This article sketches the linguistic and socio-cultural history of Cappadocia and the Cappadocians from the Hittite Empire in the Late Bronze Age until the population exchange between Greece and Turkey in 1923-1924. It describes the Hellenization of Cappadocia following Alexander's conquest of Asia Minor, including the long period of bilingualism involving the old Cappadocian language (probably Luwian or a related Anatolian language) and Cappadocian Greek. Already in Late Antiquity Cappadocian was considered a “barbarbic” version of Greek, but a much more dramatic transformation took place after the defeat of the Byzantine army by the Seljuk Turks at the battle of Manzikert (1071) and the subsequent conquest of Asia Minor. This resulted again in a long period of bilingualism during which the majority of the Cappadocians would eventually shift to Turkish. A minority of approximately 40% continued to speak Greek alongside Turkish, but the Greek was so heavily Turkicized that Cappadocian was incomprehensible and sounded like Turkish to other Greeks. After the population exchange, the Cappadocians were discriminated, because of their looks but especially because of their language, and as a result became increasingly reluctant to transmit their mother tongue to their children and grandchildren. In the 1980s it was generally believed that Cappadocian had become extinct until Mark Janse and Dimitris Papazachariou discovered that one particular Cappadocian dialect was still spoken to some extent in Greece. The recognition of Cappadocian as a bona fide language by academics turned out to be instrumental in the reversal of the negative language of the Cappadocians towards their own heritage language. The story of Cappadocian is thus another testimony of the social relevance of academic research in the humanities.

Of all the Cappadocian dialects, Ulağaç Cappadocian is considered the most ‘corrupt’ by Dawkins: “Nowhere is the vocabulary so filled with Turkish words or the syntax so Turkish” (1916: 18). Kesisoglou singles out the following as being characteristic: the loss of grammatical gender distinctions and the resulting neuterisation of nouns, including the the generalized use of the neuter article do, pl. da (1951: 4). In the case of transitive clauses this results in potential ambiguity, as nominative and accusative NPs are not distinguished morphologically. Kesisoglou quotes the following example: itó do néka do ándra-t páasen do do xorjó, which could either mean ‘that woman led her husband to the village’ or ‘that woman, her husband led her to the village’ (1951: 49). To disambiguate such cases, the article is often omitted under the second interpretation according to Kesisoglou (ibid.): itó do néka ándra-t páasen do do xorjó. Likewise, itó do peí vavá-t çórsen do ‘that child, its father saw it’ vs. itó do peí do vavá-t çórsen do ‘that child saw its father’ (ibid.). This suggests that the article is omitted in the case of subject NPs, but not in the case of object NPs (Janse 2019: 100). Upon closer scrutiny, however, it turns out that the article can only be omitted if the noun is historically masculine or feminine, but not neuter. In this dissertation I explore Byzantine metre, within the framework of the modern linguistic theory of information structure. I have done this in a corpus of Byzantine book epigrams, in order to come to more generic conclusions about Byzantine poetic texts in general. My focus is mainly on the two typically medieval metres (i.e. the dodecasyllable and the political verse) and their variants. The findings discussed are divided into two main categories: quantitative and qualititative conclusions. The quantitative conclusions are the results of my tagging in my own subdatabase, which is part of the larger Database of Byzantine Book Epigrams. I have tagged several characteristics in my corpus, in order to search for the linguistic properties of a metrical colon (‘What makes a colon tick?’), based on the idea that metrical cola function in a similar way to Information Units. Indeed, the theory of Information Units states that spoken language is never pronounced in long sentences, but rather in short ‘spurts’ or ‘chunks’. These ‘chunks’ (Information Units) have a cognitive basis, since they emanate from a restriction in our short-term memory. On the other hand, we find that medieval metres exhibit a tendency to be divided into prosodic ‘chunks’ as wel: i.e. cola. Indeed, the similarity between the two has been studied several times and implies that metrical cola also have a cognitive aspect to them. Against this background, I have gone searching for different signposts of information structure within the epigrams in my corpus, in order to objectively identify these cola/IUs. The qualitative conclusions are spread over two chapter. In Chapter 6 I have investigated some of the more formulaic epigrams in my corpus from closerby, with the similarity between cola and IUs in mind. Indeed, several book epigrams are somewhere in between oral and written texts in terms of their transmission, and therefore exhibit a host of metrical (and other) mistakes. I have explained the emergence of these mistakes, which are understandable if you keep in mind that metrical cola function as IUs. In Chapter 7, I have studied the vague line between poetry and prose, since many epigrams do not seem to be clearly one or the other. As it turns out, the Byzantines themselves did not have a clear terminology to separate the two themselves, so we might be trying to impose modern labels to medieval texts. All in all, these book epigrams have proven to be a true window into the minds of the scribes that produced them, and have given us some glimpses of what happened there at the moment of verse production.

