Aquarien üben seit jeher eine große Faszination aus. So findet man in manch einem Geschäft oder einer Arztpraxis ein meist eindrucksvolles Becken. Neben dieser ästhetischen Funktion haben Aquarien auch eine immer größere Rolle im Artenschutz. Einige Fischarten haben ihr einziges Rückzugsgebiet in Aquarien gefunden – mit stark steigender Tendenz. Glücklicherweise arbeiten zunehmend akademische Forschungsinstitute zusammen mit Aquakulturfarmen, öffentlichen Aquarien und privaten Haltern, um den Artenschwund zumindest teilweise aufzuhalten. Auf diese Weise hat sich die Aquaristik zu einer Bürgerwissenschaft (Citizen Science) entwickelt mit vielfältigen Beziehungen zu den benachbarten Naturwissenschaften. Der vorliegende Artikel gibt einige Beispiele für Initiativen und engagierte Organisationen., Aquaria have always exerted a great fascination. Therefore, one finds impressive fish tanks in many a shop or medical practice. Apart from this aesthetic function, aquaria play a progressively greater role in species conservation. Some fish species have found their last refuge in tanks – definitely with an upward trend. Fortunately, academic research institutes increasingly work together with aquaculture farms, public aquaria and private owners to stop species extinction at least partly. In this way, fishkeeping by private aquarists has evolved into another branch of citizen science with multiple relationships to related sciences. The present article gives some examples of initiatives and active organizations.

International audience; Introduction Livestock farming and its negative impacts are increasingly criticized by society; its evolution toward more sustainable systems is therefore a key aspect of the transition of agro-food systems. It is necessary to rethink livestock systems' research and innovation processes and develop innovative solutions. Including citizens, non-professionals of the sector, who are less influenced by the current organization of the agricultural sector could be an opportunity to generate innovative solutions, but they have been kept away from research and innovation processes so far. Methods In this context, we implemented a co-design process involving researchers, livestock professionals, and citizens in a participatory research project aiming at producing knowledge and developing innovative solutions for the future mountain dairy systems. For this, we have adapted the KCP design method known to promote the exploration of innovative solutions, support the agro-ecological transition, and build a common horizon. Results The analysis of this collective dynamic and its outputs allowed us to highlight the positive contribution of citizens during the design process, even if they are not livestock experts. The citizens participated in the formulation of new knowledge by questioning the researchers and livestock professionals and were less influenced by the current system. This contributed to the exploration of original and varied solutions for livestock farming systems. Discussion This experimentation offers perspectives for including citizens in agro-food systems research and innovation process. It also opens up interesting perspectives for the fields of citizen science and co-design research.

The Transcrire platform is a collaborative online transcription tool. It allows researchers as well as amateurs to contribute to the transcription of already digitized manuscript documents held by research libraries in their heritage collections. It gathers manuscripts produced by researchers in humanities and social sciences during their fields: for instance field notebooks, excavation notebooks, travel and survey notes.The project aims at redesigning, stabilizing and expanding the services related to the transcription of these manuscript corpus. The migration of the website to an Omeka S environment should allow both to anticipate the technological obsolescence of the current platform in Omeka and to anchor it in the opendata and the semantic web.Furthermore, the addition of new functionalities, the development of training actions and the production of guidelines and booklets, will empower libraries and research projects :- in their management of collections, metadata and transcripts;- in the creation of processing chains in order to integrate the transcripts into their own information systems;- in the articulation of the platform with automatic handwriting recognition solutions;- in facilitating the emergence of communities of contributors.; La plate-forme Transcrire est un outil de transcription collaborative (http://transcrire.huma-num.fr/). Elle propose à chacun (chercheurs comme publics amateurs) de contribuer à la transcription de documents manuscrits déjà numérisés en mode image et provenant de collections patrimoniales de bibliothèques de recherche. Son périmètre éditorial actuel couvre les matériaux de terrains manuscrits provenant de fonds d’archives de chercheurs en sciences humaines et sociales (carnets de terrain, carnets de fouille, notes de voyage et d’enquête par exemple).Le projet vise à refondre, stabiliser et étoffer l’offre de service liée à la transcription de ces corpus manuscrits. La migration du site web et de ces contenus vers un environnement Omeka S doit permettre à la fois d’anticiper l’obsolescence technologique de la plateforme actuelle et d’ancrer celle-ci dans l’ouverture des données et le web sémantique.Il s’agit aussi, par l’ajout de fonctionnalités nouvelles, la mise en place d’actions de formation et la production de livrets d’accompagnement, de donner une plus grande autonomie aux bibliothèques et projets de recherche dans :– la gestion des collections, des métadonnées et des transcriptions ;– la mise en place de chaînes d’intégration des transcriptions dans leurs propres systèmes d’information ;– l’articulation de la plate-forme avec des solutions de reconnaissance automatique d’écriture manuscrite ;– l’animation de communautés de contributeurs.

