Carbohydrate (CHO) supplementation during endurance exercise can improve performance. However, it is unclear whether low glycemic index (GI) CHO leads to differential ergogenic and metabolic effects compared with a standard high GI CHO. This study investigated the ergogenic and metabolic effects of CHO supplementation with distinct GIs, namely, (a) trehalose (30 g/hr), (b) isomaltulose (30 g/hr), (c) maltodextrin (60 g/hr), and (d) placebo (water). In this double-blind, crossover, counterbalanced, placebo-controlled study, 13 male cyclists cycled a total of 100 min at varied exercise intensity (i.e., 10-min stages at 1.5, 2.0, and 2.5 W/kg; repeated three times plus two 5-min stages at 1.0 W/kg before and after the protocol), followed by a 20-min time trial on four separated occasions. Blood glucose and lactate (every 20 min), heart rate, and ratings of perceived exertion were collected throughout, and muscle biopsies were taken before and immediately after exercise. The results showed that trehalose improved time-trial performance compared with placebo (total work done 302 ± 39 vs. 287 ± 48 kJ; p =.01), with no other differences between sessions (all p ≥.07). Throughout the 100-min protocol, blood glucose was higher with maltodextrin compared with the other supplements at all time points (all p <.05). Heart rate, ratings of perceived exertion, muscle glycogen content, blood glucose, and lactate were not different between conditions when considering the 20-min time trial (all p >.05). Trehalose supplementation throughout endurance exercise improved cycling performance and appears to be an appropriate CHO source for exercise tasks up to 2 hr. Carbohydrates are synthetically challenging molecules with vital biological roles in all living systems. To better understand the biological functions of this fundamentally important class of molecules, novel methodologies are needed, including site-selective functionalization and glycosylation reactions. Purpose: Traditional fasting causes considerable discomfort without added assurance of security, whereas oral carbohydrate beverage offers an alternative to improve medical experience. This study aims to explore the impact of different types and dosages of oral fluids loading before painless bidirectional endoscopy on the gastric emptying and wellbeing. Methods: 180 patients arranged for bidirectional endoscopy with intravenous anesthesia were randomized: patients in the control group (Group C) obeyed standard fasting; the 200 mL carbohydrate group (Group P1), 400 mL carbohydrate group (Group P2), 200 mL water group (Group W1) and 400 mL water group (Group W2) respectively consumed 200 mL or 400 mL corresponding clear liquids 2 h before the procedure. Gastric emptying metrics under ultrasound, subjective comfort indexes, periprocedural blood glucose and vital signs were contrasted among the groups. Results: No significant differences were detected in the gastric emptying including CSA (cross-sectional area), GV (gastric volume), cGV (corrected gastric volume) and the three-point grading system among groups, and none had a cGV > 1.5 mL/kg before anesthesia. Participants in Group P2 experienced less preprocedural thirst and mouth dryness, so as the postprocedural thirst, mouth dryness and hunger. Periprocedural blood glucose and MAP had the similar trend in all groups. The occurrence of hypotension, bradycardia, hypoxia, and the required norepinephrine was comparable among the groups. Conclusions: Oral beverage loading with 200 mL or 400 mL can be safely applicated 2 h before painless bidirectional endoscopy without increasing the gastric volume. 400 mL carbohydrate solution effectively relieves the discomfort and could serve as a consideration. There are conflicting reports both within the lay media and scientific literature regarding the use and benefit of dietary practices that aim to reduce CHO intake in endurance athletes. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of intentional reduction of CHO intake and fasted training in elite endurance‐based athletes using a semi‐quantitative questionnaire. Bone is a nutritionally modulated tissue; therefore, this study also aimed to explore if these dietary practices are potentially associated with bone injury incidence. The reported reduction of CHO intake was prevalent (28%) with the primary motivation being maintenance or manipulation of body composition. However, discrepancies in athletes' awareness of CHO intake were identified providing a potential avenue of intervention especially within applied practice. The use of fasted training was more prevalent (38%) with athletes using this practice for both body composition manipulation and promoting a desired adaptive response. Forty‐four per cent of participants had suffered a radiographically confirmed bone injury at some point in their career. There was no association between reduction in CHO intake and bone injury incidence; however, the incidence of bone injury was 1.61 times higher in those who currently use fasted training compared to those who have never used it or who have used it in the past. Although a direct causal link between these dietary practices and the incidence of bone injury cannot be drawn, it provides robust justification for future investigations of the potential mechanisms that could explain this finding. Highlights: The self‐reported use of reductions in CHO intake (28%) and fasted training (38%) is prevalent in elite endurance‐based athletes and comparable to previous investigations in this area. Controlling body composition and promoting adaptive responses were common rationales for use.The incidence of bone injury is also high (44%) and there may be some association between bone injury incidence and fasted training. Further controlled experimental studies are required to determine the direct effect of nutritional strategies commonly adopted by endurance athletes on bone metabolism both acutely and chronically.There appears to be a gap in some athlete's knowledge and awareness of CHO rich foods and appropriate consumption of CHO to support endurance training and performance according to current guidelines. Elevated concentrations of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2), a consequence of anthropogenic global change, may profoundly interfere with natural ecological processes, perhaps even interactions across trophic levels. Even the survival prospects of organisms at higher trophic levels could be affected, as follows. We showed previously that the endoparasitoid Diaeretiella rapae, a specialized parasitoid of the cabbage aphid Brevicoryne brassicae, exposed to elevated CO2 concentrations (800 ppm) for up to 10 weeks, performed far worse (e.g., lower survival and parasitism rates) compared with ambient CO2 (400 ppm). To investigate whether these CO2‐related effects in the parasitoids were mediated by changes in the quality of the aphids as hosts, we measured the nutritional and energy content of cabbage aphids under the above conditions. Specifically, we measured lipid, protein and water‐soluble carbohydrate concentrations. We tested the hypothesis that when insects feed from plants with altered nutritional content, they incur a cost in dealing with such biotic stresses. That cost reduces their metabolic well‐being and, thus, reduces their nutritional status with respect to parasitoids developing at their expense. We found that CO2 had significant effects on aphid body mass (i.e., wet weight) and chemical composition, with elevated CO2 concentrations reducing aphid mass by more than 50%. Aphids grown under elevated CO2 also had significantly reduced soluble carbohydrates but significantly more lipids, on a weight‐per‐weight basis, than aphids grown under ambient CO2. A significant decrease in total energy reserves (i.e., the sum of total proteins, lipids, and water‐soluble carbohydrates) thus typified aphids grown under elevated CO2. Our results contribute to explaining the impaired performance of the aphid B. brassicae and its parasitoid D. rapae previously reported under