'Xinomavro' (V. vinifera L.) is an important native red wine grape variety in Northern Greece, particularly in PDO (protected designation of origin) regions. Despite its significance, there is limited research on the effects of pruning type and severity on 'Xinomavro' vine physiology, yield, and berry quality across diverse environmental conditions. This study aimed to address this knowledge gap and provide growers with crucial information for optimizing vineyard management practices. The study was conducted over two consecutive years (2016 and 2017) in a vineyard in Thessaloniki, Northern Greece. Four treatments (B12: 12 buds on 6 spurs, B24: 24 buds on 12 spurs, M12: 12 buds on 2 canes, and M24: 24 buds on 4 canes) combining two bud load levels (12 or 24 count nodes) and two pruning types (short spurs or long canes) were applied to 'Xinomavro' vines in a complete block randomized design. The vine water status, gas exchange, canopy characteristics, yield components, and berry composition were measured. Bud load and pruning type significantly influenced vine canopy development, microclimate, and yield components. Short pruning with high bud load (B24) resulted in denser canopies and higher yields, whereas cane pruning (M12 and M24) led to more open canopies and improved berry quality indicators. Treatment effects on berry composition were inconsistent across years but showed a tendency for higher anthocyanin and total phenol content in cane-pruned vines. This study demonstrates that pruning type (short or long fruiting units) may have a greater impact on vine growth, yield, and berry composition than bud load alone in 'Xinomavro' vines. An urgent challenge posed by climate change in warm grapevine-growing areas is accelerated ripening, which leads to rapid sugar accumulation while phenolics and aroma traits lag behind. Techniques that enable selectively delaying the sugar accumulation process without affecting the accumulation of secondary metabolites are essential. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of apical-to-cluster defoliation, manually applied in 2019 at the onset of veraison (D1) or 20 days later (D2), which removed about 30–40% of the pending total leaf area without altering the cluster microclimate compared with a non-defoliated control (C). Ripening trends, vegetative growth, yield components, and the final grape and wine composition, as well as wine sensorial attributes, were assessed. Although both treatments significantly lowered the final leaf area-to-yield ratio (0.80–0.90 m2/kg) compared with the 1.35 m2/kg recorded in the C vines, only D1 reduced the final total soluble solids (TSS) at harvest (2 °Brix less than C). However, the total anthocyanins were similarly limited, and titratable acidity (TA) did not differ from the C vines. The D1 wine was deemed similar to that made from control plants. Conversely, D2 failed to delay ripening, yet the D2 wine was deemed superior in terms of olfactory intensity, body, fruitiness, balance, and overall preference. Although the study was conducted over a single season, the results are robust enough to conclude that the timing of defoliation—i.e., the level of TSS concurrently reached by the C treatment—is crucial to achieving specific effects. Early defoliation appears valid for postponing ripening into a cooler period, making it quite interesting in warm–hot areas with a very long growing season; a much later defoliation, likely due to the interaction between mean canopy age and more light filtering from above the cluster zone, can elevate the quality of and appreciation for the final wine. Factors such as extreme temperatures, light radiation, and nutritional condition influence the physiological, biochemical, and molecular processes associated with fruit development and its quality. Besides abiotic stresses, biotic constraints can also affect fruit growth and quality. Moreover, there can be interactions between stressful conditions. However, it is challenging to predict and generalize the risks of climate change scenarios on seasonal patterns of growth, development, yield, and quality of fruit species because their responses are often highly complex and involve changes at multiple levels. Advancements in genetic editing technologies hold great potential for the agricultural sector, particularly in enhancing fruit crop traits. These improvements can be tailored to meet consumer preferences, which is crucial for commercial success. Canopy management and innovative training systems are also key factors that contribute to maximizing yield efficiency and improving fruit quality, which are essential for the competitiveness of orchards. Moreover, the creation of habitats that support pollinators is a critical aspect of sustainable agriculture, as they play a significant role in the production of many crops, including fruits. Incorporating these strategies allows fruit growers to adapt to changing climate conditions, which is increasingly important for the stability of food production. By investing in these areas, fruit growers can stay ahead of challenges and opportunities in the industry, ultimately leading to increased success and profitability. Inadequate lateral branch development can lead to decreased apple (Malus ×domestica Borkh.) orchard productivity and profitability in modern high-density orchard systems. Although plant growth regulator applications are used to increase lateral branching on leaders of young apple trees, inconsistent responses have been observed in the southeastern United States. In North Carolina and Washington, three experiments were conducted to identify effective leader management strategies to increase lateral branching. Effects and interactions of leader bagging, 6-benzyladenine (6-BA), and 6-BA + gibberellic acid (GA4+7) on lateral branch development of 1-year-old leaders were evaluated. Across all experiments, leader bagging was an influential factor. When compared with unbagged trees, leader bagging increased lateral branch number (20% to 48%), number of feathers (74% to 125%), average branch length (28% to 34%), and total linear bearing surface (428%) of the treated section of the leader. Blossom cluster density and final fruit set were increased in bagged trees, 65% and 36%, respectively. At the rates and timings tested, 6-BA and 6-BA + GA4+7 were generally ineffective in stimulating lateral branching and interactions among the factors evaluated were not influential. Leader bagging was an effective lateral branch induction strategy, although the mechanism of action is poorly understood. Future research to characterize the bagged environment and/or physiological responses to bagging may aid in the development of future environmentally sustainable technologies to stimulate lateral branching of apple trees. Exploring new field strategies for adapting winegrowing regions to the adverse effects of climate change becomes imperative. This study focuses on the effects of canopy architecture through the trellis systems leaning of North–South oriented vineyard’s rows vertical shoot positioned (VSP) system by 30° towards either the East (ESP) or the West (WSP) as a possible adaptation technique. The trial was conducted over two seasons in a Vitis vinifera L. cv. Bobal vineyard located in Requena (Valencia), eastern Spain, under a temperate-warm climate. The canopy leaning was considered to affect the radiation load and its timing with potential effects on vine physiology and grape metabolism and, consequently, on grape and wine quality. Leaning treatments affected vegetative growth, likely due to slight differences in vine water status. In comparison to VSP and ESP, WSP intercepts more light in the morning, when the photosynthetic capacity of the vines is at its highest. However, this results in a more negative vine water potential, which in turn leads to a reduction in vigour with no impact on yield. Musts from the WSP showed a tendency to increase total acidity compared to VSP, while ESP tended to decrease it. This was likely due to the reduction in temperature within the cluster microclimate in WSP in comparison to the ESP and VSP treatments. In addition, musts from the WSP treatment showed higher colour intensity, anthocyanins and polyphenols, potentially attributable to its more negative potentials, likely due to its more negative potentials, which may have prompted the synthesis of phenolic compounds. Consequently, wines from the WSP treatment displayed higher total acidity and lower pH, as well as higher colour intensity, anthocyanins, and polyphenolic content. In addition, WSP wines had higher concentrations of esters and higher alcohols. The improvements in grape and wine composition are likely due to an increased cluster radiation interception in the morning and reduced heating in the afternoon when VPD is higher. Our findings demonstrate that canopy management by leaning VSP vines towards the West can be a useful technique for adapting grape and wine composition to climate change and provide insights into its physiological basis.