One can argue that he history of texts is closely linked to the history of technology. From papyrus to computers, the support considered in itself has always been a key element of the conservation, diffusion or criticism of texts. In our days of information technology, philologists must revaluate their disciplin, their methods and their working tools. What are the consequences of this ? The present article only proposes to add one element of reflection to this issue and question the added value of technology in the study of the Genavensis Græcus 44, a manuscript from the Iliad dating back to theend of the 13th century. This manuscript was made famous by Henri II Estienne who had use dit for his edition of the 1566 Poetæ Græci, an edition that was a major reference until the 18th century. Thereafter, the manuscript lost some of its former prestige and was even retitled codex ignotus. Yeti t became popular again after being entirely digitalized and put online on the “ Swiss database and virtual library of manuscripts” (www. ecodices. unifr. ch). Thanks to such easy access and quality reading, philologists can highlight what is at stake in the transmission of knowledge between the copist and his sources, but also between the copist and his readers. The specificity of the Geneva manuscript lies mostly in its previously unpublished interlinear paraphrase. The attentive transcription and reading of Homer’s lines and their corresponding paraphrase evidences an interplay of influences. Thus a new stage was reached in the study of the Geneva manuscript and its paraphrase : the creation of concordances that can be exploited or studied freely, lemmatization or automatic lexical study are so many opportunities to envisage the Geneva manuscript as a whole., Il n’est pas exagéré d’affirmer que l’histoire des textes est intimement liée à celle des technologies : du papyrus à l’ordinateur, le support, considéré per se, a toujours été un enjeu déterminant pour la conservation, la diffusion ou encore la critique textuelle. Aujourd’hui, à l’heure de l’avènement de l’informatique, le philologue doit repenser sa discipline, ses méthodes et ses outils de travail. Quelles en sont les conséquences ? La présente contribution ne fait qu’apporter une pièce à ce dossier et se propose d’interroger l’apport des nouvelles technologies dans l’étude du Genavensis Græcus 44, un manuscrit de l’Iliade datant de la fin du xiiie siècle. Ce manuscrit a été rendu célèbre par Henri II Estienne qui l’avait utilisé pour son édition des Poetæ Græci de 1566, édition qui a fait référence jusqu’au xviiie siècle. Par la suite, le manuscrit a perdu son prestige d’antan, au point d’être rebaptisé codex ignotus. Il a toutefois vécu une véritable renaissance après avoir été entièrement numérisé et mis en ligne sur «la base de données et bibliothèque virtuelle des manuscrits en Suisse » e-codices (www. ecodices. unifr. ch). Bénéficiant d’un accès facile et d’une consultation de grande qualité, le philologue peut mettre en relief les enjeux de la transmission du savoir entre le copiste et sa source mais également entre le copiste et son lecteur. La spécificité du manuscrit de Genève réside surtout dans sa paraphrase interlinéaire encore inédite. La transcription et la lecture attentive des vers homériques et de la paraphrase interlinéaire correspondante démontrent un jeu d’influences réciproques entre les premiers et la seconde. Ainsi une étape a pu être franchie dans l’étude du manuscrit de Genève et de sa paraphrase : la création de concordances, exploitables et interrogeables à souhait, la lemmatisation ou encore l’étude lexicale automatisée sont autant de possibilités qui nous sont offertes pour appréhender, dans sa totalité, le manuscrit de Genève., Jambé Ariane. Linguistic varieties such as female speech, foreigner talk, and colloquial language have not gone unnoticed when it comes to Classical Greek, but little is known about later periods of the Greek language. In this collective volume leading experts in the field outline some of the most important varieties of Post-classical and Byzantine Greek, basing themselves on a broad range of literary and documentary sources, and advancing a number of innovative methodologies. Close attention is paid to the linguistic features that characterize these varieties, with in-depth discussions of lexical, morpho-syntactic, orthographic, and metrical variation, as well as the interrelationship between these different types of variation. The volume thus offers valuable insights into the nature of Post-classical and Byzantine Greek, laying the foundation for future studies of linguistic variation in these later stages of the language, while at the same time providing a point of comparison for Classical Greek scholarship.

