For thousands of years, mortar-based materials — including bedding mortars, plaster floors, internal wall plasters, external wall renders and stuccos, and concrete — have been key construction materials in many cultures throughout the world. This paper gives an overview and examples of the use and development of mortar-based materials in cultures across the Middle East, Europe, Asia, and Mesoamerica, prior to the development of hydraulic cements in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. In the field of historical buildings, the wide use of lime as a binder in various contexts of application emerges from a series of artistic and archaeological evidence in the Apulia (Italy) from the 4th century BCE to the 15th century CE. The large availability of carbonate rocks in the geological substratum from Daunian Subappennines to Salento areas strongly influenced the material culture of the region. In this paper, significant study cases were presented to bring to light the technological complexity, almost completely cancelled by the widespread presence of industrial products, in the use of lime over the centuries. Through examples of use from antiquity to the modern age in Apulia (Egnatia, Lamapopoli, Tertiveri, Siponto, Lucera and Monopoli sites), technological solutions indicating an ecological dimension of production were discussed, bearing witness to technologies on a human scale and sustainability. The comparison of petrographical (POM, SEM-EDS) and mineralogical (XRPD) results indicated the technological trend and custom for lime production in the Apulian region that starts from the choice of the stone to be calcined and the aggregates and passes through the modalities of lime hydration and preparation of the mixture up to the laying. Aqua Alexandrina is the last aqueduct built by ancient Romans for the city of Rome. At Giovanni Palatucci Park, the archaeological ruins run close to a pre-existent water system, Fragole cistern. This research aims at characterizing mortar samples from both constructions, to identify the materials used and infer about the technological level and the provenance of materials, using a multi-analytical approach. Combining the information obtained through the petrographic investigation of mortar thin sections at optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and X-ray powder diffraction on finely powdered samples and thermogravimetric analysis on the binder fraction, it was possible to attest the presence of both artificial and natural materials with pozzolanic behavior, which conferred hydraulicity to the mortars. The results show that materials are very similar in both constructions, confirming a well-established know-how in the production of hydraulic mortars by the Romans. The volcanic products used as aggregate are identified with two large pyroclastic-flow deposits erupted by the Colli Albani Volcanic District which extensively crop out in the area of Rome: Pozzolane Rosse and Pozzolanelle. Situated on the left bank of the Sabato river, the city of Abellinum (Campania region, southern Italy) represents a tangible testimony to the influence of the Roman civilization in Irpinia. At the site, where the remains of the public area of the town are preserved, archaeological excavations unearthed a monumental Pompeian domus, likely owned by Marcus Vipsanius Primigenius, a freedman of Agrippa, son-in-law of Augustus. The rooms preserved fine wall paintings of 3rd and 4th Pompeian style, reflecting the social status of the owner. From four rooms overlooking the peristyle, eight specimens of decorated plasters were collected, and petrographic and spectroscopic analyses were carried out to investigate the plastering and painting technology. Thin sections of all plasters depicted a multilayer technology, although differences in mix designs of the supports were highlighted. Some samples are pozzolanic plasters, containing volcanic aggregate, others can be classified as cocciopesto because of the presence of ceramic fragments mixed to the volcanic aggregate. Finally, the presence of marble powder also permitted the identification of marmorino. Moreover, the pigments, applied using a fresco or lime-painting techniques, consist of pure or mixed Fe- and Cu-based pigments to obtain yellow, orange, red, pink, and blue decorations. This study provides the first detailed insight into the composition and properties of structural mortars used in a 4th‐century AD bath complex in Aquileia, the emblematic center of Roman culture in Northern Italy. Eighteen mortars, taken from different structures