Dans la République de l’Altaï (Sibérie du Sud, Fédération de Russie), de nombreux autochtones sont adeptes d’Ak Jaŋ (la « Voie blanche »), un mouvement religieux local revitalisant les pratiques et les représentations du bourkhanisme, un millénarisme messianique présoviétique. Durant leurs rituels saisonniers, les adeptes emploient des tapis de feutre dont l’analyse des figurations qui y sont brodées constitue le sujet de cet article. L’idée avancée est que ces broderies, confectionnées par les adeptes féminines du mouvement selon des directives transmises par l’entité suprême Altaj Kudaj (le « Dieu Altaï »), agissent comme des talismans protecteurs du territoire face aux enjeux socioéconomiques et écologiques dont l’Altaï contemporain fait l’objet. Pour appuyer cette hypothèse, l’étude met en rapport les figurations brodées avec les « informations » que certaines femmes « médiums » au sein d’Ak Jaŋ reçoivent de la part des esprits, qu’elles diffusent ensuite dans et par-delà le mouvement religieux. L’article explore également comment ces médiums, via leurs expériences visionnaires, voient leur rôle religieux prendre une dimension sociale et politique inédite. In the Altai Republic (Southern Siberia, Russian Federation), many indigenous people are followers of Ak Jaŋ (the “White Way”), a local religious movement revitalising the practices and representations of Burkhanism, a pre-Soviet messianic millenarianism. During their seasonal rituals, the followers use embroidered felt carpets. The analysis of these artefacts is the subject of this article. The idea put forwards is that the embroideries, made by the female followers of the movement according to directives transmitted by the supreme entity Altai Kudai (the “Altai God”), act as protective talismans of the territory towards the socio-economic and economical challenges facing the contemporary Altai. To support this hypothesis, the study relates the embroidered figurations to the “information” that some women “mediums” within Ak Jaŋ receive from the spirits, which they then disseminate within and beyond the religious movement. The article also explores the way these mediums, via their visionary experiences, see their religious role take on a new social and political dimension.

В статье рассматриваются проблемы распространения христианского вероучения в контексте особенностей включения в состав России и культурного освоения территории Сибири. Объектом исследования выступает православное миссионерство, предметом является специфика миссионерской деятельности православных адептов в условиях межконфессиональных связей и противоречий. Автор ставит цель определить роль православного миссионерства в межконфессиональном взаимодействии на юге Западной Сибири во второй трети XIX – начале XX в. В статье акцентируется внимание на традиционных и новационных тактических приемах совершенствования проповеднической деятельности, которые трансформировались под влиянием изменений в государственном курсе в отношении национальных окраин, активизации конфессиональных конкурентов. В статье на примере изменений в религиозной ситуации начала XX в. характеризуется реакция служителей Алтайской духовной миссии на публичное проявление бурханистского движения, являвшегося региональной синкретической вариацией северного буддизма. Автор приходит к выводу, что православное миссионерство в результате свой целенаправленной деятельности актуализировало идеи монотеизма и мессианизма в традиционном религиозном сознании коренного населения, но они были более успешно интерпретированы буддийскими адептами в вероучении бурханизма. Это обстоятельство способствовало переходу миссионерской работы от преимущественно гибких приемов христианизации и к более жестким и интенсивным способам распространения вероучения., The paper considers the problems of the Christian doctrine spread in the context of incorporation into Russia and the cultural development of the Siberian territory. The object of the research is the Orthodox missionary; the subject is the specifics of the missionary activity of Orthodox adepts in interfaith relations and contradictions. The author sets a goal to determine the role of Orthodox missionary in interfaith interaction in the south of Western Siberia in the second third of XIX – beginning of XX century. The paper focuses on the traditional and innovative tactical methods of improving preaching, which was transformed under the influence of changes in the state course with regard to national outskirts, and the intensification of confessional rivals. In the paper on the example of changes in the religious situation at the beginning of the XX century the author characterizes reaction of the Altai spiritual missioners to the public manifestation of the Burkhanist movement, which was a regional syncretic variation of Northern Buddhism. The author concludes that as a result of its purposeful activity, Orthodox missionary actualized the ideas of monotheism and messianism in the traditional religious consciousness of the indigenous people, but they were more successfully interpreted by Buddhist adepts in the dogma of Burkhanism. This fact contributed to the transition of missionary work from predominantly flexible methods of Christianization and to more hard and intensive methods of dogma spreading.

