Objective: This study investigated the repeatability of feed efficiency and its association with carcass traits in Hanwoo steers during the entire growing and fattening periods. Methods: The growth and intake of thirty-six Hanwoo steers (259±19.7 kg; nine months) were monitored throughout five periods, including two growing periods (GP) and three fattening periods (FP). The steers were fed two types of concentrate mixes with varying nutrient compositions until they reached a target weight of 800 kg for slaughter. For each period, steers were categorized into three classes based on their feed efficiency rankings using residual feed intake (RFI) and feed conversion ratio (FCR). Feed efficiency repeatability was assessed using the Spearman correlation coefficient, decomposition of random errors, and the Theil segregation index (TSI). The Pearson correlation coefficient was used to examine the relationship between feed efficiency and carcass traits. Results: The results demonstrated a significant and high correlation with RFI, but not FCR, during the growing or fattening stages (r>0.5; p<0.01). When steers were classified according to their feed efficiency rankings, 58% of the animals in the high RFI class (low efficient) initially (GP 1) remained in the same class by the last period (FP 3), whereas steers were randomly distributed based on FCR. The repeatability, assessed by the decomposition of random errors, was higher for RFI (0.61) than for FCR (0.15). The TSI also indicated that RFI rankings, rather than FCR rankings, are more likely to be maintained. Moreover, a weak association was observed between feed efficiency and carcass traits. Conclusion: In conclusion, RFI repeatability throughout the GP and FP surpassed that of the FCR, with steers classified as high RFI during the GP more likely to remain in the same class during the FP. Simple Summary: Pigeons are one of the oldest domesticated birds in the world, and humans have been raising pigeons for thousands of years. Pigeon meat is edible and rich in protein, polyunsaturated fatty acids, minerals, and vitamins. As a late-maturing bird, pigeons need to be fed by their parents to obtain nutrients. Therefore, the dietary nutritional level of pigeon breeders is vital for production and reproduction. However, there is currently no explicit nutritional requirement for pigeon riboflavin internationally. This study aimed to investigate the effects of dietary riboflavin levels on the reproductive performance of pigeon breeders and the growth performance and carcass traits of offspring squabs to estimate the riboflavin requirement of pigeon breeders. The natural riboflavin content in the basic diet of corn–peas–soybean–wheat–sorghum–corn gluten is 1.20 mg/kg. Different doses of riboflavin (0, 2.5, 5, 10, and 15 mg/kg) were supplemented with the basal diet to produce five dietary treatments with total riboflavin levels of 1.20, 3.70, 6.20, 10.20, and 16.20 mg/kg. A total of 120 pairs of White King pigeons, aged 60 wks, were randomly allocated into five treatment groups, each consisting of 24 pairs. Each pair was individually raised for 8 wks. After the experiment, an assessment was conducted to evaluate the reproductive performance of the pigeon breeders, as well as the growth and carcass traits of offspring squabs at 28 days of age. The results showed that the dietary riboflavin levels had no significant effect on body weight, feed intake, egg weight, egg production, and egg fertility (p > 0.05). However, pigeons fed a diet without riboflavin had the lowest egg hatchability, egg yolk color, carcass trait, and riboflavin status, while exhibiting higher liver weight and liver index (p < 0.05). Moreover, the indices above showed increased or decreased linearly as the level of riboflavin was increased in the diet. Based on the broken-line regression model, pigeon breeders were determined to require a dietary riboflavin content of 11.4, 13.6, 13.4, 6.60, 4.28, 4.47, 4.67, 6.69, and 6.82 mg/kg to optimize hatchability, eviscerated weight, half-eviscerated weight, breast muscle weight, breast muscle percentage, liver weight, liver index, egg yolk riboflavin, and squab plasma riboflavin, respectively. Simple Summary: This study investigates how different housing systems affect daily step counts and their impact on body conformation, carcass traits, meat quality, and serum biochemical parameters of Jiuyuan Black chickens. Chickens were monitored from 60 to 150 days old, with step counts recorded using pedometers. The study showed that free-range chickens with high step counts had significantly higher daily and total steps compared to other groups, as well as higher heart weight, lower abdominal fat, and better meat quality, but lower intramuscular fat. The CK and LDH levels in chickens exhibited an almost consistent upward trend as exercise levels increased. Overall, free-range chickens with more exercise volume improved heart weight and reduced fat but negatively impacted some body measurements and meat quality. These findings help in choosing housing systems for Chinese indigenous chickens. This study aims to investigate the dynamic changes in daily step counts under different housing systems and further explore the effects of housing system on the body conformation, carcass traits, meat quality, and serum biochemical parameters of a Chinese indigenous chicken breed. At 60 d of age, 300 Jiuyuan Black male chickens with similar body weights in each housing system were further raised until the age of 150 d. At 90, 120, and 150 d of age, in both cage-reared and free-range systems, the top 20 chickens with the highest step counts measured using pedometers and the bottom 20 chickens with the lowest step counts were designated as the cage high-steps group (CHS), the cage low-steps group (CLS), the free-range high-steps group (FHS), and the free-range low-steps group (FLS), respectively. The results show that, at any age stage, the average daily steps (ADS) and total steps (TS) of the FHS group are significantly higher than the other three groups (p < 0.05). The TS of almost all groups showed an overall downward trend as the age increased. Increased exercise volume results in reduced shank length (90 d), breast width (90 d), and keel length (150 d) (p < 0.05). Only birds at 90 d of age from the FHS and FLS groups exhibited lower live body weight, carcass weight, half-eviscerated weight, eviscerated weight, breast muscle weight, leg muscle weight, and percentage of eviscerated weight than the CLS group (p < 0.05). Birds from the FHS group showed the highest heart weight values but the lowest abdominal fat weight values among these four groups (p < 0.05). Both the breast and leg muscle samples from the FHS group displayed higher dry matter and shear force than those from the CHS and CLS groups (p < 0.05). The FHS group displayed the lowest intramuscular fat among the four groups (p < 0.05). The creatine kinase (CK) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) levels in chickens of all age stages were almost observed to rise with increased physical activity. In conclusion, free-range chickens with more exercise volume exhibited an elevated heart weight and reduced abdominal fat but showed negative effects on some body measurements and carcass traits. ABSTRACTThe influence of breed type (purebred vs. crossbred), sex (short-scrotum ram vs. ewe lamb), and supplementation (pasture-only vs. pasture plus 2% soy hull) on carcass and meat quality of landrace hair (Barbados Blackbelly; BB and St. Croix; SX) and wool (Dorset; DO) × hair sheep lambs was evaluated. Forty-eight, mixed sex 5-mo old purebred hair (body weight (BW) = 17.9 ± 1.95 kg) and crossbred (wool × hair) sheep lambs (BW = 21.7 ± 2.56 kg) rationally grazed predominantly tall fescue pasture during summer with or without soy hull supplementation at 2% of BW. At the end of a 90-d grazing trial, lambs were harvested using the USDA standard procedures and their carcasses were evaluated. After 24 h chilling storge (2°C), longissimus muscle (LM) pH was measured, and carcasses were fabricated into primal cuts. Loin chops and fat depots were collected to analyse meat quality parameters. Supplementation rather than crossbreeding had more significant effect on carcass quality under the conditions of this experiment. Regardless of breed type, soy hull supplementation improved colour, lipid oxidation stability and texture properties of fresh lamb, whereas pasture-only lambs had healthier fatty acid profiles compared with those from supplemented lambs.