elevated CO2, and provide evidence that under future climate change, host plants might affect the development and performance of parasitoids through their impacts on the nutritional quality of their herbivorous hosts. In recent times, the complexity of food styles and meal content has increased, leading to significant variations in macronutrient composition between meals. This phenomenon has coincided with a rise in obesity rates. We aimed to determine whether a large variation in macronutrient composition between meals results in reduced fat oxidation. A cross-over study was conducted with 13 healthy young men, using whole-body indirect calorimetry to test 24-h energy metabolic responses under three conditions: regular meals (R), high-carbohydrate breakfast (CB), or high-fat breakfast (FB), each with different macronutrient contents. The R condition included three meals daily with the same macronutrient composition. The CB condition included a high-carbohydrate meal at breakfast, high-fat meal at lunch, and high-carbohydrate meal at dinner. The FB condition included a high-fat meal at breakfast, high-carbohydrate meal at lunch, and high-carbohydrate meal at dinner. The daily macronutrient compositions were similar across the three conditions, except that CB and FB had larger variations in carbohydrate–fat balance between meals than R. The participants were tested in random order. During the dietary intervention, we compared 24-h whole-body metabolic parameters, including substrate oxidation (e.g., 24 h respiratory quotient [RQ]). No significant differences were observed in the measures of energy expenditure among the three conditions. However, after adjusting for the sleeping RQ on a preceding day, the estimated 24hRQ was lower under the FB condition (0.845) than under the R (0.854, P = 0.0077 vs. FB) and CB conditions (0.853, P = 0.016 vs. FB). No difference was observed in the magnitude of the 5-h RQ change from lunch to dinner under the CB condition and in the magnitude of change from breakfast to lunch under the FB condition. A large variation in the carbohydrate–fat balance between meals does not decrease daily fat oxidation. An FB may increase daily fat oxidation compared to a CB when the daily food quotient is constant, but this increase may not be owing to the upregulation of fat burning on a daily basis. Proteins are one of the most prevalent components of the extracellular matrix, which are used in bone tissue engineering for construction of scaffolds. Due to their biocompatibility, biodegradability, non-immunogenicity and having cell motifs (cell recognition sites), they are capable of providing cell adhesion and favorable scaffold-cell interactions. However, proteins have crucial disadvantages, including lack of mechanical strength required for bone regeneration, as well as rapid degradation rate, which have restricted their implementation as a sole component in the construction of scaffolds. To overcome such disadvantages and at the same time, benefit from their properties, proteins are combined with other materials, such as carbohydrates and synthetic polymers and glass-ceramides. This review summarizes different types of protein hybrid scaffolds for bone tissue engineering and also discusses the function and significance of proteins in bone regeneration. Converting carbohydrates into 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) is an attractive and promising route for value-added utilization of agricultural and forestry biomass resource. As an important platform compound, 5-HMF possesses high active furan structure with hydroxymethyl and aldehyde group for production of various bio-chemicals and materials, meanwhile, which suffer from low stability and poor yield during the industrial biorefinery process. Hence, selective production of 5-HMF with high-yield and low-cost has attracted extensive attention from scientific and industrial researchers. This review sorted and described the latest advanced research on solvent and catalyst system, as well as energy field effect for production of 5-HMF with different feedstock in detail, emphatically discussing the solvent effect and its synergistic effect with other aspects. Besides, the future prospects and challenges for production of 5-HMF from carbohydrates were also presented, which provide a profound insight into industrial 5-HMF process with economic and environmental feature. Objective: For elective cesarean section patients with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), there is a lack of evidence-based research on the use of enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS). This study aims to compare the ERAS after-surgery protocol and traditional perioperative management. Research design and methods: In this retrospective cohort study, singleton pregnancies with good glucose control GDM, delivered by elective cesarean sections under intravertebral anesthesia at least 37 weeks from January 1 to December 31, 2022, were collected at the Third Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University. We divided all enrolled pregnant women and newborns into an ERAS group and a control group (the traditional perioperative management group) based on their adherence to the ERAS protocol. The primary outcome was the preoperative blood glucose level, with an increase of more than 1 mmol/L indicating clinical significance when compared to the control group. The secondary outcome was centered around an adverse composite outcome that affected both mothers and newborns. Results: We collected a total of 161 cases, with 82 in the ERAS group and 79 in the control group. Although the mean preoperative blood glucose level in the ERAS group was significantly higher than in the control group (5.01 ± 1.06 mmol/L vs. 4.45 ± 0.90 mmol/L, p<0.001), the primary outcome revealed that the mean glycemic difference between the groups was 0.47 mmol/L (95% CI 0.15-0.80 mmol/L), which was below the clinically significant difference of 1 mmol/L. For the secondary outcomes, the ERAS group had an 86% lower risk of a composite adverse outcome compared to the control group. This included a 73% lower risk of perioperative maternal hypoglycemia and a 92% lower rate of neonatal hypoglycemia, all adjusted by age, hypertensive disorder of pregnancy, BMI, gestational weeks, primigravidae, primary pregnancy, GDM, surgery duration, and fasting glucose. Conclusion: Implementing a low-dose carbohydrate ERAS in pregnant women with GDM prior to elective cesarean section, compared to traditional perioperative management, does not lead to clinically significant maternal glucose increases and thus glucose-related maternal or neonatal perioperative complications. The presence and the level of antibodies in human sera against bacterial glycans are indications of prior encounters with similar antigens and/or the bacteria that express them by the immune system. An increasing number of pathogenic bacteria that cause human diseases have been shown to express polysaccharides containing a bacterial nonulosonic acid called 5,7-di-N-acetyllegionaminic acid (Leg5,7Ac2). To investigate the immune recognition of Leg5,7Ac2, which is critical for the fight against bacterial infections, a highly effective chemoenzymatic synthon strategy was applied to construct a library of α2–3/6-linked Leg5,7Ac2-glycans via their diazido-derivatives (Leg5,7diN3-glycans) formed by efficient one-pot three-enzyme (OP3E) synthetic systems from a diazido-derivative of a six-carbon monosaccharide precursor. Glycan microarray studies using this synthetic library of a Leg5,7Ac2-capped collection of diverse underlying glycan carriers and their matched sialoside counterparts revealed specific recognition of Leg5,7Ac2 by human IgG antibodies pooled from thousands of healthy donors (IVIG), suggesting prior human encounters with Leg5,7Ac2-expressing pathogenic bacteria at the population level. These biologically relevant Leg5,7Ac2-glycans and their immune recognition assays are important tools to begin elucidating their biological roles, particularly