of the site, and three stone samples from the vaulting opus caementicium have been analyzed adopting a multianalytical approach integrating optical microscopy, X‐ray powder diffraction, X‐ray fluorescence, and scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy‐dispersive spectroscopy. The properties of the compounds are outstanding, as revealed by the formation of hydraulic phases (i.e., Al‐tobermorite and AFm) in most of the samples: the waterproofing capabilities of cocciopesto mortars are remarkable, as revealed by the formation of anthropogenic Al‐tobermorite (5.5 wt%) in pool coating samples; the lightweight of the vaults was guaranteed by the use of porous caementa and pozzolanic volcanic aggregates imported from the Gulf of Naples, as demonstrated by petro‐mineralogical features and chemical analysis of major and trace elements. This is the first proven case of trade in these building materials to the north of the Italian peninsula. These outcomes shed new light on the robust technical expertise of local artisans in Aquileia and indicate that the Cisalpina province was by no means a peripheral reality in the Roman Empire, as far as mortar‐based materials are concerned. Mortar beds of four late 19th‐century mosaics from the Czech Republic and one mosaic from Austria were investigated using scanning electron microscopy with energy‐dispersive spectroscopy (SEM‐EDS), differential thermogravimetry (DTG), X‐ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier‐transform infrared spectrometry (FTIR) to search for common materials' features supporting the hypothesis of their origin in the Austrian workshop of the Neuhauser company. A significant similarity of mortars from three Czech (Prague) mosaics was found. They contained 12–21 wt% linseed oil. Their technology was based on traditional 17th‐century recipes. Their Austrian origin seems highly probable. Two remaining mortar beds differed not only from the Prague mosaics but also from each other. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This research deals with mineralogical, petrographic, chemical, and microstructural characterization of raw materials from the Roman Dragonara cave (Phlegraean Fields, Campania region, Italy) through Polarized Light Microscopy (PLM), X-ray Powder Diffraction (XRPD), Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy coupled with an Energy Dispersive Spectrometer (FESEM/EDS), Simultaneous Thermal Analysis (STA) and Mercury Intrusion Porosimetry (MIP). The aim of this study was to asses mortars hydraulic properties along with provenance of raw materials and mortars recipe. A focus on the reactions between the surface of the ceramic aggregates and volcanic materials with binding matrix proved to be crucial to define their role in the mix design of mortars. Representative results showed that hydraulicity of the analyzed mortars is mainly due to volcanic materials rather than ceramic fragments. In fact, reaction active elements such as Reaction Rims (RR), Interfacial Transition Zones (ITZ) and particularly Ca-rich rims were usually found at the matrix-volcanic fragments interface. Moreover, porosity tests evidence that bedding mortars, which contain mainly volcanic material and only sporadically ceramic fragments have a higher closed porosity of binder matrix due to the good pozzolanic reactivity. • Ancient mortars used ceramic fragments as pozzolanic materials. • Mortars hydraulicity due to technological addition. • Role of aggregates in mortars physical characteristics. • Multianalytical approach in historical mortars examination. • Secondary phases improving the technological properties of mortars. Abstract Twenty-six samples of mortar used for various construction applications (joint mortars, floor mortars, filling mortars and plasters) were collected from different areas of the archaeological site of Pompeii (Campania - Sothern Italy). The mortar samples belong to various historical periods covering approximately 2000 years, from the 2nd century BC to the post excavation period (18–19th century). The samples were characterized employing Optical Microscopy (OM), X-ray Powder Diffraction (XRPD), X-ray Fluorescence (XRF), Electron Probe Micro Analysis (EPMA) and Raman Spectroscopy. Moreover, image analysis was carried out using JMicroVision software in order to determine the percentages of binder, macropores and aggregate, in terms of crushed ceramic fragments (cocciopesto), rock fragments and monocrystals. The application of these techniques allowed obtaining a complete chemical and minero-petrographic characterization