À partir de tous les types de textes disponibles, les actes de ce colloque international invitent à s’interroger sur les mots et les discours relatifs à la ville dans les territoires où l’on a parlé grec au cours de l’Antiquité et du Moyen Âge. L’étude du vocabulaire et du langage vise à mieux comprendre le sens des mots eux-mêmes, leur évolution dans le temps, leur variation selon les régions et la diversité de leurs usages dans des écrits de nature différente. Elle a aussi pour but d’expliciter les représentations mentales qui tout à la fois sous‑tendent l’usage de ces mots et en résultent. Comment les mots de la ville se façonnent-ils ? Comment les mots façonnent-ils la ville ? Les articles, consacrés à un terme pris isolément, à une famille lexicale, à un champ sémantique ou à une œuvre concernant des mondes urbains réels ou fictifs, examinent la ville dans son ensemble, ses édifices, les activités conçues comme proprement urbaines, ou les personnes qui y vivent. Ils sont répartis en quatre chapitres intitulés « Des hommes et des villes », « Composantes et composition de l’espace urbain », « Nommer et classer les villes » et « Des villes dans un empire ». Based upon all sorts of available texts, the proceedings of this colloquium are an invitation to question the words and the discourses concerning the city in the territories in which the Greek language was spoken during Antiquity and the Middle Ages. The study of vocabulary and language seeks to better understand the meaning of the words themselves, their evolution over time, and their variations according to region, as well as the diversity of their usage in various types of texts. This study aims at clarifying the mental images both underlying the usage of these words and resulting from it. How are the words of the city formed? How do words shape the city? The articles focus on one term in isolation, on a semantic field, or on a work related to urban worlds, real or fictitious. They treat the city as a whole: its edifices, its activities considered as strictly urban, or its inhabitants. The articles are organized into four categories entitled “People and cities”, “Components and composition of urban spaces”, “Naming and classifying cities”, and “Cities in an empire”.

The corpus of Greek documentary papyri from Egypt consists of various types of documents, such as letters, contracts and accounts, showing different types of linguistic variation. The concept of register is applied here to examine the relationship between the presence of non-standard orthography and the situational context according to the situational variables setting, participants, genre and production circumstances. Quantitative study shows that the participants involved and the genre of the document are predictors for the amount of orthographic variation that is found in a document. Qualitative analysis of the documents in a number of archives reveals that there are also other important factors, such as the choice of scribe, method of production and the stage of composition of the text that is preserved to us, to explain the presence of orthographic variation in the corpus of documentary papyri.

In this chapter, several metrical varieties in a corpus of Byzantine book epigrams are explored. More specifically, we look into a number of varieties in metrical colophons of the type ἡ μὲν χεὶρ ἡ γράψασα‘ the hand that wrote [this]’, which was a very popular colophon throughout the entire Byzantine period. In its canonical form, these epigrams follow a dodecasyllabic metrical pattern, but many scribes freely experimented with the wording and the metrical structure of these colophons, which gives us a unique insight into the mechanics behind the colometrics of these texts and, by expansion, of Byzantine texts in general. The modern cognitive-linguistic theory of Information Units provides a fitting framework to interpret these varieties and to see them in a way that is different from the traditional reading of written texts. Indeed, the specific characteristics of these texts allow us to attribute certain oral characteristics to them, while still maintaining their written status. From this point of view, multiple reoccurring “mistakes” in the metre turnout to be varieties in disguise, originating from a wrongful pairing of correct metrical units (cola).

This chapter draws attention to the importance of studying not only linguistic variation in language, but also the patterned heterogeneity that can be related to it – in other words, linguistic varieties. Whereas the presence of varieties such as foreigner talk, female speech, colloquial language, etc. in the Classical period has received considerable attention, much less work has been done on the Post-classical and Byzantine periods, a situation which this edited volume hopes to remedy. Before outlining the contributions to the volume, we address a couple of central theoretical questions to research on linguistic varieties, such as the relationship between concepts like ‘variant’, ‘variety’ and ‘variation’, the modeling of varieties in terms of a ‘variational space’, the relationship between varieties, and the different methodologies that can be adopted to study linguistic varieties.