Manipulation of the source–sink relationship through bark incision is an ancient practice that considerably restricts vegetative growth and subsequently improves fruit production. Girdling intends making an incision of different thickness into the phloem entirely circumscribing the trunk. It inhibits the movement of photosynthates from source to the area below the plant parts from where phloem has been removed. Thereby carbohydrate accumulation and gas exchange are reduced due to feedback inhibition of photosynthesis above the girdled portion. Consequently, plant roots become devoid of photosynthates which results in the reduction of root metabolism that substantially reduces growth and development of both roots and shoots. This methodology is extremely effective controlling vegetative growth, enhancement of fruit yield, and quality attributes in horticultural crops. Duration and time of girdling can have profound effect on plant metabolic reactions, sometimes leading to undesirable outcomes. Additionally, the healing process after girdling plays a crucial role in minimizing any potential damage to the tree and ensuring its recovery. Despite being utilized for many centuries, the precise impact of girdling on plant metabolism still remains unclear. The review provides a concise overview of the girdling procedure, its mechanism, the healing process, and its effect on tree stature, flowering, fruit yield, and quality in temperate fruit crops. Spring frost is a perennial and widespread problem across many cool climatic and high-elevation winegrowing regions of the world. Vitis vinifera L. cv. Pinot noir is an early budding cultivar; thus, it is particularly susceptible to late-spring frost damage. In late April 2022, an advective frost event occurred throughout Western Oregon winegrowing regions and subsequently damaged a substantial number of commercial vineyards. Growers often are unsure of how to manage grapevines after a frost event. Limited research has shown little-to-no effect of pruning vs. non-pruning strategies on vine yield and productivity. In addition, pruning a frost-affected vineyard incurs additional labor costs that may offset the cost–benefit balance for the grower. Therefore, in this experiment, the effect of two different post-frost pruning treatments (cane pruning and spur pruning) on vine yield, berry composition, and vine vegetative growth were tested. No effect of post-frost pruning treatments on vine yield, berry composition, and vine vegetative characteristics was observed. Cluster numbers, cluster weights, and berries per cluster only differed between cane- vs. spur-pruned vines. Summer pruning is an important horticultural operation that is performed to manipulate tree response so as to make it better manageable without a reduction in yield and fruit quality. But the timing is also an important factor in performing this event. Keeping in view the above facts, the present investigation was carried out to elucidate the 'differential response of summer pruning timing on cropping behavior in low-chill peach cvs. Florida Prince and Shan-i-Punjab'. The experiment was carried out at the experimental orchard of the Department of Fruit Science, College of Horticulture and Forestry, Neri, Hamirpur (HP) during the years 2018–2019 and 2019–2020. There are six treatments in the experiment, each with four replications. T1: no pruning; T2: 25% summer pruning on July 10th + winter pruning (WP); T3: 25% summer pruning on July 20th +WP; T4: 25% summer pruning on July 30th +WP; T5: 25% summer pruning on August 10th +WP); and T6: standard winter pruning (SWP). According to the study's findings, combining 25% summer pruning on July 10th with winter pruning resulted in the greatest improvement in terms of vegetative, flowering or blooming, and qualitative parameters, namely fruit weight, fruit shape index, total soluble solid, and sugar content. Recently, the crop forcing technique (summer pruning that "forces" the vine to start a new cycle) has proven to be effective in delaying the harvest date and increasing must acidity, but also reducing the yield. However, recent information on deficit irrigation strategies combined with the crop forcing technique reveals that the crop forcing technique reduces irrigation water use efficiency. Two experiments were conducted. Experiment 1 was a 4-year trial to test the effect of the forcing pruning date on the phenology, yield, yield components and water requirements when post-veraison water stress is applied. In this experiment, the treatments were unforced vines (UF-RDI) and forced vines with a forcing pruning date about 70 (F1-RDI) and 100 (F2-RDI) days after budburst. The harvest date was delayed 34 (F1) and 66 (F2) days increasing the must acidity and malic acid concentration in the forced treatments. However, both forced treatments had a reduced yield (36% in F1 and 49% in F2) and irrigation water use efficiency (12% in F1 and 65% in F2). Experiment 2 was a 2-year trial in which irrigation was suppressed before the forcing pruning in F1 (F1-Pre) and F2 (F2-Pre) and after veraison. The yield, yield components, must quality and irrigation were compared to forced vines with irrigation suppression only after veraison (F1-RDI and F2-RDI). For the entire experiment, both treatments in which irrigation was suppressed before the forcing pruning reduced the amount of irrigation supplied (10% in F1-Pre and 30% in F2-Pre) with no negative effects on the yield, yield components or must quality when compared to F-RDI treatments. Grapevine productivity, and berry and wine flavonoid concentration, depend on the interactions of cultivar, environment, and applied cultural practices. We characterized the effects that mechanical leaf removal and irrigation treatments had on the flavonoid concentration of 'Merlot' (Vitis vinifera, L.) grape berries and wines in a hot climate over two growing seasons with contrasting precipitation patterns. Leaves were removed by machine, either at prebloom (PBLR), or at post-fruit-set (PFLR), or