of the samples, which may prove useful for preparing compatible repair mortars for future restoration works. The archaeometric study provided new data on the production technology of the mortars and the analogies and differences observed among the samples, enabled us to distinguish different constructive phases, thus confirming or rebutting the archaeological hypothesis on the dating of some samples. By combining compositional variables through the discriminant analysis, it was also possible to analyse the time evolution of the materials and to construct preliminary multivariate statistical models, helpful to identify the various typologies of mortars used in the different historical periods. Lime-based mortars containing crushed clay bricks were widely used in history and proved to be more durable than other binding materials, especially when used in seismic areas. So far, their enhanced strength and durability have been attributed to the formation of hydration products on the interface between the lime-based matrix and brick fragments. These conclusions have been exclusively reached on the basis of macroscopic mechanical tests and local chemical analyzes of mortar constituents, while the local mechanical analyzes were lacking. The purpose of this paper is to verify the previous measurements and to quantify the elastic properties of the interfacial transition zone (ITZ) between crushed brick fragments and the surrounding matrix by means of nanoindentation, complemented by microscopy investigations. To that goal, an ancient mortar sample from a late Byzantine church was investigated. The elemental analysis revealed an increased amount of silica and alumina in the vicinity of brick fragments in relation to the matrix composition. In addition, an increased stiffness of ITZ compared to the lime matrix in the distance up to 20–30 μm from the grains was encountered by nanoindentation. Therefore, it was confirmed that the interface is stronger than the surrounding matrix, unlike the situation of inert sand aggregates, where ITZ is weakened by shrinkage-induced cracking. The average Young’s modulus in ITZ assessed by nanoindentation (18.4 GPa) was comparable with low-density C-S-H phases that appear in cementitious composites. The aim of this research is to characterize the binder and aggregate fractions of sixteen mortar samples from the bell tower of the St. Nicholas church at Pisa, using X-ray fluorescence (XRF), X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD), simultaneous thermogravimetric/differential scanning calorimetry analysis (TG/DSC), optical microscopy (OM) and electron microscopy equipped with a microanalysis system (SEM/EDS). The analytical procedure used for studying the mortars is based on TG/DSC analyses performed on the binder fractions, obtained by disaggregation of the mortar samples, and on micro-analytical data directly collected on the mortar binders combined with chemical, mineralogical (qualitative composition) and petrographic (modal composition) data measured on the bulk mortar samples. The collected data indicate that the examined samples are hydraulic lime mortars with natural river sands (average binder/aggregate ratio 1:1), except for two of them which are artificial pozzolanic mortars with cocciopesto . The most probable raw materials used to produce the mortars are the binding materials obtained by firing carbonate rocks locally available, cherty limestone and subordinately Mt. Pisano marble, and the Arno River sands or, more likely, natural admixtures of Arno and Serchio River sandy sediments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The purpose of this paper is to propose an inexpensive micromechanics-based scheme for stiffness homogenization and strength estimation of mortars containing crushed bricks, known as cocciopesto. The model utilizes the Mori-Tanaka method for determining the effective stiffness, combined with estimates of quadratic invariants of the deviatoric stresses inside phases to predict the compressive strength. Special attention is paid to the representation of the C-S-H gel layer around bricks and the interfacial transition zone around sand aggregates, which renders the predictions sensitive to particlesizes. Several parametric studies are performed to demonstrate that the method correctly reproduces the data and trends reported in the available literature. Moreover, the model is based exclusively on parameters with a clear physical or geometrical meaning, and as such it provides a convenient framework for its further experimental validation.

