The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of various drying methods: freeze drying, vacuum drying, convection drying, and convection-microwave drying at microwave powers of 50 W and 100 W, along with process temperatures (40 °C, 60 °C, and 80 °C), on the drying kinetics, selected physicochemical properties of dried celery stems, and their grindability. The Page model was employed to mathematically describe the drying kinetics across the entire measurement range. Convection-microwave drying significantly reduced the drying time compared to the other methods. The longest drying duration was observed with freeze drying at 40 °C. The product obtained through freeze drying at 40 °C exhibited the least alteration in color coordinates, the highest antioxidant capacity, and the greatest retention of chlorophylls and total carotenoids. At a specific temperature, the quality of the product obtained from vacuum drying was slightly lower compared to that from freeze drying. The most substantial changes in the physicochemical properties of the dried product were observed with convection-microwave drying at a microwave power of 100 W. The drying method selected had a significant impact on the energy consumption of grinding, average particle size, and the grinding energy index of the dried celery stems; these parameters worsened as the drying temperature increased. The objective of our study was to assess the effect of nitrate-reducing bacteria and natural nitrate source on the sensory properties of dried meat biltong. Appearance, colour on the cut, aroma, taste and juiciness, acidity, sweetness, and consistency were evaluated. The members of the panel gave their ratings between 1 and 5 according to the characteristics of the samples, with 1 being the lowest rating and 5 being the best rating. In the sensory evaluation of dried meat samples without oxygen absorber packaging, the group (P2) with bacterial culture, celery powder, and NaCl showed the highest scores for appearance, taste, juiciness, acidity, and consistency. Notably, P3 samples had significantly lower consistency scores compared to P2. Additionally, sample P1, with bacterial culture and NaCl, improved the colour on the cut compared to the negative control (C) with only NaCl. The best aroma and sweetness results were in the P3 group with curing salt, although these differences were not statistically significant (P = 0.05). The sensory evaluation of dried meat samples packaged with an oxygen absorber revealed that the combination of bacterial culture, celery powder, and NaCl (AP2) had the most positive influence on appearance, colour on the cut, and consistency. The group with the absorber and curing salt (AP3) showed improved aroma, taste, and juiciness. Acidity was primarily affected by the addition of bacterial culture and NaCl (AP1), as well as by AP2 and AP3. The most pleasing sweetness was achieved by adding bacterial culture and NaCl to samples with the absorber (AP1). Samples with the best consistency when packaged with the absorber were those with bacterial culture and celery powder (AP2). In summary, among dried meat samples with oxygen absorber, those with added curing salt (AP3) had the best overall sensory evaluation compared to the negative control with NaCl (AC). For samples without an oxygen absorber, the highest overall sensory scores were in the group with bacterial culture and celery powder, surpassing the control with NaCl (C). The use of an oxygen absorber and curing salt proved to be effective in the production of biltong, but replacing the curing salt with NaCl and the addition of celery powder and bacterial culture significantly improved the sensory evaluation compared to the other groups (except AP3). • Natural anticancer phytochemical compounds derived from plant materials have recently been used as a beginning point for drug discovery. • Salix mucronata and Triticum spelta have high direct antioxidant activities and highest apoptotic effect. • It could be attributed to their highest potential in suppressing NF-κB-mediated pro-oxidant and oncogene activation and enhancing transcriptional activation of NF-E2-related factor (Nrf2) mediated stimulation of antioxidant mediators. • Salix mucronata and Triticum spelta edible extracts represent promising antioxidant-dependent pro-apoptotic agents for eradicating different types of cancer cells. It has been known that free radical generation is associated with cancer; therefore, finding an efficient antioxidant therapy is highly mandated. It was discovered that some plants were very effective in treating diseases caused by oxidative stress; namely, Salix mucronata, Triticum spelta, Mentha, Apium graveolens, Coriandrum sativum, Cuminum cyminum, Senna alexandrina, Thymus vulgaris, Anethum graveolens, and Santalum album. Their components with functional properties (phenolic and flavonoids) were identified, along with their ability to scavenge radicals of nitrogen and oxygen, reduce power, and chelate metals. Accordingly, human lung (A549), breast (MDA-MB 231), and liver (Huh7) cancer cells were used to assess the antioxidant-mediated antiproliferative activity of these substances. To evaluate the apoptotic activity of previous plants in the treatment of cancer cells, flow cytometry analysis and caspase activity were employed. Moreover, redox-sensitive factors' fold changes in transcriptional activation and gene expression (nuclear factor kappa (NF-κ) B and nuclear factor E2-related factor 2 (Nrf2), respectively) were evaluated. Salix mucronata and Triticum spelta demonstrated the highest apoptosis-mediated antiproliferative effect. Their extracts were shown to be enriched with active polyphenolic chemicals (vanillic acid, gallic acid, protochateuic acid, and pyrochatechol) according to HPLC analysis, which may be responsible for their strong antiproliferative properties. Hence, further research employing an animal model is mandatory to fully understand these plant extracts, which provide a potential natural surrogate therapy for apoptosis-mediated cancer. Gummy candy is one of the main snacks for children, and conventional samples with high calorie illustrate no nutritional value; therefore, the aim of present research was to develop functional product on priority. Celery (Apium graveolens) puree (25%–50%), boswellia gum (10%–20%), lemon essential oil (0.25%–0.50%), and sugar (10%–20%) in two levels were considered for vegan gummy candy production. Based on central composite design, the 30 types of gummy candies were prepared; afterward, response surface methodology was applied to optimize results determined by texture (hardness, springiness, adhesiveness, gumminess, chewiness, and elasticity characteristics), physicochemical attributes (pH, sugar content, water activity, antioxidant function, and calorie restriction), and also sensory evaluation. In general, elevated concentration of celery puree and boswellia gum‐enhanced hardness, chewiness, and also gumminess for treated products. On the other hand, higher sugar with lemon essential oil improved adhesion, springiness, and elasticity features. More boswellia gum, celery, lemon essential oil, and reduction in sugar elevated