not removed (control) and irrigation was either applied as sustained deficit irrigation (SDI) at 0.8 of crop evapotranspiration (ETc) from budbreak to fruit set, or regulated deficit irrigation (RDI) at 0.8 ETc from bud break to fruit set, 0.5 ETc from fruit set to veraison, and 0.8 ETc from veraison to harvest, of ETc In 2014, PFLR reduced the leaf area index (LAI) compared to control. The RDI decreased season-long leaf water potential (ΨInt) compared to SDI. However, in 2015, none of the treatments affected LAI or ΨInt. In 2014, berry flavonoid concentrations were reduced by PBLR as well as SDI. SDI increased the flavonoid concentrations in wine, and PFLR increased some wine flavonols in one season. No factor affected the concentrations of wine proanthocyanidins or mean degree of polymerization. Thus, mechanical PFLR and RDI may increase berry flavonoid accumulation without yield reduction, in red wine grapes cultivars grown in hot climates when precipitation after bud break is lacking. However, spring precipitation may influence the effectiveness of these practices as evidenced by this work in a changing climate.

Wine is a product obtained through fermentation process, the trans-resveratrol is a polyphenol derived from grapes and a natural antioxidant that passes into wine. The trans-resveratrol is a rare compound with the highest content in the red wine and a positive physiological effect on human organism. The present study was conducted in three years period from 2020 until 2022 at the Agricultural university-Plovdiv experimental vineyard, located near the village of Brestnik. Four Syrah wine variety clones were included and eight experimental wines have been made during the experimental period. In all tested wines, the presence of trans-resveratrol was detected but its amount was higher in clone 524 (V4) with non-reduced yield (3.35, 4.36, 7.02 mg/L), and in clone 100 (V5) with reduced yield (5.24, 3.75, 7.23 mg/L). Reducing the bunch numbers at the “pea size” stage did not significantly influence the content of trans-resveratrol. The wine antioxidant properties were directly affected by the clone and the grape harvest and was under the terroir influence. Pruning is a common practice in citrus for various reasons. These include controlling and shaping the canopy; improving phytosanitary health, productivity, and fruit quality; and facilitating operations such as harvesting and phytosanitary treatments. Because pruning is an expensive operation, its need is sometimes questioned. However, it has been proven to be particularly important in Mediterranean citriculture, which is oriented towards producing fruits for a high-quality demanding fresh market. Herein, we summarize and explain the pruning techniques used in Mediterranean citriculture and refer to the main purposes of each pruning type, considering citrus morphology and physiology. This research was carried out to determine the effects of leaf water potential and defoliation treat-ments on the oenological properties of grape must. Merlot/41B graft combination grapevines were cultivated in Chateau Kalpak vineyards in Tekirdağ, Şarköy. The trial was carried out for two con-secutive years in the vineyard in the vegetation periods of 2019-2020 and 2020-2021. Leaf water potential treatments were S0 (Control = no irrigation), S1 (-0.3/-0.5 MPa), S2 (-0.5/-0.7 MPa) and S3 (<-0.7 MPa) and defoliation treatments were implemented as; Control(C), Full Window(FW), Right Window(RW) and Left Window (LW). As a result, the S2 (-0.5 MPa and -0.7 MPa) stress level resulted in more balanced responses, as seen in the combination of years in terms of both primary and secondary metabolites. In commercial wine grape production, canopy management practices are applied to control the source-sink balance and improve the cluster microclimate to enhance berry composition. The aim of this study was to identify the optimal ranges of berry solar radiation exposure (exposure) for upregulation of flavonoid biosynthesis and thresholds for their degradation, to evaluate how canopy management practices such as leaf removal, shoot thinning, and a combination of both affect the grapevine (Vitis vinifera L. cv. Cabernet Sauvignon) yield components, berry composition, and flavonoid profile. Three experiments were conducted in Oakville, CA, USA. First experiment assessed changes in the grape flavonoid content driven by four degrees of exposure. In the second experiment, individual grape berries subjected to different exposures were collected from two cultivars (Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot). The third experiment consisted of an experiment with three canopy management treatments (i) LR (removal of 5 to 6 basal leaves), (ii) ST (thinned to 24 shoots per vine), and (iii) LRST (a combination of LR and ST) and an untreated control (UNT). Berry composition, flavonoid content and profiles, and 3-isobutyl 2-methoxypyrazine were monitored during berry ripening. Although increasing canopy porosity through canopy management practices can be helpful for other purposes, this may not be the case of flavonoid compounds when a certain proportion of kaempferol was achieved. Our results revealed different sensitivities to degradation within the flavonoid groups, flavonols being the only monitored group that was upregulated by solar radiation. Within different canopy management practices, the main effects were due to the ST. Under environmental conditions given in this trial, ST and LRST hastened fruit maturity; however, a clear improvement of the flavonoid compounds (i.e., greater anthocyanin) was not observed at harvest. Methoxypyrazine berry content decreased with canopy management practices studied. Although some berry traits were improved (i.e. 2.5° Brix increase in berry total soluble solids) due to canopy management practices (ST), this resulted in a four-fold increase in labor operations cost, two-fold decrease in yield with a 10-fold increase in anthocyanin production cost per hectare that should be assessed together.