International audience; Citizen sciences are commonly defined as science by nonscientists or a form of science enacted and developed by citizens themselves , the participation of the general public in the research design, data collection and interpretation process together with scientists. The purpose of this paper is to present the opportunities and potential challenges of citizen science and the use of low-cost sensors as a means to complement institutional or scientific data collection.

International audience; This study draws on a genealogical analysis of the institutionalization of participatory research and innovation by-large on one side, and of popular education movements on the other to understand barriers to partnerships between universities and associations. On one side, researchers have an ambiguous posture vis-à-vis participatory research. On the other, associations made innovation activities invisible. The frontier work of both stakeholders led to socio-cultural obstacles to the development of partnerships between research institutions and associations. Nevertherless, they are agents of responsible research and innovation, particularly in the fields of health, agriculture and the environment. Because of their territorial positioning, universities could help to facilitate the creation of links between associations and research teams through various partnership actions. This development is part of the agenda for open science and open innovation, third places, and STEAM.; Cette étude présente une analyse généalogique de l’institutionnalisation des recherches participatives et de l’innovation élargie d’une part, et de celle des mouvements d’éducation populaire d’autre part. La première explicite la posture ambiguë des chercheurs et de leurs institutions vis-à-vis des recherches participatives. La seconde permet de comprendre la mise en invisibilité des activités d’innovation dans les associations. Le travail de frontière de ces deux mondes résulte dans des freins socio-culturels au développement de partenariats entre associations et institutions de recherche. Or, les associations contribuent à la recherche et à l’innovation responsable, notamment dans les secteurs de la santé, de l’agriculture et de l’environnement. Du fait de leur positionnement territorial, les universités pourraient contribuer à faciliter la mise en liens entre associations et équipes de recherche à travers différentes actions de partenariat. Cette évolution s’inscrit dans la mise à l'agenda de l'Open science et l’innovation ouverte, des tiers lieux, et de la formation par la recherche.

Identifying, maintaining and restoring a functional network of suitable habitats for biodiversity is fundamental in the face of current ecological concerns, in particular in human-dominated regions. This thesis aims to identify regional ecological networks linked to agricultural landscape mosaics using model species: amphibians. We built habitat suitability models (HSM/SDM) for nine, essentially common species at regional scale, from opportunistic data. We obtained an independent evaluation dataset from participatory science data which were filtered and completed with the aid of local naturalist groups. Secondly, we integrated multi-scale processes relating to mobility into the SDM. Finally, we compiled suitability habitat maps to create a multi-specificsuitability index that we integrated into a regional connectivity analysis and then compared to the existing conservation network (protected areas and green infrastructure). This work shows that citizen science data can be useful, after filtering, to improve the evaluation of SDM. In addition, the integration of multiscale processes can help to increase their predictive power. Finally, we have highlighted multi-specific distribution patterns and identified gaps in the existing regional conservation network. This work constitutes a basis for the improvement of conservation policies for amphibians and associated agricultural landscape mosaics at the regional level and for strengthening the links between academic and non-academic organizations., Identifier, conserver et restaurer un réseau fonctionnel d’habitats favorables à la biodiversité est fondamental face aux enjeux écologiques actuels, en particulier dans des régions fortement anthropisées. Cette thèse vise à identifier des réseaux écologiques régionaux liés aux mosaïques paysagères agricoles à partir d’espèces modèles : les amphibiens. Nous avons réalisé des modèles d’habitat favorable (HSM/SDM) pour neuf espèces, essentiellement communes, à l’échelle régionale à partir de données opportunistes. Nous avons constitué un jeu de données indépendant pour l’évaluation à partir de données de sciences participatives filtrées et complétées avec l’aide des réseaux naturalistes. Dans un second temps, nous avons intégré aux SDM des processus multi-échelles liés aux déplacements.Enfin, nous avons compilé des cartes d’habitat favorables pour créer un indice de favorabilité multi-spécifique que nous avons intégré dans une analyse de connectivité régionale puis confronté au réseau de conservation existant. Ces travaux montrent que des données de sciences participatives peuvent être mobilisées pour améliorer l’évaluation des SDM et que l’intégration de processus multi-échelles est pertinente pour augmenter leur pouvoir prédictif. Enfin, nous avons mis en évidence des distributions multi-spécifiques et identifié des lacunes dans le réseau régional de conservation existant. Ce travail pourra contribuer à l’amélioration des politiques de conservation des amphibiens et des mosaïques agricoles associées et à renforcer les liens entre structures académiques et non-académiques.