The present experiment was conducted to evaluate the nutritional value of red Alternanthera sessilis for fattening lambs when they were replaced with alfalfa forage. Forty growing lambs with an average weight of 21.12 kg and an age of 5 months were randomly assigned to four experimental treatments. Growth performance, nutrient digestibility, rumen fermentation parameters, protozoa population, blood parameters, and composition of carcass components were evaluated. The results of this experiment showed that the use of Alternanthera sessilis in the diet significantly reduced feed intake, increased the average daily weight gain, and improved the feed conversion ratio compared to the control treatment (P < 0.05). The digestibility of dry matter and protein was significantly increased (P < 0.05), while the digestibility of neutral detergent fiber, acid detergent fiber, and organic matter showed a numerical increase. Diets containing different levels of the Alternanthera sessilis plant did not affect pH, but the increase in the amount of this plant in the diet led to an increase ammonia nitrogen concentration and rumen protozoa population (P < 0.05). The addition of Alternanthera sessilis to the diet significantly reduced the concentration of blood glucose and cholesterol and increased the concentration of blood urea nitrogen (P < 0.05). Except for the weight of the thigh and neck, the effect of experimental treatments on other carcass components was not significant. Overall, the results of this experiment showed that using the Alternanthera sessilis plant in the rations of fattened lambs as a substitute for alfalfa forage not only had no negative effect on the studied parameters but also improved them in some cases. We developed a study to determine the ideal level of inclusion of soybean oil (SBOil) in the diet without affecting the quantitative and qualitative parameters of the carcass and meat of lambs in a feedlot system; therefore, determining the ideal level of inclusion. Forty male lambs (Santa Inês breed) were used. The initial body weight and age averaged 34.88 ± 3.19 kg and 5 months, respectively. Experimental units (lambs) were randomly distributed in 5 different diets: inclusion levels of SBOil: 0, 30, 60, 90, and 120 g/kg of dry matter (DM). The SOil inclusion reduced the DM intake (P < 0.001), Total digestible nutrients (P = 0.004), and crude protein (P < 0.001). Total weight gain (P < 0.001) decreased with the SBOil inclusion and subcutaneous fat thickness (P = 0.017) showed the same behaviour. The final body weight decreased by 42.9 g/kgDM until the inclusion level of 30 g/kgDM; from this level it was reduced by 145 g/kgDM. The hot and cold carcass weights (P = 0.013) decreased by 36.6 g/kgDM after including 30 g/kgDM of SBOil. Meat physicochemical composition was not altered (P > 0.05). Lower meat tenderness values ​​were obtained at the levels of 60 and 90 g/kgDM. The inclusion above 30 g/kgDM decreased meat tenderness. It is concluded that soybean oil should be included up to 30 g/kgDM in diets. It is important to note that with diets with 60% concentrate, SBOil levels greater than 30 g/kgDM promote yield losses. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of supplementing different protease enzymes on growth performance, intestinal morphology, and selected carcass traits in broilers fed diets reduced 3.5% in crude protein (CP) and amino acids (AA). One thousand one-day-old Ross 308 broilers (41 g) were assigned to five dietary treatments with ten replicates of 20 birds each: a positive control (PC) diet formulated to meet Ross 308 AA requirements, a negative control (NC) diet reformulated to provide 3.5% lower CP and AA compared to PC, NC supplemented with a multi-protease (PR1) solution, containing 3 different coated proteases produced from Aspergillus niger, Bacillus subtilis and Bacillus licheniformis, NC supplemented with a serine protease (PR2) produced from Bacillus licheniformis, and NC supplemented with an alkaline protease (PR3) produced from Bacillus licheniformis. At slaughter, 40 birds per treatment were used to assess the effect of the different treatments on carcass traits. At 32 days, samples of the duodenum, jejunum, and ileum of 10 birds per treatment were collected for intestinal morphology evaluation. Birds fed PC and NC supplemented with multi-protease exhibited better (p < 0.05) feed efficiency compared to NC and NC supplemented with all the other protease enzymes. Multi-protease supplementation was linked to the highest (p < 0.05) carcass weight and yield. There were significant differences (p < 0.05) between treatments in all gut segments, with PC, PR1, PR2, and PR3 exhibiting longer villi height (VH) compared to NC. This study demonstrates that 3.5% reduction of CP and AA negatively affected for the overall period feed efficiency, carcass yield, and intestinal morphology. The supplementation of the multi-protease restored feed efficiency and improved carcass yield.

The study assessed the relationship between rib fat thickness and carcass price among different carcass weight groups in Korean native cattle (Hanwoo), taking into account changes in the beef grading system. Data from 8 926 Hanwoo steers, with an average age of 30.6 ± 1.88 months and slaughtered between 2017 and 2019, were analysed. The variables considered included rib fat thickness, carcass weight, eye muscle area, marbling score, and carcass price. Steers were categorised into eight carcass weight groups ranging from 250 kg to 650 kg in the original system, rib fat thickness consistently had a negative impact on carcass price, with partial coefficients of rib fat thickness on carcass price ranging from -1.96 to -46.5 depending on the carcass weight groups. Conversely, in the revised system, the impact of rib fat thickness varied from negative to positive, turning positive at the 450 kg carcass weight group. Dietary inclusion of Spirulina notably increased intestinal content viscosity (p < 0.010), which was mitigated by the SPM diet. Spirulina supplementation led to lower pH levels in breast meat 24 h post-mortem and heightened the b* colour value in both breast and thigh meats (p < 0.010). Furthermore, Spirulina contributed to an increased accumulation of total carotenoids, n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), and saturated fatty acids (SFA), while diminishing n-6 PUFA, thus altering the n-6/n-3 and PUFA/SFA ratios favourably (p < 0.001). However, it also reduced zinc concentration in breast meat (p < 0.001). Conclusions: The findings indicate that high Spirulina levels in broiler diets impair growth due to increased intestinal viscosity, and that extrusion pre-treatment mitigates this effect. Despite reducing digesta viscosity, a super-dosing enzyme mix did not improve growth. Data also indicates that Spirulina enriches meat with antioxidants and n-3 PUFA but reduces α-tocopherol and increases saturated fats. SUMMARY: This study investigated the effects of sunflower meal (SFM) inclusion at 15% in turkey diets containing an enzyme cocktail on growth performance, organ weights, nutrient digestibility, and carcass traits in turkey toms. A total of 180 one-day-old turkey toms were divided into 20 pens in a randomized complete block design and fed a corn-soybean meal-based basal diet (CON diet) containing phytase, protease, and nonstarch polysaccharide degrading enzymes (NSPase; xylanase, glucanase, cellulase, invertase, protease, and amylase) or where 15% SFM was added at the expense of corn and soybean meal (SFM diet). The diets were formulated to meet the nutrient recommendations for the turkey breed and fed to the turkeys in 7 feeding phases until market. Feeding the SFM diet increased (P < 0.05) body weight (BW) at the end of week 4 and BW gain for 0 to 4 wk. Feed conversion ratio for 0 to 4 wk was also decreased (P = 0.085). The SFM diet had similar (P > 0.10) apparent ileal digestibility of dry matter and amino acids and apparent total tract digestibility of dry matter and crude protein compared to CON diet. Dietary treatments did not influence (P > 0.10) hot carcass yield, cold carcass yield, and yield of breasts, thighs, drumsticks, and wings compared to those of turkeys fed the CON diets. In conclusion, SFM can be included at 15% in corn-soybean meal-based diet supplemented with additional soybean oil and an enzyme blend, including phytase, protease, and NSPase, for turkey toms with minimal impact on the overall feed conversion ratio and carcass yield of turkey toms.

ABSTRACT: Dietary supplementation with plant-based products may arise as part of an alternative strategy to using antibiotics as growth promoters in the poultry industry. Garlic powder (GP) possesses antimicrobial and antioxidant properties. The aim was to investigate the effect of dietary supplementation of GP on growth performance, carcass traits and meat quality of the Japanese quail. A total of 240, day-old mixed gender Japanese quail were assigned to 4 treatment groups, each group being replicated 4 times and containing 15 birds in each replication. Birds were provided with either a basal diet (control) or basal diet supplemented with 0.5%, 1% and 2% GP for 5 wk. At slaughter age, birds fed 1% GP had higher (P < 0.05) live weight and body weight gain when compared to the control. Supplementation with different levels of GP had no influence (P > 0.05) on feed intake, feed conversion ratio except 3rd wk, carcass traits and abdominal fat. Thiobarbituric acid, peroxide and pH values in breast meat of birds receiving GP (1% or 2%) after storage (0, 1, 3, 5, and 7 d) were lower (P < 0.05) than the birds in control. Furthermore, total psychrophilic bacteria count was lower in breast meat of birds supplemented with GP at any dose compared to the birds of control. Sensory characteristics such as color, aroma, juiciness and tenderness were observed significantly better (P < 0.05) in GP supplemented groups especially when fed 1% GP. In conclusion, supplementing the diet with 1% to 2% GP demonstrated growth-promoting effects and positively impacted meat quality, including sensory characteristics.

