This study aimed to present educational interventions in the context of the Education Program through PET-Health Interprofessionality (PET-I), carried out in teaching and in healthcare service of a municipality of Goiás state, based on the analysis of focus groups and portfolios made by participants. A descriptive exploratory study with a qualitative approach was carried out, based on the theoretical-conceptual and methodological foundations of interprofessional education, from August 2019 to November 2020. It was observed that students perceived participation in PET-I as an opportunity to interact with other professions, to associate theory with practice and to act as leading actors. Participants believe that working together to provide the best care for patients requires a basic understanding of the different perspectives and responsibilities of professionals involved. They emphasized informal conversations, meetings, and case discussions as opportunities to understand professional’s opinions and assignments, and deepen their understanding of the importance of collaborative communication. This narrative review aims to analyze the literature on Collective Health to recognize what has been discussed in Popular Health Education (PHE) from 2019 to 2022. Fifty-nine articles were selected, critically analyzed, and separated into six summary categories: popular education practices as promoters of a participatory vision of health; popular education and the valorization of local popular culture knowledge and practices; popular health education as a strategy to support social reconstruction in the face of setbacks in public policies; the importance of national articulation in popular education as a response to its devaluation; popular education as a liberating project thinking about the democratic formation and the fight against institutional and structural violence; popular education in the university health training process. We achieved significant results that elucidate the importance of PHE within the Unified Health System and the academic education of health professionals, fostering respect for ancestral knowledge and care horizontality. This paper aims to bring reflections and notes for strengthening Brazilian structuring public policies, focusing on Popular Health Education in the Unified Health System (SUS) from the perspectives built in the Observatory of Popular Health Education and the Brazilian Reality. The Observatory is a valuable space for sharing health professionals' and popular educators' interpretations and experiences about local and Brazilian realities from the perspective of Popular Health Education. During its two years of activity, the Observatory has gathered summary interpretations of Popular Health Education for the crises that traverse the country's recent history in a dialogical and participatory way. In a panoramic view, the shared statements point to challenges for valuing the human approach to health promotion, including respecting local and community knowledge and social practices. Moreover, we underscore the importance of social participation in constructing participatory social processes in public health toward citizen autonomy and expanded democratic dynamics in the Brazilian State and its social equipment. This paper analyzes the concept of health equity, drawing on ideas of social justice, of rights and values, and of the social and economic determinants which define living conditions and power relations among social groups. Differing schools of thought concerning health inequality and inequity in health are considered, highlighting contemporary approaches and the conceptual and operational diversity of definitions. We adopt the viewpoint of collective health and outline the elements which are essential to the understanding of inequity: the role of social, economic, political, cultural and ideological determinants on the equity of health outcomes, access to services and quality of care. We conclude that theoretical/conceptual frameworks must be formally spelled out before we can advance our understanding of health equity. The use and interpretation of terminology is made problematic by the abundance of definitions, although there appears to be a consensus on the need to further explore - in a varied, complementary and integrated manner - aspects of health care itself and of its environment. From a collective health perspective, we need to move beyond traditional approaches, a challenge which will enable better understanding of the social dynamics which, when expressed as inequalities in health, constitute social inequity.

University extension is one of the most important bases of Brazilian higher education, which encourages social transformation, impacting academic training and social dynamics. It is clear that, with the COVID-19 pandemic, the activities of students and the elderly population of communities participating in extension practices was strongly affected. Therefore, readaptation to the virtual environment of the Extension Project Teaching and Learning Developing Collective Health Actions (EADASC) of the Federal University of Alagoas (UFAL) was necessary, which promotes actions for better life habits. Thus, the need to investigate the scope and meaning of these non-contact activities from June to December 2020 was perceived. This article is a descriptive and exploratory research with a qualitative approach. Five older people participating in the Extension above Project were included in this research, who were duly registered and actively participating in non-face-to-face activities. For data collection, a face-to-face semi-structured interview was performed. Three thematic categories were identified: the changes that occurred in their lives during the pandemic; calls received by academics and messages from the WhatsApp group; and the guidelines and activities suggested by academics through calls and video calls. It was noticed that knowing how to listen and welcome are qualities of professionals committed to the social, which was carried out by the EADASC project amid the pandemic and resulted mostly in positive feedback, even though, as an impasse, the number of eligible participants for the study was low. Introduction: Traditional approaches to try to reduce dental caries have not been sufficient to support an effective dental practice in reducing and controlling the incidence of this disease, therefore, it is necessary to move towards a different, dialectical, comprehensive, multidimensional visión, with the privilege of studying processes of social determination for a greater and better capacity to know and understand this health problem. Objective: Rethink the reductionist logic on dental caries, with a new perspective from collective health, to understand the complex-structural determinations that affect this disease. Method: This essay proposes a new integrative look at dental caries as a determined, historical, social, economic, political, as well as biological process; expressed in a social space where inequalities in oral health are reproduced. Conclusions: To reduce the incidence of dental caries, it is necessary to rethink and question the practices of traditional dentistry and socially construct new collective, counterhegemonic knowledge, explaining its dynamics in a complex urban or rural territory, determined by the general system of relations and production social, a different alternative to functionalist health is collective health.