This special section is derived from an international transdisciplinary Conference (OCEANEXT) held in 2016. It aimed at contributing to explore new initiatives mixing up scientific expertise and a participatory approach of stakeholders. This conference also ended the COSELMAR project (2013–2017), having brought together almost 170 researchers and resulted in 360 publications and communications. In this special issue, a panel of few communications were converted into peer-reviewed contributions focusing on the need for effective monitoring ahead of potential outbreaks to enhance the adaptive conditions for coastal communities and for more participation of stakeholders in the governance of social ecological marine systems. These few examples witness that transdisciplinary research on marine social ecological systems brings sound outputs, if researchers are willing to go out of their disciplinary comfort zone so as to collaborate with other disciplines and if they are able to change the way research is done within society. As a result, funding big integrating projects such as COSELMAR is essential in a marine realm constantly facing new challenges.

Mobilizing citizens for supporting research is a very widespread action in the field of natural sciences and particularly for obtaining data on the location and counting of plant and/or animal species. This practice is much less common for water resource observation.As part of this study, an online Webmapping platform wasdeveloped to collect data (photos, videos, comments, height values...) from citizens on low flow during the summer period in the Cévennes basin of the Gardon (Département du Gard, France). Volunteers were identified according to 3 profiles to supply the platform; (1) the "reader"profile (limnimetric scale reading), (2) the "expert"profile (with whom a precise protocol has been defined) and (3) a more generic profile ("observer") which during his visit to the studied area will bring up a wide range of observations.This approach and the associated platform were tested during the summer of 2018. Technically, the system works and the approach has proven its relevance. The first results are therefore promising even if it will be necessary to be sustainable in order to continue this approach effectively, Mobiliser les citoyens dans une démarche d’appui à la recherche est une action très répandue dans le domainedes sciences de la nature, tout particulièrement pour l’obtention de données sur la localisation et le comptage d’espèces végétales et/ou animales. Cette pratique est beaucoup moins répandue pour l’observation de la ressource en eau.Dans le cadre de cette étude, une plateforme cartographique en ligne a été développée pour recueillir les données acquises (photos, vidéos, commentaires, valeurs de hauteurs d’eau...), sur les basses eaux, par des citoyens,durant la période estivale dans bassin cévenol des Gardons (département du Gard, France). Des volontairesont été identifiés selon troisprofils pour alimenter la plateforme; (1) le profil «lecteur» (lecture d’échelle limnimétrique);(2) le profil «expert» (avec qui un protocole précis a été défini) et (3) un profil plus générique («observateur») qui lors de sa visite sur la zone étudiée fera remonter des observations. Cette démarche et la plateforme associée ont été testées durant l’été2018. Techniquement, le site fonctionne, mais l’approche doit montrersa pertinence. Les premiers résultats sont prometteurs, même s’il sera nécessaire de les inscrire dans la durée pour poursuivre efficacement cette démarche.