Specialists of the history of Ancient Greek scholarship and modern-day sociolinguists alike have made observations regarding the seemingly “distinctive” status of syntax: the former have argued there is no coherent theory of syntax in Ancient grammatical treatises, and the latter that syntactic variation is much less prominent in modern languages than lexical or phonetic/orthographic variation. The aim of this contribution is to confront these two perspectives by studying linguistic variation in three different types of sources: petitions in the Katochoi of the Sarapieion archive (II BCE), Phrynichus’ Ecloga (II CE), and the Life of Euthymius and its later metaphrasis (VI/X CE). It appears that syntactic variation plays a different role in these three types of sources, which I explain by referring to the cognitive status of syntax, which is more schematic and complex than lexis, and therefore less easily focused upon in“observer-centered”sources such as the Ecloga. At thesametime, I suggest that culture-specific explanations should be taken into account, too.

It describes the Hellenization of Cappadocia following Alexander's conquest of Asia Minor, including the long period of bilingualism involving the old Cappadocian language (probably Luwian or a related Anatolian language) and Cappadocian Greek. Already in Late Antiquity Cappadocian was considered a “barbarbic” version of Greek, but a much more dramatic transformation took place after the defeat of the Byzantine army by the Seljuk Turks at the battle of Manzikert (1071) and the subsequent conquest of Asia Minor. This resulted again in a long period of bilingualism during which the majority of the Cappadocians would eventually shift to Turkish. A minority of approximately 40% continued to speak Greek alongside Turkish, but the Greek was so heavily Turkicized that Cappadocian was incomprehensible and sounded like Turkish to other Greeks. After the population exchange, the Cappadocians were discriminated, because of their looks but especially because of their language, and as a result became increasingly reluctant to transmit their mother tongue to their children and grandchildren. In the 1980s it was generally believed that Cappadocian had become extinct until Mark Janse and Dimitris Papazachariou discovered that one particular Cappadocian dialect was still spoken to some extent in Greece. The recognition of Cappadocian as a bona fide language by academics turned out to be instrumental in the reversal of the negative language of the Cappadocians towards their own heritage language. The story of Cappadocian is thus another testimony of the social relevance of academic research in the humanities

This article considers the variation in the meters of the ὥσπερ ξένοι epigrams collected in the Database of Byzantine Book Epigrams (DBBE). In its canonical form, these epigrams follow a dodecasyllabic metrical pattern. The seemingly unmetrical decasyllabic and decatetrasyllabic variants are explained from a cognitive-linguistic perspective as the pairing of different cola – 5+5 and 7+7 instead of the usual 7+5 or 5+7. From this perspective, cola can be equated with the cognitive ‘idea’ or ‘intonation units’ (IUs) used in ordinary speech.

Поэтическая «Хроника» Константина Манассии изобилует сложными эпитетами, построенными по одной модели: в прилагательное 2-го склонения (иногда слитного) объединяются две простые основы, вторая из которых односложная. В «Хронике» встречаются десятки однотипных эпитетов с одинаковыми двумя частями. Однако в действительности впечатление однотипности обманчиво. Среди внешне одинаковых прилагательных есть: 1) слова, заимствованные Манассией из поэтической традиции; 2) неологизмы, созданные им самим по данной модели; 3) слова, происхождение которых трудно интерпретировать однозначно. В статье ставится вопрос о том, чем являлось это безграничное словотворчество в глазах самого Константина Манассии и каков был статус заимствований из редких источников при условии, что поэт был сам способен создать внешне неотличимые от них слова. Constantine Manasses’ versified Chronicle abounds in compound epithets built according to the same model: 2 simple stems from adjectives belonging to the 2nd (often contracted) declension, the 2nd stem is, as a rule, monosyllable. There are tens of epithets sharing common 2nd stem. Yet, the impression of uniformity is misleading. Among seemingly similar adjectives can be distinguished: 1. words borrowed by Manasses from the poetic tradition, 2. neologisms coined by the poet according to the existing model, and 3. words of ambiguous provenance. The article deals with the question of how Manasses himself viewed this limitless creation of new lexemes and speculates on the status of borrowings from rare sources against the backdrop of Manasses’ ability to produce on his own virtually indistinguishable epithets.