in the context of infection and host–pathogen interactions. Highlights Female soccer players have been identified as presenting with low energy availability (LEA), though the prevalence of LEA may be overestimated given inaccuracies associated with self‐reporting dietary intakes. Accordingly, we aimed to quantify total daily energy expenditure (TDEE) via the doubly labelled water (DLW) method, energy intake (EI) and energy availability (EA). Adolescent female soccer players (n = 45; 16 ± 1 years) completed a 9–10 day ‘training camp’ representing their national team. Absolute and relative TDEE was 2683 ± 324 and 60 ± 7 kcal kg−1 fat free mass (FFM), respectively. Mean daily EI was lower (P < 0.01) when players self‐reported using the remote food photography method (RFPM) (2047 ± 383 kcal day−1) over a 3‐day period versus DLW derived EI estimates accounting for body mass (BM) changes (2545 ± 518 kcal day−1) over 7–8 days, representing a mean daily Δ of 499 ± 526 kcal day−1 and 22% error when using the RFPM. Estimated EA was different (P < 0.01) between methods (DLW: 48 ± 14 kcal kg−1 FFM, range: 22–82; RFPM: 37 ± 8 kcal kg−1 FFM, range: 22–54), such that prevalence of LEA (<30 kcal kg−1 FFM) was lower in DLW compared with RFPM (5% vs. 15%, respectively). Data demonstrate the potential to significantly underestimate EI when using self‐report methods. This approach can therefore cause a misrepresentation and an over‐prevalence of LEA, which is the underlying aetiology of ‘relative energy deficiency in sport’ (REDs). The rapid increase in the production of powdered milk–tea blends is driven by a growing awareness of the presence of highly nutritious bioactive compounds and consumer demand for convenient beverages. However, the lack of literature on the impact of heat-induced component interactions during processing hinders the production of high-quality milk–tea powders. The production process of milk–tea powder blends includes the key steps of pasteurization, evaporation, and spray drying. Controlling heat-induced interactions, such as protein–protein, protein–carbohydrate, protein–polyphenol, carbohydrate–polyphenol, and carbohydrate–polyphenol, during pasteurization, concentration, and evaporation is essential for producing a high-quality milk–tea powder with favorable physical, structural, rheological, sensory, and nutritional qualities. Adjusting production parameters, such as the type and the composition of ingredients, processing methods, and processing conditions, is a great way to modify these interactions between components in the formulation, and thereby, provide improved properties and storage stability for the final product. Therefore, this review comprehensively discusses how molecular-level interactions among proteins, carbohydrates, and polyphenols are affected by various unit operations during the production of milk–tea powders. The prevalence of obesity globally has tripled over the last half century, and currently affects around 650 million adults and 340 million children and adolescents (ages 5–19 years). Obesity contributes towards >50 co-morbidities and premature mortality. Obesity is a highly stigmatised condition that is associated with much mental and emotional distress and dysfunction. Thus, obesity is a major contributor to healthcare expenditure globally. Traditionally, the management of obesity stratifies into three major groups that include metabolic (bariatric) surgery, pharmacotherapies, and lifestyle (primarily dietary) strategies. Although listed as a separate category, dietary strategies for obesity remain a central component of any management plan, and often complement other surgical and pharmacotherapeutic options. Indeed, the effectiveness of any management approach for obesity relies upon successful behavioural changes, particularly relating to eating behaviours. In this concise review, we explore the foundational pillars of dietary strategies for obesity: sleep, listening, routine, de-stressing and optimisation of social conditions. We then discuss the importance of balancing dietary macronutrients (including dietary fibre, carbohydrates, protein and ultra-processed foods [UPFs]) as a key dietary strategy for obesity. Although we focus on general principles, we should provide bespoke dietary strategies for our patients, tailored to their individual needs. Rather than judging the utility of a diet based simply on its associated magnitude of weight loss, we should adopt a more holistic perspective in which a dietary strategy is valued for its overall health benefits, including the nurturing of our gut microbiota, to enable them to nurture and protect us. Objective: The objective of this study was to determine internal structure spectral profile of by-products from coffee processing that were affected by added-microorganism fermentation duration in relation to truly absorbed feed nutrient supply in ruminant system. Methods: The by-products from coffee processing were fermented using commercial fermentation product, consisting of various microorganisms: for 0 (control), 7, 14, 21, and 28 days. In this study, carbohydrate-related spectral profiles of coffee by-products were correlated with their chemical and nutritional properties (chemical composition, total digestible nutrient, bioenergy values, carbohydrate sub-fractions and predicted degradation and digestion parameters as well as milk value of feed). The vibrational spectra of coffee by-products samples after fermentation for 0 (control), 7, 14, 21, and 28 days were determined using a JASCO FT/IR-4200 spectroscopy coupled with accessory of attenuated total reflectance (ATR). The molecular spectral analyses with univariate approach were conducted with the OMNIC 7.3 software. Results: Molecular spectral analysis parameters in fermented and non-fermented byproducts from coffee processing included structural carbohydrate, cellulosic compounds, non-structural carbohydrates, lignin compound, CH-bending, structural carbohydrate peak1, structural carbohydrate peak2, structural carbohydrate peak3, hemicellulosic compound, non-structural carbohydrate peak1, non-structural carbohydrate peak2, nonstructural carbohydrate peak3. The study results show that added-microorganism fermentation induced chemical and nutritional changes of coffee by-products including carbohydrate chemical composition profiles, bioenergy value, feed milk value, carbohydrate subfractions, estimated degradable and undegradable fractions in the rumen, and intestinal digested nutrient supply in ruminant system. Conclusion: In conclusion, carbohydrate nutrition value changes by added-microorganism fermentation duration were in an agreement with the change of their spectral profile in the coffee by-products. The studies show that the vibrational ATR-FT/IR spectroscopic technique could be applied as a rapid analytical tool to evaluate fermented by-products and connect with truly digestible carbohydrate supply in ruminant system. Background and Objectives: Broad bean (Vicia faba L.) which belongs to the Fabaceae family, is an herbaceous plant, with indetermined growth, wide range of adaptation and the highest amount of storage protein. Broad bean is considered as a cheap protein source for human and a good option in rotation with cereals and oilseeds due to the high level of nitrogen bio fixation and breaking the cycle of diseases. In this research, the effect of foliar feeding of sucrose and amino acid glutamine on the yield and yield components of tannin-containing (Barket and Shadan) and low amount of tannin (Mehta) varieties of broad bean was evaluated. Materials and Methods: The experiment was conducted as a factorial with two factors based on randomized complete block design in three replications and as a field experiment in Behshahr city. The first factor was broad bean cultivars (Barkat, Shadan, and Mehta) and the second factor was four nutritional levels including control (spraying with distilled water), glutamine amino acid (200 mg), sucrose (5000 mg/l) and amino acid + sucrose. All of the nutritional treatments