, each of these five theoretical conceptualizations are interrogated with respect to their potential to accommodate conceptions of individual or collective agency.

Everyday learner-teacher interactions are a key factor in student engagement and learning. There is thus growing scholarly attention on the relational practices of engaging students as partners (SaP) in higher education. In Chinese universities, there is an emerging literature exploring learner--teacher relationships as a partnership. To advance the global conversation on SaP as it expands in China, we designed an exploratory study to understand how broader context and culture influence the implementation of the learner-teacher pedagogical partnership in Chinese universities. To do so, we drew on interviews with 27 undergraduate students and 17 academics in three Chinese universities discussing learner--teacher interactions and relationships. Using thematic analysis, the study revealed nuanced understandings and complex tensions at play in how students and academics reflected on the collectivist relational orientation of China, the risks of stepping outside of top-down policy-driven mandates, and the external global influences shaping everyday pedagogical interactions. The study is timely given the emerging literature on SaP in China and contributes much needed insight into the role of culture shaping the context of learner--teacher relationships in China. By better surfacing cultural forces, forms of partnership can flourish in China that are culturally situated and responsive.

Indigenous Australian young people comprise over 50% of the total Indigenous population (Australian Bureau of Statistics, 2017). Yet, the voices of Indigenous young people are seldom centred in policy or scholarship (Shay & Sarra, 2021). This paper shares findings from a three-year national transdisciplinary, qualitative study that explored the identity and well-being of Indigenous young people in diverse school settings. The data told counter-stories through the lens of Indigenous young people currently absent in mental health and educational wellbeing scholarship. This article illustrates how the theoretical/methodological approach and data provide a strengths-based alternative to trauma-informed and medicalised mental health frameworks that dominate policy and practice approaches. This paper shares key findings from Indigenous young people who articulated their identities as underpinned by respect, pride and collectivism and shaped by culture, where you are from, physicality and role models. These expressions are clearly at odds with broader deficit discourses on Indigenous identity and have implications for health and schooling settings.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to explore Generation Z (Gen Z) consumers' sustainable consumption behaviors at a university campus by examining various antecedent and moderating influencers of their sustainable consumption behaviors. Design/methodology/approach: A quantitative research methodology is used in this study. A structured questionnaire was administered ("n" = 279) to young college students (Gen Z consumers in the context of this study) enrolled at a large state university in the USA. The structural equation model was used to test the hypothesized relationships in the conceptualized model. Findings: Study findings show that social responsibility (feelings, engagement and expectations) and external incentives (material and social) positively influence Gen Z consumers' sustainability interests, which in turn influences their sustainable consumption behaviors (actions). Collectivist cultural values did not appear to have any statistically significant effect on Gen Z consumers' sustainable consumption interests. Moreover, learned helplessness, perceived barriers and the awareness of the consequences of sustainability consumption actions did not have any significant moderating effect on Gen Z consumers' sustainable consumption behavior. Research limitations/implications: The questionnaire was only sent to students majoring in business degrees, which may limit the generalizability of this study to broader Gen Z consumer populations. Expanding this study to include non-business students may be valuable as a next step. Replicating this study in different cultural environments of international countries could enhance the relationships identified in this study. Practical implications: Consumer social responsibility education along with material and social incentives will encourage Gen Z consumers' participation in sustainable behaviors at college campuses. Originality/value: This research provides valuable insights into understanding the importance of consumer social responsibility and external incentives in influencing Gen Z consumers' sustainable consumption intentions and behaviors. Accordingly, consumer social responsibility education and incentive programs need to be developed to encourage the participation of Gen Z consumers in sustainable consumption.

Career aspirations are a crucial aspect of future adult development for individuals of all racial and ethnic backgrounds. However, Black emerging adult men may face specific challenges and obstacles that can hinder the formation of career aspirations. Social and economic disadvantages, racism, and development in low-resourced constrained environments are known variables that impede a positive perception of their future career capabilities. Afrocentric theorists have proposed that African heritage identity and African thematic cultural norms such as religiosity and collectivism may promote educational and career aspirations in young Black men, but these assumptions have not been empirically verified. This study examined the relationships between African heritage identity, African-centered cultural norms, and career aspirations in a sample of 300 young Black men. Our findings revealed that participants who had a positive perception of their African heritage and embraced African thematic cultural norms of religiosity and collectivism reported higher educational and career aspirations. Implications for practice and research are discussed.

Shared leadership research shows that it could be beneficial in the high school classroom. During the COVID-19 pandemic, teachers were looking for best-practice strategies to move their curriculum online and to hybrid. This worldwide crisis provided a moment in time to rethink traditional education in unprecedented mandatory mass virtual and hybrid learning. For this study, data was collected using a three-interview approach on Zoom in conjunction with virtual observations of classrooms, teacher and student artifacts, and researcher reflections. The selected teachers reported that they worked to foster an environment of trust, interdependence, collaboration, and collectivism at the beginning of school year 2020 which allowed aspects of shared leadership and student voice to flourish, even within multiple, changing modalities. Students felt more confident to take safe risks in discussion and thinking because everyone was experiencing change, a shared collectivism. The participants found success using student voice consistently to help create engagement, creativity, and other shared leadership qualities in the classroom. All of the qualities were reciprocal, as trust increased, student voice also increased, and likewise for many of the other qualities. Because of this reciprocity, students were able to discuss and reflect knowledge in new ways that many times they directed. Teachers reported a sense of self-efficacy through students' engagement in their course work and their willingness to take risks. Many times, the teachers felt like students themselves as they took risks and adapted to the changing requirements.