ABSTRACT: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of the dietary inclusion of microencapsulated sodium butyrate (Na-butyrate; 0, 150, and 300 mg Na-butyrate/kg diet) and dietary fat reduction (7.7% vs. 6.7% in the grower diet; 8.9% vs. 7.7% in the finisher diet) in 792 (half male and half female) broiler chickens on growth performance, carcass traits, and meat quality and the occurrence of wooden breast (WB), white striping (WS), and spaghetti meat (SM). Dietary supplementation with Na-butyrate did not affect the growth performance, carcass traits, meat quality traits, or myopathy rates. Dietary fat reduction did not influence feed intake (FI) but decreased average daily gain (ADG); increased feed conversion ratio (FCR) (P < 0.001); and decreased the occurrence of WS (–38%; P < 0.01), WB (–48%; P < 0.05), and SM (–90%; P < 0.01). Dietary fat reduction also increased cold carcass weight (P < 0.01), carcass yield (P < 0.05), and pectoralis major yield (P < 0.05), whereas meat quality was not affected. Compared to females, males had high body weight, ADG, and FI and low FCR (P < 0.001) at the end of the trial. Moreover, cold carcass weight and hind leg yield were higher in males than in females (P < 0.001), whereas females had higher carcass, breast, and p. major yields (P < 0.001). Males showed a higher rate of WB (P < 0.001) and a lower rate of SM (P < 0.01) than females, whereas WS occurrence did not differ between sexes. In conclusion, Na-butyrate supplementation did not affect growth performance, carcass traits, or meat quality. Conversely, the reduction in dietary fat greatly decreased myopathy occurrence, whereas moderately impaired growth performance.

ABSTRACT: This study investigated the effects of free-range (FR) and cage-rearing (CR) systems on intestinal health, carcass traits, and microbial diversity in the Danzhou chicken breed. Two groups of 125 hens in each group, aged 42 wk, were reared under FR and CR systems. At 50 wk, 50 hens from each group were randomly selected for carcass analysis and 10 hens for intestinal morphology and microbiota profiling. Results indicated a significant increase in villus height (VH) in the duodenum (P < 0.05), jejunum (P < 0.01), and ileum (P < 0.001) of the CR group. Additionally, the ratio of VH to crypt depth (VR) significantly (P < 0.001) increased in the jejunum, while crypt depth (CD) decreased significantly (P < 0.001) in the same section in the CR group. Carcass traits, including dress weight (DW), eviscerated with giblet weight (EGW), eviscerated weight (EW), and leg muscle weight (LW) significantly improved (P < 0.05) in the CR group. Microbial diversity showed significant β-diversity differences, with Lactobacillus, Enterococcus, and Oxalobacteraceae as dominant biomarkers in the CR group. Conversely, Actinomycetaceae, Erysipelotrichaceae, Coriobacteriaceae, Eubacterium, Actinomyces, Scardovia, and Lachnospiraceae were dominant in the FG group. Correlation analysis showed duodenum Lactobacillus was positively correlated with VH (P < 0.05), EW (P < 0.05), and LW (P < 0.001). Jejunum Lactobacillus was positively correlated considerably with VH (P < 0.01), VR (P < 0.05), DW (P < 0.05), EGW (P < 0.01), and LW (P < 0.001). Ileum Lactobacillus was positively correlated with EGW (P < 0.01), EW (P < 0.05), and LW (P < 0.01). Aeriscardovia in duodenum was positively (P < 0.01) associated with EGW. Enterococcus in the duodenum was positively (P < 0.05) associated with EGW and in Jejunum positively correlated with VH (P < 0.05) and VR (P < 0.01). The study concludes that cage rearing improves intestinal health, carcass traits, and microbial diversity in Danzhou chickens, with Lactobacillus and Enterococcus playing key roles.

Simple Summary: This study investigated the impact of terminal sire (Dorset) use and supplementation with agro-byproducts, specifically corn gluten feed and soy hull, on the carcasses and meat quality of landrace hair sheep (Barbados Blackbelly and St. Croix) under rotational grazing. The crossbred lambs had greater carcass weights and more substantial wholesale cuts from the shoulder, rack, loin, and leg than their purebred counterparts. The purebred supplemented lambs showed comparable enhancements in their carcass characteristics to those of the crossbred lambs. Fresh lamb from the purebred animals displayed a more vivid red and yellow hue compared to the crossbred lambs. The meat from the purebred lambs was found to be softer than that from their crossbred counterparts. Supplementation played a more crucial role than crossbreeding in enhancing carcass quality under the conditions of these experiments. The protein content was notably higher in the meat from the crossbred lambs, while the supplemented lambs produced meat with an increased fat content. Pasture-only lambs had elevated levels of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, displaying a healthier fatty acid profile than those receiving supplementary agro-byproducts. However, they benefited from the improved lipid oxidation stability and texture properties of the meat. The supplement type had no effects on the carcass characteristics, but it affected the meat composition. The effects of breed type (purebred or crossbred) and supplementation of agro-byproducts on the growth, carcass characteristics, and meat quality of landrace hair (Barbados Blackbelly; BB and St. Croix; SX) lambs was evaluated. Thirty-six 7.5-month-old purebred hair (BB and SX; body weight = 24.1 ± 4.26 kg) and terminal sire (Dorset; DO) crossbred lambs (DO × BB and DO × SX; body weight = 31.4 ± 3.50 kg) rotationally grazed predominantly on Jesup tall fescue pasture during spring with or without agro-byproduct supplementation (soyhull or corn gluten feed at 2% of BW). Following a 77d grazing period, the lambs were harvested, and their carcass characteristics and meat composition were evaluated. Both supplementation and crossbreeding significantly increased their carcass weight and primal cuts, whereas only supplementation increased (p < 0.01) the dressing percentage, and crossbreeding increased the shear force (p < 0.01). Regardless of breed type, supplementing agro-byproducts improved the lipid oxidation stability and texture properties of the fresh lamb, whereas the pasture-only lambs had healthier fatty acid profiles compared with the supplemented lambs. The results indicate that both terminal sire crossbreeding and byproduct supplementation can be used to affect the carcass characteristics and meat composition of landrace hair sheep lambs. ABSTRACT The selection of an appropriate production system plays a crucial role in ensuring the health, welfare, and productivity of American Pekin ducks. The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of various rearing production systems on the performance of American Pekin Ducks. A total of 180 straight run ducklings (10 days old) were randomly allocated into three experimental groups: intensive production system (IPS), free-range production system (FRPS), and pool with yard production system (PYPS). The distribution was carried out following a completely randomized design. We investigated the morphological parameters, growth performance, serum chemistry, meat cholesterol and triacylglycerol, cellular immunity, intestinal morphology, and carcass traits of Pekin ducks. The results indicate that PYPS birds exhibited significantly better morphometric parameters compared to IPS and FRPS ones. Ducks raised in PYPS had the highest growth rate till the 75th day as compared to those reared in IPS and FRPS. Triacylglycerol, total lipids, blood and meat fat and triacylglycerol were higher in IPS; whereas albumin, AG ratio, total proteins, glucose, and globulin were higher in PYPS. Similarly, cellular immunity (phagocytic activity, eosinophils, basophils, and monocytes) was increased in PYPS. Intestinal morphology and overall carcass traits were better in birds reared under PYPS than in those of IPS and FRPS. American Pekin ducks raised in PYPS showed improved growth, serum chemistry, cellular immunity, and carcass traits. These results suggest that the PYPS could be a promising production system for raising ducks in sub-tropical regions.