Many amateur naturalists comb the countryside and sometimes undertake full-size expeditions to inventory the different entities of the natural world. They do it by passion, on their leisure time, and often in close collaboration with academic institutions, especially museums of natural history. Faced with the extinction crisis affecting biodiversity, this collaboration between amateurs and professionals is being renewed through what is called citizen sciences (participatory sciences in France). This thesis documents this phenomenon with the aim of understanding how participatory observatories of biodiversity transform the practice of amateur naturalists. In order to better represent the diversity of observers and schemes, we chose to focus on butterfly watchers little studied so far when they get involved in biodiversity atlases or monitoring schemes. Through ethnographic methods favoring long-term investigation and description of situated practices, our work paid a particular attention to document the irruption of digital technologies in the circulation of knowledge among peers, the diversification of attention regimes in observation experiences, and the multiplication of ways to alert society on the dangers that threat biodiversity. By highlighting the link between the community, the experiential and the political components of amateur naturalists’ activities, this thesis defends the idea that there is a continuum between the movement of bodies and the formation of values : the engagement of amateur naturalists thus appears as processual and multifaceted. The pleasure to observe and the need to testify intertwine, with attachments to encountered species and to visited areas which generate in some contexts activist attitudes reducing the partition of knowledges.; De nombreux naturalistes amateurs battent la campagne et entreprennent parfois de véritables expéditions afin d’inventorier les différentes entités du monde naturel. Ils le font par passion, sur leur temps de loisir, et souvent en étroite collaboration avec des institutions académiques, en particulier les muséums d’histoire naturelle. Face à la crise d’extinction qui touche la biodiversité, cette collaboration entre amateurs et professionnels se renouvelle à travers notamment ce qui est appelé en France les sciences participatives. Cette thèse documente ce phénomène avec pour objectif de comprendre ce que les observatoires participatifs de la biodiversité transforment dans la pratique des naturalistes amateurs. Afin de mieux représenter la diversité des observateurs et des dispositifs, nous avons choisi de nous pencher sur le cas des amateurs de papillons peu étudiés jusque-là lorsqu’ils s’impliquent dans des atlas ou des suivis de biodiversité. A travers des méthodes ethnographiques privilégiant la longue durée de l’enquête et la description des pratiques en situation, notre travail accorde un soin particulier à documenter l’irruption du numérique dans la circulation des connaissances entre pairs, la diversification des régimes d’attention dans les expériences d’observation, et la multiplication des manières d’alerter la société sur les dangers qui menacent la biodiversité. En soulignant le lien entre les composantes communautaires, expérientielles, et politiques de l’activité des naturalistes amateurs, cette thèse défend l’idée qu’il y a un continuum entre le mouvement des corps et la formation des valeurs : l’engagement des naturalistes amateurs apparaît ainsi comme processuel et multiforme. Le plaisir de l’observation et la nécessité de témoigner s’y conjuguent, avec des attachements aux espèces rencontrées et aux espaces parcourus qui génèrent dans certains contextes des temps plus militants de décloisonnement des savoirs.

Les sciences ouvertes et citoyennes connaissent un intérêt et croissant de la part des chercheurs, des étudiants et des activistes. L’idée de libérer et de coproduire la connaissance est déjà ancienne, mais le développement d’infrastructures digitales globales, les cultures du libre, de nouveaux régimes de propriétés et les mouvements maker et hacker ont accéléré un certain nombre de transformations. Les connaissances se produisent et se diffusent plus que jamais en dehors des lieux institutionnels de savoir. Cependant, une partie du monde académique traditionnel reste perméable à la culture des sciences ouvertes. Plus généralement, la dichotomie entre (co)production et diffusion de connaissances reste vive. Cette note de recherche propose un diagnostic de cette situation en partant tout d’abord des tendances en cours dans la société française. Constatant un certain nombre de décalages qui sont autant d’opportunités et de leviers pour une éducation ouverte, les auteurs s’appuient ensuite sur huit expérimentations réalisées en France et en Italie afin de faire des propositions. Toutes convergent vers l’idée d’une éducation ouverte qui ne serait que le prolongement ou le chiasme des sciences ouvertes. La note s’achève par trois propositions très politiques pour une éducation-recherche ouverte.

Protocol proposition to ease the data exchanges between the citizen sciences transcription platforms and the collection management systems. We hope that this document is clear enough to allow collection managers to prepare the images for citizen science. We also hope that the document is precise enough for implementation by platform administrators.

