The theme of the article is framed in one of the main areas of modern linguistic research- a historical-cultural approach in the semantic studies of the lexicon. The national varieties of the Spanish language, given their undoubted unity, present distinctive characteristics, rooted in the distant historical past and, nevertheless, the chronotopic factors continue determining the semantic destinies of the words coming, etymologically, from the same roots. Gaucho and huaso, having developed from the same original sources, came to denote similar figures of rural life in Argentina and Chile, respectively. But the evaluative components, the use and, even, the graph, have been modified with the passage of time, and the voices continue their divergent course, despite the fact that globalization and market laws force them to play image roles in order to sell the “country brand” better.

FOLKLORE , *LANGUAGE policy , *PHILOLOGY , *LANGUAGE & languages - Abstract
This article examines the ideological and cultural implicances of Rodolfo Lenz's folklorical investigations. Our premise is that, from the notion of archive, his interest in folklorical research functioned as a strategy to refund and modernice an idea of nation through positivist means. In a first phase, the philologist scrutinized these materials searching for an authentically Chilean kernel. Nevertheless, in a second stage, his innovations regarding language teaching made him relativize that approach and move to one based on folklores legitimacy. Our thesis is that from this point it is possible to draw a system for the national language, whose articulating space would be the school: this institution shapes a style of expression (derived from folklore) by establishing a dialogue, not without friction, between the popular language and the literary language. The following article has the purpose of analysing the various meanings of the cuecas as aesthetic and political representations of chilenidad during the period of the military dictatorship, more specifícally in Santiago between 1979 and 1989. It was then that an authoritarian procedure was created which by means of múltiple mechanisms imposed the mingling between a certain type of cueca making and the cultural identity ofthe cueca assumed by the military government as part of its communication policies. This article considers the cueca both as an instrument of the political establistment and as particular species reaching beyond its traditional signifícance, ie, the "cueca sola" (cueca danced by one person), cuecas of poor neighborhoods, also known as "brava" and "chora", and cuecas which are definitely part of the Resistance. All of them are considered as acts and realities interacting within a pluralistic space created by the process of cueca-making.

The movies of the chilean Raul Ruiz can lead to a one way trip or cause us to lose in a maze full of surprises, with astonishment and perplexity. Man of encyclopedic knowledge and original director, he draws from diverse cultural sources integrating them without betraying them. His gaze, multifaceted, cosmogonic, linked to different eras and cultures, does not forget the references to his country and to his own condition of exile.

- Abstract
This project offers a new perspective for understanding the country and culture of Chile by examining the messages embedded in sport competitions. I will first detail the success of distance runner Manuel Plaza in his second-place finish at the 1928 Amsterdam Olympic Games, and analyze how Plaza’s success at an international competition was adopted and interpreted to represent the entrance of Chile into modern and Western society. I will then discuss the struggle between different sections of Chilean society to create and monopolize the master narrative of the events that took place following the military coup of 1973. This section will demonstrate how sporting symbols like the National Stadium, World Cup, and Chilean national futbol team were used as the battleground to propagate these conflicting narratives. This project aims to understand how definitions of chilenidad, or Chilean identity, have evolved over time, and explore the intersection of chilenidad and sport. Drawing upon historical, political, and literary frameworks, this project advocates for the continued study of sport within the field of area studies, in order to learn from the cultural significance that sport carries.