Researchers continue to investigate the underrepresentation of Black undergraduate students in STEM majors. Hostile racial environments (George Mwangi et al., 2016) and the lack of culturally relevant resources (Johnson & Elliott, 2020) inform participation and persistence for Black students in STEM majors. The incorporation of collaborative learning and other active learning techniques has been used to counter the competitive and individualized "chilly climate" STEM culture perpetuates (Kennedy & Odell, 2014). Moreover, increasing the quality of collaborative learning experiences can work to improve Black students' engagement within STEM environments. Black STEM students often lean on the support of their peers to help them overcome the barriers they experience within STEM environments (Morton et al., 2019). Given the protective factor community is for Black STEM students, collaborative learning can be a practice that would greatly benefit them because it naturally fosters a communal aspect in their learning experience. This study is framed through the collectivist cultural orientation indicator of the culturally engaging campus environments (CECE) model (Museus, 2014). The collectivist cultural orientation indicator explains how students should experience environments that are more collectivist in nature, and this is particularly relevant for Black students as Black people as a whole tend to hold more collectivist worldviews (McGee & Bentley, 2017). Therefore, the collectivist cultural orientation indicator provides justification for why connections need to be made between Black STEM students' reliance on peer support and the benefits of collaborative learning in STEM environments, both of which lean in to collectivist worldview notions of community building and support.

To inform interventions against academic cheating among college students, the study tests the moderating role of the construct of perceived behavioral control as originally proposed yet seldom tested in the Theory of Planned Behavior, and further tests the cultural boundary conditions for this moderating role with a focus on the four horizontal-vertical individualism-collectivism orientations. Using multicampus survey data collected from 2293 Chinese undergraduate students, the moderation analyses suggest a significant and negative joint effect of perceived behavioral control with the construct of subjective norm and a positive yet insignificant joint effect with the construct of attitude towards cheating. Further moderated moderation analyses identify a pattern from comparing the four significant three-way interactions: the positive effects of attitude towards cheating and subjective norm on academic cheating are stronger under the conditions of a combination of low subjective norm with low horizontal individualism and horizontal collectivism, respectively. The study contributes to a nuanced understanding of the utility of Theory of Planned Behavior in predicting academic cheating and supports a multivariable intervention approach that closely integrates administrative measures with students' attitudinal and normative beliefs with a concern for the subtle yet significant influences of cultural orientations.

Our study explored the experiences of fully online nursing faculty during COVID-19. Using Mezirow's transformative learning theory and Hoggan's typology as our framework, we engaged in qualitative hermeneutic phenomenology, interviewing 10 online nursing faculty members to learn about their experiences teaching online during the pandemic. Results from our findings suggest COVID-19 was a collective disorienting dilemma. While working through this disorienting dilemma, faculty discovered the importance of both collaboration and professional development in the sense-making process. Furthermore, faculty pedagogical practices transformed as flexibility and compassion emerged as a necessary part of supporting students during the pandemic.

Undocumented students face significant barriers in accessing postsecondary education. Previous research has focused on how individuals and schools impacted their experiences of enrolling in college. This critical qualitative study of "testimonios" with 15 undocumented Latina/o students examines how their families shaped and supported their college navigation process. Using a funds of knowledge framework, we find that parents and siblings shaped undocumented students' college choices through "dichos", or culturally situated advice. Once students attended college, many expressed a desire to give back to their parents and inspire other family members to pursue college. Students also articulated the utility of their degree as an avenue to give back to their local communities. We discuss the need for institutions to honor the collectivist orientation of Latina/o/x students and their families through recruitment and engagement efforts with these students.

Japanese teachers consider clean-up time to be the group's responsibility, and they rely on the use of music and encouragement to make clean-up time an appealing activity. The children's positive feelings also may be partially explained by the fact that teachers consider clean-up time to be an extension of play, saving toys and activities for the next day so children may enjoy them again. Teachers use the "han" (group) to help children find peer-based rather than teacher-based methods of dealing with breakdowns in cooperative work. In each "han," children are divided into small groups of 4 or 5 children, and members of each "han" are responsible for their peers in the group. If "han" members fail to work together, teachers will encourage children to find the solution to problems by directing them to suggest a pragmatic strategy for eliciting cooperative behavior instead of using criticism or peer pressure. According to the author, to minimize the impression of their control, teachers delegate authority to children and encourage them to manage their own problems without teacher intervention. Teachers use both music and encouragement to promote children's involvement in various activities and tasks. All preschool teachers are required to be skilled in playing the piano, and they use music rather than spoken words to signal any transition time. These children's positive feelings about cleaning appear to be associated with teacher guidance. The teachers do not force children to engage in clean-up time, yet simply perceive it to be the group's responsibility and make it appealing.