water activity and also declined pH for treated samples. The celery puree, boswellia gum, and lemon essential oil significantly enhanced antioxidant function of treated gummy candies. According to attained results, sugar had a remarkable influence on acceptability and in treated samples calorie decreased. Based on all investigated factors, optimal formulation was achieved including 25% celery puree, 20% boswellia gum, 0.450% lemon essential oil, and 13.55% sugar. Smoke-water (SW) and Karrikinolide1 (KAR1) release dormancy and improve seed germination in many plant species. Therefore, we tested SW (1:2500 v/v) and KAR1 (10−7 M) to break the morphological dormancy of celery cultivar (Apium graveolens L.). In the first trial, seeds were subjected to a 21-day incubation period at 20 °C with SW and KAR1 applied as single treatments. KAR1 showed significantly improved germination (30.7%) as compared to SW (17.2%) and a water control (14.7%). In seed soaking experiments, SW, KAR1, and gibberellic acid (GA3) treatments showed higher germination percentages than the water control after 3 and 6 h of soaking. However, prolonged soaking (12 h) reduced germination percentages for all treatments, indicating a detrimental effect. Analysis of KAR1 content dynamics in 7-day- and 21-day-old celery seeds indicated its prolonged effects on germination and dormancy alleviation. Phytohormones, including auxins in 7-day-old and cytokinins in 7-day- and 21-day-old celery seedlings, along with their precursors and metabolites, were analyzed using ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS) after treatment with KAR1 and SW. The analysis of auxin levels in 7-day-old seeds revealed a negative correlation between seed germination and auxin (indole-3-acetic acid, IAA) content. Notably, it was found that KAR1-treated seeds significantly reduced IAA levels in all treatments. SW and KAR1 did not significantly affect cytokinin levels during celery germination except for N6-Isopentenyladenine. Hence, further research is needed to understand their precise role in celery seed germination. This work will improve our understanding of the role of bioactive compounds from plant-derived smoke and how they regulate hormonal responses and improve germination efficiency in celery. Medicinal plants harbor numerous natural bioactive compounds with therapeutic potential, utilized in the synthesis of various drug formulations. While the diverse benefits of herbal formulations have been extensively researched, a toxicity assessment is crucial to establish a wide margin of safety for the therapeutic application of this polyherbal formulation. The recent study aimed to assess the phytochemical profile and potential toxic effects of an aqueous extract derived from a polyherbal formulation containing Petroselinum crispum L., Coriandrum sativum L., and Apium graveolens L. The investigation involved acute and sub-acute toxicity studies conducted in male and female Swiss albino mice, as well as adult rats. High-performance liquid chromatography analysis revealed a rich composition of phytochemical compounds in the extract. In acute toxicity assessments, oral administration of the extract up to 14 g/kg showed no signs of toxicity or fatalities in mice. However, intraperitoneal administration resulted in dose-dependent toxicity, with a calculated LD 50 of 11.8 g/kg. Sub-acute toxicity studies in rats over 28 days showed no significant changes in organ weights, hematological, or biochemical parameters, except for a minor decrease in WBC count. Histopathological examination revealed no morphological disturbances in the liver and kidneys, indicating a wide margin of safety for therapeutic use. Following a request from the European Commission, EFSA was asked to deliver a scientific opinion on the safety and efficacy of an essential oil obtained from the fruit of Apium graveolens L. (celery seed oil), when used as a sensory additive in feed and water for drinking for all animal species. The EFSA Panel on Additives and Products or Substances used in Animal Feed (FEEDAP) Panel concluded that the use of celery seed oil is of no concern up to the following concentrations in complete feed: 1.6 mg/kg for chickens for fattening, 2.3 mg/kg for laying hens, 2.1 mg/kg for turkeys for fattening, 2.8 mg/kg for piglets, 3.3 mg/kg for pigs for fattening, 4.1 mg/kg for sows, 6.5 mg/kg for veal calves (milk replacer), 6.2 mg/kg for cattle for fattening, sheep, goats and horses, 4.0 mg/kg for dairy cows, 2.5 mg/kg for rabbits, 6.8 mg/kg for salmonids and 7.2 mg/kg for dogs. These conclusions were extrapolated to other physiologically related species. For cats, ornamental fish and other species, no conclusion can be drawn. The use of celery seed oil in animals feed is not expected to pose concern for the consumers and for the environment. The additive under assessment should be considered as an irritant to skin and eyes, and as a respiratory and skin sensitiser. When handling the essential oil, exposure of unprotected users to perillaldehyde and bergapten may occur. Therefore, to reduce the risk, the exposure of the users should be minimised. Since A. graveolens and its preparations were recognised to flavour food and its function in feed would be essentially the same as that in food, no further demonstration of efficacy was considered necessary. The Celery (Apium graveolens Linn.) were hot air dried at 60, 70, and 80°C. Drying temperatures had no significant impact on the bulk density, water holding capacity, or swelling capacity of celery powder. High drying temperatures (80°C) generated a significant color shift, whereas antioxidants were decreased at a low temperature (60°C). Thus, the temperature of 70°C was recommended because the powder had satisfying green color, high phenolic content (597.35 mg GAE/100 g), and DPPH inhibition (39.37%). Subsequently, celery samples were dried using hot air drying (at 70°C) and freeze-drying and the juice was foam mat dried. The foam mat dried powder had less water holding capacity, whereas the hot air and freeze-dried powders had similar characteristics. But the freeze-dried powder had a pleasant green color, low bulk density, high swelling and water holding capacity, and remarkably high phenolic content (718.00 mg GAE/100 g) and DPPH inhibition (64.14%). Hypertension is a highly prevalent population-level disease that represents an important risk factor for several cardiovascular complications and occupies a leading position in mortality statistics. Antihypertensive therapy includes a wide variety of drugs. Additionally, the potential antihypertensive and cardioprotective effects of several phytotherapy products have been evaluated, as these could also be a valuable therapeutic option for the prevention, improvement or treatment of hypertension and its complications. The present review includes an evaluation of the cardioprotective and antihypertensive effects of garlic, Aloe vera, green tea, Ginkgo biloba, berberine, ginseng, Nigella sativa, Apium graveolens, thyme, cinnamon and ginger, and their possible interactions with antihypertensive drugs. A literature search was undertaken via the PubMed, Google Scholar, Embase