This work focuses on the contemporary religious revival among the indigenous people of the Altay Republic (Russian Federation). The Altaians reconnect with practices considered as traditional (Shamanism, Burkhanism), while exploring a more or less exogenous religious plurality (Buddhism, different branches of Orthodox and Evangelical Christianity, New Age movements). The choice of a national religion that could serve as a basis for the construction of a distinctive Altaian identity is a fundamental concern for the local intelligentsia. Political dimensions indeed do intersect with these different rearticulations of belief, and the competitive relationship between these movements especially takes shape in each particular understanding of the territory that each of them conveys. It is especially obvious within the seasonal rituals organized by the followers of neo-Shamanism and neo-Burkhanism. Additionally, the analysis of the festival of the Altaian cultures points out how the Administration tries to unite all the indigenous peoples under the banner of a “national spirit”. This attempt nevertheless makes the event a typical legacy of the soviet celebrations of unity. A new way of using epic poetry emerges in this identity construction process. The Altaian epic is indeed part of ritual practices in many religious trends. Its revitalization, followed by a deep reshaping, can be instrumental in turning it into a “revealing” of Altaian identity that overcomes religious divisions and transcends aspirations of unity that emanates from the central government. It can also be perceived as a catalyst in distinguishing the Altay within the Siberian post-soviet space., Ce travail porte sur le renouveau religieux actuel des autochtones de la République de l’Altaï (Fédération de Russie). Les Altaïens renouent avec les pratiques considérées comme traditionnelles (chamanisme, bourkhanisme), mais se tournent également vers quantité de courants religieux plus ou moins exogènes (bouddhisme, christianismes orthodoxe et évangélique, mouvements New Age). Le choix d’une religion nationale qui servirait de point d’appui à la construction d’une identité altaïenne est un enjeu fondamental pour l’intelligentsia locale. Le politique imprègne en effet ces réarticulations du croire, et la concurrence entre les différents mouvements prend notamment corps dans l’appréhension singulière du territoire que chacun véhicule. Celle-ci est particulièrement visible dans les rituels saisonniers organisés par les adeptes du néo-chamanisme et du néo-bourkhanisme. De plus, l’analyse du festival des cultures altaïennes révèle comment l’Administration tente d’unir les autochtones sous la bannière d’un « esprit national », plaçant de ce fait l’événement dans la droite ligne des célébrations soviétiques de l’unité. Une nouvelle modalité d’utilisation de la poésie épique intervient dans ce processus de construction identitaire. En effet, l’épopée altaïenne s’inscrit dans les pratiques rituelles de nombreux courants religieux. Sa revitalisation, qui s’accompagne d’un remodelage profond, contribue à en faire le révélateur d’une identité altaïenne surpassant les divisions religieuses et transcendant les aspirations d’unité émanant du pouvoir central. Elle peut aussi être perçue comme un catalyseur qui singularise l’Altaï au sein de l’espace sibérien postsoviétique.

