Despite focusing on stories that end happily ever after, the romance genre and public libraries have a difficult history. Many library's acquisition policies include the purchasing of romances for the collection and even provide a percentage of the funds to romances. Other libraries purchase a small number of romances but there are some that are only collected via donation. The collection development of romance is not clear-cut. Cataloguing of romance novels shows that not all books have full catalogue records nor are certain types of romances even considered worthy of being listed in the catalogue. The catalogue is about the discoverability of materials (all formats) for the customers. This research explores the purchasing, collection development and cataloguing practices of romance novels in Australian and New Zealand public libraries. A survey was sent to the public library staff responsible for collection development in Australia and New Zealand. Questions about collection development and cataloguing were then combined with data derived from catalogue searches of romance novel titles in a sample of public libraries in a mixed-method approach to explore the perceptions and practices within public libraries in Australia and New Zealand. This study focuses the theoretical underpinning of the so-called semantic gap. By analysing the discourses on ideals and practices of image search and image use in terms of different understandings of 'information' and 'communication' this study illuminates the epistemological foundation of different ways of thinking about image descriptions. More precisely, it compares the discourse for metadata production, standards and information management with the discourse among humanities scholars. Close readings of handbooks, best practice and interviews with metadata producers discloses a discourse imbued by a mechanical model for communication and information transmission and a focus on objectivity and effectiveness. Simultaneously, interviews with humanities scholars and close readings of recent archival theory reveal another understanding of metadata as historically, institutionally, and even individually situated interpretations. As this study shows, attentiveness to the theoretical underpinning of the different ideals, wants and needs of metadata for images may illuminate why these differences exists. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper discusses the role of mobile applications in enhancing library-related tasks. Mobile technology emerges as a valuable resource for saving time and eff ort. The study demonstrates how mobile applications can simplify tasks like stock-taking and generating other collection-related statistics within a library. The paper takes a distinctive approach by recording book usage statistics and monitoring staff activities, specifically the re-shelving of books. This method carries significant implications for collection development and the efficient management of library staff. It underscores the potential of mobile technology to enhance library services' economic and sustainable operation. Notably, the library's stack area frequently experiences congestion, poor internet connectivity, and insufficient infrastructure for routine operations. This article engages with current approaches to collecting born-digital objects in museums of art and design and reflects on the analysis of two case studies concerned with the respective acquisitions of a virtual reality artwork and a mobile app. The authors point to their non-standard preservation requirements and their unconventional objecthood to advocate for the value of adopting an experimental attitude to collecting. The case studies invite us to reconsider experimentation within the context of sensitive dialogic processes with creators and users who are unfamiliar with the conventions of museum collecting. Hence, the boundaries of experimentations are developed in relation to existing policies, organisational structures and practices, and defined by the stakes of multiple actors. To conclude, the authors argue that collecting institutions should prioritise building capacity and understanding needs and requirements for this emergent type of object, and embrace uncertainty over the imperative of long-term preservation in its fullest sense. Management of Natural History collections, particularly paleontological collections, is usually structured around specimens. However, it might not be feasible when the collections are incorporated from sources where the whole cycle of specimen collection is unknown, making it hard to determine what fossils belong to a single specimen and if these specimens belong to a single fossil-assemblage, taxon or individual. The Sociedade de História Natural from Torres Vedras (Portugal) manages such collections using a management strategy approach based on the spatial location from where the fossils were found. To achieve this, we have implemented a methodology for field collection and developed a spatial database in PostgreSQL/PostGIS to manage the entire stages of paleontological collections management. On top of the database, a second layer of web services, Web GIS (Geographical Information System) applications, and desktop GIS, all based on QGIS, are also under development to facilitate access to data stored in the database to internal and external researchers and partners, as well public institutions. This effort is made in close collaboration with in-house actors and stakeholders and has yielded promising results. The development of this system provides four advantages: (i) it played an essential role in supporting the transfer of the collection to new storage facilities; (ii) it provides overviews of the distribution of the characteristics of the collections; (iii) it enhances institutional partnerships by providing consistent and reliable data and(iv) it supports the establishment and development of research lines. Linked open data on collection agents contribute to increased discoverability, accessibility and transparency of natural history collections. Despite major efforts to digitise and open up museum and