and Cochrane databases. Background: Elevated blood pressure above the threshold is known as hypertension and is a contributing factor to cardiovascular disease. Lack of knowledge and inadequate physical activity were identified as the main factors contributing to hypertension among 36 individuals in the Padukuhan Jomblangan community of Bantul. This phenomenon occurs not only in old age but also in individuals of productive age. If health intervention is not carried out, sufferers may increase. Objective: To encourage public awareness regarding the prevention of hypertension through blood pressure-checking activities and health education. Method: This program aims to assist individuals with hypertension in Padukuhan Jomblangan, Bantul. To address hypertension, the program utilized health education, blood pressure screenings, and the incorporation of celery plants into family gardens. Health education is carried out through lectures, discussions and questions and answers. Data from blood pressure examinations is processed by comparing it with standards set by the Ministry of Health. Results: 13 people were identified as having level 2 hypertension, and 11 people were identified as having level 1 hypertension. The community was motivated to combat high blood pressure through physical activity, celery consumption, and growing celery at home for its medicinal properties. Conclusion: Stakeholders and Community Health Centers must revitalize NCDs Health Program to prevent NCDs. Furthermore, people can add celery as a family medicinal plant to reduce hypertension. Thiamethoxam and beta-cyfluthrin are commonly used insecticides for aphid control in greenhouse celery. It is of great significance to reveal their dissipation and accumulation characteristics for evaluating their dietary intake risks and optimizing application methods. Based on this, gas chromatography-tandem triple quadrupole mass spectrometry was used in the multi-reaction monitoring mode of mass spectrometry, The dynamics of residue digestion of two insecticides under three repeated spraying methods (combination I: thiamethoxam + beta-cyfluthrin, alternating II: thiamethoxam -betacyfluthrin - thiamethoxam, alternating III: beta-cyfluthrin - thiamethoxam - beta-cyfluthrin) and assessed the risk of chronic dietary intake. The results showed under the three continuous spraying methods, the original deposition amount was the highest after the second spraying (22 d after planting) and the lowest after the first spraying; and the celery leaf area index may be an important factor causing this phenomenon. According to the first-order kinetic equations, the digestion half-life of thiamethoxam and beta-cyfluthrin were 2.95-3.63 d and 2.33-3.11 d, respectively. Comparative analysis of residues after the safety interval of 7 d after three repeated spraying, residue of thiamethoxam and beta-cyfluthrin in combination I was higher than maximum residue limit (MRL) except for the first spraying(thiamethoxam:1mg/kg; beta-cyfluthrin:0.5 mg/kg); However, the residue of beta-cyfluthrin in alternating III exceeds the MRL after the last spraying. Since thiamethoxam could be metabolized to clothianidin, dynamic residue of clothianidin was determined. The highest concentration was obtained at 3-5 d after spraying. However, the residue of clothianidin was lower than MRL(0.04 mg/kg) after the pre-harvest interval (PHI); The results of risk assessment of dietary intake showed that in this standardized residue test in Shaoxing, Zhejiang Province, thiamethoxam and beta-cyfluthrin were combined and applied alternatly for three times. After the PHI of 7 d, the contribution rate of thiamethoxam and beta-cyfluthrin residues in celery samples collected to risk quotient (0.11%~3.76%) was lower than 100%, and the long-term dietary intake risk was at an acceptable level. The results showed that compared with combined application, pesticide residues could be reduced to some extent by alternate spraying, and the alternate spraying of thiamethoxam - bata-cyfluthrin - thiamethoxam showed the lowest residue level and contribution rate of dietary intake risk, which was the relatively best application strategy. Background: Tungsten (W) is an emerging heavy metal pollutant, yet research remains scarce on the biomonitor and sensitive biomarkers for W contamination. Methods: In this study, celery and pepper were chosen as study subjects and subjected to exposure cultivation in solutions with five different levels of W. The physiological and biochemical toxicities of W on these two plants were systematically analyzed. The feasibility of utilizing celery and pepper as biomonitor organisms for W contamination was explored and indicative biomarkers were screened. Results: The results indicated that W could inhibit plants' root length, shoot height, and fresh weight while concurrently promoting membrane lipid peroxidation. Additionally, W enhanced the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), peroxidase (POD), and total antioxidant capacity (TAOC) to counteract oxidative damage. From a physiological perspective, pepper exhibited potential as a biomonitor for W contamination. Biochemical indicators suggested that SOD could serve as a sensitive biomarker for W in celery, while TAOC and POD were more suitable for the roots and leaves of pepper. In conclusion, our study investigated the toxic effects of W on celery and pepper, contributing to the understanding of W's environmental toxicity. Due to climate change and exacerbated population growth, the search for new sustainable strategies that allow for greater food productivity and that provide greater nutritional quality has become imperative. One strategy for addressing this problem is the combined use of fertilization with a reduced dose of nitrogen and biostimulants. Celery processing produces a large amount of waste with its concomitant pollution. Therefore, it is necessary to address the valorization of its byproducts. Our results revealed reductions in the biomass, Na, P, Mn, B, sugars, and proteins in the byproducts and increased lipid peroxidation, Fe (all celery parts), and K (byproducts) when the N supplied was reduced. Plants inoculated with Azotobacter salinestris obtained a greater biomass, a higher accumulation of K (byproducts), a build-up of sugars and proteins, reduced concentrations of P, Cu, Mn, B, Fe (petioles), and Zn (byproducts), and reduced lipid peroxidation. The application of Se at 8 μM reinforced the beneficial effect obtained after inoculation with Azotobacter salinestris. In accordance with our results, edible celery parts are recommended as an essential ingredient in the daily diet. Celery seeds contain various bioactive compounds and are commonly used as a spice and nutritional supplement in people's daily lives. The quality of celery seeds sold on the market varies, and their regions of production are unclear. This study evaluated the metabolites of Chinese celery seeds from three production regions using HS-SPME-GC-MS, HS-GC-IMS, and UPLC-ESI-MS/MS. The results indicate that GC-IMS analysis obtained a metabolic profile different from that detected using GC-MS. Terpenoids, polyphenols, coumarins, and