This study aims to investigate the dynamic changes in daily step counts under different housing systems and further explore the effects of housing system on the body conformation, carcass traits, meat quality, and serum biochemical parameters of a Chinese indigenous chicken breed. At 60 d of age, 300 Jiuyuan Black male chickens with similar body weights in each housing system were further raised until the age of 150 d. At 90, 120, and 150 d of age, in both cage-reared and free-range systems, the top 20 chickens with the highest step counts measured using pedometers and the bottom 20 chickens with the lowest step counts were designated as the cage high-steps group (CHS), the cage low-steps group (CLS), the free-range high-steps group (FHS), and the free-range low-steps group (FLS), respectively. The results show that, at any age stage, the average daily steps (ADS) and total steps (TS) of the FHS group are significantly higher than the other three groups (p < 0.05). The TS of almost all groups showed an overall downward trend as the age increased. Increased exercise volume results in reduced shank length (90 d), breast width (90 d), and keel length (150 d) (p < 0.05). Only birds at 90 d of age from the FHS and FLS groups exhibited lower live body weight, carcass weight, half-eviscerated weight, eviscerated weight, breast muscle weight, leg muscle weight, and percentage of eviscerated weight than the CLS group (p < 0.05). Birds from the FHS group showed the highest heart weight values but the lowest abdominal fat weight values among these four groups (p < 0.05). Both the breast and leg muscle samples from the FHS group displayed higher dry matter and shear force than those from the CHS and CLS groups (p < 0.05). The FHS group displayed the lowest intramuscular fat among the four groups (p < 0.05). The creatine kinase (CK) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) levels in chickens of all age stages were almost observed to rise with increased physical activity. In conclusion, free-range chickens with more exercise volume exhibited an elevated heart weight and reduced abdominal fat but showed negative effects on some body measurements and carcass traits. These results can provide a theoretical basis for the selection of different housing systems for Chinese indigenous chickens.

This study aimed to investigate the effects of dietary riboflavin levels on the reproductive performance of pigeon breeders and the growth performance and carcass traits of offspring squabs to estimate the riboflavin requirement of pigeon breeders. The natural riboflavin content in the basic diet of corn–peas–soybean–wheat–sorghum–corn gluten is 1.20 mg/kg. Different doses of riboflavin (0, 2.5, 5, 10, and 15 mg/kg) were supplemented with the basal diet to produce five dietary treatments with total riboflavin levels of 1.20, 3.70, 6.20, 10.20, and 16.20 mg/kg. A total of 120 pairs of White King pigeons, aged 60 wks, were randomly allocated into five treatment groups, each consisting of 24 pairs. Each pair was individually raised for 8 wks. After the experiment, an assessment was conducted to evaluate the reproductive performance of the pigeon breeders, as well as the growth and carcass traits of offspring squabs at 28 days of age. The results showed that the dietary riboflavin levels had no significant effect on body weight, feed intake, egg weight, egg production, and egg fertility (p > 0.05). However, pigeons fed a diet without riboflavin had the lowest egg hatchability, egg yolk color, carcass trait, and riboflavin status, while exhibiting higher liver weight and liver index (p < 0.05). Moreover, the indices above showed increased or decreased linearly as the level of riboflavin was increased in the diet. Based on the broken-line regression model, pigeon breeders were determined to require a dietary riboflavin content of 11.4, 13.6, 13.4, 6.60, 4.28, 4.47, 4.67, 6.69, and 6.82 mg/kg to optimize hatchability, eviscerated weight, half-eviscerated weight, breast muscle weight, breast muscle percentage, liver weight, liver index, egg yolk riboflavin, and squab plasma riboflavin, respectively. In conclusion, the optimal supplemental dosage of riboflavin in the diets of pigeon breeders is 13.6 mg/kg.

An experiment was carried out to assess the efficacy of supplemental ascorbic acid (AA) on broiler chicken production performance, blood haematological profile, biochemical profile, and carcass traits under heat stress conditions. A total of 192-day-old broiler chicks were divided into four groups, each with six replicates of eight each (4 × 6 × 8). Four corn-based dietary treatments were formulated: T1 (control diet), T2 (T1 + AA at 200 mg/kg), T3 (T1 + AA at 400 mg/kg), and T4 (T1 + AA at 600 mg/kg) for a period of 42 days. Despite the high temperature and humidity, the 600 mg AA supplemental groups (T4) gained significantly (P ≤ 0.05) more body weight and had a higher feed intake and better feed conversion ratio (FCR) than the control group (T1). After 28 days of feeding the three AA-supplemented diets, antibody titres (humoral immune response) were significantly higher (P ≤ 0.05). The response to intradermally injected phyto-haemagglutinin (PHA-P), an index of the in vivo cell-mediated immune response, was found to be increased (P ≤ 0.05) in the 400 and 600 mg AA-supplemented groups after 35 days. Higher levels of AA (T4) supplementation significantly (P ≤ 0.05) improved haematological values such as haemoglobin (Hb), total erythrocyte count (TEC), total leukocyte count (TLC), and differential leukocyte count (DLC), heterophil:lymphocyte (H:L) in comparison to the control group (T1). The supplemented group improved the serum biochemical profile of the birds, with an increase (P ≤ 0.05) in total serum protein, albumin, and globulin and a decrease in serum cholesterol and corticosterone levels in the T4 group compared to the control group. Heat shock protein-70 (HSP-70) was gradually elevated after increasing the ascorbic acid concentration (P ≤ 0.05) at 14 and 21 days. As a result, it can be concluded that supplementing ascorbic acid at 600 mg/kg is beneficial for improving the performance, immunity, and blood haematological biochemical profile and upregulating the HSP-70 gene of broiler chickens under heat stress conditions. This research was conducted to determine to what extent variable processing methods of soybeans influence broiler rearing by using expeller soybean (EESB), full-fat soybean (FFSB), and solvent soybean meal (SBM) on the characteristics of carcass and flesh quality in Hubbard efficiency plus chicks. A total of 225 chicks (1-day -old) were allocated to five groups: (45 chicks/each). Five dietary treatments were formulated as follows: T1 (basal diet containing SBM 46%, T2 (basal diet+ EESB in the level of 7.5% starter, 15% grower, and 30% finisher), T3 (basal diet+ EESB in the level of 5% starter, 10% grower, and 20% finisher), T4 (basal diet + FFSB in the level of 7.5,% starter, 15% grower, and 30% finisher), and T5 (basal diet + FFSB in the level of 5% starter, 10% grower, and 15% finisher). On day 35, five birds from each group were slaughtered for carcass traits. The result indicated a non-significant difference (p > 0.05) in carcass trait and return from carcass except spleen decreased significantly in T4. According to the fatty acid profile of breast meat, stearic, margaric, and octadecanoic decreased significantly in T2 compared to T3 and T5. In contrast, alpha-linolenic increased in FFSB groups. Regarding the amino acids profile, threonine, isoleucine, and histidine increased significantly in T3. Leucine, alanine, proline, and arginine significantly increased in T5. Muscle fiber diameter increased significantly in FFSB groups. ABSTRACT: Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) are valuable genetic markers that can provide insights into the genetic diversity and variation within chicken populations. In poultry breeding, SNP analysis is widely utilized to accelerate the selection of desirable traits, improving the efficiency and effectiveness of chicken breeding programs. In our previous research, we identified an association between LncEDCH1 and muscle development. To further investigate its specific mechanism, we conducted SNP detection and performed genotyping, linkage disequilibrium, and haplotype analysis. Our research findings indicate that 16 SNPs in the LncEDCH1. Among these SNPs, g.1703497 C>T and g.1704262 C>T were significantly associated with breast muscle weight percentage, g.1703497 C>T and g.1703613 T>C were significantly associated with leg weight percentage, and g.1703497 C>T, g.1703589 T>C, g.1703613 T>C, g.1703636 C>A, g.1703768 T>C, g.1704079 C>T, g.1704250 T>C, g.1704253 G>A were significantly associated with skin yellowness. Two haplotype blocks composed of 6 SNPs that were significantly associated with wing skin yellowness, breast skin yellowness, full-bore weight, and carcass weight percentage. Furthermore, through dual-luciferase reporter assays, biotin-coupled miRNA pull-down assays, 5-ethynyl-2′-deoxyuridine (EDU) assays, immunofluorescence, and quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR), it has been confirmed that miR-196-2-3p inhibits the expression of LncEDCH1 directly by binding to LncEDCH1 g.1703613T>C, thereby achieving indirect regulation of muscle development. These findings provide valuable molecular markers for chicken molecular breeding and broaden our understanding of the regulatory mechanisms.

