The most effective way of delivering regional anaesthesia training and the best means of demonstrating competency have not been established. Clinical competency, based on the Dreyfus and Dreyfus lexicon, appears unachievable using current training approaches. Lessons should be taken from the worlds of music, chess, and sports. Modern skills training programmes should be built on an explicit and detailed understanding with measurement of a variety of factors such as perception, attention, psychomotor and visuospatial function, and kinesthetics, coupled with quantitative, accurate, and reliable measurement of performance. There has been a global expansion of solar electricity during the past decades. Solar photovoltaic (PV) electricity generation is not only simple but also environmentally benign and cost-effective. This is the most affordable and suitable power source for rural areas. The PV power output is unavoidably suppressed when there is partial shade. There were numerous maximum power point tracking (MPPT), arrays, and reconfiguration approaches that were available earlier. The authors have previously described an L-shaped propagating array arrangement. The L-shaped configuration creates the PV rows based on the chess game coin. The knight coin of this game will move in the shape of "L," which inspired new array configurations. This work discusses the hybridization of the L-shaped configuration with the conventional array configurations. The proposed hybrid L-shaped configuration has been developed in MATLAB/Simulink, where the conventional configuration and the hybrid configurations are validated under different test conditions. The test conditions are created based on the all possible real-word shading patterns. The power generation, mismatch losses, and characteristic curves were attained for each method, and this work presents all these validations with the inferences. • Experts have chunking processes that are not affected by time pressure to maintain chess playing level. • Experts occur a higher decision-making conversion under temporal stress. • IFG, FPC, dlFPC, and PCG connectivity are revealed to influence expert chunking process under temporal stress. Previous studies on the chess game demonstrated that chess experts strongly rely on the activation of memory chunks to manifest accurate decision-making. Although the chunk memory might be affected by temporal constraints, it is unclear why the performance of chess experts is not significantly dropped under time pressure. In this study, our objective is to examine the variations in cognitive neural mechanisms between chess experts and novices under time pressure. The underlying cognitive neural mechanism was carefully inspected by accessing the chess game performance between 20 local experienced and 20 inexperienced chess players with 1-minute and 5-minute time constraints. In addition, functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) recordings were carried out for each individual from the two groups while playing a 1-minute or 5-minute chess game. It was discovered that under temporal constraints, players exhibited different patterns of functional connectivity in frontal-parietal regions, suggesting that temporal stress can enhance segmentation processes in chess games. In particular, the experienced group exhibited significantly enhanced functional connectivity networks under time pressure including the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, inferior frontal gyrus, supramarginal gyrus, and postcentral gyrus, which demonstrated the important role of the segmentation process for experienced players under time pressure. This study analyzes the relations between the social conditioning factors and the taste for the cultural practice of chess manifested in the discourses of the grandmasters who compose its elite in the Brazilian contemporary context. The theoretical and methodological framework of Pierre Bourdieu was used. For the research method, retrospective semi-structured interviews were carried out personally with each Brazilian chess grandmaster. Thematic Analysis was assigned for the qualitative treatment of the data. The result originated the axis 'Grandmasters, distinct elite: the naturalness of the cultivation of taste by legitimate heirs', which mainly analyzes the favoured family origin of these agents and how this affected the success of their high-performance trajectories in this sport. It is concluded that the mechanism of the family cultural heritage acted in the production of a dilettantish taste and lifestyle in relation to chess, characterizing a distanced, liberated and detached attitude towards the practice. This condition is disseminated by its elite and does not include all people who, in Brazil, have different family origins and deal with it from an unequal distribution of opportunities in relation to the practice of this sport. Solar photovoltaic (PV) system generates low power because of nonuniform sun irradiation compared to standard test conditions. Partial shading conditions (PSCs) can arise from various factors, with passing clouds, trees, telecommunication towers, bird droppings, and similar elements being among the most prevalent causes. Under the shading scenario, multiple global and local maxima power points exist on the P–V curves. Herein, the chess game rules for the "Rook" icon are followed to attain the optimal placement of integer numbers (1–9) in the 9 × 9 size game puzzle matrix. The integer number‐based game puzzles such as Su‐Do‐Ku, symmetric matrix, and proposed Rook's movement‐game theory (RMGT) to rearrange the PV modules in arrays are investigated and compared with the standard arrangements such as series‐parallel, total‐cross‐tied during PSCs. The suggested RMGT puzzle‐based arrangement is able to achieve higher power at global maximum power point, performance enhancement, fill factor, and low power loss. As a result, the experimental study proves the superiority of RMGT configuration compared to conventional methodologies under the shading scenarios. The proposed RMGT‐based PV array is tested and obtained the performance higher side as, 63.27ImVm$\left(63.27 I\right)_{m}V_{m}$, 64.17ImVm$\left(64.17 I\right)_{m}V_{m}$, 