Cardiovascular diseases are the number one killer worldwide, with 17.9 million deaths, and in Colombia, with 19,000 in the last quarter of 2022 (accounting for 30% of deaths). Despite healthcare services and educational programs, the epidemiology continues to grow steadily. Method 10 of Care as a Lifestyle, created by the Fundación Colombiana del Corazón (FCC) [Colombian Heart Foundation], aims to raise awareness to impact the perception of change and generate confidence to begin the pre-contemplation stage in peoples’ behavior, building a solid educational basis for introducing the concept of collective health to the community using simple and inclusive language, and adopting technological advances as a teaching medium. This refers to ludic and inspiring activities which help promote behavior change which aimed at building care into peoples’ lifestyles. The FCC proposes it as an apt pathway for preventing and/or reducing the incidence of cardiovascular disease by directing their actions more precisely toward clinical and social risk factors.

This article states the need to decolonize the theories, policies, and practices that dominate health, and reflects on the necessity for a new epistemology built from the Global South. This allows rethinking health with a new categorical framework, which incorporates socially determined health and life, with the optic of reaching the highest conceivable degree of living well/well-living. We put forth that the epistemic bases of epidemiology and the implementation of health systems tend to reproduce a coloniality of power and of established health knowledge. Health systems are viewed as an accumulation of reforms based on theories and policies of the Global North imposed on Latin America and the Caribbean. These systems have been built as bureaucratic, biomedicalized, treatment-oriented, and commercialized health systems that are perceived as external to societies and that reproduce mistreatment, violence, and racism. We make the argument to rethink, remake, and decolonize the theories and practices that govern both epidemiology and health systems, and, from the South, develop strategic processes for building health sovereignty as the vision for the reconstruction of hope and social justice. This study aims to identify the Popular Health Surveillance practices in Brazil, described in the scientific literature. A scoping review was carried out in the LILACS, MEDLINE, MEDCARIB, PAHO-IRIS, WHOLIS, and Scopus databases from the CAPES Periodical Portal in May 2022. Studies that clearly addressed community/population protagonism in a health surveillance experience were included in the review, with a total of 6 studies. Three categories resulted from the analysis: 1. Cues for Popular Surveillance in Health; 2. Fundamental principles of Popular Surveillance; and, 3. Pandemic and Popular Protagonism. The studies address experiences of Popular Surveillance with different actions of population groups for the production of health that experience the different risks and impacts of the productive processes in the environment, in health and in their ways of life. It highlights the importance of strengthening the Popular Surveillance representation based on the articulation of knowledge of the actors involved with data production, health promotion and health care in the territories. Rural Amazonian populations have been systematically affected by the implementation of large development projects. This case study aimed to identify the determinants of food in a rural community in Barcarena, Pará, which went through displacements and exposure to environmental contamination after the creation of the Industrial Park in the region. The Life History technique was used with a thematic focus on Food History, to seek to understand changes over time. Eight key informants who experienced community transitions were interviewed. Data were treated through Descriptive Analysis and Thematic Content Analysis. The results indicate that in the first two places of residence, food assumed a functionalist character, as an essential fact in the social organization, marked by solidarity relationships. The subsistence economy suffered ruptures due to the processes of economic and socio-environmental transformations imposed on the group, determining continuities and changes, causing a strong food transition, with effects still unknown. Dialectically, tradition is permeated by the new, (re) signification of the act of eating, but also reveals the history, place and identity of this group. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The use of agricultural pesticides is increasingly linked to public health problems and negative impacts on the environment. Furthermore, Brazilian environmental agencies lack protective actions. Our objective in this study was to analyze the process that leads to the perception of the risks associated with the use of pesticides in the riverside agricultural communities of the San Francisco Valley in northeastern Brazil. We conducted a qualitative literature review, applying the Constructivist Grounded Theory to the analysis of published scientific articles. The elements of the perception process that we identified are (1) the environment; (2) conditioning factors; (3) perception of the human body; (4) memory; (5) socio-cognitive processing; (6) automatic response; (7) decision-making process; and (8) behavior. Objective: To describe the factors of the social structure and food culture of an indigenous community that strengthen collective care. Materials and methods: Qualitative study, ethnographic method; through purposive sampling: 10 semi-structured interviews and participant observation; the content analysis was supported by the Atlas ti 7.0 tool. Results: economic-political, educational, social-cultural and spiritual factors provided evidence of food exercises and practices that from the indigenous worldview of balance and awareness with "mother earth" and of its territorial organization contribute to the collective and identity practices of the community. Conclusions: Around food, many practices are woven that strengthen care in the community; from the shagra physical and spiritual food is harvested, as well as it is also constituted as a space of identity affirmation and survival of ancestral knowledge that must be preserved. The enrichment of bioethical proposals built from and for Latin America has been increasing in recent decades. In order to contribute to this, our objective is to present a proposal for a bioethical interpretation from a philosophical approach based on the identification of central concepts of Mexican philosopher Juliana González Valenzuela. A dual bio-ontological foundation was identified: a) the “dialectic phenomenology of life,” which allows the synthesis between the biological and cultural aspects of human beings, as well as the overcoming of its contradictions; and b) the Homo humanus, which enables the existence of the bio-ethical being affirmed as an authentic being and one who seeks a good life (eu-bios and eu-zoein). Reflection on and critique of the implications that the bio-ontological foundation hypothetically couples to law and power led us to identify main arguments. However, the necessary link between the bio-ethical being and said disciplines was evidenced by virtue of their social and communitarian nature (zoon politikón, ζῷον πολῑτῐκόν).

Abstract This paper describes experiences in Brazilian public health during the worst health crisis in Brazilian history, due to the threats of COVID-19. It highlights the work in health in its multiple dimensions and nuances, emphasizing the SUS Humanization Policy (PNH) which recognizes the unfavorable and oppressive conditions in health work. It rejects both the victimized or passive positions workers and managers sometimes take on one hand and the idealization of solutions that stem from outside workers’ context or those which are hetero determined, on the other. The paper describes PNH’s tools as strategies for workers’ collectives to increase their analysis and intervention capacities, thus engaging in new ways of organizing and reinventing work.