university object collections, related information is often stored in internal resources. This paper describes a project conducted at the Museum für Naturkunde Berlin (MfN) contributing to its collection disclosure and development initiatives. Information on historical collectors and other collection agents was transferred from the internal MfN collector wiki to Wikidata. For a total of 600 collection agents, existing Wikidata items were enriched or new items created. Special emphasis was put on linking these people to the Museum, to document their affiliation with the MfN, its collection and its archive. Within the project, an open participatory approach was taken. Several Wikidata edit-a-thons were organised to test this collaborative and innovative format for possible future application by the Museum. By opening up institutional silos and openly sharing data on agents connected to museum holdings, these data become more widely accessible and reusable, for example, as a resource for transdisciplinary provenance research. Fulfilling requests for media content in support of classroom and faculty research activities is demanding for academic libraries. Libraries strive to meet requests for media while working with challenges such as intellectual property license contracts, advances in digital communication technologies and copyright issues. This article provides an in-depth look at the changing demands of collections and services in addressing faculty requests for media, and outlines both a collection and a service strategy developed by librarians at the University of South Florida Libraries to provide faculty and students with access to diverse media titles in formats ranging from physical to streaming. The adoption of environmental DNA approaches as a standard tool for biodiversity monitoring leads to the increase in the number of eDNA-based species occurrence records; however, considerable disparity remains in the nature and quality of associated information, much of it unpublished and/or poorly parametrised. A robust system for tracking biological materials from their point of origin through laboratory analyses is required to connect inferred taxon occurrences with analytical history and provenance data. The bulk of eDNA research is currently driven by small-scale operations where the tasks of digitisation, organisation and cross-referencing field records with laboratory analytical data and biomaterial sample location, are often performed manually and disconnected. We present an integrative, full-stack data management solution that provides a structured ontological concept, a minimalist data schema for eDNA research and a software application prototype designed to facilitate real-time digitisation, parsing, annotation and archival of eDNA data. The system tracks the provenance and analytical history of biological samples through a structured hierarchy of events, linked with associated digital file attachment archives, such as images and raw sequence files, and with inferred taxonomic occurrence records. The data entry process is compartmentalised and incorporated into the corresponding stages of standard operations used in fieldwork, biological collection management and laboratory analysis. Resulting data records can be integrated into various output formats required for large-scale analytics, publication and/or submission to global data aggregators. The prototype is implemented on the Microsoft 365 platform as a relational database (Access) linked to cloud-based data tables (SharePoint) and a set of associated data conversion spreadsheets (Excel). The system is designed primarily around the data management needs of small research labs; however, it is scalable to larger institutions and inter-institutional academic networks. Numerous challenges are associated with scientific collection management including available resources, strategy development, communication, conservation plans, incorporation policies and other issues arising in day-to-day operations. All of these actions are part of ex situ geological and paleontological collections each with their own problems and solutions. This study carries out a comparative investigation of integrative strategies (databases and networks) in Brazilian geology and paleontology collections related to the university environment. A survey submitted to curators from 41 collections at 23 different institutions from Brazil allowed gathering information about their curatorial practices. The collected data used quantitative and qualitative methodologies, drawing parallel to the literature when appropriate. The analysis of these Brazilian collections shows how transdisciplinary innovation transforms museological environments, based on networks and database systems, enabling best practices. Whether through collection networks, systems or databases, interdisciplinary work permeates the entire life of the scientific object and, therefore, is considered a fundamental action in its maintenance and management. It became clear that the national reality, permeated with museological solutions, could easily be interpreted and adapted for similar collections, agreeing on best practices to the preservation of ex situ paleontological and geological heritage. This study assessed the applicability of selection and acquisition procedures at Unguja Public Library in Zanzibar. The objectives of the study were to establish library material selection and acquisition procedures at Unguja Public Library; assess library users' views on the relevance of library collections at Unguja Public Library; and identify challenges that selection and acquisition of library materials face at Unguja Public Library. A total of two hundred and twenty-five (225) respondents participated in this study. These consisted of conveniently selected two hundred and fifteen (215) library patrons and seven (10) library core staff. Questionnaire, interview, as well as obtrusive observation methods were used to collect data for the study. Quantitative data were analysed using SPSS and Microsoft excel to generate frequency and percentages, presented in form of tables and