Purpose: As university faculty faced new challenges, such as rapid digital social and the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) response, this study aimed to identify the daily changes in the interaction between the faculty and the organizational environment (colleague, policy and new issue) by exploring their recent dynamic educational efforts and the professional development. Design/methodology/approach: This is a study wherein perceptions of 20 faculty from 15 universities and colleges were collected through in-depth online interviews. The authors analyzed interview data by arranging and visualizing the analyzed data using network clustering. Further, they applied the Latent Dirichlet allocation of the topic modeling to monitor the appropriate number of clusters, ultimately determined as four clusters using partial clustering. Findings: The results showed that university faculty spontaneously tried to solve the problems through informal learning while the commitment to peer learning was deepening, reflecting the collectivist orientation nature of Chinese culture. Besides, the faculty also required support to reflect on their daily efforts for professional development. These results about their various learning routines prove the justification for the faculty's professional development to be discussed from the "learning by doing" perspective of lifelong learning. Originality/value: This study proved the significance of informal learning for university faculty's professional development and the reasonable value of peer learning, and provided insights into how the Chinese context may influence university faculty's informal learning experience.

While scholars have identified that the development of a critical consciousness encourages the social activism of Latinx/a/o, little is known about how critical consciousness shapes the academic identity of these students. The purpose of this LatCrit narrative study was to identify how critical consciousness influences how Latinx/a/o students view and define their academic identity, specifically by moving them toward an asset-based and empowered academic identity, similar to becoming an activist on social issues. I argue that critical consciousness can have the same impact on academic empowerment but must be accompanied a deeper recognition of how the Latinx/a/o community is influenced by its collectivist roots.

The heterogeneous nature of African society has led to increased demand for transformational leaders rooted in African values and ideology necessary for Africans to thrive in the 21st Century. This study explored the role of post-colonial school leadership (SL) models in instilling African values among learners. The original African meaning and purpose of leadership and the extent to which African school leadership systems instil African leadership values in learners were re-considered. The study adopted a qualitative research approach underpinned by interpretivism. It compared the perspectives of fifteen (15) participants purposively selected from three former British colonies namely, Botswana, Nigeria and Zimbabwe. Interviews were used to collect data that were analysed thematically and presented using verbal utterances. Findings showed that leadership in the traditional African context was characterized by humanism, collectivism and moral virtues. Leaders guided their followers to achieve their goals for the effectiveness of the communities' excellence and integrity. It was established that, in addition to school leadership training which was rampant in pre-colonial Botswana, both Zimbabwe and Botswana gave the male and the female genders a shot at leadership while Nigeria paid lip service to gender balance issues. In the three countries, the current SL systems do not have properly designed and coordinated curricular models that develop African leadership values such as "Ubuntu" and "Botho." This study underlines the need to strike a balance between Eurocentrism and Africanism in the current SL systems in Africa.

Cosmopolitanism is an ancient Greek notion which in modern times has found its way into educational practice. It expresses a moral responsibility toward everyone irrespective of cultural background, looks or ability. However, it is an ideology difficult to operationalise and convey in education if the objective is to change learners' attitudes for the future benefit of mankind. There are several obstacles standing in the way such as concurrent but incompatible value systems, the rise of individual empowerment for global economic growth and most important perhaps, the evolutionary basis of human nature. It is, for example, not possible to encourage competitive behaviour and simultaneously aim at imparting moral values. It is difficult to effectively teach a cosmopolitan mindset, but this is not to say that we should not try. Drawing from the research of multiple disciplines the conclusion of this article is inevitably paradoxical. While the effort to strive for moral cosmopolitanism is a good one, it is also not a one that is entirely possible. We must adjust expectations rather than trying to find miraculous methods by which to enable a better World through general tolerance and acceptance everywhere. Sadly, the latter is not possible. We can at best expect to have a local impact made possible by dialogue.

In higher education, a limited number of studies have been conducted on the relationship between lifestyle and creativity and dating back to more than 50 years ago. This study investigates the up-to-date results of the relationship between university students' lifestyles and their creative ideation. The data was collected two times in order to perform Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) and Hierarchical Regression Analysis. The participants consisted of 233 students for EFA, whereas regression analysis consisted of 239 students from five public universities across Thailand. The data was analyzed using 'R Programing Language' to obtain the results. The study revealed that in a collectivist culture society like Thailand, student lifestyles consist of five dimensions, i.e., family-oriented, community consciousness, modern, family concern, and traditional lifestyle. The correlation results showed that community consciousness and a modern lifestyle were significantly associated with creative ideation after controlling for gender and age variables. In contrast, family concern, family-oriented, and a traditional lifestyle were not. These findings suggest that undergraduate students who endorse modern and community consciousness lifestyles were likely to perform better in generating creative ideas.