SUMMARY: Poultry feed could represent 70% of the total production costs and with the constant increase in feedstuffs prices; there is a big interest in reducing the cost of feed globally. The use of multi-carbohydrase enzymes (MCE) to increase the nutritional value of ingredients by reducing the harmful effects of nonstarch polysaccharides could represent significant cost savings for the poultry industry. Thus, the present study was conducted to evaluate the effect of supplementing MCE to corn–soybean meal-based diets. The study consisted of a complete randomized block design of 5 treatments, positive control (PC), negative control (NC; −125 kcal/kg ME compared with the PC), and the NC + MCE at 75 (MCE75), 100 (MCE100), and 125 (MCE125) ppm. The basal diets were supplemented with a 6-phytase at 1,000 FTU/kg. The feeding program consisted of 3 dietary phases (starter 0–14 d; grower 14–28 d; finisher 28–42 d). Cumulatively after 42 d, the NC diet decreased (P = 0.003) the BW of the chickens when compared to PC and MCE125. The NC group resulted in increased (P < 0.001) FCR compared to all other treatments. When the FCR was adjusted to a common weight (2.94 kg), the MCE-treated groups were not different (P > 0.05) from the PC. Breast yield increased linearly (P = 0.008) with increasing dietary inclusion levels of MCE. The NC group tended (P = 0.059) to increase digesta viscosity compared to PC and MCE125. The supplementation of MCE to energy-reduced broiler diets maintained growth performance and showed positive effects to improve breast yield.

ABSTRACT: Growth performance and carcass traits may be retarded by low nutrient density diets. Organic chromium propionate (CrProp) can improve growth, carcass traits, and meat quality in farmed lambs, white broilers, and fish. Limited data regarding CrProp's impacts on yellow-feathered broilers are available. Eight hundred yellow-feathered male broilers (1-day old) were randomly allocated to 4 dietary groups and reared for 56 d. The trial was a 2 (dietary nutrient density) ×2 (CrProp) factorial arrangement with 4 diets: regular nutrient diet and low nutrient density (LND, reduction in metabolizable energy by 81 kcal and crude protein by 0.43%) diet supplemented with or without 200 mg/kg CrProp. Broilers were euthanized at d 56 after blood collection. The results indicated that the LND diet led to greater average daily feed intake (ADFI) from d 1 to 42 and feed conversion ratio (FCR) from d 22 to 42 (P < 0.05). Supplementation of CrProp improved body weight (BW) from d 1 to 56, average daily gain (ADG), and FCR during d 1 to 42 but reduced ADFI during d 1 to 21, as well as lowered abdominal fat percentage (P < 0.05). Supplementation with CrProp to regular and LND diets reduced ADFI but improved FCR from d 1 to 21 (P < 0.05). The LND diet lowered total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC) concentration and total superoxide dismutase (T-SOD) activity in the jejunal mucosa. CrProp elevated T-AOC levels and glutathione peroxidase activity (GSH-Px, P < 0.05). Dietary CrProp upregulated (P < 0.05) the expression of fatty acid transporter (FABP1) gene and peptide transporter (Pept1) gene. CrProp administration increased jejunal FABP1 expression and lowered cooking loss of breast meat (P < 0.05) in the LND group while reducing shear force (P = 0.009) of broilers treated by regular diet. In summary, CrProp administration to the LND diet can improve growth performance in the starter period and meat quality on d 56, possibly through upregulated nutrient transporter gene expression in the jejunum and enhanced antioxidant capability.

This study aimed to investigate the association between hepatic VNN1 expression and carcass traits in Mahuang chickens as well as to identify polymorphisms in the upstream and downstream regions of VNN1 that could potentially be associated with these carcass traits. The study revealed that VNN1 expression levels in liver correlated with various carcass traits such as dressed weight, eviscerated weight, and abdominal fat weight. A total of 39 polymorphic sites were identified, among which 23 were found to be associated with 15 different carcass traits. These polymorphic sites were organized into three distinct haplotype blocks, with BLOCK2 and BLOCK3 being associated with various eviscerated weight percentages, thigh weight, breast muscle weight, wing weight, and other traits. The study underscores the significant role of VNN1 in influencing the carcass traits of Mahuang chickens and sheds light on the genetic foundations of these traits. The findings provide valuable insights that could inform breeding strategies aimed at optimizing traits relevant to market demands and slaughtering efficiency.

ABSTRACT: The leptin receptor (LEPR) gene is a member of the class I cytokine receptor family, which plays an important role in weight regulation, fat accumulation and neuroendocrine function in animals. This study aimed to explore the association of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of the LEPR gene with growth and carcass traits in meat-type quail by PCR amplification and DNA direct sequencing. In this study, genomic DNA was extracted from blood samples of 36 female Savimalt (SV) quails and 49 female French Giant (FG) quails. Growth traits (measured at 3 or 5 wk) and carcass traits (measured at 5 wk) were used for LEPR gene association analysis. The results showed the existence of 9 SNPs (T81C, G90T, C187A, A191G, A219G, G258A, C286T, G346A, and G373A) of the LEPR gene in the 2 quail strains. The statistical analyses indicated that these SNPs of LEPR gene was significantly associated with shank circumference (SC), shank length (SL), breastbone length (BBL), heart rate (HR), and whole net carcass rate (WNCR) of FG (P < 0.05); chest width (CW), body length (BL), leg muscle rate (LMR), whole net carcass rate (WNCR), and heart rate (HR) of SV (P < 0.05). While haplotypes showed significant effect on SL, BBL, heart weight (HW), WNCR, and HR of FG (P < 0.05). Therefore, the LEPR gene may serve as a molecular genetic marker for improving growth and carcass traits in quails.

ABSTRACT: The purpose of this experiment was to explore the effects of zinc supplementation in breeding pigeons diet on carcass traits, meat quality, antioxidant capacity and mRNA expressions of myogenic regulatory factors of squabs. A total of 120 healthy White King pigeons were randomly assigned to 5 treatments, each involving 8 replicates. The experiment lasted for 46 d (18-d incubation period of eggs and 28-d growth period of squabs). The 5 groups were 0, 30, 60, 90, and 120 mg/kg zinc addition. Results showed that the 28-d body weight, breast muscle yield, zinc content in crop milk and myogenic factor 6 (MyF6) abundance of breast muscle were linearly increased (P < 0.050), but the abdominal fat yield linearly decreased (P = 0.040) with increasing dietary zinc supplementation. Both the linear (P < 0.050) and quadratic responses (P < 0.001) were observed in copper zinc superoxide dismutase (Cu-Zn SOD), total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC) and malondialdehyde (MDA) contents in liver and breast muscle. The 28-d body weight was increased by 90 mg/kg zinc supplementation (P < 0.05), and there is no significant difference between 90 and 120 mg/kg zinc addition. The breast muscle yield, Cu-Zn SOD and T-AOC contents in breast muscle and liver, zinc contents in crop milk and breast muscle, MyF6 mRNA expression in breast muscle were higher (P < 0.05) in the group supplemented with 120 mg/kg zinc than the control. The abdominal fat yield was numerically lowest, and MDA contents in breast muscle and liver were significantly lowest in the group fed 120 mg/kg zinc (P < 0.05). However, the meat quality traits were not affected (P > 0.05) by zinc supplementation, except for shear force. It should be stated dietary zinc supplementation at the level of 120 mg/kg for breeding pigeons increased body weight and breast muscle yield of squabs, which may be associated with the up-regulating MyF6 mRNA expression and antioxidant capacity in liver and breast muscle.