58.95ImVm$\left(58.95 I\right)_{m}V_{m}$, and 76.77ImVm$76.77I_{m}V_{m}$ compared to existing reconfiguration methodologies. Background: Haemophilia A (HA; Factor VIII deficiency) is a congenital X-linked bleeding disorder characterized by trauma-related or spontaneous bleeding events, most notably arising within the intraarticular space and resulting in chronic inflammation and degeneration of affected joints. Endogenous clotting factor activity relative to normal levels determines the severity of HA symptoms, as mild (> 5–40%), moderate (1–5%), or severe (< 1%). Within the current environment of rapid evolution in HA management, we seek to understand the interplay of condition severity and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) to characterise and differentiate unmet needs among people with HA (PwHA). Methods: A generalised linear regression model (GLM) was developed to explore the relationship between HA severity and EQ-5D-5 L index score from adult HA patients sampled in the "Cost of Haemophilia across Europe – a Socioeconomic Survey II" (CHESS II) cross-sectional, retrospective burden of illness study among adults with hereditary haemophilia A or B from eight European countries. HA patients of any severity with no active inhibitors during the 12 months prior to data capture and a completeEQ-5D-5 L response were included. A base GLM model was specified with covariates for demographic and clinical characteristics (age, body mass index, country, employment, HA severity, annual bleeding rate, problem joints, and chronic pain). Results: Of 381 evaluable patients, 221 (58.0%) had severe HA, 96 (25.2%) had moderate HA, and 64 (16.8%) had mild HA. Among the covariates included in the GLM model and after controlling for haemophilia-related outcomes, a significant association was observed between mild HA and higher EQ-5D-5 L index score (average marginal effects, 0.084; p = 0.016) relative to severe HA. Patient country of residence and magnitude of HA-related chronic pain were also associated with significant differences in index scores, with the latter showing a negative relationship with HRQoL outcomes. Conclusions: Condition severity and chronic pain are significant predictors of HRQoL in PwHA. In the Graph Model for Conflict Resolution (GMCR), conflicts are analyzed as in a chess game foreseeing a sequence of moves and countermoves, where the length of this sequence is known as the conflict horizon. In the literature, the stability concepts mostly used are with a fixed horizon, but there are concepts that accommodate a variable horizon. Although these latter concepts have a higher flexibility, they are not applied very frequently perhaps because their properties are not so well understood. In this article, our objective is to shed some light in three stability concepts with variable horizon: limited move, generalized metarationality stabilities and policy equilibrium in bilateral conflicts. In particular, we present some existing inaccuracies in the literature of the GMCR, regarding these concepts. First, we observed that the state anticipated by the focal decision maker (DM) in the limited move stability is not necessarily unique when both the focal DM and his/her opponent move seeking to maximize their respective gains and the focal DM knows his/her opponent's preferences. Next, we present a counterexample to a result in the literature that relates generalized metarationalities and policy equilibria. The current study examined the effects of official chess competition on salivary cortisol and mood swings in adolescent girls. Fourteen girl competitive chess players participated in the 5-day Swiss chess tournament held in nine heavy and light rounds. The tournament was performed at 9:00 a.m. (first, third, fifth, seventh, and ninth rounds) and 3:00 p.m. (second, fourth, sixth, and eighth rounds). Salivary cortisol and mood was measured before the tournament, before and after the second, fourth, sixth, and eighth rounds, and following the tournament (10 samples). The resting levels of salivary cortisol had considerably greater values on the first, second, third, and fourth competition days compared to 1 week before the competition (P = 0.001). The post-competition cortisol concentration was significantly higher on the second and third days than before the competition (P = 0.001). Winners had considerably higher levels of salivary cortisol compared to losers (P = 0.001). There was a significant increase in total mode disturbance (P = 0.001), anger (P = 0.009), and tension (P = 0.045) following heavy rounds (second and third day) compared to the values before the competition. At the same time, the Scores of vigor decreased significantly (P = 0.001). The findings of the present study showed participating in the official chess competition increased salivary cortisol and caused negative alterations in mood components associated with the difficulty and outcome of the match, indicating the psychological stress. In this article I critically reflect and describe how a Sports for School Enrichment Development Project (SSEDP), initiated in a pre-service teacher’s classroom helped to create a safer and more supportive school environment, thus creating conducive conditions to quality teaching and learning. This project displays and discusses the potential of using a sports code within the school as an educational tool for creating awareness, improving knowledge and changing attitudes towards the challenges the learners face in life. This participatory action research (PAR) project highlight that higher education institutions should not only add to knowledge production, but also contribute to practical improvement in the community. In this PAR project, we introduced chess as a sport code into a township school on the Cape Flats. The research question addressed is: How does engagement by pre-service teachers enrich the lives of learners and bridge the gap between the university and the school? The data-collection techniques used were field notes, student assistant notes, interviews, questionnaires and transcribed recordings of the research team reflections. As the co-ordinator of the project, I played the role of a facilitator between the pre-service teachers