were sprayed three times with an interval of 15 days from the beginning of flowering. Results: The results showed that feeding with glutamine had a significant effect on pod yield, but sucrose treatment did not have any significant effect on the yield characteristics. The pod yield of Barkat cultivar was significantly higher than the other two cultivars with an average of 26,043 kg of pods per hectare. Also, the Barkat cultivar showed the highest fresh and dry seed yield. In the nutritional value, the highest amount of antioxidant activity was seen in the Mehta+glutamine treatment, which was significantly superior to the Mehta+control, but there was no significant difference with the Mehta+combined nutrition treatment. In two cultivars Barkat and Shadan, the applied treatments could not increase the antioxidant activity compared to the control of these cultivars. The highest amount of starch was seen in Barkat+sucrose cultivar, which was not significantly different from Shadan-+glutamine cultivar. In terms of the amount of soluble protein, Shadan+combined nutrition showed the highest amount, which was significantly superior to all other treatments. Conclusion: Among the various traits related to yield and yield components, only pod yield was affected by glutamine treatment and other nutritional treatments have no significant effect on yield and yield components. The comparison among the three studied cultivars also showed that Barkat cultivar had superior values in terms of traits related to yield as compared with other two cultivars. In general, if the goal is to produce broad beans with high starch and protein, we can recommend the Barkat variety with sucrose treatment and the Shadan variety with combined treatment (sucrose+glutamine), respectively. Ants can found colonies in different ways. One is by claustral colony foundation, when fertilized queens typically have enough nutrients reserved in their bodies to raise the first 'nanitic' worker generation without any foraging activity. This colony-foundation strategy evolved in response to selective pressures (e.g. predators), but it limits the number of nanitic workers. We, therefore, assumed that fed queens might initially rear more nanitic workers, although feeding might also be associated with risks and stress. In this study, we analysed the effects of stress and different diets during the colony-foundation period on the success of colony founding by claustral black garden ant Lasius niger (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) queens. Our findings confirm that regularly fed claustral ant queens raise more pupae and workers, reflecting that limited brood size is a cost of safety behaviour for claustral ant queens. There is another notable aspect of our findings for laboratories: in order to maximize the size of the nanitic worker generation, they can feed claustral ant queens with crickets. Efficient stereo‐ and regioselective O‐glycosylation methods remain essential to capacitate the studies of sugars and sugar derivatives in various disciplines. In this work, we demonstrated an operationally simple and cost‐effective strategy for the synthesis of 1,2‐trans glycosides by the activation of armed O‐glycosyl trichloroacetimidates donor using zinc tetrafluoroborate. This mild, transition metal‐free, and scalable approach allowed stereo‐ and regioselective synthesis of β‐glycosides with a wide range of acceptors containing various protecting groups/functionalities. In Korea and other Asian countries, traditional high-carbohydrate diets are increasingly associated with metabolic syndrome (MetS) and its complications. As dietary patterns shift, there is a growing need to assess the effect of these changes on health outcomes related to MetS. This study aimed to investigate the prospective relationship between carbohydrate consumption and the risk of MetS and its components. We analyzed data from 7902 participants from the Korean Association Resource, part of the Korean Genome and Epidemiology Study Dietary intakes, including carbohydrates and fiber, were assessed using a validated semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire, allowing for the calculation of the proportion of total energy from carbohydrates (P_CARB) and the carbohydrate-to-fiber ratio to assess carbohydrate quality. Blood samples were collected after at least eight hours of fasting for laboratory analysis. We employed Cox proportional hazards models to estimate hazard ratios and 95% confidence intervals, focusing on the relationship between the P_CARB and the risk of developing MetS and its individual components, while adjusting for carbohydrate quality. In the fully adjusted model, which accounted for carbohydrate quality as a covariate, individuals in the highest percentile of the P_CARB showed a significantly increased risk of MetS, hypertriglyceridemia, hypo-high density lipoprotein cholesterolemia, dyslipidemia, and high blood pressure, compared to those in the lowest P_CARB group. Spline curve analyses indicated that the risks for MetS and its components consistently escalated with increasing P_CARB, with all p-values for nonlinearity exceeding 0.05. The findings suggest that higher levels of P_CARB are associated with an increased risk of MetS and related conditions, except for high fasting glucose. In recent years, afforestation has been conducted in China's hot and dry valleys. However, there is still a paucity of knowledge regarding the performance of tree species in these semi-arid regions, particularly with regard to interspecies differences. The present study compares the growth and metabolome characteristics of two widely used cypress species, namely Cupressus chengiana and Platycladus orientalis, grown at two sites with distinct climate conditions in the hot and dry Minjiang Valley in southwestern China. The findings indicate that C. chengiana trees exhibit superior growth rates compared to P. orientalis trees at both study sites. In comparison to P. orientalis trees, C. chengiana trees demonstrated a greater tendency to close their stomata in order to prevent water loss at the hotter and drier site, Llianghekou (LHK). Additionally, C. chengiana trees exhibited significantly lower hydrogen peroxide levels than P. orientalis trees, either due to lower production and/or higher scavenging of reactive oxygen species. C. chengiana trees accumulated soluble sugars as well as sugar derivatives, particularly those involved in sucrose and galactose metabolisms under stressful conditions. The species-specific differences were also reflected in metabolites involved in the tricarboxylic acid cycle, nitrogen, and secondary metabolisms. The metabolome profiles of the two species appeared to be influenced by the prevailing climatic conditions. It appeared that the trees at the drier and hotter site, LHK, were capable of efficient nitrogen uptake from the soil despite the low soil nitrogen concentration. This study is the first to compare the growth performance and metabolic profiles of two widely used tree species with high resistance to adverse conditions. In addition to the species-specific differences and adaptations to different sites, the present study also provides insights into potential management strategies to alleviate abiotic stress, particularly with regard to nitrogen nutrients, in the context of climate change. Cadmium is a highly toxic metal, and its presence can have adverse effects on both human health and aquatic ecosystems. The efficient removal of cadmium from wastewater is therefore of crucial importance, but traditional methods have proved to be inadequate. Thus, technologies for the treatment of wastewater containing cadmium, including adsorption, have been developed. The aim of this study was the preparation of a polymeric material by the grafting reaction of κ-carrageenan and its use as an adsorbent for cadmium removal. This was performed to study the removal capacity of cadmium ions in synthetic solutions, as well as the effects of pH and ions on adsorption capacity, adsorption kinetics, isotherms, and reusability. Additionally, the disinfectant potential of the solution was evaluated for the inactivation of total coliforms and E. coli in river water. The best adsorption capacity was 75.52 ± 1.325 mg g−1, with the kinetics described by the pseudo-second order model. Maximum adsorption capacity (127.6 ± 1.833 mg g−1) and RL (0.0113) were determined using the Langmuir model, the Freundlich model was the one that best fits the experimental data and indicated cooperative adsorption, and the Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherm was used to obtain the adsorption energy and identify that it is physical. The presence of ions K+, Na+, Mg2+, and Ca2+ in a concentration of 0.5% decreased the adsorption capacity, and that at pH 2.0, the adsorption capacity was drastically reduced. The study indicates that the polymer has potential as an adsorbent for removing cadmium from aqueous solutions and exhibits self-disinfecting properties. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The fucosylation of glycoproteins regulates diverse physiological processes. Inhibitors that can control cellular levels of protein fucosylation have consequently emerged as being of high interest. One area where inhibitors of fucosylation have gained significant attention is in the production of afucosylated antibodies, which exhibit superior antibody-dependent cell cytotoxicity as compared to their fucosylated counterparts. Here, we describe β-carbafucose, a fucose derivative in which the endocyclic ring oxygen is replaced by a methylene group, and show that it acts as a potent metabolic inhibitor within cells to antagonize protein fucosylation. β-carbafucose is assimilated by the fucose salvage pathway to form GDP-carbafucose which, due to its being unable to form the oxocarbenium ion-like transition states used by fucosyltransferases, is an incompetent substrate for these enzymes. β-carbafucose treatment of a CHO cell line used for high-level production of the therapeutic antibody Herceptin leads to dose-dependent reductions in core fucosylation without affecting cell growth or antibody production. Mass spectrometry analyses of the intact antibody and N-glycans show that β-carbafucose is not incorporated into the antibody N-glycans at detectable levels. We expect that β-carbafucose will serve as a useful research tool for the community and may find immediate application for the rapid production of afucosylated antibodies for therapeutic purposes. Rapeseed siliques easily shatter after ripening, resulting in a significant amount of grain loss, which delimits the development of rapeseed machine harvest. However, the effect of nitrogen (N) and density interaction on the characteristics of rape siliques and shattering resistance index is still vague. During the 2021–2022 and 2022–2023 growing seasons, we selected the Jiayou No. 5 rapeseed variety and set three N application levels (N1: 90 kg ha−1, N2: 180 kg ha−1, N3: 270 kg ha−1) and two density treatments (M1: 150,000 plants ha−1, M2: 300,000 plants ha−1) to research the effects of N and density interaction on morphological indexes, physiological indexes, shatter resistance index and yield of direct-seeding rapeseed siliques. The silique shatter resistance index, silique's length, weight, moisture content, silique shell's weight, thickness, lignin content, cellulose content and phenylalaninase (PAL) activity all increased first and then decreased with the increase in the N application rate; the N2 treatment increased by 18.38% and 26.92%, respectively, compared to the N1 and N3 treatments; 3.65%, 2.48%; 6.70%, 3.58%; 20.46%, 18.33%; 5.97%, 5.96%; 8.82%, 9.60%; 9.12%, 19.90%; 43.85%, 69%; 2.10%, 11.04%. Compared with the M1 treatment, the silique shatter resistance index, silique's length, weight, moisture content, silique shell's weight, thickness, lignin content, cellulose content and PAL activity were lower under M2 treatment. Correlation analysis demonstrated that the silique's length, water content, silique shell's weight, thickness, lignin content, cellulose content and PAL activity were significantly positively correlated with the silique shatter resistance index. Nonstructural carbohydrate reserves of stems and roots underpin overall tree fitness and productivity under short-rotation management practices such as coppicing for bioenergy. While sucrose and starch comprise the predominant stem carbohydrate reserves of Populus , utilization for fitness and agricultural productivity is understood primarily in terms of starch turnover. The tonoplast sucrose transport protein SUT4 modulates sucrose export from source leaves to distant sinks during photoautotrophic growth, but the possibility of its involvement in remobilizing carbohydrates from storage organs during heterotrophic growth has not been explored. Here, we used PtaSUT4- knockout mutants of Populus tremula × P. alba (INRA 717-1B4) in winter (cool) and summer (warm) glasshouse coppicing experiments to assess SUT4 involvement in reserve utilization. Conditions preceding and supporting summer sprouting were considered favorable for growth, while those preceding and supporting cool temperature sprouting were suboptimal akin to conditions associated with coppicing as generally practiced. Epicormic bud emergence was delayed in sut4 mutants following lower temperature 'winter' but not summer coppicing. Winter xylem hexose increases were observed in control but not in sut4 stumps after coppicing. The magnitude of starch and sucrose reserve depletion was similar in control and sut4 stumps during the winter and did not explain the sprouting and xylem hexose differences. However, winter maintenance costs appeared higher in sut4 based partly on Krebs cycle intermediate levels. In control plants, bark accrual of abundant defense metabolites, including salicinoids and condensed tannins, was higher in summer than in winter, but this increase of summer defense allocations was attenuated in sut4 mutants. Three sweet potato genotypes NSP-2, NSP-6 (white flesh) and NSP-12 (orange flesh), were subjected under different processing techniques (boiling, steaming, and roasting) to check the nutritional status. Sugars like glucose, fructose, sucrose, and maltose was increased under roasting treatment for all of the genotypes. Crude fiber, cellulose, hemicellulose and ash content were significantly deferred within different genotypes but different treatments remained at par with various processing techniques. Steaming was proved to be the best treatment to decrease loss of vitamin C and phenol content where as roasting was the best performing treatmant to decrease the antinutrients like phytic acid and trypsin inhibitor activity. Comparatively, higher antioxidant activity was observed in steaming treatmet. NSP-12 revealed comparatively lower Glycemic index (GI) indicating high amylase: amylopectin ratio may become a good source of good carbohydrate for diabetic friendly food for near future. Glycans, carbohydrates, and glycoconjugates are involved in many crucial biological processes, such as disease development, immune responses, and cell–cell recognition. Glycans and carbohydrates are known for the large number of isomeric features associated with their structures, making analysis challenging compared with other biomolecules. Mass spectrometry has become the primary method of structural characterization for carbohydrates, glycans, and glycoconjugates. Metal adduction is especially important for the mass spectrometric analysis of carbohydrates and glycans. Metal‐ion adduction to carbohydrates and glycoconjugates affects ion formation and the three‐dimensional, gas‐phase structures. Herein, we discuss how metal‐ion adduction impacts ionization, ion mobility, ion activation and dissociation, and hydrogen/deuterium exchange for carbohydrates and glycoconjugates. We also compare the use of different metals for these various techniques and highlight the value in using metals as charge carriers for these analyses. Finally, we provide recommendations for selecting a metal for analysis of carbohydrate adducts and describe areas for continued research. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Soil carbohydrates play a vital role in maintaining the health of soil and ensuring that ecosystems function properly. The method used in this study for measuring carbohydrate content in soil is quick, effective and easy. The investigation involved using three techniques to extract 45 soil samples of different soil texture; hot water, cool water and classical methods. The extracted samples were then analyzed for carbohydrates using two techniques; the widely accepted Phenol Sulfuric Acid method and the newly developed Sulfuric Acid UV method. The results revealed that the hot water extraction method consistently yielded higher levels of carbohydrates compared to the other methods. Interestingly the newly developed Sulfuric Acid UV method consistently produced similar results to those obtained from the well established Phenol Sulfuric Acid method. These results suggest that the novel Sulfuric Acid UV method, which relies on absorption in the ultraviolet region to analyze soil carbohydrate content is indeed a viable approach. Carbohydrates, which are a vital dietary component, undergo digestion and gut fermentation through microbial enzymes to produce beneficial short-chain fatty acids. Certain carbohydrates selectively modulate the gut microbiota, impacting host health. Carbohydrate-active enzymes within the gut microbiota significantly contribute to carbohydrate utilization and microbial diversity. Despite their importance, the structural complexity of carbohydrates poses analytical challenges. However, recent advancements, notably, mass spectrometry, have allowed for their characterization and functional analysis. This review examines the intricate relationship between dietary carbohydrates and the gut microbiota, highlighting the crucial role of advanced analytical techniques in understanding their diversity and implications. These advancements provide valuable insights into carbohydrate bioactivity. Integrating high-throughput analysis with next-generation sequencing provides deeper insights into gut microbial interactions, potentially revealing which carbohydrate structures are beneficial for gut health. Western diet is known to contribute to intestinal dysbiosis and the progression of inflammation. Although the Turkish diet has different macronutrient contents, the intestinal inflammatory disease incidences in Türkiye are comparable to Western countries. Thus, we hypothesized that high carbohydrate diets also contribute to inflammation of the colon. We compared diets with different macronutrient compositions and investigated their effects on colonic microbiota, cytokine, histology, and tight junction protein levels. High carbohydrate diet caused the lowest microbial diversity and is accompanied by the highest expression of interleukin-1β and claudin-1. A low carbohydrate diet with zero fiber resulted in the lowest inflammatory markers as well as the lowest occludin and claudin levels. Overall, our results indicate that carbohydrate and fiber contents of the diets are important contributors to colon health. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim - to summarize literature data on the pathogenetic mechanisms of the diarrheal syndrome development in children with rotavirus infection and to determine the role of carbohydrate malabsorption syndrome in it through a complex analysis of literature reviews and empirical studies. Rotavirus infection (RVI) remains the main cause of severe dehydrating gastroenteritis in children under five years of age. One of the most important pathogenetic links of rotavirus gastroenteritis is the development of osmotic diarrhea induced by carbohydrate malabsorption syndrome. Its development is associated with disaccharidase insufficiency and impaired absorption of monosaccharides in the small intestine. Carbohydrate malabsorption syndrome is found in 67.0-98.3 % of children with RVI. Its laboratory manifestations (an increase in levels of fecal carbohydrates and lactose) are observed starting from the first days of the disease, and the maximum indicators are recorded in the period from the fifth to the seventh day. Conclusions. Carbohydrate malabsorption syndrome is observed in the absolute majority of children with RVI, and its maximum severity is noted from the fifth to the seventh day of the disease, being realized mainly due to lactase deficiency. The severity of carbohydrate malabsorption syndrome can be influenced by concomitant pathological conditions, that lead to a decrease in the activity of disaccharidases in the small intestine, and the metabolic activity of the intestinal microbiota. Background: Epilepsy is a neurological disorder characterized by anomalous brain activity, convulsions and odd behaviour. Ten pyrrole carbohydrate based analogues (Va-Vj) were synthesized with amide as intermediate in the current research with the goal of reducing convulsions and seizures. Materials and Methods: The newly developed compounds were synthesized. Numerous methods (IR, NMR, mass, elemental analysis, etc.,) were used to characterize these substances. Several models were used to test each of these molecules for anticonvulsant activity. By using the rotarod and ethanol potentiation techniques, neurotoxicity was also evaluated. The study meticulously examined each parameter and showed ADME predictions for each of the 10 congeners that were produced. In addition, studies on molecular docking employed the GABA-A target protein. Results: Anticonvulsant screening results identified compounds Ve, Vd, Vc and Va as the most efficacious of the series. All synthesized equivalents largely passed the neurotoxicity test. The results of molecular docking revealed significant interactions at the active site of GABA-A with Ile C:242, Asp C:424, Phe D:307, Arg C:250 Trp C:241 and Phe C:240 and the outcomes were good and in agreement with in vivo findings. Conclusion: The study's findings showed that some substances had promising anticonvulsant properties that were comparable to those of the standard drug. The highly active novel anticonvulsant analogues may therefore represent a possible lead and additional studies may result in a potential new drug candidate. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Sweet corn is frequently consumed in the US and contains carbohydrates as major macronutrients. This study examined the effects of blanching, freezing, and canning on carbohydrates in sweet corn. Fresh bi-color sweet corn was picked in the field and processed immediately into frozen and canned samples. Simple sugars, starch, and dietary fiber (DF) (including total DF (TDF), insoluble DF (IDF) and two fractions of soluble DF (SDF)) were measured according to the AOAC methods. Additional glycomic analysis including oligosaccharides, monosaccharide composition of total polysaccharides (MCTP) and glycosidic linkage of total polysaccharides (GLTP) were analyzed using UHPLC-MS. Sucrose is the major simple sugar, and IDF is the main contributor to TDF. Sucrose and total simple sugar concentrations were not altered after blanching or freezing but were significantly reduced in canned samples. Kestose was the only oligosaccharide identified in sweet corn and decreased in all heat-treated or frozen samples. Starch content decreased in frozen samples but increased in canned samples. While two SDF fractions did not differ across all samples, blanching, freezing and canning resulted in increases in TDF and IDF. Six monosaccharides were identified as major building blocks of the total polysaccharides from MCTP analysis. Glucose and total monosaccharide concentrations increased in two canned samples. GLTP was also profoundly altered by different food processing methods. This study provided insights into the changes in the content and quality of carbohydrates in sweet corn after food processing. The data are important for accurate assessment of the carbohydrate intake from different sweet corn products.