ABSTRACT Both ‘0900 Ziraat’ and ‘Regina’ grafted on ‘Krymsk 5’, or ‘Piku 1’ rootstocks were trained to either Upright Fruiting Offshoots (UFO), Super Slender Axe (SSA) or Kym Green Bush (KGB) training systems. Vegetative growth of the tree, determined by measuring trunk cross-sectional area (TCSA), canopy volume and leaf area, differed significantly, depending on the cultivar x rootstock x training system combination. In general, ‘Krymsk 5’ rootstock resulted in trees with significantly thicker trunks (TCSA: 37.75 cm2) and increased leaf area (up to 86.97 cm2). Fruit weight and fruit quality parameters including Hunter a*, firmness, TSS and acidity were variable between rootstocks and training systems and often not significantly different between treatments. In some years however, significant differences were highly dependent on the training system and rootstock interactions. Higher concentrations of bioactive phytochemical concentrations for total monomeric anthocyanin and antioxidant concentrations were mostly associated with the UFO training system in conjunction with the ‘Krymsk 5’ rootstock suggesting that these are linked to increased tree vigour and increased leaf surface area.

Recently, the crop forcing technique (summer pruning that “forces” the vine to start a new cycle) has proven to be effective in delaying the harvest date and increasing must acidity, but also reducing the yield. However, recent information on deficit irrigation strategies combined with the crop forcing technique reveals that the crop forcing technique reduces irrigation water use efficiency. Two experiments were conducted. Experiment 1 was a 4-year trial to test the effect of the forcing pruning date on the phenology, yield, yield components and water requirements when post-veraison water stress is applied. In this experiment, the treatments were unforced vines (UF-RDI) and forced vines with a forcing pruning date about 70 (F1-RDI) and 100 (F2-RDI) days after budburst. The harvest date was delayed 34 (F1) and 66 (F2) days increasing the must acidity and malic acid concentration in the forced treatments. However, both forced treatments had a reduced yield (36% in F1 and 49% in F2) and irrigation water use efficiency (12% in F1 and 65% in F2). Experiment 2 was a 2-year trial in which irrigation was suppressed before the forcing pruning in F1 (F1-Pre) and F2 (F2-Pre) and after veraison. The yield, yield components, must quality and irrigation were compared to forced vines with irrigation suppression only after veraison (F1-RDI and F2-RDI). For the entire experiment, both treatments in which irrigation was suppressed before the forcing pruning reduced the amount of irrigation supplied (10% in F1-Pre and 30% in F2-Pre) with no negative effects on the yield, yield components or must quality when compared to F-RDI treatments.

Yield components and fruit composition of 'MidSouth', an interspecific hybrid bunch grape (Vitis spp.) with relatively low total soluble solids and high titratable acidity, was evaluated in south Mississippi to determine if treatments consisting of early pruning, early pruning with pre-bloom leaf removal, normal pruning with post-fruit set leaf removal, or normal pruning in one study, or post-fruit set leaf removal, post-fruit set shoot thinning, or neither leaf removal nor shoot thinning in a second study could improve these qualities. Early pruning with leaf removal reduced berries per cluster, cluster weights, yields, and Ravaz index. Early pruning treatments had inconsistent results from year to year, and normal pruning treatments were not often significantly different. Shoot thinned vines had lower yields and Ravaz index and higher total soluble solids. Second study leaf removal vines had lower juice pH in 2020 and lower yield per vine in 2021. These findings show that 'MidSouth' can be altered by these practices, but they did not appear to sufficiently alter 'MidSouth' quality. Thus, early pruning with or without leaf removal, normal pruning with leaf removal, and shoot thinning are not recommended for 'MidSouth' in south Mississippi, and normal pruning without these practices should be continued. Effective canopy management in fruit crops is imperative for development of an ideal plant framework which facilitates uniform distribution of incident light, air circulation, thus to improve microclimate. This sustains photosynthesis and reduces spread of pest-diseases, addresses competition among fruits to achieve high productivity. This study aims to assess the impact of canopy management through strategic pruning on growth, physiological and biochemical changes, flowering, fruiting and incidence of sunburn and diseases in dragon fruit. The results indicated improvement in chlorophyll content and NDVI in pruned canopy. Pruning not only increased production of new sprouts but also fruitful cladodes compare to un-pruned plants. Canopy treatments significantly reduced sunburn by 67.68 % and 69.05 % in 2022 and 2023, whereas disease incidence was minimized by 43.23 and 81.51 %, respectively over control. Compared to first year, lightly and moderately pruned plants shown yield increment of 11 to 48 % during second year reaching at non-significant level to yield in control, where yield increment was just 2.8 %. Cladode numbers were positively correlated with sunburn, diseases, fruit yield and negatively correlated with sprouting and fruitful cladodes. Pruning is a common practice in citrus for various reasons. These include controlling and shaping the canopy; improving phytosanitary health, productivity, and fruit quality; and facilitating operations such as harvesting and phytosanitary treatments. Because pruning is an expensive operation, its need is sometimes questioned. However, it has been proven to be particularly important in Mediterranean citriculture, which is oriented towards producing fruits for a high-quality demanding fresh market. Herein, we summarize and explain the pruning techniques used in Mediterranean citriculture and refer to the main purposes of each pruning type, considering citrus morphology and physiology.