figures; while qualitative data were analysed using content analysis. The study's key findings reveal that selection and acquisition procedures are not strictly applied and adhered to at Unguja Public Library. The results have also revealed that library users are not involved in the selection process. Finally, the study recommends a close working collaboration between the Ministry of Education and Vocational Training in Zanzibar and Unguja Public Library Management to improve the quality of selection and acquisition procedures at the Library so as to build a balanced library collection that meets users' needs. The valuable audio-visual records created and produced by government agencies have the same high demand by researchers. This study was conducted to meet the objective of exploring the issues faced by government agencies in depositing valuable government Audio Visual (AV) records to the National Archives of Malaysia (NAM) as an information agency that is responsible for managing the reference sources. Five (5) selected government agencies purposely were inserted to obtain the data as a sample and population for the qualitative research design. Accordingly, the findings of the study have proposed six (6) strategies to be applied by government agencies to overcome the issues. The researcher opens this matter for future research. Benefits of digitisation include increasing open access to collection-based biodiversity data, increasing productivity of scientific research, enabling novel research applications of digitally accessible data, reducing preservation requirements through reduced object handling, and expanding potential for “remote curation” in collections. However, the time available for object and data digitisation is limited for most collections. Well documented digitisation workflows can ensure that curation time is efficiently applied to achieve digitisation outputs, and that digitisation standards are consistently applied within and among projects.While this case study focused on the generation of digitisation workflows in a medium-sized Australian university-based herbarium, the findings of this study are relevant to collections globally. The curation workflows comprise a set of modular steps required for the digitisation of herbarium specimen data and images. Steps are clearly identified as requiring human-mediation versus those that can be automated, those that require on-site versus remote-access, and those that require transfer or transformation of data or files. This clarity enables consideration of the opportunities and challenges for increasing efficiencies for collection-based digitisation, data and file management. The maps provide a contextual framework for herbarium-based digitisation pathways for those who work with specimen-derived biodiversity data, and an insight into these tools for those who are not familiar with herbarium protocols.

The Queensland Museum Insect collection (QM) and the Queensland Primary Industries Insect Collection (QDPC) have undergone significant changes over the last 50 years with major amalgamations forming two of Australia's most important and largest insect collections. In this paper we outline the history of the two collections, the staff who manage them and the specimens they hold. We discuss the differences and similarities between the collections, how they are accessed, used and managed. We also discuss what has changed in the management of those collections and how this will impact our future. Národní fílmovy archiv, Prague (the National Film Archive, or NFA) needs to update its core cataloguing system and potentially improve preservation processes to address new requirements related to (digital) content management. Since the NFA is also active in content digitisation and restoration, new digital tools were recently deployed for the purposes of supporting operation and management processes. In order to identify how the new system could improve the efficiency of both cataloguing and content management, the entire workflow has been investigated and analysed. Together with a standard process mapping, the extent to which these processes are aligned with the institution's key activities, strategies, (individual) roles and the NFA's goals was investigated. Drawing on concepts from cultural work appraisal and practical theories, techniques developed in ethnography and organizational studies were applied to examine the way in which the value of collected material is being constructed, understood and documented; and how its perception contributes to decision-making during the organisation's regular activities. The results were analysed and communicated using process diagrams and sets of recommendations. Along with gaining better insight into the NFA's operations, this approach allows for the enhancement of the new data model. There were also several mechanisms proposed which are aimed at enriching the retrieval of information related to film content origin, treatment, perception and community appraisals; as well as the improvement of strategic decision-making processes regarding digitisation, long-term preservation and distribution priorities. Panelists in this traditional session will discuss holistic decision-making frameworks for collection management activities. They will share how to build accountability to their organizational mission and values in these frameworks, as well as transparency in decision-making and strategic thinking to achieve long-term goals. In particular, the panelists will focus on how they are thinking about and embedding principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion in these decision-making frameworks. The panelists represent a variety of institutional perspectives with differing stakeholders, priorities, legacies, and processes in place, as well as a range of collection management functions, which includes prioritizing processing; strategic decision-making related to backlogs, reappraisal, and discovery; ethical and legal responsibilities towards contributors of metadata; and the creation of a DEI interest group to critically examine all areas of collection management.