Seaweed from macroalgae and cellulose from nonwood materials have gained attention in various fields. This study explores how seaweed and cellulose nanofibers (CNF) interact to form 3D networks in composite bioaerogels. The ratio of CNF and seaweed was varied to see how it affects the aerogel’s inside and its properties. The observations show that the biocomposite aerogel is more rigid and shrinks less than using a single biopolymer. The CNF aerogel has a fine, thin network structure, and the seaweed aerogel has a thin sheet structure. The biocomposite aerogel combines both a fine network and a thin sheet structure. The composite aerogel’s mechanical properties are significantly influenced by seaweed composition. The introduction of CNF increases elasticity, while seaweed enhances firmness. Generated computer modelling revealed that the abundant hydroxyl groups in CNF facilitated the formation of intermolecular bonds with seaweed. The bonding led to increased adhesion and entanglement between biopolymers, consequently enhancing elasticity and establishing a stable intermolecular interaction. The 3D X-ray imaging model shows that the skeletal framework primarily consists of seaweed biopolymer, with CNF serving to reinforce this structure thus enhancing the mechanical properties and robustness of the composite bioaerogels.

Introduction:Gunas act as tools for predicting or assessing the karma. Understanding the guna will help in the application of dravyas in treatment. Certain experimental techniques are being used as parameters for the evaluation of Gurvadi gunas. Ushna guna is having a prominent action on the Jatharagni and it helps in Pachana. The present study is an attempt to find out the possibility of employing carbohydrate estimation by hydrolysis in assessing Ushna-Sheeta guna. This was done by determining the effect of selected Ushna-Sheeta guna drugs on hydrolysis of Mudga and ultimately on its carbohydrate content.Methods:Estimation of carbohydrates of Mudga, Maricha, and Usheera was done by Anthrone method. Then Mudga was subjected to hydrolysis in the presence of Maricha in one sample and Usheera in another sample. These samples were subjected to estimation of carbohydrates.Results:The mean carbohydrate content in Mudga alone was 107.69 mg/100 mg. After hydrolysis of Mudga in the presence of Maricha (8:2), the mean carbohydrate content of sample increased to 114.65 mg/100 mg of sample. Similarly, after hydrolysis of Mudga in the presence of Usheera (8:2), the mean carbohydrate content of sample increased to 110.7 mg/100 mg of sample.Conclusion:Percentage of conversion is 1.9% in Maricha group and is 17.81% in Usheera group, which is against the Ayurveda concept of Ushna guna aiding in Pachana. The ushna and sheeta gunas might come into action in the presence of digestive enzymes and this might again depend on other constituents of drugs.

Cyanobacteria are microorganisms that grow rapidly in an aquatic medium, showing the capacity of accumulations of biocompounds subsequently converted into value-added biocompounds. The cyanobacterium Spirulina maxima can produce pigments besides accumulating significant amounts of carbohydrates and proteins. An alternative to reducing biomass production costs at an industrial scale is the use of landfill leachate in the growing medium, as well as the mitigation of this pollutant. The objective of this work was to cultivate Spirulina maxima in a medium supplemented with leachate, using the design of experiments to evaluate the effects of leachate concentration (% v/v), light source, and light intensity in an airlift photobioreactor, analyzing them as a response to the productivity of biomass, phycocyanin, carbohydrates, and biochar. The highest values of productivity (mg L−1d−1) were 97.44 ± 3.20, 12.82 ± 0.38, 6.19 ± 1.54, and 34.79 ± 3.62 for biomass, carbohydrates, phycocyanin, and biochar, respectively, adjusted for experiment 2 with the factors of leachate concentration (5.0% v/v), light source (tubular LED), and luminosity (54 µmol m−2 s−1), respectively. The use of leachate as a substitute for macronutrients in Zarrouk’s medium for the cultivation of Spirulina maxima is a viable alternative in the production of biocompounds as long as it is used at an appropriate level.

Abstract Background This study examines the association between micronutrient intake, anthropometric indices, lipid accumulation, and blood lipid risk index among Tehranian women. Methods A cross‐sectional study was conducted on 556 Tehranian women. Dietary intake was measured using a Food Frequency Questionnaire. Biochemical assessment and anthropometric indices were measured, and demographic information and physical activity were collected. Results Participants with the highest intake of carbohydrates were more prone to obesity. Conversely, those in the top tertile for protein intake had a lower likelihood of obesity and higher levels of lipid accumulation product (LAP). The highest fat consumers had a 63% decreased chance of having a high Castelli's Risk Index 1 (CRI‐1). A higher glycemic index (GI) and glycemic load (GL) were linked to an increased probability of a high atherogenic coefficient (AC). Women in the top tertile of GL were significantly more likely to be obese and had lower odds for high LAP. Participants in the top tertile of aromatic amino acids/branched chain amino acids (AAA/BCAA) had significantly lower chances of high CRI‐1 and a high atherogenic index of plasma (AIP). Those in the highest tertile of monounsaturated fatty acids/polyunsaturated fatty acids (MUFA/PUFA) had lower odds of obesity and high AIP. Conclusions The amount of carbohydrate (g) and protein intake (%), dietary GL, and the ratio of MUFA to PUFA were associated with obesity. The amount of fat intake (g) and AAA/BCAA indices were associated with CRI‐1. LAP decreased with an increase in GL. AC increased with an increase in GI and GL. AAA/BCAA and MUFA/PUFA were associated with AIP.