Lodging risk in spring wheat has grown with the introduction of high-yielding cultivars that require high nitrogen (N) inputs to optimize grain yield and protein content. Canopy management (CM) strategies have been used to reduce lodging risk. However, the short growing season and unpredictable moisture supply may limit the use of these strategies in the Canadian Prairies. The objective of this study was to quantify the ability of agronomic practices to modify the early season crop canopy, and hence lodging risk, and to determine how these practices influence N use and final grain N yield. Split-plot field trials were established at four site-years (SYs) in Manitoba to evaluate CM strategies including three plant densities, a split N fertilizer application, and the application of chlormequat chloride (CCC) on canopy size (dry matter (DM) and height at anthesis), N uptake and remobilization, lodging and stalk strength, grain yield, protein, and grain N yield on the cultivar AAC Brandon. Precipitation was low during this study (64%–78% of long-term average (LTA)), resulting in modest yields and low lodging pressure. However, low plant density (PD), split N, and CCC applications all showed potential to reduce lodging risk without reducing grain yield or protein concentration. Split N and plant growth regulator (PGR) applications increased final grain N yield by 11.2% and 2.4%, respectively. Therefore, CM practices have potential in the Canadian Prairies to reduce lodging risk without compromising grain N, but results should be validated in higher precipitation environments and across additional cultivars and growing regions of western Canada. Les risques de verse chez le blé de printemps se sont accrus avec l'introduction de cultivars à haut rendement dont on optimise le rendement et la teneur en protéines par un apport important d'engrais azoté (N). Pour atténuer ce risque, les producteurs recourent à la gestion du feuillage. Cependant, la brièveté de la période végétative et une teneur en eau imprévisible dans le sol pourraient restreindre le recours à une telle stratégie dans les Prairies canadiennes. Comme il n'a guère plu pendant l'étude (64 à 78 % de la moyenne à long terme), le rendement était modeste et la pression engendrée par la verse, relativement faible. In the context of climate change, where high temperatures are frequent in the first phases of ripening, protecting grapevine bunches from solar radiation is essential for preserving berry composition and wine colour. The effects of bunch-zone late defoliations (DEFs) and “semi-ballerina” shoot positioning (SB) on vine physiology and grape and wine quality of organic cv. Sangiovese wines during storage were assessed in two contrasting seasons (2013 and 2014). The treatments altered neither vine physiology (leaf photosynthetic activity and stomatal conductance, stem water potential) nor vine phenology, yield, budburst and fruitfulness. Defoliations imposed at post-veraison (DEF I) and pre-harvest (DEF II), but not shoot positioning imposed at post-veraison, enhanced the concentration of berry skin flavonols at harvest, compared to an untreated control. Late defoliations and SB did not change berry weight, anthocyanins, soluble solids, pH or titratable acidity at harvest. The severity of Botrytis bunch rot was assessed in both seasons. In 2013, it was negligible regardless of the treatment. In 2014 (characterised by higher rainfall and lower average temperatures than in 2013), late defoliations (DEF I and DEF II), especially DEF I, and SB to a minor extent, limited the severity of Botrytis bunch rot. The oenological benefits of late defoliations and shoot positioning were observed during wine storage. These canopy management practices positively influenced wine components (polymeric pigments; namely short polymeric pigments) that might have a marked effect on the final colour intensity, without altering the basic chemical characteristics of the wine. When choosing the timing for carrying out defoliation in order to improve grape quality and bunch rot containment, the meteorological conditions should be properly considered. Our results may contribute to providing further recommendations for canopy management for grape growers who produce organic Sangiovese wines that undergo aging.