In 2012, a group of librarians published the “Guidelines for Efficient Archival Processing in the University of California Libraries,” which served as a touchstone for archival staff both within the University of California and beyond in their bid to tackle significant backlogs. Over time language and linked references in the document became outdated; and the recommendations began to feel out of touch with emerging discussions of holistic collection management. This shift in the profession, coupled with the increasing prevalence of born-digital collection materials led a group of UC archivists in 2018 to embark on a two-year-long revision project to make key changes addressing the impact that appraisal, accessioning, and over-collecting have on the existence and growth of backlogs. This webinar will provide an overview of the revisions to the Guidelines for Efficient Archival Processing, making the case for a more holistic approach to collections stewardship that emphasizes the interrelatedness of each stage in the archival lifecycle. Presenters will focus on the process of developing recommendations for born-digital appraisal and accessioning, and provide context on the decision to structure the document in a way that reflects the interconnected nature of born-digital and physical collections care.

Collections assessment in academic libraries has experienced a shift in recent years from project-based models to continuous models that aim improve the responsivity of library collections to campus needs. This article reports on how one university library used a library committee with representation from across library departments to develop a holistic, on-going Collection Management Cycle. This newly created process evaluates the entire library collection over a five-year period and aligns with library reporting requirements for university program review to minimize additional workload and improve the impact of external reporting activities. The experience of academic library middle managers is largely unexamined in the LIS literature, even though middle managers oftentimes function as change agents, succession planners, and project initiators and therefore make significant contributions to organizational success. This qualitative, interview-based study examines how middle managers in collection management or technical services departments experience "leading from the middle" and how they perceive their growth, development, and current roles as leaders. Over the course of ten interviews, significant themes emerged, including: initiating or implementing change; professional relationships with colleagues at all hierarchical levels; organizational culture; and professional development and institutional support for learning. Im Freihandbereich der Berliner Stadtbibliothek stehen 517 gedruckte Zeitschriften. Diese Zeitschriften können nicht entliehen, sondern nur im Lesesaal genutzt werden. Aufgrund fehlender Messmethoden gibt es keine verlässlichen Zahlen über die Nutzung dieser Zeitschriften. Daher wurde seit 2020 eine Messung der Zeitschriftennutzung mit Sensoren entwickelt. In diesem Aufsatz wird die technische Umsetzung der Messung, Hinweise für einen Nachbau der Anlage und eine erste Auswertung der Messung und deren Folgen auf das Bestandsmanagement vorgestellt. The Berliner Stadtbibliothek houses 517 print journals which are non-lendable and can only be used inside the library. In this article, I will state a new way to measure those journals using sensors. Firstly, I will describe the technical aspects of the installation. This paper analyzes the availability, via both library lending licenses and open access, of digital versions of the monographs that professors recommend in online bachelor's degrees courses in social sciences at Spanish public universities. Monographs are the type of document most recommended by professors when it comes to teaching and learning in higher education. Digital format is most suitable for online degrees, considering the added effort entailed for libraries to get these documents owing to the geographic dispersion of the students. For this purpose, all the resources in the recommended reading section of the syllabi from a sample of online degree programs in social sciences for the 2022–2023 academic year were extracted. Then, the catalogs of the corresponding university libraries were consulted to check the availability of the monographs on the reading lists. In addition, the catalogs of the usual suppliers to Spanish university libraries were consulted to check the availability of lending licenses for libraries. Finally, types of digital lending platforms are analyzed. Monographs account for 85.6 % of the documents referenced in courses' recommended reading lists. Only 21.0 % of monographs are available in digital format, either through library lending (17.4 %) or open access (4.9 %). On the contrary, practically the entirety of reading lists is available for lending through university libraries in printed format. University libraries could make the effort to acquire even more digital lending licenses for a portion of the books recommended by professors, but in this way they could only obtain 40.9 % of the monographs in digital format. Therefore, the publishing industry is not currently meeting the needs of online university education in the social sciences, owing to a large part of its catalog – especially older works – not being offered in digital format as well as the lack of library lending licenses. Statistical data contributes to strategic planning, creation and maintenance of a library. Such data is critical to the library's collection development