Large carnivores are recovering in Europe, due to an increasing forest cover, ungulate population and conservation measures. Tthis return poses challenges as carnivores can interact with livestock farming. Assessing their distributions can help to predict and mitigate conflicts with human activities. Because large carnivores are highly mobile, elusive and live at very low density, modeling their distributions presents several challenges due to 1) their imperfect detectability, 2) their dynamic ranges over time and 3) their monitoring at large scales consisting of opportunistic data without a formal measure of the sampling effort. In this thesis, we focused on two carnivore species, wolves (Canis lupus) and Eurasian lynx (Lynx lynx), to develop the methodological aspects related to the modelling of species distributions. We considered the application of occupancy models in the context of monitoring large carnivores in Europe. These models allow the establishment of a link between the species’ presence and environmental covariates while accounting for imperfect detectability, in order to establish the proportion of a study area occupied by the species.We first assessed wolf range dynamics in France from 1994 to 2016, while accounting for species imperfect detection and showed the importance of accounting for time- and space-varying sampling effort using dynamic site-occupancy models.Second, acknowledging that false positives may occur when monitoring rare species, we showcased a dynamic occupancy model that simultaneously accounts for false negatives and positives to jointly analyze data that include both unambiguous detections and ambiguous detections. The analysis of data on the Eurasian lynx in Alpine countries suggested that incorporating ambiguous detections produced more precise estimates of the ecological parameters.Third, we developed a model accounting for heterogeneity in detection while dealing with false positives. Applying our new approach to a case study with grey wolves in France, we demonstrated that heterogeneity in wolf detection was due to a heterogeneous sampling effort across space.Fourth, to deal with multiple data sources, we developed a Poisson point process approach which allows the inclusion of different data sources when building SDMs. By doing so, we also answered the question about which source(s) of information would provide most of the information when monitoring the lynx in Norway.Fifth and finally, to understand the underlying mechanisms of the colonization of wolves in France, we developed a statistical framework for estimating spatiotemporal occupancy and abundance dynamics using the ecological diffusion framework. We demonstrated the potential of our approach to predict the potential future distribution of wolves in the short term, an element that could contribute to target management areas or focus on areas of potential conflict.Overall our work shows that opportunistic data can be analyzed with species distribution models that control for issues linked to the type of monitoring used to produce the data. Our approaches have the potential for being used by decision-makers to optimize the monitoring of large carnivores and to target sites where carnivores are likely to occur and mitigate conflicts.; Les grands carnivores recolonisent l’Europe grâce à une augmentation des forêts et des populations d'ongulés sauvages ainsi que des mesures de conservation. Or, les carnivores entrent en interactions avec les activités humaines telles que l’élevage. Quantifier leur distribution peut aider à situer les impacts sur ces activités. Ces espèces sont très mobiles, difficiles à observer et vivent à de faibles densités. La modélisation de leur distribution présente plusieurs défis en raison 1) de leur détectabilité imparfaite, 2) de leur distribution dynamique dans le temps et 3) du suivi à grande échelle basé sur la collecte de données opportunistes sans mesure formelle de l'effort d'échantillonnage. Dans cette thèse, nous nous sommes concentrés sur deux espèces de grands carnivores, le loup et le lynx boréal, pour développer les méthodologies liées à la modélisation de la distribution d’espèces. Nous avons exploré l’application des modèles d’occupancy dans le contexte du suivi des grands carnivores en Europe. Ces modèles établissent le lien entre la présence d’une espèce et l’environnement dans le but d’établir la proportion d'une zone d'étude que l’espèce occupe, tout en prenant en compte une détectabilité imparfaite.Plus précisément, nous avons d'abord évalué la dynamique de la distribution des loups en France de 1994 à 2016, tout en prenant en compte leur détection imparfaite. Nous avons montré l'importance de prendre en compte l’effort d'échantillonnage variant dans le temps et dans l'espace à l’aide de de modèles d’occupancy dynamique.Deuxièmement, comme des faux positifs peuvent être présents lors de la surveillance d'espèces rares, nous avons développé un modèle dynamique d’occupancy qui tenait compte simultanément des faux négatifs et des faux positifs pour analyser conjointement des données qui contenaient à la fois des détections certaines et des détections incertaines. L'analyse des données sur le lynx boréal dans les pays alpins a suggéré que l'incorporation de détections incertaines produisait des estimations des paramètres écologiques plus précises.Troisièmement, nous avons développé un modèle qui prenait en compte l'hétérogénéité de la détection tout en traitant les faux positifs. En appliquant notre nouvelle approche au loup en France, nous avons démontré que l'hétérogénéité de la détection du loup était principalement due à un effort d'échantillonnage hétérogène dans l'espace.Quatrièmement, pour traiter des sources de données multiples, nous avons développé un modèle de processus ponctuel de Poisson qui permettait l'inclusion de différentes sources de données lors de la construction des SDMs. Nous avons montré comment la combinaison des données sur la distribution permettait d’optimiser un suivi en répondant à la question de savoir quelle(s) source(s) d'information apporterait l’essentiel de l’information lors du suivi du lynx en Norvège.Cinquièmement, pour comprendre les mécanismes sous-jacents de la colonisation des loups en France, nous avons développé un cadre statistique pour estimer l'occupation spatio-temporelle et la dynamique des effectifs en utilisant le cadre de diffusion écologique. Nous avons montré le potentiel de notre approche pour prédire la distribution future potentielle du loup à court terme, un élément qui pourrait contribuer à cibler des zones de gestion ou se concentrer sur des zones de conflit potentiel.Dans l'ensemble, nos travaux montrent que les données opportunistes peuvent être analysées à l'aide de modèles de distribution d’espèces qui prennent en compte les contraintes liées au type de suivi utilisé pour produire les données. Nos approches peuvent être utilisées par les gestionnaires pour optimiser la surveillance des grands carnivores, cibler des zones de présence potentielles et contribuer à proposer des mesures destinées à atténuer les conflits.