Shoot topping and other summer grapevine management practices are considered crucial for producing high-quality wine. However, in recent years, climate change is increasing the need to reassess these strategies, as excessive radiation and high temperatures can negatively impact canopy functionality and berry quality. Indeed, it has been hypothesized that limiting summer vegetative pruning may protect the bunch, via shading, and the leaf by maintaining a more favorable environment for leaf functionality (e.g., lower VPD, reduced high light stress) owing to a denser canopy. In this work, a series of canopy manipulation treatments (shoot topping vs. long-shoot bundling; secondary shoot trimming vs. untrimmed) were tested in a replicated factorial block design over two seasons in field-grown grapevine plants (cv. Cabernet Franc grafted in SO4). Overall, treatments in which secondary shoot removal and/or shoot topping were not applied produced a higher canopy area, increased pruning wood and leaf layers, and had a higher Fv/Fm on warm days when compared to pruned canopies. These were associated with a year-dependent modulation of quality parameters of the must in which long-shoot bundling treatment, overall, produced the highest polyphenol and anthocyanin contents and must acidity. Our data provide evidence of a potential usefulness of preserving dense canopies under high temperature – high irradiance conditions with desirable effects on leaf photosynthesis and must quality when long-shoot bundling was applied. Nitrogen (N) application on winter oilseed rape (Brassica napus L.; WOSR) in the mild Atlantic climate of Ireland is based on a soil N Index system, which does not take into account any variations in crop N demand prior to the main spring dressing of N fertilizer. This study tests whether UK- canopy management (CM) principles for oilseed rape N fertilization are applicable for oilseed rape grown in Ireland. The tested principles included (i) final N uptake of unfertilized crops will be equivalent to the soil mineral N (SMN) and N in the crop measured at the end of winter, i.e., soil N uptake efficiency (SNUpE) = 1; and (ii) the (apparent) N fertilizer N uptake efficiency, (FNUpE) is 0.6 (60%). Three years of field trials were carried out from 2017/18 to 2019/20 on different sites based on a split-plot design. Three sowing dates (SD): mid-August (SD1), End-August (SD2) and mid-September (SD3) were set as main plots and five N application strategies namely, CM standard, CM higher yield, CM low N rate, Fix225 and zero-N were set at subplot level. Results from unfertilized plots demonstrated that the ratio of final crop N uptake at harvest to the combined post-winter SMN + crop N was 1.13 and 1.14 on the two early sowing dates but 1.68 for the latest sowing. Additionally, SMN was not systematically impacted by SD, except in site-year-2. Instead, crop N content in spring had the biggest influence when calculating soil N supply for the season. More mineralization occurred through the growing season resulting in SNUpE of above 100% on all SDs. This additional available N (AAN) was quantified as 11 kgN·ha−1 on average for SD1 and SD2 and 38.6 kgN·ha−1 for SD3. FNUpE values were calculated closest to the economical optimum N rate (Nopt) and were 0.534, 0.574 and 0.486, respectively for SD1, SD2 and SD3. The Nopts at each SD were 157 kgN·ha−1 (SD1), 148 kgN·ha−1 (SD2) and 175 kgN·ha−1 (SD3) and the respective yields at each Nopt were 4.93 t ha−1, 4.90 t·ha−1 and 4.34 t·ha−1. This study shows the UK–CM principles were applicable in the mild Irish climate; however, values of SNUpE and FNUpE differ from one site-year-SD to another. Mid-August to early September sowing dates produced higher post-winter crop N content due to SMN uptake, and this results in a lower Nopt than the later SD. Sowing later led to a higher Nopt due to a combination of lower post-winter N uptake and lower FNUpE, although the effect of these factors was partially offset by a greater AAN. Measurements of SNS post-winter, an estimate of N mineralization during the growing season, together with a consideration of the sowing date helped determine the scope for reduction in fertilizer while achieving high yield and high FNUpE. To manage excessive vine vigor, Vitis vinifera L. ‘Cabernet franc’ grapevines were subjected to shoot wrap, shoot tuck, and hedge (control) techniques at one of two growth stages (shoot tips at 30 cm or at 90 cm above the top catch wire) in the Finger Lakes region of New York from 2016 to 2019. Shoot tuck and shoot wrap both reduced fruit zone lateral counts, with reductions up to 33% and 56% compared with the control, respectively. Shoot wrap reduced fruit zone lateral lengths by up to 50% and cluster compactness by up to 2.4 fewer berries per centimeter rachis. Although shoot wrap improved spray penetration to the clusters by up to 28% in one year of the study, enhanced point quadrat analysis indicated that occlusion layer number was not affected by the treatments. Shoot tip management treatments did not affect yield or fruit composition consistently. Phenological timing of shoot tip management had little impact on vine growth. Although the impacts of these modified shoot tip management practices on lateral emergence and cluster morphology were generally positive, the required hand labor to apply the treatments on a large scale may discourage the use of these management practices.

Pruning is one of the most expensive tasks in citrus production, and its mechanization could increase the productivity and competitiveness of citrus farms. The effect of mechanical pruning on yield depends on the variety, crop condition, and location; among other factors. The 'Clemenules' mandarin variety is one of the most important ones; therefore, the aim of this work was to study the effects of twelve pruning strategies on 'Clemenules' yield over four years, and to conduct an economic analysis. These strategies included fully manual pruning, annual alternation of mechanical/manual pruning, mechanical pruning with manual follow-up, and fully mechanical pruning with different types of cuttings. The results showed that pruning strategies affected the yield and fruit size in some years of the study but not when the four years overall are considered. Strategies that annually alternated mechanical pruning with manual pruning had higher yields than the fully mechanical approaches, and similar yields to the manual and control (no pruning) strategies. Furthermore, although the mechanical pruning costs per hectare were as minimum two times less than those with manual pruning, higher net value was achieved with the manual pruning approach followed by alternate annual mechanical/manual pruning. In conclusion, after four years of study, the pruning strategy with the best global results for 'Clemenules' mandarin was that which involved annually alternating mechanical (topping and one-sided hedging) and manual pruning. Being a tree crop of commercial importance, the productive performance of cashew is greatly influenced by how best its canopy is architectured for harnessing maximum benefits in terms of yield. The initial training is crucial for the development of photosynthetically efficient canopy in cashew as in other perennial fruit trees. Pruning of dead wood and crisscross branches can alone increase the yield by 30-40 per cent. The dwarf rootstocks also play a role in manipulating the canopy in cashew, wherein, canopy containment and yield were influenced by such rootstocks. By resorting to soil application of growth retardants like paclobutrazol, cashew canopy could be successfully contained to suit high density planting system. The studies on planting geometry has indicated the advantage of high density planting in enhancing profitability of cashew orchards in the initial years of plantation. The advantages of rejuvenation as well as top working techniques are also discussed in this aper.