phthalides are the main bioactive compounds in celery seeds. The production region significantly affects the metabolic characteristics of celery seeds. Based on GC-MS data, GC-IMS data, and LC-MS data, the variation analysis screened 6, 12, and 8 metabolites as potential characteristic metabolites in celery seeds related to the production region, respectively. According to the aromatic characteristics of the characteristic metabolites, seeds from the HCQ region and HZC region have a strong herbal, woody, celery, and turpentine aroma. The concentration of secondary metabolites was highest in the seeds from the HCQ region followed by the HZC region, and it was the lowest in the JJC region. Altogether, this study investigates how geographical origins influence the metabolomic profile of celery seeds. This study evaluated the salt tolerance in 40 celery germplasm resources to clarify the different salt tolerances of celery germplasm. A gradient treatment with different concentrations of NaCl solutions (100, 200, and 300 mmol·L−1) was used to simulate salt stress. After 15 days of salt treatment, 14 indicators related to plant growth, physiology, and biochemistry were determined. The results showed that different celery varieties responded differently to salt stress. Notably, there were significant variations in below-ground dry weight, root–crown ratio, antioxidant enzyme activity, and soluble protein content among the accessions under salt stress. Principal component analysis was used to identify important indices for evaluating salt tolerance, including plant height, spread, content of soluble protein, and so on. A comprehensive evaluation was conducted utilizing the salt damage index, principal component analysis, affiliation function analysis, and cluster analysis. The 40 celery germplasms were classified into five highly salt-tolerant, seven salt-tolerant, fifteen moderately salt-tolerant, nine salt-sensitive, and four highly salt-sensitive germplasms. SHHXQ, MXKQ, XBQC, XQ, and TGCXBQ were highly salt-tolerant germplasms, and BFMSGQ, HNXQ, ZQ, and MGXQW were highly salt-sensitive germplasms. The results of this study provide a reference for the variety of celery cultivation in saline areas and lay a foundation for the selection and breeding of salt-tolerant varieties of celery. To clarify the impact of continuous dark stress on lignin and cellulose synthesis in celery, shade-tolerant celery varieties were screened. Yellow celery variety 'Qianhuang No.1' and green celery variety 'Qianlv No.1' were separately grown in vegetable greenhouses. Dark treatments were applied using PVC shading sleeves for 4, 8, 12, and 16 d after celery had grown 10–13 true leaf blades. This study aimed to investigate the impact of varying periods of dark treatment on the morphological characteristics, lignin accumulation, and cellulose accumulation in celery. The results showed that dark treatment led to celery yellowing, a reduced stem thickness, and an increased plant height. Analysis of lignin and cellulose contents, as well as the expression of related genes, showed that dark treatment caused down-regulation of AgLAC, AgC3′H, AgCCR, AgPOD and AgCAD genes, leading to changes in lignin accumulation. Dark treatment inhibited the expression of the AgCesA6 gene, thus affecting cellulose synthesis. Under dark conditions, the expression of AgF5H and AgHCT genes had little effect on lignin content in celery, and the expression of the AgCslD3 gene had little effect on cellulose content. Analysis of morphological characteristics, lignin accumulation and cellulose accumulation after different lengths of dark treatment demonstrated that 'Qianlv No.1' is a shade-tolerant variety in contrast to 'Qianhuang No.1'. This study rigorously assesses the physicochemical, heavy metal concentrations, and bacteriological parameters of celery and its irrigation water across three rural areas of Sulaymaniyah city, Iraq. The investigation revealed that irrigation water's pH ranged significantly from 6.9 to 8.9. Notably, phosphate concentrations (PO43−) exceeded permissible levels in Tanjaro and Kanaswra across all seasons, with the highest recorded concentration being 10.4 mg L−1 during autumn in Kanaswra. Conversely, sulfate (SO42−) and sodium (Na+) concentrations remained within standard limits, with SO42− peaking at 115.1 mg L−1 in Tanjaro during summer. Celery samples reflected high Na+ concentrations in some seasons, with values exceeding 570 mg·kg in Kanaswra during summer. Heavy metal analysis indicated remarkably low levels in irrigation water, yet celery samples from Tanjaro and Aziz Awa exhibited Pb concentrations above the safety threshold of 0.3 mg·kg in all seasons. Furthermore, bacterial contamination, including total aerobic count and coliform in both water and celery, surpassed standard limits, highlighting significant health risks. Rotational strip intercropping involves the strategic combination of stubble intercropping and the rotational placement of intercropped strips, which can improve crop yield. Here, we evaluated the effects of rotational strip bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) and celery (Apium graveolens L.) intercropping with bed ratios of 1:1 and 2:2 on crop yield, soil microbial community and nutrition. The 1:1 ratio of rotational strip bean and celery intercropping had a higher yield than the 2:2 ratio. The 1:1 rotational strip intercropping markedly improved the nitrate nitrogen and available phosphorus contents of the beans, and the nitrate nitrogen and available potassium contents of the celery. The 2:2 rotational strip intercropping reduced the bacterial α diversity of the beans, and the 1:1 and 2:2 rotational strip intercropping enhanced the fungal α diversity of both the beans and the celery. Both planting patterns also altered the microbial communities found on the bean and celery plants. Microorganisms enriched in the rhizosphere of the bean and celery plants significantly increased the soil nutrient content and yield in the 1:1 rotational strip intercropping, and included the genera Achromobacter, Luteibacter, Stenotrophomonas, Fusarium, Flavobacterium and Preussia in the bean rhizosphere, and Alternaria, Arthrographis and Pluteus, Sphingopyxis and Clostridium_sensu_stricto_1 in the celery rhizosphere. Background. System pharmacological approaches play important roles in drug discovery and development and in biomolecular exploration to investigate the multitarget therapeutic effects of phytochemicals for the treatment of acute and chronic ailments. Objectives. The aim of the study was to apply a system pharmacological approach to investigate the multitarget therapeutic effects of furocoumarins of Apium graveolens L. for the treatment of kidney disease. Methods. Several furocoumarins of Apium graveolens were screened from online databases. Network biology and poly-pharmacology analyses were performed to investigate the multitarget therapeutic effect of furocoumarins. The potential metabolites that showed significant interactions with various genes were selected for in silico docking analysis with CASP-3 and SOD proteins. In silico ADME analysis was also performed to investigate