Simple Summary: Rabbit meat is considered as a functional food. But, there are few studies directed to determine the influence of natural additives from farm to the table. This study was performed using a fruit obtained from Pithecellobium dulce to follow its effect in rabbits from farm to a fresh meat product. The use of this fruit at 5% of the diet increased the dry and organic matter digestibility of the diet and improved feed conversion rate. Also, it increased acceptance of meatballs prepared with rabbit meat obtained from that animal's feed. Pithecellobium dulce produces a fruit used in alternative medicine that could be utilized to feed rabbits. The objective of this study was to measure the effect of the P. dulce fruit on productive performance, carcass traits, meat characteristics, and meat product quality as well as shelf-life. Seventy-two California × English pot crossbreed rabbits (35 d age) were randomly distributed into two treatments: a control group without P. dulce and another group fed with 5% of P. dulce, and fattening for 28 d. Productive performance parameters, blood biochemistry and hematology, apparent digestibility, carcass traits, meat characteristics, and meat product shelf-life were measured. The results indicate inclusion of 5% P. dulce improves (p < 0.05) dry and organic matter digestibility and feed conversion rate, but some serum blood enzymes were increased (p < 0.05). The a* value, hardness, and pH decreased (p < 0.05) in the group fed with P. dulce. Antioxidant properties in the meatballs were different (p < 0.05), improving shelf-life and acceptance in sensory analysis. In conclusion, the use of 0.5% of P. dulce fruits to feed fattening rabbits can be used to improve the shelf-life of rabbit meat. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Protected sodium butyrate (PSB) is considered an alternative to antibiotics in broiler diets. The present study investigated the effect of PSB supplementation on growth performance, carcass traits, relative weight of internal organs and intestinal morphology in broilers. A total of 1200 one-day-old New Lohman male broilers were randomly allocated to two dietary treatment groups (6 replicates, 100 birds per treatment) and fed a basal diet (CON) or a diet supplemented with 1 g of PSB per kg of diet for 5 weeks of the rearing period. On days 21 and 35, one bird per replicate was randomly selected and slaughtered to determine carcass traits, relative weight of internal organs, and measurements of intestinal histomorphological parameters. The results showed that dietary treatment with PSB increased body weight and average daily gain, but it also led to increased mortality rate (P < 0.05) on day 35 compared to the control group. Furthermore, PSB supplementation increased liver weight, jejunum length and colon length, while decreasing heart weight (P < 0.05) on day 21. In the PSB group, there was a decrease in the number of crypts in the jejunum and an increase in the height of the villi in the ileum (P < 0.05). In conclusion, on day 21, PSB supplementation resulted in an increase in broiler digestive organ parameters, especially liver weight and intestinal morphology. The aim of this study was to investigate the growth performance, water consuming pattern, digestibility, and carcass traits of Lori-Bakhtiari (LORI) and Romanov-Lori-Bakhtiari (CROSSbred) lambs under water restriction conditions. Twenty lambs (10 heads per genotype) with an average weight of 31±2.5 and an age of 8±2 months were used in four treatments with 5 replications in each in a completely randomized design with 2×2 factorial. Water-restricted (WR) lambs had free access to water for only one hour a day. All lambs were slaughtered after six weeks. Feed intake, daily weight gain and final weight were not affected by genotype and access to water, while water intake (p=0.001) and water to feed ratio (p=0.02) were significantly dropped with water restriction. Water-restricted lambs consumed almost 90 percent of their water intake in the first five minutes. Nutrients digestibility was not affected by the treatments, but the amount of fecal dry matter was significantly high in water restricted groups (p=0.03). Carcass weight and yield were not affected by the treatments, but the percentage and weight of tails in the CROSSbred lambs were lower (p≤0.0001), but part of this decrease was compensated by higher fat thickness (p=0.05) and visceral fat (p=0.03). The overall results of this study showed that genotype and water restriction did not significantly affect growth performance, so CROSSbred lambs can be used in water restricted area. The effects of breed type (purebred or crossbred) and supplementation of agro-byproducts on the growth, carcass characteristics, and meat quality of landrace hair (Barbados Blackbelly; BB and St. Croix; SX) lambs was evaluated. Thirty-six 7.5-month-old purebred hair (BB and SX; body weight = 24.1 ± 4.26 kg) and terminal sire (Dorset; DO) crossbred lambs (DO × BB and DO × SX; body weight = 31.4 ± 3.50 kg) rotationally grazed predominantly on Jesup tall fescue pasture during spring with or without agro-byproduct supplementation (soyhull or corn gluten feed at 2% of BW). Following a 77d grazing period, the lambs were harvested, and their carcass characteristics and meat composition were evaluated. Both supplementation and crossbreeding significantly increased their carcass weight and primal cuts, whereas only supplementation increased (p < 0.01) the dressing percentage, and crossbreeding increased the shear force (p < 0.01). Regardless of breed type, supplementing agro-byproducts improved the lipid oxidation stability and texture properties of the fresh lamb, whereas the pasture-only lambs had healthier fatty acid profiles compared with the supplemented lambs. The results indicate that both terminal sire crossbreeding and byproduct supplementation can be used to affect the carcass characteristics and meat composition of landrace hair sheep lambs.

SUMMARY: The effects of dietary supplementation with Saccharomyces cerevisiae, a yeast-cultured probiotic (PB), on Cobb 500 broiler growth, gut health, and immunity were studied. The trial consisted of 288-day-old straight-run chicks divided into 3 treatments with 6 replications each of 16 birds. Other diets, in addition to the control diet (no additives), contained either an antibiotic growth promoter (AGP) at 15 g/100 kg feed or a PB at 20 g/100 kg feed. Blood samples were collected on d 22 and 34 to determine the HI antibody titer against ND and ELISA for IBD. Different growth parameters were recorded and calculated. Dressing yield was calculated upon slaughtering on d 35. Duodenum, ileum, and cecum were subjected to examine the total viable count (TVC), total Escherichia coli count (TEC), and histological observations. Data were analyzed in a completely randomized design. Broiler chicks that received PB and AGP had a significant improvement in body weight, body weight gain, feed efficiency, and carcass yield compared to that of the control. Furthermore, the inclusion of PB in the diet significantly reduced the amount of abdominal fat than other groups. The TVC and TEC of the duodenum, ileum, and cecum were significantly reduced in AGP followed by PB groups. The villus height was significantly higher in PB and AGP. Antibody titer against ND and IBD was significantly increased in PB and AGP groups. In conclusion, feeding S. cerevisiae could be an alternative to AGP to improve growth, meat yield, antibody titer, and gut morphology in commercial broilers.

Improved feed efficiency (FE) is one of the most important achievements in animal breeding programs. The present investigation aimed to determine the phenotypic correlations of residual feed intake (RFI) breeding value with some traits in growing Japanese quail. A total of 48 birds (24 males and 24 females) were selected from 220 quail chicks divided into three classes based on breeding values (BV) for RFI including low (LBV;n= 16), medium (MBV;n= 16), and high-BV (HBV;n= 16) were used to test FE. The effects of three groups of BV on the studied traits including carcass traits, meat quality, humoral immunity, and bone properties were evaluated. The BV for RFI was positively correlated with feed conversion ratio (FCR) and feed intake (FI) but not with metabolic BW (MBW0.75). Live body weight, carcass, breast, and thigh weight in the LBV-RFI group were significantly greater than those in the HBV-RFI group. The BV for RFI had a negative correlation with live body weight and thigh weight. Our findings suggested that the selection of LBV-RFI quails may be useful to increase live body weight without any adverse impact on meat quality and bone properties, and live body weight can be implemented in breeding programs as an indirect selection indicator for improvement of FE in quails. ABSTRACT: Investigations into the association between chicken traits and genetic variations provide helpful breeding information to improve production performance and economic benefits in chickens. The single nucleotide polymorphism technique is an important method in agricultural molecular breeding. In this study, we detected 11 SNPs in the CD36 gene, 2 SNPs (g.-1974 A>G, g.-1888 T>C) located in the 5′ flanking regions, 8 SNPs (g.23496 G>A, g.23643 C>T, g.23931 T>C, g.23937 G>A, g.31256 C>A, g.31258 C>T, g.31335 C>T, g.31534 A>C) located in the intron region, 1 SNPs (g.23743 G>T) located in the exon region and it belongs to synonymous mutation. In SNPs g.23743 G>T, the abdominal fat weight and abdominal fat weight rate of the GG genotype were lower than that of the TT genotype. In SNPs g.23931 T>C, the full-bore weight rate and half-bore weight rate of the TT genotype were higher compared with the CC genotype. And the SNPs g.-1888 T>C, g.23496 G>A, g.23643 C>T, g.31335 C>T and g.31534 A>C were significantly associated with skin yellowness traits, the cloacal skin yellowness before slaughter of the TT genotype was higher than that of the TC and CC genotype in SNPs g.-1888 T>C. Furthermore, 3 haplotypes of the above eleven SNPs were calculated and they correlated with heart weight, stomach weight, wing weight, leg skin yellowness and shin skin yellowness before slaughter. Finally, the CD36 expression profile displayed the expression pattern of CD36 mRNA variation in different tissues.