International audience; Several citizen science platforms aiming at monitoring biodiversity have emerged in the recent years. These platforms collect biodiversity data from participants and allow them to increase their scientific knowledge and share it with other participants, experts and scientists. One key aspect of such platforms is quality control on the data, a task usually performed by a limited number of co-opted experts. With the amount of data collected increasing steeply, finding new experts is needed. In this paper we propose a new graph-based expert finding approach for the citizen science platform SPIPOLL, aiming at collecting data on pollinator diversity across France. We exploit both users' comments quality and users' social relations to calculate users' expertise for specific insect family. Experimental results show that the proposed method performs better than the state-of-the-art expert finding algorithms.

Les sciences participatives et citoyennes ont pris depuis une dizaine d'annees un essor sans precedent, dans un grand nombre de disciplines, s'appuyant sur une large mobilisation citoyenne, le developpement du numerique et de nouvelles formes d'interaction science-societe. Pour les questions d'ecologie et d'environnement, le citoyen est souvent cantonne dans la production de donnees. Notre objectif est d'etudier les innovations recentes, dans des programmes dedies a l'ecologie et l'environnement, qui impliquent plus le citoyen dans l'analyse, l'interpretation ou la construction de nouvelles questions a partir des donnees recoltees, et d'en tirer des lecons pour l'avenir. Au travers de l'etude d'une trentaine d'exemples, nous analysons les differents types d'implication citoyenne, les facteurs favorisants, les outils mis en oeuvre. Nous en deduisons une typologie des projets de sciences citoyennes au regard de leur capacite a impliquer les participants dans l'analyse et l'interpretation. Nous concluons par quelques pistes de developpement pour les coordinateurs et gestionnaires de programmes de sciences participatives.

L’expérience de plein air, hors du confinement des disciplines académiques, engage une hybridité cognitive particulièrement nette dans le cas de dispositifs associant scientifiques et amateurs. La multiplication actuelle des sciences participatives réclame de se pencher sur ces lieux du « grand air », qui renversent la préséance du laboratoire, pour faire de la sortie nature et du protocole observé en plein air leur centre de gravité. L’article prend la mesure du phénomène des sciences participatives et propose une lecture de ses performances pour l’acquisition de connaissance et le type de sociabilité et d’accomplissement qui s’y joue., The open air experience, away from the confinement of academic disciplines, produces a cognitive hybridity all the more evident in processes of dialogue between scientists and amateurs. The contemporary development of citizen sciences requires an investigation of their manifestation in the wild, and reverses the priority given to the closed space of laboratory to describe science, to the profit of outings and observing protocols in nature. The paper considers this phenomenon of citizen sciences, and proposes a reading of its performances in terms of knowledge acquisition, sociability and other forms of accomplishments.