the pharmacokinetic behavior of targeted furocoumarins. Results. Out of thirteen furocoumarins selected for analysis, six showed partial or significant interaction with SOD and CASP-3 proteins. These metabolites may alleviate kidney dysfunction by reducing oxidative and inflammatory stress, regulating apoptosis, slowing down the progression of diabetic nephropathy, and reducing hypertension and glomerular vascular rigidity. In silico docking analysis revealed bergapten as a potential therapeutic agent for kidney disease treatment. In silico docking analysis showed anglicine, imperatorin, and sphondin exhibited strong interaction with CASP-3 and SOD with binding energy −6.5, −7.2, −6.5 and −6.8, −6.2 −5.7 kcal/mol, respectively. These components exhibited greater conventional hydrogen bonding with CASP-3 and SOD than other furocoumarins. Furthermore, in silico ADME analysis of metabolites showed that all furocoumarins have a highly lipophilic nature, good skin permeability, and GI absorption, as well as good blood-brain permeability (BBB). Conclusion. Furocoumarins reduce kidney dysfunction and associated pathophysiological complications via the reduction of glomerular vascular rigidity, diabetic nephropathy, and oxidative and inflammatory stress. The purpose of this study was to determine the content of certain phenolic compounds, antioxidant activity, pressing efficiency, extract content, and sugars in celeriac juices obtained from the pulp after α-amylase treatment from Aspergillus oryzae. The test material consisted of peeled and unpeeled celery pulp kept at a temperature of 25 °C with and without the enzyme for a period of 30 and 60 min. The juices obtained from them were analyzed for the content of selected phenolic acids and flavonoids using the UPLC-PDA-ESI-MS/MS method, for antioxidant activity measured using the ABTS˙+ and DPPH˙ method, and for the total polyphenol content using the F-C method. Additionally, the juice pressing efficiency, the extract content using the refractometer method, and the sugar content using the HPLC method were checked. Significantly higher antioxidant activity, pressing yield, and average content of caffeic acid glucoside, quinic acid, kaempferol-3,7-di-O-glucoside, and chrysoeriol-7-O-apiosylglucoside were obtained in juices from peeled celery. Maceration of the pulp with amylase resulted in a significant reduction in antioxidant activity compared to control samples. An is-total increase of 17–41% in total flavonoid content was observed in all juices tested after treatment with the enzyme for 30 and 60 min, and the phenolic acid content increased by 4–41% after treatment of the pulp with amylase for 60 min. The 60 min holding of the pulp at 25 °C, including with the enzyme, was shown to decrease the antioxidant activity and the content of quinic acid, ferulic acid, and chrysoriol-7-O-apiose-glucoside in the juices tested compared to the samples held for 30 min, while the content of other phenolic acids and flavonoids increased. Objectives: There is a strong association among risk factors for oral cancer (ORCA), such as smoking, alcohol consumption, fiber intake, and red meat intake. The apparent synergistic effects reported in previous observational studies may also underestimate the independent effects. Our study aims to further explore the potential etiology and causality of oral cancer. Materials and methods: This study used the genome-wide associations study database (GWAS) in European populations for Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis to explore exposure factors associated with ORCA and detect the genetic causality between these exposures and ORCA risk. Results: Our results demonstrated that in univariate MR analysis, the five exposure factors (celery intake, average weekly beer and cider intake, spirits intake, and pork intake) were risk factors, and oily fish intake was a safety factor, but in multivariate MR analysis, pork intake had the greatest impact on oral cancer when the five food/drink intakes were simultaneously consumed. Conclusions: The causal relationship between the five exposure factors (oily fish intake, celery intake, pork intake, average weekly beer and cider intake, and spirits intake) and oral cancer was analyzed. The causal effects of pork on oral cancer may be underestimated. Clinical relevance: Prevention of oral cancer requires better education about lifestyle-related risk factors, and improved awareness and tools for early diagnosis. Colitis is a growing gastrointestinal inflammation condition that affect individual all around the globe. No specific treatment for colitis condition is available at the moment and this disease can develop into colorectal cancer. Phytochemical in Apium graveolens (AG) are potential as anti-inflammation and antioxidant. This study aimed to investigate the potency of AG ethanolicextract (EES) in improving acetic acid (AA) - induced colitis in rats. Rats with colitis induced by acetic acid (4%) were treated with 5-aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA) as positive control, and several concentrations (100, 300, and 900 mg/kg) of EES. Colitis severity was determined by scoring of macroscopic condition including body weight, colon, and faeces condition. In addition, colon tissues conditions were observed with haematoxylin-eosin staining. Colon permeability is determined by measuring urine glucose level. The observation of the change in Enterobacteriaceae population is investigated using PCR. Apium graveolens ethanolic-extract shows highest improvement of colitis condition at concentration of 900 mg/kg, based on macroscopic observation and disease severity index. At this dose, no blood existed on the faeces and the faeces consistency is solid. Group receiving lower dose of EES still shows blood existence and less solid faeces. The EES dose dependently return the population of Enterobacteriaceae which increase upon AA treatment. Apium graveolens is potential to be use as preventive or treatment for colitis. An experiment was conducted during October 2022–January 2023 at Defence Institute of Bio-energy Research-Defence Research and Development Organisation, Haldwani, Nainital, Uttarakhand to evaluate the growth, quality production and yield of celery under the hydroponic, soilless and soil conditions. Higher crop productivity of celery crop was found under hydroponic system as compared to other medium. The experiment revealed that there is a better provision for vertical space utilization and protection from soil-borne disease under hydroponic farming as compared to traditional farming. This experiment paved a new way for the need and future perspective of hydroponic technology to achieve the desirable quality of vegetable crop production by using modern farming technology such as hydroponics on a small and medium scale. The present experiment also summarized that this farming plays an important role in crop production to maintain market growth in coming years. In this respect, hydroponics is an emerging technology which play a vital role in urban and pre-urban area and positively effective in the ways to promote healthy and developed future for the planet and its people.