decisions. This study investigated the extent to which Rössing Foundation libraries use statistical data for decision-making. The objectives of the study were to establish how Rössing Foundation libraries analyse statistical data, to find out if the statistical data is used for the libraries' management, to determine the extent to which the statistics relate to collection development, to find out if there are any challenges in the use of statistics at Rössing Foundation libraries, and to come up with solutions to the challenges. The study used a case study design and employed a qualitative research approach to collect data from library staff of two libraries within the Rössing Foundation. The target population consisted of 10 library staff and six librarians were selected through purposive sampling. The researchers collected data in two phases through face-to-face interviews. The first phase covered three librarians who were interviewed before the COVID-19 pandemic and the second phase covered the same number who were interviewed after the COVID-19 pandemic. A total of six librarians were interviewed. The findings revealed that the librarians at the two Rössing Foundation libraries in Swakopmund and Arandis were not qualified, and they lacked information and communication technology (ICT) skills. This posed a challenge in compiling reports. Moreover, some library patrons did not follow library procedures. The study was limited to two Rössing Foundation libraries in Arandis and Swakopmund, which are the only public libraries in Erongo region. Although the results from the study may not be generalised to other public libraries in the country, they draw attention to the need for public libraries to document accurate and reliable statistics for decision-making. The results will inform policy at national level. The major recommendation from this study was that Rössing Foundation should hire more librarians with skills and knowledge required to collect and analyse library statistics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This review summarizes the book Artefacts, Archives, and Documentation in the Relational Museum, based on recent doctoral research by author Mike Jones. It speaks to museum professionals at all levels and Library Science or Museum Studies students. Through a discussion of historical circumstances and an intensive case study of Museums Victoria, Jones covers the treatment of museum archives and broader issues related to collections management and documentation systems. This book adds new data to the overall challenges of information management in the history of analog to digital migrations, provides key figures, dates, and places in these initiatives, and compels the reader to reconceptualize collections management technologies and practice. This study is an endeavour to investigate the preservation and conservation status of the heritage of indigenous manuscripts in the Central Library at the Jain Vishva Bharati Institute (Deemed University), Rajasthan, India, that are unknown to the scholarly world. A survey of the manuscripts was carried out to investigate their physical status. A structured interview with nine staff members from the manuscripts section was conducted to obtain information regarding the manuscript collections and current preservation and conservation techniques employed. The findings reveal that the overall preservation and conservation techniques used in the library were found to be satisfactory according to the standard operating procedures of the National Mission for Manuscripts. Findings from this recent study on university libraries in Nigeria revealed that there was a prevalence of pest infestation, including rodents, cockroaches and termites. Prominent among the causes of infestation were food and drink being brought into the libraries, along with the occasional transport of infested materials. Good housekeeping, periodic maintenance of the library environment and fumigation have been adopted as pest treatment and control measures by the libraries, although the absence of dedicated library pest control units means that they depend on any more university-wide pest control programme. This means there are challenges for pest control that include a lack of specialist knowledge compounded by a lack of training for library personnel and inadequate knowledge of Integrated Pest Management (IPM), all of which this article advocates to ensure the effective management and control of pests in the university libraries. On October 16-17, 2018, University of California (UC) libraries hosted a working forum in Berkeley, California entitled “Choosing Pathways to Open Access” (“CP2OA”) (see https://cp2oa18.com/). Sponsored by the University of California’s Council of University Librarians (“CoUL”), the forum was designed to enable North American library or consortium leaders and key academic stakeholders to engage in action-focused deliberations about redirecting subscription and other funds toward sustainable open access (“OA”) publishing.This report was prepared by members of the forum’s Planning Committee1 as a way to update CoUL on forum outcomes, and to synthesize these outcomes into recommendations for further collective (UC multi-institutional) action to advance OA. The recommendations reflect the opinions of the report drafters; they are not an official statement by CoUL, nor should publication of this report signify CoUL’s endorsement of our recommendations. We (the Planning Committee) instead hope that CoUL will consider the recommendations in due course, particularly as some of them reflect efforts already underway within various UC libraries.