This article examines the scope and limitations of the precision medicine paradigm and its relationship with the collective health approach. To that end, it takes preimplantation genetic testing (PGT) as a paradigmatic example of technologies aimed at the "individualization" of health processes. In this regard, we review the characteristics and scientific and regulatory foundations of PGT technologies in Argentina, and discuss the next steps for their bioethical analysis. More specifically, we shed light on some of the conditions for their implementation from a north-south perspective. We propose three themes or problematic aspects as a synthesis of our analysis, related to biases in the production of knowledge, the values and interests underlying its uses, and the underlying epistemological assumptions of these technologies. This article aims to analyze how the relationship between a social fact - racism - and an experience marked by the overlapping of singular and collective aspects of subjective experiences -- suffering - has been approached in the field of Collective Health. The method consisted of a literature review on the subject, based on a qualitative approach. The studies were searched on the Lilacs and Scielo platforms, and 12 articles were analyzed. The revised material was studied using the content analysis technique. Structural competency is a recent framework for understanding and addressing the structural drivers of disease. Latin American Social Medicine and Collective Health is a decades-long movement similarly concerned with the study and transformation of social structures to achieve health equity. In this paper, we put insights from Latin American Social Medicine and Collective Health into conversation with the developing structural competency framework. We focus specifically on insights from Jaime Breilh's new article summarising his theoretical work on medical ethics and rights in this special issue and his new book, Critical Epidemiology and the People's Health. This paper is comprised of three parts. Part 1 provides an introduction to the structural competency framework. Part 2 provides an overview of the Latin American Social Medicine and Collective Health movement, along with a summary of the social determination of health paradigm. Part 3 places insights from these works into conversation with structural competency and considers ways in which Latin American Social Medicine and Collective Health might inform the further development of structural competency, and potentially vice versa. The Unified Health System (SUS) fosters and promotes the establishment of permanent commissions for the integration of health services and higher education institutions, including Health residency programs. This report aims to describe the experience of a Public Health resident concerning professional practice in management and Primary Health Care. This descriptive experience report study was conducted from March 2019 to February 2020 in Guaiuba, Ceará, Brazil. The course listed challenges, learning and personal and professional growth and the understanding between theory and practice. The outcome of this experience facilitated the understanding of the health professional's role within the residency and the visualization of the field of action's scope, the potential, and the challenges, highlighting the tutor's preceptor's role during the training process. Despite having "mental" in its name, as far as professionals engaged in daily services for persons with mental disorders are concerned, there is not much scrutiny about the theoretical assumptions involved in characterizing and delimiting the field of mental health. What is "mental" in mental health? In order to strengthen the interdisciplinary aspects of this field, we will carry out an analysis of the theory by Terrence Deacon, a contemporary evolutionary biologist who studies the emergence of life and mind, and will offer this discussion as an essential formative aspect as yet neglected in mental health practice. In 2020, Ecuador was among the most affected places in the world in the context of the COVID-19 emergency. Serious problems of structural inequality and governance resulted in corpses lying in the streets of Guayaquil—Ecuador’s largest city—while local communities resisted in different ways. We interviewed 18 participants who engaged in actions of solidarity during this context, critically analyzed their discourses, and generated relevant themes. There was a structural scheme of (pandemic) brutality that determined embodied experiences of horror, conditioned by a governance of abandonment and its related problems. To confront such horror, solidary community resistance focused on food, physical and mental health, management of corpses, community-led communication, online education, and political participation. We interpret that this was a process of social determination of collective health and discuss important theoretical, methodological, and ethical–political implications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The paper closes by calling for greater attention to Latin American Social Medicine and Collective Health among those committed to health equity within the anglophone world.

The emergence of the field of health and human rights during the closing decades of the twentieth century offered the promise of an important shift of perspective within global health. It has been increasingly questioned, however, to what extent the health and human rights framework has indeed succeeded in ushering in a new era of global health governance and justice, as the topic has remained marginalised, marked by regional inequalities, and often dominated by legalist visions and global North perspectives. The articles and commentaries in this special issue seek to create a space where a number of other perspectives and voices can be part of the discussion. They add new perspectives and offer roadmaps for how to rewire the ways in which knowledge is constructed and relationships are formed in the field of health and human rights. The transitions towards agroecological production present changes in the different aspects of the production process: sowing, nutrition, care, links between producers, consumers and workers, relation with the nature, transportation and marketing. This research focuses on social networks and how these productions intervene in the transition from conventional models to agroecological models. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with people or groups that make up 9 productive projects. An analysis of the content of the information was carried out, which allowed knowing the components of the social networks, their links, the places of belonging and the meanings that these networks hold in the possibility of carrying out and maintaining the processes of productive transition. Knowing the place that social networks occupy in these transitions helps interdisciplinary teams to accompany the change processes from the logics that are being implemented by the producers themselves to solve problematic situations, uncertainty and affective containment. This article describes a study based on a qualitative approach that aimed to analyze the social representations of opinion makers about the right and access to health in the cross-border territoriality of Foz do Iguaçu-Paraná. To achieve that goal, interviews were conducted with leaders of social movements, university professors, health workers and journalists. Moscovici's Social Representations Theory was used with a focus on the three-dimensional analysis to process data. Findings show a diversity of representations of the right to health in the territory. They range from a notion of restricted citizenship that is exclusively granted to nationals to a broader concept of health and to the understanding of health as a universal right. Regarding access to health services as an expression of that right, contradictory movements were observed that limit cross-border access by building a conceptual barrier that marginalizes and excludes what is not national. We conclude that financing, provision of services by the local health system and international cooperation achieved regionally are aspects that need to be part of the local debate on health policy, planning and management and should make up a praxis that meets the multiple specificities of cross-border citizenship. This study discusses a supposed dichotomy between health management and health attention in the context of the Brazilian Health System, to explore how institutional support technology can interfere in this relationship. With this goal a cartographic research work was carried out, to explored the narratives, reflections and field diaries that emerged from the researcher's experience in the Basic Health Care. Inspired by Guattari's proposition of a 'minor literature', it defends the demystification of health management, featuring institutional support as a technology that may contribute to the production of a management. Telemedicine is a supporting tool for the continuing education of Brazil's Unified Health System (SUS) network health workers. Bodily practices/physical activity are relevant topics to be addressed in such an environment as health-promotion actions. This study aimed to analyze the content of bodily practices and physical activity through the medical records of teleconsultations and video classes of the Telehealth Center of Goias, Brazil. This qualitative, exploratory research analyzed medical records and video classes from a Collective Health theoretical perspective. As a result, 180 medical records and 23 video classes targeting bodily practices/physical activity content were identified. The analysis evidenced teleconsultations more frequently related to physical training, which aimed to prevent and control NCDs, and the effort by teleconsultants to present different elements of body culture and the expanded clinic, in accordance with the National Health Promotion Policy. The concept of the social determinants of health has become increasingly accepted and mainstream in anglophone public health over the past three decades. Moreover, it has been widely adopted into diverse geographic, sociocultural, and linguistic contexts. By recognizing the role of social conditions in influencing health inequalities, the concept challenges narrow behavioral and reductive biological understandings of health. Despite this, scholars and activists have critiqued the concept of the social determinants of health for being incomplete and even misrepresenting the true nature of health inequities. Arguably, these critiques have been most thoroughly developed among those working in the Latin American social medicine and collective health traditions who formulated the "social determination of health" paradigm and the concept of interculturality decades prior to the advent of the social determinants of health. We draw on Jaime Breilh's main works, with a focus on the recently published book, Critical Epidemiology and the People's Health, to (1) provide a broad overview of the social determination of health paradigm and its approach to interculturality and (2) clarify how these ideas and the broader collective health movement challenge assumptions within the social determinants of health concept. Recognizing the importance of the discussion on collective health from the perspective of Popular Education (PE), in a critical scenario derived from COVID-19 and misgovernment, this experience report explores the experiences in the Observatory of Popular Education in Health and Brazilian Reality. It is an initiative of the Extension "Práticas Integrais de Promoção da Saúde e Nutrição na Atenção Básica" (PINAB) that aims to propagate the PE and bring together its actors. Seven meetings were held and themes were worked on: "The current Brazilian conjuncture and the principles of popular education and its philosophy for the construction of methodological paths of practice", "Food sovereignty as a movement of humanity and civility: what is the role of popular education in health?", "Eugenics processes in Brazil and their consequences on health, education, justice and equity", "The world and its changes: the place and role of popular education in health", and "Popular Education in Health: Paths and alternatives for experiences and practices". This experience promoted reflections about the current conjuncture, retrieving founding concepts of PE and valuable insights in its meetings. this brief essay we take up the central categories that allow us to account for the life, work and health experiences of two education workers who have witnessed the intense period of struggle during the labor reform, disguised as "educational reform" that Peña Nieto imposed on education workers a few years ago. The identity shaped throughout life, in the social spaces of interaction is present. The incursion of oral history and social history, allows researchers a philosophicalepistemological reflection to approach the concrete totality, going from the sensible concrete, to the concrete thought, with the narratives of the protagonists through two life stories; one of them, that of a teacher with a long experience of struggle in favor of collective rights, from the organized social resistance; the other, is that of a teacher who balances from the canons of submission to hegemony. Both show subjectivity as the fundamental element to understand the paths through which health and illness are expressed and also allow to give way to an alternative to define healthy spaces where the emancipation of human capacities in the collectives to move towards health is propitiated and promoted.