Headspace solid phase microextraction-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (HS-SPME-GC-MS) and electronic nose (E-nose) were performed to investigate change of volatile compounds in celery leaves during storage at 20.0 ℃. The results indicated that a total of 108 volatile compounds were identified by HS-SPME-GC-MS, mainly including monoterpenes (43.2%~52.92%) and phthalides (19.93%~28.97%), in which D-limonene was abundant (6600.64~48566.12 μg/kg). The total volatile substance content of fresh celery was 165682.48 μg/kg, which decreased by 40.92% after 9 days of storage. The percent of monoterpenes and phthalides decreased by 9.72% and increased by 8.98% respectively during storage. In celery leaves, 31 substances were detected according to OAV>1. There were 31 kinds of the same characteristic volatile substances during 0~7 d and the number of characteristic volatile substances decreased to 29 at 9 d. During storage, the total OAV value decreased. The cluster analysis confirmed that the celery leaves were mainly minty and grassy odour during 0~3 d, and sweet, wood and camphorated odour at 7 d. After the 9th day, the aroma of celery leaves was spicy and herbal odour. The PCA of E-nose response data showed that E-nose could distinguish the aroma of celery leaves during different storage period. Herbal tea is a refreshing drink made from dried leaves, flowers, seeds, fruit, wood, and other plants that have health benefits. The purpose of this study was to determine the ratio effect of celery with manalagi apple peel and drying time, to produce the best celery herbal tea. This study was designed using a factorial completely randomized design with 2 factors: the ratio of celery with apple peel [100:0; 75:25; 50:50; 25:75; 0:100] and drying time [2, 3, 4 hours] at 50 oC. The parameters analysed were moisture content, vitamin C content, total phenol, color, and organoleptic values (aroma, and general acceptance). The parameter observed for the best quality samples was antioxidant content. The results showed that the ratio of celery with manalagi apple peel had a highly significant effect on color oHue, aroma, and general acceptance of organoleptic. The drying time of teas had a highly significant effect on vitamin C content. The interaction of the ratio had a significant effect on the color value (L) and a highly significant effect on total phenol. The results showed that the first and the second factors had a highly significant effect on moisture content, total phenol, and color value (L). The choice of drying method can influence the final quality of the tea, making it important to select the appropriate technique.

Background. The incidence of hypertension is increasing significantly on a global scale, and it is considered the leading cause of heart disease and death. Despite the availability of hypotensive drugs, they have many side effects that decrease adherence to treatments and lead to uncontrolled blood pressure. Studies have revealed that celery contains bioactive compounds that oppose hypotensive effect. Methods. A thorough literature review was conducted using Scopus, PubMed, and Google Scholar databases. To identify relevant studies on the topic, our search strategy employed keywords such as "celery," "Apium gravenols L," "hypertension," "high blood pressure," "apigenin," "antihypertensive," and "hypotensive." The search was limited to articles published between January 2013 and December 2023. The inclusion criteria were original research articles that involved both animal and human subjects, published in English, and reported results applicable to the subject of this review. Review articles or articles in the form of theses or books were excluded. Results. The available evidence revealed that celery enhances blood pressure parameters. Clinical trials clarified that celery possesses its effect through many bioactive compounds, specifically 3-n-butylphthalide and apigenin. Based on animal and human studies, celery seems to elicit blood pressure regulation mainly by the vasodilatory, diuretic, and calcium channel-blocking properties. Furthermore, celery seed extract seems to exert a bradycardia effect. Conclusion. The current literature review showed a considerable number of studies on the hypertensive models, which confirmed that celery and its extracts are effective hypotensive agents. Celery (Apium graveolens L.) is a kind of green leaf vegetable with a large consumption demand in the food industry. It is a commonly used material in quick-frozen food stuffing such as dumplings and steamed stuffed. Fresh celery leaf blades and petioles are rich in photosynthetic pigments including chlorophyll and carotenoid, their contents are closely related to the quality of celery and its products. In order to explore the effects of freezing and thawing temperature and thawing time on the degradation of photosynthetic pigments in celery leaf blades and petioles, the changes in photosynthetic pigments during thawing storage were measured under different freezing and thawing temperatures. The results showed that lower freezing and thawing temperatures were beneficial to the preservation of photosynthetic pigments in celery leaf blades and petioles, and the loss of photosynthetic pigments enhanced with the increase in thawing temperature and thawing time. Under the cold storage condition of −80 °C, the loss rate of pigment substances can be reduced by nearly 20% compared with that of −18 °C, and −80 °C and 4 °C could be the best temperature combination of freezing and thawing. The content and degradation rate of photosynthetic pigments in celery leaf blades were higher than that in petioles during thawing, with a total chlorophyll loss rate reaching 35% during 6 to 12 h after thawing. The increase in temperature difference between freezing and thawing could aggravate the damage to the cell structure and the degradation of the pigment, as chlorophyll is more sensitive to temperature changes, and the degradation rate is significantly higher than that of carotenoids. From the perspective of delaying the degradation of photosynthetic pigments, the results of this study will provide potential references for the reasonable configuration of freezing and thawing temperatures in the process of storage and transportation of celery products. Background: Gastric ulcers represent a worldwide health problem, characterized by erosions that affect the mucous membrane of the stomach and may even reach the muscular layer, leading to serious complications. Numerous natural products have been assessed as anti-ulcerogenic agents, and have been considered as new approaches for treatment or prevention of gastric ulcers. The present research investigated the preventive benefits of Apium graveolens L. (Apiaceae), known as celery, seed extract towards indomethacin-induced ulceration of the stomach in rats. Methods: Metabolomic profiling, employing liquid chromatography coupled to high-resolution electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (LC-HR-ESI–MS), was implemented with the aim of investigating the chemical profile of the seeds. Histopathological analysis of gastric tissues, as well as assessment of numerous inflammatory cytokines and oxidative stress indicators, confirmed the in vivo evaluation. Results: The prior treatment with A. graveolens seed extract resulted in a substantial reduction in the ulcer index when compared to the indomethacin group, indicating an improvement in stomach mucosal injury. Moreover, the gastroprotective effect was demonstrated through examination of the oxidative stress biomarkers which was significantly attenuated upon pre-treatment with A. graveolens seed extract. Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), a fundamental angiogenic factor that stimulates angiogenesis, was markedly inhibited by indomethacin. A. graveolens seed extract restored this diminished level of VEGF. The dramatic reductions in NF-κB protein levels indicate a considerable attenuation of the indomethacin-induced IKκB/NF-κB p65 signaling cascade. These activities were also correlated to the tentatively featured secondary metabolites including, phenolic acids, coumarins and flavonoids, previously evidenced to exert potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities. According to our network pharmacology study, the identified metabolites annotated 379 unique genes, among which only 17 genes were related to gastric ulcer. The PTGS2, MMP2 and PTGS1 were the top annotated genes related to gastric ulcer. The top biological pathway was the VEGF signaling pathway. Conclusion: A. graveolens seed extract possesses significant anti-ulcer activity, similar to famotidine, against gastric lesions induced by indomethacin in rats. Speakers sometimes make word production errors, such as mistakenly saying pelican instead of flamingo. This study explored which properties of an error influence the likelihood of its selection over the target word. Analysing real-word errors in speeded picture naming, we investigated whether, relative to the target, naming errors were more typical representatives of the semantic category, were associated with more semantic features, and/or were semantically more closely related to the target than its near semantic neighbours were on average. Results indicated that naming errors tended to be more typical category representatives and possess more semantic features than the targets. Moreover, while not being the closest semantic neighbours, errors were largely near semantic neighbours of the targets. These findings suggest that typicality, number of semantic features, and semantic similarity govern activation levels in the production system, and we discuss possible mechanisms underlying these effects in the context of word production theories. Crop wild relatives (CWR) represent valuable sources of traits that can enhance the abiotic and biotic stress tolerance of crops. Due to climate change and expansion of land use, they may suffer from population decline, which increases the risk of losing these resources. The in situ conservation of CWR is receiving growing attention to preserve their intraspecific diversity. In contrast to the safeguarding of seeds ex situ, the preservation of taxa in their natural habitat facilitates the development of new adaptations to changing environmental conditions. However, studies aiming at the establishment of their in situ conservation are rare. Therefore, we identified and genotyped Helosciadium nodiflorum occurrences in Germany. Helosciadium nodiflorum is an endangered CWR of cultivated celery (Apium graveolens). For 20 occurrences the number of individuals, the number of sexually reproducing individuals, and potential threats were recorded. Genetic differences were examined using 17 newly developed simple sequence repeats (SSR). Population genetic analyses, like the inference of the compositional genetic differentiation, of population structure, and a Discriminant Analysis of Principal Components were conducted. The analyses revealed that most occurrences were genetically distinct. Geographically closely located populations are often also genetically more similar. Several populations revealed a composite genome indicative of hybridizations between distinct populations. Populations that experienced fixation were also identified. Based on the genetic diversity, the location in different ecogeographic units, and the support of local stakeholders, we recommend the establishment of 15 genetic reserves for H. nodiflorum in Germany. Main conclusion: Integration of genomic approaches like whole genome sequencing, functional genomics, evolutionary genomics, and CRISPR/Cas9-based genome editing has accelerated the improvement of crop plants including leafy vegetables like celery in the face of climate change. The anthropogenic climate change is a real peril to the existence of life forms on our planet, including human and plant life. Climate change is predicted to be a significant threat to biodiversity and food security in the coming decades and is rapidly transforming global farming systems. To avoid the ghastly future in the face of climate change, the elucidation of shifts in the geographical range of plant species, species adaptation, and evolution is necessary for plant scientists to develop climate-resilient strategies. In the post-genomics era, the increasing availability of genomic resources and integration of multifaceted genomics elements is empowering biodiversity conservation action, restoration efforts, and identification of genomic regions adaptive to climate change. Genomics has accelerated the true characterization of crop wild relatives, genomic variations, and the development of climate-resilient varieties to ensure food security for 10 billion people by 2050. In this review, we have summarized the applications of multifaceted genomic tools, like conservation genomics, whole genome sequencing, functional genomics, genome editing, pangenomics, in the conservation and adaptation of plant species with a focus on celery, an aromatic and medicinal Apiaceae vegetable. Chloridazon (CLZ) is a selective herbicide used in the control of annual broadleaf weeds. The misuse or abuse of CLZ may result in the accumulation of CLZ in crops and water, which can pose a risk to human health. In this study, a hapten of CLZ with three carbon spacer arms was designed and a highly sensitive and specific antibody against CLZ was prepared with a half-maximal inhibitory concentration of 0.630 ng mL−1 and a linear range of 0.181–2.195 ng mL−1.Based on this antibody, we developed an immunochromatographic assay (ICA) strip for the detection of CLZ in oranges and celery. Under optimized conditions, the visual limit of detection was 2 ng mL−1 and 10 ng mL−1 in oranges and celery, respectively, and the cut-off value was 50 ng mL−1. In CLZ-spiked samples and the recovery test, the results of the ICA strip were consistent with those of indirect competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ic-ELISA). Therefore, the ICA strip developed in our study represents an efficient and reliable method for the rapid screening of CLZ in oranges and celery. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Eastern and south-eastern Serbia is a cultural crossroads between East and West, and due to its economic underdevelopment, the traditional use of medicinal plants remains crucial in healthcare even today. This study aimed to collect and preserve ethnopharmacological knowledge about musculoskeletal, respiratory, circulatory, and genitourinary disorders, which are common in the local population. Information was collected using semi-structured anonymous ethnobotanical interviews with location informants. According to respondents, monographs of official international authorities (European Pharmacopoeia, ESCOP, WHO, EMA, and PDR) have been reviewed to confirm the traditional use of medicinal plants. Out of a total of 161 respondents, 58 (36%) declared that they use plants to treat musculoskeletal diseases, 147 (91.3%) to treat respiratory diseases, 113 (70.19%) to treat circulatory diseases, and 25 (15.53%) to treat genitourinary diseases. Among the plants that are traditionally used for the treatment of diseases of these organ systems, the following are highlighted for future research: Verbascum phlomoides, Inula helenium, and Rosmarinus officinalis for musculoskeletal; Ocimum basilicum, Robinia pseudoacacia and Primula vulgaris for respiratory; Urtica dioica, Allium ursinum, and Rosa canina for circulatory and Apium graveolens, Zea mays and Calendula officinalis for treatment of genitourinary system. Improvement of sheep health and productivity has become a global goal. An effective house must provide adequate space, shelter, and protection from climatic changes and stress. Some plants such as thyme (Thymus vulgaris) and celery (Apium