Our aims were to analyze how this polymorphism influence to carcass traits in crossbred pigs. For our experiment we used biological material from pigs of hybrid combination Large White and Landrace. A total of 106 animals were genotyped using the HinfI restriction enzyme. Three genotypes were identified, 51 being animals HH, 41 Hh and 14 hh. The carcasses of hh pigs had higher carcass percentage of lean meat LM (55.26), MLT area (45.30), (statistically significant higher in comparison hh to HH genotype), half carcass weight (40.84) and back-fat thickness BFT (18.57), as compared with the Hh and HH pigs. We confirmed a statistically significant correlation between carcass traits of genotypes. Statistically most significant were correlations between LM to BFT (-0.8336) and half carcass weight to MLT area (0.5902) in genotype hh. In the other genotypes was a similar trend but with a lower significance. Our results showed the potential of the H-FABP gene in selection programs for carcass traits in pigs.

An experiment was conducted to study the effect of reduced dietary crude protein (CP) diet supplemented with limiting amino acids on growth performance and carcass traits of Gramasree male birds up to eight weeks of age. A total of 280 day-old chicks were allotted randomly under five dietary treatments each with four replicates of 14 chicks under completely randomized design. The different dietary treatments viz., control diet (T1) was formulated as per ICAR (2013) nutrient requirements for Indian improved native birds with 21 per cent CP and 2800 kcal/kg Metabolizable energy (ME) using corn, soya bean meal, wheat bran and de-oiled rice bran. Treatment diets T2, T3, T4 and T5 were formulated by reducing CP content to 20, 19, 18, and 17 per cent, respectively with isocaloric value of 2800 kcal/kg ME and supplemented with methionine, lysine, threonine and tryptophan to meet the daily requirements. Weekly body weight and feed consumption were recorded. For the carcass study, two birds from each replicate were randomly selected and slaughtered humanely at eighth week of age. The results showed that the final body weight and cumulative weight gain were comparable among the treatments. The lowest cumulative feed intake and feed conversion ratio (FCR) were observed in 17 per cent CP containing treatment (T5), which was not significantly different from rest of the groups. The mean per cent breast meat yield, giblet yield, dressing yield and ready-to-cook yield were comparable among the five dietary treatments. Cherry Valley ducks (CVDs) and White Kaiya ducks (WKDs) are judged to be fast‐ and slow‐growing lines, respectively. To investigate the carcass traits and nutritional profile at their marketable ages, 12 birds (38 days for CVDs, n = 6; 56 days for WKDs, n = 6) were randomly selected and slaughtered. Indicators such as breast muscle weight, shear force, and proximate composition were comprehensively detected. Although the carcass and breast muscle weight in WKDs were significantly lower, remarkably higher intramuscular fat and tenderness and less moisture content were observed in WKDs. Besides, WKDs contained higher contents of Cu, Zn, and Ca, whereas CVDs contained higher leucine (Leu) and histidine (His) compositions (P < 0.01). Moreover, higher monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs) and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) along with lower saturated fatty acids (SFAs) were detected in WKDs (P < 0.01). Taken together, despite light carcass and breast muscle weight, WKDs had advantages in nutritional compositions except for amino acid constituents, including intramuscular fat, MUFAs, and PUFAs, as well as Cu, Zn, and Ca. The experiment was to study the effect of different forage ratio on growth and development, carcass trait and meat quality of Angus cattle. A total of 64 healthy six-month-old Angus cattle (half bulls and half cows) with similar body weight were randomly divided into four groups with four replicates in each group and four cattle in each replicate. Each group cattle was fed a total mixed diet with different forage proportions. The pre-test lasted for 15 d and the formal test lasted for 360 d. The results showed that the body weight of bull and cow in group 1 was significantly higher than that in group 3 and control group at 12 and 18-month-old (P<0.05), the body weight of bull in group 2 was significantly higher than that in group 3 and control group at 12 and 18-month-old (P<0.05), and that in group 2 was significantly higher than that in group 3 and control group at 18-month-old. Average daily gain of bulls and cows in group 1 was significantly higher than that in control group and group 3 at 7~12-month-old (P<0.05), average daily gain of bulls and cows in group 1 was significantly higher than that in group 3 at 13~18-month-old (P<0.05), average daily gain of bulls and cows in group 1 was significantly higher than that in group 3 at 7~18-month-old (P<0.05). The pre-slaughter weight, carcass weight and slaughter rate of bulls in group 1 were significantly higher than those in control group and group 3 (P<0.05), and the eye muscle area and back fat thickness of bulls in group 1 were significantly higher than those in other groups (P<0.05). Muscle and fat color in group 1 and group 2 were significantly lower than those in control group (P<0.05). Ultrasound scanning (USS) technique has been routinely used in performance testing of meat animals, such as swine and beef cattle. This study is to evaluate USS application in organic lamb production, selection, and the accuracy of carcass traits and market value prediction. Ewes (n = 60) were bred, pregnancy diagnosed at 40 d post-mating, and their suckling lambs were assigned to two groups, a non-creep feeding (control) and creep feeding (treatment) group. Each group was balanced with sexes and litter size when allocated into groups at 30-d of age. All lambs had unrestricted suckled their dams during pasture grazing or grazing with creep feeding supplementation until weaning. There were 28 control and 32 treatment group lambs presented at weaning 90 d of age. Lambs were continued to graze as two groups on fescue-based pasture or grazing with creep feeding supplementation till marketing at 120 d. Weaning body weight (BW), average daily gain (ADG), and post-weaning growth weight were significantly (P < 0.05) greater than control 24.0 kg, 226 g/d, and 28.0 kg for treatment group compared with control group at 21.3 kg, 196 g/d, and 25.3 kg, respectively. However, AGD was not significantly increased during the post-weaning creep supplementary feeding period. The ultrasound scanned carcass traits increase in creep feeding over control lambs at weaning and post-weaning measurements (Figure 1). The average ultrasound scanned back fat depth, loineye muscle depth, muscle width, and loineye muscle area were 2.2 mm, 17.9 mm, 45.6 mm and 5.8 cm² at weaning age of 90 d; and 2.6 mm, 20.9 mm, 48.0 mm, and 7.0 cm² at 120 d, respectively. The correlative associations (Table 1) between carcass traits and lamb BW, such as loineye muscle depth (LED), loineye muscle width (LEW), loineye muscle depth (LED) and loineye muscle area (LEA), and LEA were significantly improved (P < 0.05) with increased BW. However, there was no difference in these traits due to treatment except backfat depth, which was significantly higher for treatment and females. Creep supplementary feeding lambs during pre-weaning has increased ADG and weaning weight; therefore, will enhance market values of organically raised lambs. This study investigated the effects of sunflower meal (SFM) inclusion at 15% in turkey diets containing an enzyme cocktail on growth performance, organ weights, nutrient digestibility, and carcass traits in turkey toms. A total of 180 one-day-old turkey toms were divided into 20 pens in a randomized complete block design and fed a corn-soybean meal-based basal diet (CON diet) containing phytase, protease, and nonstarch polysaccharide degrading enzymes (NSPase ; xylanase, glucanase, cellulase, invertase, protease, and amylase) or where 15% SFM was added at the expense of corn and soybean meal (SFM diet). The diets were formulated to meet the nutrient recommendations for the turkey breed and fed to the turkeys in 7 feeding phases until market. Feeding the SFM diet increased (P < 0.05) body weight (BW) at the end of week 4 and BW gain for 0 to 4 wk. Feed conversion ratio for 0 to 4 wk was also decreased (P = 0.085). The SFM diet had similar (P > 0.10) apparent ileal digestibility of dry matter and amino acids and apparent total tract digestibility of dry matter and crude protein compared to CON diet. Dietary treatments did not influence (P > 0.10) hot carcass yield, cold carcass yield, and yield of breasts, thighs, drumsticks, and wings compared to those of turkeys fed the CON diets. In conclusion, SFM can be included at 15% in corn-soybean meal-based diet supplemented with additional soybean oil and an enzyme blend, including phytase, protease, and NSPase, for turkey toms with minimal impact on the overall feed conversion ratio and carcass yield of turkey toms. Pithecellobium dulce produces a fruit used in alternative medicine that could be utilized to feed rabbits. The objective of this study was to measure the effect of the P. dulce fruit on productive performance, carcass traits, meat characteristics, and meat product quality as well as shelf-life. Seventy-two California × English pot crossbreed rabbits (35 d age) were randomly distributed into two treatments: a control group without P. dulce and another group fed with 5% of P. dulce, and fattening for 28 d. Productive performance parameters, blood biochemistry and hematology, apparent digestibility, carcass traits, meat characteristics, and meat product shelf-life were measured. The results indicate inclusion of 5% P. dulce improves (p < 0.05) dry and organic matter digestibility and feed conversion rate, but some serum blood enzymes were increased (p < 0.05). The a* value, hardness, and pH decreased (p < 0.05) in the group fed with P. dulce. Antioxidant properties in the meatballs were different (p < 0.05), improving shelf-life and acceptance in sensory analysis. In conclusion, the use of 0.5% of P. dulce fruits to feed fattening rabbits can be used to improve the shelf-life of rabbit meat.

