Food is an inseparable part of a culture and serves as one of the characteristic markers of a culture or ethnic groups. The arrival and presence of the Chinese ethnic group has contributed to the diversity of the Indonesian culture in general. One of Chinese dishes that have become a favorite delicacy in Bandung is noodles, a wide variety of which is sold in various areas around the city. Noodles are considered as a substitute for daily staple food and have become part of Indonesian identity in general. This field study used the descriptive qualitative method. Data collection was carried out through interviews and observations using the purposive sampling method. The purpose of this study is to determine the various ways Bandung people use chopsticks when consuming noodle. Results show that most Bandung people consumed noodles using spoons and forks. Their lack of understanding of the philosophy of noodles and chopsticks results in an inappropriate noodle-eating etiquette.

This case series describes transoral penetrating or contusive medullocervical injury by a wooden chopstick in three young cats presenting with acute tetraparesis. CT revealed that remnant fragments of a wooden chopstick penetrated the atlantooccipital space in cases 1 and 2. The remnant fragments were visualized clearly on CT under the bone window setting. MRI revealed a hyper-intense lesion in the spinal cord parenchyma at the level of C1 on T2-weighted images in case 3. Tetraparesis improved after surgical removal of the remnant fragment in case 2 and with supportive care in case 3.

Penetrating head injuries are rare, but can cause severe morbidity in children. In particular, penetrating head trauma with a wooden foreign body is considered to be likely to cause central nervous system infections because of its porosity and softness. However, actually confirming minute contaminations, such as skin debris or hair, in the brain parenchyma is rare. We report the case of a 2-year-old boy who presented with a penetrating head injury by a chopstick. During surgical removal of the chopstick, intraparenchymal hair contamination was confirmed under a surgical microscope. The postoperative course of the patient was uneventful. After 13 months of follow-up without any infectious events, the patient remains well and asymptomatic. The findings in the present case demonstrate that in the case of a penetrating head trauma with a wooden foreign body, surgical removal and active debridement should be the treatment of first choice. Chopsticks are a popular tool used every day by 1.5 billion people to pick up pieces of food of different sizes and shapes. Given that the use of chopsticks requires sophisticated muscle control, they are difficult to use for unskilled people. In this study, a chopstick robot that uses a new soft actuator was developed. Firstly, we developed an X-shaped soft actuator and tested its performance. When a voltage was applied to the actuator, the gap in the X shape was reduced by the resulting electrostatic force. Conversely, when the power was turned off, the actuator recovered its original shape owing to the elasticity of its material. We attached the X-shaped soft actuator between the chopsticks. The chopstick robot, controlled by the input voltage, can pick up various objects in the switched-on state and is able to release them when switched off. We tested the performance of the chopstick robot and analyzed the forces acting on the chopsticks. The robot can be used for picking up various objects. Moreover, the X-shaped actuator can be adapted for use in various studies, through different shapes and configurations.

Traumatic chopstick injury is very rare, especially in the vascular system. We present an unusual case of a 19-year-old man who presented at the emergency department after being stabbed with a chopstick by his elder brother. Computed tomography revealed a left subclavian artery pseudoaneurysm, which increased from 4 mm to 7 mm in diameter within 47 days. We successfully deployed a Niti-S stent graft for the increasing aneurysm, thereby avoiding a surgical operation. Balloon angioplasty was added for re-stenosis 8 months after the first intervention. Background Orbitocranial penetrating injuries (OPI) are an unfamiliar subset of head injury and are particularly rare in clinical practice. They are usually the result of falls or motor vehicle collisions and occur more commonly in children, who are prone to trauma while playing games improperly. Methods We present a retrospective review of 5 cases of OPI treated in the Neurotrauma Department at Xiangya Hospital of Central South University in the last 5 years. Also, we performed comprehensive literature searches using Web of Science and the terms “orbitocranial injury,” “penetrating ocular trauma,” “penetrating orbital trauma,” and “transorbital chopstick penetrating injury” to search for presentation, mechanism of injury, and management of transorbital penetrating injury. Results In 2 patients, there was right internal carotid artery occlusion while in other 2 patients, the penetrating objects reached the brainstem through the cavernous sinus, resulting in orbital apex syndrome. All patients underwent a thorough physical examination followed by diagnostic imaging. The cases were successfully managed surgically by removing the foreign bodies through their trajectories. Conclusions Computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and computed tomography angiography are key imaging modalities that are frequently used to determine the course of the foreign object and the extent of brain tissue injury as well as to rule out vascular injury in these types of cases. Penetrating craniofacial injuries with chopsticks in children are peculiar accidents in the Oriental culture. All 10 cases previously reported were caused by wooden chopsticks that required surgical operations. However, there are no reported injuries with metal chopsticks in the past literature which should have been as common as that of wooden chopstick injuries in Asia. We evaluated the difference of injury patterns and clinical observations between wooden and metal chopstick injuries. We reviewed 6 treated children with penetrating craniofacial injuries from chopsticks: one wooden and five metal chopsticks. One child who had penetration through the nasal cavity presented with temporary rhinorrhea, another with mild hemiparesis, and one child with temporary upward gaze limitation of the left eye. Radiological examination revealed 1 patient with epidural hemorrhage, 1 patient with minimal subdural hemorrhage, and 4 with intracerebral hemorrhage that were fortunately too small to receive surgery. We performed surgical procedure only for a child who had a wooden chopstick that had impacted into the temporal cortex. We followed up all 6 children for more than 1 year, and found that all had fully recovered to near-normal neurological status. We observed that penetrating craniofacial injuries with metal chopsticks rarely require surgical intervention and usually results in good outcome because the resultant wound is usually small without broken fragments compared to injuries with wooden chopsticks. A 51-year-old man visited our hospital complaining of a tumor located above his lip. He had been hit on his upper left lip by a chopstick holder 2 months previously. The lesion turned into a tumor and gradually enlarged. The tumor was well circumscribed, smooth and covered with reddish, partially milk-white skin. During surgery to remove the tumor, a piece of a chopstick was found in the subcutaneous tissue, and a diagnosis of implantation dermatosis (ID) was made. On histology, the tumor appeared as an abscess that had increased fibroblasts, small vessels and a large number of neutrophils. In the Japanese published work, we found 86 cases of ID; three were similar to our case and had been clinically diagnosed as adnexal tumors. There were also six cases that showed abscess formation similar to our case on histology. In a survey of the published work from other countries, there were 44 ID cases. Injuries penetrating into the floor of the mouth in the oral cavity caused by chopsticks are rare. We report a case of neck impalement injury caused by a wooden chopstick fragment penetrating all the way through the base of the tongue. An 18-month-old boy fell off his chair when he was biting on a wooden chopstick. Four centimeters of the chopstick broke off but could not be found, so he was brought to our emergency department with minor bleeding from the tongue. Computed tomography (CT) revealed that the fragment had penetrated through the tongue into the neck. Ultrasonography (US) revealed that the fragment was in close proximity to the common carotid artery. Surgery for the removal of the chopstick tip was uneventful, with minimal soft tissue trauma. Postoperative progress was satisfactory and without complications. Of particular interest is the sensitivity of US in outlining the broken chopstick fragment lodged in the neck.