. Kinnow mandarin (Citrus reticulata Blanco) is a highly valued fruit crop with ever increasing demand in national and international markets. Farmers eagerly put their efforts to produce quality fruit even compromising food safety, which is a preliminary concern of every consumer due to increased awareness of the adverse impact of pesticide abuses in conventional farming system. Use of environment friendly non-hazardous biological agents is increasing particularly for perishable horticultural crops. The project was designed to evaluate ecofriendly approaches to improve plant vigor and fruit quality of Kinnow mandarin replacing unsafe synthetic pesticides. During first two years of trial (2014 and 2015) improved pruning practices (traditional, 10% and 20%) and biopesticides (neem oil and lemongrass oil each at 1.5%) were evaluated separately while in third year (2016) integrated treatment applications were designed to investigate cumulative effect of pruning and biopesticides on fruit quality in comparison with control and sole application of Bifenthrin at 2 ml/L. Cosmetic, physical and biochemical attributes were studied in fully ripened fruits. Initial experiments witnessed significant reduction in fruit blemishes with 20% pruning and 1.5% neem oil treatment with improved physical quality, while cumulative application resulted in prominent statistically significant improvement. Making raisins (dried grapes) is a laborious process and grape growers around the world are increasingly interested in adopting mechanized methods, especially dry-on-vine (DOV). The DOV method entails severing canes bearing mature fruit, causing them to DOV, after which they may be harvested by machine. The overhead arbor is an important DOV raisin trellis system, but basic agronomic performance of raisin varieties on that system are scant. Therefore, a three-year experiment was conducted to compare the performance of several raisin grape varieties (Vitis vinifera L.), on an overhead arbor trellis, for production of DOV raisins. Grapevine variety, ‘DOVine’, ‘Fiesta’, ‘Selma Pete’, or ‘Thompson Seedless’, was the main-plot factor, and number of canes, six or eight, was the sub-plot. ‘Fiesta’ produced the highest yields, averaging about 12.24 Mg/ha raisins. However, ‘Fiesta’ generally had the lowest soluble solids and among the lowest raisin grades. The later ripening of ‘Fiesta’ fruit delayed harvest pruning to initiate fruit drying compared to the other varieties. Therefore, its raisins did not dry sufficiently to meet industry standards. ‘Selma Pete’, ‘DOVine’, and ‘Thompson Seedless’ had similar yields, generally about 20% less than ‘Fiesta’, but ‘Selma Pete’ produced fruit that were the largest in size, with the highest soluble solids, and that produced raisins of the highest grades, compared to the other varieties. Vines pruned to eight canes produced higher yields without sacrificing raisin quality. In conclusion, ‘Fiesta’ was notable for its high productivity, and ‘Selma Pete’ for its earliness and high quality, and both varieties had sufficient capacity to carry eight 15-node canes. Bunch rot is a fungal disease and causes significant yield loses to grapes yield every year. Fruit Zone Leaf Removal (FZLR) is a canopy management technique that provides a cost-effective and high-quality grape yield. In order to boost grape quality and minimize disease incidence in the King's Ruby variety, FZLR was used for two seasons in a row. Total leaf removal was used before bloom, during full bloom, and four weeks after bloom, and was compared to an untreated control (non-defoliated). In all leaf removal treatments, titratable acidity and bunch rot incidence decreased significantly, while total soluble solids, total phenolic content, total sugars, and reducing sugars increased significantly when compared to regulation. In comparison to the other treatments, the growth of lateral shoots was significantly higher in the control. At bloom and four weeks after bloom, FZLR increased the fruit's quality attributes. The proper penetration of light and air in the plants, as a result of leaf removal, decreases the occurrence and severity of bunch rot to less than 5%. This method is extremely useful for maintaining grape quality and quantity without the use of chemicals to combat disease. As a result, this strategy is both environmentally and health-friendly. To manage excessive vine vigor, Vitis vinifera L. ‘Cabernet franc’ grapevines were subjected to shoot wrap, shoot tuck, and hedge (control) techniques at one of two growth stages (shoot tips at 30 cm or at 90 cm above the top catch wire) in the Finger Lakes region of New York from 2016 to 2019. Shoot tuck and shoot wrap both reduced fruit zone lateral counts, with reductions up to 33% and 56% compared with the control, respectively. Shoot wrap reduced fruit zone lateral lengths by up to 50% and cluster compactness by up to 2.4 fewer berries per centimeter rachis. Although shoot wrap improved spray penetration to the clusters by up to 28% in one year of the study, enhanced point quadrat analysis indicated that occlusion layer number was not affected by the treatments. Shoot tip management treatments did not affect yield or fruit composition consistently. Phenological timing of shoot tip management had little impact on vine growth. Although the impacts of these modified shoot tip management practices on lateral emergence and cluster morphology were generally positive, the required hand labor to apply the treatments on a large scale may discourage the use of these management practices. When amphibians thermoregulate, they face a fundamental trade-off between the ability to maintain activity and an increased rate of dehydration at higher temperatures. Canopy coverage affects both the thermal and hydric conditions of the environment and can therefore influence amphibian thermoregulation. Frogs require proper conditions to thermoregulate to successfully grow, survive, and reproduce. But while we know how canopy and environmental variables typically affect operative temperature, less is known about effects on amphibian water loss rates. In this study, we measure the effect of canopy coverage on the conditions available for thermoregulation at a breeding pond of the California red-legged frog, Rana draytonii. We use agar frog models to estimate the thermal and hydric capacities frogs would experience in locations with different canopy coverage and microhabitats. At each site, we deployed models under four microhabitat treatments: wet/sun, wet/shade, dry/sun, and dry/shade. We modeled how environmental variables affected operative temperature and evaporative water loss from agar frogs. We found positive effects of air temperature, the sun treatment, and reduced canopy cover on operative temperature, and negative direct or indirect effects of these variables on evaporative water loss, consistent with the hypothesized trade-off between thermoregulatory behavior to increase temperature and the increased desiccation risk due to higher water loss. Additionally, our results indicate that the availability of wet microhabitats can allow frogs to reduce water loss, potentially mitigating the risk of desiccation when thermoregulating to achieve higher operative temperatures. Shoot topping and other summer grapevine management practices are considered crucial for producing high-quality wine. However, in recent years, climate change is increasing the need to reassess these strategies, as excessive radiation and high temperatures can negatively impact canopy functionality and berry quality. Indeed, it has been hypothesized that limiting summer vegetative pruning may protect the bunch, via shading, and the leaf by maintaining a more favorable environment for leaf functionality (e.g., lower VPD, reduced high light stress) owing to a denser canopy. In this work, a series of canopy manipulation treatments (shoot topping vs. long-shoot bundling; secondary shoot trimming vs. untrimmed) were tested in a replicated factorial block design over two seasons in field-grown grapevine plants (cv. Cabernet Franc grafted in SO4). Overall, treatments in which secondary shoot removal and/or shoot topping were not applied produced a higher canopy area, increased pruning wood and leaf layers, and had a higher Fv/Fm on warm days when compared to pruned canopies. These were associated with a year-dependent modulation of quality parameters of the must in which long-shoot bundling treatment, overall, produced the highest polyphenol and anthocyanin contents and must acidity. Our data provide evidence of a potential usefulness of preserving dense canopies under high temperature – high irradiance conditions with desirable effects on leaf photosynthesis and must quality when long-shoot bundling was applied.