ABSTRACT: Carcass traits play important roles in the broiler industry and single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) can be efficient molecular markers for marker-assisted breeding of chicken carcass traits. Based on our previous RNA-seq data (accession number GSE58755), cysteine rich with epidermal growth factor like domains 1 (CRELD1) and DnaJ heat shock protein family member C30 (DNAJC30) are differentially expressed in breast muscle between white recessive rock chicken (WRR) and Xinghua chicken (XH). In this study, we further characterize the potential function and SNP mutation of CRELD1 and DNAJC30 in chicken for the first time. According to protein interaction network and enrichment analysis, CRELD1 and DNAJC30 may play some roles in chicken muscle development and fat deposition. In WRR and XH, the results of the relative tissue expression pattern demonstrated that CRELD1 and DNAJC30 are not only differentially expressed in breast muscle but also leg muscle and abdominal fat. Therefore, we identified 5 SNP sites of CRELD1 and 7 SNP sites of DNAJC30 and genotyped them in an F2 chicken population. There are 4 sites of CRELD1 and 3 sites of DNAJC30 are associated with chicken carcass traits like breast muscle weight, body weight, dressed weight, leg weight percentage, eviscerated weight with giblet percentage, intermuscular adipose width, shank length, and girth. These results suggest that the SNP sites of CRELD1 and DNAJC30 can be potential molecular markers to improve the chicken carcass traits and lay the foundation for marker-assisted selection.

This research aimed to study the impact of supplementation of three multi-enzyme levels (0, 0.1, and 0.2% of feed) and two levels of dietary treatments [standard diet (SD) and low-density diet (LDD)] on growth performance, carcass traits, digestibility, and meat quality of broilers from 1 to 38 days of age. A total of 216 1-day-old Arbor Acres broiler chicks were randomly assigned to a factorial experiment (2 × 3) comprising six dietary treatments, each with six replicates and each replicate with six chickens. The results showed that the LDD significantly reduced body weight gain by 5.0%, compared with the SD. Multi-enzymes significantly improved body weight gain and the production index (PI) relative to the SD. The feed conversion ratio was significantly enhanced with increased multi-enzymes from 1 to 21 days. A significant relation between the multi-enzyme concentration and type of dietary treatment was observed in body weight gain and feed conversion ratio from 1 to 21 days of age. Nitrogen-free extract digestibility was significantly increased by using the SD diet compared with using the LDD. Multi-enzyme supplementation improved the digestibility of dry matter, crude protein, crude fiber, and nitrogen-free extract in the LDD. A significant relationship was found between the multi-enzyme concentration and type of dietary treatment on the pancreas, liver, and intestinal length percentages. The meat dry matter concentration was significantly higher in the LDD group than in the SD group. The low-density diet significantly reduced the total revenue compared with the SD, whereas broilers fed the SD recorded significantly higher total revenue and economic efficiency than those fed the LDD. The low-density diet significantly increased economic efficiency compared with the SD. Multi-enzymes significantly increased the total revenue, net revenue, and economic efficiency than the standard set. In conclusion, using multi-enzymes in broiler diets improved body weight gain. The LDD with multi-enzymes showed enhanced body weight gain compared with the SD without multi-enzymes.

BACKGROUND: Supplementation of sulfur (S) and folic acid (FA) are known to spare the dietary requirement of methionine (Met) in chicken. An experiment was conducted to determine the effects of feeding graded concentrations of FA (0, 2, 4, 6, 8 mg kg−1) and two concentrations of S (0 and 2 g kg−1) in 5 × 2 factorial design. Diet without FA and S was considered as negative control (NC). Another diet with the recommended concentration of Met was considered as the positive control (PC). Each diet was offered ad libitum from day 1 to 42 to 10 pens of 20 male chicks each. RESULTS: Broilers fed the NC diet had lower body weight gain (BWG), high feed conversion ratio, lower ready‐to‐cook yield, higher lipid peroxidation and reduced concentrations of protein and albumin in serum. BWG improved with FA at day 21 and showed a trend of improvement at day 42. Similarly, BWG improved with S supplementation at day 42. The FA and S interaction indicated a significant reduction in lipid peroxidation with S supplementation at the majority of FA levels. Serum protein fractions increased with increased dietary FA content and increased further with S supplementation. CONCLUSION: Based on the results, it is concluded that the combination of FA (4 mg kg−1) and S (2 g kg−1) improved BWG. Similarly, the feed efficiency with 6 mg FA alone or with S was similar to the PC group. Objective: This study investigated the repeatability of feed efficiency and its association with carcass traits in Hanwoo steers during the entire growing and fattening periods., Methods: The growth and intake of thirty-six Hanwoo steers (259±19.7 kg; nine months) were monitored throughout five periods, including two growing periods (GP) and three fattening periods (FP). The steers were fed two types of concentrate mixes with varying nutrient compositions until they reached a target weight of 800 kg for slaughter. For each period, steers were categorized into three classes based on their feed efficiency rankings using residual feed intake (RFI) and feed conversion ratio (FCR). Feed efficiency repeatability was assessed using the Spearman correlation coefficient, decomposition of random errors, and the Theil segregation index (TSI). The Pearson correlation coefficient was used to examine the relationship between feed efficiency and carcass traits., Results: The results demonstrated a significant and high correlation with RFI, but not FCR, during the growing or fattening stages (r>0.5; p<0.01). When steers were classified according to their feed efficiency rankings, 58% of the animals in the high RFI class (low efficient) initially (GP 1) remained in the same class by the last period (FP 3), whereas steers were randomly distributed based on FCR. The repeatability, assessed by the decomposition of random errors, was higher for RFI (0.61) than for FCR (0.15). The TSI also indicated that RFI rankings, rather than FCR rankings, are more likely to be maintained. Moreover, a weak association was observed between feed efficiency and carcass traits., Conclusion: In conclusion, RFI repeatability throughout the GP and FP surpassed that of the FCR, with steers classified as high RFI during the GP more likely to remain in the same class during the FP. Feed efficiency was weakly correlated with carcass traits.

Dietary supplementation with plant-based products may arise as part of an alternative strategy to using antibiotics as growth promoters in the poultry industry. Garlic powder (GP) possesses antimicrobial and antioxidant properties. The aim was to investigate the effect of dietary supplementation of GP on growth performance, carcass traits and meat quality of the Japanese quail. A total of 240, day-old mixed gender Japanese quail were assigned to 4 treatment groups, each group being replicated 4 times and containing 15 birds in each replication. Birds were provided with either a basal diet (control) or basal diet supplemented with 0.5%, 1% and 2% GP for 5 wk. At slaughter age, birds fed 1% GP had higher (P < 0.05) live weight and body weight gain when compared to the control. Supplementation with different levels of GP had no influence (P > 0.05) on feed intake, feed conversion ratio except 3rd wk, carcass traits and abdominal fat. Thiobarbituric acid, peroxide and pH values in breast meat of birds receiving GP (1% or 2%) after storage (0, 1, 3, 5, and 7 d) were lower (P < 0.05) than the birds in control. Furthermore, total psychrophilic bacteria count was lower in breast meat of birds supplemented with GP at any dose compared to the birds of control. Sensory characteristics such as color, aroma, juiciness and tenderness were observed significantly better (P < 0.05) in GP supplemented groups especially when fed 1% GP.