graveolens) could alleviate stressors. Hence, this investigation was conducted to determine the role of thyme and celery seed mixture (TCM) in improving the behavior and performance of lactating Ossimi ewes at diverse housings during autumn and winter. Forty lactating ewes (2 years old and 48 ± 1.5 kg average body weight) were randomly equally distributed into two semi-shaded buildings (SSB) (20 ewes each). These were roofed with a concrete slab 40 cm thick and 5 m high which was covered with three rows of rice straw bales as thermal insulation. It had natural dirt areas to the north and south. Ten ewes were fed a basal diet, and the others received a basal diet containing TCM (10 gm thyme and 10 gm celery/head/day). Similarly, 20 ewes were treated in a fully-shaded building (FSB) which was roofed with a layer of tin 5 m high and had natural flooring to the west and east. These ewes were fed a basal diet + TCM for 1 month pre-lambing and 2 months post-lambing. Both behavior and weight were recorded bi-weekly. Blood samples were collected monthly to measure oxidative stress indicator reduced glutathione (GSH), malondialdehyde, total protein, glucose, gene expression of nuclear factor 2 linked to erythroid 2 (Nrf2), and interleukin 2. Cumulative feed intake was calculated, and milk samples were collected for 2 months after lambing until weaning to measure moisture, ash, total protein, lactose, non-solid fat (NSF), total solids, fat, and antioxidant capacity of milk (free radical and inhibition factor). The findings revealed that sheep exhibited better feeding behavior in the FSB and the oxidative stress indicator was lower than in the SSB. TCM enhanced feeding behavior and decreased the oxidative stress indicator (reduced GSH) in the SSB. Additionally, it increased total protein and dam body weight (at the 6th week) in the FSB and improved feed intake in both buildings. Thyme and celery have antioxidant capacities in milk. Hence, the present data suggest that adding TCM to the basal diet could reduce the stress of climatic changes on lactating ewes and improve animal behavior and immunity leading to enhanced production. Tropical almonds (Terminalia catappa L) are food ingredients that can be developed into probiotic drinks like yogurt. The addition of celery leaf extract in to yoghurt can affect the growth of the bacteria. Celery leaf contain natural antimicrobial compounds that can influence bacterial growth. However, celery also contain bioactive compounds that can improve the functional properties of food. This study aimed to determine the antioxidant activity of tropical almond yogurt with the addition of celery leaves. The research method used was factorial Completely Randomized Design (CRD), with the first factor being the type of starter culture and the second factor the fermentation time (0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 12, and 16h). The starter culture included Lactobacillus bulgaricus (Lb), Streptococcus thermophilus (St), and Lactobacillus bulgaricus - Streptococcus thermophilus (St-Lb). Data analysis used Duncan Multiple Range Test with a significance level of 5%. The results showed that after 16h of fermentation, the total acid-producing bacteria was at 7.47 log CFU/ml. This value met the standard criteria for probiotics products. Antioxidant activity with the highest percentage of inhibition (97.11%) was found in yogurt with a starter type of St-Lb. This product had 7.21 log CFU/ml of total acid-producing bacteria, total phenol content (TPC) of 143.61 mg GAE/ 100 ml, total flavonoids of 281.22 mg QE/g, a total sugar content of 25.76%, and protein content of 13.38%. Tropical almond yoghurt, with the addition of celery leaves, has the potential to be developed as a functional food. Further research need to investigate the functional properties of the yoghurt.

Cercospora apii is an important seedborne pathogenic fungus causing severe Cercospora leaf spot of celery worldwide. Here, we first present a complete genome assembly of C. apii QCYBC from celery, based on Illumina paired-end and PacBio long-read sequencing data. The high-quality genome assembly contains 34 scaffolds with a 34.81 Mb genome size, 330 interspersed repeat genes, 114 noncoding RNAs, and 12,631 protein-coding genes. The benchmarking universal single-copy ortholog (BUSCO) analysis indicated that 98.2% of the BUSCOs were complete, whereas 0.3, 0.7, and 1.1% were duplicated, fragmented, and missing, respectively. Based on annotation, 508 carbohydrate-active enzymes, 243 cytochromes P450 enzymes, 1,639 translocators, 1,358 transmembrane proteins, and 1,146 virulence genes were identified. The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of various drying methods: freeze drying, vacuum drying, convection drying, and convection-microwave drying at microwave powers of 50 W and 100 W, along with process temperatures (40 °C, 60 °C, and 80 °C), on the drying kinetics, selected physicochemical properties of dried celery stems, and their grindability. The Page model was employed to mathematically describe the drying kinetics across the entire measurement range. Convection-microwave drying significantly reduced the drying time compared to the other methods. The longest drying duration was observed with freeze drying at 40 °C. The product obtained through freeze drying at 40 °C exhibited the least alteration in color coordinates, the highest antioxidant capacity, and the greatest retention of chlorophylls and total carotenoids. At a specific temperature, the quality of the product obtained from vacuum drying was slightly lower compared to that from freeze drying. The most substantial changes in the physicochemical properties of the dried product were observed with convection-microwave drying at a microwave power of 100 W. The drying method selected had a significant impact on the energy consumption of grinding, average particle size, and the grinding energy index of the dried celery stems; these parameters worsened as the drying temperature increased. The product with the best quality characteristics and disintegration parameters was achieved using freeze drying at 40 °C.

Smoke-water (SW) and Karrikinolide1 (KAR1) release dormancy and improve seed germination in many plant species. Therefore, we tested SW (1:2500 v/v) and KAR1 (10−7 M) to break the morphological dormancy of celery cultivar (Apium graveolens L.). In the first trial, seeds were subjected to a 21-day incubation period at 20 °C with SW and KAR1 applied as single treatments. KAR1 showed significantly improved germination (30.7%) as compared to SW (17.2%) and a water control (14.7%). In seed soaking experiments, SW, KAR1, and gibberellic acid (GA3) treatments showed higher germination percentages than the water control after 3 and 6 h of soaking. However, prolonged soaking (12 h) reduced germination percentages for all treatments, indicating a detrimental effect. Analysis of KAR1 content dynamics in 7-day- and 21-day-old celery seeds indicated its prolonged effects on germination and dormancy alleviation. Phytohormones, including auxins in 7-day-old and cytokinins in 7-day- and 21-day-old celery seedlings, along with their precursors and metabolites, were analyzed using ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS) after treatment with KAR1 and SW. The analysis of auxin levels in 7-day-old seeds revealed a negative correlation between seed germination and auxin (indole-3-acetic acid, IAA) content. Notably, it was found that KAR1-treated seeds significantly reduced IAA levels in all treatments. SW and KAR1 did not significantly affect cytokinin levels during celery germination except for N6-Isopentenyladenine. Hence, further research is needed to understand their precise role in celery seed germination. This work will improve our understanding of the role of bioactive compounds from plant-derived smoke and how they regulate hormonal responses and improve germination efficiency in celery.