We describe evolving patterns of communication mediated by naturalistic collections in the context of their digitisation. Natural history collections have been a reference for theorising the role played by material artifacts in the process of standardised data production lead by multiple and heterogenous actors, including amateurs. We study the digitisation of naturalistic collections with the aim of validating the hypothesis that the characteristics of their documents and the principles of their organisation can be reproduced with a digital device. If so, digitised specimens could be used at each step of the scientific communication involving uses of naturalistic collections: sometimes collected during leisure botany practices, specimens are a source of information used during the scientific study, and in the end they are the medium for publishing the results of the study, using a new label ; over time, they become a scientific heritage documenting the history of knowledge creation. The digital reproduction of these functions of herbaria creates a model for digital mediation enabling scientific collections to be considered as both scientific information and scientific heritage. This model could be used for other kinds of digitised collections. The project of extending the functionalities of databases of digitised specimens can be lead only by curators and users. It was one of the goals of Recolnat, a national infrastructure in biology and health, in addition to digitisation of collections. In this aim, a lab in communication sciences, Dicen-IDF (Paris), has been part of the infrastructure. It had to design and develop digital tools for enhancing uses of digitised specimens. The designing process was grounded on the results of the observation of uses of digitalised herbaria and needs expressed by users working with different methods. We grounded our theoretical research on this inquiry involved in the design process in which we were taking part; user tests of devices developed by the lab were the last part of our inquiry. We analysed all the activities using specimen with the same theoretical framework grounded on a conception of communication as a set of interactions transforming artifacts and creating new meanings and new forms of social organisation. Thereby we analysed different models of communication mediated by digitised collections, depending on the functionalities of databases and on the domain and skill set of users. Digitised collections have been enhancing the numerous local efforts of inventorying collections by making available online the results of each of them. Researchers mainly communicate their results to curators in order to enrich collection data, because few databases integrate scientific annotations or corrections online. Scientific uses of digitised specimens are varying depending on the specialities : they can be used as a scientific reference, but are often used only for identifying the specimens owned by a herbarium. The software developed by the Dicen-IDF lab enhances scientific uses of digital specimen. Another software of the Recolnat project enables the traditional participation of amateurs in the curation of naturalistic collections by crowdsourcing online transcription of sheet labels. This platform creates new forms of scientific mediation between animators promoting the understanding of scientific collections and volunteers learning the principles of documenting collections.; Nous décrivons les mutations des formes de communication médiatisées par les collections d'histoire naturelle dans le contexte de leur numérisation. Ces collections ont servi de paradigme pour penser le rôle des artefacts matériels dans la production de données scientifiques standardisées mobilisant des acteurs aux compétences hétérogènes, y compris des amateurs. Nous abordons leur numérisation dans le but de tester l'hypothèse de la possibilité de reconstituer à partir de dispositifs numériques leurs spécificités documentaires. Il en résulterait la possibilité d'utiliser le spécimen numérisé à toutes les étapes de la communication scientifique où interviennent les collections : document issu de collectes parfois associées à des activités de loisir, la planche d'herbier devient une source d'information examinée au début de la recherche scientifique, puis le support des résultats d'une nouvelle expertise conservée en vue de sa réexploitation future ; elle acquiert avec le temps une valeur patrimoniale renseignant sur l'histoire des collections. La reconstitution de ces fonctions ouvre la perspective d'une médiation des collections numérisées capable d'intégrer des objectifs d'exploitation scientifique et de valorisation patrimoniale qui pourrait être utile à d'autres corpus. L'augmentation des fonctionnalités des bases de données au-delà de la seule consultation des collections dépend de la volonté d'innovation des acteurs de la valorisation et de l'exploitation des collections. C'était l'un des objectifs de l'Infrastructure Nationale en Biologie Santé e-Recolnat, qui s'ajoutait à celui de la numérisation des collections détenues par les institutions partenaires. Ce projet a conduit à la participation d'un laboratoire de sciences de l'information et de la communication, Dicen-IDF, à l'infrastructure, avec une mission de conception et de développement d'applications destinées à la valorisation des collections numérisées. La conception s'est appuyée sur l'observation des pratiques d'usagers de différentes spécialités et sur la recension de leurs attentes à l'égard des outils numériques. C'est sur cette démarche de recherche-action articulant des phases d'observation, de conception et de test des dispositifs développés que s'appuie notre étude. À partir d'un cadre d'analyse de l'activité des différents usagers comme flux de transactions, définies comme des interactions produisant une transformation symbolique et artefactuelle au sein d'un collectif qu'elles participent à modeler, notre enquête a mis en évidence différentes formes de communication médiatisées par les collections numérisées, selon les types de dispositifs utilisés et les spécialités des usagers. Les collections numérisées facilitent la progression concomitante d'inventaires locaux, qui s'enrichissent chacun des données progressivement mises en ligne par d'autres. L'intégration des chercheurs à ce travail documentaire reste dominé par des interactions avec les gestionnaires, même si certaines bases de données ouvrent des droits de correction aux usagers. Les spécimens numérisés jouent un rôle qui va du simple intermédiaire facilitant l'accès à la planche à celui de document de référence. Le logiciel développé pour e-Recolnat par le laboratoire Dicen-IDF vise à encourager l'exploitation scientifique des spécimens numérisés en associant à la sélection dans la base de données des fonctions d'annotation, de tri et de mesure, sans encore permettre l'archivage des données issues de ces opérations. L'intégration de contributeurs amateurs à l'information des collections est reconstituée à travers une plateforme proposant la transcription des étiquettes des spécimens à des internautes non spécialistes : s'y déploient de nouvelles formes de médiation scientifique, entre animateurs impliqués dans des activités de conservation et de recherche et contributeurs réguliers qui s'en font les relais.