Cet article discute et compare deux mouvements millénaristes qui se sont étendus en Altaï (le bourkhanisme ou « Foi blanche », 1904) et en Mongolie occidentale (fief de Ja-Lama, 1911) en réponse aux pénétrations économiques et culturelles des Russes (Altaï) et des Chinois (Mongolie) dans ces sociétés nomades. Les études précédentes ont mis l’accent sur la « Foi blanche » altaïenne, insistant sur son caractère exceptionnel et minimisant ses rapports avec le mouvement de Ja-Lama et avec le monde Mongol et bouddhiste en général. Par contraste, cet article soutient que les prêcheurs de la Foi blanche qui ont annoncé la venue du sauveur légendaire Ojrot et le chef de guerre Ja-Lama qui se déclara lui-même réincarnation du prince Oïrat Amursana capitalisent sur la prophétie d’Oïrot/Amyrsana qui circulait parmi les populations des deux régions. L’article montre également qu’au début du xxe siècle, la Foi blanche se transforma graduellement en ce qui aurait pu devenir une version altaïenne du bouddhisme tibétain, avant que l’avancée de la puissante prophétie communiste ne vienne détourner et séculariser les légendes d’Ojrot et d’Amursana. The paper discusses and compares two millenarian movements that sprang up in Altai (Burkhanism or the Ak-Jang [the White/Pure Faith], 1904) and in Western Mongolia (Ja-Lama fiefdom, 1911) in response to Russian (Altai) and Chinese (Mongolia) economic/cultural advances on nomadic societies. Earlier scholarship has been focused on the Altaian White Faith, stressing its unique nature and downplaying its links with the Ja-Lama movement and with Mongol/Buddhist tradition in general. In contrast, this paper suggests that preachers of the White Faith, who propagated the coming of the legendary redeemer named Oirot, and warlord Ja-Lama, who declared himself the reincarnation of Oirot prince Amursana, capitalized on the same Oirot/Amursana prophecy shared by the populations in both areas. It is also argued that in the early 20th century the White Faith was gradually transforming into what could have become an Altaian version of Tibetan Buddhism – a process that was terminated by the advance of the powerful Communist prophecy that hijacked and then secularized the Oirot and Amursana legends.

L’analyse, basée sur huit versions de l’épopée altaïenne d’Altaj-Buučaj, montre que ce texte intègre tout en les transformant des éléments venant des différents systèmes religieux (chamanisme, bourkhanisme, bouddhisme, orthodoxie) alors en concurrence dans cette région. Si Altaj-Buučaj au début de ses aventures peut être pensé comme un chef local, assisté par son auxiliaire, ses traits laissent peu à peu apparaître en filigrane l’image d’un messie ; le texte se comprend alors sur fond de millénarisme et la mission d’Altaj-Buučaj renvoie à celle de l’envoyé de Burhan, qui, selon la prophétie bourkhaniste, viendra délivrer les Altaïens de l’avancée coloniale russe. This analysis is based on eight versions of the Altaian heroic epic of Altai-Buuchai. It shows that the text integrates some elements rooted in different religious systems (shamanism, burkhanism, Buddhism, orthodoxy), competing between each other at this time in the region. Even though it is conceivable at first to comprehend Altai-Buuchai as a local chief supported by his assistant, one can observe that the figure of a messiah progressively emerges: it is then possible to understand the text from a Millenarian point of view. Altai-Buuchai’s mission echoes those of Burhan’s messenger who, from the burkhanist prophecy, will deliver the Altaians from Russian colonization.

Les pratiques communicationnelles sont un aspect important des Nouveaux mouvements religieux. Cet article porte sur des « épîtres », des textes « envoyés d’en haut », et leur circulation dans le mouvement religieux moderne Ak-jaŋ dans la république d’Altaï, ainsi que leur interprétation anthropologique. Les épîtres sont une source pour comprendre la « philosophie » indigène qui est considérée par les participants au mouvement comme un savoir alternatif avec un double arrière-plan, altaïen et russe. L’article décrit la vie sociale des textes, au niveau local et au niveau régional en dialogue avec le pouvoir. The communication practices are important part of many New Religious Movements. This article is about such narratives (“epistles” as texts “sent from Above”), their circulation into modern religious movement Ak-Jaŋ in the Altai Republic and their anthropological interpretation. These epistles are the source of understanding indigenous “philosophy” which is considered by movement’s participants as alternative knowledge having a bilingual background (Altai and Russian). First of all I write about local level of this life. At the same time I show the way of the texts from local to regional level as a dialog between local community and regional power.