In recent years, researchers have often modulated the sensory and functional properties of foods through the interaction among various food components. Phenolic acids, proteins and carbohydrates widely exist and play important roles in flour products. Until now, existing studies primarily concentrate on the interactions of phenolic acid with protein and carbohydrate, along with their applications in several fields such as food processing and healthcare. The intricate interactions in the phenolic acid-protein-carbohydrate ternary system impart different sensory and functional properties to flour products. In this article, we review the research progress on the interactions among phenolic acid, protein and carbohydrate and their influence on the sensory and functional properties of bread dough, hoping to provide theoretical guidance for the application of the ternary system composed of phenolic acids, proteins and carbohydrates in flour products.

Abstract Background The school-age is a crucial period of physical and cognitive growth, which requires an assessment of dietary intake and its influence on body weight and height. This study aims to determine the association between the quality and quantity of carbohydrate intake with selected anthropometric indices in primary school girls in Kerman City, Iran. Methods This cross-sectional study was conducted on 330 primary school girls ages 6–12 years in Kerman. We used a validated and reliable dish-based 185-item food frequency questionnaire to evaluate people’s food intake. We assessed the amount of carbohydrates in children’s diets as the percentage of daily calories and grams per day. We used dietary fiber intake (grams/day), the glycemic load, the ratio of whole grain to total grain, and the ratio of solid carbohydrates to total carbohydrates to assess carbohydrate quality. Height, weight, and arm circumference were measured. We calculated body mass index (BMI) by dividing the weight in kilograms by the height in centimeters squared. We used the World Health Organization z-scores charts for girls 5 to 19 years old to assess z-scores for BMI-for-age (BAZ), height-for-age (HAZ), and weight-for-age (WAZ). Socioeconomic status and physical activity were assessed. We used ANOVA and ANCOVA statistical tests to assess the association between anthropometric indices and carbohydrate quantity and quality parameters. Chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) is a vital grain legume, offering an excellent balance of protein, carbohydrates, fats, fiber, essential micronutrients, and vitamins that can contribute to addressing the global population’s increasing food and nutritional demands. Chickpea protein offers a balanced source of amino acids with high bioavailability. Moreover, due to its balanced nutrients and affordable price, chickpea is an excellent alternative to animal protein, offering a formidable tool for combating hidden hunger and malnutrition, particularly prevalent in low-income countries. This review examines chickpea’s nutritional profile, encompassing protein, amino acids, carbohydrates, fatty acids, micronutrients, vitamins, antioxidant properties, and bioactive compounds of significance in health and pharmaceutical domains. Emphasis is placed on incorporating chickpeas into diets for their myriad health benefits and nutritional richness, aimed at enhancing human protein and micronutrient nutrition. We discuss advances in plant breeding and genomics that have facilitated the discovery of diverse genotypes and key genomic variants/regions/quantitative trait loci contributing to enhanced macro- and micronutrient contents and other quality parameters. Furthermore, we explore the potential of innovative breeding tools such as CRISPR/Cas9 in enhancing chickpea’s nutritional profile. Envisioning chickpea as a nutritionally smart crop, we endeavor to safeguard food security, combat hunger and malnutrition, and promote dietary diversity within sustainable agrifood systems. Introduction: Carbohydrates, which make up 20 to 25% of tea beverages, are responsible for their flavor and bioactivity. Carbohydrates of pu-erh tea change during microbial fermentation and require further research. In this study, we examined the carbohydrate metabolism and expression of carbohydrateactive enzyme genes during the fermentation of tea leaves with Aspergillus luchuensis. Methods: Widely targeted metabolomics analysis, high-performance anionexchange chromatography measurements, and transcriptomics were used in this study. Results: After fermentation, the levels of soluble sugar, hemicellulose, lignin, eight monosaccharides, and seven sugar alcohols increased. Meanwhile, the relative contents of polysaccharides, D-sorbitol, D-glucose, and cellulose decreased. High expression of 40 genes encoding 16 carbohydrate enzymes was observed during fermentation (FPKM>10). These genes encode L-iditol 2-dehydrogenase, pectinesterase, polygalacturonase, α-amylase, glucoamylase, endoglucanase, β-glucosidase, β-galactosidase, α-galactosidase, α-glucosidase, and glucose-6-phosphate isomerase, among others. Simple Summary: Carbohydrate is an important energy nutrient in the feed of aquatic animals. Generally, aquatic animals usually exhibit a varying efficiency in utilizing different carbohydrate sources. In order to understand the carbohydrate utilization efficiency, this study investigated the physiological responses of soft-shelled turtles (Pelodiscus sinensis) that were fed four types of carbohydrates with different complexities and configurations. The results indicated that the best growth performance and feed efficiency were found in the starch diet, followed by the glucose, fructose, and cellulose groups in sequence. Dietary starch demonstrated a robust lipogenic function by inducing the expression of the genes involved in glucolipid metabolism, with the results of elevated plasma triglyceride levels and an increased lipid content in both the whole body and the liver. Glucose and fructose diets caused postprandial hyperglycemia in P. sinensis due to the un-inhibited gluconeogenesis. P. sinensis that were fed a fructose diet did not exhibit a higher lipid deposition compared to the glucose diet, as seen from mammals. Cellulose was not a suitable energy source for P. sinensis. A 60 day feeding trial was conducted to evaluate the impacts of dietary carbohydrates with different complexities and configurations on the growth, plasma parameters, apparent digestibility, intestinal microbiota, glucose, and lipid metabolism of soft-shelled turtles (Pelodiscus sinensis). Four experimental diets were formulated by adding 170 g/kg glucose, fructose, α-starch, or cellulose, respectively. A total of 280 turtles (initial body weight 5.11 ± 0.21 g) were distributed into 28 tanks and were fed twice daily. The results showed that the best growth performance and apparent digestibility was observed in the α-starch group, followed by the glucose, fructose, and cellulose groups (p < 0.05). Monosaccharides (glucose and fructose) significantly enhanced the postprandial plasma glucose levels and hepatosomatic index compared to polysaccharides, due to the un-inhibited gluconeogenesis (p < 0.05). Starch significantly up-regulated the expression of the genes involved in glycolysis, pentose phosphate pathway, lipid anabolism and catabolism, and the transcriptional regulation factors of glycolipid metabolism (srebp and chrebp) (p < 0.05), resulting in higher plasma triglyceride levels and lipid contents in the liver and the whole body. The fructose group exhibited a lower lipid deposition compared with the glucose group, mainly by inhibiting the expression of srebp and chrebp. Cellulose enhanced the proportion of opportunistic pathogenic bacteria. In conclusion, P. sinensis utilized α-starch better than glucose, fructose, and cellulose. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