and the township school. The findings indicated that this project was indeed transformative. By involving pre-service teachers as co-researchers, the vision was to place social justice issues high on the teaching agenda and to develop a pedagogy of hope (Freire, 1972) in schools. The International Chess Federation (FIDE) imposes a voluminous and complex set of player pairing criteria in Swiss-system chess tournaments and endorses computer programs that are able to calculate the prescribed pairings. The purpose of these formalities is to ensure that players are paired fairly during the tournament and that the final ranking corresponds to the players' true strength order. We contest the official FIDE player pairing routine by presenting alternative pairing rules. These can be enforced by computing maximum weight matchings in a carefully designed graph. We demonstrate by extensive experiments that a tournament format using our mechanism (1) yields fairer pairings in the rounds of the tournament and (2) produces a final ranking that reflects the players' true strengths better than the state-of-the-art FIDE pairing system. Cognitive rehabilitation, STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) skill acquisition, and coaching games such as chess often require tutoring decision-making strategies. The advancement of AI-driven tutoring systems for facilitating human learning requires an understanding of the impact of evaluative feedback on human decision-making and skill development. To this end, we conduct human experiments using Amazon Mechanical Turk to study the influence of evaluative feedback on human decision-making in sequential tasks. In these experiments, participants solve the Tower of Hanoi puzzle and receive AI-generated feedback while solving it. We examine how this feedback affects their learning and skill transfer to related tasks. Additionally, treating humans as noisy optimal agents, we employ maximum entropy inverse reinforcement learning to analyze the effect of feedback on the implicit human reward structure that guides their decision making. Lastly, we explore various computational models to understand how people incorporate evaluative feedback into their decision-making processes. Our findings underscore that humans perceive evaluative feedback as indicative of their long-term strategic success, thus aiding in skill acquisition and transfer in sequential decision-making tasks. Moreover, we demonstrate that evaluative feedback fosters a more structured and organized learning experience compared to learning without feedback. Objective: Determine the effect of chess training on executive functions: planning, cognitive flexibility, working memory and inhibition by reviewing the scientific research literature in the last decade. Method: A search was carried out in the Web of Science, Scielo, Pubmed, Scopus and Google Scholar databases for the period 2012-2022, using the systematic review methodology. Results: Sixty-six articles were found and only thirteen that met the inclusion criteria were analyzed. It was possible to identify relationships between chess and the four executive functions: inhibition, flexibility, working memory and planning, in addition to executive functioning in general. Discussion: The results have suggested that the systematic practice of chess contributes to the development of executive functioning. Because it is an easily accessible practice, its benefits could be taken advantage of by incorporating it into various educational scenarios. Conclusion: The majority of research from the last ten years provides evidence that allows us to demonstrate the hypothesis that chess practice is associated with better executive performance; there is also a single article that, on the contrary, rejects this relationship. Using Japanese professional chess (Shogi) players' records in the setting where various external factors are controlled in deterministic and finite games, this paper examines how and the extent to which the emergence of technological changes influences the ageing and innate ability of players' winning probability. We gathered games of professional Shogi players from 1968 to 2019, which we divided into three periods: 1968–1989, 1990–2012 (the diffusion of as information and communications technology (ICT)) and 2013–2019 (artificial intelligence (AI)). We found (1) diffusion of AI reduces the impact of innate ability in players performance. Consequently, the performance gap among same-age players has narrowed; (2) in all the periods, players' winning rates declined consistently from 20 years and as they get older; (3) AI accelerated the ageing decline of the probability of winning, which increased the performance gap among different aged players; (4) the effects of AI on the ageing decline and the probability of winning are observed for high innate skill players but not for low innate skill ones. The findings are specific to Shogi as a kind of board games although it is valuable to examine the extent to which the findings hold for other labor market. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Chess engines are suites of algorithms that evaluate game positions through prediction—they calculate billions of possible moves, dozens of steps into the future state of play. And over the past two decades, these algorithms have usurped humans as the principal arbiters of chess knowledge. Openings, tactics, and strategies are now all authenticated, and often dictated, by engine analysis, leading to new styles of play. This article uses the example of predictive chess engines to conceptualize an emergent temporal interplay between the future and the present. Drawing inspiration from historical metaphors of geology, this article proposes a topographical approach to temporal becoming. In this approach, engine predictions facilitate not preparations for some forecasted future state, but future‐reliant calibrations of present activity, where second‐by‐second algorithmic futures are used to make second‐by‐second decisions. This paper explores the relation between thinking and making in the context of chess. Historically, this relation has been examined through an intellectualist tradition, which reduces chess to a series