Abstract: The paper describes a study on the mortars of the basilica of San Lorenzo in Milan, which was carried out to support an archaeological study aimed at dating and documenting the construction techniques used throughout the centuries. The church, which was founded between the 4th and 5th century, at the end of the period when Milan was the capital of the Roman Empire, was subjected in time to extensions, collapses and reconstructions that lasted until the Renaissance period and even later on. Thanks to the good state of conservation, San Lorenzo church is a collection of materials and construction techniques throughout a period of more than a millennium. Mortars were investigated in order to compare the binders used for structural elements built in different historical ages. From an archaeological study, samples of mortars attributed to the late Roman period, the Middle Ages and the Renaissance were available. The binder of each sample was separated by the aggregates and it was characterised on the basis of X-ray diffraction analysis, thermogravimetric analysis and scanning electron microscopy. Constituents of the binder were identified and their origin is discussed in order to investigate if they could be attributed to the original composition of the binder or to possible alteration in time due to atmospheric pollution. Results show that, even though the binder is mainly based on magnesian lime, there are significant differences in the microstructure of the binding matrix used in mortars ascribed to the different historical periods. In the Roman period, in correspondence of the structural elements that required higher strength, also hydraulic cocciopesto mortars were detected. Abstract: The present study focuses on the compositional characterisation of Roman, proto-Byzantine and Medieval mortars, sampled in the archaeological site of Kyme (Turkey), an Aeolian city, founded in the middle of the XI century BC by Greek populations. The mortars were studied through elemental (SEM-EDS, XRF), mineralogical (XRPD, De Astis calcimeter) and petrographic (polarised optical microscopy) analysis. The comparison between the samples allowed us to emphasise compositional differences within mortars of the same historical period. In particular, we detected the prevalent use of cocciopesto, which was used as a pozzolanic additive to create hydraulic mortars in the Roman and Byzantine period. The cocciopesto was used to improve the technological properties of an initially slaked lime. Furthermore, compositional similarities allowed us to attribute an unknown sample to the Roman period. Our study also pointed out the fact that the lower quality mortars belonged to the Medieval period. As a matter of fact, the most friable sample belonging to the Middle Ages turned out to be a mixture of clay, lime and volcanic sand. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: This work describes the compositional characterisation of coccciopesto and natural pozzolanic mortars sampled in the Regio VI area of the archaeological site of Pompeii, with particular reference to the Casa di Pansa in Insula 6 and Casa 17 in Insula 2. Samples were studied by optical microscopy and analysed by XRF, SEM-EDS, LA-ICP-MS and XRPD. The XRF and SEM-EDS data, subjected to multivariate analysis (cluster analysis), identified the three main construction phases involved in building the Casa di Pansa. In addition, mineralogical and petrographic characteristics of the aggregate were determined and found to be compatible with pyroclastic deposits from the volcano Vesuvius. Study revealed C–S–H phases in the binder, due to pozzolanic hydration phemomena of hydrated lime with cocciopesto and natural pozzalana. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

• Ammonium phosphate solutions were investigated for mortar consolidation. • Mortars based on slaked lime, natural hydraulic lime or cement were considered. • After treatment for 24 h, mechanical properties were increased in all mortars. • Only minor alterations in the pore system and water transport properties were found. • Some color change was visible only when highly concentrated solutions were used. The present study investigates the strengthening ability and the compatibility of two different ammonium phosphate solutions used for consolidation of mortars based on slaked lime, natural hydraulic lime or cement, to resemble historic and modern mortars. After impregnation for 24 h, new calcium phosphate phases were detected in all types of mortar. New calcium phosphates induced significant mechanical consolidation, with only slight alterations in the pore system and in water transport properties. In lime-based mortars (initially white) no color alteration was visible after treatment, while colored mortars experienced some color change when the more concentrated phosphate solution was used. This study characterises the mortar materials used in the construction of walls and floors at the Arroyo de la Dehesa de Velasco site, located near the Roman city of Uxama Argaela (the modern Burgo de Osma—Ciudad de Osma, Soria, Spain). Multilayer mortars have been characterised by petrographic, mineralogical (X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive analyses and geochemical analysis (X-ray fluorescence). Additionally, radiocarbon dating of the mortar binder fraction was performed in order to establish the chronology of the building in the absence of other archaeological chronological records. The results showed that similar siliceous aggregates and lime binders were used in the fabrication of multilayer system mortars. Some multilayer wall mortars show ceramic fragments or brick powder to produce hydraulic mortars and improve the resistance to moisture. The raw materials used for the construction of the site were of local origin and the construction was built during the first century BC, according to radiocarbon dating. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