International audience; This paper explores the means to investigate the biodiversity of multiple french campus. This is achieved by building multidisciplinary human relationships inside and between campus and between different researches laboratories. The “BiodiverCity” project, related to “Inventaire Fac'” and “neOCampus”, is encompassing expertise from several fields: informatic, social and environmental sciences as well as arts. It aims at harvesting data on biodiversity locations on several campus. This paper shows how this type of interdisciplinary cooperation can shape a citizen sciences projects. The presented case study is based on an Android mobile application named BiodiverCity that allows any campus user to notify the location of a contact with an animal or a plant on the campus territory along with its picture. This application is relayed by Inventaire Fac' in charge of the data validation, storage and communication. This case study is viewed as an opportunity to investigate why people care about their campus wildlife and flora, and to examine how does the generated critical material provides pertinent data for campus green area management and conservation.

Microorganisms are vital to environmental health, yet their association with disease often overshadows these benefits. Building citizen-science activities around the positive role of microorganisms and an understanding of their ubiquity can begin to dispel misconceptions while simultaneously engaging the public in research. Here, we describe a citizen-science microbiology project geared toward implementation in middle and high school classrooms. Students culture environmental microorganisms and document microbial diversity of plant root systems compared with adjacent bulk soil. Results contribute data toward research on microbiome recruitment of weeds and other successful plants while addressing core topics in science education.

International audience; This work, supported by the Rufford Foundation, is a pragmatic, substantial and long lasting contribution to nature conservation. It aims at including the contributions of the stakeholders in the sustainable management of natural resources from a remnant forest in Ketou region (Benin Republic). Ketou region has a long history of cultures combined with its biodiversity, including endemic plant species, concentrated in the unique Ewe-Adapklamey fragment forest. An exploration of available plants from this forest allowed to establish a preliminary list of useful tree species. So, knowledge of their current status would be updated and improved for conservation priority in Benin. In order to understand how the stakeholders can participate to the conservation activities, Farmer Field Schools known as a Group Extension Method based on adult educations method have been used to assess and take into account the expectation of local population. It consists to test an inexpensive Vegetative Propagation method, reproducible by local communities. We will present this groupbased learning process and how it allows us to collect data from the current indigenous conservation practices. This study gives us an instance to understand how indigenous people can participate to the conservation function and the sustainable management of plant resources at local scales. It would be of the utmost interest if our project could beneficiate of collaborative Web tools and we will discuss the requirement to setting up.

De plus en plus de personnes participent à des projets de recherche via des plateformes de sciences participatives (citizen sciences) en ligne, dont les promesses d’éducation, de démocratisation et de production renouvelées des savoirs rencontreraient un public de profanes avide de science. En prenant l’exemple du projet d’astronomie SETI@home, lancé en 1999 et souvent cité comme pionnier des citizen sciences en ligne, nous partons des traces textuelles (profils, messages de forums) laissées en ligne par les participants pour explorer comment ils mettent en scène leur identité et font sens de leur engagement. Loin du « public imaginé » par les concepteurs des projets de citizen sciences, se dessine alors l’image d’une communauté très hétérogène, moins intéressée par la science que par le dispositif même de mise en réseau des participants et de leurs ordinateurs.