Nitrogen (N) application on winter oilseed rape (Brassica napus L.; WOSR) in the mild Atlantic climate of Ireland is based on a soil N Index system, which does not take into account any variations in crop N demand prior to the main spring dressing of N fertilizer. This study tests whether UK- canopy management (CM) principles for oilseed rape N fertilization are applicable for oilseed rape grown in Ireland. The tested principles included (i) final N uptake of unfertilized crops will be equivalent to the soil mineral N (SMN) and N in the crop measured at the end of winter, i.e., soil N uptake efficiency (SNUpE) = 1; and (ii) the (apparent) N fertilizer N uptake efficiency, (FNUpE) is 0.6 (60%). Three years of field trials were carried out from 2017/18 to 2019/20 on different sites based on a split-plot design. Three sowing dates (SD): mid-August (SD1), End-August (SD2) and mid-September (SD3) were set as main plots and five N application strategies namely, CM standard, CM higher yield, CM low N rate, Fix225 and zero-N were set at subplot level. Results from unfertilized plots demonstrated that the ratio of final crop N uptake at harvest to the combined post-winter SMN + crop N was 1.13 and 1.14 on the two early sowing dates but 1.68 for the latest sowing. Additionally, SMN was not systematically impacted by SD, except in site-year-2. Instead, crop N content in spring had the biggest influence when calculating soil N supply for the season. More mineralization occurred through the growing season resulting in SNUpE of above 100% on all SDs. This additional available N (AAN) was quantified as 11 kgN·ha−1 on average for SD1 and SD2 and 38.6 kgN·ha−1 for SD3. FNUpE values were calculated closest to the economical optimum N rate (Nopt) and were 0.534, 0.574 and 0.486, respectively for SD1, SD2 and SD3. The Nopts at each SD were 157 kgN·ha−1 (SD1), 148 kgN·ha−1 (SD2) and 175 kgN·ha−1 (SD3) and the respective yields at each Nopt were 4.93 t ha−1, 4.90 t·ha−1 and 4.34 t·ha−1. This study shows the UK–CM principles were applicable in the mild Irish climate; however, values of SNUpE and FNUpE differ from one site-year-SD to another. Mid-August to early September sowing dates produced higher post-winter crop N content due to SMN uptake, and this results in a lower Nopt than the later SD. Sowing later led to a higher Nopt due to a combination of lower post-winter N uptake and lower FNUpE, although the effect of these factors was partially offset by a greater AAN. Measurements of SNS post-winter, an estimate of N mineralization during the growing season, together with a consideration of the sowing date helped determine the scope for reduction in fertilizer while achieving high yield and high FNUpE. Among different N rate strategies, CM standard and CM high yield were closest to the Nopt for having lower N rates at the maximum economical yield point.

BACKGROUND The single high‐wire system is a free canopy trellis system suitable for warm to hot climates. In a global warming scenario, it arouses as a technological solution since it prevents berry overheating and sunburn. Canopy management practices manipulate leaf‐to‐fruit ratios, affecting berry and wine composition. We aimed to evaluate the phenolic and sensory profiles of Malbec wines from single high‐wire trellised vineyards in a hot region in Mendoza (Argentina) and to assess the effect of varying leaf‐to‐fruit ratios on these attributes. We manipulated leaf‐to‐fruit ratios by varying shoot trimming (experiment 1: 0.45 m, 0.80 m, and untrimmed) and winter pruning severity (experiment 2: 16, 24, 32, and >32 countable buds per meter). We characterized wine attributes by a descriptive analysis, color by the CIELAB space, and global phenolics compounds and anthocyanins by high‐performance liquid chromatography with diode array detection. RESULTS: We found that wines where shoots were trimmed to 0.80 m or left untrimmed had similar and greater intensity of color, violet hue, astringency, and alcohol and a richer aroma profile than wines where shoots were trimmed to 0.45 m. Meanwhile, wines from 16 and >32 buds/m treatments (the latter simulating a box pruning) were similar to each other and had higher color intensity, violet hue, acidity, alcohol, and astringency and a more complex aroma profile than the other pruning treatments. CONCLUSIONS: The best quality wines were achieved by leaving 16 or >32 buds/m and by trimming shoots to 0.80 m or leaving them untrimmed.