The modern university library plays a pivotal role in supporting academic research and fostering a culture of learning. However, the landscape of book acquisition within these institutions has undergone significant transformation in recent years. This paper explores the challenges and opportunities faced by university libraries in acquiring books in the digital age. The challenges encompass issues such as budget constraints, evolving user preferences, and the rapid growth of digital resources. University libraries must navigate these challenges while maintaining a diverse and relevant collection to meet the needs of their academic community. The purpose of the study is to test the application of the Pareto Principle on the research productivity of journals. Oncology was selected as the subject of study and data were extracted from the "Web of Science." A series of keywords specifying Oncology and sub-fields have been derived from the Medical Subject Headings (MeSH). A string of 15 search terms (Lead, Related, and Narrow) was connected using the Boolean operator "OR" to retrieve results limiting the scope to journal articles of India and Iran consecutively. The results weren't strictly as per Pareto's Principle of 80/20 rule, but almost close (i.e., 75/25 in the case of India and 65/35 in the case of Iran). The results derived provide strong evidence that the Pareto principle fits the research productivity of journals to a great extend. The study could help libraries to improve the efficiency of collection development and financial management policies. The results will be highly applicable for the acquisition of scholarly journals for libraries, especially for library consortia. The enactment of the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) in 1990 marked a turning point for the stewardship and preservation of Indigenous cultural heritage materials. In the past 30 years, themes in library and archival collection literature have also shifted to emphasize decolonization, equity, diversity, and inclusion. This article provides an overview of scholarship on Indigenous and Indigenous-related research materials with evidence of advocacy and integration of decolonization methodologies in acquisitions, bibliographic sources and tools, digitization, access, and associated curriculum. The advent of smart new technologies, smart mobile connections and online services has a great impact on all aspects our life and activities. Also this advancement has many impacts on the world around us. Today, libraries and library services have great impact on the world. The aim of the current study is to introduce readers with new technologies applied to Internet of Things (IoT) that can help libraries to improve their services and increase users' satisfaction. This study also tries to present about the possible areas of implementing the concept of IoT in academic libraries and user satisfaction on the IoT based library services and resources. Online survey from selected Educational Institutions was conducted and Data collected from a survey of a sample of 183 library users to analyse the importance and satisfaction of IoT based services and resources. Possible areas for implementing IoT in libraries - improve access to the library and its resources, collection management, recommendation service, location-based service, appliances management, usage statistics, and information literacy. The IoT technology will notify and fulfils the user-related queries through on internet i.e., self-check-in, self-check-out, overdue reminders, online fine payment, misplaced books on shelves, etc. The study observed that the maximum number of respondents used WhatsApp and Facebook respectively. Meantime, the libraries should concentrate more on interaction through videoconferencing like, Google Meet, Zoom etc. and library tutorial. 73% of the respondents are highly using the Swayam and the second highest is e-Pathshala with 48%. The institutes provide remote based library resources and services through cloud-based access on the basis of IoT i.e. Deep knowledge - remote access, Bookshelf - Mobile App and Ezproxy -Server. Most of the higher educational institutes prefer to subscribe the Deep knowledge portal on the basis of users' satisfaction. In IoT based modern library services, it is understood that three parameters such as Academic Performance Support and Infrastructure are having significant association with the satisfaction level of 5% and training is having significant association with the satisfaction level of 1% respectively. IoT based library services and resources can be implemented in the all sections of libraries functions and services i.e. collection management, Library Marketing services, Information literacy programs, effective utilization of online learning portals, accessing of library resources, etc. ICT and Information literacy should be compulsorily included as part of the curriculum in order to equip the students and faculties for face the current digital IoT environment efficiently. The Munch