of calculations, connected up and isolated to the mind of a master. Here, we speak to this tradition through the voice of a theorist, and suggest it is to put thinking ahead of making. What, though, if this relation was re-imagined? What if master chess players did their thinking, not before a move was made, but in the midst of its making? In response to these questions, we explore the conditions and potentials of chess spoken through the voice of a craftsperson. To do so, chess is first grounded, not intellectually, but ecologically. Then, weaving in Tim Ingold’s perspectives of making, we propose that the unfolding form of a game is attributed, not to the computations of a detached master, but to the attentive responsiveness of players attuned to the ebb and flow of a game, anticipating a way forward by looking, along with listening and feeling. This is to put thinking, not ahead of making, but in its midst. We round out by considering the attentive, corresponsive and temporal characteristics of chess situated as a crafted endeavour. Medieval European representations of non-White people are often perceived in two primary roles, limited to negative, subservient figures, such as slaves and executioners, or exotic status symbols, like saints and rulers. By focusing on the game of chess, this article instead casts light onto another kind of encounter in which peoples hailing from different lands could engage in a ludic contest as equals. This study draws on interdisciplinary evidence combining literary and visual representations of gaming with material evidence from surviving medieval chess sets. The first part explores the cosmological perspective by which the chess board could encompass the whole world, and the chess pieces, its peoples. Through this, it illuminates the racialized processes by which chessmen were constantly reinterpreted and investigates what the pieces tell us about medieval perceptions of color and the human body. The second strand shifts the attention from the chess pieces to the chess players. Ranging from European examples to Persian and Arabic manuscripts, it explores diverse visual strategies through which chess contests facilitated cross-racial interaction. I argue that in this highly intellectualized war game, dark-skinned players were able to challenge and triumph over the socially dominant personae with lighter skin by demonstrating intellectual prowess. This article highlights the game of chess as a hitherto overlooked resource for intellectual exchange between people of different skin colors, which ultimately contributes to a more nuanced understanding of race-making processes and cross-cultural interaction in the emerging field of the Global Middle Ages. This paper analyses Latin America's role in an international system in flux, with high levels of uncertainty and transformations that signal a shift in the geoeconomic and geopolitical landscape across the world. Against this backdrop, the paper examines the challenges (both old and new) the region must face, focusing on the impact of global changes on regional dynamics and the capacity of the different countries to find answers both to the international situation and old and new internal problems. In this paper, we statistically analyze the density of each chess piece in four square concentric frames for different skill levels (according to the Elo ranking system), phases (opening, middlegame and endgame) and outcomes. The results indicate a tendency for pawns, knights and bishops to move towards the central areas, particularly during the opening phase. Additionally, we identified intrinsic entropy patterns for each piece throughout the entire game, independent of player skill level. This essay considers chess as a particular mode of exchange in Italo Calvino’s Le città invisibili that draws upon the game’s global nature and long history of representing cross-cultural exchange, as seen in the 13th century world that Calvino evokes in the framing of his work as an exchange between Marco Polo and Kublai Khan. This focus lends itself to both an examination of Calvino’s overarching medievalism in his late novel and a look to his self-reflection in the essay on Exactitude in his Lezioni americane, where the evocation of chess in his earlier novel takes on heightened significance in Calvino’s defining of his own writerly identity. I will argue that the representation of the game is essential in analyzing not only Calvino’s thoughts on language and systems of communication and control in this late period, but also his look to the cultural other that vacillates between essentializing and the forging of global affinities.

In an era characterized by ever-increasing data exchange across different networks, the importance of robust network security measures cannot be overemphasized. Cryptographic algorithms, on the other hand, perform a vital role in imparting security to the sensitive information during transmission, with S-Boxes (Substitution Boxes) serving as a fundamental component of symmetric-key ciphers. This study has endeavored to engineer a novel S-Box algorithm to bolster the network security. Moreover, the core focus of the suggested algorithm lies in enhancing the confidentiality, defiance to nefarious designs of cryptanalysis savvy, and overall cryptographic strength of data encryption in network communication. Random numbers spawned by the 5D multi-wing hyperchaotic system have been employed to design the proposed box. Apart from that, Rook —a chess piece has been used in this regard. Particularly, the random walk of Rook on the $16 \times 16$ hypothetical chessboard has been capitalized to sufficiently permute the data of the potential S-Box. Through a comprehensive performance evaluation and cryptographic analyses, the proposed S-Box algorithm exhibits superior resilience against diverse threats thus fortifying network security effectively. In particular, the state of the art security parameters like bijectivity, non-linearity (NL), strict-avalanche criterion (SAC), bit-independence criterion (BIC), linear probability (LP) and differential probability (DP) have been used. This work, no doubt, contributes significantly to the ever-evolving field of network security.