Museum staff aims to answer properly and accurately when its audience asks how many paintings by Edvard Munch it holds. Counting Munch's paintings is complex because of the sort of material they comprise. An interdisciplinary working group was therefore established to examine the different types of paintings. The group also considered the requirements of the collection management system, which mirrors the tasks of the professionals in the museum. This paper presents the counting principles the group developed, gives some practical examples, and discusses problems encountered. The group defined three types of paintings: "one-sided" paintings where painting equals physical object, physical objects with paintings on recto and verso, and virtual painting groups comprising one or more physical painting fragments. Staphylinidae beetles form a major portion of terrestrial biodiversity globally and, in particular, in Northern Eurasia, a large area with a historically better known north temperate, subarctic and arctic biota. However, even here, rove beetles remain amongst the so-called "dark taxa" with a high fraction of taxonomically unknown lineage diversity. The propagation of DNA-based technologies in systematic entomology in recent decades has brought new opportunities for biodiversity exploration, true also for Staphylinidae. Simultaneously, new methods have revealed limitations of specimens sampled and curated by traditional practices, as existing legacy collections, whether institutional or private, unfortunately do not always qualify as a source of DNA-grade material. In addition, both legacy and newly-collected DNA-grade material of Staphylinidae remain highly biased towards Central Europe, a region with a traditionally well-developed scientific infrastructure and long-established culture for the maintenance of entomological collections. To increase the degree of biodiversity knowledge for our target organismal group across the globe, efficient sampling of DNA-grade material and, in particular, the development of comprehensive local collections in under-studied regions is highly desirable. To facilitate that, here we provide a practical guide for collecting and curation of Staphylinidae with a focus on capacity building for DNA-grade collections in Siberia and elsewhere in Northern Eurasia. The article looks at the challenges and opportunities of collecting and disseminating performance art from an art library's perspective. Based on the collecting experience of the Mediathek at the Academy of Art and Design FHNW Basel (Switzerland), the text contextualizes its own digital collections within the Swiss performance art context. What is special about Mediathek's collection is; (1) the fact that a remarkable number of documents of performance art are accessible for free via the internet, without login, in a structured, searchable and sustainable way. Because the policy permits, upon certain conditions, the acceptance of content from individuals, groups, and institutions not associated with the university, there is; (2) a considerable amount of 'external' materials in the collections. The Institute of Natural Fibres and Medicinal Plants National Research Institute (IWNiRZ) – formerly Institute of Natural Fibres, together with Plant Breeding and Acclimatization Institute (IHAR) in Radzików carry out tasks related to the protection of genetic resources of flax (Linum usitatissimum L.). Genetic resources of flax are stored as seeds in IHAR refrigeration chambers. The research material consisted of passport data of genetic resources of flax.

The Women and LGTBIQ+ Work Group was created in 2019 to respond to the forecast of an increase in the number of specialized collections on women, feminism and LGTBIQ+ in public libraries. Its first objective was to draw up a document to establish guidelines and to aid the management and creation of new specialized collections on these topics based on the previous experience of several libraries in the library network of the Diputació de Barcelona. The article begins by describing the working group methodology, summarizes the most relevant contents of the resulting Document (published in 2021) and reviews the experiences of the libraries in Vilanova i Geltrú, which have created new specialized centres in accordance with the guidelines. The next section discusses the present and future of the work group, focusing on the second objective: the review of the indexing of the subjects in the collective catalogue in order to find inconsistencies and suggest changes, and the assignment of new subjects to the documents related to the areas of knowledge concerned, in order to make them more accessible. This paper highlights the importance of networking with other libraries and specialized offices, of sharing knowledge and experiences when addressing complex issues, and the need to keep a gender perspective in mind throughout the library and throughout the library system. It also stresses the need for library professionals to receive continuous training in these areas.
